over the Texas Longhorns as they knocked off the UTEP
Miners twenty seven to ten.

Speaker 2 (02:44):
Texas now two and one and one more non conference game.

Speaker 1 (02:48):
And I might add for the foreseeable future, the last
of four non conference games for the University of Texas
has or the FC FCC.

Speaker 2 (03:01):
The SEC.

Speaker 1 (03:04):
Steak about the FCC because the producer Jay Carman had
to edit out some choice words there in some postgame
news conferences not Texas teams like the Dallas Cowboys and
you know some other ones as well. But anyway, you know,
in the future of the Long Worns will be playing
just three non conference games since the SEC is going
to the nine game conference schedule. Good afternoon, everybody, Welcome

(03:27):
to the program here on Sports Radio AM thirteen under
the Town. My name is Craig Way, Thanks so much
for joining us. US would include the producer Jay Carman,
How you doing today?

Speaker 3 (03:38):
Oh, I'm feeling all right.

Speaker 4 (03:39):
It's and I did my best Craig Way impression this
weekend running around calling some play by play on the side.
It's it's been a lot of fun, crazy few days.
And got to give the old bleep button to work
out this afternoon. And you'll hear some of that coming up.

Speaker 1 (03:54):
Did your best Craig Way person I've ever running around
doing some sey by play? Well, you're anyway, story of
my life. You know, you are everywhere running around and
doing some play by play. Yeah, I had a game
Friday night up in Dallas, and then obviously the Texas
game on Saturday.

Speaker 2 (04:10):
So yeah, you know, it's what I've been.

Speaker 1 (04:13):
Doing for the better part of well, in terms of
doing Texas games and being on the broadcast, probably the
better part of thirty five years, but certainly yeah, with
the high school stuff, it goes back even farther. But busy, fun,
active weekend for sure. We'd like to invite your input
into the conversation. If you would like to join us,

(04:36):
we're certainly happy to have you join us as well.
All you have to do is text the word Texas
follow by your question or comment. So when you text
the word Texas, you can go capital T and then
little EXAs if you want to do it that way,
or just all caps however, but you text the word
Texas and then after that you text your question and
comment on the same text line to eight one five

(04:59):
three zero Standard messaging and data rates may apply. That's
one way to do it. The other way to do
it is you can reach the program via our talk
back feature. And the way you do that is if
you haven't already downloaded the iHeart Radio app, what are
you waiting for it? It's easy, it's free, opens the

(05:20):
door to a lot of things for you there, so
there's no obligation at all. You just download the free
iHeart Radio app and then there's you know, one of
those little magnifying glass. You do a search, do a
search for AM thirteen hundred the zone. It'll come up
real quickly. And then what we suggest you go ahead
and make it a pre set because it makes it easier,
especially when we're contesting and giving away prices, for you

(05:41):
to kind of jump ahead of some folks and get
in the queue and have a better chance to win prizes.
So download a download the iHeart radio app. If you
don't haven't already done it, search AM thirteen under the zone,
and then you're going to see two buttons. One's a
little white one that's like in the shape of a triangle.
That's to listen to the programming on on the air here,
whether it's this program or the morning kickoff with Mike Hardball,

(06:04):
Hart and Mark Henry seven to nine. To listen to
our long horned game day coverage on Saturday morning or
afternoon in the case it'll be afternoon this week with
a seven o'clock kickoff. So that's what the little white
button is for. But there's a red button with a
white microphone in it. You tap that button, you leave
us a voice message that activates our talk back feature.

(06:27):
So again it's just three steps. Download the iHeartRadio app,
search AM thirteen under the zone. Then you're going to
see that red button with a white microphone. You tap
that button and you leave us up to thirty seconds
of a voice message giving your opinion on the Longhorns
of the Cowboys, or college football or whatever whatever it
might be.

Speaker 2 (06:46):
And that's the way you will.

Speaker 1 (06:47):
Also be involved in our contesting when we give away
tickets to concerts or whatever. We'll ask for a keyword
and you will repeat that when you do that. So
that's how easy it is to do that. Okay, So
your weekend went pretty well. You've got some color in
your face. That's good to see. You know, you're out
there in the sun.

Speaker 2 (07:06):
It's good. Yeah.

Speaker 4 (07:07):
I'm almost as red as that red button with a
white microphone right now.

Speaker 1 (07:11):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (07:12):
I was in the in the sun calling some soccer
on Sunday and then out in the sun talking to
some of you all on Saturday during the Longhorns game
day pregame.

Speaker 1 (07:20):
Okay, let's break it down for him. First of all,
Friday night, you were down there. It's at Bastrop Memorial Stadium.

Speaker 5 (07:27):
That's the one.

Speaker 2 (07:28):
The name of the down there in Cedar Creek.

Speaker 1 (07:30):
Nice place in it, it is, all right, So you
were there for that to call bas Drop against Preston
Wood Christian Academy. And the first text I got from you,
I believe the halftime scored. Now, I think it was
what forty two to ten and a half.

Speaker 2 (07:43):
It was like that.

Speaker 4 (07:44):
Well, no, it was forty two to twenty one. Okay,
the half, Okay, it should have been forty two to fourteen.
Prestonwood Christian scored in the closing seconds.

Speaker 1 (07:52):
Okay, So I was like, oh, okay, so Bastrop's in
good shape. Then the next time I get a text
from it was late in the game. It was like
fifty something to fifty something.

Speaker 4 (08:04):
It was like in the fourth quarter, right, Yeah, Preston
Wood Christian cut it to eight. They could have cut
it to seven. Tiki Hola blocked an extra point. The
Notre Dame commit on Basstrop's defensive line blocked the extra point,
and then Prestonwood Christian got the ball back down eight
after trailing at one point by twenty eight points.

Speaker 2 (08:25):
But Bastrop was able to pull away it hold on.
So they won seventy to fifty five.

Speaker 4 (08:29):
Yeah, and they were actually up seventy to forty nine earlier.
Preston Wood Christian scored in the waning seconds.

Speaker 1 (08:36):
Okay, all right, So you had that Friday, Then on Saturday,
you were down on site there a Bevo Boulevard Winship
Circle there the hook the hangout with Cam Parker and
Mike Hardball, Harge and Mark Henry. You guys were hanging
out down there doing long Orange game day. So what
was the scene like down there crowded.

Speaker 4 (08:56):
A lot more people turned out because of the later
kickoff time. Yep, that hour, probably before that second hour
of Longhorn game day, great crowds, a lot of people
hanging out in the shade that Winship Circle affords that
time of day.

Speaker 2 (09:12):
Yep.

Speaker 4 (09:12):
We had a crowd both right by our stage taking
some pictures with us, and we had a crowd waiting
sort of along that road leading up towards Deadman and
Bully Drive.

Speaker 2 (09:23):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (09:23):
Yeah, just hanging.

Speaker 4 (09:25):
Underneath the shady tree and listened to the show. Although
I'll tell you everyone that was sitting down they stood
up by the time Mark Henry's hype train rolled around.

Speaker 1 (09:31):
Yeah, absolutely, So as that going all right? So then
you had that, and of course we'll have the breakdown
on the Long Oranges game. We'll hear from Long ORNs
head coach Steve Sarcaisian. We brought you his news conference
live today here on thirteen under the Zone. We do
it every long WRNE Monday, every Monday, and we begin
our coverage at eleven am and then he begins his

(09:53):
news conference at eleven thirty from the ut campets. So
we're over there and we bring it to We did
it today live, but we bring you the highlights from it.
We realized that not everybody can listen right at that
hour at eleven thirty in the morning, maybe in meetings
or maybe at lunch, maybe with other people. That's why
we bring you the recap of it broken down into segments.
So we do that during this program and we'll do
that coming up. So, ye at the game Saturday, and

(10:17):
then yesterday you were calling soccer for Southwestern University, is
that right? Yeah?

Speaker 4 (10:21):
It was my first time there, and I know they
got a new football field under construction, but I was
out at their soccer stadium called shun out there in
the sun.

Speaker 3 (10:30):
It was beaming in.

Speaker 4 (10:32):
There was shade on top of me, but then it
was beaming right in on my beautiful radio made face.

Speaker 2 (10:38):
Okay, all right, So did you enjoy that I did?

Speaker 3 (10:41):
It was two very I mean, it showed off what
soccer can be.

Speaker 4 (10:44):
You had a four to three game in the women's game,
just you know, no lead felt safe, completely wild bounces
of the ball, everything going in. And then you had
a men's game that was I mean there were maybe
two good chances for each team in ninety minutes it
was a one nil win for.

Speaker 2 (10:59):
Southwest Okay against who who are they playing?

Speaker 4 (11:02):
The men played Texas Lutheran, Okay, and the women played
Harden Simmons the Cowgirls.

Speaker 2 (11:06):
Yeah, okay.

Speaker 1 (11:07):
So when the men played Texas Lutheran, did they have
that Toll one thirty trophy that they used to play
for in football?

Speaker 2 (11:13):
Did they have that out there?

Speaker 1 (11:14):
Because you know they're because each of these schools represent
the northern and southernmost ends of Toll one thirty, the
toll road. Southwesterners out there by Georgetown right before you know,
a empty's out there on the north side, and of
course Texas Lutheran's and Sageen which is the far south
end the south terminus there. And I remember when Joe
Austin was the head football coach used to say they

(11:35):
played for a toll or they were going to get
a Toll one thirty trophy. I don't know if they
ever got the trophy, but they were playing for the
bragging rights.

Speaker 5 (11:42):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (11:42):
I didn't see it. And you know those teams aren't
in the same conference anymore, No.

Speaker 2 (11:46):
They're not.

Speaker 1 (11:46):
Southwestern moved out of the American Southwest Conference and moved
into the Was it Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Associate or Southern.

Speaker 3 (11:53):
Yeah, the SAA.

Speaker 4 (11:54):
So now they'll be conference posed with Trinity and Texas
Lutheran had a challenging weekend. They went to Trinity, lost
one nil. Trendy's number six right now in D three
men's soccer. Then they had to go to Southwestern less
than forty eight hours later. That's number thirteen. So a
couple of top fifteen teams. Texas Lutheran played them tough
but lost one nil both times.

Speaker 2 (12:12):
Okay, all right, all.

Speaker 1 (12:14):
Right, So coming up, we're gonna hear from longwrn's head
coach Steve Sarkasian. We're also going to hear from Cowboys
head coach Brian schott Neiber. The Cowboys were winners yesterday.
It was highly entertaining television. I don't know, you were busy,
so you didn't get to see it. I heard the
radio call of overtime. Yeah, yeah, of course we carry

(12:36):
all the Cowboys broadcast on ninety eight point one FMK
BET and it was something else. So the Cowboys got
the win in that one and that and then of
course the Eagles beating the Chiefs was the other big
NFL headliner that and Aaron Rodgers as good as he
was the first week, not so much yesterday against Seattle.

(12:58):
But we've got some other things that we'll have you
listen to for some entertainment on Monday. And additionally, we
also have been conceivable this hour, so there's a lot
to get to on the program, and like I said,
we'll also have your thoughts, your questions, your comments. So
it's a Monday, a Longhorns Monday, and we're glad to
have you with us here on sports radio AM thirteen

(13:19):
under the Zone and the iHeartRadio app back here on
the program on thirteen hunder the Zone. You think the
computer will allow us to play some Sark sound here
from the.

Speaker 3 (13:28):
News conference, I'm not going to give it a choice.

Speaker 1 (13:30):
Okay, all right, we'll do it. This is from the
news conference. We brought it to you live. We do
it every Monday here on the Zone. We begin our
coverage from the UT campus at eleven am. Mike Hardbohartz
joins me for that, and then at eleven thirty we
bring the news conference with Sark, and then on this
program we do the recap of it, starting off with

(13:51):
is opening thoughts and injury updates. Important to know as
we bring you the comments from SARKS news conference.

Speaker 5 (13:59):
Tremendou turnout from our fans.

Speaker 6 (14:01):
As we said, you know, you you think about those
midday games in September. Those aren't easy and so over
the turnout by the fans the students over one hundred
thousand two straight games in September have been awesome. We'll
talk about the next game here in a minute. An
injury note, obviously, you know Cedric got hurt first play
the game. Hamstring injury, you know, significantly. We don't think

(14:24):
it's it's overly significant, but he'll be out this week
just from a precautionary standpoint to hopefully get him ready
for SEC play. Obviously, Cole Hudson, Kobe Black went down
in game. We'll monitor those guys throughout the week. We'll
see they're questionable. And Xavier Phil Samie did not play
in the game of the shoulder he'll be questionable this
week as well.

Speaker 5 (14:44):
So just some things to touch on that now.

Speaker 6 (14:46):
I think as the game goes and you watched it,
we really had an opportunity early in the game to
really seize the game. You know, when you when you
look at I think three of our first four drives
ended on on downs in utep territory and the other
drive was a touchdown. So we had an opportunity in
that game to really seize momentum, to really swing the game,

(15:07):
to go in the way that I think everybody.

Speaker 5 (15:09):
Expected it to go, the beauty of it.

Speaker 6 (15:11):
For us, it didn't go that way, and we had
to respond, and we had to respond differently to different
things in the game, and you learn a lot throughout
a game like that. I thought there were some highlights. Obviously,
Ryan Nibblett punt return that was huge for us. A
couple of returns he got were big. I think Jack
boomeiaster getting back to, you know, punting the way that
he can punt the football on special teams, and Mason

(15:32):
Shipley another really good game for him on that front.

Speaker 4 (15:36):
You know.

Speaker 6 (15:36):
Defensively, I thought our defense was stellar throughout three and
a half quarters. You know, I think we held them
to just over one hundred yards through through three and
a half quarters and then their final two drives. You know,
we give up one hundred and forty two yards on
the final two drives and the one touchdown, and so
we're really harping on our ability to finish defensively and
not give up that late drive and get back to

(15:58):
playing red zone defense way we were capable of playing naturally.
You know, we missed a few things in the passing
game and it was like, we're so close, and and
part of me is really excited about that because I
know how close we are to this thing hitting on
all cylinders. But that's our job as coaches and as
players to get us to that point, and I believe
we will. We've done it before and we'll do it again.

(16:20):
And then lastly is the penalties. You know, we had
eight penalties again and some of them are definitely correctable.
You know, we can't have two holding penalties again on
punt return. We had one a week before and we
had two this week, and so in that aspect, we
got to clean that up. Some of them are are
real penalties where they're kind of aggression, and again I

(16:41):
don't want to take our guys stinger on some of
those things, but we've got to be smarter on some
of the double moves, which again we grabbed a guy
on a double move on the perimeter. So things to
clean up, but more importantly for us, it is kind
of exciting because I think the things that we need
to clean up are very fixable, and that part's exciting
to me because that I can envision what it's going.

Speaker 5 (17:01):
To look like when we do clean it up.

Speaker 6 (17:03):
Fired up to be back at home here one more
time Saturday night, first night game in dk R with
with all of the bells and whistles and fireworks and
all the things. And so I know for our fans,
our players, that's exciting. We won't be back home again
until November first against Vanderbilt, So we got to make
the most of this opportunity at home this week. And

(17:23):
that'll be our emphasis throughout practice is to improve and
to play a brand and style of football.

Speaker 1 (17:31):
Okay, the next was came the questions, and it started
off about how does he go about coaching a quarterback
who's still trying to find his footing in the case
of Arch Manning.

Speaker 5 (17:47):
Just coach him. Just coach him. You know that that's
our job to coach.

Speaker 6 (17:51):
And you know, different scenarios call for for different measures
right of what you need to do. And you know,
I didn't you know, if if if Arch was having
a bunch of mental errors and and not operating the offense. Well,
then that might have maybe would have required it taken out.
I didn't feel like that was the case. So you know,

(18:11):
different different things require different things to to to get
your point across, and so you know, we handled it accordingly.
We'll handle it accordingly this week and expect him to
come out and have a great game Saturday.

Speaker 1 (18:21):
And that means handling adversity. And and Sark was speaking
to the point about Arch and the adversity he's having
to deal with.

Speaker 6 (18:27):
I think you hit the nail on the head. I
think some of this is really good. You know, here's
a guy who's had an awesome life. You know, he's
he's you know, the way he's grown up, where he played,
the school he went to, the people he's been surrounded by.
But but I think you learn a lot about yourself
through adversity and and and overcoming adversity and getting on
the other side of adversity.

Speaker 1 (18:48):
Uh.

Speaker 6 (18:49):
And so to have some of this adversity that he
has right now and when he gets on the other
side of it, I think all of this is going
to serve not only well for him, but well for
us as a team.

Speaker 1 (18:58):
And so.

Speaker 6 (19:00):
Love the challenge for him, Love the challenge for us.
And you know, he's a he's a strong minded guy.
He's got great work ethic, great poise, great composure. He's
an awesome teammate. And so I love, I love the
end of the movie for him, when he gets on
the other side of this. So looking forward to.

Speaker 2 (19:15):
It the end of the movie. I like that that comment.

Speaker 1 (19:17):
Okay, so with the passing game still not in the
stride that they are seeking, is he leaning into his
running game.

Speaker 5 (19:25):
I mean, obviously we leaned into him running the ball
a little bit more.

Speaker 6 (19:29):
And again, as I said Saturday, I think I think
we're gonna have to wrap our brains around that's kind
of now kind of part of our offense is utilizing
the quarterback run game. Some games will require more than others.
I think we were intentionally Saturday, I needed to find
out about these other three kids running the ball with

(19:49):
with Jeric and Christian and obviously James Simon, you know,
with with Trede down and with Cedric down finding out
about them. I think the style of defense dictates some
of that too. It was a bunch of three safety
don't give up deep balls against us, and so you know,
running the ball was advantageous. I felt like we left
a lot of meat on the bone in the run game.
You know, we probably should have had more yardage there

(20:10):
than we did, and that's something that'll be a point
of emphasis this week if we get a similar style defense.

Speaker 5 (20:16):
And so I think it all adds up to yes.

Speaker 6 (20:18):
I mean, you know, you're always trying to manage in
game and adapt in game.

Speaker 5 (20:22):
To what is occurring.

Speaker 6 (20:24):
You lose the running back to first play of the game,
they come out and play a different defense, your quarterback
struggling a little bit. Naturally, you gravitate more to running
the ball, and a lot of times it doesn't feel
as sexy, it doesn't feel as exciting. But there was
a lot to gain from that game for our players
to learn from and how to strain, how to finish
in the run game, and to do the things that
we need to do. So we're gonna need our run game.

(20:46):
I think we're making good strides, but I think it
can be better, and so that's that's our challenge, is
to improve that. A lot of young guys are seeing
action here early in the season. It's the expectation that
perhaps even more will see action Saturday evening when they play,
Sam Houston, and that includes guys who are really working
hard on the Scout Team, a lot of the younger
developmental guys, and Sark was asked is he happy with

(21:09):
the progress of those guys and how many of those
guys he wants to get on the field.

Speaker 5 (21:13):
I mean, I'm happy, I sure want I want to
play them all, you know.

Speaker 6 (21:16):
I think all of our guys, you know, are working
and earning opportunities to play, and I love to play
as many of them as we can. You know, I
praised our Scout Team guys this morning in the team
meeting and gave out of a bunch of awards to
those guys this week because they're doing a fantastic job
and it's you know, they're improving individually and that's helping them.

(21:38):
But they're giving great looks to all three phases. They're
earning more opportunities on office, defensive, special teams because of
that work. But being able to praise those guys for
the work that they're doing and continuing to push them
down that road is great. But naturally they want to
play too, and I want to play them, but we
have to earn the opportunity to get them on the field,

(21:59):
and that recques all of us to do a better job.
You know, then maybe we've done the last couple of
weeks to get them out there sooner.

Speaker 1 (22:06):
At the left guard spot, Connor stro played the majority
of the snaps there and they went on Saturday. Now
he is in rotation with net omoz Alou, but he
did play the preponderance of the snaps, and so Sark
was asked about is Strow really won the left guard
job and is the Rother offensive line cross training that's
going on.

Speaker 6 (22:25):
I think the thing for us is one you know,
we for so many years we had so much continuity
up front, and we had so much trust in a
lot of those guys, even maybe we weren't at our best,
that they could work well together, and so striving for
that continuity right now I think is important. We just
felt like going into the week we're now we're kind

(22:46):
of gauging it on a week to week basis about
Connor had a really good week of practice, felt.

Speaker 5 (22:51):
Comfortable with him in there.

Speaker 6 (22:53):
You know, a lot of times when you're facing defenses
like we played Saturday, there there's so much twisting, stunting, slanting.
We had a lot of times we had guys pulling
and there wasn't even anyone there for them to block
at times, how do you continue to play? And I
think that's where we have to strain differently. It's not
your traditional you know, four down front fit gaps or

(23:14):
odds structure fitting gaps. It's kind of guys are here,
guys are jumping over here, the safety's coming from here,
the corners over there, and so now your football IQ
has to rise up, and now you have to play
unconventional style and finish plays and runners have to run
that way too. It's not so hey, this is how
you draw it up on the board, because it's fitting
different every time. And so you know, what we tried

(23:37):
to do Saturday is kind of repeat some calls so
that we could find a little bit of a rhythm
into blocking the multitude of looks that we were getting,
rather than just keep running new plays. And every time
you ran it was the first time they were getting
it versus the defense we were getting. And so now
it's banking those reps with anticipation of we could see
more of stuff like that and then carry it over

(23:58):
into practice and carry it over into the next week
of work and so to me, I think there was
a lot to gain from last week's game. There's a
lot to learn from in the film work this morning,
which I think we will as far as that, you know,
I think naturally, you know, Connor stepped right in. I
think he played like seventeen or eighteen plays at center
when Cole went out. You know, Danny Cruz obviously is

(24:21):
very capable at center. Connor Strow actually works at center
as well, and so we're always cross training. To me,
it's always like the most important position on the old
line because he possesses the ball to start every play,
and so we got to be mindful of that spot
that we're constantly training people at that position.

Speaker 2 (24:38):
All right, there's some from Sark.

Speaker 1 (24:41):
We'll hear more from the Lowren's head coach coming up
next hour and in the four o'clock hour. However, coming
up next is a Monday edition of Inconceivable.

Speaker 2 (24:52):
That's next one.

Speaker 1 (24:53):
We continue right here on Sports Radio AM thirteen under
the Zone in the iHeartRadio app zone Craig wait with
the alongside of the producer Jake Carman. Glad have you
with us here on a Monday afternoon. I'll tell you
what else We're glad to be able to do for you,
and that is to let you hear the sound of joy.
You see, I'm one of those people believes that there's

(25:17):
probably not enough joy in our lives these days, and
wherever you can find it, hopefully not at the expense
of others, unless you're in a competitive situation like on
the football field.

Speaker 2 (25:30):
I'm all for that. Well it was. It was joy,
although a little bit muted yesterday for the team.

Speaker 1 (25:37):
I root for the Rams. They're still trying to find
their way. But there are two and oh, so that's good.
And not only they're two and oh against the AFC South,
which is weird. They've played they've already played two of
the teams, beating the Texans and yesterday the Titans, and
then in two more weeks that the Colts coming in.

Speaker 2 (25:54):
And then at some point they'll be who else am
I leaving out out of the South that they would
that they would Jaguars, the Jags, Yeah, they've got them
later on.

Speaker 4 (26:03):
The only bad news for you is a Rams fan
right now, the whole rest of the division gets to
see those AFC South teams.

Speaker 2 (26:08):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, and and.

Speaker 1 (26:10):
And the rest of the division looks pretty good by
the way. You know what they the what forty nine
ers are two and oh yes, and the Seahawks bounce
back this week after losing.

Speaker 3 (26:22):
To the Niners.

Speaker 1 (26:23):
Yeah, and the Cardinals are two and o two and
o barely Yeah, so uh so anyway, so that's so
that's the deal with that. But hey, the Dallas Cowboys
bounce back. They're one and one. Won that crazy game
with the New York Giants yesterday. Uh they were ahead,
they were down, they scored in the waning seconds of

(26:45):
the game, and so I thought, Okay, they're going to win.
And then Malik Naghbors, who just ate me up in
fantasy football for my opponent, comes back with a big
touchdown caj But the Cowboys get themselves in position for
ran In Aubrey to hit a sixty four yard game
time field goal, gets it into overtime, and then in

(27:07):
the overtime, after the Cowboys can do anything with it,
then the Giants can, then the Cowboys can, then the Giants.
The Cowboys get three chances in a ten minute overtime,
and they finally come through an Aubrey knocks home a
forty six yard field goal. Dak Prescott big run there
on third down. So the Cowboys get to win. And
this is what it sounded like, is Brian Schottneimber, the

(27:29):
head coach, was counting off the victory in the locker
room and all the good things that came out of
it for his team.

Speaker 5 (27:37):
Yeah, I'm very special man for you.

Speaker 2 (27:38):
First game ball first went thank you.

Speaker 7 (27:54):
Hey, here's what we do, Hey, we celebrate cool, we win,
turnin down a touchdown, drove out there and touchdown mom
stairs down, touchdown?

Speaker 5 (28:05):
Who picking dog got touched out?

Speaker 2 (28:08):
Wait for it?

Speaker 8 (28:09):
Interception leaving down?

Speaker 3 (28:17):
Who had a sick James?

Speaker 7 (28:18):
Who's that sign?

Speaker 2 (28:20):
Jenny Clark had a sign?

Speaker 7 (28:21):
Yeah?

Speaker 9 (28:22):
Hey, and this son, my god man, this field goal
kickery fifty one yard field goal, forty four yard field
goal sixty four yard feel wait in overtime with the walk.

Speaker 7 (28:40):
Of forty.

Speaker 2 (28:45):
You know, the only thing missing out of that was
how about that be? How I you have that off
of there?

Speaker 3 (28:49):
So that's what Jerry was doing. He dround out.

Speaker 2 (28:52):
Jerry was right there in the locker room with him,
well he was, and he was enjoying that.

Speaker 1 (28:56):
So with that in mind, I had to bring in
the cowboys own self loathing fan and man of this building,
Cameron D. Parker, from whom the middle initial the stands
for Dallas was named as such for his dad's favorite

(29:16):
football team, which was his And then he got angry
with him and said he wasn't gonna watch him and
all that.

Speaker 2 (29:21):
Kind of stuff.

Speaker 1 (29:21):
So I had to get there. They had to get
the review from me about all of this kind of thing,
because I know, even though Jake is doing the producing,
you're still in the building, so I mean, you know,
and you were with me out there obviously engineered producing
our long orange Monday stuff there. So it's not like
I don't see you every day, but I still but
fans don't get to hear you every day, so they
know how you feel about the Cowboys. So that's why

(29:43):
you got to present the other side as well.

Speaker 2 (29:45):
And it hasn't changed.

Speaker 1 (29:47):
You said don't be fooled after that competitive loss to
the Eagles, right right, Okay, you said don't be fooled.

Speaker 10 (29:55):
I remember that, And for a moment there, ohen two
always were staring at zero to two directly in the face. Now,
I wondered for a moment there in the second half
if the Giants were going to retire Russell Wilson's number,
Wandel Robinson's number, Malik Neighbor's number before they even landed
back in New York, because he absolutely towards the Dallas

(30:18):
secondary four hundred and fifty yards from Russell Wilson. I mean,
who knew he even still had it in the tank.
And then it was the quintessential Russell Wilson game, right,
you know, all the yards, all the touchdowns and then
just a terrible interception to give the Cowboys a chance
to win that game, a game that they should not

(30:39):
have won.

Speaker 2 (30:40):
It was what.

Speaker 10 (30:42):
I don't think either team had scored in the twenties
yet when the fourth quarter started and then the game ends.

Speaker 2 (30:49):
At forty to thirty seven.

Speaker 10 (30:51):
Super You know, I'm lated for Brian Schottenheimer because I
think he's a good football coach, seems like a great guy.
Congrats to him on his first win. Congrats to everyone
who had Brendan Aubrey in fantasy football. I think twenty
three points for for most standard scoring leagues, but overall Craig, Yeah,
giving up thirty seven points the New York Giants and
Russell Wilson not ideal, not ideal, But uh, how about

(31:15):
them Cowboys.

Speaker 1 (31:16):
Yeah, sou but you're you're still not ready to buy
in on him yet.

Speaker 10 (31:20):
No, this team is terrible. The defense terrible. Believes no
pass rush at all. Two sacks I think another Houston
one came on the first drive in which was it
the giants of the lineman committed by like four straight
plies in a row. But if New York could have
figured out how the score touchdowns in the first half,
Dallas would have been thrilling by a bigger margin in

(31:43):
the second half and would not have had a chance
to win that game at all. But no pass rush
at all. Secondary was getting absolutely toasted by Rob Biggs.
Does not look like he's ready to be playing again,
I will give you that.

Speaker 2 (31:57):
And who did Jerry pay over Micah Parsons? Oh yeah,
Trayvon Diggs.

Speaker 10 (32:01):
By the way, Green Bay Packers best defense in the
NFL through two weeks.

Speaker 2 (32:04):
I think so, I think so.

Speaker 10 (32:07):
But the defense just is not very good at this moment.
You know, with Jaydon Daniels now with the knees spraying,
you know, we'll see he's probably week to week. And Commanders,
you know, don't seem to be having the same success
they had last year. Although it only is through two
weeks and the Giants are just an abysmal, bismal NFL franchise.

Speaker 2 (32:26):
I think I forget who it was.

Speaker 10 (32:28):
But if you look at like the last ten years
in the NFL, if the NFL had adopted English Premier
League relegation style, I believe the New York Giants would
be the most relegated franchise in the last decade, not
the Jets. I think it's the Giants from what from
what this one report? I could be wrong, I could.
I have not back took this. I just heard this

(32:48):
on a podcast. Now, that's pretty funny at least up
there with the Jets in the last decade, because I
don't think either Giants maybe have one playoff appearance.

Speaker 3 (32:56):
Yeah, in the last ten years, Jets had the longest
playoff drift.

Speaker 10 (33:00):
Longest playoff drought. So uh ns the East. Look in
the Eagles, who just pushed their way to a win.
I'm so done with that play. We can agree on
going away. We can agree on that as commander and
Cowboy fans. Yeah, I think the everyone in the NFL
is done with that play. I think even the Eagles
offensive lineman are done with that play, but there are
two know the Cowboys are one and one and Chicago

(33:23):
next week. Who the kill Williams saga is only getting
worse and worse, but Green Bay in week four, which
of course will develop some great storylines. But after that,
Stag gets real, real tough Craig, and this is a
very top heavy Cowboys team, So all it takes is
one injury that Dak or Javonte Williams, who's been very surprising,

(33:45):
he's been great. George Pickens when he actually completes his
route has been great. But one of those guys go
down in this Cowboys season, cow off the rails. So
such such a shame, Such a shame.

Speaker 1 (33:59):
Okay, you have since handed over the producer duties of
this program to Jake. I'm trying to remember was Chuck
and Houston on board with us when you and I
were still doing it, because he's becomes as prevalent to
the program as Seapow and good CB and CB a
little bit I can't remember. But the reason why I

(34:21):
bring this up is this was a I listen, Chuck,
I congratulate you man, because you're the first one. You're
the first precinct to report in with this request good
money to you. I know it's premature, he said, but
if Manny I think you meant Manning continues to struggle.
Do you think there's a chance we see the backup

(34:42):
or no, we've already gotten into the backup.

Speaker 2 (34:45):
We got to the backup, Chuck, here's the deal.

Speaker 1 (34:48):
Before your birthday, Craig, we got there. Yeah, yeah, really, Chuck,
can you tell me who the backup quarterback is? Let's
start with that. Can you tell me who the backup
quarterback is? You'd have to start with that and go
from there. All that said in the in the joke,
and we heard Sark talking about in the press conference today.
He's he remains supremely optimistic in what he thinks Arch

(35:12):
is going to be able to do, and is that
he's still stepping through some issues and around some.

Speaker 3 (35:16):
Issues to improve.

Speaker 10 (35:17):
I think some reporters there today we're kind of surprised
at how jovial Sark is. And you know, I thought
about it, and it was like, you know, because you know,
every Wednesday we tape Longhorn weekly from an undisclosed location
and we're around Sark off the camera and he's the
exact same way, you know, he's very upbeat, jovial, jubilant,

(35:38):
is enjoying himself. So what's happening in practice maybe hasn't
translated yet to the football field for the full you know,
sixty minutes yet, but Sark believes it's coming soon. And
you know, we're only we're three games in, and I
think the number one preseason ranking, along with Arch being
the favorite to when the Heisman in Taxes, being favorites

(36:00):
to win it all maybe kind of inflated even even
my my expectations. Probably this team would look in the
first month, now here's the thing, and it might seem
far fetch craig, but Texas is still in the College
fotball playoff. Un every team, miss sure, there's a long way.
Notre Dame now, yeah, maybe Notre Dame although they're still ranked.

(36:22):
Not sure about U c l A.

Speaker 2 (36:24):
They are. They've made coaching changes, yes, but this.

Speaker 10 (36:29):
This this team is there's a lot of room for
improvement and Sark recognizes that. And he talked about the
growth and the consistency and how the team just needs
to improve. And you know, you said it again today
and we talked about it on Long Horn's game day
on Saturday, replacing a lot of key guys from the
offense last season. Right brand new quarterback j Baxter was

(36:49):
un healthy last season, Trey Wiser has been out. Receiver room,
Texas lost their their top three receivers, including Gunnerhelm from
last year. So you step in now. Ryan Wing has
to be the number one guy. You bring in Parker Livingston,
and then of course DeAndre Moore who's had his injuries
so far this season as well, and behind him Craig
bunch of freshmen in red short freshman too tight ends,

(37:10):
Jack Andrews, brand new Amari Winston, Nick Townsend, Spencer Shedd
and all guys who did not play a lot of
meaningful football this past year.

Speaker 2 (37:18):
So it's going to take some time.

Speaker 10 (37:20):
And I think the Texas fans, along with the local
media and the national media, are kind of expecting Arch
to come out and throw for four hundred and fifty
yards and five touchdowns in Texas and run into like
the number one team. They're not there yet. Now will
they get there remains to be seen. But I think
that's why Sark is so optimistic about this football team.
I don't I can't imagine him, you know. I know

(37:42):
there's always some coaches out there that are referred to
as was it what Jimbo always referred to as a
snake oil salesman? Yes, oil salesman. I don't think this
is what Sark is doing. Yeah, I don't think so.

Speaker 1 (37:54):
Okay, Okay, I want you to stick around because I
want you to hear one other thing. Okay, have you
heard Brian Kelly's rant?

Speaker 2 (38:02):
Which one? Which one? Is this one the latest one?
Have you heard that one? Oh, you're gonna enjoy this one.

Speaker 1 (38:08):
All right, We're gonna take a break and come back
and have you listened to this and get your thoughts
because it kind of speaks a little bit to what
we're talking about, your about fan expectation and media expectation.
I think it's important to distinguish to do because some
fans are really, really good and they understand it's going
to take a while. And there's a lot of media
who understands it's that this is a developmental process.

Speaker 2 (38:28):
But they're those they're.

Speaker 1 (38:29):
On the other side of that, and we'll hear about
that coming up when we continue here on a Monday,
A long runs Monday.

Speaker 2 (38:35):
I'm thirteen under the zone. That's Joan Jet.

Speaker 4 (38:38):
It's Joan Jet and it's about the former producer of
this program, and he's hating himself Dallas Cowboys.

Speaker 1 (38:44):
Hating himself for loving the Cowboys. Yeah, the Cameron Parker,
he actually doesn't hate himself. He's just he's learned to
self loathe a little bit and hate the Cowboys at
the same time.

Speaker 2 (38:54):
It's good.

Speaker 1 (38:54):
I think he's comfortable with that. Now you've you've kind
of become bad. Where's your dad on this? Now?

Speaker 2 (39:00):
He named you for the Dallas Cowboys? Where is he
on this deal?

Speaker 10 (39:04):
So I was, actually I don't watch the Cowboys football,
as you know, but I do listen to the Cowboys,
mostly because it's now my job, but also because you know,
I want to listen to Brad Sham and Babe Loathlmberg
and Babe had some real nice comments about you, Crag.
Of course, Babe was here on Saturday the Texas uteb game.
His son Luke, who passed away from from cancer, was

(39:25):
a football player for the Miners. His number two jersey
has I've been retired? How did they describe it? It's
honored honored by Marcus Torres, who, of course his father
Mark Torres, the head coach of the beda Hayes Hawks
high school football program. Babe was here for a little
bit and then he left, actually the third quarter drive
back up to Dallas and he had to get.

Speaker 1 (39:43):
His game prep together for the Giants game yesterday. And
by the way, Marcus Torris caught his first colleague to pass.

Speaker 2 (39:49):
On, so that was really cool.

Speaker 10 (39:50):
And of course Cowboys football on ninety eight one cave
at all season long. So listening to the crazy, crazy
ending of the Cowboys Giants game, and I texted my
dad was like, you are you watching this? He goes, no,
I'm on the trail, you know, So he's he's gonna
he's completely out as most Cowboys fans I know that
I'm friends with are are completely out in this football team.

Speaker 2 (40:12):
Okay, all right, So the big if is they turn
around and find a way to get into the playoffs.
Are you back on you?

Speaker 1 (40:20):
Yeah, you've been on records saying they got to reach
the NFC championshipeah to draw you back in, really yeah,
I think?

Speaker 2 (40:25):
Yeah?

Speaker 1 (40:25):
Okay, all right, I want you to listen to this
because this this describes the relationship that some coaches have
with their local media. And I would not put sark
in this category. I don't think it goes as hard
edged with that, but the theme the themes were similar.
There was a lot of dissatisfaction that was typed written

(40:51):
said from different media with regard to the long Orange
only beating U TAP twenty seven to ten. Saturday night,
LSU defeated Florida twenty to ten. An SEC opponent. Rian
Kelly was very very happy about it until one specific
reporter wanted to talk to him about his running game.

Speaker 6 (41:11):
Brian in the back, I know you love these immediate
postgame sessions, but what are you seeing with your offense?

Speaker 2 (41:17):
Stop?

Speaker 4 (41:17):
Really?

Speaker 2 (41:18):
Is that the first question?

Speaker 5 (41:19):
We won the game twenty to ten.

Speaker 2 (41:21):
Try another question. What do you want me to tell you?

Speaker 5 (41:24):
I just laid it out for you. We played the
game to win the game. We played the game to
win the game.

Speaker 8 (41:32):
All right?

Speaker 5 (41:32):
How about third down?

Speaker 8 (41:33):
Then?

Speaker 2 (41:33):
What is going on with third down?

Speaker 11 (41:35):
It's one game. Last game, we were great on third down.
You micro, you're looking at this from the wrong perspective.
LSU won the football game, won the game. I don't
know what you want from me.

Speaker 5 (41:50):
What do you want? You want to win seventy to
nothing against Florida to keep you happy?

Speaker 7 (41:54):
No?

Speaker 12 (41:54):
I think people want to know why you can't run
the ball. Quite well, we can run the ball. Did
you see the last play of the game. That's all
you need, You just need one. There's a ridiculous questions
and I'm getting.

Speaker 2 (42:07):
Tired of it.

Speaker 11 (42:08):
That football team just work their tail off to get
an SEC win, and you want to know what's wrong.

Speaker 2 (42:15):
You know what, You're spoiled. You're spoiled.

Speaker 11 (42:19):
This team is seventeen and one at night, seventeen and one.

Speaker 2 (42:23):
Give them some respect? How about that?

Speaker 5 (42:26):
Give them some respect instead.

Speaker 11 (42:27):
Of micro analyzing every little thing.

Speaker 5 (42:30):
This is ridiculous.

Speaker 2 (42:32):
For a group of seasoned reporters, that kind of question
is so out.

Speaker 3 (42:38):
Of line, ridiculous.

Speaker 1 (42:43):
Craig Now, I can't possibly imagine hearing seeing Sark get
to that level.

Speaker 2 (42:51):
But first of all, their personalities are quite a bit
different there.

Speaker 10 (42:54):
In Sark has his kind of I think every head
coach postgame is kind of in a mood win or
lose to where you know, I think in a Monday
press conference like today, and as we hear from Brian Kelly,
more relaxed, right, probably in a better mood. They've they're
actually got some sleep because they probably did not sleep
at all prior to the football game and being outside

(43:16):
and the elements in the back and forth. Usually coaches
just aren't the most personable following a game, win or lose.
And that's just that exchange is that might be my
favorite exchange between reporter in credits to the reporter for
him down running game. You know, and you know even

(43:39):
last Monday, right, you know, with the questions about arch
and you know I don't film you when you go
to the bathroom.

Speaker 2 (43:44):
Yeah, type deals.

Speaker 1 (43:45):
There's a there will be a comment every now, but
it's not at that level, that volume, that intensity, all
of which led to Brian Kelly figuring out eventually he
might have gone a little too far.

Speaker 5 (44:00):
I get to.

Speaker 13 (44:02):
The game in Southeast Louisiana, I want to go back
to the press conference after the game. I've tested with
Mike and offered my apology to him for the way
I handled the questioning. I think it's important to understand that,
you know, my standards relative to how we work with

(44:24):
the media on a day to day basis need to
be higher, and I take responsibility for that and I'll
be better in the future. And understanding also the way
I'm thinking after a game and we've mentioned this a
couple of times in here.

Speaker 5 (44:41):
The emotions of the game right after it. I haven't
watched any film.

Speaker 13 (44:46):
It's difficult to make those assessments of specifics.

Speaker 5 (44:52):
And I'm going to defend my team. I'm going to
defend my players first and foremost.

Speaker 13 (44:57):
But having said that, I publicly oologized to Mike, and uh,
he's an outstanding report.

Speaker 5 (45:03):
He works hard, and we'll do better moving forward.

Speaker 1 (45:07):
So here it is what would have been crazy to
open up the prins Carverson? So what about your running game.

Speaker 2 (45:16):
If had happened that way? But uh, yeah, he probably
figured probably did.

Speaker 1 (45:22):
A little bit, a little bit, just a little had
the intensity amped up just a little bit on Saturday
night after the game big win over Florida. I mean,
I know Florida's wanted two, and I know Billion Apier's
on the hot seat, and there's already people that are
telling people around the Texas program, Hey mean, he may
not be here by the time you guys get here.
You know, that kind of grumbling, that kind that they
play at Miami this week. But uh, you know it's uh.

(45:49):
I would just say that the relationship between coaches and
media is a little different now than it was back
in the day.

Speaker 2 (45:55):
Clearly, whenever back in the day, whenever that refers to
or whatever.

Speaker 1 (45:59):
And the same thing with an as well, because a
lot of the media are geared direct pipeline media to
fans fan sites. There's a lot of that, and to
be fair to the reporters, a lot of times they're
merely asking the questions that the fans are asking them
to ask. If you don't ask this, you can't even
hold your head up as a report. Blah blah blah.
Not that they feel any pressure about it, but maybe

(46:19):
they feel some responsibility.

Speaker 2 (46:20):
To ask certain questions.

Speaker 10 (46:23):
Yeah, there's always you know, on the message boards that
the fans science. You know, sometimes I'll look through the
threads and it's like, why didn't anyone ask sark this question? Yeah, exactly,
That's what I mean. There's always a lot of that.
And yeah, I mean, if you know, some of these riders,
maybe they feel compelled to the number one topic in
the game thread it's about third downs. Then they feel

(46:44):
compelled to ask about it because they feel like it's
their duty to possibly write about it. It's the same thing.
It's also Brian Kelly's duty to defend his team. And
that's why sometimes we'll hear coaches talk about why I
haven't seen the game tape game tape yet following the game.
I think Craig doing. Doing those press conferences postgame endgame
is one of the toughest things, not only for a reporter,

(47:07):
but also for the head coach to be able to
handle it in a dignified matter, because I'm, you know,
like Brian Kelly Starks a pretty fiery guy, right you.
You've seen it before, you know, and you've got to
figure out a way to kind of temper your your mood,
possibly your your anger or exuberants to the speak in
a in a tone that might beat that may not,

(47:27):
or try to speak a tone that isn't condescending to reporters,
and and also not bash your team for for playing
bad and trying to upload them. It's it's a very
tough line to walk, I think as a reporter and
also as as a head coach. Personally, I don't know
about you, Craig. I'm okay with Brian's Kelly's response, just
as like I'm okay with the reporter's question. I think
both are very fair.

Speaker 2 (47:47):
Yeah, yeah, you know, it's.

Speaker 1 (47:53):
You know, I think Brian Kelly makes a point, but
I understand Brian Kelly pointing out that you are microanalyzing
one segment, one portion of the game by the same token.
You understand the reporter going I had look struggle with
the run a game. Yeah you had the one big
run at the end or whatever. Haven't been good on

(48:14):
third downs. The thing about Sarcus, he beats a lot
of reporters to the punch on that stuff is we
weren't good on third down.

Speaker 2 (48:21):
The penalties were ridiculous.

Speaker 1 (48:22):
We got it is so we asked that he I mean,
he lays that out and I would say in some
ways that disarms some of the porters a little bit,
and so then they have to move to a different
question as results.

Speaker 10 (48:32):
I think we saw that with Arch two on Saturday
when after the game he talks about I thought Arch
was pressing, you know, and he wants to come out
and you know, not harp on his quarterback too much,
but also addressed the elephant in the room exactly. And
I think that, as you said, kind of sets the
tone with the rest of the press conference and what
he's gonna be asked about, because today he was asked
about Arch for five six times. Perhaps no questions about

(48:55):
Sam Houston, by the way, under hits again, under hits again.

Speaker 1 (49:00):
Wait a minute, Wait a minute, Wait a minute. When
there's the one about well Danny Davis, question about yes.

Speaker 2 (49:05):
I believe one, it's a broader one.

Speaker 3 (49:07):
We'll leave that up to the scorers later.

Speaker 2 (49:10):
The jeopardy judges. Okay, all right, Well, I just wanted
to check in with you and get some get some
shoddy fans still alive for those of you who are wondering,
I'm here.

Speaker 1 (49:19):
By the way, since you've been elevated to middle management status. Now,
did you ever have any Brian Brian Kelly like moments
with any other employee?

Speaker 2 (49:27):
But usually have my door shut?

Speaker 1 (49:28):
Why are you asking about your schedule as a season producer?

Speaker 2 (49:33):
Yeah? Season producer? Yeah?

Speaker 10 (49:34):
Well, what was Brian Kelly wanting to say in that moment?
And then what did he change it to that? That's
what I want to know, because he took a second
there to say seasoned veterans?

Speaker 2 (49:41):
I think you add another word. Maybe it was SOB's
I don't know.

Speaker 5 (49:46):
I am.

Speaker 10 (49:47):
The college football is back though, and hey, Brian Kelly's
kind of growing on me. You know, maybe because we
don't play lsu we haven't played him yet as an
SEC member in football, but I enjoys press conferences. Kelly
Napier was asked today about his job security and he
handled it in a dignified manner because some coaches don't.

Speaker 2 (50:04):
Yeah, some don't. I think you know.

Speaker 1 (50:07):
Some coaches, like in the case of Napier's like, look,
it's quite simple. In the Power five school, you're expected
to win, you expected to contend and compete for a
conference championship, and when you fall short of that, there
are going to be those who are a unhappy with you.
And then ultimately if it goes to step B wanting
a change to be made and coaches understand that they

(50:29):
know what they know what it's all about.

Speaker 2 (50:31):
Okay, So that's Cameron Parker.

Speaker 1 (50:32):
You can hear him on our Long Horns game day side,
which this Saturday helped me out here on this lay
this out for me. Our coverage coverage of the Texas
Longhorns on the Zone will actually begin at what roughly two.

Speaker 10 (50:49):
Three o'clock, three o'clock with the third Longhorn with the
Third and Long Horn Review podcasts. Okay, Nick Suley, the
third and Longhorn Gain that will begin at three four
live from look him hang out on Bevo Boulevard Longhorn
Game Day.

Speaker 2 (51:05):
I will not be there. I'll be at a wedding.
Yes I know, I know another wedding that's not his own.

Speaker 10 (51:11):
Mike Hardballhart, the world strongest man, Mark Henry will be
out there. I believe we're gonna have Eric Henry from
Horns two four seven join them too, though, have special
guests as well. It'll be a great show if you
listen to the morning kickoff. Those guys are hilarious around
each other. And then of course at six o'clock not
on the zone but a ninety eight one caved in

(51:32):
one of three one FM. It will be Texas versus
Sam Houston. So it's no longer Sam Houston State. It's
just Sam Houston. Here's the deal. This is I'm getting
a little confused. He here's the deal.

Speaker 1 (51:44):
The official name of the university sam Houston State University,
just as the official name of the school that sits
on the Mississippi River there in the state of Tennessee
is Memphis State University. Just as the school in your
hometown is the University of North Carolina, just as the
one in southwestern southeastern Tennessee is called the University of

(52:04):
Tennessee Chattanooga. But in the interest of quicker recognition, all
of these schools have asked that you simply go buy
their names Memphis, Charlotte, Chattanooga, and Sam Houston. Now, if
you're referring, and they even say this in their game notes,
if you're referring the institution as all Sam Houston State University,

(52:24):
you will hear me say on Saturday at the start
taking on the Bearcats of Sam Houston State University. Every
reference after that is going to be Sam Houston. So
it's just let everybody know up front, and then it's
Sam Houston. They just want to be known as Sam Houston.
And that's okay.

Speaker 3 (52:38):
That's what a season broadcaster does.

Speaker 1 (52:41):
Well, you make enough mistakes, you learn right, you know,
just ask Brian Kelly. All right, we've got more coming
up here on thirteen Under the Zone. This was a
hit from the group The Monkeys nineteen sixty eight, Last
train in the Clarkspell and I and a friend of mine.
I made a really good point about this, is that
the Monkeys perhaps didn't get all their best do because

(53:03):
They were kind of a made for television band because
of the television show. But Mickey Dolans was very, very
talented in Davy Jones and Michael Nesmyth perhaps the most
talented of them all right. I went to see him
late in his life. It was a couple of years ago,
three or four years ago, and he was performing at
the Kessler Theater in Dallas, and then he did a

(53:26):
thing with Mickey Dolan's were the two surviving members of
the Monkeys, and they did a little tour thing together.
But Nessmuth was in declining Helton and he passed away
just a few months ago. So Mickey Dolans is the
only remaining member of the Monkeys. The reason why I
had Jake bring us back with that tune because that

(53:47):
song was co written by two guys, Tommy Boyce and
Bobby Hart, and those two wrote other big hits. That
was the number one hit in nineteen sixty six. Also
they wrote the theme song for the Monkeys. They had
a number three hot, one hundred hit in Valerie. They
had I Want to Be Free, I'm Not Your stepping

(54:08):
stone words uh and and Bobby Hart passed away yesterday.

Speaker 2 (54:14):
He was eighty six long illness.

Speaker 1 (54:16):
He also wrote the theme song for Days of Our Lives,
the soap opera that's like, that's like Barry Manilow writing
when he wrote the theme song for McDonald's that you
Deserve a Break Today, Barry Manelo wrote that, you.

Speaker 4 (54:31):
Know, they glossed right over the monkeys in my history
of rock class that I took at the University of Texas,
I understand that.

Speaker 2 (54:37):
I understand.

Speaker 1 (54:37):
Like I said, maybe they don't get their due, but
they were they were, they were talented. Not their problem
was timing. They came along even though they were popular.
They came along when the Beatles were at The Beatles
wrote all their own music, so that's why they were
dismissed by many. But but Bobby Hart was a big

(54:58):
part of that and wa ultimately.

Speaker 7 (55:03):
He was.

Speaker 1 (55:06):
A major songwriting influence as well as Tommy Boyce. So anyway,
all right, let's hear some more from Logorn's head coach
Steve Sarkeishan from this is from today's press conference here,
and he was asked about the whole form of entertainment
and entertainment through football, and you know, the team is

(55:30):
not only expected to win by a lot of people,
be the media or fans or whatever the but supposedly
they're supposed to be expected to win in an entertaining fashion.
And Sark was asked, is that fair that that expectation
should be put on them?

Speaker 6 (55:47):
Yes and no, I think that's a fair question. I
think part of part of what we do we are
entertainers in some aspect. You know, you know, we we
sell out our stadium, you know, every every season. You know,
we have more season ticket holders now than we've ever had.
We've got a gigantic TV deal right from from with

(56:07):
the SEC, and so part of it is the entertainment.
But the entertainment is a byproduct of a positive performance.
And part of that positive performance is a byproduct of
really good preparation, really good practice, play in a style
and a brand of football that that we're proud of
in the way that we play. And then I think

(56:27):
that in essence that is the entertainment for our fans,
is that we play to the to the brand and
the style that we've made around here that.

Speaker 5 (56:34):
People are accustomed to.

Speaker 6 (56:35):
And so to me, that's that's somewhat of a compliment,
you know, that that we've raised the bar into the
standard of the way we play the game of football
around here, and not only do we hold it to
ourselves to that, our fans are holding us to that.
And so that's that should serve as motivation for us
to say, hey, we've got to play to the to
the standard, and we got to meet it, and then
we've got to try to exceed it. We got to
make it even better than it's ever been before.

Speaker 1 (56:58):
Then there was another question and Danny Davis and the
Austin American Statesman asked this question of starg Texas will
be playing Sam Houston for the first time in I
guess it would be nineteen years. They played them in
two thousand and six when they were add on them
when the twelfth game was added and Minnesota dropped off
the schedule and then so they added Sam Houston. Back then,

(57:21):
they were known as Sam Houston State on a regular basis.
They were an FCS program, which is like one double A.
We used to call one double A, you know in
the Southland Conference with Lamar and Steven f Austin and
those schools. They're not FCS anymore, they are FBS, Which

(57:41):
you said, what's the biggest difference between those with some
smaller schools, because there's some small Division one FBS schools
and there are. The difference is largely scholarship. Sixty three
scholarships I think at the FCS level eighty five at
the FBS level, that's the biggest difference. But Texas has
not played a CS opponent since then, and so Sark

(58:04):
was asked, is that a good thing or what's the
philosophy that goes into a purposeful avoidance of scheduling an
FCS opponent.

Speaker 6 (58:16):
I struggle with this because nowadays, you know, we've got
a twelve game schedule.

Speaker 5 (58:20):
We're now going to a nine game.

Speaker 6 (58:22):
SEC schedule, which we just made the most daunting schedule
in the country more difficult. You're looking at potentially seventeen
games to try to win a national championship with a
conference championship game and the playoffs, and so there's such
a fine line.

Speaker 5 (58:37):
You know, we didn't raise our scholarship numbers.

Speaker 6 (58:39):
We still only have eighty five scholarship players, but yet
we're requiring them to play more games, and more difficult games,
and more physical games with less of a break. When
you get into December, like you used to have a
month off, now you're playing every ten days, and so
it's requiring.

Speaker 5 (58:54):
More of the players.

Speaker 6 (58:56):
So on one note, you're like, man, we better preserve
them as best we can early in the season. But
on another note, our guys came here to play against
great competition. They love the competition, they love playing in
those big moments, in those big games against really quality people,
and so it's somewhat of a catch twenty two in essence.
But I would say, hey, I want our fans to

(59:19):
enjoy what we get to do too, And so the
reality of it is you're trying to find the right balance.
You know, can we hold our hang our hat and say, hey,
we're one of the few that doesn't play in FCS
school that's great and all, you know, but you can
play some really good SCS teams too, you know that
are high quality opponents and maybe a power for school
that isn't quite as good. So you don't know, year

(59:40):
in and year out, especially in this day and age
with the transfer portal, you know who hits it right.
You know, these guys have sixty five new players on
their roster from last year's team, and so you know
every year it's gonna look different. UTEP's had a bunch
of different new players on their defensive side of the ball.
So at the end of the day, I just think
we're trying to balance out our schedule so that we
can will some continuity grow as a team, develop as

(01:00:02):
a team, and get ourselves ready to play for a
daunting conference schedule.

Speaker 1 (01:00:06):
All right, there it is Long Horns head coach Steve Sarkis.
We'll hear more from start coming up next hour. We'll
be back to wrap up this hour here on thirteen
under the Zone. Glad to have you with us here
on this Monday afternoon, a Longhorns Monday here on the program,
Craig Way alongside the producer Jay Carmen.

Speaker 2 (01:00:22):
Glad to have you with us as well. And in
addition to the fact, and I mentioned.

Speaker 1 (01:00:29):
This earlier in the program, you always have the ability
and the option to text the program. If you want
to do that, all you have to do is text
the word text is followed by your question or comment
to eight one, five three zero.

Speaker 2 (01:00:46):
You can do it that way.

Speaker 1 (01:00:47):
The other thing we do have the talkback feature and
that's really easy to manage as well. All you do
is text excuse me. Download the free iHeartRadio app that
you do that, and then after you download the free

(01:01:09):
iHeartRadio app, you search AM thirteen under the zone. It'll
pop up there's a little red button with a white microphone,
and you push that button. You can leave us a
message up to thirty seconds to give us your feedback
on something. If you want to talk about Brian Kelly,
the LSU coach or some of the other stuff, that's
fine as well.

Speaker 2 (01:01:30):
Also also.

Speaker 1 (01:01:34):
We use that talk back feature to give away things prizes.
That's what we did with the Dave Campbell's Texas Football
Magazine giveaways, and we're doing the same thing with tickets
to see Alice Cooper and Judas Priest on October twenty
fifth at their Germania Insurance Amphitheater that's out there at CODA.

Speaker 2 (01:01:53):
And so this is how easy it is to do it.

Speaker 1 (01:01:58):
You enter to enter, you download the iHeartRadio app, like
we mentioned, if you haven't already done so, you search
AM thirteen under the zone, you tap that red button
with a white microphone, and then you leave us a
message with the keyword that you heard on this show,
So you'd say I was listening to Craig wayshow and
you're gonna give away tickets to Alice Cooper and Judas

(01:02:18):
Priest a keyword for today, Monday, September fifteenth. Today, the
keyword is no no as in no more mister nice
guy by Alice Cooper. I'm sure that's what that is. Yeah.

Speaker 3 (01:02:30):
They've all been nods to his greatest hits.

Speaker 1 (01:02:33):
Yeah, so I'm sure that's what it is. No as
in no more mister nice guy. So anyway, that's what
you do if you want to try to win tickets
for that. I left out one text that someone had
texted the program and said missed it. Who was the
ACC coach? Comments, y'all play? Well, it wasn't an ACC coach.

(01:02:54):
It was Brian Kelly of LSU getting after a reporter
who was uh and and as Cam Parker seventy he
was in here, he was he was impressed with the guy,
wouldn't back down to hit him first, what third downs?

Speaker 2 (01:03:07):
Running game? And it was going on.

Speaker 1 (01:03:10):
He had follow ups ready, he did and it brought
some some pretty direct and uh forceful commentary from Brian Kelly,
who then came back but today's news conference and apologized
for being just a little too over the top on that.
Man Sepal said, remember sarks for his first news conference

(01:03:33):
when he said winning is hard, you could almost hear
the groans and see the eyes rolling. That's because Tom
Herman had said it a lot. So I didn't know
that when he came. He just came and said, look,
you know, we're we're gonna come here, would be physical
to do this. He is winning is hard.

Speaker 2 (01:03:45):
I didn't. I didn't know.

Speaker 4 (01:03:46):
Someone already suggested the Craig Way GPS. But look, I mean, yeah, yeah, yeah, exactly.
Uh so, yeah, that happened.

Speaker 1 (01:03:55):
I mentioned about McDonald's and they're all time that the
oldest menu items, say, we had the first one went
back to nineteen forty was from you know Mac and
Mick Mac and Dick McDonald who were the original owners
of it and started it in California. And there is

(01:04:15):
still the original franchise McDonald's restaurant in down in California
is still there. It's the oldest one that's still there.
But anyway, that was the deal that some of these said,
oh it is our man. See Powe said in the
mid sixties, the first McDonald's in Austin was a Capital Plaza.

(01:04:35):
Our little league team went there after a game w
a treat back then yeah, I said, I'm I'm older
than Craig. It's funny to bring this all together. What
would tomorrow being the birthday? But I remember being a
member of the McDonald's Birthday Club and they would send
you this blue like birthday card thing and you could
get a free hamburger, French fries and a milkshake with that,

(01:04:58):
and we and we have one in where I grew
up in Greensboro, North.

Speaker 2 (01:05:01):
Carolina, And it wasn't as far maybe a couple of
miles from the house, and my.

Speaker 1 (01:05:05):
Dad took me up there right after I got mine,
you know, we went up there, and of course my
younger brother went with me too, and so my dad
was paying the freight on the other burgers, fries and
jakes and stuff.

Speaker 2 (01:05:14):
But it was cool.

Speaker 4 (01:05:15):
Has anyone ever suggested taking the Fast Food Junk Food
Update out on the road.

Speaker 3 (01:05:19):
I mean, there's opportunity there. I see dollars signs.

Speaker 1 (01:05:23):
Yeah, I see, you know, heart disease and you know,
and all those other kinds of things too that might
happen well, but yeah, we do the Fast Food Junk
Food Update during inconceivable as well as as well, so
anyway that catches us up on the text line, So
I want to do that.

Speaker 2 (01:05:41):
I wanted to hit a.

Speaker 1 (01:05:43):
Little more from Brian Schottenheimer, the Cowboys head coach, and
what a crazy win it was. But it was a
win nevertheless for the Cowboys yesterday and Brian Schottenheimer. He
was asked after we played the locker room celebration. Excitement there,
but he was asked, how did And by the way,

(01:06:03):
when we played that that locke, wasn't it Dak Prescott
presenting Coach Schottenheimer with a game ball?

Speaker 2 (01:06:08):
I think that was the first thing. And then he
went around and yeah, then did his big thing.

Speaker 4 (01:06:13):
That was the first few seconds you heard, and then
it was about ten seconds of cheering.

Speaker 2 (01:06:17):
Yeah, right exactly. Anyway, So then Shotty was asked, how
did getting that first win field?

Speaker 8 (01:06:23):
I was really good, uh coming off the field, and
then uh when uh Dak presented me. Uh, he and
Jerry presented me with the game ball. That was pretty
special for me. Cool way to win your first game.
You know, you'll remember it forever. But the words that
Dak and the player said to me after the game
is why it's so special. It's I expect the first

(01:06:45):
of many, but I'll remember this one forever because of
the fight of these guys, the way they didn't quit,
they just kept believing. You know, we always say give
yourself a chance in the fourth quarter. I guess we
had to go a little longer tonight, but we found
a way to do it. And uh, very very special,
but so proud of those young men.

Speaker 7 (01:07:01):
Man.

Speaker 8 (01:07:02):
You talk about pro football and the ups and downs
and the high lows and big giving up big bombs,
and then you got to go back out there and
some of the situational stuff we did was just incredible.
What can I say about Brandon Aubrey. I mean just
you know, four field goals fifty one, forty four, sixty four,
what would have been good from seventy and then the
walk off forty six yard kick. But yeah, so proud

(01:07:24):
of those young men, the hard work that they've done.
This is about them. This isn't about me, It's about them,
and I'm just so blessed to be their head coach.

Speaker 2 (01:07:31):
All right. So then he was asked, didn't you have
family in the stands to this one?

Speaker 8 (01:07:38):
So my family was up in the box. I was
blowing them a kiss. I was talking to my dad
as well, And how about this my mom on Friday afternoon,
went to the airport, fell in the airport, broke her arm. So, Mom,
I love you, I know you're watching. I know you're proud,
but kind of think she wasn't here for it, but
I know she she took one for the team and

(01:08:00):
she said, hey, I'll be all right, I'll take my
meds and be ready to go. Look at this guy.

Speaker 2 (01:08:05):
Yeah okay.

Speaker 1 (01:08:08):
Then he said that the whole week in fact, just
a real crazy week for his family.

Speaker 8 (01:08:12):
We've had a lot of things this week, and I
don't know how deep you guys want to go. I
had my dogs got bit by snakes. That was a
big vet Bill shout out to wherever we went. They
got not one, but two got bit by snakes. And
then my mom calls me on Friday afternoon when I'm
leaving the office and from the er she's got her
hand in traction from a compression fracture. So I figured

(01:08:34):
something had to flip into good because this has been
a crazy week. And but man, I just again, I'm
such a blessed man my family. But those guys in
the locker room and that is my family too, and
I love those guys and I'm.

Speaker 1 (01:08:47):
So proud of them, all right, So you knew there
were gonna be questions about how to fix some of
the defensive issues, especially highlighted by Mylik Neighbors massive game
for the Giants and the receiving department.

Speaker 8 (01:09:00):
You know, I want to look at it before I
make a bunch of comments, so I'll obviously have much
more comments tomorrow when we visit, but you know, I'll
say this. You know, Elite Neighbors the hell of the
player he really is. He's a great player. But again,
we had two guys there some and we weren't deep enough,
and you got to be deep enough, and we got
to communicate, and one time it's a guy should overlap,
another time it's a safety should be deeper. And we

(01:09:21):
knew whe they were going to come into this game
and try to get Moliite Neighbors the ball. He's a
special player. He was hot last week that he didn't
get it, so we weren't surprised by that. But we
have to be better. But at the end of the day,
we made enough plays as a football team to win
this game in the final minutes. And again I think, uh,
you know, that's that's what the story should be we

(01:09:41):
got a chance to fix things, and we need to
fix things, and whether we win or we lose, we're
gonna fix things. And uh, tomorrow's meeting will be a
long one. There's gonna be a lot of things to
fix on both sides of the ball, special teams and
certainly coaching.

Speaker 2 (01:09:53):
Yeah, all right.

Speaker 1 (01:09:54):
One thing that does not need fixing, apparently is his placekicker.
Brandon Aubrey is definitely a weapon. He's incredible, man, I
mean he really is. He's incredible and uh, just unshakable.
We see it every day from him. But I mean
those big kicks man, and you guys have a better
vanage point than I do.

Speaker 8 (01:10:10):
I kind of can tell whether they're going in or out,
but I think most of them are right dead's down
the center. And the operation was great too. I mean
just the protection part was great, the snap, the hold.
But yes, what a weapon. Yeah, for sure.

Speaker 1 (01:10:25):
When you have a crazy game like that, back and forth,
the momentum shifts the highst and lows. How is the
confidence affected, in the belief affected? When you have a
crazy game like that, you.

Speaker 8 (01:10:38):
Gotta believe, I mean you have to believe there's going
to be those plays, and there was a lot of
those plays today. But when you've got veteran players like
Dak Prescott, Ceedee Lamb, Terrence Steele on defense, Jack Sanborn, Canine,
you know, you know when you ohs, when you have
those guys, man, they just keep playing. And again the

(01:11:01):
defense got the big tourner over late, which gave us
a chance to win. Obviously, you guys all know the
overtime rules. What was it three minutes or something when
they took the ball back over, So they gave us
some time where we could be kind of very selective
and patient into field goal range. But you know, these
guys are confident and they should be confident. We're a
good football team.

Speaker 1 (01:11:19):
Now.

Speaker 8 (01:11:19):
I think we did some stupid tonight, you know, I
really do. And you know, a lot of penalties. You know,
I think they got us for twelve and then for fourteen,
So we got to look at that special team stuff
is unacceptable. We're not gonna let that happen. So we
got to look at those and we got to play
with better hands. But it speaks to the type of
culture we've built. And again, I know some people don't

(01:11:40):
like talking about culture, but that's what I'm all about
And I told you guys, when we had adversity, our
guys would step up, and they did.

Speaker 1 (01:11:47):
Okay, And one of the guys who stepped up and
who's in whose poise he is greatly impressed, would be
Dak Prescott.

Speaker 8 (01:11:56):
Yeah, I thought he played good. You know, I will
look at the film. I know he threw a ton
of completions. Aren't coming in thinking we're gonna have to
throw the ball that many times, But just the big
time throws he made. I mean the touchdown to George
late was incredible throw, and Ceed made incredible play into
double coverage. You know, they were trying to double Ceed
a bunch and uh for him to be able to
get open and do what he did, I thought, you know,
I thought Ferd played good, but I never, at one

(01:12:19):
moment felt like Dak was not playing well. But what
I will say is that is the most confident I've
seen him. I mean, he and I were having fun.
I mean we're starting overtime and I was like, hey,
you have any fun.

Speaker 6 (01:12:29):
Man.

Speaker 8 (01:12:30):
He's like, I love this and he said we're made
for this. I said, You're damn right, we are. So
I think it's that inner belief. That thing is the
relationship he and I have built that you know, when
you call good plays, he executes him. When I called
the plays, he's still excuses him. He's the first to
tell you how athletic he is. Now I say, you're
over thirty, so let's limit it. But again, it was
a hell of a play and I didn't know how
far he was going to go. H But the thing

(01:12:52):
that I loved is he hasn't forgotten how to slide.
That was cool. I think I'd give him an a
maybe a minus from the.

Speaker 2 (01:12:56):
Slash that was on the big run that say up
the game winning field goal.

Speaker 1 (01:13:01):
By the way, and people who know me know that
I love historical, freaky little nuggets that come out of games.
And I saw this a credit NBC. They're the ones
who's put it up there last night. Brandon Aubrey is
the first player in National Football League history.

Speaker 2 (01:13:20):
Now, it's.

Speaker 1 (01:13:24):
History is relative because overtime, it's only been around only
quote unquote been around fifty years, and.

Speaker 2 (01:13:29):
The league has been around one hundred and five years.
I think it is something like that.

Speaker 1 (01:13:35):
But Brandon Aubrey is the first player in National Football
League history to kick a field goal on the final
play of regulation zero zero zero, collect the force overtime,
then kick a walk off field goal at zero zero
zero at the end of overtime in the same game

(01:13:59):
as a Yeah, of all kickers, that does not surprise
me that he's the first. Yeah, he's the first one
to do that at NFL history.

Speaker 3 (01:14:05):
He wants something else, that's crazy.

Speaker 2 (01:14:06):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (01:14:07):
Since twenty fourteen, one in every five sixty yard field
goals are against the Giants, and all of them has
been as time expired in the fourth quarter.

Speaker 2 (01:14:20):
That is weird. That's funny. Giants don't think it's funny,
but it is funny.

Speaker 1 (01:14:25):
All Right, We're going to hear more from longmerre and
said coach Steve Sarkisian when we continue on thirteen under
the zone and a couple of in case you didn't
hear about it. Power five coaching moves made over the weekend.
Both moves made after the coaches of their teams had
had to suffer through oh to three starts.

Speaker 2 (01:14:43):
A one.

Speaker 1 (01:14:46):
UCLA fired to Sean Foster after I start oh for
three and I wondered about this. I wondered about this.
I'm not going to break my arm, pat myself on
the back for this. But because I know I'm not
alone in this, but there were a lot of people
who had I'm sure wondered as I did, was he
ready for that sort of thing? I mean, clearly the
answer appears to be no now, but it was like really,

(01:15:09):
I mean, you couldn't see that back then. The athletic
director Martin Jarman told reporters here. Listen to the quote
he said, I regret putting to Sean in that situation
where we were going into the Big ten and even
though we were supported from a resource perspective, getting a
start so late really disadvantaged the beginning.

Speaker 2 (01:15:28):
To his coaching career. Here. Yeah, I just I just
don't think he was ready for that anyway.

Speaker 1 (01:15:39):
Tim Skipper, who was the special assistant, is going to
be the interim head coach for the rest of the
season there, so it's a bad deal there. And then
the other thing is at Virginia Tech, and I know
that that probably were not a lot of folks that
were real surprised by that, because they're on in three,
sixteen and twenty four through four seasons under Brent cry

(01:16:04):
and they just got through getting beat at home by
Old Dominion forty five to twenty six, and the fans
are booing loudly. When they went to the locker room,
he took the iro said Blacksburg will always hold a
special place in our hearts. We leave with wonderful memories
and lifelong friendships, and we will forever be cheering for
the Hokies. The school president maybe the announced, but Tim

(01:16:26):
sand said the change was necessary due to on field
results described as not acceptable. So there were two Power
five openings that came up over the weekend. All right,
let's talk more about the Longhorns. Oh and by the way,
Billy Napier, the coach at Florida. Of course the long

(01:16:46):
Words will open SEC play at Florida. Of course they
lost LSU. But he thinks his team is and his
quote was close to being pretty dangerous. He said, it
didn't feel good. If I didn't feel good about the
intangibles of the team, I think that's probably when I
would be worried. But this group turned it around, showed up,
competed their tail off Saturday. They're a group that knows

(01:17:08):
they're that close. That's something similar what Sark was talking
about about. They know when they're close. A lot of
our guys are doing a heck of a job. We're
pretty close to being pretty dangerous in my opinion. All right,
so that was billion Nape. You're talking about that, and
they've got Miami this week at Miami, so that's not
going to be an easy go for them.

Speaker 2 (01:17:28):
All right. Let's move back to long Worns head coach
Steve Sarkisian.

Speaker 1 (01:17:33):
From the weekly news conference, and we brought it to
you live this morning at eleven thirty here on the Zone.
And here's some more from sark and talking about Grace
and Littleton and what really has set apart this true
freshman as both a starbucker safety because he's played both

(01:17:54):
early on.

Speaker 2 (01:17:55):
What has set him apart as a true freshman?

Speaker 6 (01:17:58):
Well, I think football is the most important thing in
his life. Like the guy got here, what mattered to
him was being a great player, learning the defense, you know,
understanding how to work in the weight room, getting in
in Michael Taff's hip pocket. How does this guy study?
How does he prepare? And that's really hard for freshmen.
It's the first time you're away from home. It's the

(01:18:20):
first time you're nobody's telling you when to go to
bed or when you're supposed to be home, and so
you know, with freedom can come tougher choices and decisions
to make. I think one thing Grace and Littleton has
done has put his head down and work and made
football the priority.

Speaker 5 (01:18:34):
And it shows.

Speaker 6 (01:18:34):
It shows in the way that he prepares every day
in practice. It shows the trust that he's earned, not
only from the defensive coaches, but from from Coach Banks
on special teams. I think it shows, and the respect
that he's earned from his teammates. But I think it's
all a byproduct of the mindset that this guy has
come in with.

Speaker 5 (01:18:53):
From day one.

Speaker 6 (01:18:53):
He's come into work and it wasn't about how many
stars or where he came from or what high school.

Speaker 5 (01:18:59):
It's been about, Hey, you know, we didn't recruit him
for three years.

Speaker 6 (01:19:03):
Maybe recruit the guy for like, you know, two and
a half months, maybe you know, and then he decided
to flip and come here. But he came in with
a with a workman like mentality, and it shows, you know,
it's paying off for him.

Speaker 2 (01:19:13):
Okay, all right. Next, he was asked about his pass
rush and what he's trying to get more from out
of his pass rush.

Speaker 6 (01:19:21):
It's tough you know, I think the ball came out
Saturday on average one point eight seconds. I mean that
he can only get so far with somebody in front
of you in one point eight seconds. It's just difficult,
you know. And and hey, you know, like we were
talking to the team today, like we've all got holes
in our game. We all got strengths in our game
as individuals, but we also have him as a team

(01:19:42):
on offense, defense, special teams, and so people are going
to try to attack the holes in our game, and
they're and they're going to try to not get exploited
by the strengths that we have in our game.

Speaker 5 (01:19:52):
And one of our strengths are edges.

Speaker 6 (01:19:54):
One of our strengths is our pass rush and the
multitude of ways that we can get to a quarterback.
And so we have to anticip pay what they're gonna
do to try to combat that, and part of that
is getting the ball out of their hands quickly. Part
of that might be moving the pocket some So we
got to remain discipline in our pass rush lanes. You know,
I felt like in San Jose State we probably missed
about three or four sacs, you know, quite frankly, and

(01:20:15):
that changes that number quickly, and so maybe it's not
how many opportunities you get to get the quarterback on
the ground, but making the most of the opportunities when
you do get them.

Speaker 5 (01:20:25):
And that's what we're trying to train our guys to do.

Speaker 1 (01:20:27):
Now, back on the offensive side, ask how Arch can
regain his confidence and his accuracy, because two kind of
go hand and had I feel.

Speaker 6 (01:20:34):
Good about the process that we're in right now. I
thought Arch had a great practice this morning. I think
so many times what happens is is you could start
to start looking at yourself, beating yourself up, focusing on yourself. Well,
it's already hard enough. The other team's already trying to
beat you up. The other teams are already trying to
knock you down. So let's not self inflict wounds onto ourself.

(01:20:56):
Let let's let's take some of that frustration and anger
out on them, right, Let's kind of, you know, go
after them rather than go after ourselves, and shift some
of the focus, shift some of the anger, shift some
of that frustration over there.

Speaker 5 (01:21:10):
And I think that he did that today.

Speaker 6 (01:21:11):
I thought he did a great job and came out
with a great kind of focus and energy about him,
that is what I'm accustomed to, and so I anticipate
he's going to, you know, write this ship quickly. And
that's a credit to the players and coaches around him
and helping him do that.

Speaker 1 (01:21:27):
Certainly was not lost on anybody that was there in
the stadium Saturday, were those watching on television that there
was booze for Arch and for the team, and Sark
was asked, what does that do?

Speaker 2 (01:21:41):
What does he make of all of that?

Speaker 1 (01:21:43):
And does he have a message to the fan base
who might be frustrated by only winning by seventeen and
not having the offense coining the way.

Speaker 2 (01:21:51):
They want it.

Speaker 7 (01:21:51):
Yeah.

Speaker 6 (01:21:52):
You know, at the end of the day, as I
said earlier, I think that we've set a standard around
here of the way we play football, and there's an
expectation from our fans about the way we play football.
It's fast, it's physical, it's tough, it's smart, it's exciting,
and at times we didn't play that way this weekend.
And and you know, I think at the end of
the day, they're they're spending money, you know, they're coming

(01:22:13):
to games, they're sitting in the heat. Uh, they want
to make sure we give them something to give them
a reason to be there, and and so that's not.

Speaker 5 (01:22:21):
The only reason we're all there.

Speaker 6 (01:22:23):
You know, we're obviously there for for as a team,
our own goals, our own aspirations, and what we're not
only trying to do on that Saturday, but for the
duration of this season, but also men, our fans offer
so much support to us that clearly, if if they
were booing about the way we were playing, just imagine
how we were feeling about the way we were playing

(01:22:43):
at some of that juncture in the first half. So understandable,
but again, you know, don't don't give up on us
too quick. I think we got a pretty good.

Speaker 2 (01:22:51):
Team, all right.

Speaker 1 (01:22:52):
And then he was asked about the third and fourth
down frustrations, especially they were two for five on fourth,
but the third down they went oh for the first
a before they hit eight of their last no hit
I believe it was five of their last eight third
down situation. Which was asked about those things.

Speaker 6 (01:23:10):
You know, what I felt about was early in the game,
I think we have a third and two, third and one.
We don't convert a third and two, we don't convert,
a third and four, we don't convert.

Speaker 5 (01:23:18):
Like those are the ones we got to have.

Speaker 6 (01:23:20):
You know, I'm okay with third and eight, nine, eleven, twelve,
like those ones are a little bit more difficult. But
we had some real makeable third downs that we didn't make,
and then I really felt great about the fourth downs
that we didn't make.

Speaker 5 (01:23:34):
And part of that might be some execution.

Speaker 6 (01:23:37):
Part of that might be, you know, somebody doing something
a little bit differently than we did it in practice,
which caused maybe somebody else to do something a little
bit differently. But we we have to remain aggressive, and
I think that's part of the standard that we've created
around here. We're in an attack orient a football team.
We're going to attack you on offense. We're gonna we're
gonna be aggressive on fourth down. We're an attack orient

(01:23:59):
and special team's unit. We're gonna try to block punts.
We're gonna try to create returns. We don't fair catch kickoffs,
you know. We we're trying to move the ball and
change field position. We're inn attack orienta defense. We've gone
nineteen straight games at DKR. We've created a turnover and
so that style of play is I think unique to us,
and I'm not gonna I'm not gonna shift our style

(01:24:21):
of play just because we've had a game or two
where it didn't go the way we need it to go.
We need to execute a little better, we need to
perform a little better. But our style of play is
something I think we've all grown accustomed to and a
style that is unique to us, and we're going to
remain aggressive. We're going to continue to attack our opponents.
We just got to gotta we gotta those ones that

(01:24:41):
are one, two, four, five, We got to have those,
you know, and and we got to make sure we
put a plan together our guys feel comfortable and confident
in executing.

Speaker 1 (01:24:48):
All right, we're gonna hear more from sark coming up
when we continue on thirteen under the Zone, Let's say
hear more from logrn's head coach Steve Sarksan talk about
the interior of that defensive line, because there's a lot
of new faces, including u new starters this year, and
how they've rotated in and continue to play well really interesting.

Speaker 13 (01:25:05):
You know.

Speaker 6 (01:25:05):
Over the last three years, you know, we went we
went three straight years with two defensive linemen drafted each year,
interior defensive linemen, and so there were so many familiar
faces right over the years and all the way ending
up last year with Vernon and Alfred who had been
with us the whole time, and all of a sudden
we get this influx of new faces. You know, it's

(01:25:26):
a ton of new faces outside of maybe Alex January,
who was just a freshman a year ago. And I
think getting those guys acclimated to not just the defense,
but our culture I think was part of it. And
you know, what we do defensively starts up front. You know,
there's a brand and style of football that we play,
and it starts at the line of scrimmage and killing
the run and affecting the quarterback. And that allows the

(01:25:49):
Anthony Hills and Leungla fouls and to Anthony Smith Smith
and Colin Simmons and all these guys to do all
the other stuff that we like to do because of
the way we play on.

Speaker 5 (01:25:58):
The interior defensive line.

Speaker 6 (01:26:00):
And so getting them acclimated not only, as I said,
to the defense, but to our culture and our style
of play, I think was really important. And then the
development of those guys in their time. They were all
in different phases and stages as we go, but we're
starting to see them all start to elevate. I thought
Travis Shaw probably had his best game Saturday through three games.

(01:26:20):
I think Marod Watson last week this week is starting
to grow. We know what Alex was early. He'll be
back here in a week and we'll get him back
going again. Colber Vard has been steady in there. We
need to get Levon Johnson going. I think he's on
the cusp ready to go. So we need all those bodies.
We know how physical the SEC is going to be.
I mean, as I told the team today, the war

(01:26:42):
is coming, right, the Wars a couple weeks out and
it's coming, and we need all the big bodies and
physical players on the inside of our defensive line to
be ready to go and to be playing at a
high level.

Speaker 5 (01:26:51):
So that's we keep pushing those guys.

Speaker 1 (01:26:53):
Towards all right, there's that, and then since we're doing
that with the defense, what about the development of the
new players on offense and get through some of those
growing pains that happen.

Speaker 6 (01:27:03):
I want us to be doing everything as consistently as possible,
as quickly as possible. You know, I think a little,
and you guys know me dot I don't make excuses
at all.

Speaker 5 (01:27:12):
Like that is not what we do.

Speaker 6 (01:27:14):
But I think not having a couple of our veterans
on offense consistently has affected.

Speaker 5 (01:27:19):
Kind of the flow of how we play.

Speaker 6 (01:27:22):
You know, you lose, you lose Trey Weisner, you lose
DeAndre Moore, then you lose Cedric Baxter. You know, like
those guys are the ones that have played some football
for us. You know, there's some new faces. I mean,
Parker Livingstone, this is like his third game he just played,
you know, Ryan understanding how to play now more snaps
than he's ever played in his career.

Speaker 5 (01:27:42):
What does that feel like?

Speaker 6 (01:27:43):
Everybody at tight ends new outside of DJ, everybody on
the old line essentially new, the quarterbacks new. So I'm
not naive to think we wouldn't have some growing pains.
I just want those growing pains to I want to
get tall as fast as we can and feel good
and start playing. And that's the race that we're in,
you know, And I'm comfortable in saying we're going to

(01:28:04):
get there. I just want to get there sooner rather
than later. I assume, like everybody else, right, we want
to see a well oiled machine offensively, on special teams,
on defense, playing our best football when our best is needed,
and so we got to get there as quickly as possible.

Speaker 2 (01:28:17):
Okay, all right.

Speaker 1 (01:28:18):
Next he was asked about the Logoarns going for it
quite a bit on fourth down early in the season,
even when in fueld goal range, and how much analytics
plays in all of this, I.

Speaker 6 (01:28:31):
Think part of what a lot of coaches are under now.
Analytics have become a big part of football. Like analytics
became part of Major League Baseball, Analytics became a big
part of football. And whether they started in college and
then went to the NFL or NFL to college, whoever
you want to look at it, everybody's got an analytical

(01:28:52):
approach to what they do.

Speaker 2 (01:28:54):
We do too.

Speaker 6 (01:28:55):
But I'll be honest with you, I haven't checked with
the book yet before I've made a decision. Now I've
gone back after and said, hey, what did the books
say on that?

Speaker 5 (01:29:05):
You know? And quite frankly, I've probably.

Speaker 6 (01:29:08):
Been a little more aggressive than what the book would
say when atalytics would say. Luckily, the two times that
I did go for it and the book said I
should probably kick it, we made it both times.

Speaker 5 (01:29:18):
So I feel a little better.

Speaker 6 (01:29:19):
I thought to myself, maybe I'm a little smarter than
the book, you know, because there's some gut instincts involved,
there's some trust in your team involved, there's some style
of the way the game is going that's involved, and
so it just so happens we've been put in those
situations early in games. You know, it feels like we
have more fourth down attempts earlier in the game than

(01:29:42):
we do later in the game. But that's just the
way the drives have gone and things have gone. But again,
like I told the team again this morning, you know,
I do that because that's who we are, Like, that's
our style of play, that's what we believe in. We've
got a great kicker, we've got a great punter, we've
got a great defense. We've got all those things, and

(01:30:02):
we're going to be a great offense too. Here and
then reason kicks in into the flow of the game
and what it looks like and how you're playing it
and where you're out on the field and what juncture
of the game. But you'd be surprised what analytics says
on a lot of those things. And there's some that
I punt the ball. Analytics is like this is like
you probably should go and I'm thinking that's crazy, you know,

(01:30:23):
but you know we're going to punt the ball here
or we're going to kick the field goal here. But
analytics takes in a lot. As I said, we have analytics,
but I kind of study the analytics before the game
and then I go with my gut in game of
what I think is the right play to make.

Speaker 2 (01:30:38):
All right, now, question a month about the wide receivers.

Speaker 1 (01:30:43):
It's good to see Ryan Wingo get back into the
rhythm and get his first receiving touch any call, two passes,
a couple of passes on Saturday as well. Parker Livingston
and we know has gotten off to a really good start.
But DeAndre Moore is banged up, he's out. Dylan McCutcheon,
or date A as his teammates call him, is in

(01:31:06):
the mix. Ryan Niblett is and we've seen the two youngsters,
the true freshman Collik Lockett and the red shirt freshman
Aaron Butler.

Speaker 2 (01:31:14):
In short, Sark was asked how all.

Speaker 1 (01:31:17):
These guys are doing together, how they're how they're getting along,
how they're mixing together and becoming more effective, and the
confidence of this wide receiver room as it continues to
meld in with the freshman.

Speaker 5 (01:31:29):
I think this is great experience for these guys.

Speaker 6 (01:31:31):
You know, I thought that you know, Nibblett stepped in
a lot for for DeAndre last week, but we incorporated
you know, Dayda Mitch McCutcheon a fair amount. And it's
unfortunately we had a breakdown and protection or he's going
to have a big time catch down the middle of
the field.

Speaker 5 (01:31:50):
And so they're close.

Speaker 6 (01:31:52):
You know, I think Calik Lockett has shown some real
progression here, and again, the flow of the game just
didn't offer an opportunity to get those guys in there more.
And that's what we're striving for. It's like these opportunities
I want to give them to these guys. They got
to keep trying to earn our trust throughout practice that
they can go out and perform and do the things

(01:32:12):
that they need to do in game. And there's learning
experiences in game that we have to as coaches understand.
They're not gonna be perfect. They're gonna make young guy mistakes,
and those young guy mistakes may, you know, hamper the
offense's rhythm at times. But I need them to fail
some so that they can grow. And that's part of

(01:32:33):
the evolution and the growth of an offense. That way,
I'm hopeful that I don't have to put three young
guys out there together that you can spot one or
two at a time and the other one or two
vets can kind of help that guy get situated. But
we're gonna need him, and we're gonna need him at
some point. So the more we can play them now,
the better it's gonna serve us, because we're probably gonna

(01:32:54):
need them in October, November, December, and hopefully into January.

Speaker 1 (01:32:57):
All right, And one more from Sark he brought up.
He said, you know, I'm not an excuse guy. I'm
not going to make excuses when things aren't going right offensively.
He did bring up the fact that maybe that rhythm's
been missing a little bit when you have key offensive
leaders off the field like Quen Trey Van Weisner and

(01:33:19):
now CJ. Baxter out there DeAndre Moore out as well,
in addition to the leaders that they are replacing.

Speaker 2 (01:33:28):
On the offensive front.

Speaker 1 (01:33:29):
So he was asked about that about how do you
you know when you're missing those kinds of players who
really steps up to be leaders for you football team.

Speaker 6 (01:33:38):
Well, I think leadership always starts with us as coaches,
you know, naturally. And we've got guys who now are
three games into their career. And so I think Trevor
Gooseby is a great leader. I think Arch is a
great leader naturally. I think Parker is a fantastic leader,
Ryan Wingo, you know. So we've got plenty of people there.
I think more importantly is as other players seizing the opportunities.

(01:34:00):
If those guys can't, can't go, you know. And I
thought for James Simon, I think, what do you have
seventeen carries Saturday? And I don't think he woke up
Saturday morning thinking I was gonna get seventeen carries today.
And so now that's the understanding of you don't know
when your number's cold, and seizing your opportunities when it
presents itself. Well, how do you seize that opportunity? You
practice really well on Monday, You prepare really well all week,

(01:34:23):
You practice well all week, and you put yourself in
position that if it's six reps, if it's ten, if
it's twenty, if it's thirty, you're prepared for the moment.
And so we'll see what we look like health wise
by Saturday but we're gonna we're gonna try to prep
all our guys be ready to go come Saturday night,
seven o'clock.

Speaker 2 (01:34:39):
All right, there it is.

Speaker 1 (01:34:40):
That's the stuff from log oorn's head coach Steve Sarkaschin.
We'll be back to wrap up today's edition the program
on thirteen hunder the Zone.
