Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hello, Monday afternoon. We're on to you, and we're on
to moving on to getting ready for the Texas log
Worns for the Oklahoma Suitors this Saturday. In the case
of the log Worns are on the moving on just for
no other reason to be moving on. Good afternoon, everybody.
Welcome to the program here on Sports Radio AM thirteen
(00:21):
under the Zone. My name is Craig Way. Thank you
very much for joining us. This being a log Worns Monday,
we will let you hear the comments from long Worns
head coach Steve Sarkisian. We bring you the news conference
live every Monday, and we did so again to this morning.
And for those of you who are unable to hear
(00:42):
it live, you'll get a chance to hear the comments
that they may coming up because we'll bring you bring
it to you in Q and a form coming up
here in just a few minutes, so we're happy to
do that. We of course includes the producer who's heavily
medicated this afternoon, Jay Herman, trying to fight through I
don't know any number of upper respiratory ailments, right, Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:06):
I always have a hard time kicking knees. This is
something that started last week and hopefully I didn't give
it to you before you went to Gainesville, but now
I'm on the antibiotics and ready to go, not missing
a day.
Speaker 1 (01:18):
Well, that's good. We appreciate that. Thanks, thanks for the
game efforts on that. We appreciate that. This afternoon on
the program, like I said, we'll let you hear from
Longhorn's head coach Steve Sarkisian. Also you'll hear from Dallas
Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer. You'll hear from Houston Texans
(01:38):
head coach Tamika Ryans. I mean, after all, how often
is it that you have both of those head coaches
speaking after the team's won and it happened on the
same day. Well, I'll tell you today is the first
time the season that you'll be hearing that, because yesterday
was the first time the season that both the Cowboys
and the Texans won on the same day on the
(02:01):
same weekend. Last week in a tie and a victory.
This first time for wins. So we'll hear from both
Dimiko Ryans and from Brian Schottenheimer during the ports because
you can hear both of their teams on our stations
here in the iHeartRadio family. You hear Texans football here
(02:23):
on Sports Radio AM thirteen under the Zone and Cowboys
you hear on ninety eight point one FMK that I've
listened to the second half of it, or really kind
of the fourth quarter of it driving home after flying
in from Gainesville, Florida yesterday.
Speaker 2 (02:36):
Well so you heard some garbage time. Cowboys made that
thing pretty easy.
Speaker 1 (02:40):
Yeah, and then and then made it a little more
interesting with some of that stuff, with the way the
defense is playing down the stretch of the fourth quarter.
Listening to Brad Sham and Babel Offenberg. Okay, well that
should have put this thing away, but here they come again.
Speaker 3 (02:53):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (02:53):
I never felt like it was in serious doubt after
Javonte Williams ripped that huge run.
Speaker 1 (02:58):
Right, Yeah, it was a big part of it. How's
your fantasy football team looking?
Speaker 2 (03:03):
Oh, it was a let's just call it an off
week for the team and move on because I got beaten.
I almost got doubled up this week. I was okay,
my opponent was outstanding.
Speaker 1 (03:13):
Yeah, yeah, I got to get seventeen points out of
Patrick Mahomes tonight, So okay, he hits the Jaguarts Jacks
D's been better this year. Yeah, yeah, yeah, so we'll see.
You know, I need seventeen points.
Speaker 2 (03:24):
You need Jacksonville to help you out with that to
keep my moms throwing.
Speaker 1 (03:27):
Yeah yeah, exactly. So well, we'll see how that goes, okay.
As always, we welcome your thoughts, your questions, your comments
on the text line. We're more than happy to take
those all the time from you. And the way you
do that simply is text the word Texas. That can
be with a capital T and then the little EXAs
(03:49):
if you want, or all caps doesn't matter, but you
text the word Texas followed by your question or comment
to eight one five three zero. So you text the
word Techs followed by your question or comment to eight
one five three zero. Standard messaging and data rates may apply.
So we're more than happy to hear from you your thoughts.
(04:13):
If you've got thoughts about the Longhorns of the Cowboys,
or the NFL, or the Texans, or the Major League
Baseball playoffs or whatever's on your mind, that's fine. We're
more than happy to take those questions and thoughts from
you as well. So a lot to get to, obviously,
with the loss to Florida, the log Worns have dropped
(04:35):
out of the AP Top twenty five, so they are
completely out of the poll. They're still in the coaches
pull at number nineteen, but dropped completely out of the
AP Top twenty five College Football poll, where there's still
some movement around. Ohio State is still number one in
(04:56):
both polls. Miami moved up a spot after taking down
Florida State. They're number two in the AP. Oregon remain
number two in the coaches. Oregon is three in the AP,
dropping down one spot. Miami remained number three in the coaches.
Ole Miss number four in both polls. Texas A and
m number five in both polls. The log Horns will
be facing the sixth ranked team in the nation when
(05:19):
they see the Oklahoma Sooners this Saturday. OU is number
six in both polls. Indiana seventh and both sets of rankings.
Alabama eighth in both polls. Texas Tech up to number
nine in the AP poll, Georgia's nine in the coaches.
Georgia will be ten in the AP and Texas Tech
number ten in the coaches. LSU eleven and both sets
of rankings. Tennessee twelfth in both polls, Georgia Tech thirteen
(05:43):
Missouri fourteen, Michigan fifteen, Notre Dame sixteen, Illinois seventeen. That's
in both polls. BYU is number eighteen in both polls.
Virginia is nineteen in the AP. Texas, as I mentioned,
nineteen in the coaches, Vanderbilt number twenty in both. Arizona
State twenty first in the AP, I Always State twenty
first in the coaches. Ioway state number twenty two in
(06:04):
the AP. Penn State, which remained in the coaches poll,
is number twenty two. PET state, like Texas, dropped out
of the AP rankings. Memphis makes its debut in the
AAP pole at number twenty three, Arizona State number twenty
three in the coaches, South Florida back in the poll
at number twenty four, Virginia number twenty four in the coaches.
(06:25):
In Florida State, which lost to Miami, dropped seven spots
and number twenty five in the AP, and Memphis number
twenty five in the coaches. By the way, if they
were ranking below twenty five, Texas would be twenty seventh
in the AP. So anyway, that's the updated college football rankings.
(06:50):
But as you'll hear from Steve Sarkeshan and as in
the coming days, as you'll hear from the players as well,
none of that stuff really matters right now, you know,
none of that. It doesn't really matter. It's about them
trying to get themselves right before they play a good
Oklahoma team on Saturday. On the text line, somebody said, hey,
(07:10):
just an armchair quarterback here. It's perfectly all right. There's
lots of those around so, but it seems like it
should have been rolled out more. He seemed more natural
and out of his own way. Well, he did roll
out some, but a lot of times it was by necessity,
no doubt about that. And the pressure was on him
(07:30):
on I think he was pressure twenty times and sacks
six times in the game, so it was tough for
him to really even have much time to throw. And
that's something you'll hear Sart talk about about how the
offensive line has got to play better. They've got to
be better, and the defense has to be This was
a game where all three faces came up short. On
(07:52):
the offensive side. The protection for arch manning and blocking
up front for the running game really struggled at times nonexistent,
and that was a big part of why the offense
struggled to get going on the defensive side, allowing a
long drive from Florida to open the football game. An
(08:12):
eighty four yard thirteen play drive to open the game
ending in a touchdown kind of set the tone for
a bad afternoon for the defense, which also allowed seven
out of fourteen conversions on third down. So there was
that and even special teams, which I had said, in fact,
they even said it on Long Orange game Day with
the guys prior to the game on Saturday that the
(08:36):
best individualized unit through the first four games really had
been special teams. Place Kicking had been perfect on field
goals and extra points. Punting had been really good with
Jack Bomeister and the returning in They had had many opportunities,
but they've been decent in it well. On Saturday. Didn't
(08:57):
have problem with the placement game that was still there,
but the punting wasn't where the team wanted it. A
Bomeister un courked a boomer. He was trying to get
it inside the ten, but it just went zoomed into
the end zone. It was sixty two yards, but you
only get forty two on the net. You lose twenty
yards on that because of the touchback and then to
(09:19):
others of his punts that could have been down inside
the ten and possibly even inside the five, and there
were players down there and they didn't get it. Stopped one.
To be fair, it took a really wicked balance. There's that,
and then the other one they just couldn't get a
good handle on it. Win the end zone. So that's
forty more yards in field position. You'll hear sorry talk
(09:41):
about that that there's sixty yards in field position lost there.
And then you know, like you said, on the defensive side,
the failures stopped the run and that's what just got
posted on our text line, run stopped the run. Win,
That's right. You know, there's no nothing too fancy about that.
You got to be able to run the ball and
(10:02):
you got to be able to stop the run. And
they were unable to do either of those things, and
that's what ultimately cost them. Two of the big factors
weren't the only ones, but those were two of the
big factors in the ball game, and the reason that
they could not get the victory.
Speaker 2 (10:15):
And Craig, you spoke about the pressure that Arch phased
after our texter asked about rolling him out fifty nine
and a half percent of his dropbacks were pressure. The
stat comes from David Ecker to The Statesman. That is
the highest rate faced by any SEC starting quarterback this season. Yeah,
second high, as was Lagway and their Miami loss.
Speaker 1 (10:34):
Yeah. Just hard to get it going when you have
that kind of heat on you, for sure. All Right,
So we're going to hear from Steve Sarkisian his thoughts
on the loss and how they have to get better
and what they have to do to get better. So
we'll hear from him again. We're more than receptive to
your questions on the text line, happy to take those
as well. We'll hear from Brian Shot. However, we do
(10:54):
have inconceivable, as inconceivable as it might have seemed to
some folks in Texas can play that way on Saturday,
it did happen. And yet here they were down eight
points of the ball at the Florida forty yard line
and twenty seconds to go there in the ballgame, and
still with a shot to try to get it in
the end zone for a touchdown and then go for
two to try to tie it. That didn't happen, though,
(11:15):
And we've got some really inconceivable things that happen, and
we'll run down those things as well. So glad to
have you with us on a Monday as we move
forward right here on Sports Radio AM thirteen under the
Zone and where you can always listen to us for
free on the IR Radio app Broll you Back with
the Little Beatles their day Tripper from nineteen sixty six
(11:36):
sixty five sixty six, right in that range when they
were making their transition in the musical industry. Here on
this Monday after Monday afternoon edition of the program here,
and like we said, we will always be more than
happy to take your thoughts, your questions, and your comments
(11:58):
on the text line as well. You text the word
Texas followed by your question or comment to eight one
five three zero. Somebody just said Texas A and M
or Texas Tech.
Speaker 4 (12:11):
And in terms of who would you like if they played.
Speaker 1 (12:15):
I don't know what they I don't I'm not sure
what that means. They're they're both ranked in the top
ten now Aggie's are five and Red Raiders are number nine,
and they're they're both playing well right now. Yeah, so
we'll keep an eye on both and see see how
it goes. From there. So I mean I said Vegas
as the raiders of the Lost Spark, but the Colts
have Indiana. Boy, do they ever.
Speaker 2 (12:37):
Raiders are the Lost Spark. That's a good NFL. Ryan
McGee bottom ten names.
Speaker 1 (12:42):
That it would be. They lost to the Colts has
a forty to six.
Speaker 2 (12:47):
They lost whatever Indianapolis wanted to six.
Speaker 1 (12:50):
Yeah, Jonathan Taylor three touchdowns, Daniel Jones was hot through
the air. So they look pretty good. They're they're four
and one right now. And then of course the other
headline Grammary Eagles losing for the first time. Then the
Bills last night losing to the Patriots. No unbeaten teams
left in the NFL.
Speaker 2 (13:09):
Except for well no commanders did lose one with Jayden Daniels.
But he made his triumphant return for my commanders yesterday.
Speaker 1 (13:16):
After he did he did, he did well. So and
like we said, the Cowboys and Texans both emerged victorious.
We'll hear from both of their head coaches later. Let's
hear from the Long Horns head coach here on this
Long Worns Monday. First of all, from the news conference,
which we brought you live and do every week here
on the program here's the opening comments from the head coach,
(13:39):
Steve's Sarkisian here, and we, of course we bring you
the new news conference live every Monday, beginning our coverage
at eleven am every Longhorns Monday here on the zone.
But here is the head coach, Steve Sarkisian.
Speaker 3 (13:51):
You know, we really when you look at it, it
was just not a very good start to the ballgame. Force,
you know, I think Florida scored the first three of
the four they had. Of the three scoring drives, I
think all three drives were ten plus plays in those drives,
so they really controlled the ball. They got themselves in
very manageable third downs. I think there were five for
(14:12):
six on third down in those drives, and so they
possessed the ball. And on the flip side, offensively, we
were not very good on third down in the first half,
and the majority of those third downs were third and
eleven plus. I think six of our eleven third downs
were third were third or nine plus, which is not
a winning form. In the first success that goes back
to line of scrimmage. I did not think that we
(14:34):
played well on either side of the ball. The line
of scrimmage in the game. We are more than capable
to perform better than that, and we're gonna need to
in this conference, regardless of the opponent, to be better,
to be better at the line of scrimmage that way.
You know, a couple of things that were to me
a little uncharacteristic that we're kind of frustrating, was, you know,
(14:54):
coming out in the first half of the game, I
thought we managed the crowd noise really well. And then
in the set and half, I think we have five
pre snap penalties that that that that you know, can
mount on you, especially when you get them in back
to back scenario. So we've got to we've got to
minimize the self inflicted wounds from an offensive perspective, and
then defensively, you know, giving up explosive plays and that
(15:16):
is something that we've really prided ourselves on, and we
did not do a great job of that. We gave up,
you know, two explosive pass plays. I think we gave
up five runs that were explosive runs.
Speaker 1 (15:26):
Uh.
Speaker 3 (15:26):
And so when you allow people to get yards in chunks,
you know that they can they can move down the
field quickly. So we've got to get back to playing
to that standard as well. You know, obviously, you know,
getting a pump blocked is not ideal. We're probably fortunate
that that wasn't a touchdown, that it was only a safety.
Uh and credit to the defense of holding them after that.
But but again, I thought on special teams we were
(15:47):
close to having some some really momentum changing plays and
controlling the vertical field position. You know, three times we
have an opportunity to pin them inside the ten, if
not inside the five. You know, twice we we don't
down the ball inside the five, and the other one
we kind of get a bad hop by Jack. You know,
it ends up being a sixty two yard punt that
goes into the end zone for a touchback. So you know,
(16:08):
you're trying to play the vertical field position game and
pin them deep. We are inability to do that. That
was a sixty yards right that essentially you give up
in touchbacks right there. That that we've got to improve upon.
But to me, one of the biggest storyline of the
game is a lot of scrimmage. You know, six sacks
to none. Their ability to run the ball. Our inability
to run the ball, I think created all of the
(16:29):
other opportunities in the game, created their explosive plays in
the past game allowed them to rush the rush the
quarterback on our end. But as I said Saturday, you know,
I really want to commend our players for their fight.
I thought in the second half our ability defensively, I
think the final four drives were three punts in an interception.
Speaker 5 (16:48):
Uh.
Speaker 3 (16:48):
The offense is ability to continue to fight down to
the final whistle. So that will never be questioned about
our team. We just need to play better. We need
to play better when we start the ball game, and
we will. And guitar guys, they they got back to
work today with the right mentality, the right right attitude
that they need to have. We got week two in
the SEC and it happens to be the All state
(17:09):
Red River rovaliy against a very good Oklahoma team, fantastic
defensive team. Coach Venables. You can see you know his
his you know his footprint, his handprint all over this defense.
Now in year three, he's recruited the players that fit
his style. The very active upfront, very athletic group, multitude
of pressures, multitude of coverages. I think they lead the
(17:31):
SEC in about everything first in scoring, defense first and
passing yards allowed, first in total first down defense first,
and passion pass efficiency defense first in net punt second
and rushing defense fifth and passing offense. So you can
go down the line about how great they're playing on
defense right now. So we've got a work cut out
for us. And then obviously offensively, you know, they've got
(17:52):
a dynamic play caller who stresses you with formations, with tempo.
The quarterback is a tremendous player, and they got two
really good wide outs, and so it's gonna be a
heck of a challenge for us. The goals to get
to one to know this week, you know, we got
to get back to one on one in conference play,
and it happens to be a heck of a challenge
and in my opinion, the best game in college football
in the regular season. This is a great rivalry to
(18:13):
be part of. Humbled and honored to be part of
this game. And then looking forward to the opportunity Saturday afternoon.
Speaker 1 (18:19):
All right, that's the opening statement from Sark. We'll get
to a couple other questions here. Remember but you said
somebody had a question on the other text line.
Speaker 2 (18:27):
Yeah, Remember, if you're with us on Facebook, YouTube or
x where we do stream the show every day you
can leave a comment, and Lavies said, let's keep it real.
Arch never played against any true five star Blue Chippers
into high school and that shows on his starting capabilities.
At best, he is a situational down super start.
Speaker 1 (18:50):
Well, I've heard other people make those kinds of claims.
If that were the case. However, why is it every
Division one program in the country wanted him. Every NFL
scout was in love with all the mechanics and the
tools and things like that. I don't, you know, I
think there's a lot more to it than that. That
(19:11):
may have something to do in some of that, But
if you're laying the blame for the loss at his feet,
I think you're off track here because and that's one
thing that yo, you're sark talk about them, and this
was about poor offensive line play, no running game as well. Yeah,
Archs made a couple of throws he definitely you heard
(19:33):
sarks they would like that back, and made some mistakes
on that. But he also made some plays when he
was running for his life out of there being sacked
six times. So I don't I don't think it would
be fair to lay at all, especially all for the
totality of the loss, given the struggles they had on
defense and special teams as well. But he comes in
(19:54):
for his share of the blame, you know, when when
he can't get the offense going. So that's going to
be a popular take that a lot of folks will
have to look back at the high school and say, well,
he didn't he didn't face five star caliber competition. You
know who else didn't face five star caliber competition? Cole McCoy.
He played two a football and he didn't face more
(20:18):
than one or two five stars in his entire career.
But it didn't keep him from becoming an outstanding quarterback.
So I don't I don't put as much stock into
all that stuff about who you saw in high school.
There's a lot of private school players. You know, I
am a g academy doesn't play that many great high
school programs. Hey O, they play other private school programs,
(20:38):
but they crank out a lot of great athletes and
a lot of great players. So I think it goes
beyond that. Uh that Listen, Sark will be the first
to tell you this. Levi's that that the the process
of player development really ramps up once the athlete gets
on campus and it's on them, the coaching staff and
(21:01):
training staff and all of that sort of thing, to
help him develop. And he has to do his part
as well, and they're all working in It's not for
lack of trying, for sure. Appreciate the text somebody asking
do you have changes coming on the offensive front?
Speaker 3 (21:20):
Got a coach better? Got to play better?
Speaker 1 (21:22):
Okay, it wasn't a long sound bite, but the only
part you miss was is it just got to play better.
It's plain and simple. Got to coach better, got to
play better. Okay. Somebody else asked him. Here's one of
those hindsight twenty twenty questions. Did he make the right
decision and not pursuing more offensive line help in the
portal before the season began.
Speaker 3 (21:41):
I think inevitably you can play the hypothetical in the
what if you know, it's what's available and then what
you have, And you know, I think our guys that
we have are more than capable. Like I said, we
got to coach better and we got to play better.
Speaker 1 (21:54):
Okay, all right, So then there's the thing about left
guard reps there how that gets determined and in dealing
with silent accounts, did they have to h did he
feel that that was more in need to do in
the second half when the noise level increased.
Speaker 3 (22:12):
Obviously, practice determines a lot of who who plays, you know,
who do we feel is is ready to perform and
then the flow of the game. You know that. I
didn't think Nick Brooks was going to go out there
and play perfect games first time he's ever played in
a real game at left guard. But I think there's
there's there's traits in there, and there's ability in there,
and the growth and practice in there that I think
(22:34):
he's got a very bright future for us. There was
gonna be growing pains and and we obviously lived through
some of those Saturday, but I do think he's got
a bright future. We definitely have the silent count. We
did not think it was needed at all. Like I said,
we clapped all first half long, and we were fine.
I thought we got a little antsy with them making
(22:55):
some calls to shift their defensive line that right before
we were snapping the ball. That that caused us to
be a little bit jittery. So we got to have
a little bit more poison composure at the line of scrimmage.
Speaker 1 (23:06):
All right, and one more from start before the break
and this is about uh, you know that he said
he commended his team for the fight they showed in
the second half to try to climb back in, And
so he was asked the other side of it, was
he surprised and what did he not see in terms
of im having enough fight from his team in the
first half.
Speaker 3 (23:26):
That's that's always the age old you know, challenge as
a coach. You know, you think you push all the
right buttons all week. Nothing indicated to me that that
we weren't going to come out and play really good
From the first play. We have an opportunity to seize
all the momentum in the game. You know, it's a
great hit by Grace and Littleton the balls on the ground,
(23:48):
and I'm not saying that would have changed the whole
outcome of the game, but man, we recover a fumble
right there on the you know whatever, it is thirty
or so yard line going in maybe a different game.
So you have to seize moments in games. You have
to seize opportunities. And I thought we had some and
we had opportunities to seize some moments and we didn't capitalize.
You know, we we have a we have a shot
(24:09):
played am at Moseley. We just miss. You know, protection
is a little leaky. We have a double pass we
just miss. You know, we have a fumble on the
ground we don't recover, and so, you know, and really
good teams play on the road. You got to capitalize
on opportunities when we're there, and we just didn't. But
but again, like I said, the line of scrimmage was
probably the more frustrating thing, and I take responsibility for
(24:32):
that because again I felt really good about it going
into the game. It just didn't. It just didn't come
to fruition the way I had envisioned it. And so
we've got to get back to the drawing board to
make sure we're ready to go.
Speaker 1 (24:42):
All right. We'll hear more from Sar coming up both
next hour and in the four o'clock hours. We're going
second hour of the program here on Sports Radio AM
thirteen under the Zone here on a Monday afternoon, a
log worns Monday. Glan to have you with us, Gland,
to have your feedback. As always, we encourage that you
have only to reach out to us. A couple of
ways you can do it. You can do like we
(25:04):
have been doing in the first home of the program.
Several folks have reached out via the text line, and
we're happy to take your questions. On our text line.
You text the word Texas followed by your question or
comment to eight one five to three zero. So text
the word Texas via capital T, capital e x as
(25:26):
if you want to just T and then lower xis Texas,
follow by your question of comment to eight one five
three zero. Standard messaging and data rates being applied. That's
one way. The other way is to reach us via
our talkback feature. That's the talkback microphone. Little microphone there
that you access via the iHeartRadio apps. If you don't
(25:46):
al really have the iHeart Radio app, you downloaded on
your smartphone really easy. It's free, and then you just
search AM thirteen under the zone. It pops right up,
and then you'll see two buttons. One is a little
white triangular shape button that's to listen to what's going
on the ear. Then there's a red button with a
little white microphone in it. That's the talkback mic. You
(26:07):
hit that button and you can leave us a message
up to thirty seconds. You want to talk about the
Texas game, that's fine, or the Cowboys and the Texans.
That's fine too, or whatever else is the baseball playoffs
crank up again today and tonight. Whatever is on your
mind with that, you know we can we'll get to
that as well, and you can leave us a thirty
second voice message on the talkback feature and we'll play
(26:29):
it on the air. Just keep it clean. We try
to be a family oriented program here, so anyway, two
ways to reach us, the text line and the talkback feature.
And by the way, the talkback feature, you're going to
need to know that one. You're going to need that
talkback feature to reach us. If you want to try
(26:52):
to win tickets to things like a four pack of
tickets to see the Texas Stars this weekend, we'll give
you details on that coming up and a chance for
you to win on that. So we'll do a little
bit more on that in the three o'clock hour. All
baseball playoffs continue. We're going to hear more from logrn's
head coach Steve Sarkisen in a few minutes. The Major
(27:12):
League baseball playoffs continue this afternoon and tonight in the
National League. Games one and two have been played. In
the American League Division Series, the Toronto Blue Jays have
just basically pummeled the New York Yankees in the first
two games at Rogers Center in Toronto. They won eleven
to one, they won thirteen to seven, got out to
(27:36):
huge leads in both and didn't look back. So they've
scored or I guess ten to one and thirteen so
so they've scored twenty three runs in the two ball
games and the Jays are up two games. And I
remember the division series is a best of five, meaning
you win three and you move on to the league
championship series. So Toronto's one went away from moving on
(27:58):
to the ALCS. The series does shift to New York
to be in the Bronx tomorrow night as the Jays
go for a sweep of the Yankees. Won't be easy.
The Yanks a will be in their home ballpark and
be the left Carlos Rodino on the Mountain tomorrow night.
So that's one of the division series in the American League.
The other one has been really entertaining Detroit in Seattle.
(28:21):
The first two games at Tea Mobile Park Saturday night,
when eleven innings the Tigers came up with a win
three to two, and then last night in Seattle. Julio Rodriguez,
who's having himself a whale of a series, had what
proved to be the game winning hit in the bottom
of the eights, a double, an RBI to score the
big Dumper cow rally. And also they got two home
(28:47):
runs in the ball Who is the home runs again
for the Mariners?
Speaker 4 (28:52):
Was it Julio last night?
Speaker 1 (28:54):
No, Julio got the double. He had a two run
ober on Saturday night, two solo homers last and it
gave him a two to nothing late before the Tigers
came back to tie it.
Speaker 2 (29:04):
Horey Polanco. Yeah, had a great little renaissance season for them.
Speaker 1 (29:07):
Yeah, yeah, yes, and added to it with two solo
homers last night. But after Detroit tide it. It was
Rodriguez double that scored what proved to be the game
winning run and the Mariners took Game two, So that
series is a game apiece. It was the first home
playoff win for the Mariners in twenty four years. Yeah,
(29:32):
two thousand and one, the last time.
Speaker 2 (29:34):
And we had Garrett Green join the show on Friday,
the voice of the Sugarland Space Cowboys, and he talked
about how important those first two games were for Seattle.
He predicted they had to win both in order to
win this series, just because of the way Detroit's pitching
figures to look the rest of the way. I'm not
sure he counted on them beating Trek Scuobel in Game two.
Speaker 1 (29:53):
Yeah, And so that series is tied to the game apiece.
So today is a travel day for the American League,
and so they're traveling. So they pick up tomorrow with
games in Detroit and New York and again Tigers and Mariners.
Even in the game apiece. Blue Jay's up two games
to now on the Yankees. In the National League, the
(30:14):
Milwaukee Brewers, the one seed, hammered the Chicago Cubs in
Game one, and so they played Game two of that
series tonight in Milwaukee. And the other series is the
Phillies and the Dodgers, and the Phillies looked to be
in command and control of it, even though Shoe a Otani,
(30:35):
who started for the Dodgers, gave up three runs in
the second and he really settled down after that, but
it was the Phillies bullpen that ended up letting them down. Now,
Key k Hernandez got a big hit off Christopher Sanchez,
and that got two runs home to pull the Dodgers
to within a run in the sixth, but it was
against the Phillies bullpen. In the seventh day, Oscar and
(30:55):
Ands hit a three run homer. And then the Dodgers
have revamped that bullpen, which really struggled in the months
of August. In September they had Tyler Glass now come
out of the pen.
Speaker 4 (31:06):
Oh he was great.
Speaker 1 (31:07):
Yeah, as at the starter, and he is still the
schedule starter for a game four if there's a game four.
But he retired he got five outs. Then Alex Vessi
had got a big fly ball out to get out
of the eighth inning. And then man, they have found
their closer. Whether Dave Roberts wants to say he's the closer,
not Roki Sasaki, as he emerged as the guy and
(31:29):
he got the save. It was the first time in
Major League Baseball history that the starting pitcher and the
closer in a win were both Japanese born. Wow, first time.
Now the Red Sox had a combo, but it was
out of the pin as a middlewarl Leiver and the
closer back in twenty thirteen. But I think Kajiue Harra
(31:51):
was one of those guys. But it's the first time
that the starter and choey Otani went six innings and
wound up getting the win for the Dodgers because he
was the pitcher of record when they took the lead
in the top of the seventh and Rookie Sasaki got
the Say so tonight game two or this afternoon, actually
it starts a couple hours from now in Philadelphia, Game
two of that, and Blake stell Is going back to
(32:13):
the mound for the Dodgers, and afternoon.
Speaker 2 (32:15):
Lan Hayes, who's Lozardo for the Phillies, Joeyotani and most
of the Dodger lineup excited to see somebody besides Christopher Sanchez.
Speaker 1 (32:22):
Yeah, yeah, no question about that. So anyway, that's where
the baseball playoffs stand right now, in the American League
and National League Division Series, and again those are all
best of five when you get to the final four,
if you will, the American League Championship Series and the
National League Championship Series, those are both best of seven,
and of course the World Series is the best of
seven as well. So that's where it is right now.
(32:44):
All right, coming up, we'll hear more from long Horn's
head coach Steve Sarkisian will take more of your questions
as well off the tax line, so you can give
us a chat on that. And yeah, we're gonna give
away some Texas Stars tickets, so hang with us here
on a long Horns Monday on sports Radio Am THREDI
see under the Zone in the irt radio app. It's
funny that Jake the producer is rolling back with the
stone so a street fighting man, because Mike Hardball hard
(33:09):
and I were talking about this this morning. You know,
there's a lot of people that are uncomfortable with the
term the labeling red River rivalry. Start said it pretty good.
He rolled through it pretty quickly. But I understand it
if you go a little too fast or play a
little fast and loosha with the words, you can wind
(33:30):
up Elmer fudding it. You know, went with a lot
of we can wed with a wivalry if you're not
careful on that. And I understand they don't want to
go with shootout or whatever. I thought showdown was okay,
but people didn't like that, so they've gone back to
Red River Rivalry. And uh, I remember the first time
(33:51):
and this was probably it's been twelve thirteen years ago
when I was here the first time, a friend, Rod Babers,
and I were doing a show together in the after
noon here on the zone and it was right at
the time that they switched from Red River Shootout to
Red River Rivalry and it was and it was really
mixing up some people the first time around in Rod said,
(34:11):
we got to come up with another name, and I said,
we bounced around a couple names and said about the
State Fair Street Fight, and he loved that, and he's
called it State firstree go. So then so I heard
Hard say that's warningson. I know where you got that.
You got that from Rod Babers, You got it from me.
We asked about that State Fair Street. I just tossed
it out there. Lead back to who knows. But anyway,
(34:35):
the log words are getting ready for this red River Rivalry,
state Fair Street Fight, whatever you want to call it.
And uh, we'll hear more from Sark here momentarily on
the text line, Well, first of all, somebody said it's
National Coach's Day. Shout out to every coach passed and
president for your time, effort and influence. Couldn't agree more,
(34:56):
and and coaches at all levels, you know, pro football coaches,
college coaches, high school coaches, middle school youth football, baseball, basketball, whatever,
there was a coach made a difference in your life.
That's an important thing. In the Texas High School Coach Association,
they recognize those coaches who make a difference. They have
(35:18):
a Coach makes a Difference award, and they also, you know,
their slogan, their motto is helping coaches help kids. And
I think that's good but so good. Yeah, today is
National Coaches Day. Tomorrow's National Taco Day. Hey, maybe take
a coach out for tacos Tomorrow's I don't know.
Speaker 4 (35:36):
Maybe call that a crossover.
Speaker 1 (35:38):
Yeah, you could. You could do some of that.
Speaker 4 (35:41):
What's the National Producer Day?
Speaker 1 (35:43):
Is there such a thing.
Speaker 4 (35:45):
I don't know.
Speaker 1 (35:45):
Maybe there should be. Somebody said, I'm in bizarro world.
After this week, North Texas could big if be ranked
over Texas. I root for both teams, North Texas, Texas
State and previously UTSA proved you can use the portal
to your advantage. But nil guarantees the rich stay rich?
(36:06):
Should there be an nil cap? Okay? Well, a couple
of things. The reason why he's saying that about North Texas,
the mean green or unbeaten and they host South Florida
Friday night blackout right yeah, yeah, they're doing a blackout
in Debton there, uh and that'll that'll be at that
Q Stadium as it's called down And I've had several
(36:28):
people I say, hey, you're gonna go to the game Friday,
And since you're gonna be up there for I can't.
I've got a high school game Friday night. I'll be calling,
so I won't be I won't be able to be
there for it. But it'll be interesting to see if
they do win regardless. I would think this, if Texas
beats Oklahoma, they're going to be back in the rankings
and would probably be ahead of North Texas. Even if
(36:48):
North Texas beats South Florida to stay unbeaten, probably Texas
jumps back up at them. They're ahead of them in
the others receiving boats category anyway, So.
Speaker 2 (36:58):
No question is when they jump back out of Oklahoma. Right, Well,
it would take a long fall. I think some of
that depends on how the game goes, you know, so
we'll see, we'll see how that is. And he said
North Texas Texas state and previously utsa prove you can
use the portal to your vantage, but NaIO guarantees a
rich state rich. Yeah, there's a couple of things keep
(37:19):
in mind. UTSA lost players to the portal, Texas State
lost their placekicker to Texas through the portal, or Texas
lost players through the portal. North Texas also garnered players
from Sam Houston off the defensive side through the portal.
Should there be an nil cap? Should there be?
Speaker 1 (37:37):
I think folks can argue that either way, but I
can tell you there probably won't be, because the minute
you have that, you're going to have lawsuits from representatives
of the student athletes saying that you're restricting the right
to earn the wage that they rightfully command. That's going
to be their perspective on that. Just I don't think
(37:57):
there will be an nil cap. If there is, it'll
be capped in a way to where it's incentivized whatever,
where you can hit threshold or something. But I don't
know that you can just throw a cap on top
of the genies out of the bottle, or at least
right now anyway. So we'll see if it goes from there.
All right, let's go back to hearing from Longhorn's head
coach Steve Sarkishin asked about the offensive struggles, the inexperience
(38:23):
of the players they have versus the preparation that goes
in from the coaches and things of that nature.
Speaker 3 (38:28):
Probably a combination of things. You know, we've had moments.
You know, I heard about for the first two or
three weeks, was about the passing game, and we kind
of gotten that somewhat fixed and gotten guys healthy, and
guys have found a rhythm, and now we're under the
run game, and now we're talking about pass protection and
so again, you know, I think ultimately you try to
(38:48):
find the best rhythm in an offense. And you know,
when you focus on put so much attention on one
thing and then you neglect another, then that can become
an issue too. And so we've got to focus on
all of it. Whether it's a player who hasn't played
too much, whether it's the scheme of what we're calling,
whether it's about the player's preparation and getting themselves prepared
(39:08):
to play. Maybe it's a veteran player that's trying to
do too much rather than just doing his job. And
so there's a variety of things that can play a
part into that. But I think first and foremost for us,
it's it's it's executing on first and second down, regardless
of what we're calling, whether it's a run game, pass game, RPO,
whatever that looks like, because we've got to put ourselves
in more manageable third downs. And you know, it doesn't
(39:32):
matter what league you're in, from from Little league to
the NFL, when when you play third and nine plus football,
the percentages over time tell you your odds of converting a
first down go down dramatically. And so we've got to
do a better job of putting ourselves in manageable third
down situations. And so everybody plays a part in that, myself,
(39:53):
the our coaches, the play calling, to our execution on
first and second down to minimize eliminating some of the
self inflicted wounds and penalties. So all of that adds
up to we have got we've got to get ourselves
into more third and two to third and six type
third downs, and those they're just the nutting percentages go
up that you're gonna.
Speaker 1 (40:12):
Convert to that point that start just made uh. And
I said this on the air the other day that
I had a statistician when I worked in Dallas. I
was doing high school football, and he used to present
to me a stat like at halftime and then postgame
(40:34):
or whatever, and the stat was average yards needed on
third down. I like that. So if you're needing six
point eight or even higher seven point five and then
on up from there, like Sart just said, nine yards
or more on that, you're in trouble. You're not getting
the job done on first and second down. And that's
(40:54):
what Sart just spoke to. They've got to do a
better job on first and second down to give them
manageable third situations so that average yards needed on third
down will be in the manageable are area. This game
coming up this week always carries its extra special buzz
about it. We know that it always has that. And
(41:19):
with the buzz comes the noise, and so there's a
lot of outside noise whether your team is playing well
or not playing well. This will be a buzzy kind
of week with the Long Orange trying to respond and
to turn things around. So Sark was asked, how does
he eliminate or limit the outside noise that can permeate
(41:39):
a college football program in a week like this.
Speaker 3 (41:42):
The good part is this is year number five for
us of being part of this game, and this is
a great game. Like there's nothing about this game that
is like. I love all aspects of it. I love
it that it's neutral side. I love that it's in Dallas.
I love that it's a state fair. I love that
both teams are in the same tunnel. I love that
the crowd is split fifty to fifty. I love that
so many of our players have family coming. I don't
(42:04):
love that there's some noise around how we're playing, but
that's the reality of the situation. That's that's what we
signed up to do. All that being said, we got
to focus on us and we need to be enamored
with what we need to do from a preparation standpoint,
an execution standpoint, a game plan standpoint, being intentional with
our practice habits, things of that nature. And so, you know,
(42:25):
you lean into some of the veteran players who have
been through this week before, who know what this week
is about, and push your younger players or your new
players that maybe have transferred in into this is how
we go about our business. Because it is a great game.
There's a lot of emotion that goes into this game
and I think that there's a fine line and as
we've touched on, you know, playing with emotion but not emotional.
(42:47):
When you get emotional, that's when some of the penalties
and things can occur, which we've had some in the
past go against us. We've had some that went our way,
and so we've got to learn from those things along
the way. We gotta we got to coach our players
up on how to handle it Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday,
Friday and Saturday when that balls kicked off until the
final whistle, because there's a lot of emotion. There's there's
(43:09):
big plays, there's trick plays, there's you know, I think
nine of the last eleven games in this game have
been one score games, and so you know, I think
that the two that weren't were last year and a
couple of years ago. On our end, so we got
to prepare for a four quarter game, maybe a five
quarter game with overtime, and so that that takes preparation,
and that takes focusing on what we need to do.
Speaker 1 (43:31):
Well. Speaking of preparation, peteq wick Kowski's defense has to prepare,
certainly for an Oklahoma offense that could have either of
two quarterbacks now, John Matier just had surgery on the
thumb recently. And after the game, after the winner for
(43:53):
Kent State or is there called in the bottom ten
state of Kent Kent State on Saturday, Brent Bevinnables, their
head coach, said he was not trying to remember the
words exactly, not counting on having John Mattier available. That
(44:14):
mean he's out. And obviously there's the SEC student athlete
availability report that we'll see on Wednesday night and then
it'll be updated on Thursday and then an hour and
a half before the game on Saturday, And he said
he was not anticipating. And of course Michael Hawkins Junior
played in their win over Kenn State on Saturday. Hawkins
was a guy that long words, defended pretty well last
year in a thirty four to thirty Texas victory. So
(44:37):
Sark was asked who does he think he'll see a
quarterback for Oklahoma and is there a different mode of
preparation depending on who the quarterback is who takes the
snaps going out there?
Speaker 3 (44:48):
That's probably not a question for me, fight for Brent,
you know, I don't know. Hey, we'll plan from a
tier you have to. He's a dynamic player. He's the
heartbeat of that offen for sure. Everything goes through him.
We played against Hawkins last year. He's a much improved player.
Like most young players, they get better over time. You
(45:08):
can see his improvement for sure. But coach Arbuckle's got
a great scheme. We got to prepare for the scheme.
He's a fantastic coach. They tax you a lot of
different ways, varying tempos, formations, you know, trick plays, quarterback runs,
shot plays, and so we've got to prepare for the
offense as much it is. We need to prepare for
(45:29):
the quarterback, which one it's going to be, So it's
more about the offense in our in our world.
Speaker 1 (45:33):
We've had a lot of conversation here in the first
hour and a half of the program about the Texas offense,
namely the running game and not being able to get
the running game going against Florida. It was pointing out
to Sark that no running back has a carry of
longer than fourteen yards this season and that Arch Manning
(45:56):
is the Longhorns leading rusher. Why is that? How do
how do you fix that? Is it all offensive line?
Is it running backs? How does how does that get
turned around when you're talking about what's going on with
a running game.
Speaker 3 (46:11):
It's not working, that's for sure. That's what's going on.
You know, not to to put it as simple as that,
it just hasn't hit. And you know we've we've been
rollo decks and running backs. I think that's a little
bit of an issue. You know a lot of times
when you when you have a runner, which traditionally for
us we've kind of got that lead runner and then
a second runner. The lead runner starts to find a
(46:33):
rhythm with the timing of the blockers, and and and
we don't have that right now. And we got a
fight to get there as fast as we can because
I do think there's something to be said about a
runner getting carries. And I know you guys have been
mad at me before. Why is one guy get all
the carries and then there's a number two guy. Well,
there's a reason for that. I think there's there's rhythm
(46:53):
and timing into running the ball. Now. Do we need
a block better, yes, Do we need a game plan
better or yes? Do we need to break more, break
more tackles? Yes? All those things add up to we
don't have a run by running back to over eighteen yards.
We've been spotty from from a consistency standpoint in the
(47:13):
run game, and that's what we're fighting for, you know.
And so it's easy just to put our hands in
there and say we can't run it and let's go
throw it every down. I just don't believe in that
that that's not who we are. So we're going to
continue to work at this thing. Hopefully we're better on Saturday.
We'll find out.
Speaker 1 (47:29):
Okay, And let's let's hear another one from Sark talking
about not having Malik Mohammed on the field. It was
pretty obvious to those of us there in the stadium
and calling the game that clearly Florida, once Mohammad was
not available, was targeting whoever was filling that spot, whether
(47:52):
it was Kobe Black or Kate Phillips, Grayson Littleton, whoever
was taking the spot at corner on that side of
the field, that's were they were sending. Dallas Wilson, the
talented freshman receiver, by the way, earn SEC Freshmen of
the Week honors as he was over one hundred receiving
yards in the game. So it's a pretty obvious question
(48:13):
about how hurt the Long Orange were by not having
Malik Muhammed on the field. And how does a commensate
start for not having Malik on the field when he's
not able to go.
Speaker 3 (48:25):
Obviously, that was a it was a major loss. You know,
you're losing an All American player caliber player at corner.
You know, you try to compensate with with utilizing some
split safety stuff to take some of the stress off
the corners. I credit Florida. They got us out of
the split safety stuff because they were running the ball
so well. And then you got to go to post high.
(48:46):
You got to play a little bit more in man coverage,
and they got some dynamic receivers, you know, and they
hurt us twice on on deep balls, one for a
big post down the middle of the field and one
for the the go ball down the sidelines. And so
that's the fine line if he can't go of managing
that and KNOWU has the capability to do those same
(49:06):
types of things, and so we've got to we've got
to play better up front to help the corners on
the perimeter. We'll find out if he can go Saturday.
You know, we don't know yet. He's working his tail
off to try to get back. We'll see what happens.
Speaker 1 (49:19):
Okay, all right there it is before the break, we
got an offering on the text line from our man
CB the Savant, who said, happy birthday to your former
colleague Roderick Brabiers. It is today is Rod's birthday. I
know exactly how old he is. He's twenty years younger
than me. You do the math anyway. Also, seven years ago,
(49:41):
the greatest kicker in NFL history secured his place in
Red River Shootout of history. Dick her the kicker kick
the game winning field goal to beat Ou. That he did,
and so far he's been the highest percentage a field
goal kicker he has been in the NFL. All right,
up next, speaking the NFL, Well here from Demico Ryans,
(50:01):
the head coach of the Houston Texans, who now won
back to back ball games. That's next when we continue
on thirteen under the zone and some of my own
texts lines say, if Mohammed was all American after he
was burned the last two year's teams picked on him,
he must have improved. I guess are you and not
talking about the same elite Mohammad he was eating at
burn last year. He was an All American his first year,
(50:23):
he did have some growing pains. Go back and take
a closer looker, he was really really solid for them
on the opposite side, preseason All Conference and preseason All
American as well. Based on what he did last year,
he had a really good season last year. He did
have some learning experiences. I'll say that his freshman campaign.
(50:47):
So you are correct in that response. Let's hear from
Dimico Ryans. The Texans just went out and just ran
all over the Baltimore Ravens, and Ravens looked like a
completely different team without Lamar Jackson. But they've got a
lot of injuries as well. But when Cooper Russians your quarterback,
you're gonna struggle a little bit. And they struggled on
both sides, and the Texans won handily in that game.
(51:10):
First of all, here's here's what Ryan's had to say
to the team in the locker room.
Speaker 6 (51:17):
So we talked about making history, first time in his
organization's history. All right, to come up here in Baltimore
and get to win, I'll standing up.
Speaker 3 (51:30):
It is the first time in the organization's history. The
person here to count our own.
Speaker 2 (51:35):
It's giving out king balls that one that cowty there
the owner.
Speaker 6 (51:41):
And then when I talked about the keys, the victory
rights as a team. All right, we talked about offense
dominated first down eight point five yards. Third down.
Speaker 7 (51:52):
You guys are.
Speaker 4 (51:53):
Seven to twelve on third down, right, c J four touchdown?
Speaker 1 (51:59):
How standing?
Speaker 7 (52:00):
I'm not, said till man.
Speaker 4 (52:02):
We got hounts two.
Speaker 1 (52:09):
To ketches.
Speaker 4 (52:14):
And jaylen no will gets you KINDI far bardon.
Speaker 6 (52:23):
I ain't close it out. Defense. We talked about taking
three take me.
Speaker 1 (52:33):
Gas it off it.
Speaker 6 (52:37):
Hey, love you guys, hey, wait to come out and dominate.
Speaker 3 (52:41):
We just get started.
Speaker 6 (52:42):
We just get started. Love where our team is right, love,
everybody working executed. That's what it looked like. We do
it the right way. Man, I'll stand a job by everybody.
Let's hop on his bird to get to the.
Speaker 1 (52:52):
House's hop on this bird and get to the house
that they have. All right, Let's hear from Ryan's from
the post came press conference. He was talking about CJ.
Stroud and the offense having the success spreading the ball around.
Speaker 7 (53:05):
Yeah, offensively, I thought our offensive line did a really
nice job of protecting. CJ had a lot of time
in the pocket to make those decisions and make the
good throws that he made, so really proud of those guys,
and also running the football like we were able to
run for over what one hundred and sixty yards? For
us to run the ball that way, it's a credit
to our offensive line. It all starts there, tight ends, receivers,
(53:27):
everybody getting involved in blocking and staying with it. And
our backs did another great job again this.
Speaker 1 (53:33):
Week and certainly was pleased with a job that offense
score diator Nick Kayley has been doing, saying it's a
great job staying the course after the difficult and three start,
Kayley's done a.
Speaker 7 (53:43):
Great job and it didn't show the first weeks. And
because we didn't execute well, we came out today and
guys executed.
Speaker 8 (53:52):
We run our offense the right way, we run our defense.
Speaker 7 (53:55):
Our special teams, you know, when we do it the
right way, it's what we're capable of doing. We just
have to stay the course, everybody and continue to get
better as coaches, as players, everybody, and we're all in
this together. We're all growing, we're all getting better as
the season continues to go along.
Speaker 1 (54:09):
So now the Texan says a momentum. They went back
to back games, they've got momentum, and they go into
a bye week, So how about the momentum and carrying
that into the open data on the schedule.
Speaker 3 (54:19):
And you always want to go in and buy week
with the win.
Speaker 8 (54:22):
It's much better when you roll in with the win.
Speaker 7 (54:24):
And we'll get a chance to take a breather here, reset,
and I want our guys to feel like where we
are as a team over the past two weeks, like
remember that feeling. Remember what it feels like and not
the outcome. You got to remember that process, like how
do we work to get here? How was your week
of practice? How was your week of preparation? Like that's
where our guys have done an outstanding job these past
(54:47):
two weeks, and when we come back on the next week,
I expect the same thing. So I'm proud of the
guys for how they prepare and how they work throughout
the week.
Speaker 3 (54:55):
The results will take care of themselves, all right.
Speaker 1 (54:57):
And then being able to turn the page here and
talk about that historic win for the Texans, finally able
to win in Baltimore and turning it around coming off
last year's lost to the Ravens.
Speaker 3 (55:07):
That game last year is hard, hard one to watch.
Speaker 7 (55:10):
I had to go back and watch it and had
to face it, like we did not play well enough,
did not stop the run, and so we did not
score enough points. We didn't do anything well on that game,
and it was a It was a disappointing game for
how we showed up. But you can't dwell on that.
It was different teams, new year, new season, Like just
(55:31):
about us and this year, this team and how do
we prepare, how do we get better, how we come
out and finish the game. And that's so it stuck
out of me the most, like how everybody did what
they needed to do. And that's what I'm proud of.
That's what's going to continue to propel us for.
Speaker 1 (55:45):
And how about a couple from CJ. Stroud, the quarterback.
First of all, Stroud is gonna want to talk about
the offensive line, Grateful for the play from rookie left
tackle ariantaees Sury and the rest of that old life.
Speaker 5 (56:01):
I think it's you know, Tay has done a great
job first and foremost, you know, he's his mentality, you know,
his effort, he's God, he has God given talent and
it just takes you know, some plays and like I've
told you before. It takes failure sometimes, and I wouldn't
say he's had like failure moments he had everybody has
all like one play here, one play there. But I
(56:23):
thought he's done a great job of just weatherland storm,
staying committed, staying you know, rooted in what he believes in,
and that's himself. And I'm just super grateful that you know,
he's on our team. He's he's gonna be a great
player in his league. And then the rest of our
line does does a great job. I thought our plan
today was great. I thought Cole and Kel's and Jerry Draw,
you know, a whole offensive staff did a great job,
(56:43):
you know with the plan. And then you know, Titus
is You've been huge. Man. He's playing at a h
I think at the all pro level, pro Bowl level,
and he's you know, look looks great. He's holding down
the right our center. You know, Jake is doing great.
I think you know, all of them doing really get it.
Speaker 1 (57:00):
Looks great.
Speaker 5 (57:01):
Juices filled in and done a good job. So I'm
going on with all those guys. Man, I'm really proud
of him, and we're thinking to grow.
Speaker 1 (57:07):
When your team scores forty four points and you're responsible
for four scores, You're gonna get a lot of questions
and a lot of accolades. And yet Straud will continue
to tell you any success he's having, any success the
running backs, the receivers are having. It all start with
those big uglies up front.
Speaker 5 (57:22):
Yeah, you know, our our all lineman did a great job,
and that's where it starts. You know, I think I'm
one of the best. You know, when I get the
time and I can deal it out. I mean, I
all lined it amazing this game. And when that happens,
you know, Kel's are calling a great game and our
receivers running really good outs. We've been getting better at
of practice every week and I think that's where where
(57:43):
you know, you see the growth. But yeah, it really
starts with them.
Speaker 1 (57:46):
Okay, all right, So there's some from the Texans who
go into the bye week, the open date, coming off
of back to back wins. Now, yeah, they're just two
and three after the after the difficult start, but they
do have some momentum. Right before we break, I mentioned
we're gonna do this. We're gonna give away a four
pack of tickets to see Texas Stars hockey at home
(58:07):
at the AHB Center and Cedar Park this Saturday. And
I also mentioned at the start of the program that
the way you're gonna have to do this is through
the talkback feature the talkback microphone. They're on the iHeartRadio app.
So this is what you do. It's real easy, it
doesn't cost anything to do it. But this is how
we separate the week from the chaff. So what you're
(58:30):
gonna do is you would download the free and easy
to download iHeartRadio app if you don't already have it
downloaded on your phone, then you search AM thirteen under
the zone. It'll pop up, and we suggest go ahead
and make it a preset for you because that'll help
you circumvent some of the yellow traffic when folks are
trying to get through and do that. So you download
(58:52):
the iHeartRadio app, you search AM thirteen under the zone,
go ahead and make it a preset. Then then leave
us a message on the talkback It's that little red
button with the white microphone on. You push that and
you can leave us up to a thirty second message,
but you won't even need that long. All you have
to do is tell us what the keyword today is.
The keyword easy enough Star Star, that's the keyword. So again,
(59:18):
download the iHeartRadio app if you don't already have it
downloaded on your smartphone. Search AM thirteen under the zone,
press that little microphone on the talkback feature and leave
us the keyword to be eligible to win a drawing
for four pack of tickets to Texas Stars Hockey on
Saturday night, the keyword being star. All right, we'll be
(59:39):
back to wrap up hour number two year on thirteen
under the Zone, third and final hour of the program
here on Sports Radio AM thirteen in the zone. Craig
Way with you. Glad to have you with us as well.
We'll hear more from Long Worn's head coach, Steve Sarkeys,
and this is a Long Worns Monday, and we'll hear
more from Start coming up a little bit later on
(59:59):
this hour. And we'll hear coming up here in just
a moment from Brian Shot. I'm the head coach of
the Cowboys, with the Cowboys coming off a win which
had come following a tie, so back to back non
losing games just as the Texas and back to back
winning games, a tie followed by a win for the Cowboys.
(01:00:21):
We'll hear from him coming up, and like I said,
we'll also hear from Longhorn's head coach Steve Sarkisian coming
up here in a few minutes tomorrow on the program,
we'll hear from Arch Manning and his thoughts on the
game last Saturday and getting ready for Oklahoma. We will
(01:00:42):
visit I'll have it. We'll have our regular weekly Tuesday
conversation with Greg Tepper, the editor in chief of Dave
Campbells Texas Football Magazine. That'll be in the three o'clock
hour to talk college in high school football in the
state of Texas. And we'll visit with Toby Rowland, play
by play voice of the Oklahoma Sooners tomorrow coming up
on tomorrow's program. Okay, now to the Cowboys and Dallas
(01:01:07):
coming off, you know, pretty much handled your business kind
of thing, even for a team that went into it
one two and one against a winless Jets team. They
win thirty seven to twenty one. So the Cowboys with
that victory now level five hundred, two to two and one,
and they have the Carolina Panthers coming up in Charlotte
(01:01:28):
this week, so now drawing even at five hundred. Schottenheimer
was asked and the post game availability, how badly did
his team need a game like this?
Speaker 9 (01:01:38):
You know, we talk about all the time, you don't
win the game in the first quarter, second quarter. You know,
we knew this game was going to come down to
the fourth quarter. We knew they'd make a run. It's
a good football team, they're talented. Their defense made some
really good adjustments. But man, I'm just so proud. I mean,
imagine going in with four brand new offensive linemen, receivers
that are still learning and growing. Ryan Flornoy, you say
(01:02:00):
about him, how great he played, and the defense man
what they did to justin fields today. He's an incredible
competitor because he's got to be sore because we hit
him a bunch. We pressed him all over the place.
But again, we talked about all the time, you know, Calvin,
im it's all about winning, and uh, we found a
way to win. But there's going to be a lot
to correct, a lot to fix, and that's what we
do as coaches.
Speaker 1 (01:02:22):
So that was the start of it. Anyway, you know,
nice to get to win, a lot to do, a
lot to fix as well. Next up for shotting was
asked about Maris le U fouls a fumble the force
fumble they're late in the first half. Did it symbolized
what his defense it's supposed to be about.
Speaker 8 (01:02:42):
Yeah, I think so.
Speaker 1 (01:02:43):
You know.
Speaker 8 (01:02:43):
I mean we've been pretty good.
Speaker 9 (01:02:44):
At compromary football last couple of days or the last
couple of weeks, you know, sudden change we call it,
and I think we were pretty close to one hundred
percent today. But yeah, incredible play and I thought the
defense played physical. Man, thought Maris did that.
Speaker 8 (01:02:56):
You know.
Speaker 9 (01:02:56):
The pass rush was incredible, you know because I was
sitting there working on calls and I look up and
see see Justin, you know, on his back or running
for his life, and you know, great energy.
Speaker 1 (01:03:07):
Man.
Speaker 8 (01:03:08):
Our guys expected to win this game.
Speaker 9 (01:03:09):
They expected to play well, and I think that's important
and that's what we're trying to build.
Speaker 1 (01:03:13):
Got I have that expectation winning as well as the
skill level and the execution to do it. They've had
to overcome some injuries along the way, and his overcoming
injuries to win a testament to the players or the coaches.
Speaker 8 (01:03:29):
It's not a testament to the coaches.
Speaker 9 (01:03:30):
It's testament to the players the brotherhood that they believe.
Speaker 8 (01:03:33):
In the next man up mentality.
Speaker 9 (01:03:36):
I can't honestly say though, So I don't remember ever
having to go on with four brand new offensive linemen.
But again, I think it goes down to their belief
in one another. I want to see the film, but
I thought, really, you know, I thought Nate did some
really good things.
Speaker 8 (01:03:50):
It's very very talented young man.
Speaker 9 (01:03:52):
As we know, you know, a little rotation going there,
left guard trying to get you know, Hakeem and Trevor
in there. But what you could say about TJ Bass
last couple of games, and but that was a it
was a little unique for sure, going in with that deal.
Speaker 1 (01:04:07):
You could also say quite a bit about Dak Prescott.
He was eighteen or twenty nine, two hundred and thirty
seven yards, four touchdowns, no interceptions as well, And so
Schottenheimer was asked, you know, with regard to Dak's performance,
what was it that he saw that he could really
say about what Dak Prescott did.
Speaker 8 (01:04:30):
I think we're spoiled, you know.
Speaker 9 (01:04:31):
I think he's one of the best players in the league,
and he's certainly one of the best teammates and leaders
I've ever been around. The guys believe in him. He's
playing with a ton of confidence, right now. You know,
that's why you can do some of the things that
we do, you know, in terms of staying aggressive. And
you know, I thought the big the game changed late
in the second quarter, right when we had to turnover
(01:04:53):
and we went and got points, and then we got
the three and out and we were able to go
and Javonta had the huge run.
Speaker 8 (01:04:58):
But like that's a little thing.
Speaker 9 (01:05:00):
Javonte knows he cannot get tackled in bounds, so he's
trying to score. But you saw him kind of veer
to the left saying, okay, if I can't get here,
I got to get out of bounce because of the
situation on the clock. And then of course a very
similar call to the two point play where we jumped
off sides, we snuck Fergie back across.
Speaker 1 (01:05:15):
So so there you go with that other stuff from
Brian Schottenheimer, the Cowboys head coach. In the wake of
their win over the Jets, he had four new linemen
at one point I heard Biglthenburg talking about that on
the offensive room. Four new linemen. Did it change anything
(01:05:36):
with regard to his game plan?
Speaker 9 (01:05:38):
No, I would say, you know, we went in with
a plan. We did struggle to run the ball early.
It's a good front man. Williams is an incredible player.
Thought he played very well. Their backers are downhill. Takes
a while to settle in. About the big run before
the end of the first half was huge for us,
But no, not really. I mean, we knew it'd be
tough inside all day and Aaron and Steve Wilks love
(01:06:01):
to load the box and that's what they did, so,
you know, we just kind of tried to stay with it.
I probably got away from it a little bit, you know,
in third quarter, I guess.
Speaker 8 (01:06:12):
And it was nice to be able to finish that way.
Speaker 1 (01:06:14):
He also had the lengthy drives And what does it
say about having ninety yard plus drives say about offensive efficiency?
Speaker 9 (01:06:23):
Well, we don't necessarily want to do that. We'd like
to have ninety yard touchdowns. If we could do that,
we'll take those. I guess we probably need to go
draw some of those up because we don't have enough
of them in the offense. Just the belief, you know, again,
these guys love playing football together. They believe in one another.
We expect to play well. We don't always, but again,
(01:06:43):
I think you know, team football man, NFL football sixty
minute game, and you know, we needed to We needed
that last drive because the defense was tired, because we
were really to start the second half on offense and
that's my fault.
Speaker 8 (01:06:56):
But man, that couple drives they put together late.
Speaker 9 (01:06:59):
The big touchdown to George, what a great catch, and
then the last touchdown to Javonte was huge.
Speaker 1 (01:07:05):
Shatygill drop an as bomb.
Speaker 2 (01:07:07):
Every now he keeps us on our toes, he does,
He'll he'll throw one of those in there every now
and then.
Speaker 1 (01:07:14):
He was also asked what it was like coming off
the field having personally coached with the Jets in that stadium.
Speaker 9 (01:07:20):
I don't even think about that, and be honest with you,
I really don't. I'm a live in the moment guy.
Saw some really you know, dear friends on the Jets,
you know, Sideline, Bobby Mastrode, security guard. So great to
see Curse Martin before the game. You know, guys like that.
These are guys that you know, man, I bled with,
you know, and but I'm all I'm a live in
the moment guy. And again, it was special to be
(01:07:44):
in that locker room and celebrate with those guys. And
really there's a lot of things to celebrate. There'll be
a lot of things to clean up. But man, the
effort and play style on both sides of the ball
and special teams I thought was terrific.
Speaker 1 (01:07:56):
So now it brings to mind. You know, what do
you say to the team after they got it in
the bag? Now they got the wins, So what's next?
Speaker 9 (01:08:04):
The power of all about the ball? You know, it's
two weeks in a row. Now we've won the turnover battle.
We want to know this week and I took care
of it again, got a goose egg for the second week.
Speaker 8 (01:08:12):
I think that's huge.
Speaker 9 (01:08:14):
But we talked a lot about the complimentary football, you know,
and the defense, you know, getting stops, and.
Speaker 8 (01:08:18):
Again we didn't get as many out.
Speaker 9 (01:08:20):
But I'm telling you, we watch a film, there's gonna
be you guys should do the math because I'm not
going to give you the numbers, but how many punches
we had on the ball. I'm not going to give
you guys numbers, but there was gonna be a lot
of them. They were they were they were serious about
and intentional about trying to.
Speaker 1 (01:08:32):
Get that ball out all right. Next, he was asked
about the impact of scoring twice just before the first
half in and that's back to back games. The Cowboys
have done that well.
Speaker 9 (01:08:42):
Momentum, you know, it's huge part of it. You know,
we practice, you know, the game management stuff. I think,
you know, to the question earlier about Dak that's one
of the great things about having a veteran quarterback. There's
nothing that he can't handle, so it's easy to communicate
him with him about those things. You know, we have
words that we describe situations, which kind of takes the
guesswork out of it.
Speaker 8 (01:09:03):
So we might call something blue.
Speaker 9 (01:09:06):
We don't, but we might call it blue, and that
tells him the mindset he's in about the ball's got
to get out of bounds or the ball's got to
go in the end zone or whatever it is.
Speaker 8 (01:09:12):
And I think that that helps.
Speaker 9 (01:09:14):
But he's a big part of our ability to manage
those situations so well.
Speaker 1 (01:09:20):
Next, Schottenheimer asked about this team's pass rush and has
he noticed the difference in what they did in that
game against the Jets from some other games where they
really struggle with the pass rush. I noticed it.
Speaker 9 (01:09:34):
I think, you know, there was definitely some more pressure.
We were bringing more five man pressures. But Dante Fowler
I thought He was incredible today. You know the speed
and agility that he had, But it was just it
was multiple guys. I mean, and when you hit a quarterback,
especially in athletic quarterback like Justin, and you keep them
in the pocket and you don't let them. You know,
we let Brice Hall get a couple of runs on us.
(01:09:54):
We got to look at that. But I thought the
pass rush was so disruptive. And from having played the
posi and coach the quarterbacks forever, man, it's hard when
you're getting getting hit like that because it does affect you.
Speaker 1 (01:10:06):
Ryan Filloy had a big day for the Cowboys, and
he wasn't exactly a guy that was at the top
of everybody's list as players to watch this season. Did
he have a sense that this guy was coming on?
Speaker 8 (01:10:18):
No?
Speaker 1 (01:10:19):
Uh?
Speaker 8 (01:10:19):
And I love Flow, I really do.
Speaker 9 (01:10:21):
You talk about one of the most selfless people you'll
ever be around.
Speaker 8 (01:10:24):
All he ever does is work.
Speaker 9 (01:10:27):
But I have seen flashes of that in practice. But
you know, we knew Sauce was gonna match GP. We
knew that was going to be a big battle. I
wish GP would have got out of there. They made
us throw a side of Justin. He almost got out
of it, but so happy for Flow. I mean, this
guy has been through so much and he's worked his
way up the depth chart and played special teams and
(01:10:48):
then was waiting for an opportunity.
Speaker 3 (01:10:49):
And you know, that's that's what you get excited about.
Speaker 9 (01:10:51):
Like when we go watch the film of Nate Thomas,
Ryan Florin or guys like that that get thrown into
the mix and then they have success.
Speaker 8 (01:10:57):
It's so important because they can build on that.
Speaker 1 (01:10:59):
So what does this win show that? Or does this
win show that they were able to build on a tie?
The fact nobody liked the fact that it wound up
being a tie with Green Bay, but they did get
a tie. So does this victory show they were able
to take it and step forward with it?
Speaker 8 (01:11:16):
Yeah?
Speaker 9 (01:11:16):
You know, I still don't know how to handle the tie,
but yes, I mean, we always play to win, We
always expect to win. We obviously haven't won all of
our games, but I do think this was a good
building moment for our football team. It was great to
see the defense have the flashes. You know, we played
We played pretty soft late protecting the leads, so they
got some yards on us late. And I think Shamar
(01:11:37):
James had fifteen tackles. They were checking it down, but again,
watch the amount of guys running to the football tackling
when Justin was checking it down in late in a
fourth quarter of a game. Like that's when you know
you're made of the right stuff. And this football team's
made of the right stuff. And that's why we're gonna
win a lot of games.
Speaker 1 (01:11:54):
All right. And one more from Brian Schottenneimer. Again, this
was after the game yesterday. We'll hear some more from
him from that news conference that he has the end
week news conference. We'll here's some of that tomorrow. But anyway,
he was asked about defensive improvement, because improvement wasn't necessarily
a word you would use to describe what happened in
(01:12:15):
the game of Green Bay. But he was asked about
defensive improvement and to what does he attribute that.
Speaker 9 (01:12:20):
I would say it starts with the coaches. You know,
Maddie Ebrifleues a hell of a defensive coach. He and
his staff made some changes. I thought some of the
changes that we made were good. You know, we mixed
it up. I thought he called a really good game.
But it all starts with the ability to win up front.
You know, if you can win the line of scrimmage,
which I thought we did certainly in the passing game,
that's a huge part of it. So it starts with
(01:12:41):
the guys up front and when you can affect the
quarterback and then we obviously were able to get a lead,
which which helped. It gives you a chance, and uh,
just proud of the whole defense. You know, they've they've
taken their their bruises and they've come out on the
other side. Got to do it again next week. This
is one game midnight will still applies.
Speaker 1 (01:13:01):
You know.
Speaker 9 (01:13:01):
We won this game and it still applies. Last week
we tied, still applies. And as soon as I get
out of here, I'm to have a shot. He get
on the plane and get back to Dallas.
Speaker 1 (01:13:10):
All right, So there you are. That's from Ryan Shottam
and now they try to build on that next week
when they take on the Carolina Panthers in Charlotte up next.
More from log Worns head coach Steve Sarkegean when we
continue on this long Orangs Monday on thirteen, Under the
Zone went back to the text line this text I'm
impressed with Archie is humble nature. I hope it can
(01:13:30):
turn into leadership. He does have that, and his teammates
would tell you that he is a leader, but you know,
until you obviously see it affect its way in terms
of big numbers and or wins on the field, then
it might be more difficult to see it. But his
teammates do admire and respect him. And we heard a
(01:13:54):
comment I think, and we'll hear it tomorrow from Trey
Wisner about that about how he's their riot or die
and that you know they are committed to him and
that he is indeed a leader of this football team.
We'll hear more about that from his teammates tomar as
well as from Arch Banning himself tomorrow on the program.
(01:14:15):
All right, back we go to hearing from the Longhorns
head coach. This again followed our news conference coverage that
we brought to you today, and that of course, the
news conference comes to you live every Monday at eleven am.
(01:14:38):
Our coverage begins and then Sark begins to speak at
eleven thirty. So now some more for the preparation for
the Oklahoma Sooners. And he was asked about Oklahoma strides
on defense, where they'd had some struggles and this year
they have one of the nation's best defenses. So why
does he think Oklahoma's made those big strides defense?
Speaker 3 (01:15:00):
Like well, I think some players have grown up for him,
you know, you know when when you look at him
on defense, like our Mason Thomas, kip Lewis, Jaden Jackson,
Dom Williams. I mean, these guys have been playing there,
but you're seeing them getting better. You know, you can
see the improvement in these guys and in their front
(01:15:21):
get better and better, Kobe McKenzie and so and then
they've been in the system and I think that they've
they're earning more and more trust from coach Venables. He's
calling it really aggressively. The back end is playing sound,
but at the end of the day, the balls having
to come out so quickly because they're you know, defeating
(01:15:41):
the run and and they're getting to the quarterback and
and and he's putting pressure on the quarterback. And they
haven't been really hurt. You know, Auburn heard him a
couple of times. That's been about it all year, and
so I just think they're playing fast, they're playing confident,
they're playing physical, and that's what good defenses do. But
I think it's been the growth and development of a
lot of those players that have been in the program
(01:16:01):
two and three year now is in the system.
Speaker 1 (01:16:03):
He was also able to see Arch banding under a
lot of duress.
Speaker 3 (01:16:08):
There.
Speaker 1 (01:16:08):
There's a lot of pressure on him, the sacks, the
constant pressures on him. So what did he see from
Arch having to deal with all that?
Speaker 3 (01:16:15):
Found out he's a tough dude. He fought his ass
off Saturday and those were not ideal conditions for a
quarterback to perform under. Is there a couple throws I'm
sure he'd love to have back, of course, but he
stood in there and he showed a lot of contact, courage,
taking hits, delivering the ball. There was some really impressive
(01:16:36):
throws in there, and he battled until the very end.
And so I think he learned a lot about himself
as much as we learned about him. You know that
this guy's got a lot of courage, He's got a
lot of toughness. I think he gained a lot of
respect from his teammates Saturday, which is a great thing.
Does he need to play a little better, sure, Do
we need to play a better around him, No question,
you know, and so that that's the goal for us.
(01:16:58):
On that front.
Speaker 1 (01:17:01):
There's a lot, as started pointing out in his opening
statement and in answering questions during this particular press conference,
a lot that needs repair, fixing, adjusting, reworking all of
that with the offense, with the defense, with special teams
before the Oklahoma game. So the question is can all
of these fixes be made by Saturday? And would that
(01:17:26):
be involve a lot of changes in practice?
Speaker 3 (01:17:29):
Yeah, I feel very confident in our ability to do that. Unfortunately,
we've been down this road before. You know, as a coach,
you'd love to say you play perfect every Saturday. There's
always things to work on. But I think it starts
with your mindset, you know, and your attitude and your
approach coming in. We don't have time for the poor means,
we don't have time for the will with us. We
got to come to work, you know, And I think,
(01:17:51):
you know, I have to exemplify that. I don't think
that I can be I can you know, I can't
let my actions betray my words. And if I'm going
to say those things, well I have to be a
model of that. And that's in our preparation. That's in
the way we install the game plan. That's and how
we think we can win the game, and what it's
going to take to win the game. That's with the
(01:18:12):
level of intent and intensity and energy and practice. Those
are all things that I can control. I can't control
things outside of our building and outside of our team,
but I can control that, and I can control our mindset,
and I can control our approach, and then ultimately the
staff and the players follow suit that way. And so
I have to look at me first, and I can't
(01:18:32):
let my actions betray my words. If I want our
players to act a certain way, I surely better model that.
Speaker 1 (01:18:38):
It was asked about the test of the team culture
and attitude, and is he able to come up with
a ready example of how that sort of testing works
and what his team does to pass those tests.
Speaker 3 (01:18:53):
I think at the end of the day, I'll be
able to answer that better later in the week. It
probably wouldn't be fair to these guys to say, you know,
our cultures perfect right now, because they're all they're going
to do the right things. They were great today. You know,
they came in, they were coachable, they took to the
tough coaching. From Saturday, we went through our good, bad,
and ugly. They came out energized. They practiced really well today.
(01:19:16):
You know that I called up the team and that
was done. I know the offense that the players got
together and they called it up and so their mindset
is all there. So that tells me the cultures right.
But at the end of the day, we got to
play together as a team Saturday, and we got to
play better complimentary football than we have and we just
didn't capitalize on some opportunities to play that way Saturday,
(01:19:37):
and we need to be better in doing that. We
got to win as a team, and we can't rely
on one aspect or another to get it done. We
got to play really well collectively as a team.
Speaker 1 (01:19:45):
NIX was some question from our old friend Kirk Bowles,
who of course now writes for the Houston Chronicle for
so many years of the Austin American Statesman, and Kirk's
had it a little bewildered when he asked the question.
He goes, how stunned are you? You know, you know,
how could so many of us, myself included, he said,
(01:20:06):
be wrong about your team.
Speaker 3 (01:20:09):
I don't know if I'm stunned. I mean, take the other.
How many teams are there in college football one hundred
and thirty thirty six. Take the other one hundred and
thirty five and have them go play out Ohio State
and at the Swamp see how they do.
Speaker 1 (01:20:21):
Yeah, all right, So there's an answer to that. Back
to talking about the offensive line and Sark trying to
take some of the pressure off of Arch and this
offensive front. How much does play calling have to do
with taking the pressure off of those guys.
Speaker 3 (01:20:44):
To Archer's defense, he can only do what's called right,
and so I wouldn't I wouldn't clear it, definitely would
not put that on him. You know. I think we
went into that game with a mindset of we wanted
to attack him vertically down the field. We felt like
that was where they were susceptible, and clearly they were.
Speaker 6 (01:21:00):
We did.
Speaker 3 (01:21:00):
We hit a couple, We didn't hit some. You know,
we missed a couple. And every game is different in
the approach of how we try to attack people. We
had some opportunities for some more rhythmic quicker throws. It
didn't it didn't come to fruition the way we would
have liked. But again, every every week, every game's got
its own formula for success for us of how we're
going to try to attack an opponent, and the flow
(01:21:24):
of the game to your point then dictates kind of
where you start leaning into them, where you start going.
I thought Florida, to their credit, Ron Roberts is a
great coach. You know, they did a good job of
understanding that that was where we probably needed to go
and then tried to take that away from us and
and made that aspect of our game difficult and force
us to kind of hold the ball a little bit more.
(01:21:45):
So credit to them on that, but we've got to
be more creative to find ways to get some of
those more easy completions.
Speaker 1 (01:21:52):
And then one more for sarg and this one had
to do with easy yard, so to speak, and to
be able to get to get some of those higher
percentage not only throws but also runs. Because it was
pointed out and Sart talked about it earlier, and we
had it earlier in the show, and then obviously when
(01:22:13):
we carried the news conference in its entirety live this morning,
you heard him talk about this. This is probably the
most stunning statistic five games into the season that the
longest run from scrimmage for a running back has been
fourteen yards now, there's been a couple of Jets sweeps
from receivers, namely Ryan Wingo that's helped out on that.
And then of course Arch Banning is a leading ground gainer,
(01:22:36):
had a thirty six yard run on Saturday, the longest
run of the season at this point. So about getting
that running game engaged again and getting his running backs
to be a big part of that. Are there ways
to generate short, easy yardage with the running game struggling
that ultimately incorporates all parts of the offense.
Speaker 3 (01:22:58):
Yeah, I mean, just like that, we've got to be creative.
We've got to find more ways to be creative, that
way to get positive yards on first and second down.
And again, to your point, there's a lot of different
ways to get to that done. We got to have
enough kind of in our toolbox on Saturday to be
able to get to those things when maybe the traditional
(01:23:20):
run game isn't as effective as it needs to be.
Speaker 1 (01:23:23):
Okay, So there it is. There's the weekly conversation. Those
are all the responses that sard game and of course,
obviously when we bring you the press conference on Monday,
you hear it all from Stem to stern with the
questions included from the assembled media all the way through
from the start. We start our coverage at eleven o'clock
(01:23:44):
in the morning, my cardboll Hardts joining me there, a
recap of the game, we hear from long worn players
from our postgame conversations with them, and then start and
then starting at eleven thirty is when coach Sarkegen comes
in and start takes the podium at that point and
(01:24:06):
then takes it up to about the top of the hour.
So we bring it to you in its entirety on
Monday mornings with the coverage beginning at eleven and starts
speaking at eleven thirty, and then we come back during
this program do what we just did, and that is
to break it down and bring you his answers to
certain questions. All right, coming up, We've got some other
(01:24:27):
topics to get to and we'll continue to do that.
We've got more in the NFL. We continue right here
on a Longhorns Monday, but also a Football Monday right
here on sports Radio AM thirteen under the Zone and
the iHeartRadio app. It's on the same album that's still
Rock and Rolling Media and other people said Ah, he's
a ballad here is all that kind of stuff. You
want to do anything you want to piss off Billy Joel,
(01:24:48):
just to categorize him telling me belongs in one slot
or another. He doesn't. He doesn't like that, and he
would promptly go about proving he could do whatever he
needed to do. You know he could, uh, you know,
he could. He could wind up being a rocker or
a balladier or anything like that. He could, he could
do that if you want to do that. Hey, I
(01:25:10):
don't think I've ever really asked you this question. Are
you into the NBA? By what? Into the end?
Speaker 6 (01:25:19):
Yah?
Speaker 2 (01:25:19):
I follow along with it, but I have to say
I I've never been a league pass watcher. I've mostly
you know, if I'm if I'm watching the NBA two
days in a row, it's usually the playoffs. Like I'm
a pretty casual fan when it comes to the regular season,
I keep up with the storylines. I think the off
season stuff is very interesting. I love the NBA playoffs.
(01:25:40):
I don't track it really night by night, and it's
kind of the one major sport that I don't do
that for.
Speaker 1 (01:25:47):
Which, also, by the way, brings me to another question
for are you going to become a resident NHL experts
since since you worked for the Washington Capitals before he
came down here.
Speaker 2 (01:25:58):
Well, I'd be honored to do that the NHL. Okay,
and you follow it very very closely, I do. Okay,
are very good? Okay good? The in Cam is our
regular NBA honk anyway, so we will get him in
here to talk about that.
Speaker 1 (01:26:12):
He's probably pumped up tonight because my son, like Cameron,
for whatever reason, is an Oklahoma City Thunder fan. In
the case, my son is because he was he was
a fan when Kevin Durant was there.
Speaker 4 (01:26:24):
So this is Thunder Dolphins.
Speaker 1 (01:26:26):
No, no different so Dolphins. This one is thunder Packers, right,
Red Sox. Okay, the older son would be Dolphins, Lakers,
Royals because he worked for the Kansas City Royals.
Speaker 2 (01:26:44):
So Thunder Packers, Red Sox. You love young teams.
Speaker 1 (01:26:49):
Maybe that's the reason why, Maybe that's maybe that's it.
He started liking the Thunder but when Kevin Durant was
playing there and then he just stuck with him. He
really likes SGA Big and Shakegildses Alexander so so yeah,
and now he's happy because they won a title see,
and he actually went to game one of the NBA Finals,
(01:27:09):
so he drove it when and when he was in
college in Wichita Falls in Midwestern state. It's only a
two hour drive to Oklahoma City, so he would frequently
go up there or go up dif from time to
time for games. I took him to a game that
we went to a game when they played the Mavericks
because I'm a Mavericks fan. We went to a game
right after it was like the day after Kobe Bryant died. Wow,
(01:27:33):
And it was really was in college. Yeah, and he
was too, and in fact, you guys are pretty close
in age, and it was a very bizarre evening and
banners and tributes and stuff like that. But we did
go uh to a game that night. Uh so, yeah,
his team plays my team tonight. It's it's an exhibition
(01:27:55):
game they play, and they're playing in Fort Worth.
Speaker 6 (01:27:58):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (01:27:59):
You know these exhibition games in the NBA they play
in different places obviously, and so they're playing at Dickey's
Arena four, which is a nice building. It's a nice arena.
Texas women are going to play Baylor there this year.
Speaker 2 (01:28:08):
Didn't the men play A and M there? Not too
long they did. Well, it's it's it's longer than you think. Yeah,
it's longer than you think.
Speaker 1 (01:28:15):
It goes back. It was right after the arena opened.
Speaker 2 (01:28:17):
Sure, not that many installments of the rivalry between right exactly,
But they did play them there, that's true.
Speaker 1 (01:28:24):
And and in Oklahoma City played the game last night
against the Charlotte Hornets. And they played them in Charleston,
South Carolina. They played at the North Charleston Coliseum. They
love basketball there that part of the country. Well, it
is basketball country in the states of North Carolina and
(01:28:45):
South Carolina. Obviously it's it's big. And and the College
of Charleston is big down there in basketball. Last night
and they did win. They beat Charlotte UH fourteen. Last night.
They play they play the Mavericks UH tonight and it's
and it's in Fort Worth, UH that they'll that they'll
(01:29:06):
play that game uh tonight. The NBA is in its
pre season uh portion right now through out the course
of this weekend. Then when they get in a little
later toward the latter part of the month is when
we'll we'll see more from the NBA with regard to that. Okay,
(01:29:27):
the here's big news you were wondering about this. Uh.
Coming up at the top of the hour is Game
two of the National League Division Series between the Dodgers
and the Phillies in Philadelphia. Dodgers up one game to
none of that, and then tonight is Game two of
the series in Milwaukee between the Brewers and the Chicago Cups.
(01:29:50):
There was a big point of concern about Jackson Curio.
He had the lead Game one with the right hamstring
injury after legging out an infield hitting the bottom of
the second inning. It's the same hamstring he injured in July,
also playing against the Cups. Now Pat Murphy, the manager,
said today Chario isn't one hundred percent, but he will
(01:30:12):
start tonight.
Speaker 4 (01:30:13):
Okay, Yeah, he had a MRI.
Speaker 1 (01:30:15):
Yep, had an MRI. They say if he's hampered it all,
he will not. He will not. They'll pull him out
of the game, he'll be removed. Murphy said, I'm sure
it's not hundred percent, but I'm more worried about behavior
than feelings. However he feels. However he feels isn't as
important as how he behaves. If he gets in a
(01:30:38):
situation where he doesn't feel like he can do the job.
We're going to take him out. He said, Okay, what's
the big balblell? He was three for three in Game one,
drove him three runs before he had the injury. During
the year at two seventy twenty one homers seventy at RBIs.
I used a key component for this Burgers team that
doesn't count on, you know, long ball smashing a lot.
(01:30:59):
They do all those little things correctly. They do. They're very,
very fundamentally sound ball club. But it led them to
ninety six wins, more wins than anybody else in the
major leagues. So they have home field advantage all the
way through the playoffs and it'll and it will continue
(01:31:21):
as long as they're alive. They'll have the home field
advantage the first two games in Milwaukee, they would go
to Chicago for games three and fourth. There was a
fifth and decisive game in that best of five Division Series,
it would be back at American Family Field in Milwaukee.
Then if they advance, they would have games one and two,
and if necessary, games six and seven of the NLCS
(01:31:42):
against either the Dodgers or the Phillies. And if they
advanced that into the World Series, they would have games
one and two, and if necessary, Game six and seven
of the World Series. They earned that during the course
of the year.
Speaker 4 (01:31:54):
Yeah, I think it'd be a bigger deal.
Speaker 2 (01:31:56):
And this sounds silly to think this far ahead, it'd
be a bigger deal for them in the World World
Series potentially than it would be before that, only because
you look at who's still alive in the American League
and all of those teams, big disparities home versus away.
Speaker 1 (01:32:10):
You're right, do they do much better at home than
they do on the road, No question about that. In
the Nationally, both the Dodgers and Phillies have proven they
can win away from home. Cubs have as well, but
not as much. And the Cubs are in the same
position tonight that the Yankees were in yesterday. You need
to win. It's not a death knell if you lose.
(01:32:31):
But if you do lose, you really backed into a
corner because even though you're going home, you're down two
games to none, and you lose one more time and
it's over. But you're in a position if you win,
and this is the position the Mariners are in. You
didn't get a sweep at home, which he split at home,
and you know that if you win at least one
in Detroit, you could have game five back at home
(01:32:53):
if it got to that. So you would have that
if you needed that. So you got to try to
see if you can split. And then for the teams
that have been successful on the road, and that's the
Dodgers winning game one. If they're able to win Game two,
they've got a stranglehold on it going back home. With
Yamamoto set to start game three, it would work that way.
(01:33:14):
Tyler Glass now is scheduled as the game four starter
if it goes to a game four, and if it
goes to a game five, manager Dave Roberts said today
it would he show Ao Tommy. He would go back
to the mouth.
Speaker 2 (01:33:24):
Would you make of the Blue Jays taking Trey Yesavich
out of the game after five and a third perfect?
Speaker 4 (01:33:29):
Well, no hit, I should say, oh.
Speaker 1 (01:33:30):
We had innings. They're playing those percentages as well, figuring
they were well in shape to win the game. He
gets credit for the win, and then you go on
about it. And then if you need him for game five,
you've got him for Game five.
Speaker 4 (01:33:45):
Yeah, just tough to tell a can't Hey, Yeah, he
take give me the ball.
Speaker 5 (01:33:49):
You're done.
Speaker 4 (01:33:50):
For the day when he's got the adrenaline pumping like that,
but he was smart.
Speaker 1 (01:33:53):
Yeah. Yeah. It was. By the way, ESPN set viewership
records during the Wild Hard Series, and it was fueled
by a significant spike in watchers from young demographics.
Speaker 4 (01:34:09):
Yeah, young people are coming back to baseball.
Speaker 1 (01:34:11):
That's what Major League Baseball wants to hear. The network
announced today the game three of that Red Sox Yankey
series averaged averaged seven million, four hundred and thirty nine
thousand viewers. That's a single game Wild Card Series record
under the current format. And I know most of you said, Okay,
what it's Red Sox Shankeyes, what would you expect. It
(01:34:32):
was the largest audience for an ESPN Baseball game since
the Red Sox and Yankees had that one game Wildcard
playoff four years ago. Back in twenty twenty one, the
network averaged four million, six hundred and twenty five thousand
viewers for the eleven games. That's a new high for
the current format. But here's the deal. Viewership jumped eighty
(01:34:54):
nine percent from last year for the under thirty five
democratic demographic and one hundred and eight percent for kids
seventeen and under. The total viewership for the Wild Cards
herees is up sixty four percent from last year.
Speaker 2 (01:35:09):
Well, I think the sport's doing a better job marketing
at stars. I think the changes have made the game
a little bit more exciting and these are great signs.
Speaker 1 (01:35:17):
And then for the traditionalist in the postseason, it goes
back to no ghost runner out at second base if
it goes extra aning.
Speaker 4 (01:35:24):
I like that. I like that we don't do that
in the postseason.
Speaker 1 (01:35:27):
Yeah, I'm up for that as well. We'll be back
to wrap up today's edition. In the program, I'm thirteen
hunderd The Zone.
