Speaker 1 (00:03):
Well, welcome to your Monday. I know it's Monday, but
at least we're getting a little closer into this holiday season,
to the biggest day of the holiday season coming up.
And also for those like my producer Jay Carman, they're
already in the holiday season right in this day number
(00:25):
two of Hanukkah. Yeah, it'll be the second night tonight.
There you go. All right, So good afternoon, and welcome
to the program here on Sports Radio AM thirteen under
the Zone. My name is Craig Way. He would be
Jay Herman, and we're glad to have you with us.
And coming off a weekend that was extremely busy, but
it's always like that when you get to the overlap
(00:46):
season of football and basketball and then basketball and baseball,
you have a lot of that so there's a lot
to unpack. It start saying unwrap, but we're not. We're
just now still into the part where people are starting
to rap gives. Well, you know, it's uh for for
some folks, it comes naturally. My wife is one of
those people that can just it comes naturally to her
(01:09):
to be able to you know, gather up, purchase and
wrap gifts in pretty quick, pretty quick, short order. I
would say it's a skill, I think, and I've moved
around so much.
Speaker 2 (01:23):
I'm often you know, shipping the gifts and there, you
know a lot of different balls in the air in
terms of what's going to arrive when at the right time.
Speaker 3 (01:31):
It can't get there too early. Do I address it
to myself so they don't open it right away?
Speaker 1 (01:35):
Oh? Good point? And thought about that. Okay, yeah, there's
another way to do that.
Speaker 3 (01:39):
When it works great, it works great.
Speaker 1 (01:41):
So how'd your weeken go? Would you have would you
have going on over the weekend? Well? I actually had
a you know, one of the quieter weekends.
Speaker 3 (01:47):
Obviously.
Speaker 2 (01:48):
I worked yesterday behind the board for the women's basketball game.
What a what a performance that was for Mick Schaeffer
and his team. I know we're going to get to that.
But I had some friends in town who went to
school with me, and they were, you know, they had
this visit to Austin, planned to visit some of my
other friends.
Speaker 3 (02:05):
Before they even knew I was moving back.
Speaker 4 (02:08):
That was me.
Speaker 2 (02:09):
Uh, we got to got to catch up, went for
went for a nice hike and had a nice dinner.
Speaker 1 (02:15):
It was good. Where'd you hike on the Green Belt?
Speaker 2 (02:18):
Okay, I'm trying to think, because there's a trailhead for
it not far from here at all.
Speaker 1 (02:24):
I'm trying to think if I've ever set foot on
the green Belt, and the answer is probably not. Now
I think not that I'm against it. I mean I
used to go hiking on the applies and trail, so
I've been. I've hiked on the trail in North Carolina, UH, Virginia, Tennessee,
(02:47):
West Virginia, Maryland, UH, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York State, Connecticut, Vermont,
ten of I guess it's in thirteen or fourteenth stays.
I've hiked parts of it. I've never done been a
through hiker or anything like that, but so I enjoy
all that stuff. It's just, you know, with my schedule
(03:09):
this day and age, it's a little hard to work
in some of those activities unfortunately. But maybe somewhere down
the line tell you what we do have coming up
on the program this afternoon, we will hear from Texas
women's head coach Pick Schaeffer. A most impressive win for Texas.
It be Baylor by thirty five points yesterday. It was
the largest margin of defeat for a Baylor women's team
(03:31):
since two thousand and six. Wow, it's been that long.
And we'll also hear from Jordan Lee out of that
Texas victory, as the log Orange won handily in Fort Worth.
There's much to discuss with regard to this states. To
professional NFL football teams. The Houston Texans now of one
(03:55):
six in a row, really on a roll. And for
the first behind this season, when the graphic comes up
on the network about the playoff teams Division leaders, and
then they got wildcards and they got in the hunt
for the first time, they've moved off of the in
the Hunt line into the second line, which is wildcard.
(04:17):
Right now, if the season ended today, and by the way,
every person, not every but just about every person I've
ever heard of when they try to break down the
NFL stuff and they go, right now, if the season
end today, and it's not ending today, No, Joe, we
all know that. But I was about to say it myself,
(04:38):
you know, And it's not ending yet. It's not over yet.
But if the season ended today and it hasn't, the
Texans would be in the playoffs. They would be the
third wildcard and they would be playing in Foxborough against
the Number two seed, the New England Patriots if that
were the case. But there's still time for the Texans
perhaps to catch and pass the Jacksonville Jaguars, although they
(05:00):
look every bit the part of a team that seems
poised to win the AFC South. They blew out the
hapless Jets yesterday and they're now ten and four. But anyway,
Texans win, and we'll hear from Demiko Ryan's their head coach,
Noll's Cowboys, that's so fortunate. Didn't play well in a
(05:21):
lot of areas last night. Just didn't. And I say
that as a person who watched not one minute of
it live but listened to almost the entire radio broadcast.
I was up in the metroplex of the weekend, so
driving back last night, I got back after midnight London,
I did, and doing that, I listened to brad Ham
(05:44):
and bab Blofenberg the entire game driving back, and they
pretty much echoed what I just said. In fact, I
got it from them really that the team just did
not play well in a variety of areas where they
needed to play. Couldn't get a pass rush on JJ McCarthy, who,
by the way, I picked up for my fantasy team,
(06:05):
and he did well. Others did not. My season is over.
I got eliminated in the wildcard round last night.
Speaker 3 (06:11):
I'm on the ropes.
Speaker 1 (06:12):
Yeah, so I'm done. I'm probably done the night, beaten
by my own son. Yeah, and he was the sixth seed.
I was the three seed out.
Speaker 2 (06:22):
Do you think higher seeds should get an advantage in
the first round of the fantasy playoffs?
Speaker 1 (06:26):
Well, they do in our league, the top two. And
I missed being the two seed by one, literally one point.
I lost in a tiebreaker back several weeks ago. That
cost me being the two seed, and I wind up
being the three and I get knocked out. So anyway,
that's all all. That's neither here nor there. But anyway
that listening to to Brad and Babe last night talk
(06:50):
about it, they just said, didn't get enough of a rush,
a pass rush on McCarthy, didn't do that, and then
really just didn't get enough consistent offense going. And they
couldn't keep the Minnesota pass rush off of Dak Prescott.
If they weren't sacking him, they were hitting him, they
(07:11):
were you know, putting him under arrest, and he was
having to throw on the run and you know, all
that kind of stuff. He was under pressure virtually the
entire night. So now the Cowboys are all but but
they're not done completely. Mathematically. We'll hear from Brian Schottenheim
or their head coach, so we have that to get too,
(07:32):
and some other things as well. It was it was
a crazy high school football weekend for the state semifinals.
The Greater Austin area has bowed out of the playoffs
now what with the defeats over the weekend, Atlanto in
Class three A falling to Yoakum. However, congratulations by the
(07:54):
way to lifetime Longhorn Bo Robinson, who it's an All
Southwest Conference defensive lineman at Texas back in the late
eighties and part of that shocked the nation team in
nineteen ninety and one of those few long ones that
went four and oh his collegiate career against Oklahoma. He
(08:16):
has been for the past several years. They head coach
at Yoakam and his Yoakam Bulldogs are going to the
three A Division one state championship. They beat Lano to
finish Offlanto season. Then the season ended for the two
remaining six eight programs, Lake Travis and Dandygriff. Lake Travis
just really struggled to get their offense in gear against
(08:37):
a very good and athletic Galena Park north Shore team.
In fact, they had a couple of turnovers funnels into
the end zone that cost him opportunities, and then north
Shore just kind of kept him at arm's length.
Speaker 2 (08:47):
And Yeah, if it was going to be one unit
that let Lake Travis down, it wasn't going to be that.
Speaker 1 (08:52):
It wasn't going to be that defense, right, And then
for Vandergriff, I think Drew Sanders probably did about as
good as coaching jobs this year as he did last
year when they won the state championship. To get that
team back to the final four from the injuries they
had early in the season and a couple of losses,
including a district loss to McNeil, for them to turn
(09:15):
it around and run the table to rest of the
way to win twenty five to six A and then
beat Westlake and by district and then go on the
run and get them all the way to the semi
final round. I thought he did a great job, but
they just ran into a Sholdon ce King team from Houston,
too fast, too talented, and and and King advanced to the
(09:38):
state championship where they're going to play the Soto And
I looked at the yearly computer thing. Computer just likes
putting the letters p K beside it picket's. It could
be one heck of a shootout and one more on
that that Soota game, because I worked for television and
it was. It was crazy them knocking off number one
(10:00):
South Lake Carrol. There was. It was a crazy weekend.
We'll get to a lot of those things. Also, here's
something else we have to get to. We are going
to give away some tickets to Texas Long Orange Basketball
as the Long Orange will play tomorrow night at Moody
Center against Lemoyne. I think I asked you this last week.
(10:22):
You know where Lamoyne is, right.
Speaker 2 (10:23):
I do?
Speaker 3 (10:24):
What's in Syracuse?
Speaker 1 (10:25):
Yes it is.
Speaker 3 (10:25):
I called their softball games, that's right. Okay at Mount
Saint Mary's.
Speaker 1 (10:31):
Oh okay, all right, So you were calling it for
some Mount Saint Mary's against Lamoye. That's right, I got you.
So they play, do you does anybody know? Maybe you
know since you've called a game against Lamoyne, I never
have a Wildelmarr for the first time. Why they're called
the dolphins. They're in upstate New York.
Speaker 3 (10:46):
For heaven's sakes, you never seen a dolphin in upstate
New York.
Speaker 1 (10:50):
No, And I don't know that anybody else has, at
least that wasn't in captivity.
Speaker 3 (10:54):
Perhaps your great Jazz in Utah.
Speaker 1 (10:58):
Yeah right, well, and they just that guy I got
lumped over from you.
Speaker 3 (11:02):
A lot of lakes in Los Angeles.
Speaker 1 (11:03):
Yeah, yeah, by ten thousand, like there were in Minneapolis
when they were there. So anyway, not too many Grizzlies
in Memphis either, I would say, now, more of them
up up north. Yeah. So anyway, Well, we've got tickets
we're gonna give away. We'll tell you about that. How
we're going to do that here in just a few moments.
(11:24):
As always, certainly, when we invite your texts to the program,
you want to text us feel free. All you do
is you text the word Texas, follow by your question
and comment to eight one five three zero. Text the
word Texas follow out your question and comment to eight
one five three zero. Standard messaging and data rates may apply.
All Right, we've got a lot to get to. Some
(11:45):
college football notes to get to college basketball, the NFL,
and more. Here on a Monday, Glad to have you
with us on Sports Radio AM thirteen under the Zone
and where you always always listen to us for free
on the iHeartRadio app here on a Monday, Glad to
(12:07):
have you with us here. What are you hitting us
back with here?
Speaker 2 (12:12):
Houston band kron beIN collaborating with Leon Bridges.
Speaker 1 (12:16):
Okay, B side is the name of the track. Okay,
if it is a B side, it sounds good for
a B side. Yeah, not too shabby, all right. Houston
Texans have been anything but shabby of late, winners of
six straight now nine and five, and really took care
(12:37):
of the feckless Cardinals yesterday and winning that one forty
to twenty.
Speaker 2 (12:41):
I haven't had the word feckless since Survivor like ten
years ago.
Speaker 1 (12:44):
Oh really, well, it applies in the case of the
Cardinals and hapless Yeah hapless yeh. I think I used
hapless with the Jets, you know, fitting?
Speaker 3 (12:58):
Yeah, rudderless might work better.
Speaker 1 (13:00):
There you go, there you go. I like that. Okay.
The Texans won forty to twenty yesterday, so they keep
the keep the train rolling. They won six in a row. Uh,
They've got two games left at home against the Raiders.
And then at the Chargers so they they have a
real shot to get into the playoffs. Let's hear from
(13:21):
the always entertaining head coach in his locker room speech,
Dimiko ryans, but I.
Speaker 5 (13:27):
Feel great about that win.
Speaker 6 (13:32):
And then I had really proud of you guys were
just say coming out handling business, doing exactly what we
talked about, everybody showing up. It took everybody all right
to get this job done.
Speaker 1 (13:42):
And I'm proud of you guys.
Speaker 6 (13:43):
The one who jumped at all taking the ball first,
got schools out. We had another on, we had another takeaway,
we had Kamart.
Speaker 5 (13:57):
Right the right to bat meets man.
Speaker 6 (13:59):
Great up by your they're flipping over to the offense
side of the ball.
Speaker 5 (14:03):
All right, Cez, I'll stand today, man, I'll stand today.
Speaker 1 (14:07):
By way to lead up, I can be the entire game.
Speaker 7 (14:09):
Like the leaders.
Speaker 8 (14:10):
I never got it, got.
Speaker 6 (14:11):
It against all two times with NiCoT to me would be.
Speaker 1 (14:17):
Calling I'll standing all.
Speaker 6 (14:18):
My god, I got one game all one game ball guys,
all right, it goes to him.
Speaker 5 (14:23):
This guy was his debut games.
Speaker 3 (14:33):
Karki Jawar Jordan, and he quite a performance.
Speaker 1 (14:40):
In the game.
Speaker 6 (14:41):
Hey, that's why I congratulate man. Hey, most yards ever
by Texas in the saying was me, hey, rid of
you guys. Man enjoyed in one way to come out
(15:02):
take care of business. All right, Still, we got a
lot to improve on. Always always check yourself. How much
better can we be? All right, same thing next week
wherever we got like, let's go be on your details.
Let's have a great week of preparation. Make sure we
enjoyed this one. It's always always enjoy and winning they're
always hard to come by.
Speaker 5 (15:20):
But I really love the way you guys went out
to handle business days.
Speaker 1 (15:23):
Great job. Yeah all right, so very spirited locker room.
So then afterwards Ryan's was asked about rookie Jerward Jordan's performance,
biggest day ever for a Texans back like that in
his debut and how the running game has really elevated
the Houston offense.
Speaker 9 (15:43):
Toward did an outstanding job for us, for the young
man to come in and for his first game to
have a debut like he had me and he of
course he broke a record. Most of ours is a
Texan and a debut game. He ran the ball very
very well, efficient, showed the explosiveness, showed the speed, that
he's had and that we've seen you in practice and
(16:06):
practice what he's been on practice squad for us. It
just shows again like whenever your number is called, are
you ready for that opportunity? And no one knows until
you get that moment, and it's about you taking advantage
of that moment and not looking back.
Speaker 5 (16:20):
And I thought you wore handled it very well.
Speaker 1 (16:24):
So that was one bit of complimentary conversation from the
head coach. He also pointed out when asked, you know,
what is your offensive line doing right right now supposed
to earlier in the year, and are they getting more
comfortable together?
Speaker 9 (16:40):
And we'll keep I'll have to go back and look
at the film, but from my dvantage point, looked like
we were finishing blocks a little bit better today. Still
always room to clean some things up. For the most part,
I thought we finished better. Therefore we were able to
have think a better average in the run game today.
Speaker 1 (16:55):
Okay, all right, so there's that. Then he will wash
asked about, uh, the offensive operation overall and how clean
was it today?
Speaker 5 (17:09):
Our operation was was really really great today, c J.
Speaker 9 (17:13):
Starting with CJ, I thought he did a great job
of managing the operation pre snap in and out of
the huddle like he did. Our standard job today it
starts with him. Uh, well, it starts with kay Lee
getting the calls in going to CJ. I thought the
communication was seamless. I thought the guys did a great
job of communicating breaking the huddle, getting lined up and that.
You know, that's a low hanging fruit for us, right,
(17:34):
and we did a great better job of improving that.
And now we got to find a way to steal,
finish and steal some things that we left out there,
not only on the offensive side, but on the defensive
side as well. We left a lot of players out
there that we just had to keep playing up to
our standard, right, and that's all. That's what we judge
ourselves against. The standard. The standard is the standard. It
doesn't change. So we'll continue to look at the tape
(17:56):
intently to see.
Speaker 1 (17:57):
Where where we can get better.
Speaker 9 (17:59):
I do want to come implement our special teams thought
for Jamal Hill, the way he came out on kickoff
and really set the tone for our special teams unit,
that's what we needed. We needed that big play. One
of our keys, the victor was taking the ball on
special teams. He comes out and he does that, so
it was great to see him make an impact play there.
Speaker 5 (18:19):
And also for our just blocking unit, all the.
Speaker 9 (18:23):
Guys did a great job of blocking, allowing j Nole
to hit some explosive returns, something we've been missing a
lot in our return game. We've been one guy away,
and I felt like we did a great job of
sustaining our blocks today. And when we do it the
right way and we do it well, we have an
explosive returner that can flip the field for us.
Speaker 5 (18:40):
So really proud of our special teams, not all of them.
Speaker 9 (18:43):
Tommy did our standard job punting the football, giving us
a backed up op we're able to go three and
out there late in the game and capitalize with points.
So it's just it's beautiful to see it done the
right way. So really proud of everybody. He's also proud
of his quarterback.
Speaker 1 (18:59):
You heard him talking about when he's handing out the
game balls and talking about how probably was of CJ.
Stroud's work. So what all did he feel that Stroud
did particularly well And was it part of the game
plan to spread the ball out as much as they did.
Speaker 5 (19:14):
CJ played very clean and fishing game.
Speaker 9 (19:17):
I thought he did what I'm most proud of him
is I think he did a great job of just
his decision making when it comes to the plays, not
that he's just looking or staring at one person. He's
going through his progression the right way and you'll see
multiple guys catch the ball and make plays because he's
not just eyeing in on one single target. He's going
where the play dictates for him to go with the
(19:38):
coverage tells him. He's making the right decisions. And that's
where he's grown.
Speaker 6 (19:42):
He's improved a lot, and I'm excited to see him,
Like since he's come back each week, he's gotten better
each week, and so probably the best game he's had
this year. Right, he's our entire offense done a great
job protecting the ball. We have to continue to do that.
Speaker 9 (19:56):
Protect the ball and on defense, special teams take the
ball away with get opportunities and that's how you go
out and win games.
Speaker 1 (20:02):
And on the ground, they did the job Nico Collins
and on through the air as well as what they
did got from Juard Jordan on the ground and Colins
reaching one thousand yards for the third time receiving.
Speaker 9 (20:15):
And how about his impact, this big playmaker Nico is
unstoppable man. He does a great job anytime the ball
is in his vicinity, Like I know he's some type
of way he's coming down with the football. He a
guy who doesn't say much, but he's had an outstanding,
outstanding year again, like and we're not even done and
then he's, you know, eclipsed that thousand yard mark again.
(20:38):
I'm just proud of him for how he shows up,
the consistency of which he operates with every single week,
the joy that he brings and shows up with, the smile,
the energy on his like it's it's unmatched. So you
love to see a guy like that doing well. All right,
he doesn't. He's not able to do that without CJ
and on him finding that connection. So they've done a
(20:59):
really great up and.
Speaker 5 (21:01):
Got one call back on one of his biggest plays.
Speaker 9 (21:03):
I hate that for him, but he shows up no
matter what, no matter what the coverage is, no matter
who he's up against, He's always going to show up
Big four US in any game.
Speaker 1 (21:12):
And then one more from Demico Ryans. When this team
had started, remember oh and three and then there were
three and five. Certainly when they started owing three, they
were counted out dead and gone. Not on this program, no, no,
(21:32):
but a lot of the national pundits, not by your producer, Craig.
Just remember that. Yeah, that's right, you said I wouldn't
give up on him just yet. I think you said
that when they were three and five, that's right. And
all they've done since then is win six in a row? How, Demiko,
how as your football team when able to win six straight?
Speaker 5 (21:53):
Now, you guys don't want to hear this. I didn't
even know it six in a rows.
Speaker 1 (21:57):
He just told me.
Speaker 9 (22:00):
Yeah, that's truly is that is that one game at
a time mentality. Man, I know nobody wants to hear,
but that's that's what I believe. That's all what we
can control is one game at a time. Come out
handle business right each week. That's what we have to
keep doing down the stretch here. We got to go
out handle business. I told our guys, you go out
handle business each week, and you're just putting yourself in
(22:22):
a better spot.
Speaker 5 (22:23):
So you just keep going out controlling the week.
Speaker 9 (22:25):
Control, not really focused on all right, what everyone else
in the AFC is doing. Focus on the Texans. Focus on,
you know, stepping your game up and playing better Okay, yeah,
it is is a way to do it, so you
know that.
Speaker 1 (22:41):
And and what a turnaround, what you know, what a
way to flip the script on this season and get
it completely turned back around so that they are, as
I said, if the regular season ended today, they would
be in the playoffs. Now games left that they are
(23:02):
their upcoming two games that they have to deal with
are the Raiders and Chargers. So uh therese, you know,
you look at that and say, I think the Uh
think the Raiders be okay, they didn't handle them. Chargers
took care of the Chiefs yesterday and eliminated Kansas City.
And Patrick Mahomes is eliminated from the rest of the
(23:24):
year anyway with his knee injury, although update today says
it's not quite as bad as was the put it
this way, Uh, it's it's where he can certainly recover
and come back. It's not as bad as my Cal
Parsons injury, because that's bad still too. You know, franchise
(23:44):
changing injuries.
Speaker 2 (23:45):
With Mahomes going down, you figure this might incentivize Travis
Kelcey to hang it up if his quarterback were to
miss the first part of next season. You never know
what what Travis thinking about decisions like that, and for
a green Bay team that gave up what two first
round picks?
Speaker 3 (24:03):
Yeah, losing Michael Parsons.
Speaker 2 (24:06):
If it's anything longer than the traditional you know, nine
to twelve month timetable, I mean, that's that's impacting two seasons.
Speaker 1 (24:13):
That's huge. It could be really really impactful going forward,
if you know, depending on how you know damaging it
might be and how long it might ultimately wind up
keeping him out.
Speaker 2 (24:31):
But Cameron Parker and I drafted Super Bowl contenders on Tuesday.
As for who we thought was the most likely to
go win it all, Green Bay was Cam's number one pick.
Was it really well you could debate that at the time,
but it would not be the number one pick now.
Speaker 1 (24:49):
Yeah, And so this was he he was betting that
they would win the Super Bowl. The way you win
the draft is you have the Super Bowl winner on
your team.
Speaker 3 (25:00):
That's it. So he had the number one pick, he
took green Bay.
Speaker 1 (25:04):
Who did you take?
Speaker 3 (25:05):
So I then picked second and third and I went
Rams in Buffalo.
Speaker 1 (25:10):
Okay, okay, who else did he pick? I'll pull up
our teams here. The reason why I say that is,
I mean, you know, Obviously, the Packers are in trouble.
But even if they had not lost Michael Parsons and
only lost the game to the Broncos yesterday, it'd still
be nine to four and one and still pretty much
out of the division race. Almost they get to play
(25:30):
the Bears again, but in Chicago, they're gonna have a
hard time catching the Bears to win it. So, and
it's hard to win the Super Bowl when you're on
the road in the postseason.
Speaker 2 (25:40):
So we only got seven picks each, and so if
a team was undrapped, so you could tell us who
you would pick.
Speaker 3 (25:49):
Here's Cameron's team, Packers.
Speaker 2 (25:52):
This is the order he took him the Packers, the
forty nine Ers, the Texans, the Patriots, the Chargers, the Ravens,
and the Bucks.
Speaker 1 (26:04):
So you might like my team more.
Speaker 2 (26:06):
The Rams, the Bills, Broncos, Seahawks, Eagles, Lions, and Jaguars.
Speaker 1 (26:14):
Yep, your team's better.
Speaker 3 (26:15):
Nobody picked the Bears. That was the surprising omission.
Speaker 2 (26:18):
Interesting we only we said, okay, seven teams make the
playoffs from each conference.
Speaker 1 (26:23):
What in the world is is he seeing in the
Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Speaker 3 (26:28):
Couldn't tell you they were not on my board.
Speaker 1 (26:30):
Yeah, I don't know that I'm a Bears believer, yet.
Speaker 3 (26:34):
I had the Chiefs on my board ahead of the Buccaneers.
Speaker 1 (26:36):
Hikes, I don't know that I'm a big believer in
the Bears. But like I said, it's hard to win
the Super Bowl when you're having to play on the
road to plostseason. It's been done before, you know, there's
teams that have been on the post end. The Packers
were a six seed back in twenty ten and won
(26:57):
the whole thing. Five seeds have won it before. Every
seed has won it. But it's gonna be tough this year.
Speaker 2 (27:03):
If I took a team that was going to have
to win on the road, that team either has a
great quarterback or a great defense is how I kind
of treated.
Speaker 1 (27:10):
The draft, and the best teams had both. That's what
the Rams have in my opinion.
Speaker 3 (27:15):
Well, the defense got The defense wasn't great, but it
had a good second.
Speaker 1 (27:18):
That's the thing. And I've been saying this all long.
The front seven, especially the down linemen, are really good
for the Rams. The secondary not so much. If you
can protect the quarterback and the Lions for a lot
of the game did that yesterday. You can carve up
their secondary forty nine ers did that earlier this year.
(27:38):
The Colts, even though the Rams ended up winning the game,
did a lot of that in the game. So yeah,
it just depends on if they're getting their pass rush.
I think that's a big part of it. Because those
teams that secure home field advantage right now, those are
the ones gonna be That's why I'm gripping as a
(27:59):
Rams about this game this Thursday in Seattle. If they
win that game, they're going to win the West because
all they have after that are the Falcons and Cardinals.
Speaker 3 (28:06):
I couldn't believe Seattle fell to me fourth in the draft.
They're good.
Speaker 1 (28:09):
Yeah, whoever wins that game is going to be the
number one seed. That's right. And if you ask me
who I would have taken number one, I probably would
have taken Seattle and maybe five for a second, okay,
because I think Seattle's going to beat the Rams this week,
and if they do the Rams, you know, it drops
to that what is it? Five seed? I think right now,
if if you don't win the division, you could be
(28:32):
the one seed, or you could be the five seed.
If LA wins this week, they're going to be the one,
because they're going to beat the Falcons and the Cardinals
and they're going to be the one.
Speaker 2 (28:39):
You know what concerns me about Seattle, What's that they
can't run the ball. There's such a physical team, they
can't run the ball.
Speaker 1 (28:46):
Yeah, they try to just kind of even the game
they have with the Rams, they played it in the
phone booth. Remember they missed that field goal to try
to beat them there on the last play of the game.
Speaker 3 (28:57):
Their defense is really good.
Speaker 1 (28:58):
It's outstanding. So that's what I think the key is
in the NFC. Anyway, AFC a little more up for guys.
We'll talk more about that. But up next, we're bringing
in Conceivable here on a Monday afternoon on sports Radio
AM thirteen under the Zone in the iHeart Radio app.
(29:22):
Second hour of the program here on Sports Radio AM
thirteen under the Zone here on this Monday, Craig Way
alongside the producer Jake Erman, glad to have you with us.
It's your text a moment. I do want to do this.
Right out of the gate, we have four pairs of
tickets and then right Jake four four four pairs of
(29:43):
tickets for tomorrow night's Longhorn basketball I felt kind of
bad for some of you in the past, because a
lot of times the tickets just kind of landed in
our lap the day of a game where you had
very little notice, you know, like maybe three four hours
(30:04):
notice it the most to respond and a lot of
you know, folks make plans and stuff. And it is
also the holiday time of year right now, so sometimes
it doesn't work out for you or whatever. Maybe you
can't call in, somebody else winds up doing it, but
or I say call in doing the talk back to
make so eligible for the tickets. So I feel a
(30:27):
little better given that there is a one day advanced
notice here because the game's tomorrow night. But we have
four tickets, four pairs of tickets given and we give
away to this hour and to next hour, and the
way we're going to do it this hour is the
way we usually do it with our ticket giveaways, use
(30:48):
of the talkback microphone. We want to hear your dulca
tones when you hear your voice, not saying we're necessarily
going to play it on the air, although we have
the capability of doing that, but we're not necessarily doing That's,
by the way, if you ever just want to reach
out to this program. And you don't want to do
it on the text line, but you want to vent
your spleen, you want to talk to us, you can
(31:10):
do that. This is how you do it. Take your
smartphone if you haven't already done so, you download the
iHeartRadio app. Go to your app store. You'll see it iHeartRadio.
It's easy, it's free, really easy to do. You download it.
Then once you download it, in your search bar there
(31:30):
you search AM thirteen hundred zone. It pops straight up
when it gets there, pops up on AM thirteen hundred zone.
You're going to see two buttons there. One's a little
white triangular button that's to listen to what's going on
in the year at the time. But there's a red
button with a white microphone. You tap that button. Jake
is showing it right now to the camera. There. You
(31:52):
tap that red button with the white microphone, and that
activates our talkback feature, the talkback microphone, and you can
leave us up to a thirty second message. So if
you just want to say, you know, I had the Cowboys,
or dead in the water again, Jerry Jones, whatever you want.
Speaker 3 (32:05):
To say, that's fine. Sorry, that came from Cameron in Austin.
Speaker 1 (32:11):
I did. I didn't even ask him the day when
I saw I didn't even ask him about that. Not
that there's much use in asking him about that, but anyway,
you you can leave us a message. So in this case,
if you're interested in winning a pair of tickets to
(32:31):
tomorrow night's game, just be one of the first two,
the first two to activate the talk back feature and
let us know and say, hey, I want those tickets.
I'm Bob Smith or something like that. We've got your number, whatever,
and then we'll get it. Get in touch with you.
Speaker 2 (32:45):
By the way, I know, we've got a lot to
get to. I was pretty impressed by the Longhorns in Hartford.
Speaker 1 (32:51):
That's on that's on the docket to get to. Yeah. Good,
we're going to do that. So just be one of
the first two to say, hey, I'd like a pair
of tickets see the Longhorn game tomorrow night. Whoever the
first who are this, How we're gonna get it. We'll
let you know next hour when the time is to
activate that talkback feature. So there you go. Okay, And
(33:14):
and speaking of the Longhorns, yes, stood the ground played tough,
but as has been the case when they have lost
games like the Arizona State game, and it even really
the Duke game as well, less or less so with
(33:36):
the Virginia game because they were largely dominated in that
game by Virginia when they played them in the acc
SEC Challenge, but uh, the Duke game to some extent,
definitely the Arizona State game. And in the game on
Friday night at Connecticut, they had their chances. They had
they came down down the stretch, they had a chance,
(33:56):
had it cut to four, and had a chance to
get closer to that. A couple of free throws missed.
There was not a box out that happened. And give
Yukon credit man some of the ball some of those
makes Uh.
Speaker 10 (34:12):
That was that?
Speaker 1 (34:13):
That was amazing? Uh that that that shot hit at
the shot clock buzzer from about thirty five feet away,
turn around, desperation, even it goes in and then off
of Texas missing come down, they had another three and
that pretty much put it out of.
Speaker 2 (34:26):
What's not amazing is, yeah, driving right down the floor
for a rushed, difficult shot.
Speaker 3 (34:31):
Right after that, it's snowball.
Speaker 1 (34:32):
Yeah. They were down five at the time of the
first long range three and then the long runs missed
a shot on the other and then they come down
and hit the other three, and all of a sudden
you look up there down eleven again.
Speaker 3 (34:43):
As far as defensive efficiency, best game of the year.
Speaker 1 (34:47):
Yeah, to hold yukon the way they did. They they
played well in a lot of other areas. Sehn Miller
told us after the game. You know, of course, this
is a zero some busines and there's no no moral
victories anything like that. What you do take from it,
because I know a lot of people say, well, if
(35:07):
you lost, you lost, you don't take anything from it,
you move on. No, that's not true. You can learn
from the mistakes and the defeats. That's what you have
to take from it is the lesson, the opportunity to improve.
And so the next opportunity comes up tomorrow night against Lemoine,
and that'll be at seven o'clock. You'll hear right here
(35:27):
on thirteen under the zone getting at six thirty. So
that's that next action of the Texas women is coming on.
We're going to hear from Vic Shaeffer deck segment. Their
next game is on Wednesday night against Northwestern State. They're
twelve to zero and number two in the country and
looking really really good. It was I had to really
think back and sure enough, fun out for some research
(35:48):
the last time Texas beat Baylor as badly as they did,
and you've got to go back away. Yeah, I'd find that.
Speaker 2 (35:56):
I tried to look for that in my post game
hit and I couldn't get back far enough to find
one that was that.
Speaker 1 (36:01):
Was that what sided? Yeah? Absolutely, so we'll hear from
Vick Schaeffer coming up as well. On the text line
for those who were wanting to text in and again,
all you have to do is text the word Texas
followed by your questioner comment to eight one five three zero.
So you text the word Texas followed by your question
(36:22):
of comment to eight one five three zero. Standard messaging
and data rates may apply. Somebody asked, who is Jabbar
Jaluk Jabbar spelled like Kareem Abdul Jabbar, the first name,
last name Jluke j u l u k e Jabbard Jluke. Well,
(36:43):
he's the brand new associate head coach for offense and
running backs coach at the University of Texas, where was
he Florida thirteen years in the collegiate ranks as running
backs coach thirty years in the business overall last four years,
is Florida's associate coach for running backs. Prior to that,
he served in similar roles in Louisiana, Texas Tech. Also
(37:05):
coached at LSU in Louisiana Tech, and has spent the
first seventeen years of his career as a high school
coach in the state of Louisiana. And he said, well,
Florida was four and oh, they weren't that good. This
year at Jayden ball, we had a big game against
Texas by the way, second team All SEC honors. He
had eleven hundred seventy yards and eight touchdowns on the ground.
(37:29):
He ranked third in the SEC in both rushing yards
and rushing yards per game. He ranked fifteenth and sixteenth
respectively in those categories. So you know, he led the
team of one hundred and thirty three carries for six
hundred and seventy three yards and seven touchdowns.
Speaker 11 (37:47):
And he was.
Speaker 1 (37:49):
All SEC as a freshman a year ago. So jabbar
Ja Luke is the new running backs coach at the
University of Texas. Updated note on the portal Leongo La
foul is going into the portal. So he will not
be with the team in Orlando for the for the
(38:14):
cheese at Fiesta Bowl and not Fiesta excuse me, Citrus
Bowl on New Year's Eve afternoon. So it's one more
who will not be in the mix on that. This
this Bowl game is going to feature a mixture of veterans,
you know, like a Michael Taff. And congratulations to Michael
(38:35):
who won the Warfol Trophy over the weekend. And that's
for a combination of his football prowess, his academic excellence,
community service, things of that nature. So congratulations to Taff.
It'll be his final game as a collegian if you're
not counting the Senior Bowl, because he is going to
(38:55):
be in the Senior Bowl there and letting NFL scouts
take a look at him.
Speaker 3 (39:00):
First Longhorn to win it since sam Ocho.
Speaker 1 (39:03):
Yeah, Otcho was highly decorated there back in twenty two
thousand and nine and into twenty ten. I guess the
Ato family. So there'll be veterans like him and obviously
arch Manning. It'll be the veterans there, but there'll be
some younger guys who get some extended snaps because right now,
(39:27):
as we speak, right now, those guys, those young guys,
they're getting extended reps on the practice field as part
of the fifteen practices. The bowl practice is leading up
to this bowl game.
Speaker 12 (39:38):
So.
Speaker 1 (39:40):
It'll be interesting to see to see where it goes
with it.
Speaker 10 (39:44):
On that.
Speaker 1 (39:45):
Okay, coming up, we've got some other college football and
women's basketball notes. Get you, we'll hear from Vic Schaeffer
and when we continue here on sports Radio AM thirteen
under the zone of the iHeartRadio app. Passer kicked off
(40:07):
by George Leeper, Texas get transitions off the harp weep.
He threw to the fence, pumps to the cart, still
store off the glass.
Speaker 4 (40:17):
Welcome back to the Craig Way Show and the Voice
of the Longhorners. Craig Way followed Craig on social media
at Horn Voice.
Speaker 1 (40:26):
Yeah, it was a really impressive win for Texas over
a good Baylor team that came in at ten and one.
One loss was to IIWA, but Texas took command from
the outset. They were up sixteen points into the first quarter.
That was sloppy in the second quarter and Baylor cut
it to thirteen, but that was as close as they
could get. And then the long Runes blew the doors
(40:48):
off the rest of the first half, and then it
was just you know, the old high school football coach
would say, you it as soon as he get the sweeper.
Speaker 2 (40:56):
After that, well, well look credit Texas, right, Telia Scott
want to be most impactful players left the game right
when they cut it to about that Baker's dozen in
the middle of the second quarter, and Texas took full
advantage of that opportunity to go on a big run
before the end of the half.
Speaker 1 (41:10):
That's what they did. Yeah, they did. And the other
thing they did though, even when Talia Scott was out there,
they were turning it getting the Bears to turn it
over well big time they really started. They wound up
with thirty turnovers in the basketball game previous I was
twenty two. Yeah. Now the Madison Booker had another great game. Course,
(41:31):
she had the triple double the other night down in
the Valley and she at UTRGV. She had twenty seven
points and eight boards. I haven't seen it yet. I
cannot believe that anybody other than Madison Booker would be
the SEC Player of the Week. I haven't seen the
release yet, but I'm sure it's coming because I've seen
(41:53):
the men's released that she'll be the SEC player, and
I've heard her rumor she may wind up, you know,
earning one of the national Player of the Week honors,
and why not. I mean, all she did have score
fifty five points in two games and have a triple
double and all that kind of stuff. Jordan Lee also
was a big part of it. Hit four threes, nineteen
points and was right there as well to kind of
(42:14):
spread out Baylor a little more, and when they tried
to jam inside, they would kick it to Herne you
woul knock down at three. So impressive stuff. So after
the game, you know, we visit with both and we'll
hear from them coming up in the four o'clock hour.
But Vick Schaeffer in the postgame press conference after the game,
was asked for his review.
Speaker 8 (42:34):
Overall, I'm so proud of them for their energy, their
to effort, their toughness.
Speaker 12 (42:42):
I don't know how hard y'all to go.
Speaker 8 (42:44):
I don't think how hard you know how hard it
is to play the way we play with seven in
the rotation, Like what these kids are doing so precedented
in my mind, this one thing to play and just
standing around at two three zone playing no fewness defense.
It's another thing to be in the press, full core.
(43:09):
You know, know that Richardson's forty minutes at Hell.
Speaker 1 (43:12):
I mean, that's what it is.
Speaker 12 (43:13):
And so I'm super proud of my kids, Like their
toughness through.
Speaker 8 (43:19):
This stretch of injuries has just been it's really been special,
and I admire them. I have so much respect and
admiration for them for what they're doing right now because
I know how hard it is. And there's none of
the one and an old mask for anything different about
(43:39):
the only thing they've asked for is this morning.
Speaker 12 (43:41):
We didn't get up that she ra for twelve o'clock games.
Speaker 1 (43:44):
We'd get up for a little bit.
Speaker 8 (43:46):
Early, but uh, we had a little trade off on
that the name held up there into the bargain and so.
And then secondly, Miss Butler's really good, Like we played
really good to them, playing so hard and four sturdy
turnowers we had nineteen steals. I mean that's how hard
we played against a top twelve, top thirteen team. I
(44:10):
think it was really good. Nick, he's a great coach
and there they're really good players, like I told Bugs
and Foplroyd like I'm doing, like I hope I will
see them anymore. I've seen them plenty in my career,
and you know, those two have just been so tough.
Speaker 1 (44:26):
And then you know.
Speaker 8 (44:29):
Jenna is going through what Rory went through a year ago,
and that kid's a tough competitor, Like she's really tough competitor.
Speaker 11 (44:38):
And so.
Speaker 8 (44:40):
Just a lot of respect for their program, and again
for Nicky and her and her staff. Obviously, Johnny's somebody
that's family with me. We've been through a lot together,
lots of fully, lots of winning, and so but man,
I thought our kids executed today, thought our half court
execution was outstanding.
Speaker 12 (45:00):
At seven turnovers total, it was really really good.
Speaker 1 (45:04):
And again.
Speaker 8 (45:08):
A lot of times if they'll just excute and get
the ball to the right people at the right time,
it just makes all the difference in the world. Jordan
doing four for set of it from three, it just
changes our team. And when you got Rory and Booker again,
a lot of teams are gonna have one person that
can defend a great careber player.
Speaker 12 (45:27):
Some might have two. I don't know too many of
that have three.
Speaker 8 (45:32):
And when you play us right now, you've got to
guard all three again, s kIPS and then are bigs
do a nice job inside Bray and Kyle and my
two headed monster. I thought Taya Justice did a good
job today, played really hard, did a good job. But
I thought Taya came in and kind of changed things
that first quarter and wrecked their offense, wouldn't let the
(45:53):
four player catch it for them, and then once we
got that stopped, it was really kind of a struggle
for them. So, uh, both those fours, they've got their
own strengths and glad to have them as well at
that spot.
Speaker 12 (46:05):
So it's really a great win for us.
Speaker 8 (46:08):
Again, his kiss played really well today and I'm super
super proud of them. We've had to navigate this now
for a while, so it's nothing new for us. But
as you can see, they embrace it, they love it,
and you know, I think what you saw out there
for forty minutes is just toughness, and they know I
(46:30):
am ultimately the proudest where I think they are top
and stays going to aggressive and that does the same
thing about your joke shop.
Speaker 1 (46:39):
No it doesn't. And Vic told me before the game
he was kind of concerned about that shoot around thing.
He's it's really interesting what they do, and I explained
the routine last week one day, I guess it was
(46:59):
one of talking about the ice cream and everything. Yeah, right, neat, Yeah, Well,
as far as the shoot around stuff goes, the way
they like to do it is if they're playing a
late afternoon or an evening game. What they like to
do is if they're on the road, they like to
(47:22):
when they land, they go to the hotel and they
drop off the bags and they go to dinner at
like a local restaurant or something that's been arranged and
there's a seating area like in the back or you know,
different room or something like that, and the team eats together,
and then they go to the arena for an evening
(47:44):
practice slash shoot around. They'll do that and then they
do the ice cream afterwards, you know, that sort of thing.
But sometimes if they've got an early game and this
is one of the earlier times at high noon, they
won't have a shoot around on the day of the game.
(48:05):
Now Vic likes him to have a shoot around, but
he says more important his players liked the shoot around.
There was a time they had a game in West
Virginia three or four years ago and it was like
one o'clock in the afternoon one o'clock tip, but they
weren't going to have access to the arena floor because
West Virginia was going to do their shoot around around nine.
The only way they could do it was if they
(48:26):
went at seven am or even it might have been
six thirty. They had to get up. I remember they
were going to get up at five thirty in the morning,
and I asked him. I said they didn't. They didn't
grumble about that, and he goes, no, they wanted to
do that. He said. I told him, we don't have
to go as early and said, no, no, we like
(48:46):
it better. We can get get our shots up. And
they won handily that day, but he said that's more
on them. But then he kind of insisted this weekend,
we're not going to it's a noon tip. He said,
I'd have to get him out of bed early. He's
a little bit short on his roster right now due
to injury. Let's just go ahead and get rest. So
they did go in Saturday night. I went over there after.
(49:08):
I called the high school football game for television number
that we zipped over to Fort Worth and went in
in part to set up the broadcast equipment. So I
didn't have to worry about with an early tip on Sunday,
go in set up the equipment and watch practice, and
they did so. They shot the night before, but they
did not shoot morning of the game because he didn't
(49:31):
want to take him over there too early. He said
the rest was more of a value to him, and
it ended up not being a factor anyway, since they
blew out a Baylor. So he was asked in the
press conference, his team's twelve to zero. They're number two
in the country. They've handled all of these other teams
Ashley ranked teams. They've beaten South Carolina, they've beaten UCLA,
(49:55):
they've beaten North Carolina, they've beaten Baylor. So they've beaten
these four oponents, uh Richmond two five ranked. Yeah, I
was I was going to say four in the top fifteen,
but yes, five ranked opponents overall. So the question for
Vic has he established his team as truly elite given
(50:15):
what they've done to this point in the season.
Speaker 12 (50:18):
You know, I'm not gonna I don't. I don't think
that's true right now.
Speaker 8 (50:22):
I think what we've done is we've navigated a really
tough schedule.
Speaker 12 (50:26):
I think these kids have been incredibly tough throughout that, and.
Speaker 8 (50:33):
You know, I think there's you know, there's more than
one team that's that's out there or several of us
and uh and so again I think brief this this
team is I think they know they got a chance.
I think they know there this could be a special group,
and so I think they embraced that because I see
(50:55):
it every day of practice. You know, I see them
each and every day, and they're pretty good preparation. They're
better on some games than others, and you could probably
figure that out. Their attention when somebody's in the top
twenty five is the way different than some team that
I ain't at the top twenty time. But you know,
I don't have a hard time with this team Keble
(51:18):
at Hungary. And that's the credit to their parents. These
kids are grateful, they're humble, they play the game the
right way, and so you know, for us right now,
it's just one game at a time and you know,
we'll just let it all play out. But they certainly
navigated a very difficult line conference schedule today.
Speaker 1 (51:40):
Yeah, so they have been good to this point, but
again it is just December. I was good to see
Tayo Sidbury get back on the floor. She didn't banged
up these ankles, took a bad cut above her eye,
was held out of the game at UTRGV. So she
gave a really good account of herself yesterday. And he
was asked, you know, to tell you transferring from Boston College,
(52:03):
is this the type of effort and performance you look
for in transfers?
Speaker 8 (52:08):
Absolutely love it, I mean love it from her. You know,
here's some thing, y'all. And this is this is not
just in basketball. This is in all sports, or when
you look through out of the country and you see
what's going on, especially with coaches, when you take a
kid that's minner than another program, I don't care what
(52:28):
sport it is.
Speaker 12 (52:30):
You can look at their stats on you want. In fact, hey, yeah,
they're they're great, y'a. The add god, when they come.
Speaker 8 (52:36):
To play for you and they're not used to playing, blocking, cutting,
whatever it is, when they're not used to doing it
your way, your way struggles, if that makes sense. And
so for Taya, y'all won't meet a nicer, sweeter kid.
She's smiling always. But I told her that they before
(53:00):
she walked down a locker, I said, you leave that
smile and I need the monster, you know, and she's
a great kid, and she's learning how to play our way,
and she she came off the bench that I saw
what needed to be done out there and did it
and it really affected the dayame as you said.
Speaker 12 (53:19):
So again another she's just a great kid. Well, she's
the all time leading score in the history of Utah
high school basketball. I keep going to her, Gordon, maybe
keep young better.
Speaker 8 (53:31):
You're too good, like be aggressive, because she's obviously in
high school was that way. I don't know what happened
the first three years of college. But here there are
several things that you can do in our system that
we needs you do. And on boat fence and so
really acting for her. She's such a great kid. But
you know, again we can get her doing what she
(53:53):
did today. Her Injustice both that's another two that administrate
at the four that I like to have.
Speaker 1 (53:59):
Yeah, Justice Carlton also contributing there. All right, we've got
some pro football notes we get to when we continue
on thirteen. Under the zone. This one's going to take
me back.
Speaker 3 (54:19):
That's what I was hoping for.
Speaker 1 (54:21):
Yeah, it does. If you were in college as I
was in the eighties. This was one of the great
one hit Wonders eighteen eighty two. A flock of Seagulls
I Ran So Far Away, which was put in parentheses
(54:44):
as do you ever seed the dude that is the
lead singer of this band? No, check out his hair?
You get a chance?
Speaker 3 (54:51):
Does he have a flock of seagulls growing up?
Speaker 6 (54:52):
There?
Speaker 1 (54:55):
Put this way? Until I got a haircut this morning,
My hair when i'd get up in the morning looked
like this game's hair. In fact, there's a great line.
Think of pulp fix. You see it now, see the
guy's hit white hair just out in all these different directions, right.
Speaker 3 (55:11):
I see it styled up almost like he's got some antlers.
Speaker 1 (55:14):
Yeah, there's a great line. I think it's in pulp
fiction where there's a guy that has really crazy hair
or something like that, and one of the guys turns
to him. I can't remember if it was John Travolter
or somebody else goes, hey, flock and seagulls. So anyway,
it was a big hit. I never got that reference. Yeah,
that's good. Yeah, a big hit. They're only big hit.
(55:40):
Let's yes, we must. Let's turn our attention to the
Dallas Cowboys. You know it was a game where there
was I think a lot of hope. There were a
lot of people were hoping that he would that they
would be able to step up make some plays. Dak
Prescott would have another big offensive game, but their offense
is tailed off and certainly did so last night against
(56:02):
the Viking team that had pretty good defense but virtually
no offense. They found offense against the Dallas defense, and
then they found some defense and put pressure on Dak
Prescott throughout the game. They couldn't get a running game
going and couldn't get the passing game going. There the
end results of thirty four to twenty three loss, Brian
Schottenheimer was asked because they had some drives working, they
(56:22):
had to settle for field goals some three times.
Speaker 6 (56:24):
And then.
Speaker 1 (56:26):
How many times has Brandon Aubrey missed two field goal
attempts in the game? One, one other time, one other time.
I was guessing the one was last night. How about
I'm surprised at you not remembering he missed two at
Washington last year?
Speaker 2 (56:42):
Right, that was the year Washington had, right, it was
the year of improbable things happening.
Speaker 1 (56:48):
Yeah, yeah, so that was one of the things. Anyway,
Schttenneimer was asking, you know, with all that other kind
of stuff, what kept his team from being able to finish.
Speaker 13 (56:59):
Drives third down? You know when you go two and
twelve on third down. I thought they did a good
job with their blitz packages. They has confused a little bit.
That starts with me, got to do a better job
with that. Give coach Flores and his staff some credit.
But comes down to third down. Now, we're pretty good
on third down or fourth down, but you know, it
can't go two for twelve situation. We didn't play very
(57:20):
good tonight offensively, We weren't very good on third down,
and we weren't very good in the red zone. And
that's why you see a struggle in the second half.
And that's kind of where it starts.
Speaker 1 (57:31):
Yeah, there are those of us that are very unhappy,
unhappy that the Vikings took George Pickens out of the game,
pretty much took him, neutralized him. And those of us
had on the fantasy team could have used some contributions.
Wasn't happening, Craig.
Speaker 3 (57:47):
We all could have used some different things this weekend,
all right, Yeah, I.
Speaker 1 (57:51):
Could have used some more from Pickens. Didn't get it,
but shot Mambers has. What did the Vikings do to
take Pickens away? Yeah?
Speaker 13 (58:00):
Again, a lot of cover too, you know a lot
of different technique things. They change their coverage up a lot.
But again, there was a there was a plan to
try to limit our explosives. And I think he had
six targets and only three three catches and that's not enough.
And that starts with me and the offensive staff. We
gotta find ways to get him the ball better.
Speaker 1 (58:20):
Yeah. Uh, there was that point where the Cowboys tried
a fifty nine yard field goal and it was a
missed by Aubrey. So you know the question is going
to come from the reporters there, did he did he
second guess? Is he second guessing himself over running Aubrey
out there to try the fifty nine yarder?
Speaker 11 (58:36):
No?
Speaker 13 (58:36):
You know, I actually said it in there again we're
spoiled with Brandon Aubrey. You know what I'm saying. What
a great player. But No, felt really good about it.
You know, he's he's such a great player. I had
no question in my mind he was gonna make it.
And I think I feel good about that decision.
Speaker 1 (58:55):
All right now, the three games remaining, I think it's
safe to say the playoff hopes are on life support
of nothing else. Yeah, I said life support at this point.
So what you're saying there's a chance. Well, he was asked,
what is the big picture goal now?
Speaker 13 (59:15):
With three games remaining, the goal is to wake up tomorrow,
will watch the film that night, wake up tomorrow, coach
these guys up, and we're going to control. We can control,
you know. And disappointing, we didn't find a way to
win this game. I knew this would be a game
like that. I wasn't surprised by that. Kevin's a great coach,
Brian's a great coach, and unfortunately this game game came
(59:36):
down to, you know, the fact of our uh inability
really in the red zone and some of the situational stuff.
Speaker 5 (59:42):
We weren't very good on defense.
Speaker 1 (59:43):
On fourth down.
Speaker 13 (59:44):
We forced i think three fourth downs and they converted
a bunch of of those. And the end of the day,
when you play, you know, a team like this, you
got to be, you know, really on top of your
situational stuff, and we weren't.
Speaker 1 (59:57):
So, you know, things are getting very dicey for them
now now they're six seven and one. How surprised is
he to see his team back blow the fire. I mean,
I don't like it, obviously.
Speaker 13 (01:00:13):
I mean, I'm disappointed we didn't play well against Detroit again.
Speaker 1 (01:00:19):
You know, I really do think this.
Speaker 13 (01:00:20):
I think we're beating ourselves quite a bit, and that's
that starts with us as a coaching staff. The players
are playing hard, but again, you give up big plays
and you kick field goals. We kicked field goals today.
I mean, we were what two for five and they
were three for four and they're and you lose by
eight points and you're like, damn. But you know, we
never got to the point where I felt like, you know,
(01:00:42):
we were able to really just kind of seize momentum.
There wasn't a momentum changing play in any regard other
than probably the interception early in the game. But you know,
you know, you drop two games in a row, and
you know, you dust yourself off and you get back
to work. We play a really good football team in
here next week. So we'll get back to work and
make some of the adjustments we've got to make.
Speaker 1 (01:01:04):
Yeah, I got to try to do that before you
can think about any kind of postseason thing. How did
he discuss this defeat with the team.
Speaker 13 (01:01:14):
Yeah, today, I really just wanted to hit him with
the with the facts. I mean, you know, they're grown men.
You know they can take it.
Speaker 4 (01:01:19):
You know.
Speaker 13 (01:01:20):
I certainly threw myself in there, and why what I
did not do a good job of I kind of
started with that. To be honest with you, I will
always do that. It's always going to start with me
and the things that I messed up and didn't do
very well. And Brian Flores was better than me today.
And I won't sleep very good tonight, but I promise
you I'll wake up tomorrow. I'm gonna work my ass
off and I'm gonna figure it out.
Speaker 1 (01:01:39):
Yeah, plain and simple. You just find a way to
improve it, to get better with it. One other thing, Yeah,
excuse me, a little tickle in the throat. Uh. He
was asked if why don't you well, I clear my throat.
(01:02:03):
Tell folks what this final cut is about. Yeah, Well,
it's actually complicated cut.
Speaker 2 (01:02:06):
It's about Trayvon Diggs, who told the coaches in the
lead up to this matchup Craig that he was okay
to play, and yet it was a coach's decision obviously
that still held him out. This is a topic we
touched on with Tommy Yarish when he was on the
show this Friday. So the question was posed, what are
you not seeing from Trayvon Diggs that's keeping him from
from cracking the lineup?
Speaker 13 (01:02:27):
Yeah, different things, consistency, you know, I think I've been
very honest about that. There's with all of our players,
there's things that they need to do from a consistency
standpoint to make us feel good about, you know, putting
him out there. And again, I know he felt like
he wanted to play, and he felt like he was
ready to play, and like I said, you know, we
made a decision as a as a team, and I
(01:02:49):
made a decision and we won a different direction.
Speaker 5 (01:02:51):
So we'll see how this week.
Speaker 1 (01:02:52):
Goes, all right. So there it is, playing and simple
there from the head coach. And at six seven and one,
there's still listed as the in the Hunt group. They are,
but so were the Dolphins who were six and seven
going into the game with the Steelers tonight, and we
know that's probably not going to happen.
Speaker 2 (01:03:11):
With a win, the Dolphins playoff odds would not change
still less than one percent.
Speaker 1 (01:03:16):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, exactly. And so the Cowboys are at
one percent.
Speaker 3 (01:03:19):
They're also at less than less than one.
Speaker 1 (01:03:23):
Percent, so oh goodness. Yeah, yeah, one thing. And like
I said, I was listening to the broadcast driving back
from last night, and and as I was listening to
the broadcast, they got to the tail end of the
game with the Vikings won, and uh, Brad Sham and
(01:03:43):
Baby Bloffenberg were talking about Yeah, there was all that
talk about, hey, they might be able to get the playoffs.
He goes, and I think it was Baby said, and
it was fun to talk about that for a while,
Like babies, I know, it was fun to talk about it,
but there's not much point in talking about it now.
Now it's about just trying to finish. When there it
(01:04:03):
went out, when the last three out, they finished ninety
seven and one, They finished on the plus side of
the five hundred mark, and you try to take it
up to another because the odds are against them being
able to get in there, even as some of the
other teams are falling back to them a little bit.
It doesn't look like they can climb high enough to
get there. All right, we'll be back to wrap up
hour number two. I'm thirteen under the zone.
Speaker 11 (01:04:23):

Speaker 4 (01:06:00):
Audio Visual Consultation Studio, Sports Radio thirteen hundred of the Zone,
KD E. T. A. M. Austin Guaranteed Human You're home
for the Horse. It's the craig Way Show with the
voice of the Texas Longhorns and Hall of Fame Broadcasting
(01:06:23):
craig Way.
Speaker 1 (01:06:33):
Third and final hour of the programming here on Sports
Radio AM thirteen under the Zone. Craig Way alongside the
producer Kay Carman, glad to have you with us. We'll
go up to five o'clock, then Camino and Rich Fox
Sports Radio tomorrow we'll be here and then afterwards we
have Texas and O's at I believe that set five
(01:06:57):
is it runs five to five thirty.
Speaker 3 (01:06:58):
I think it's right after our yep.
Speaker 1 (01:07:01):
Texas and O's if you haven't heard it yet, it's
a program talking lots of different long orange sports with
former great long worn athletes and some that weren't that great,
but they're better at it on the radio talking. So
Texas and O's tomorrow and then of course the Long
Worn men's basketball game is tomorrow night at seven o'clock.
(01:07:23):
Texas has two games remaining before the Christmas break, both
at home. The women have one home game remaining, that's
Wednesday night at Northwestern State. Then they go to Brookings,
South Dakota to play South Dakota State on Sunday afternoon,
(01:07:46):
and that's their final game before Christmas. The Long Worn
men will play Tomorrow night against Lamoinne, and then next
Monday night they'll play Maryland Eastern Shore, which is d
one program. It's in the meac Hey you're from up
that way. You know where Princess and Maryland is. That'll
(01:08:06):
be across the Bay bridge from Yeah, it's on the
what the del Marva Peninsula call it back up there.
I did that one time. I had my son with
me and drove. We went across that bridge there to
Annapolis across the bay. I guess that's pretty high that
thing gets up. That's elevated up there. It's higher than
(01:08:26):
any of the flyovers you'll see around here.
Speaker 2 (01:08:28):
It can make even the most confident explorers kind of
gulped a little.
Speaker 1 (01:08:32):
Bit a little bit, you know why, because when you turn,
you see it from a distance in the span ef it,
but then when you turn to go on the bridge,
you can't see the other side of it. It looks
like you're just gonna go straight up and drive off
into the Chesapeake Bay. But anyway on the other side
of that and then back down the backside the del
Marva Peninsula. Princess Anne, Maryland or University of Maryland Eastern
(01:08:56):
Shore is. So they play them next Monday, and this
is going to get into what we were talking about.
Aout the tickets here next Monday, and I would imagine
that we'll probably have some tickets to give away. But
that's going to be one of those deals where it's
you know, late notice, because we'll be giving it away
(01:09:18):
on Monday, unless they give you something to give away
on Friday, Jake, I'm not sure if that'll be the case,
but on Monday they'd probably be. Or Texas has this
deal going on right now because school is out, the
semester's over. I think final exams are done during this week,
like middle of the week, and they will make seats
(01:09:44):
available where the students usually sit in the corral, so
you have a chance to buy, you know, download seats
at a pretty good price for that if you want
up wanting to buy some tickets. And that Monday game
against Maryland Eastern Shore will be one of those games.
(01:10:06):
So in fact, I think the game tomorrow night is
going to be one of those games as well against Lemoyne,
but certainly against the US Maryland Eastern Shore. That'll be
the case on Monday. Now, as I mentioned, you know,
we pretty regularly give away tickets to men's and women's
basketball games here on the Zone, and going into today,
(01:10:30):
I did say we're going to give away four pairs
to people to call in. Here's an example of what
we're saying, I say call in, it's not really a
call in. It is and it isn't. You're not dialing
up a phone. What you're doing is downloading the iHeartRadio
app onto your smartphone. To some people, when you just
(01:10:51):
say those words you download the app, it sounds kind
of daunting. It's not. It's easy because the whole thing
it's this app store. You click it, then there's a
little search party, go iHeartRadio, and it pops up and
it's free, and then you hit download and then it's free.
You're double click to install. It comes down and it's free.
And then so there it is on your phone. Then
(01:11:12):
you do a search for AM thirteen under the zone.
It pops right up, and then you press a little
red button that's got a white microphone in it. That's
the talk back, and then you just leave us a
message up to thirty seconds telling us your name and
that you like the tickets. Here's an example of a
guy who's going to win tickets today. So let's hear
(01:11:33):
this one.
Speaker 9 (01:11:34):
I just activated my iHeart I'd love to get two
tickets to the game.
Speaker 1 (01:11:40):
My wife yells louder than I do.
Speaker 4 (01:11:44):
The name is Danny Southpors.
Speaker 9 (01:11:47):
Hook him on.
Speaker 1 (01:11:48):
Way to go, Danny, you're getting tickets. Our people will
get in touch with your people. That's right, We'll get
in touch with you. So that's an example. You don't
even have to go that long if you don't want
to say, hey, my name's whatever. You know, Joe Thomas,
I'd like two tickets of the game. So I've come
out of retirement from the Cleveland Browns, right, So I
(01:12:09):
held back two pairs of tickets, and we're gonna do
it the same way. So the first two people to
say they want the tickets, all you have to do again,
download the free iHeartRadio app. Then you search AM thirteen
under the zone listen. No offense to Danny, but it
(01:12:31):
sounds like, you know, if he could figure it out,
you can figure out, right. And I don't mean that
as an insult to Danny. I just mean because he
said I downloaded my iHeart, you know, well I got
where you were coming from on that, Danny. Congratulations. So
and Danny would probably tell you, hey, if I can
do it, you can do it. It's easy.
Speaker 2 (01:12:47):
Are you good with technology? Would you con see yourself
pretty solid with it?
Speaker 1 (01:12:52):
Ask my kids. They'll probably tell you not so much.
There's some things I've bastard. Some it's taken me a
while longer, So it depends on what it is. My
girlfriend thinks I'm bad with technology. See, I'm really good
at like setting up equipment to do a broadcast game broadcast. Sure,
the familiarity with the equipment and all that kind of stuff,
(01:13:13):
and you have to do it, to do it yesterday
and for worth. Because when we do the women's games,
we don't travel an engineer. The men's games are on
the network and it's a little more complex setup, so
we travel an engineer and that's Cameron Parker. But when
it's a women's road game, we're on our own. Roger
Wawlas be the first to tell you that he is
far from a technological expert. And I told him, dude,
(01:13:35):
if you have any questions, call me or call camp.
And Roger is master of the art of taking pictures
of his setup, going what is missing here or what
am I doing wrong here? And it's usually like one
little thing, I'll just do plug that there instead of there,
oh yeah, boom, and then he knocks it out and
it's fine. I said, none wrong with that I need
review sometimes, but I don't know when it comes to
(01:13:58):
other things. How technology logically sound, I am, I would
imagine are pretty good at it, even though your girlfriend
says you're not.
Speaker 2 (01:14:06):
I think my problem is not a technology problem, but
a patience problem.
Speaker 1 (01:14:10):
Okay.
Speaker 2 (01:14:11):
If I'm a little if it's taking longer for me
to figure out, then I think it should she hears
about it, and that's why, Well, you're bad with technology. No,
I'm just a little impatient.
Speaker 1 (01:14:23):
Okay, all right, Yeah, there you go. That's that's the
way to learn about it anyway. So that's it. Just
the next two people will do that, you know, to
reach us via the talkback feature, we'll get a pair
of tickets to tomorrow night's game between Texas and Lamoine,
and like I said, probably there will be more to
(01:14:44):
give away for the final home game before Christmas next
Monday against Maryland Eastern Shore. I would say probably on that.
But they're also offering that deal, like I said, where
you can buy tickets down in the Corralar area where
the students because schools out, so you could buy tickets
downer and have really good download seats for that. And
(01:15:06):
I think that's going to go all the way into
the start of conference play. Because Mississippi State the conference
opener is January third, school still out, so it's not
just non conference teams. I think it'll be that way
for conference games as well. So that's that's pretty cool
college football notes. We we had mentioned, you know when
(01:15:26):
we when we did the text line, and I said, well,
we'll always mention that there's some other things. This is
not only holiday season, it's portal season. And yes, some
long ones are are entering the transfer portal. C J.
Baxter one of those, Kinnor Strow. One of those obviously
(01:15:53):
going on to prepare for the NFL Draft is Anthony Hill.
So there's some roster attrition before the bowl game. Nebraska's
losing its quarterback. Dila Roola is going to enter the
portal when it opens on January second, has two more
seasons of eligibility, supposedly since he's seeking a program where
(01:16:15):
he can thrive and best harness his potential.
Speaker 3 (01:16:18):
His earning potential. Yes, well, I actually can understand this
for Riola.
Speaker 2 (01:16:23):
Nebraska in his career there has not had a good
offensive line in terms of pass protection. Yeah, so you
can understand the frustration if you take all the money
out of it.
Speaker 1 (01:16:33):
Yep, yep. You could make the same argument about Florida
and DJ Lagway. Lagway from Willis is entering the portal.
He said, I'm truly grateful for the opportunity to have
been part of such an incredible program here at the
University of Florida. After much prayer, reflection, thoughtful consideration, I
decided to enter the transfer portal.
Speaker 2 (01:16:54):
You know, on Texas Football was reporting that new long
worn running back coach Jabbar Juluke helped recruit.
Speaker 1 (01:16:58):
Him to Florida. He did, Yeah, he absolutely did.
Speaker 11 (01:17:03):
So.
Speaker 1 (01:17:04):
D J Lagway is entering the transfer portal. He's he's
leaving Tay who's not leaving Kate Klubnick, the west Lake product.
He is going to play in the Pinstripe Bowl for
Clemson against Penn State. According to Dabosweeney said that today,
more than two dozen others will miss the game.
Speaker 2 (01:17:27):
Oh, that's the opt out Bowl because it's the preseason
playoff predicted teams that fell well short.
Speaker 1 (01:17:33):
Yeah, does so. But Clubnick. No, he's gonna play, and
he's considered to be a potential early quarterback selection in
the NFL draft. He's going to play, so tailback Adam Randall,
center Ryan Linthecom, tackle Blake Miller are also planning to
(01:17:56):
play in that game, and Clubnik also accepted an invitation
to play in the East West Shrine Bowl. One of
the guys who's not going to play for them Antonio Williams,
the wide receiver. He's announced his intention to enter the
NFL Draft. That's different than Portal. How about Peter Woods, Yeah,
he's not going to be there. On defense, this is
(01:18:18):
who they're going to be without Avian Terrell or Terrell,
Peter Woods, t J Parker, Domanic Kate part starting safety
Khalil Barnes, who plans to transfer, is going to opt
out of the Bowl.
Speaker 3 (01:18:30):
Potential Texas target.
Speaker 1 (01:18:32):
Yeah. Well, those other guys, those other guys that I
mentioned are all planning to go to the draft or
you know, hope they in increase their draft status. In all,
Dabbo says Clemson is going to be without seventeen players
due to injury and another nine who are opting out.
(01:18:53):
He said, it's a long list, but nobody cares. So
tight end Ian Shefflin, the star on their basketball team,
is no longer on the team. He had off the
field issues offseason dui arrest and finished with just two
catches for ten yards. So there it is. So there's Clemson.
Speaker 2 (01:19:15):
I think has a long postseason win streak, right, thirteen
or fourteen years where they won at least one postseason game.
Speaker 1 (01:19:22):
Yeah, right, counting the Bulls.
Speaker 3 (01:19:24):
So Dabbo knows how to keep his team focused when
it comes to these less meaningful ball games.
Speaker 1 (01:19:30):
That's correct. As we know, Colin Klein left Texas A
and m their offensive coordinator to become the head coach
at Kansas State, so he's going to take over it now.
Klein is remaining with the Aggies through the playoff. So
this Saturday they have that noon game. I guess it
(01:19:53):
is against Miami. Yeah, they're playing at noon. I think
it might be. Is it eleven? It might be, It
might be eleven, it might be it's early. It's first
game of the day. Put it that way. Mike Elko
today press conference said that Klein will continue to call plays,
having said that he's promoting Holman Wiggins to offensive coordinator.
(01:20:18):
So Wiggins had spent five seasons at Alabama's wide receivers coach,
then served as a head coach, assistant head coach of
offense for his final three seasons there, so Holman Wiggins
is being elevated. He was the co offensive coordinator, he
was the wide receivers coach being there. So anyway, early
kickoff Saturday, eleven am the Aggies Kyle Field.
Speaker 2 (01:20:42):
So, I mean, that's the best game of the day
up first, at least on paper, with Jilne and Ole Miss,
followed by James Madison and Organ.
Speaker 1 (01:20:49):
Yeah, it could be two blowouts. Ad to that, I
was kind of surprised that Alabama Oklahoma was Friday night. However,
that's the TNT game if I remember correctly, so was
their selection. That'll be ABC with thatler at Herb Street.
Alabama Oklahoma.
Speaker 3 (01:21:05):
The TNT games are the last two with both of
the G five teams. Oo, okay, all right, Well TNT
not a fan of the ACC tie breakers.
Speaker 1 (01:21:16):
No, no, for sure, so so that's weird. Well, anyway,
that's that's the Friday game. And by the way, Mario Christibal,
the head coach Miami, thinks they're going to get their nickelback. Hey,
Ante Scott back for the playoff game, said he's looking great.
(01:21:39):
We'll see what it looks like later in the week.
He missed their last three games of the season with
a foot injury, but he'd started the first nine games
of the season, looked really good before the injury. And
now Christa Ball says he's okay or should be okay.
And we were talking about this Alabama Oklahoma job okay
(01:22:00):
on the game and all the talk is about the job,
not the game, the job availability or the job market
for Kaylan Debor. So there's people talking about that. And
Kaylen Bore was not happy about that at a news
conference today and he said he does not. I think
(01:22:25):
it's important that they say it in this particular context. However,
it kind of sends up a red flag when they do.
He said, here's the quote. He does not plan to
hold discussions related to open jobs elsewhere. Does not plan
to do that. Do you want to hear some of it. Yeah,
(01:22:46):
let's hear from Kaylen Man.
Speaker 12 (01:22:48):
Come on, Nick, all right.
Speaker 15 (01:22:50):
I put a statement out yesterday because I just, first
of all, our guys handled distractions phenomenally.
Speaker 1 (01:22:56):
It's been that way all season long.
Speaker 15 (01:22:57):
They continue to do that, and so but I also,
you know, knew that yesterday and today was pretty important.
I wasn't going to see until today, Uh, to address it.
So that's why I put that out there. A lot
of the same things I said before, you know, a
couple of weeks ago and asked really the same question.
Speaker 1 (01:23:12):
Just you know, feel completely supported.
Speaker 15 (01:23:15):
My family loves living here, just all the things that
we continue to build on, love the progress. Haven't talked
with anyone, no plans of talking with anyone. So just
I think that's a you know, a lot of what
I said a couple of weeks ago and continues to
be the same thing. Feel strong about it, and our guys.
If there's been any distraction, I haven't seen it, haven't
(01:23:35):
felt it. And so I'm really proud of the way
they've handled whatever noise is out there. And again we've
probably all season long, I've dealt with enough noise to
where it doesn't surprise me on how they handle this.
Speaker 1 (01:23:47):
Yeah, and if you're saying, well, what job, well, Michigan,
it's the one that comes to mind now that Penn
State has been filled, now that most of the other
high profile jobs have been filled. And as I said,
I and I believe this, it's very important to say
(01:24:08):
I have no plans to do it, if only to
leave a door open to say plans do change unless
you're completely galvanized the fact that quote unquote I'm not
going anywhere. I'm not leaving, like Sark said. You know, otherwise,
if you're still trying to keep an option open, whether
(01:24:29):
it's a college gig or the NFL, it's probably important
to say the words I have no plans to do.
That doesn't mean that you wouldn't necessarily look at something
on down the line and maybe wind up leaving, but
at least no one can call you out for being
a liar by saying I'm not going anywhere and then
(01:24:50):
you go. So he said I have no plans to
seek any other things, and so you have to take
him into his word for that right now, all right,
Coming up next, we'll talk some more of basketball, both
the men's and women's variety. When we continue on Sports
Radio AM thirteen under the zone of the iHeartRadio app
(01:25:11):
there's a steal by Carlton off the in bounced paths
across the floor, Lee measures a free and knocks it down.
Speaker 13 (01:25:17):
I'm telling you that Jordan Lee just continues to make
impact plays on both ends of the floor.
Speaker 4 (01:25:23):
Back to the Craig Way Show, connect with Craig through
the text line by text team zone to age one
three zero, followed by your message standard message and data
rates may apply.
Speaker 1 (01:25:35):
That's got to be the first ever known usage of
a sports highlight, or at least in Texas Longhorns highlight
with Billy Joel's zen Ze Bar. Hey, I didn't want
Billy getting in the way of the call. Sounds like
you found an instrumental version of it. That's exactly right, great,
(01:25:58):
great tune, and he's sit in concert every time he
does it.
Speaker 3 (01:26:01):
Only on the Craig Ways Show combining Longhorn Sports with
Billy Joel.
Speaker 1 (01:26:04):
Yeah, there you go. I mention that these tickets that
you'd have an opportunity they're called holiday hoops if you
wind up buying those that are sitting down low where
the students do in the corral area, and University wants
you to know holiday hoops tickets are available right now
(01:26:25):
during this holiday season. Texas women are going headlong into
the holiday season with a full head of steam. They
blasted Baylor yesterday afternoon in Fort Worth eighty nine to
fifty four, and they led by sixteen at the end
of the first quarter. Got a little sloppy in the
second quarter still played level basketball, and the second quarter
(01:26:50):
led by sixteen and a half and then just completely
blew the doors off the rest of the way. Jordan
Lee had nineteen points. Of course, Madison Booker at twenty
seven whole probability going to be named SEC Player of
the Week in the National Player of the Week as well,
and Lee had nineteen points. After the game, down on
the floor right after it ended, I visited first with
(01:27:13):
the ED coach Pick Schaeffer, and then with Jordan Lee.
We talked Vick about you know, not knowing till you
know when you get the players on the floor. But
then look right from the gate, your group was ready
to go today.
Speaker 5 (01:27:25):
Boy did didn't it.
Speaker 8 (01:27:26):
I mean we beat a really good team today and
played really well. I mean, we executed on the half court,
played really solid defensively. I'm proud of them.
Speaker 1 (01:27:38):
They played those kids.
Speaker 8 (01:27:39):
When you only have seven and we play as hard
as we play in the press, you forced twenty eight
turnovers fifteen and half. I mean you can't help but
admire them. I mean I appreciate them so much. How
hard they're working, their toughness, their competitive spirit.
Speaker 12 (01:27:57):
It's really really cool and I'm really proud of them.
Speaker 1 (01:28:00):
You know, one thing I think is most impressive about
your group is can they can go through a little
bit of a sloppy period there in the second quarter
where Taylor made a little bit of a push and
then all of a sudden worked their way out of it,
hitting like a nine one run and then they're back
on track. Yeah, you know, we play that.
Speaker 8 (01:28:14):
Game every day, Longhorn, and they it's just how that
game is. And when you translate that to the floor,
I mean, they don't FaZe them. You know, they're they're unflappable,
as Debbie Antonelli would say. So, you know, again, I'm
proud of them. They played really well. Rory ran a
good floor game for us today, Booker was Booker. Jordan
(01:28:37):
made some big threes for us. Again, we're a different
team when you've got three guards out there that can
really score and that can really defend.
Speaker 1 (01:28:45):
You're in an unusual period right now, finals, wrapping up
in a semester, a lot of basketball, eating and sleeping
right now. Is there war that's put in or more
teaching or is it just reinforcing everything they're doing so well?
Speaker 8 (01:28:57):
You know, I kept myself up for two nights worried
all about this game, and in my watching church this morning,
it just hit me. You know, let's don't overcomplicate winning.
You know, what they do, how we do it is
good enough. And you can get into all the you
know psychedelics as we used to call them with Coach
(01:29:20):
Blair where he's running all these extravagant plays, where you
can just do what you're really good at and at
the end of the day, if you'll execute, it's good enough.
So again, I think for these kids, for what we
do and how we do it, they're really locked in.
You know, they've proven now they get up for the
big games. They may not get up for the sloppy ones,
(01:29:40):
but they get up for the big games. And again,
what they've shown so far is that they're worthy of
what everybody thinks of them. So and I don't have
to work that hard really to keep them humble, to
be honest with you there, I think they know they're
on a mission and we've got an opportunity. And you know,
this doesn't just happened by happenstance. These kids work hard
(01:30:02):
to be in the position we're in.
Speaker 1 (01:30:04):
All right, appreciate the time, Congrats on them no, praise
Lord and hook them horns. That's long, Warnons head coach
Vick Schaeffer. Jordan Lee. A big part of it as
well today is Jordan had nineteen points to help pace
the Texas attack as the Longhorns get the win handily,
and so Jordan will come over to join us now.
And Jordan I mentioned the coach and he agreed that
(01:30:24):
right out of the game it looked like you guys
were ready to go and really got into your game quickly.
Speaker 7 (01:30:28):
I mean, we're prepared, you know, knowing it's going to
be another phenomenal team, top fifteen team and in state game,
we took emphasis on our preparation and want to come
out and always want.
Speaker 3 (01:30:36):
To punch first.
Speaker 1 (01:30:37):
I always ask you about rhythm and feel and all
of that about shooting, not just freeze, but the game overall.
How much of that comes through the practice and how
much of it is a feel when you get into
the game.
Speaker 7 (01:30:49):
It's definitely a feel I would say beforehand, just getting
into the gym, getting used to their debt perception and
this game puts in particular a different ball. But you know,
just get in the game, take a dread before I shoot,
and you know, my teammates are doing a great job
delivering passes on time and arm target, and a lot
of the defense is kind of not there, so I just.
Speaker 1 (01:31:06):
Got to step up and knock them down. All right.
Congrats on the big game, appreciate it, Thank you. All right.
That's Jordan Lee and she was a big part and
her contributions cannot go unnoticed. Because as much as Madison
Booker and Rory Harmon really are their heart and soul
of this team and pace this team, Jordan Lee has
become a very important contributing player as well, especially with
(01:31:31):
the injury to the very talented freshman Leah Crump, who
got off to a great start before sustaining a foot
injury in Her status still unknown as to win her
return will be there, hoping it'll be maybe early in
conference player or something like that. They hope to get
Breonna Preston back soon. She'd had an ankle injury, but
they hope to get her back maybe before conference place
(01:31:51):
starts in one of these final three non conference games
before the start of conference play. And then Ashton, the
Missouri transfer who's not been able to get on the
floor yet with a knee gap jury but they hope
to get her back by conference play. Texas women at
three games remaining before the start of conference play, and
(01:32:13):
they have two games from eating before the Christmas break
Wednesday night at home at seven o'clock. Again's Northwestern State.
You can hear it here on the zime beginning at
six forty five, and then on Sunday afternoon in Brookings,
South Dakota at South Dakota State at one o'clock, and
then they'll break for Christmas, and then they have one
more non conference game before the startu conference play. On Sunday,
(01:32:36):
the twenty eighth, they'll host Southeastern Louisiana at Moody and
they open conference play on the road on New Year's Day,
New Year's evening, New Year's Day night, if you will,
six thirty tip off in Columbia, Missouri against the Missouri Tigers.
So that's what they have in front of them. We've
got some other things in front of us. We'll get
to next on sports media WAAM thirteen under the Zone
(01:32:58):
and the iHeartRadio app Fourth and Gold, South Lake. Carol
left for the Sota two yard line to throw renda
Lookie hell her yard Renda.
Speaker 5 (01:33:12):
And stopped sure.
Speaker 4 (01:33:15):
And we're back to the Craig Way Show. Have a
message for Craig, share it by using the talkback feature
on the Ihearts Radio WAPP.
Speaker 1 (01:33:26):
That was the decisive play that decided that wild High
school football state semifinal six A Division two state semifinal
on Saturday up at Mansfield, South Lake Carol the number
one team in the state. They've been wired to wire,
number one taking on De Soto and South Lake. Carol
led by sixteen points in the third quarter, thirty seven
(01:33:47):
to twenty one, and De Sota came fighting back, got
some stops, hit some big plays, actually took lead at
fifty one to forty four, and then Carol drove down,
picked up two defensive pass interference calls against Soto along
the way and wound up having first in goal at
the three or at the two, and then they had
(01:34:09):
a penalty. And then while coming down that fourth play,
fourth down play and Angela render their quarterback on a
rollout wanted to throw it first and then took off
of the end zone and tried to dive over and
couldn't do it. I thought he was gonna like leap
up in the air, and I think if he had
he'd gotten in, but he didn't. He tried to go
down lower and the SODA's defense stopped him a half
(01:34:31):
yard short. And there was all that celebration, and there
were four seconds left in the game. And Isaiah Standback,
who's wearing the telecast with me. You've seen him on
Cowboys preseason games and a lot of Dallas Cowboys program.
He was fired up. Yeah, theay was and he said
there was four seconds left. He said, you know, if
(01:34:52):
you're de Sota, now you just take a knee or
run around in the end zone to you know, to
take a safety or whatever. Because you're up by a touchdown.
Just don't make a catastrophic mistake. Fumble the football and
Carol recover and he turned it. They turned it and
handed the ball to Sarad Baker and he went ninety
(01:35:13):
nine yards for a touchdown. That ended And I said, oh,
you could just give it a Sarad Baker, who rushed
for three hundred and forty six yards and had four
hundred and twelve yards of total offense in the game.
Speaker 3 (01:35:24):
There had to be a couple of guys on the
sideline going get down and get down on a Sarks
say no, Mos yeah, but he.
Speaker 1 (01:35:30):
Was they weren't going to catch him, and so it
put an exclamation point on it. In five playoff games,
in five Sarad Baker has rushed forever thirteen hundred yards
in five playoff game. I see fifteen hundred Also now
the updated at fifteen hundred. I guess, okay, fifteen hundred yards.
(01:35:53):
So he's averaging three hundred yards and he did rush
for close to four hundred a week ago. So he's
been amazing. I think he's kind of committed the TCU
think as its signed with anyone yet. But somebody said
they spotted like a TCU sticker on one of his
(01:36:14):
shirts or shoes or something like that, then it may
have happened. Well, he just picked up yesterday an offer
from Ohio State. Oh well, well that might change things.
If that's the case, that might just change things. So
after the game, and like I said, I got a
chance to call that on Victory Plus. And that's, by
(01:36:35):
the way, the outlet that will UH stream and televise
all of the state championship games this week. I'll tell
you more about that in the moment. But after the game,
our sideline reporter C. T. Steckel was down on the field.
He would end up talking to Sir Rod Baker as
(01:36:55):
well before that, but first he was visiting with Claude.
Mathis now Claude Athos has been at Desto a while.
He's had really good success. He's won two state championships
and if they win the state title this week over
Houston ce King, it would be three state titles in
four years. Claude is a Greater Austin, Central Texas area guy.
(01:37:17):
He was an outstanding running back at Bartlett where they
won back then a one A what would now be
two A state championship. In the early nineties, he played
at what is now Texas State, it was then Southwest Texas.
He has coached in this area, did a good job
at Anderson and then is at De Soto where he
has won two state titles and is trying to win
(01:37:40):
a third now. One thing that Claude will tell you
is that his team never lacks for motivation, and part
of that is because there are many many people who
discount them. I have learned not to be one of
those people because I've seen how they respond. The people
(01:38:01):
that I've worked with in television, first for Fox Sports
Southwest and then it was Bally Sports Southwest and last
their FanDuel and now with victory plus have learned not
to discount the De Soto Eagles or their head coach
Claude Mathis, whose motor runs hot and if he feels
(01:38:22):
there's been a slight, he's gonna call it out. Back
in September, Desta lost its first two games of the season.
Now they are a lot like Duncanville and some other
teams that sometimes have a hard time finding good non
district components, so they have to play teams out of
(01:38:44):
state as well as really good teams. They played two games.
Their first two games. They played a team called Creekside
Creekside Academy out of Georgia, first game of the year,
traveled to Georgia to play the game, lost seventy to eight.
Then they played the defending six A Division one state
champions North Crowley who just went out of the playoffs
(01:39:06):
last weekend, in the quarterfinals. They lost that one, thirty
six twenty seven. It was right after that there was
one of these guys up in the Dallas Fort Worth
area who tweets and blogs and rights and stuff like that.
You know, I guess professing his knowledge about high school football,
(01:39:30):
and he had a tweet that said something like, wow,
losing two games something by combined more than forty points average,
and it said and the guy ended his tweet with
the words end of an era. That did not set
well with Claude Matthis as you listened to the postgame
(01:39:51):
interview when he was asked about his team, and he
got into the subject of somebody quote unquote calling them
out for saying it was the end of an era.
Speaker 3 (01:40:03):
We've got a chance now for three and four years.
What does this say about the Southern Is.
Speaker 5 (01:40:10):
This somebody said the d of an era?
Speaker 12 (01:40:15):
Nobody of an arragon?
Speaker 1 (01:40:18):
Meghanni telling him, Mechanan, don't.
Speaker 14 (01:40:22):
Know, we're here, We're here.
Speaker 1 (01:40:25):
We got da negatin nugget. Kids, I'm telling people.
Speaker 8 (01:40:29):
Talking about it, that's.
Speaker 5 (01:40:29):
All they do. They want to talk about it, talk
about him light a dog.
Speaker 1 (01:40:33):
Well, guess what, our kids, they fight, our coach, that fight.
Speaker 5 (01:40:37):
We believe in one another.
Speaker 8 (01:40:39):
Nobody can take down and Drake bat Lake charld Let's say,
told us, but they forgot about the soda.
Speaker 2 (01:40:44):
Let thank god.
Speaker 1 (01:40:44):
If we bad to shoulder everybody else what your team
puts your team, Yeah, that's that's how you put it.
Speaker 4 (01:40:51):
Wow.
Speaker 1 (01:40:52):
So uh yeah, it's all to the state championship. They're
gonna play Sheldon C. E. King in the Houston area
and that's gonna be the final high school football game
of the year in the state of Texas. That's the
last one of the day, the sixth A Division two
title game, seven o'clock on Saturday night. Now, I've had
a lot of people, In fact, I had somebody else
(01:41:12):
asked me yesterday, now where who's television and why and
how do I you know, and that kind of thing,
And that's okay, that's you know, that's understandable. This is
the first year for Victory the Victory Plus to televise
the state title games. And that's because, you know, fan duel.
(01:41:32):
Like I said, the former regional sports network had no
interest in doing any more high school football and that's
why there was no scoreboard show this year. The Victory
Plus stepped in paid a hefty rights fee to get
the rights to the state championship games, and so they
decided to do a game of the week all the
way through the semifinals. And that's what I've been doing.
(01:41:53):
When Texas has been on an open date or a
home game weekend. I'll go up and and do those games.
And that's what I did and went up there on Saturday.
So now it's to the state championship round. They're gonna
they're gonna televise every game. And you say, well, how
do I get it and what is it going to
cost me? Well, here's the easiest part. It's not going
(01:42:14):
to cost you anything. It's absolutely free. What you have
to do you download an app. We talk about downloading
the iHeartRadio app, the Victory Plus Sports app. You download
the app. It's free and just like you would run
ESPN Plus or anything through YouTube TV or any other
streaming device to your television, you do it the same way.
(01:42:38):
You just use the streaming device, whether it's Roku or
whatever to download Victory Plus. You can even look at
pass games like that crazy Desuto game. It's there, it's archived,
but it's all completely free. That's the other thing.
Speaker 10 (01:42:52):
You know.
Speaker 1 (01:42:53):
In the in the last few years of the Regional
Sports Network, as it was shriveling up, it was down
about thirty percent viewership. They had over eighty thousand viewers
watch that game Saturday on an app. So it's good
that tells you about it.
Speaker 2 (01:43:08):
Speaking of talkbacks, I know we've got to get a
break in here. There's one that you should hear.
Speaker 1 (01:43:12):
All right, let's hear it.
Speaker 16 (01:43:16):
Well, Hello, Greg, it's Jerry and I just had a
question and I hate to ask, but if you ever
have any Super Bowl tickets, would you please let me know.
It's been a while. I appreciate you. No super Bowl
tickets to give away, Jerry, Thank you though.
Speaker 1 (01:43:37):
I'll be at Jerry World this week starting on Wednesday
to call us six man games all the way through
the weekend. I'm doing calling seven of the twelve high
school football state championship games for Victory Plus. It'll be televised.
They're on Victory Plus and again it's free. You just
get to download the app. You can run it through
your TV, or you can watch it on your phone,
however you want.
Speaker 11 (01:43:56):
To do it.
Speaker 1 (01:43:56):
We'll be back to wrap up today's program on thirteen
under the Zone.
