Fox Sports nine eighty ninety five pointnine. Fact it is Levac and Gus
(00:34):
here on Fox Sports ninety five, nine and nine eighty the voice of the
Capitol Regions sports fan. It's agame day across the five forty eight.
The Albany Firebirds are reaction against theNashville Cats. We'll get to that a
little bit later. Our guy,Brian Mariano, the closer from the Albany
Patroons, will join us. Butthere's a reason I'm leading off with Eminem's
(00:55):
Legacy, maybe one of Eminem's mostunderrated songs in his career. There's a
reason we lead off with that songfrom arguably the greatest rapper of all time
today because later on right here onFox Sports ninety five to nine to nine
eighty, it is Game six betweenthe New York Knicks and the Philadelphia seventy
six ers. Our cover tonight Concenterwaightnine o'clock a few minutes after that,
(01:17):
a little abbreviated pregame show. Herein the postgame, we'll find it out
if the New York Knicks advanced tothe next round of the postseason, or
Philadelphia pushes this to a game seven, if Philly can start the comeback.
And that's why that song by EminemLegacy feels so much like the storyline of
tonight's game. Go back, evenif you're not a hip hop fan and
(01:38):
listen to some of the lyrics ofthat song Legacy by him, and then
he talks about his career and howpeople view him in More Boy, Doesn't
that seem fitting for how people viewboth the Knicks in the Sixers, and
how the legacy of these franchises andin particular these coaches and players might be
defined by just one game in thefirst round of ten twenty twenty four.
(02:00):
Now, the legacy of the Sixersactually might be more intriguing than the legacy
of the Knicks for these squads. And we'll start with the Sixers here,
because it's been a long road inPhiladelphia, a decade plus now of trust
the process. Now Philadelphia is achampionship contender, no doubt now. But
I was at that twenty sixteen BrooklynNBA draft. I was there covering that
(02:25):
NBA draft when the Sixers selected BenSimmons and it said Sam Hinkey died for
our sins. I was near thatsign inside the Barclays Center where they thought
the rebuild of Philadelphia where Syracuse's ownthat's right. Three minutes into the show,
we had a Syracuse reference. Syracuse'sown Michael Carter Williams won a unanimous
(02:47):
Rookie of the Year and the MVPof that Sixer team that season, and
they thought that was the rebuild.Let's be the worst team in the history
of professional sports. We'll get draftpicked, will load back up, and
we'll do a rebuild like no one'sever done in basketball history. We saw
it work for Major League Baseball teams. We saw the Sports Illustrated cover with
(03:09):
the Astros and Ben Ryder predicting thatthe rebuild would launch into a World Series
championship, and it did. Weremember the Chicago Cuz losing a bunch of
games, and the Orioles and theRoyals and the Giants. You can run
through how often teams have tanked inMajor League Baseball and being able to flip
that thing around and work the NFLnot as often as fans hope or think
(03:31):
it does happen when you tank fora long time and win. But Philadelphia
said, even without Sam Hanky,we are going to create a legacy of
all stars. Think about the playerswho came through Philly and it didn't work,
Jimmy Butler, Ben Simmons, JamesHarden, Doc Rivers as a coach.
(03:53):
They've tried a bunch of different playersto see if this thing could happen
and be that number two. Darewe say the Robin to Joellen Beiid's batman.
Well, time over time, theSixers didn't win. What the investment.
The legacy has always been tied tothe seven footer from Kansas. It's
(04:15):
been tied to the guy that whenin his most important games in his college
career came, he was injured,a stat that you know, if you
listen to the show, I haveprobably beaten to death too often, but
it still remains true. A guythat Philadelphia believed in so much that to
start off his career he missed doubledouble the amount of games that Greg Odin
(04:40):
did. How do we view Gregoden In Portland. How do we view
Joellen Beiid talk about believing in somebody? Would Poortland have been if they believed
in Odin? Or more importantly, what would Odin have been? I get
it, two different injuries, butstill it's a belief. It's a legacy.
It's what we'll remember from Philadelphia. If Joel Ebiding company go down to
(05:03):
the New York Knicks, it's gonnabe an offseason of It's time to turn
the page. It's time to bedone, it's time to move on.
It's time to be over with JoelEmbiid, a guy who just came off
an MVP season considered the best inthe NBA and he can't get to a
conference finals at NBA Finals, winthe championship for a fan base that said
(05:29):
we will sacrifice wins as long asthe title comes later on, and it
hasn't happened the legacy of Joel Embiidin this sixer trust the process could officially
be closed tonight. If they saythis is the final chapter for embeat in
Philly, and if it's a badloss in a tough town like Philly,
that's gonna be the talk from nowuntil the NBA draft of the time has
(05:51):
moved on and the Sixers need tomove on from embid. So that's the
Philly side of it, But whatabout the New York side of it?
The New York Knicks had a leadwith thirty seconds to go. The Knicks
needed an epic choke in epic collapseto not win Game five in advance into
the playoffs, and it happened. The comparisons we've had between Reggie Miller in
(06:15):
ninety four for the Pacers, thecomparison that people had against Trey Young and
the Hawks, although not as bigas a collapse, but Trey Young being
public enemy number one in the Gardenin embracing his villain role. So what
would the legacy be of the twentytwenty four New York Knicks If they blow
this game even though they're the dogin Game six on the road, and
then go to a Game seven. What's the confidence level for Knicks fans?
(06:38):
They are a franchise that's been badfor twenty five years. Nick van if
you're being honest with yourself, areyou gonna feel confident in this team going
to a Game seven? If theyget smoked tonight after choking away Game five,
you were talking about a legacy ofa team and a franchise that Knicks
haven't been able to build one intwenty years. THEA Finals was nineteen ninety
(07:00):
nine. And if we want totwist and dissect that ninety nine run,
let's remember it was the lockout season. It was Tim Duncan and his rookie
season San Antonio Spurs bringing home thechampionship, him and David Robinson doing the
thing as an eight seed the Knicks. Hell, if we're gonna call Lebron
James this season where he won thetitle in COVID of fluke, we can't
(07:23):
do that with a lockout season.I went for the Lebron haters. I
know another one of those championships twoof his four one was a lockout season,
one was a COVID season, theother one was the Ray Allen basically
buzzer beater. But that's a debatefor another day about the Lebron championships.
So the legacy of the twenty andtwenty four New York Knicks could be sumed
(07:45):
out as quick as Game six ifthey blow it, If they choked this
away as the two seed in theEastern Conference after the regular season, But
the more fun part, the moreintriguing part, and why the New York
Knicks legacy is that word is whatcould be if they win this one.
How often over the last twenty totwenty five years have Knicks fans had that
negative attitude of odds the Knicks,Oh, that's so nix of them.
(08:11):
We know the moments, whether it'sCharles Oakley getting thrown out of Madison Square
Garden and people wanting to chant freeoak then realizing Oakley might not be all
there and claiming that wine's not alcohol. Whether it's James Dolan yelling at screaming
at fans and they are being criticalduring games, whether it's Phil Jackson I
(08:33):
think, falling asleep during his tenureas an executive, and I'm sure there's
actual videos of him falling. Iknow we got some Albody Patroons talk coming
later in the show. No disrespectto the Patroons, phil Jackson's former coaching
stop, but there have been alot of odd things that have happened in
the garden and the storyline that comefrom MSG in VOMVA. The New York
Knicks has rarely been the success ofthe actual team and more of what's under
(08:58):
the tent at the circus this week. A lot of that can change if
you beat Philly. Oh what wasit? Just a few weeks ago was
talked about as the team in theNBA that nobody wanted to face, and
you can go on the road andbeat him in game six as an underdog.
You want to talk about legsy, you want to talk about change,
you want to talk about culture. And the words we hear is the buzzwords
(09:20):
in the NBA of cross professional sports. That's where it starts. What if
New York goes out and dominates Phillytonight, how quickly does that put the
East Air Conference check questioned? Bostonseems like the team to beat, and
it destroyed Miami last night, andBoston's put up historic numbers on offense.
(09:41):
But Indiana's pushing Milwaukee and they're closeto pull off that upset. Orlando and
Cleveland decided in Game five to actuallyscore points and be competitive rather than playing
rock fights in the backyard in theirfour or five matchup. So there are
some things that can really change involvingthe New York Knicks tonight. A team
that can battle back, and we'veseen this team in the fourth quarter do
(10:03):
it and you've heard it right hereon Fox Sports ninety five nine to ninet
eighty. A team that doesn't wantto be the same old Knicks, a
team that's want to fight off theall you need a superstar. You need
a superstar. I heard it beforewe hopped on today. By the way,
if you're listening to Colen Coward, who's on before us Colein. Coward
has had a conversation with Jack JasonMcIntire and said, what about the future
of the Phoenix Suns. The PhoenixSuns got a coast through a quarter billion
(10:24):
dollars, They got to pay offtheir top guys and Bradley Beale and Devin
Booker and I didn't mean to puthim third, but Kevin Durant. Coward
quickly said, the best thing thatthe Sons can do is trade Kevin Durant
to the Knicks. Now, nowthat's what we're gonna do for the storyline
of the summer. No matter howfar the Knicks go, whether they get
(10:46):
to the conference finals against the Celtics, whether they lose to the Sixers,
they get clipped by the Pacers, they beat, there's so many things invariables
and possible end results through the Knicksthat we're already started talking about the summer
of Rant Lebron going back like wedid in twenty ten, in twenty sixteen,
in twenty eighteen, that's fourteen fifteenyears ago. Even the storylines that
(11:13):
used to revolve around the Knicks fora decade and a half now to me
seemed played out. I'm tired.Do you want Kevin Durant on the Knicks?
Are we just saying that because wedid that for the last ten years?
Do you want a forty year oldLebron on the Knicks so he can
swoop in and take the credit?By the way, Durant would do the
same. Don't you listening want thelegacy if you're a Knicks fan of this
(11:35):
Knicks team, to be the guyswho were actually there from start to finish.
The Jalen Brunson's of the world, who weren't called superstars were said they
were too small for this. Thedudes like Mitchell Robinson who fell in the
draft, the Dante Divincenzos who wonderedif you were just a shooter, and
Josh Hart who plays such like amadman that everyone questions if his height is
(11:56):
actually six foot four. Like. That's what makes his Knicks team endearing is
that for so many years people saidsuperstar, superstar, superstar. And trust
me, I'm a Carmelo Anthony fan. I know, I know that the
superstar mentality for the Knicks was hopefulto work in. The most success the
Knicks have had has been past mellow, but it hasn't been to a conference
(12:18):
or NBA finals. But that sametalk of you have to have a superstar
to winning the NBA. He isstarting to get shook up a little bit.
And the next team is one ofthem because they're creating their own You
want to talk about a legacy, how about creating your own way to build
a winner in the NBA. That'swhat can be on for the New York
Knicks. Tonight they pull off agame six victory over Philadelphia on the road.
(12:41):
As a dog. We review theentire way we think about this team.
Oh, it makes me so excited. The nine o'clock tip off on
the East coast. You want totalk about primetime and make it a moment.
Gosh, someone for the Knicks callTomul Murray be like we saw you
hitting those posts midnight buzzer beaters againstthe Lakers. You got one some pieces
(13:05):
of advice for us tonight. Youcould see that to what happened. They're
in a crowd that's going to beabsolutely electric. Now is it because of
Rubing the billionaire buying the tickets tomaking sure it's electric for the Sixers.
That's very possible. Doesn't mean itwon't be great. How about Monica mcnutt's
gonna be on the call for thegame tonight. You got to make sure
(13:26):
the crowd MIC's a little bit furtheraway from the cheering section. Make sure

I was at the PGA Championship inAugust of twenty thirteen, Rochester. A
lot of thought enjoyed that event, and watching a golf Major is interesting because
(20:57):
it's one of those events that televisionreally changes the way we can assume the
product, Like you forget oh yeah, when you're walking around the golf course
there's other players playing rather than theleaders that it's more like the cameras are
going to follow, and it isreally difficult to track the ball and you
are sonic the hedshog and just flyup the course like other people hope they
(21:22):
can. When the coverage moves fromball to ball, you lose a lot
of time in there. But itwould be interesting to follow her around Tiger
Woods for a day. For me, it wouldn't even be so much of
like what's Tuger doing? What's hewearing? He's wearing red on Sunday?
Is he acting weird to the gallery? Because Tuger's played thousands of tournaments.
I would be more fascinated by theways in which other people following Tuger to
(21:45):
golf course would act. Would itbe their first time following Tuger and they'd
want to sneak in for a selfie? Are their young golf fans just hoping
to copy the way in which heplays? Or is it one glimpse of
a legend before or potentially you don'tget those glimpses anymore. And that's sort
of where I leaned towards in thestory that came out today that Tiger Woods
(22:06):
has accepted a special exemption to playin next month's US Open at Pinehurst.
Now Woods has won the US Openeda bunch in the past, hasn't done
it since way back in two thousandand eight. But for those who don't
know, Tiger does have a lifetimeexception exemption into the Masters, in PGA
(22:27):
Championship and again do the British Open, the Open until he's in his sixty
But now the situation involving the USOpen ran out in twenty twenty three exemption,
So now there's that out of otes, you can do it. It's
fine, special you can get inhere. What if I told you that
(22:55):
this exemption for Tiger is the firsttime he hasn't qualified for a major since
nineteen ninety six. What if Itold you that Tiger Woods is forty eight
years old and that watching him duringthe Masters playing at Augusta was at times
tough because he looked old and beatup at this point there's stories out there
(23:21):
that his son, Charlie Woods,is putting up some like viral hits.
I heard a story the other day, and you never can believe what you
see on TikTok and Snapchat. Justbecause somebody put a graphic up on the
video doesn't necessarily mean it's true.Tell the Internet that, though, Tell
the Internet that just because it's saidin a graphic doesn't make it true.
There's rumors out there that the teenagerI believe he's fourteen, was hitting three
hundred and fifty foot drives. Soif that's true, if a fourteen year
(23:47):
old's driving at three point fifty,I'm more intrigued by Tiger's kid playing golf
than Tiger at this point. Butit does make me feel old, kind
of sad, but all the littlebit because golf is so unique in comparison
to the team sports, whether it'sfootball, baseball, basketball, hockey,
the four Majors and so many others. You're not playing until you're forty eight.
(24:11):
Hell, you're lucky if you're playinguntil you're thirty eight, and we've
all accepted that as fans of thatsport. Of Okay, there's a certain
shelf light to this game. There'sa certain age where you know this thing
is gonna end and it's gonna beover, and then when that ends,
you go and play golf. ButI haven't lived through this yet. Maybe
(24:32):
that's because I'm too young. Maybebecause no golfer has been quite like Tuger.
Nobody has had that or around him, and one of the greatest golfers,
some would argue, the greatest golferof all time, with a much
tougher difficulty, with no disrespect tothe gold and Bear Jack and more.
Someone argue Tuger has been better thanJack and times in his career because it's
been a different sport in comparison whenhe competed. But now we've hit a
point with Tiger where he's way closerto fifty than he is twenty five,
(24:56):
and he's way closer to his latetwenties when he was dominating golf game in
mid twenties, where it seemed likeit was a no doubt, And now
we're like, you know what,You're just Tiger, you can play.
You know where it's gonna make specialrules for Tiger? In basketball? What
was it? Was it? SamSmith was the famous author who had the
Jordan rules book that we knew Jordanwas officiated differently because of the impact and
(25:18):
importance of what his legacy would befor the future of the NBA. We've
heard about those rules was that theGretzki rules, that Gretzky never got in
fights in hockey, that somebody elsedo the fighting for him. I don't
know what word we use to describethose types of things, but this one's
pretty easy for me. For Tiger, it seems sad like to be almost
(25:41):
fifty and qualify for the US Openwould be impressive enough. And we've hit
that point with Tiger. But that'sthe problem with this special ruling for Tiger,
that we have to make something differentfor him. Tiger was the exact
opposite of that. For nearly thirtyyears, Tiger was doing things in golf
we'd never seen before. Tiger wascaptivating an audience. And it's not just
(26:06):
because of race, it's because ofage, and it's because of just casual
sports fans that Tiger Woods was captivating. See this is the greatest golfer of
all time. Watch what he's aboutto do in the prime of his career.
Not Hey, your name's Tiger,Come play in this tournament that's important.
What if he wins, what ifhe's good? Are people like Tuger?
(26:26):
You shouldn't have been here. You'rehere because you're Tiger. That's what
makes that frustrating for me and makeme feel old that we have hit the
point within the last ten days thatTiger Woods exemptions are needed now for him
to play in majors. Lebron isgonna get ready this summer to do what
(26:48):
a retirement tour setup final season freeagency. So this is likely the last
ride for Lebron, Steph Kerry andDurant. They don't have that much time
left. Hell, we just sawJason Kelcey and Aaron Donald for big guys.
Those are two of our favorites rightthere, a little bit further up
(27:08):
in their start of their careers andthe other guys I mentioned. But we
are truly going through the change ofculture in sports right now with some of
the superstars, legendary era defining athletesfinding the tail end over the hill years
on the way for these guys.Fox Sports ninety five nine and ninet eighty
(27:33):
Did you see what happened the Metsgame over the weekend? Did you see
what happened in the Mets game thisweek. Do you have any thoughts of
what's gonna happen for the Mets comingup? Let's start with what's been going
on involving the Mets and their catcher. Well, their catcher was in a
bit of a controversy over the pastfew days and Mets manager Carlos Mendoza did
(27:56):
not agree with the call. Ifyou haven't seen this, there was a
play that it was the Cubs catcher, but Mets footage might have shown the
Mets doing this as well, butmore so the Cubs that the catcher his
foot was on the plate during aclose game. Mets and Cubs bantling and
out is he blocking the plate? Is he not blocking the play? Cubs
(28:19):
take that game one nothing on Wednesdaynight. So now golf felt like they
were the first kings of this. The internet slusive of golf felt like they
were the first kings of this. The internet slusive somebody moving the ball or
not having the right mark and thencalling the tournament and telling them what they
watched on television. Well, thesluts were out last night on social media
(28:40):
as people were taking pictures of thetelevision feed of where the Cubs catcher was
standing, whether his left foot wason the middle of the play or in
front of the play. And thenwe went even deeper that some people went
and found the Major League Baseball presentationfor the new guidelines on catchers blocking the
(29:02):
plate and where they are or arenot allowed to stand. Now, I
get it, this is an audiomedium. I can't show you the pictures
even I share them on social media, but I think you understand where the
catcher would be the illegal spot twofeet in front of home plate, facing
the third base line. You seea runner coming down third base, he's
(29:26):
gonna have to burrel them over afoul territory straddling home plate. You get
the idea of what they now deemto be illegal, as they don't want
the big time collisions at home play. This is not the same thing,
though. Major League Baseball is ina weird spot because it doesn't seem like
the same thing. One foot infront of home plate can be completely blocking
(29:48):
home plate or two different things.Major League Baseball's replay statement said this quote.
After reviewing all relevant angles, thereplay official definitively determined that no violation
of the home plate collision rule occurred. Catcher's initial setup was legal. He
moved into the lane in reaction tothe trajectory of the incoming throw. Okay,
(30:17):
I'll probably buy myself on this takeof where the Hubs catcher stood in
the debate of the whole thing. And I know you're trying to be against
violence, and there's a part ofwhere it's like, Okay, blocking the
plate used to be a big thingin baseball that you don't want to be
obnoxious with it. I'm okay withthe blocking of the plate again to a
(30:41):
degree, to a level, Iwill be the first whould be a young
guys way back in the day andCentral New York and Syracuse, believe it
or not, they put my SpongeBobbody in catcher's equipment. At one point,
this big fella was behind the platecatching until they eventually threw me to
the outfield and varsity and everything else. But at one point in my teenage
(31:02):
life, grow and put some muscleon the body, maybe a little slimmer.
I was the catcher. But herewas the thing that I liked about
being the catcher, being usually thebiggest kid on the field and being more
of a football player for sure thana baseball player. That was my moment.
You understand how awesome that was beinga catcher and blocking homeplate and knowing
you're gonna win that battle every singletime, and then if someone tried to
(31:25):
run you over, you could protectyourself and try to run them over.
Imagine like Mike Alstott, Jerome bettisplaying catcher. Sometimes I even wonder back
if I was even looking for theball or if I was just trying.
I'm almost positive there was a gamewhere I actually took steps up the third
base line like forgetting I actually toblock the play. I'm just like,
Oh, I can't wait for thiscollision. This is gonna be awesome.
(31:48):
So as someone who is biased tothe rule that I guess seeked out contact
or said you want some, comeget some a llah John Cena, there
was some excitement to that, Butwe don't want Ray Foss seeing Pete Rose
in an All Star game to enda career. I think we all have
rational thoughts and what blocking the plateis in baseball and what is having just
(32:08):
one foot on it? Do youthink the Cubs catcher was hoping for it?
Do you think he was hoping fora big time playing a collation in
a fight to not from the angles. I saw no, but if he
did, probably watch it a littlebit. I've probably been to it.
(32:30):
I probably want to see what itwent down. All right, is Fox

It's so good. It's Lovak andguzz on the voice of the Capitol Regions

Jeff Lavac on a game day isscheduled to join us. So we'll be
talking a lot about the Firebirds.Shout out to our guy nineties kid on
Twitter. He asked us a questionabout the NFL Network broadcast involving the Nashville
(39:38):
Cats and the Albedy Firebirds and somethings with that. Uh, Lavac will
answer those questions for you just alittle tease for that conversation coming up in
forty minutes, I will ask himabout Flock University. Last night. For
those who don't know Flock University, the Albedy Firebirds Coaches show, I would
say it's the best episode in thehistory of the show. And if you
(39:59):
missed it, the audio version willbe replayed on Saturday nine o'clock right here
on Fox Sports twenty five nine toninety. A lot happened during that show,
so much that the owner of theteam showed up during the show.
I don't want to say Mike Cordabusted in, but some will get this
reference. Others may not. Uh. If you know Dave Portnoy from Barstool,
(40:22):
a couple of years ago, therewas a legendary moment where he showed
up on the Call Me Daddy podcastto talk about the controversy involving the podcast.
I think that's what I'll compare Mike'sappearance to on that and I will
tell Levac this. I'm sure he'snot listening right now, but you'll get
to scoop when I tell miss Idid have to edit Flock University. We
(40:44):
did get our first swears flying through. Yes, they were from Mike,
So there's a nice little teas foryou. In about forty minutes, you
could find out why the Firebird ownerwas swearing on the Coaches Show last night,
involving a Dave Portnoy like droppin' onLaninet night's episode, and how if
it allt affects the NFL network broadcasttonight, if it's even on the NFL
(41:06):
network, And we'll cover that allcoming up in about forty minutes. Let's
keep that local vibe going though.Last week it was all about the local
teams, and rightfully so, withthe Albany fire Wolves getting the opportunity in
the quarterfinal round and knocking off TunkyJamison standing on his head and dancing in
the semi finals. We knew SiennaLacrosse and you Albany Lacrosse were piecing together
really good seasons throughout the regular seasonas they got ready for more and more
(41:30):
important games. Is their season rolleddown, we knew about the Firebird kickoff
the Patroons you had one more timereminder on there one of their voices of
the season. Brian Marianno is gonnajoin us in the third hour coming up,
But let's give some love to theAderondack Thunder, our friends way up

(41:52):

Adirondack Thunder dancing in the ECHL playoffs. Some good stuff right there. Shout
out to Adirondack Man, that crowd, especially the podcast audience. We know,
we know how the signal works here. We know we're trying to get
some more love up north for you. We get that, so we appreciate
(42:34):
you listening on the digital side andon the app. iHeart at tell your
friends, especially if you're living upnear Adirondack Thunder country. We got love
for the Thunder. It's not toolong ago the Levac and I were battling
on the ice and a shootout.I won that. By the way,
toe shoes cost Levak. That dancea story for another day. But shout
out to the Adirondack Thunder. Let'ssee this thing continue to roll on.
(42:54):
They got some more games on theway, the Norfolk Admirals coming up and
that matchup is the Thunder continued tohope they can continue to press on in
the postseason. So you've got theAdirondack Thunder in the MINX. You just
heard all the teams from lacrosse tohoops to football and more than are doing
big things. You would think that'dprobably be it, right. You got
(43:16):
everything covered, no other big localnews in the five one eight. It's
May, which is one of theoddest times in sports where you either got
the postseason or you're thinking about thefuture. Na nah like la night.
Uh uh? How about my boycoach Jerry McNamara, si Ona zone still
on fire. I saw some tweetscoming from around the country. College basketball
(43:39):
Twitter is an odd place to go. I usually think the weirdest sport to
watch on social media was the NBA. NBA Reddit's weird because you've got some
bizarre chat rooms out there that peopletry to overanalyze everything. You want to
change the sport. Some things haveactually been factored in, whether it be
the n season tournament, or thelottery or other things in the NBA that
(44:00):
have actually changed because of these conversations, back to backs and more. The
new wave of thinking the smart leaguets, it's called but college basketball Twitter got
weird because they were just these botaccounts that the most coverage conferences like the
Big East and others were getting werethrough these accounts. And now some are
calling coach mc namara's overall approach tothe transfer portal one of, if the
(44:27):
not best in the country. That'spretty impressive. The guy has not coached
a single game as the head coachyet, but already people are saying he's
doing just as good as anybody inthe country in the transfer portal. Peter
Carey seven footer players. I know, they just got a committed life.
You got more and more players.I know they just got a commitment from
(44:50):
Long Island. The other day atBig four they got coming in. Shout
out to the social media team. They're doing a fantastic job. Continue to
show off some of the backgrounds andmore. Marcus Jacks gotta gi him.
He's a Capital region guy. ButI think about that for a Siana team
that was so bad last season,Now, how much, if at all,
did the portal play a factor inthe restructure in that roster? I
think we have to be fair theportal take and the portal give. I
(45:14):
just had one of our bosses actuallysay that in the meeting the other day
about ratings about Nielsen, Nielsen Takethand Nielsen give. If I think he
might have also screwed it up.Now, then are you thinking how that
meeting but the portal could be thesame way. Look, you can look
at Cienn say nobody was effected asmuch at a mid major level as Sienna,
And you could even push that argumentfour or five years back with guys
(45:35):
like Jalen Pickett that Siena has beenone of these programs in the basketball silence
has been absolutely shredded by the portalbecause guys wanted to find another opportunity to
power five. But what's happening nowis these guys like a Miles Wheel,
Bob ooh okay, Siona might bethe spot for me, Peter Carey,
that might be the spot for me. I know, he's a coach,
but Ryan Blackwell, arenzean o Wakuboy. The portal for Siennas continued to
(46:00):
turn up. So even when you'renot on the court making headlines, you're
getting love for people for how youhit the portal makes you re wonder what
the sport of college basketball is goingto look like in the future. I
remember how big signing Day used tobe. I just saw us the other
day. I should ask our guyChristian over at Elevation ten thousand. If
(46:22):
Chritians listen, make sure to shootme a text if you're listening to this
part, because I saw some playershere locally commit to Rhode Island and Mercy
Hurst, I believe was the otherschool on May first, which traditionally in
the college landscape, you had tomake your college decision if you were a
rising college freshman by May first. But if you're deciding on May first,
(46:46):
does that mean the spring seasons forthe next year are already locking in recruits
and just using those guys an example? I'm talking more of like the timeframe,
however, everything pieces together. Isit least important now to get the
eighteen year old right? There wasa time where Signing Day used to have
videos across every platform from Fox toCBS to ESPN, and then the backwards.
(47:10):
Thinking of hang on a second,I remember Lorenzo Booker was one of
the big names. I believe,a running back of Florida State was the
first one I remember doing signing dayon television and they said, this is
a big deal. We got tofigure out where he's going. We has
having signing Day. But then allof a sudden, Lebron did the decision.
They were like, well, thatcan't believe this. Why what he
do? What do you mean thesame network it is signing it. This
(47:31):
is the same thing Lebron did.He just gave it a name and got
to do it himself. But signingDay feels less and less important, Like
are we gonna two years from nottalking about McNamara's freshman class or does it
always have to be roped in asa recruiting class. I think about Coach
Catuso. Coach Catuso for you allmany football as the coach we used to
(47:51):
talk to the most when it cameto signing Day and recruiting day. Because
the football landscape pre COVID had notchanged that much that impact players were still
being signed who were seventeen eighteen nineteen, and now coach Catusa's living in a
little bit of a different world. They can bring in the freshman who might
like the red shirt physically because ofthe high level of football they're played at.
(48:12):
But now these FBS guys are comingto the five one eight. Sure
there's been the Jared Versus who haveleft and chef under Kufflers who have left,
but there's other guys who've came andgotten opportunities, been able to excel
and speak about you Albany football man. What a Troy High School's own Dev
(48:32):
Holmes. I saw Dev Holmes gota contract. Good for him. Dev
Holme is gonna get another opportunity. But we've got signed with the Rams,
So shout out to Troy's own Dev. Home is gonna get a little run
there in training camp coming up ona new haven. So good for him
getting an opportunity. Cole Burgess,Tory and Greenwich. Isn't that your guy?
(48:54):
How about thanks to me the Jets. By the way, Home's going
to the Jets. I thought he'sgoing to the Rams. Jared first,
he's going to the Rams. Homesto the Jets, he's gonna opportune with
the Jets. And yet cole Burgessa product Greenwich, not Corey and Greenwich.
Cole Cortland State's owned Division three championsget a little run with the Cincinnati
Bengals. So a lot of coolthings happening locally across the five one A
(49:15):
boy that is stacked. There havebeen times where I've done this show that
there have been maybe one or twolocal stories that broke through in May one
or two. Maybe you had oneteam playing for a conference title. Maybe
you'd get a recruit who joined, but May was always a weird spot.
One or two local stories were thesports that people talked about here in the
(49:36):
five to eight football, basketball, lacrosse, baseball. No, I just
went through everything, football, hoops, lacrosse. All right, baseball,
we'll get you back out there.I'll give you one. Uh what a
Jackson Mueller from still Water. He'sgonna play for you already, baseball for
his dad, John Mueller. Bambam after the sea. There you go.
I'm only baseball out man. Baseballstill got some good things going on
(49:59):
as well. So wild things acrossthe local scene, for sure. What
a time I was ready to callthis one of the best times in a
long time in May, but mean, I'll save that take for later in
the show. I do want toget to this story though, I do
want to get to the story infollof You a player in the NFL.
It's already confusing people about why what, Well, it's the quarterback and that's
(50:20):
Justin Fields, the quarterback for thePittsburg Steelers. We know Justin Fields came
in traded from the Chicago Bears.Caleb Williams is going to be the number
one overall pick. People wondered whatwould be the right fit for Fields end
up being the Steelers, and morethan likely reports that QB one is still
Russell Wilson. But now there's beentalks that maybe Justin Fields could do other
(50:43):
things where the Pittsburgh Steelers, includingreturning kicks. That's right. Special teams
coordinators with the Pittsburgh Steelers have beentalking about Justin Fields potentially returning kicks for
the Steelers. He runs a fourto four. He wass it on the
field. He asked you to use. Don't forget the kickoffs are different than
(51:05):
ever before. You would think thiswould be the dumbest thing to do.
Right old school thinking, we're gonnahave our backup quarterback. Do what,
He's gonna return kicks. He's gonnaget killed, he's gonna get blasted.
Why would we do that? Whatif we need him in the game.
The most bizarre kick returner that Ican remember was Legarrett Blunt for the Patriots
those years where Blunt was just sobig. It looked awkward that a big
(51:27):
dude like that would be out therereturning kicks, but he did. He
returned kicks. I've seen quarterbacks coverkicks, and I know that sounds even
more bizarre than returning kicks, Butthere were some quarterbacks who played small schools
who just wanted to get on thefield, and they knew they were gonna
suit up there getting on the field. I've seen quarterbacks cover kicks. Now
that's more D two D three fcs. But besides, Justin Field's taking a
(51:52):
big time hit, do you haveany other reason why he shouldn't have the
ball in his hands. He canrun, he can make out is miss,
He's an offensive threat. It's anew rule for kickoffs. You want
to use him. You don't wantthem to just sit on the bench and
collect money. You think he givesa team a better opportunity to win.
All those things just made sense outloud. And what if j Justin Fields
(52:14):
is great on kickoff returns, whatif that's the advantage. It feels like
one of these things that the Steelersreally have to work out in practice.
Every NFL team this upcoming season isgonna work on the new kickoff rules and
the start not being the same, and you go back to the XFL of
how they did this back in theday of preventing more injuries. I've always
(52:34):
said this about kickoffs too, likeif you did a kickoff now and explain
this something why it should be infootball, would never go through. I'm
for this though, like there aregonna be certain things in professional football that
are gonna happen over the next fiveto ten to fifteen years that sound like
so ridiculous in twenty twenty four, but in five to ten years are gonna
be accepted. Like the great examplewe were talking about this with Reggie Bush
last month. If people were outragedin two thousand and five, two thousand
(53:00):
and six that Reggie Bush was notgoing to be the number one pick,
Like if you told somebody now thata running back was going to be the
number one pick, they would laugh, laugh and laugh. The contracts wide
receivers get people would laugh and belike, that's just made up. That's
not true. If I told youkickers are more important now than ever in
the history of professional football, thatwould be laughed at. That's also true.
(53:23):
So the idea that like justin fieldsas a quarterback returning kicks seems laughable
and outrageous in twenty twenty four probablywon't be if more athletes can do that.
My tick that I think is reallygonna happen in the next five to
ten years is that we're barely gonnasee punters exists as a position. What's
gonna happen in the next five toten years is think about punters right now,
(53:45):
How often is a punter on thefield? Punter might hold, so
take the holds off. Take theholds off for the extra points. So
actually a punter punting in a gamefive, eight, ten, two.
How many punts per game are usedby a punter, So let's just say
it's seven. Okay, average puntsin an NFL game, Let's just say
(54:10):
seven. So I can get sevenplays out of one guy, and I'm
gonna pay him what half a billionbucks. That's a lot of money.
What if I just put an athleteback there and I threat potentially to do
both four punts per game per teamin the NFL one punt per quarter.
I'm paying a dude who plays fourplays a game. Stop. I think
(54:36):
the punter's gonna be gone in fiveto ten years. Allow the full back,
I allow the wing back and somebodyelse. The punter will be gone,
and you're gonna see like a thirdquarterback who can actually kick back there
booting the football and making plays happenthat lost time for our number two of
Lavak and Gas. We're just aroundthe corner with this. I love it,
(54:57):
man, It's just around the corner. We're gonna have more on the
way. We're gonna give you thetop four to four the four biggest stories
