what's interesting is that way I sentyou the run I sent you the rundown
(01:26):
for our show. And what's what'sinteresting is that I want to address our
like every every superhero story, andyes we are. We are radio superheroes,
which we're what we're doing today,we're doing We're we're making history.
Uh. The cross the initial crossoverepisode of Lovak and Gods and No creduntionals
required. Uh. Our origin story, like the origin story for like me
(01:49):
meeting you and and Levac. Uhsorry, Vac, I don't think you
were invited to this one. Uh. Well to do a lot to do
well with just Levac and the carand the cardinal. We'll talk about how
I got the cardinal nickname in ain a minute or two, but let's
talk about our orange or our originstory. So I met I initually met
(02:10):
Levak. I met him at theAlbany the Old School AFL Albany Empire back
in twenty eighteen. And it wasthe funniest part about how he met was
that he brought his He brought hisdaughter, Bella. Bello was in high
school at that I think Bella wasin high school at that point. And
I see, I'm getting At thattime, they had complimentary the complimentary meals
(02:32):
for media, and I grabbed mystuff the Empire and paid for it.
And I grabbed my stuff and Isee the vac and Bella sitting at the
sitting at the table by themselves, like hey, so okay if I join
you guys at the table, likeyeah, come on ahead, And it's
like, oh, I'm Ryan McCarthy. I'm from Broken Back. At the
time, I was working for aweb local website. Actually no, I
was working for Arena Fan Arena fandot com. Uh shout out Tim Kapper,
(02:54):
my guy from Montreal who's uh knowsall things Arena football. I was
looking for Arena at the time, doing beat writing with them for the Empire.
And and I get the very seriousside of Levac's Oh Jeff, pleasure
to meet you. And we justgot to know each other from there.
(03:15):
And we kept in touch every sooften, you know, just to just
to you know, just letting eachother know what we were doing. And
and then I said, you know, I'm in college. I'm in school
right now. I need an internshipto complete my degree. Who do I
talk to at the radio station youwere previously at? Who do I talk
to? It's like, all right, let me talk to guys. That's
(03:37):
how we met and made got theapplication, got the approval intern for the
former radio station we were at,got to do some remotes with you guys,
got to do some got to hangout with you guys in studio,
and but good to work on theweekend shows, UH with with Closer and
with our friends Eric and Eric andMike. I've told I think I've told
(04:00):
that story about Actually no, Ishould I should share that story. Yes,
the Cooper's Town. I don't knowhow many people know it, the
Cooper's Town story. So Eric,Mike and I we were able to get
UH, we were able to getmedia press passes for the twenty nineteen Baseball
Hall of Fame inductions. It wasso much fun because my favorite player,
(04:24):
my current, my former, mymy favorite Yankee of the core four Mario
or Rivera was being inducted that dayand I'm taking a picture. I'm snapping
pictures. And at that time Igot a camera, learn how to use
a camera. I use a camera. I knew how to use a camera.
Were just taking pictures and we itwas a long day. It was
(04:46):
a thirteen hour day. So we'regetting we're getting bus to our to the
car. I borrowed my parents vanfor the day and we stopped at McDonald's
just outside of Cooperstown, just outsideof the city Cooperstown, and I got
my den, I got my dinnerand Eric. Eric got his dinner,
and then Mike was sitting in thecar because at the time he didn't he
just came back from having having surgerya few weeks a few weeks beforehand.
(05:13):
And we're back. We'll get backto the car. We go through the
drive through, Mike gets his order. We drive up to the cashier,
give him, give him the money, and I said, hey, you
want this guy. This guy overhere, he's so hungry. He chewed
his own leg off. Mike andEric are dying. The Balds guys like
(05:38):
horrified. I was like, what, like, yah, choot his old
leg off. He was that hungry. Yeah, but but no, it
was. It was a great experienceand I kind of wanted I wanted to
carry it over into after I graduated. But I graduated in twenty twenty,
and we all know what happened intwenty twenty. I called I called the
(06:00):
bad times because you couldn't do anything. Uh, but I wanted to still
work for the for the Four LetterNetwork and with you guys. And then
you got let Go, and andthen we then you started Godzilla Media,
and I said, hey, youknow I lost I'm looking for a co
host. No creunch was acquired, and I reached out to you. I'm
like, I know, you know, you just got let Go, I'm
(06:21):
looking for a co host. Wonderfulwe can team up. And then you
got Godzial the media rolling. Wehad that rolling for a bit, so
no crunches required. And it's notjust on Belly of Sports. Was also
on Godzilla Media. So I'm ontwo platforms, which is cool. Every
once in a while, guys,Livacco guys would be on the podcast,
(06:42):
and then you guys got the bigthen you guys were back on the radio,
right and then I started contributing tothe show, like just kind of
doing just on Twitter, I wouldbe I was not. First I was
known as Ryan the Intern. ThenI was Ryan the Former Intern. Now
I'm Ryan on Twitter and I'm makingmemes, I'm doing this, I'm covering,
I'm showing, I'm posting the playsof the day, and all of
(07:05):
a sudden I became the cardinal, not just priest. Not. Oh gosh,
I'm being a bad Catholic here andforgetting what's what's the priests assistant?
Sometimes the not luke. I don'tknow, I'm not Catholic, there's a
(07:26):
different term. Oh gosh, I'mbeing a horrible cat. Well, you
got elevated above priest to cardinal. You didn't have to work your way through
the system. You jumped ahead. Not quite baship somewhere in there. Yeah,
not quite Biship, not quite Pope, even though again I'm not I'm
not Roman Catholics. So I waslike, you know what, because before
I went to school, I wasa chaplain. I was I was a
(07:47):
team chaplain for the Albany River Rats, the Albany Devils. Yeah, see
how you worked those in the conversationsand for a short time to Tri City
Valley Cats. So before I became, before I started back to going back
to school, and listen, beforeI met you guys, I was team
chaplain for three for three local professionalteams. So I told AA. I
(08:07):
told that to Avac and he kindof was like, always called me,
always called me the priest or orthe pastor. I'm like, I'm not.
And I kept having the correct timI said, I'm not. I
wasn't a priest, I wasn't apastor. I was a chaplain. I'm
a chaplain. Deacon, by theway, is the term I was looking
for deacon. Funny that I was. I was a deacon at one of
the church church I used to goto once. But but but then I
(08:31):
heard you guys say, you know, I can't. I can't remember if
he was a priest or a pastor, and you know, let's just go
with Cardinal. Just goes Cardinal.I was like, you know what,
I'll go with that, and herewe and here we are all that time
later for meeting each other, froman internship, to going the non traditional
route, to contributing to the traditionout to increasing the brand to take you
(08:54):
no credentials required, to an ideayou wanted to do post college too now
watching it grow every single time, and you're a content creator. There's times
where I think people underestimate what thatword means because there is still fatigue and
there's still frustration, and whether it'straditional or non traditional. And I promise
(09:16):
we're going to talk sports, butI love talking about the industry, and
you know I love talking about theindustry, and I just want to give
for the second consecutive conversation or answer, I want to give you more credit
because for those who aren't looking atyou on the visual side, the no
credit is required side. You mentionedgoing to college, you're not nineteen spoiler
alert, You're not the regular collegestudent. If you're listening to cross Upstate
(09:39):
New York. And I don't knowif you're familiar with his work, but
the best comparison I can have toyou is a guy named Jim Lurch who's
known as the manchild out at Syracuse, who's had a long career twenty twenty
five years. Where your guys' storiesare very similar. The only difference is
he did television post graduating. Hewent the audio route. Yeah, he
(10:01):
busted his butt. You're busting yourbutt. So if you are somebody older
than your teenage years or older thanthe traditional college student. And you're hearing
Ryan right now. He'll tell youlike, yeah, if you want to
switch up your career, Zach Bradyout. And I think Watertown's doing the
same thing. Like he's got somecapital region ties. Do it because you're
watching him do it right now, man, And he's inspiring for people who
(10:24):
want to reset it. Yeah, and think about this way. Howard Cassell
did not start in broadcasting until hewas forty two. Yeah, before that,
he was a lawyer. He wasI think he was a lawyer for
ABC at that point before he wentin too broadcasting. Then he sent him
a couple of a couple of radiosamples, a couple of tapes, and
then it was the voice of MondayNight Football for a very long time,
(10:48):
voice of the Olympics, voice ofAB's basically the lead voice of ABC for
like a decade and change. Soyeah, it's I quote see us Lewis
when I when I say it's it'snever too late to dream and dream,
to to dream a new dream,or I'm paraphrasing here, it's it's it's
(11:09):
it's never too late to dream anotherdream or start something new. So you
know, I'm look at used toput this way. This is how old
I am. Levac and I areonly separated by three hundred and fifty nine
days, so we're almost exactly ayear apart. So that's how you can
tell you that's how old I am. It's it's just it's just funny how
(11:33):
and it's funny how life works thatway. So I get to know you
got to you know you guys, and you guys are friends both on and
off air, you know, doingmy podcast, me doing stop by Stay
his name and he appears I believein the cardinal Yes, we'll get you
the Joe Henry pop if we needto to you set social media records you
(11:58):
I'm down with a photoshop of yourface over Joe Hendry's face. Can you
add the hair because I at leasthave the Can at least have the hair?
I mean yes, but yeah,I was actually want to talk about
the genesis of this podcast. Iknow, no credentials require podcast, and
what it was was that when Iwas initially when I mentioned Broken Bat Media,
(12:20):
my friend Corey, who also didcovered live sporting events in the Capitol
Region area, it was very difficultat the time for us to get media
passes for different sporting events, especiallythe local colleges. And I don't know
how it's true. It's true, how true it's been for you for Fox
Sports or for other previous stations you'veworked for. I don't know how difficult
(12:43):
it's been for you to to getcredentialed for these sporting events, whether it
be individual for the season, itwas the county kind of difficult for us.
So we decided, all right, let's start a podcast together. I'm
trying to think of names, tryingto think of different names, you know,
just something that stood out, somethingthat really stood out, And I
(13:05):
thought to myself, you know what, it's really difficult for us to get
press credentials to sporting events. Whydon't we just call it no no Press,
no press credits required. At first, and I was like, nah,
no, that doesn't sound right myself. You know what, Let's let's
retool it. Let's I get nocredentials required. And that's where it started,
(13:28):
and we had we recorded a grandtotal of two episodes in twenty nineteen,
and then we had to go onhiatus because unfortunately, Corey had a
family event and we had to.We had to we had to stop.
We had to stop the podcast. So then twenty twenty comes along and I
said, I say to myself, you know, twenty twenty, we're kind
(13:54):
of stuck in our homes. Stillget still get press credit, press credentials
to local events. Why don't wejust restart the podcast. So we restarted
the podcast. I was belly upsports at that point, So you started
the podcast. We talk about nationalsports, and we talk about the NFL,
college football. We do some differentstuff like like pop culture that we
(14:16):
talked about the movies, talking aboutdifferent movies, different television series. We're
watching Lemand and Laurian was starting atthat point. Cobra Kai was starting at
that point, so we got intothat because we both grew up in the
eighties watching Star Wars, watching TheKarate Kid. So it was a huge
thing. And one days Corey said, you know, I guess I gotta
walk away, Like all right, that's cool. So for a good
