Speaker 1 (00:01):
W o X, Troy w g y F MHD two
Olban W two forty e c Olbening, Fox Sports nine eighty,
ninety five point nine. Fact it's Vac and Guzze on
ninety five nine Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 2 (00:19):
Oh, you're like a lot of the racecourse and hard
three guys and the wars, the tempers.

Speaker 1 (00:24):
Sports Fox Sports thirty five nine.

Speaker 3 (00:27):
Nine eighty Matthew, the Santas is here, Andrew Champagne is.

Speaker 1 (00:30):
Here like this are y'all?

Speaker 2 (00:32):
I got ant Lavata still smutched me up these in
the c Now, guys, I'll go to Matthew first. I
saw you did pick up the steel chair.

Speaker 1 (00:39):
Over the one. Yeah, it's yeah, yeah. It didn't work
out well for me. I got put in a sleeperhole
about ten minutes later, and uh, guess what, it's still
not raining. That's the good dry Now I did hear
there was a straight yeah, yeah, no, it does, it does.
He gets me, He lets me know what it's done

(00:59):
with the rest of the um and and then you know.
But now it's good to see my friend Andrew here.
I mean, we had fun together. We like going back
and forth, but we're on the same horse racing Twitter thread,
direct message group and have a lot of fun going
back and forth every day about the races.

Speaker 4 (01:15):
That's the thing I wanted to point out before we
go much further is that this works because we're friends,
and I just want to point out before things go
thoroughly off the rails, as we know that they will,
that this sport is miles better with Matthew in it
than it was before he came on board a couple
of years ago. He is a credit to this game,
and because of that, let me finish, Let me finish,

(01:38):
let me finish. Because of all this, Because of this,
I can go extra hard at him and give you
guys as much content as you can possibly push out
on your social media channels, which, by the way, you
should all go out and follow right away after this interview.
But no, it's been a lot of fun. Matt's one

(01:58):
of the good guys. Honestly, a lot of people here
at Saratoga are. It's one of the reasons I love
coming here.

Speaker 3 (02:05):
Question asked Andrew yesterday when he joined us. It seems
like this summer at Satoga has been so difficult to
handicap with so many favorites on the board. You gave
us the stead last week favorites. Any it seems like
that has just been the theme of the summer at
the spot.

Speaker 1 (02:21):
Yeah, it as. It's been a really tough meat, uh,
in terms of finding those horses, because I think what
we've seen is only about thirty four percent of favorites
have actually been winning through the first seven weeks of
the meet. And here's kind of the really surprising number,
which is horses that are below even money, so like
four to five, three to five. These are horses that

(02:41):
Andrew and I would know. Listen, these are kind of
mortal locks. You know, a lot of cases you're playing
a track like a cineboy of downs. You just put
the whole bank account on a horse like that because
there's no way they're gonna lose. Here, they're only winning
fifty percent of the time, So that's really surprising that
horses that are one to five, two to five are
not really winning at the rate they should be. So

(03:02):
that's been a part of it, and you know, it
just speaks to the competitiveness of this overall meat that
you have so many great trainers, so many great jockeys,
so many great horses coming in from different circuits, coming
up from Kentucky, coming in from California, coming up from Florida,
coming up from the mid Atlantic, and running up here.
So it's been a great meat, but it's been a
hard one. If you can find a price, you're making
hay for the day.

Speaker 5 (03:23):
Well, actually, you both talk to me out of fierceness.

Speaker 4 (03:25):
So yeah, well, hey, I'm playing with gaz in the challenge,
so I've done my job.

Speaker 1 (03:33):
Yeah, you know, that was a prime example I think
of and Andrew. I'm interested in hearing your thoughts on this
as well, which is, you know, I didn't think he
could get the distance. That was my veigas that was
my biggest issue with him. And Johnny Velaska has made
a decision which was I thought so interesting, which was
I am going to give up ground and just keep

(03:55):
the horse happy, basically to go if as long as
he gets to do what he wants to do, which
is kind of running the clear near the front, we
can go a mile and a quarter. It's just when
I asked him to do something he doesn't want to
do that we have a problem. So he floated him
out in a way that I was surprised. You was
two to three wide most of the trip and yet
still had enough to hold off torpedo in at the end.

Speaker 4 (04:17):
Well, I think John Velaska has learned a lot in
the Jim Dandy, where he had a similar trip. He
was wide all the way around. He got comfortable and
it wasn't overly visually impressive, but he got it done
because he was comfortable. And when as a rider you
can let a horse do what the horse wants to do,
as opposed to trying to pigeonhole tactics and overmanaging, you

(04:38):
wind up with a horse that ultimately fires more often
than not. I gotta say, I really really wish he'd
have gotten a mile and a quarter on the first
Saturday in May as opposed to the fourth Saturday in August.

Speaker 1 (04:49):
That would have been a lot better for me.

Speaker 4 (04:51):
I still remember John Velaskaz at the half mile pole
of the Derby doing the look back, which is usually
the universal sign for I have a ton of horse.

Speaker 1 (04:59):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (05:00):
A sixteenth of a mile later he starts pumping and
he's got nothing.

Speaker 1 (05:04):
Yeah. And I don't think.

Speaker 4 (05:05):
John Velasquez is wrong very often on that, but yeah,
we're sorry about that one.

Speaker 1 (05:09):
Levac.

Speaker 4 (05:11):
I didn't think he was going to get a mile
in a quarter. I picked him third, so I at
least liked him a little bit. If Matthew here talked
you off of him completely, that's his problem.

Speaker 1 (05:20):
Yeah, so that was completely on me. I completely talked
him off. But uh yeah, great race though, amazing race.

Speaker 2 (05:28):
Our guys who have been helping us all season long,
Andrew Champagne, Matthew de Santas, both here in the same setting,
joined us here live on Fox Sports ninety five, nine
to nine eighty. We do have a card today. We
do have a card this weekend. I'm gonna defer to
Andrew Champagne first because Matthew, well, hang on, he did
send me a text and he said, I love a
horse this weekend, so you can build it that we
can talk about the rest of today. But I know

(05:49):
you said the I love a horse this weekend. So
Friday and then payoff that teazy text me earlier about sure.

Speaker 4 (05:57):
So if we're looking at Friday, my best bet of
the day comes in race number eleven. I don't think
we're going to get the nine to two morning line price, unfortunately,
but horse number five in race number eleven is a
single for me coming out of the brad Cox Barn
that's number five. Candy Girl goes second off the layoff
ram fairly well last time over the synthetic surface at

(06:18):
presque Isle. That was this one's first start in seven months.
I'm expecting a significant move forward against a group of
horses that have been at this level for quite a while. Uh,
Candy Girl has mentioned nine to two on the morning line.
I'll take the under on that. David Ragona, the morning
line man, usually does a tremendous job. I'm thinking we'll
get about three to one on this horse. I still

(06:39):
think that's reasonably fair. Is a single for me in
the multi race exotics and this is a very good
thing because Matthew, I don't know about you, but when
it comes to the twelfth race today, I don't have
a clue.

Speaker 1 (06:51):
Yeah, the all button is a good one. I did
that race. I did that. Yeah, it's a tough one.
I mean that's a maiden special weight. That's really tough.
And I'll be honest, I really like brad Cox horse
in the race right before that, the tenth Emirates Road,
the number four horse, also at nine to two in
the morning line, with many Franco aboard. I think that
one could move forward nicely from that last effort earlier

(07:11):
this month and just moving down in class a little bit.
Uh So I just have that one kind of circled
as a horse that might give you a little bit
of value. In one of the earlier races, I.

Speaker 5 (07:20):
Realized why we paired off the way we paired off,
uh and just got everything written out in paper.

Speaker 1 (07:25):
Goz is not to work computers. We both used the
Nira bets Apple I got. So that's that's why we
that's why we pair it off. That's that's how it
works exactly now.

Speaker 6 (07:35):
I so you guys have been way too nice to
each other, like I was expecting a lot more, a
lot more time.

Speaker 4 (07:41):
How long is this segment?

Speaker 1 (07:43):
Yeah? Yeah, And by the way, I think I felt
a sprinkle hold on everybody. Okay, we got there.

Speaker 4 (07:52):
There are kinds of people in the world. There are
people like Matthew Coast their way through life waiting for
people to do everything for them.

Speaker 1 (08:01):
Born on third base thought, I hit a triple exist.

Speaker 4 (08:04):
There's a lot of people in this grandstand behind us
right here.

Speaker 1 (08:07):
I couldn't fit that description right along with you.

Speaker 4 (08:10):
And then there's people like me who rather than being reactive,
are proaction and furthermore, Furthermore, you do not tempt the
wrath of the whatever from high atop the thing by
posting a ten day advanced weather forecast in Saratoga and say, oh,
it's gonna be so gorgeous and all of a sudden monsoons.

Speaker 1 (08:31):
Yeah. I love so I listen. I love horse racing Twitter.
It's I mean, Andrew knows, listen. That's how I got
to where I am is largely through social media and
just kind of engaging people and putting my ideas out
there and having fun with it. And I have never
seen a bigger group of just sky is falling Chicken.

(08:55):
Then just like the second of forecast comes out there
like there's a twenty seven percent. It's a power everybody.
Just start just the weekend ruined, ruin. Everything's coming off turf.
We got a schedule. We gotta start handicapping for a
sloppy track. I'm like, it's a twenty seven percent just rain,
but it's not sloppy.

Speaker 4 (09:16):
I One thing I will say, though, is I don't
know if any of you have seen the new Progressive
commercial where they try to make people not like their
parents and it's all about people watching the Weather Channel religiously.

Speaker 1 (09:27):
Yeah, that's horse racing. It really is it really is.

Speaker 5 (09:31):
I mean, listen, as long as long as it's a
you know, as long as they can run, I'm good.

Speaker 1 (09:35):
I can take a little rain. Yeah, you know, it's
I mean, it's just and listen, is it? Andrew knows
you have to change your handicapping perspective on some things.
When it's a wet track and when it's obviously off turf,
you're dealing with little other scratches. And from a betting standpoint,
I get it. When you go off t if there's two,
your betting interests, field sizes go down. It is an issue.
There's no choays about it. I'm not making light of that.
I'm making light of just the just the fever dream

(09:58):
that is horse racing Twitter sometimes and the fact that
people just go bonkers before they have any reason to
go bonkers, they go bonkers swiftly, am I right? Yes,
very swift yes.

Speaker 2 (10:08):
By the way, guys are Nira Bets Challenge. The final
race for our competition is about to go off here.
Oh yes, the final fight win. But unfortunately got I
took a horse. I took four to seven to ten here,
but I took the four lightning, mom, and I will
blame Brian Mariano if this is not cash, because I
don't think either one of you liked him today the four.

Speaker 1 (10:29):
But now he says it's lightning. I ready to want.
I mean Mic Maker has had a good meet. I'll
say that the trainer with one dollar try box.

Speaker 2 (10:36):
I need some help here, so it might not look good. Uh,
Matthew Desanas while this race is going to vast Andrews
picks for today. Anything that stood out to you that
you like on today's.

Speaker 1 (10:43):
Card, Yeah, like you said that Emirods Road. I think
in the tenth race, the number four is a little
bit interesting.

Speaker 4 (10:49):
Uh.

Speaker 1 (10:49):
The other one, I would say, if you're looking for
a horse in that final, which is a tough race,
that's a really tough race. I do kind of like
the ray Handle horse the number one in that race
a little bit.

Speaker 6 (10:59):
Uh.

Speaker 1 (10:59):
That's the words the nine to two with Dylan Davis
the board. Dylan's been having just a phenomenal meet and
has been riding incredibly well. So I think that's a
horse and Ray Handles a trainer that I have a
lot of respect for. I like Ray a lot, and
he tends to get his horses ready. I think this
one hasn't been running since Belmont at the Big A,
and it's interesting Ray decides to bring this horse up
here per final weekend. That might tell me the horse

(11:22):
might be a little bit more live than what you
might think, because he could easily hold this horse and
run him back an aqueduct next week and have no problem.
But the fact he's bringing this horse up here tells
you that he might be pretty live. All right.

Speaker 5 (11:36):
You lost gouts for a little bit of that one
because he's focused on losing to me.

Speaker 1 (11:41):
So this is another example. Again, this is another example
of a below even money horse that the number ten horse,
below even money horse went off at one to two
and just lost to a ray Handle horse. Do a
ray Handle horse jockey by Dylan Davis.

Speaker 5 (11:58):
Yep, I'd like to I know you guys are the
professional handicappers over here, but to Andrew Champagne Matthew Sants,
I'd like to invite you to the Lavac Race the
first week of the next year's meet, which I just
want again.

Speaker 1 (12:10):
I just want again. I'm gonna wear is the champion race.
I'm gonna wear my finest leathers. I'm gonna wear my
finest outfit. I'm gonna wear a three piece suit. I'm
just gonna come in there and just I'm just gonna
dress up for a really special day.

Speaker 4 (12:26):
You know what, I'm wear my finest University of Michigan apparel.

Speaker 5 (12:31):
I just want you guys to know that this year,
I got a call from Mark Bardak, who runs at
Louis Associates, the night before. Don't forget to wear pants tomorrow,
so I will not be dressed that nice, Just.

Speaker 1 (12:41):
So we're clear. Sometimes I sometimes listen, it's like everybody's
dreamed that when they wake up and they're like walking
around them in their underwear or something like that. Yeah,
we we don't want that. We don't want that in
the but listen, I was in the paddock earlier today
that somebody I was wearing shorts in the paddock. Listen,
the world change.

Speaker 5 (13:00):
I know, guys, you wanna do you want to explain yourself?

Speaker 1 (13:02):
Do you wanna?

Speaker 2 (13:04):
I'm texting Tony Alavado now striking distance was too far.

Speaker 1 (13:08):
He was right.

Speaker 4 (13:10):
To win.

Speaker 2 (13:11):
I gotta go back to Andrew, though, because I feel
like we didn't pay off my tea's there. You mentioned
a weekend horse that you liked. Who do you like
this weekend? It's Saturdays, It's Sunday. Do we count Monday's
the weekend. It's a long weekend for.

Speaker 1 (13:21):
The count's Money's a weekend. But I know Andrew likes
the horse on Saturday. Yeah.

Speaker 4 (13:25):
Like is a very reserved term. And I am going
to shout out a friend of mine by the name
of Todd shrub Todd, whatever you're going through. Hanging there, buddy.
I don't just like a horse tomorrow at Saratoga. I
love a horse tomorrow at Saratoga. We're gonna head to
the Prioris Race number ten. It's a great three stakes
event for three year old phillies. And I love the

(13:47):
outside horse number nine Bright work nine to two on
the morning line. I don't think you're gonna get that price.
I think you're probably going to get three to one,
seven to two. This is a horse that was entered
for the Grade one Test through a fit in the past,
wound up being scratched, came back with an absolutely incredible workout.
I thought she had a chance in the Test against
ways and means I think she is absolutely a horse

(14:10):
to beat in the Prioris against a decent group of sprinters,
but nowhere near the likes of Ways and Means, who
is probably the best three year old Philly sprinter on
the circuit right now, horse number nine, race number ten tomorrow.
That'll be my biggest win bet of the meat.

Speaker 1 (14:23):
All right, So so he got his do you have
one ahead of us? I will say, I will co
sign that I really do like bright Work a lot
in that race, and it was interesting unity and so
I know I really liked that horse. And I will say,
when you saw bright Work scratch out of the test,
you saw how gutted trainer John Ortiz was. And it

(14:45):
was at that moment I realized how cranked up that
he had that horse for that race, that they really
thought they were gonna win that one. I like a
horse in the very next race, the number seven, pondering
in the spin away six to one. Brendan Walsh has
a really good group of two year olds out in Kentucky.
He's bringing one of them up. This horse you want
to talk about winning under wraps. This horse wasn't even

(15:07):
asked to do anything in debut. This horse Luam Machada,
the jockey. They're sitting chili. And then there's what Lua
Machado did was just kind of continually looking back every
once in a while while having a tight rain on
the horse. Looked like he was actually trying to slow
the horse down to help make it more competitive. So
it wasn't such a blowout. Never even shook the reins,

(15:28):
let alone use the crop. And I mean this horse
six to one in the morning line. I really like
this one coming up from Kentucky. We've seen a lot
of Kentucky shippers do very well up here at Saratogin.

Speaker 4 (15:38):
Matthew, this is scary. I picked that horse. Second, I
think that horse is very very live.

Speaker 1 (15:43):
Yeah yeah, this is like this is like.

Speaker 2 (15:49):
This is like Caan and the Undertaker. They realized they
were brothers. They were fewed, but when they're a tag team,
they're look look at this live bac.

Speaker 1 (15:55):
That's the the too sweet there. That was a little
nw oo. Maybe maybe new school with the Well Club.

Speaker 2 (16:00):
I don't know what's going on there, Matthew.

Speaker 5 (16:03):
Well, I think it's I think I think we've become
the four Horsemen.

Speaker 1 (16:05):
I think I think are we the four horse WHOA,
I gotta be all right, well, do I love this guy?

Speaker 2 (16:15):
Son be strangers to us. We have so many things
we appreciate both of you. I know that the meat
is close to being over, but Nyra Bets never stops.

Speaker 1 (16:25):
Myra Bets indeed does never stop. So listen Nira Bets YouTube.
We got we don't just have Saratoga. We got del Mar.
They got a lot of big races out there. I
got Michelle U who's a great analyst out of the
West Coast coming on. She's talking about things with me
for this weekend. We got cap in the Card where
I go through every single race for the Monday Hopeful
Card Hopeful Stakes preview. We got a lot of great

(16:47):
analysis up on the website as well long shots of
the day. And then once Saratoga's over, we're gonna gonna
be covering Kentucky Gowns, del Mar, Monmouth Park, Keenland, Churchill.
We got you covered on Nyra Bets. He it's a
lot more than just New York. And of course we'll
still be covering Belmont at the big.

Speaker 4 (17:03):
Aging that Guz is cowering in the corner right now after.

Speaker 6 (17:09):
Listen, and your teammate over here, Andrew Champagne, this just
because you're not gonna get Saratoga. You still have seventy
five other outlets, right.

Speaker 4 (17:16):
Oh my goodness, Yes, Winners Anddwiners dot Com. That's the
day job.

Speaker 1 (17:20):
I'm the senior editor there.

Speaker 4 (17:22):
Hong Kong starting up in a week and a half.
Stay tuned to that simulcast feed for a whole bunch
of other stuff. Hopefully doing a lot of things with
the Alameda County Fair in Pleasanton, which is taking on
Golden Gate Fields as schedule, keeping myself busy and helping
to pay for a wedding coming up in ten months.

Speaker 1 (17:39):
I will also say, people listening out there, if you're
not watching Hong Kong racing, Japanese racing, you really are
missing out. It's a fantastic product. Andrew does a tremendous
job covering it, but it really is a great product.
And I can tell you there are going to be
three horses from Japan running in the Breeders Cup Classic
this year at del Mar. For every young who finished

(18:00):
third in the Kentucky Derby is coming over. Dermasodagaki, who
finished second in the Breeders Cup last year, is coming over.
And then USh Patassoro, who is a freak of a
horse who won the Saudi Cup two years ago is
also coming over. They're they're all very live in that right.

Speaker 5 (18:14):
So next season, next meet team to say his team champagne,
I love I think we went.

Speaker 2 (18:20):
Yeah you and Andrew, I love that idea. But the
only problem is that the last time you brought Matthew
C four. Uh, I don't have C four for you.
And however, wait a second, I think.

Speaker 1 (18:32):
I have something just as good.

Speaker 2 (18:33):
I have a half drunk Jerry McNamara here, I drank
the other half. I want you to take that, but
I also want to we'll decide between the bread.

Speaker 1 (18:45):
Thank you so much for the missing Thank you my pressure,
Thanks for having me.

Speaker 5 (18:49):
You guys are you guys are the absolute best Matthew
Santis campaign.

Speaker 1 (18:54):
This has been so much fun.

Speaker 5 (18:55):
I cannot wait for next year for us just to
all work together and fight each other and then just
so you know, sorry, Andrew, you're gonna lose.

Speaker 1 (19:01):
Guys. Has never beat me at anything. Yeah, we're rolling,
we're rolling.

Speaker 2 (19:06):
I got I got trophies on my desk, I got
I got saying that.

Speaker 4 (19:10):
But you've also got a raider head on your head,
so he's really winning here, nobody.

Speaker 1 (19:15):
He's a he's a Ears fan for me. That's here.
We go, get it here, let's go. All right, I've
here three four. iHeartRadio music. That's
