Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hey, coach is Shane, how you doing good?
Speaker 2 (00:02):
Are you doing Shane? Good? Good?
Speaker 1 (00:04):
He I appreciate you calling in for our listeners. I'll
be out there tomorrow night calling the Paint Valley UNIODA game.
And you know, Coach, I know talking to my brother
Matt earlier about his Uniota squad, he he's really speaking
highly of your group and the danger that you present
in terms of some of the matchups. And as I
(00:26):
had a chance to watch you a couple of times
this week, I thought some of that was on display. Again,
your schedule continues to be really really good. Circleville North
Adams there back to back nights. I thought you did
some really good things. Obviously they present some tough matchups
on the defensive end. Just talk to me about the
week and how do you think the guys have responded.
Speaker 2 (00:45):
Oh, we had a big week this week, you know. Obviously,
Twitt the end of this season, like you said, Circleville
and North Adams, they're playing some of their best ball
right now. North Adams, I believe, is what number two,
number seventeen like a a state. But I think our
guys we stepped up to the challenge and even with Circleville,
and they were down a guy one of their starters,
(01:06):
but then they had other guys that hadn't played before
throughout the week that was out through injuries. One of
their top guys that came back that game that we played.
So I mean for our guys, we responded and we
played well, and we're just looking to build off of
each game and trying to get better. I thought we
played well defensively. We had some obviously some situations where
(01:27):
turnovers kind of hurt us, a couple of situations and
just transition defense. But overall for the week that we've
had so far and then going into tomorrow, our kids,
their their energy has been up. Nothing's have We've We've
kind of just continue to look forward to the next
one and we see the things that we're doing and
working on and getting better. We're not looking at the
(01:47):
wins and losses right now. We're just trying to work
on us as a group and trying to get better
defensively and offensively and take whatever we can go into
the next season as well. Well.
Speaker 1 (01:55):
It makes total sense to me. I see some stretches
of play where you play a really really good five
six seven minute stretches that maybe you have two or
three stretch minute stretch where it gets away from you.
I know, Northden nothing. I thought you had a good
time out, got right back into it a little bit.
I guess that's the word I hear all the coaches
saying going into tournament. It's just it's the consistency as
(02:17):
you going to a matchup like tomorrow night, just being
able to try to put it together for thirty two minutes.
I mean, I know that's cliche, but is that is
that kind of what we're all aiming for this time
of year?
Speaker 2 (02:26):
You're right, coach, and as all of us, you know,
the coaches out there. Everyone's good at what they do,
you know, and then their craft. But you know, coaches,
no matchups. You know, matchup plays a big role in everything.
Used to do a little bit of good before you know,
going into the next season just to s see and
then you know coaching. But as far as that goes,
you know, we're just having our guys try to explore
or explore some of the matchups as much as we
(02:49):
can in certain situations. But for us, I think we've
our group were coming together collectively just on a different
defensive end playing playing better right now, think as well,
which kind of presentable the danger for us. But at
the same time, everyone's dangerous right now. You know, it's
everyone's looking at that next season, as you know, do
or die. You win, you go on, you lose, you
(03:10):
go home, and nobody wants to go home around this
time of a year. So you look to be that
Cinderella team or whatever team it is, to continue to
just be better and be prepared and ready for that moment.
Speaker 1 (03:19):
Well again, coach on WKKJ tomorrow night with Unioda. And
then in the tournament, I've got your Division six, the
four to thirteen matchup you'll you'll go to Valley. I
know the Valley regular season game didn't didn't go real
well for you, but if I remember right, that was
some bizarre foule trouble situation. No excuse, it's just that's
the way the game unfolded, and I'm sure you learn
a lot from that. Tell us about that match up
(03:41):
a little bit.
Speaker 2 (03:42):
Yeah, that's a really good team man, and our boys.
You know, obviously the first matchup against those guys, we
didn't we didn't play our best ball, and I honestly
don't feel like we've got to play our besket ball.
Yet you know, we're making strides and moments throughout a
certain games, but just working on putting it all together.
But you know, going into that next game, when we
go against Valley, into that next one, it's gonna be
(04:02):
a battle of those guys are good. They transitioned well,
they matchupwise, they got heighted, they got inside inside presence,
and they got guards. So for us, it's just making
sure we do our job of playing defense, containing the ball,
keeping guys in front of us, and then taking care
of the ball. We talked about it that practice today.
You know, we look at film. We are a heavy
(04:24):
film team, watch our film on us to try to
watch our mistakes, and we kind of circled it up
into two things today and it was just take care
of the ball and be disciplined on the defensive end.
And when we do those two things consistently for thirty
two plus minutes, we give ourselves the best chances. But
when we have those two or three minutes of lapsters
(04:45):
and the other team are not having those lapses, it
kind of puts us in a situation and it's recognizing
those moments and owning it as a group. So for
our boys today, we sat down and we just they
owned it, you know, and they looked at these films
from these last two weeks and then they looked at
the positive things we did too, because there's some a
lot of good things we did in that moment of
those both of those games, but just putting it all together,
(05:05):
you know, and going into it. But we're gonna be
prepared for Valley, and I'm sure values they're well coached,
they're gonna be prepared for us as well, and I
think it's gonna be a good battle going into that game.
You know.
Speaker 1 (05:16):
Coach. On our show here, we may we may do
some things as we transition into spring with a different
type of show, but as far as our basketball show,
this is gonna be our last week. So that's why
I definitely wanted to get you on to talk about
your your seniors a little bit this evening.
Speaker 2 (05:29):
Well, I appreciate it. Yeah, we got our senior group.
We're in a four senior heavy group this year, more than
I had last year. We had two. But with our
guys this year, our main two obviously with Carson and Braylan.
Braylan break his thousand points yesterday. It was a special
moment for him, and Carson is not too far from it.
I'm hoping he eventually digs to it as well. But
even if he doesn't, those two guys have have been
(05:52):
awesome for us this year, just not just on the court,
but off the court, just holding our guys accountable. And
then our other guys. Colton he was there last year
but never got to see the floor one time last year,
So just having him there and having his presence UH
is big. He's a big voice for those guys. UH.
And then our other guard, Jackson Emo, He's he's awesome man.
(06:14):
He's he's one of the guys where you don't hear
his name a lot, but he does so much for us.
I was talking to him about the other night on
his defense and he's one of our guys that will
get up in you more than some of the other
guys will. And he's very aggressive, uh more than some
of the other guys. And and for him, he picks
up files though. And I tell him all the time,
I said, listen, I'm I'm I can I can handle that.
(06:35):
We can dial that back, but we can't pick it
up sometimes. So he's one of our guys, and with
those four guys, they've all brought something special to this
group this year. I've been so happy and please and
blessed to have those guys on this team and be
back with me again this year, and and and just
help build this program and put it forward, put forward,
uh the effort that I've requested for this year to
(06:56):
show the younger group, because we've got a lot of
younger guys down there and it looked up to these
older guys and for them to hold that and be
able to kind of walk them through the ropes and
show them the right things that we need to do.
And that's not just on the court. Off the court
as well. It's been good man, and it's been a
fun group. These guys have been holding each other accountable
and keeping each other together. So I've been blessed. Honestly,
(07:19):
I don't care about the wins and losses of how
that goes, but for us as a group, we've had
a great year this year, a great time, great experience,
and then we've gotten better from last year. So that's
the biggest thing of just improvement.
Speaker 1 (07:31):
Yeah, that makes total sense, Coach. I could hear it
in your voice. All year, going all the way back
to the preseason when we talked about the team and
throughout the year, I could just hear it in your
voice all year, win or lose, you just you could
tell that you thoroughly enjoyed the group, and you highlighted
Bray and his career numbers very very impressive. Carson's having
a single season's that's hasn't been you know, I don't
(07:54):
know if it's been duplicated here in about six seven
eight years of Paint Valley. So yeah, just a special gleeve.
Speaker 2 (08:02):
He's gone. He's went.
Speaker 1 (08:03):
Well.
Speaker 2 (08:03):
We've had thirteen games straight with double doubles with Carson.
I mean he's had nights where he's you know, highlighted
twenty eight, twenty nine, almost clipped a thirty a couple
of times. He's I call him my walking thirty. He
can get it any night when he wants to go
get it, you know. And that's that's the special talent
he has. And uh, you know even with last night,
(08:24):
you know the game, how that went, and we battled
with North Adams and they're a great team, well coached team,
and both of those guys when we have both, I
think Bray finished with twenty nine and Carson finished with
twenty one. So it's it feels, it's a good feeling
when you had those guys going together. A lot of
times throughout the season, we haven't had we'd have either
one or the other, and and to have that last night,
(08:47):
and that's what I told those guys. We can build
off of this, man. It's not just about you know,
the scoring and and one of you guys doing one
thing special than the other. It's just about collectively doing
it together as a group. So I'm please man, And
not just with Carson, even Colton scoring wise, he's been
a big inside present for us, something that we didn't have.
(09:08):
Braylan was in the post a little bit for us
last year, and with Colton it gives him that break
and give us an opportunity to give us that presence
and he just kind of demands a lot of respect
down there. So just all four of them, they bring
something different. They've always brought something different, and they continue
to build off of each other and just continue to
work together and bring these younger groups, the younger guys
up together to what we can just build off on
(09:31):
our program.
Speaker 1 (09:32):
Well, Coach, can't thank you enough. For always calling in
and talking about your kids and the way you represent
Payt Valley. I'll be out there calling that for WKKJ
tomorrow night. Best of luck in that one as well
as your upcoming tournament.
Speaker 2 (09:44):
I appreciate it. Coach. Thank you, guys, you have a
good evening.
Speaker 1 (09:46):
Thank you.
