Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hey, coach is Shane you hear me right?
Speaker 2 (00:03):
Yeah?
Speaker 1 (00:03):
You good? Good. I appreciate you calling in. Had an
opportunity to see your kids play a little bit this week,
and just some some really good challenges. You know, obviously
the Dina side, a team that really gored you well
in the scrimmage area. And then on the other side
of that, you play a Westfall team who I think
some SVC teams have found out on certain nights they're
(00:25):
really hard to go when they're on and and that's
kind of what you run into there. But again, challenge
by challenge, you guys continue to grow. Talk to us
about the last week and and what you think you've
been able to get out of it.
Speaker 2 (00:37):
Yeah, it was. It was definitely a it was a
big week for us. You know, like you said, we
we went out on Tuesday and played a Dina and
gotta give a lot of credit to a Dina.
Speaker 3 (00:48):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (00:49):
You know, it was a close game. You know, we
were we were up at the end of the first
and you know, it was a five point game a
half they were up, and they went on a run
there in the third and and did a good job
of just smoke in the clock and putting it in
a tough situation too. You know, they're keeping the ball
away and we got to put them out the line
and kind of ended up stretching that lead down there
(01:10):
at the end of the end of the fourth. Uh
just you know, just because they did a really good
job of buying into the game plan. So a lot
of credits coach O Laker and that, and you know,
those kids really doing a good job. And you know,
I said, our kids come out, came out in a
big time environment and and maybe just they came out hot,
but maybe just let that environment get to them a
little bit. But I was really proud about how we
(01:32):
bounced back against west Fall last night. You know, we
we played in the up and down game, and I
know I listened to a few of the that the
west Fall boys talk, and you know it was it
was up and down. That's how we like to play.
And I don't think a lot of people realize just
how fast we really do play, and especially over there
at o UC, I think it kind of maybe shocked
(01:53):
them a little bit. But I tell you what, that
team can score, Like you said, they can score and
bunches and they got some kids that can play and
you know, while while we didn't come out on top,
I felt like that was a big, big game for
us because we you know, we we proved ourselves that
we can score on good teams that you know that
have have done good job. And the SVC and I
think they finished fourth, and uh, you know they beat
(02:14):
some some big time teams. They beat you in Yoda.
They played it close with Megs, and you know we
kind of had them, you know, had them, had them
close there, just just dug ourselves just a little bit
too big of a hole. But you know, then we
we played a Miller's Sport tonight. We fell shorter miller Sport.
We just kind of ran out of gas. And I
don't know if we just didn't have legs or what
(02:35):
was going on today, but we just wasn't our night tonight.
But uh, I was just proud of our boys. We
took a big step. You know, we played three so
it's just the eight teams and you know, I won,
in my opinion, one really really good Westall team. And
you know, we we had some bumps, we had some
bruises coming out of that, but we're much much better
because of this week.
Speaker 3 (02:57):
Ninety four Country w k K J Chilicothie for joining us.
We are talking to our CCA boys basketball coach Matt
Jude coach. We heard that. I think it was either
earlier this week or last week where our CCA had
to take a couple of days off just because of
all the sickness that was going around in the our
(03:18):
CCA community. Has your team been impacted by that?
Speaker 2 (03:24):
Yeah, that was that was tough for us for our CCA.
We had three days that we were out and we
had two games that were canceled too, pretty big time
games for US. Genoah Christian who you know, they've they've
done some really good things up in Columbus there on
probation this year for the OHSA, and they've won thirteen games,
(03:45):
I believe, and they're just a good team. That was
going to be a good challenge for us. And then
then we had to cancel a game against Ironton Saint Joe,
who you know, if we were to ever joined the OHSA,
they would be in our Southeast district for for Division seven.
So we were really looking forward to that test and
kind of seeing how we matched up with the district,
and we had to end up canceling both of those games.
(04:08):
And our team was hit hard with it. I know,
we had one practice on Friday morning of that week
where we had I believe seven guys there because out
of the fifteen guys, the other eight were six. Uh
and we're home, you know, home in bed. So I
really hit our team pretty hard. And we were on
a we were on a little bit of a a
winning streak there. We were playing some of the best
(04:29):
basketball the season in my opinion, and h not to
make excuses at all, but you know, we we got
hit with the sick bug. And you know, we're still
recovering from that, not just conditioning wise, but just yelling
back together as a team after not having practices for
you know, three or four days and then you know,
being off a game for over a week and a
half and you know, so we're justin and we're slowly
(04:51):
coming out of it. But yeah, we we were pretty
pretty hard by that.
Speaker 1 (04:56):
Well, coach, I continue to be impressed by your aggressiveness
in terms of skill and you know, putting your kids
in these different situations. Just talking to n J. Kite
there Vinton County, sounds like you guys are gonna be
able to make up one of those games I know
you weren't on the original schedule together, but they had
a team not be able to play them. You've had
some teams not play you, and he said, you guys
are gonna get together this week and play.
Speaker 2 (05:18):
Yeah, we're gonna go down there on Monday, and that's
another test we're looking forward to. You know what, Vin County. Uh,
they're good, you know, good program and I know you've
brother had a huge part in that building that program
down there, and uh, we're excited to get down and
play some good basketball. And for us, you know, that's
gonna be, that's gonna be. Uh. I think maybe five
games in a row with out of practice. We don't
(05:39):
practice on Wednesdays. So we played Tuesday this last week,
played yesterday, we played today, play tomorrow, and then we
play on month or on Monday, you know, without a practice.
But you know, it's just one of those things where
we've got to experience this. We've got to get kind
of caught up and play this competition and this is
only making us better. And we might take some lumps
(06:00):
and there might be some ugly losses in there, but
you know, every every now and then, uh, you know,
we'll come out on the other side, you know, like
we did against Welton, and I know there will be
a few more this year that we'll be able to
do that same thing. And you know, our boys are
getting better every game. And if we were to go
back to the beginning of the season and we're a
look at where we're at now, I don't think people
would recognize who we who we are. And you know,
(06:23):
we've improved every game and we've we've made tough for
some teams. And even though we haven't gotten over that
hump a bunch of times, we've we've still learned a
lot and we've grown. And I feel like, you know,
respect is not given at all, it's one hundred percent earned,
and I feel like we're starting to earn some of
that respect, uh, you know for some local teams. And
you know, our boys have deserved that. You know, they
(06:43):
work hard, they put in the hours, they put in
the time, you know, just like everybody else, and they
can play basketball. And I think they're starting to prove
that to the local area here.
Speaker 1 (06:53):
Well, no question, Well coach, you you've been so good
to call in each every week. Before we get you
off here this last time, talk about your senior force.
Little bit.
Speaker 2 (07:02):
This is a special group. I know I've mentioned him
multiple times on here, but we got three really good
seniors and they're they're they're great basketball players, but more importantly,
they're just great young men. You know. Starting it out,
we got Sam Clevenger. He you know, he he's been
a rock for this program since I stepped into to
be the head coach three years ago. He's he's bought
(07:23):
in completely from the beginning, and he's never wavered and
never you know, you never question where he's at. He
is one of the most steady people I've ever met
in my life. I would I would just call him consistent.
And it may not seem like a a super big compliment,
but I promise you it is that he's just extremely
consistent who he is and in his character and the
(07:45):
way he carries himself, and he's he's always the first
guy to build people up, and you know he has
he has played a major part of lay in our foundation.
He's got a great year. You know, last year he
was more of a scorer, and this year he's become
more of our big man and playing down low and uh,
you know, he's just he's done everything right, And I know,
(08:06):
you know, beyond basketball, I'm already trying to recruit him
back as a coach, you know, next year, because I
know and in whatever he does, he's going to make
an impact on the people that he's around. And we
have Daniel Garabedian who kind of likes Sam. He's he's
that same guy that you know, he's been here from
the beginning, since I stepped in. He's he's bought in.
He he was a part of our kind of our
(08:27):
makeshift Davy team, uh my first year three years ago,
which was made up of the Mad Traders and Suppressman
and we and we tried to play some some better
competition there and he bought into that and didn't you know,
he wasn't upset. He was the only sophomore on the team.
He was never upset one time. Uh. And and he
just got better and got better and better. And now
(08:48):
he's you know, now he's the engine for us. He's
the guy that kind of drives the ship and and
he really is our voice of our team. And so
I'm just really proud of him the man he is,
and and he's going to be successful in anything he's
doing and anything he does in life and everything he
accomplishes is going to be because he's a hard worker
and I'm just so proud of the man he is.
And then Gabe Bevin. You know, I'm sure a lot
(09:10):
of people have seen the gunk going viral on Facebook
and the athleticism that he has and the crazy highlight
plays that he has, but you know, he's just a
He's been a great teammate this year like he's been.
He didn't he didn't play for us last year, but
with that year off, he's really I feel like he's
really come back and without any hiccups or anything, he's
just fitting jailed right with the guys. And you know,
(09:31):
he is a He's another outstanding young man that's gonna
do great things and specifically do great things for the Lord.
And you know, I just I'm really excited to see
his growth, and you know, as he continues to just mature,
and you know, he's already really mature young man, but
as he gets older, it's gonna be he's gonna do
a lot of amazing things. So I mean, all in
(09:52):
the basketball court, we got three really really great seniors
that have built our program, but more importantly, off the
basketball court. We got three great young men that are
gonna be great, you know, great husbands and fathers one
day for their family. So that's the thing I'm most
proud of for these three.
Speaker 1 (10:06):
Well coach, really good stuff. Can't thank you enough for
calling in each and every week. Best of luck with
what you have coming up here and as you finish
a year strong. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (10:15):
I actually before I go, if you don't mind, I'd
also like to mention the girl seniors as well. Absolutely,
the Riley Elliott for the girls. She has just recently
scored on a thousand point. She's been a staple for
their program, building their program, being a part of it,
you know, since the very beginning when there was a
(10:35):
carpet on the gym floor at Brookside Church here and
that's where they played to begin with, you know, And
she has been she's been awesome and just laying the
groundwork and helping them build that girl's program up and continue.
I mean, they just had two huge wins last week
against Sugar Creek Christian and against Christian, both teams I
believe beat them by twenty the time before that they played,
(10:57):
and they came back and they got two wins over
those teams, and she was a huge far to that
and you know, she's just she's she's gonna be another
you know, great, great young lady, and she's you know,
she's going to do often things for the Lord as well.
And then Jade Withrow, I don't know if I've ever
seen a player improve more than Jade with Throw has
this season. Not that she was a bad player at all,
(11:17):
she was not. She's a two or three year starter.
I believe she's a three year starter. You know, she's
done really really well in the basketball program. But this
year I have I've just seen a jump and you know,
just the even the first couple of games to now,
I believe she was one of the big reasons that
they've been turning this season around. And just she's played
amazing health defense, She's she's been able to drive the
(11:38):
ball to the to the hole a little bit, and
you know, she's done great things on the basketball court
and a lot of that success is also owed to her.
So just wanted to highlight our two girl seniors also,
and and you know we'll have her senior right tomorrow
over at ouc Uh noon for the girls and then
six pm for the boys. So anybody wants to come
up check out the Eagles you over at the Shoemaker Center.
Speaker 1 (12:01):
Okay, so noon for the girls, six for the boys.
Really yeah, I appreciate you doing that and getting them
on here as well. That's outstanding. That's good stuff, coach, can't.
I can't tell you enough how excited I am for
you and what you're building there. Thanks so much for
all the effort and promoting and talking to us each
and every week. Good luck to you.
Speaker 2 (12:22):
Hey, thanks Sane. I appreciate you guys having us on.
It's been a lot to this this year. Thank you,
Thank you.
