Speaker 1 (00:00):
Michael A. Dishop click number sixty two for us. This
was such an exciting moment last night during the Olympics
and gets things going, not holding back. That's the forty
forty highly do right on jump number one, going for
the absolute biggest trick of the day. Thus are all smiles.

(00:22):
Eileen understands how big a moment this is, not just
for her but for China and for what she's trying
to do time not just about perfect. Yeah, what she's
trying to do is pretty obvious if you're not hip
to this story. This Eileen Goo or google a Ling
as she's known since she's competing for the Communist Chinese

(00:44):
despite being American born. She's born in San Francisco. Yeah,
that's correct, which fits. But anyway, Yes, she has renounced
her US citizenship. She want to admit that, though why
she and her sponsors at at one point kind of
admitted it red bulls of big sponsor hers, but then
they kind of questioned it, and now she just doesn't.

(01:04):
She says, I feel every bit as American as I
do Chinese. She won't answer questions about it, so she
renounced to make any sense. By the way, what's that
that you could have those feelings. They don't make any sense. Well, look,
unless she's incredibly naive, and I don't think she is.
Here's what's going on. She's this hot young woman, looks

(01:29):
like a model. Where's lots of makeup always, even when
she competes, she looks like she's going to the Oscars. Okay,
she's an enormous brand in China, and she and her
I'm sure, I'm sure the look she she left the
United States for our country exactly, great, great pr coup
for them exactly. And and because she's a good looking

(01:52):
woman and and building a brand, and she's very good
at what she does. I mean, there's no denying that
you get comforts like this and Yahoo Sports, I lean
Goua is one of the five this free skiers in
the world. Graceful and daring and utterly fearless off the skis,
she possesses model level poise, speaks two languages, fluently plays
death piano, and is preparing to attend Stanford this fall,

(02:12):
and exhibits the kind of compassion and empathy that allows
her millions of social media followers to feel they truly
know her. Raised in the U S Scheme for China,
I leaned Goo is Beijing's most fascinating athlete unfreaking beliefs.
So I wonder how much money the Communist Party gave

(02:32):
her family or whatever to get them to do that,
because you you wouldn't do that unless you were getting
something out of it. Well, I just I think, as
I said, she is an enormous brand in China. She's
already all over advertisements and endorsements and is a sought
after TV guest. She speaks fluent Mandarin. Her mom was
Chinese immigrated to the United States, or dad was American.

(02:54):
He's nobody can find him or talk to him, evidently, Um,
but she made the decision to renounce her citizen ship
and ski for the most awful repressive regime on earth, clearly,
I mean in terms of capability to oppress the world.
They make the Nazis look like punks. Well, how we

(03:15):
haven't may be able to shift gears on this. It's
amazing to me go back to when if you're old enough,
you remember what the Olympics were like when it was
US against the c c c P back in the day,
US and the Soviet Union in the Olympics, And imagine
if some born in the United States person had renounced
their US citizenship and it was now competing for the
Soviet Union. We wouldn't have held them up as a

(03:38):
model of something that's exciting and fun and isn't it great.
We wouldn't have called them the most fascinating athletes. No,
we would not. No. Indeed, Yeah, so she's a either
such a greed head she's overlooking the horrors of the
Chinese regime, or be she doesn't care but the idea

(04:02):
and oh so the reason I turned off the Olympics
and discussed last night. Um as the American announcers were
gushing over this check, just gushing over how interesting it
was and how multicultural she was. And you know, Mike
Tarico at the beginning, it was like he wanted to
sleep with her. It was just disgusting, just the flattery

(04:26):
at all and just never even tipping their cap to
the fact that she had renounced her citizenship in favor
of the most repressive regime probably in the history of
earthly Again, in terms of capability, I just I don't know,
but she's she's very savvy, she said on Instagram. I

(04:49):
am proud of my heritage and equally proud of my
American upbringings. The opportunity to inspire millions of young people
where my mom was born during the Beijing Olympic Winner
Games is a once in a lifetime opportunity to help
promote the sport I love through skiing. I hope to
unite people, promote common understanding, create communication, and forge friendships

(05:09):
between nations. Now I can you can just imagine the
way they portray her in China? Oh yeah, in the
in the ongoing battle to convince their population that their
system is better than ours. Here's this fabulously talented, good
looking woman who left the United States, gave up her
citizenship to come join our side. How much better we

(05:30):
are than they are? You know, when we've talked about
China's whole of society effort to take over the globe
and defeat the United States, it's clear now, I mean
it's utterly clear that that's what they're doing. Uh. Figure skaters,
Beverly's you and Ashley Lynne are also uh competing for
the communist Chinese as our several hockey players American hockey players.

(05:55):
So is some of it? Is it just easier to
make the team or they'll put you on the team
because they're so aded to have the uh the story
in China. Yeah, you gotta think about it kind of
like college recruiting. If the Chinese are deficient in a
certain area, say they're hockey team and they're really good
American players who can't make the American team but have
some loose claim to Chinese heritage, Well, then yeah, the

(06:18):
Chinese governmental recruit them. Now, exactly how they recruit them
and what they offer them, I don't know. And and listen,
I am willing to grant a nineteen year old hockey
player or skier or something like that is just dopey
and doesn't understand the geopolitical implications of it. Um. You know,
I'm not calling for a life sentence for any of these.
Given you up your your U S citizenship though that's

(06:39):
a heck of a thing, and then being dishonest about
it not admitting it. I haven't tried to have it
both ways to become a giant marketing force in both countries. Sorry,
you don't lay down with the oppressive communist communists and
get an okay from me. No,

The Burden

The Burden

The Burden is a documentary series that takes listeners into the hidden places where justice is done (and undone). It dives deep into the lives of heroes and villains. And it focuses a spotlight on those who triumph even when the odds are against them. Season 5 - The Burden: Death & Deceit in Alliance On April Fools Day 1999, 26-year-old Yvonne Layne was found murdered in her Alliance, Ohio home. David Thorne, her ex-boyfriend and father of one of her children, was instantly a suspect. Another young man admitted to the murder, and David breathed a sigh of relief, until the confessed murderer fingered David; “He paid me to do it.” David was sentenced to life without parole. Two decades later, Pulitzer winner and podcast host, Maggie Freleng (Bone Valley Season 3: Graves County, Wrongful Conviction, Suave) launched a “live” investigation into David's conviction alongside Jason Baldwin (himself wrongfully convicted as a member of the West Memphis Three). Maggie had come to believe that the entire investigation of David was botched by the tiny local police department, or worse, covered up the real killer. Was Maggie correct? Was David’s claim of innocence credible? In Death and Deceit in Alliance, Maggie recounts the case that launched her career, and ultimately, “broke” her.” The results will shock the listener and reduce Maggie to tears and self-doubt. This is not your typical wrongful conviction story. In fact, it turns the genre on its head. It asks the question: What if our champions are foolish? Season 4 - The Burden: Get the Money and Run “Trying to murder my father, this was the thing that put me on the path.” That’s Joe Loya and that path was bank robbery. Bank, bank, bank, bank, bank. In season 4 of The Burden: Get the Money and Run, we hear from Joe who was once the most prolific bank robber in Southern California, and beyond. He used disguises, body doubles, proxies. He leaped over counters, grabbed the money and ran. Even as the FBI was closing in. It was a showdown between a daring bank robber, and a patient FBI agent. Joe was no ordinary bank robber. He was bright, articulate, charismatic, and driven by a dark rage that he summoned up at will. In seven episodes, Joe tells all: the what, the how… and the why. Including why he tried to murder his father. Season 3 - The Burden: Avenger Miriam Lewin is one of Argentina’s leading journalists today. At 19 years old, she was kidnapped off the streets of Buenos Aires for her political activism and thrown into a concentration camp. Thousands of her fellow inmates were executed, tossed alive from a cargo plane into the ocean. Miriam, along with a handful of others, will survive the camp. Then as a journalist, she will wage a decades long campaign to bring her tormentors to justice. Avenger is about one woman’s triumphant battle against unbelievable odds to survive torture, claim justice for the crimes done against her and others like her, and change the future of her country. Season 2 - The Burden: Empire on Blood Empire on Blood is set in the Bronx, NY, in the early 90s, when two young drug dealers ruled an intersection known as “The Corner on Blood.” The boss, Calvin Buari, lived large. He and a protege swore they would build an empire on blood. Then the relationship frayed and the protege accused Calvin of a double homicide which he claimed he didn’t do. But did he? Award-winning journalist Steve Fishman spent seven years to answer that question. This is the story of one man’s last chance to overturn his life sentence. He may prevail, but someone’s gotta pay. The Burden: Empire on Blood is the director’s cut of the true crime classic which reached #1 on the charts when it was first released half a dozen years ago. Season 1 - The Burden In the 1990s, Detective Louis N. Scarcella was legendary. In a city overrun by violent crime, he cracked the toughest cases and put away the worst criminals. “The Hulk” was his nickname. Then the story changed. Scarcella ran into a group of convicted murderers who all say they are innocent. They turned themselves into jailhouse-lawyers and in prison founded a lway firm. When they realized Scarcella helped put many of them away, they set their sights on taking him down. And with the help of a NY Times reporter they have a chance. For years, Scarcella insisted he did nothing wrong. But that’s all he’d say. Until we tracked Scarcella to a sauna in a Russian bathhouse, where he started to talk..and talk and talk. “The guilty have gone free,” he whispered. And then agreed to take us into the belly of the beast. Welcome to The Burden.
