We check out a new song called "Thick Neck" by rapper/guitarist Ando San.

We're intrigued by Ando San's whole vibe, his metal vocalist-turned-rapper transition and whether or now he's a cat guy.

Speaker 1 (00:02):
Welcome to at First Listen to the Music podcast for
people who don't always get the hype but want to.
I'm Andrew, I'm Dominique.

Speaker 2 (00:21):
We're doing another mini episode today for Ando song and
his song thick.

Speaker 1 (00:27):
Neck, released November fifth, Hot Off Press, Hot Off the Press.

Speaker 2 (00:33):
First you heard it here.

Speaker 1 (00:34):
First heard it here first by Ono So or Ando.

Speaker 2 (00:38):
So I'm feeling a Japanese reference here with the song,
so I would go Ono song certainly.

Speaker 1 (00:48):
That's where I'm I'm at right now me as well.
I I found this song it's just exploring YouTube music
tab and I was attracted to the esthetic and I'm

(01:09):
glad I clicked. I'm very intrigued it. It seems like
to me that there's there may have been a recent rebrand.
Just based on his socials, there's like not a lot there.

Speaker 2 (01:24):
You know, when a musical artist deletes all of their
posts that something is about.

Speaker 1 (01:30):
To drop, something has happened. Yeah, because he's been coming
out with music for a while. And it says here
in his Google panel that he started out as a
metal vocalist when he was thirteen, and I definitely hear
that influence. That's not that wouldn't be the first metal
vocalist turned rapper that we've talked about on this show.

(01:52):
Missy from The X is on a similar trajectory. Kind
of reminds me of her the energy, not really the sound.

Speaker 2 (02:02):
And so yeah, let's just get into a little clip
from the song thick Knack Thick Nick. It does seem
like the guitars are played by mister Son.

Speaker 1 (02:25):
Yeah, mister Yeah, he's a There's a lot on Instagram
of him playing guitar and also rapping.

Speaker 2 (02:34):
He's very good at both things. This I was trying
to place, like what this rift reminds me of. It's
like definitely early two thousands inspired, like Limp Biscuit seven
US type of choppy riff that you can kind of loop,
uh and he he just he wraps over it.

Speaker 1 (02:57):
It goes well with the with the rap. Like it's
funny because I feel like when someone starts rapping, you
start saying hip hop, R and B. Yeah, but I
wouldn't call it.

Speaker 2 (03:10):
I don't know myself all the time, Like rap isn't
necessarily a style of music, like it's a style of vocalizer.

Speaker 1 (03:18):
Yes, yeah, totally totally, But like I think that there
the the riff goes with that, and I I feel
like we're bringing that, We're bringing the h string guitar
into the conversation of pop music. I mean this is pop.

Speaker 2 (03:35):
Yeah for sure. I mean it's totally a credible, like
modern hip hop sound, but it's using aggressive, like metal
sort of production, and I think it does a good
job of finding a balance between that those metal sounds
of heavy metal tones and production with also a good

(03:58):
vocal sound and a good way to layer his his
wrap over top of the riff.

Speaker 1 (04:04):
Yeah, I'm really into it. This. This seems like a
show where you could thrash and be around a bunch
of the nicest people. Yeah, Like I can imagine such
respectful thrashing and and and sweet conversations of just positive

(04:25):
vibes with like goth undertones.

Speaker 2 (04:30):
Yeah, it's one of those. So apparently he's playing in
New York next month as we're recording this, So it's
one of those shows that it's like, I can't I
just want to see what that crowd is mean. I
just want to know who's going.

Speaker 1 (04:44):
This seems like. Yeah, as I said, I think this,
this seems like the type of show that I would
enjoy going to.

Speaker 2 (04:51):
It's a venuehere. I've seen a lot of metal bands.

Speaker 1 (04:54):
Which is that's I I want to see. Yeah, what
is it going to be live? I mean, I think, uh,
I I'm interested. I'm interested in the vibes. I like
the songs. I really enjoyed, Like I really enjoy the
musicianship that he's that he's bringing. I'm interested to see

(05:16):
that live because I feel he seems like a real musician.

Speaker 2 (05:20):
Yeah you don't. You don't get it on the track.
I after looking up what his social media is, like,
it's like, Okay, confirmed he really does play guitar. Confirmed,
he's actually really, really fucking good at guitar. And this
is just the song, the particular song he made, so
it's you would expect that he's going to be playing

(05:41):
guitar during his show.

Speaker 1 (05:41):
Yeah, it's not necessary. Yeah, Like I agree, you were
like it was.

Speaker 2 (05:45):
He doesn't have a friend who plays guitar, And he
was like, you want to make a beat out of that,
right right? Or someone else make me a beat out
of that?

Speaker 1 (05:52):
And then he goes over it, which like that is
the type of artist we love around here. Do you
love an auteur? You were a true musician who's passionate
about what they're doing, and I think there's so much
attention to all of this, and he really seems to
be hitting it hard right now with his career. He's
hitting his shride. So I would like to check out

(06:15):
the show and any of our listeners, I'd hope to
see there ono so on, and maybe when we go,
we can find out how to pronounce the name.

Speaker 2 (06:25):
Yeah, and what his whole vibe is like. The thing
I liked about the title is it reminds me of
you know, the area of your cat where it's like
under their chin, like between the chin and the chest.
That's what I call that neck meat. When you can pet,
when you can get a good like scretch in that area,

(06:46):
that's like the best part. So that's what the title
thick Neck reminded me of. I have three cats now,
so it's a lot of cats that I'm thinking.

Speaker 1 (06:56):
About it, dreaming about cat the.

Speaker 2 (06:59):
What is this second third comment on YouTube? I always
imagine how his cats get to enjoy these bangers before
we get to hear them, So I guess we have
a little something in common.

Speaker 1 (07:10):
Cat owning energy is coming off of this guy like crazy.

Speaker 2 (07:14):
And yet I see in the suggestions. He has a
song called Big Dog. Uh, okay, make a decision.

Speaker 1 (07:24):
Yeah, hello, controversy, Yeah, dog's drool is over, party canceled
starts here. Are you a dog guy protest? Yes? Yeah, no, seriously,
we're gonna show up with all our cats. Reminds me
of that tweet that's like pit bull Pitwell's like if

(07:45):
I were a dog, I'd be a chihuahuah.

Speaker 2 (07:52):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (07:53):
He's a great guy.

Speaker 2 (07:55):
All right. So that's an episode check out and a
song thick neck streaming everywhere. It's on YouTube. I wanted
to play guitar. That's a cool thing to do. Let
me do it later. And that was our first listen.
That's the thing we say to end the show. Yeah,
