Speaker 1 (00:01):
All right, we are live back here on Fox Sports.

Speaker 2 (00:04):
The Gambler Ryan Coyle joined alongside Nick McLay for our
weekly Football Is King Episode.

Speaker 1 (00:10):
First two episodes, Nick, we did a lot of NFL talk,
broke down the offseason, broke down the schedule, some of
the top games heading into next year. But today we're
going to dive into a little bit of the college ranks.

Speaker 2 (00:22):
And I think both college basketball and college football are
greatly benefiting from the ability to use nil and some
of these really good players staying in college because quite frankly,
they might even be making more in college than they
would on their rookie contract as a quarterback at some
of these schools. We're going to get into a lot
of the top guys today to look out for for

(00:44):
next season in college football at the quarterback spot. Some
of these guys have transferred where they're new gonna be
taking snaps out at their new school. But like a
guy like you know, Carson Beck transferring from Georgia to
Miami gets a lot of money in nil there. He
probably could have gone to the draft and been, you know,
a fifth or six round pick last year and said
he's back at Miami.

Speaker 1 (01:03):
I'm in a chance to really elevate his stock again.

Speaker 2 (01:05):
A guy like Garrett neus Meyer as well, that we'll
talk about at some point. But I think it's awesome
to see all these good quarterbacks coming back to college.
Gives us better product to watch, and it also gives
these guys a chance to really elevate their game. But
a lot of big time quarterbacks that get into tonight, Nick,
But welcome back, and how are we?

Speaker 3 (01:24):
Yeah, I'm excited. Like you said this, this is a
brand new era of college football and even basketball with
the with the nil all these guys coming back for
their for extra years for I mean not just money,
but I mean it's hard to turn down the money
that they're receiving. Like you said with Garrettsmeyer, of course,
I'm back. Guys that could have been drafted this past

(01:46):
season in a week quarterback class come back and you know,
fight for a spot, fight for a championship along with
getting that nil money. Guys like Drew Aller could have
even went. Guys like Kate Club maybe even could have went.
But I'm excited to get into it. A lot of
guys that we haven't even named yet.

Speaker 1 (02:06):
I'm excited.

Speaker 2 (02:06):
Can't wait Yeah, and the guy at the top of
the list is a guy that we saw in Spurts
last year for the first time, but doesn't they didn't
start the entire season, got I guess you could technical
club bench, but are out of the lineup went when
the real starter came back, and that's Arch Manning out
of Texas. You know, one of the biggest names just

(02:27):
due to the name in fact in college football over
the past decade or so, I would say, the hype
surrounding him coming out and credit to Arch and especially
in this era, the ability to sit there wait his turn,
and now he's gonna get the chance, and here in
a lot of buzz that you know, he's not just
gonna be a one and done year starter. He could
potentially play two years. Obviously, we'll see how this season unfolds.

(02:48):
But Nick, what we saw out of Arch Manning last year,
what impressed you the most and what are you looking
forward to the most? Seen him in Texas this upcoming season?

Speaker 3 (02:55):
Yeah, I mean he's he's like you said, he's sat there, learned,
just waiting for his time to come. And I think
Sark's gonna have him ready for the ready. The beginning
of the season. Obviously, you know he's coming from that
Hall of Fame bloodline, expectations are gonna be high. He inexperience.
Up to this point, only ninety pass attempts completed, sixty

(03:17):
eight percent of them, had nine touchdowns as well. I mean,
the guy we've we've saw how the offense runs differently
when he was in compared to Quinn Quinn Ewers, it
was a lot more dynamic. He has the talent, he's
got the supporting coaches, he's got the family to be
successful at the next level. But we're gonna see that
early a tough Week one matchup against Ohio State, so

(03:40):
we'll see kind of what he's about early on how
he handles that early pressure. He's a little bit stronger,
more athletic than Quinn, so that's how that offense is
gonna run. But, like you said, Rianter, sure if he's
gonna declare. Both other Mannings didn't declare, so we can
see that happening again. But if he has a high
men caliber year, if he leads Texas to a title,

(04:04):
I kind of would be surprised if he goes back there.
I think he would declare if he does have that
Heisman type of season, or if they go to the
championship and even win the championship.

Speaker 2 (04:15):
Yeah, Heisman number one overall pick. You know, there's often
really much to prove. The big thing I think is
just you know, going into three year three and he
only has ninety total pass attempts last season. I forget
if he had any really the year before. But it's
just a situation of you know that the seasoning and
what he's gotten at the college level. I think the

(04:36):
most kind of impressive thing about his game obviously is
a talented pass our, talented thrower of the football, but
his athleticism, his ability to run.

Speaker 1 (04:44):
We saw a lot of kind.

Speaker 2 (04:45):
Of quarterback read type of option plays, quarterback sweeps with
him in the lineup. Like you said, he's bigger and
stronger than Quinn. You weers gonna be interested to see
what we get out of sark in him And like
you said, a huge Week one test against Ohio State
that should be a very fun game, probably one of
the top five rated games of the entire college football season.

(05:06):
But arch Manning, you know, he's going to be pumped
out in our face early and often. I think I
saw Ryan Williams and Jeremiah Smith are on like the
cover of the of the NCAA football game. I Arch
probably was offered but probably didn't take it. But with
the thing that the him like, like I said, he's
he sat, he's waited his turn, and for maybe a
guy of that name, that pedigree just goes to show

(05:28):
you what type of kid he is. So looking forward
to it to seeing him get his full chance, full opportunity.

Speaker 1 (05:34):
But the player I'm looking forward to most.

Speaker 2 (05:35):
I think college football this year, We've hinted at it,
We've talked about it. Leonoras Sellers out of South Carolina
showed awesome flashes last year, a lot of a lot
of awesome moments for that South Carolina team, kind of
bringing them, you know, not to national prominence, but they
were in the discussion as maybe one of.

Speaker 1 (05:53):
The last teams for the playoff last year.

Speaker 2 (05:55):
I think the expectations going to this year is that
this is a playoff team, a team that you know
it fights its way for the top of the SEC
and they're led by the quarterback with the rex PACs.
Give me your thoughts on the Norse Sellers in his game.

Speaker 3 (06:07):
Yeah, I'm a big fan of him. I'm I already
have a ticket for him to win the Heisman. I'm
looking for it right at twenty two to one. I
took that a couple weeks ago, just based off of
I think he can. If he can put together a
full season of what he did the second half of
last season, he's gonna be in contention for the Heisman.
The SEC Freshman of the Year as a retro freshman,

(06:28):
insanely athletic, great runner, very tough to bring down. We
saw him in that Clemson game just pretty much put
the team on his back, ran for over one hundred
and sixty yards two touchdowns. There is some room to
grow as a thrower, as a passer, but you know,
I think if he can get that development, he can
grow into and all SEC type of player that NFL

(06:49):
scouts are going to look at and just want in
their system. And they're going to see his traits, see
his characteristic, see how he moves, and just want him
in their system. And I think he's going to be
He's gonna produce in this SEC. I mean, obviously it's
gonna he's gonna have to in a tough schedule in
a tough conference, but I think he'll be able to
do it with you know, the experience he had last year,

(07:10):
one year under his belt. But if, like I said,
if he can put together even you know, close to
what he did the second half of last season, I
think he'll be in contention for a heisman.

Speaker 2 (07:20):
Yeah. And I don't think it's fair to put the
label of these two guys on him, but like he
is a mix of and I don't think he's this good,
let's not get it, you know, overwhelmed here, but a
mix of kind of Cam and Lamar in terms of
his ability to run. But he's also in that six
three two forty, that big type of body. Doesn't have

(07:42):
the Lamar speed, but just watching him run, the way
he maneuvers, he can duke defenders just like Cam did
at that size.

Speaker 1 (07:47):
But also you.

Speaker 2 (07:48):
Know a little bit I think you might have a
little bit more wiggle, but also that size to run
guys over. And like you said, we'll see how he
comes along as a passer, but I think he's got
the chance to be the most electric player in all
of college football this year. And really excited to see him,
you know, take that South Carolina program to New Heights
and really elevate them it should be should be a
fun year to be watching Leonora's Sellers.

Speaker 1 (08:10):
I'm another guy will stay in the SEC.

Speaker 2 (08:12):
Obviously a heavy SEC type of episode with.

Speaker 1 (08:15):
With all the talent there.

Speaker 2 (08:16):
DJ Lagway, guy that entering his true sophomore year for Florida,
has the chance to kind of, like Lenora Sellers, bring
this Florida program to not New Heights. Obviously we've seen
what they've done before in the past, but you know
recently that they haven't been a nationally prominent program. And
he's got the chance to do that. Former five star
guy six and one record last year. You got here

(08:39):
ten yards per attempt, He's not afraid to throw the
football down the field, showed elite flashes and I think
could even be You know, he's probably the favorite as
of right now for next year for the twenty twenty
seven draft to be the number one overall pick, but
only going with that true sophomore year, has plenty of
time to learn and develop. What do you think of
him and what can he do with this Florida team

(08:59):
that once again it's gonna be playing on of the toughest schedules.

Speaker 3 (09:02):
Yeah, I was just gonna touch on it. They got
to deal with a tough schedule. But at the same time,
if he can overcome that, I think that's going to
just be you know, he can become a star in
this league that we were talking about with the Sellers.
The athletics athleticism that he has is insane. He has
one of the best arm talents in the country. He's
got to learn the game a little bit more. You know,
that'll come with experience, gain that confidence. But like you said,

(09:26):
he had a six to one record when he came
in average ten yards per attempt as a true freshman,
former five star recruit, so he has the background. He
came in around halftime against that Tennessee game and almost
brought them back to win. I ended up losing in overtime,
but had those flashes of the potential that we can see.
And then he ended up beating Garrett nus Meyer plus

(09:47):
U and Jackson Dart the next two games or the
back to back games. So I think he has the
potential to become a star in this league. And completely
agree with you. This next year, in twenty twenty seven,
we're going to be talking about him the top of
the board.

Speaker 1 (10:01):
Yeah, and he's like in a you know do or
die situation.

Speaker 4 (10:06):
I think for Florida and Billy Napier, I think really
Florida brought back Billiy Napier because of what they saw
over Lagway over the second half of the year and
kind of there was like a like a package deal,
Like I think if Napier left, Lagway probably would.

Speaker 1 (10:18):
Have left as well.

Speaker 2 (10:19):
So they get approve it year a big time year,
but like you said, we saw the flashes down the
stretch and Florida, I think over the second half of
the year last year too, was one of the more
impressive teams and the teams you kind of saw as
like okay, wait on it, like this is something that
we could build off of a guy that I've been
low on, but he made me eat my words, and

(10:40):
he had a really strong second half of the year
last year, took his Clemson team to the playoff.

Speaker 1 (10:44):
That's Kate Klubnick.

Speaker 2 (10:46):
I thought he was getting a little too much hype,
a little too overrated, but he had a really strong
second half of the year last year. With names names
escaping me right now, but it's Lincoln Riley's brother calling
the plays down there.

Speaker 1 (10:57):
The second year that those two were together and he's
really took off.

Speaker 2 (11:00):
So give me your thoughts on Kate Clubnick, what he
brings to the table, and how legit could.

Speaker 1 (11:06):
This Clempson team be if he plays to a ceiling.

Speaker 3 (11:08):
Yeah, I'm a big believer in this Clemson team and
Kay club Nick overall, like you said, he had a
very productive season last year after they got killed like
Georgia week one, and we all kind of overreacted thinking
that this Clemson team was absolutely nothing. Finished with over
thirty six hundred yards thirty six passing touchdowns only six picks.

(11:29):
Also can run the ball a little bit, four entering
sixty three yards at its seven touchdowns as well. I
think this is a top five team, and I think
a team that brings back a lot of players, a
lot of experience, I think will go far, especially in
an ac CE conference that I think is kind of
weak this year. I think they're going to be the
clear favorite to win the ACC. I already took him,

(11:51):
I think it was plus one thirty, but they're definitely
a threat to win the national title. He's got great
arm talent was third in the country and completions over
to yards or more and you're just an athletic guy.
You're smart knows when he uses legs and you touched
on it earlier. He has another year under his belt
with I think Garrett Riley, I think his name is,

(12:12):
but I think I think this is a Clemson team
that can go far the season in the ICC.

Speaker 2 (12:17):
Yeah, he enters the year at fourteen to one to
win the heis win. I think in a week acc
he's going to be able to put up some numbers.
He's going to be you know in that conversation for sure.
Do I believe in him, like long term as an
NFL type quarterback. I think he's more of a college guy.
But he made me eat my words last year. Let's see,

(12:38):
you know, if he can do it again. A guy
that has gotten way more buzz as a future NFL prospect.
And I think he's done, you know, production wise at
the college level.

Speaker 1 (12:47):
But he's back for his third year as a starter.

Speaker 2 (12:50):
As well, and maybe this is year he really takes
off Drew Aller out of the universe or out of
Penn State, takes that team to the playoff, almost takes
that team to the National championship year, has that head
scratching throw on the last drive, against Notre Dame to
end their season effectively. But he's got that NFL frame,
the six to five, you know, two hundred and forty

(13:10):
pounds can.

Speaker 1 (13:11):
Move as the rocket arm.

Speaker 2 (13:13):
But he hasn't always put it all together, and I
think the consistency is the biggest thing. But also hasn't
really had that many you know, elite passing targets over
the past few years. Tyler Warren maybe the really only
like legit NFL player that he's been throwing to. He's
got a great running game, But is this the year
that Penn State finally takes it, takes it over the top,
and is Drewal the guy to do that for them? Yeah?

Speaker 3 (13:34):
I mean I think he's a guy that last year.
If he was in this upcoming or this past draft,
I think he would have been one of the first
guys off the board. I think is the arm talent
isn't really a problem, it's just his consistency and the
head scratching plays with him. I think he played great
football last year with no receivers. I mean, you can't

(13:54):
win a playoff football game with no catches from your
receivers and expect a quarterback to ballue out just because
you got a talent like Tyler Warren. He's twenty three
and six in his career, fifty three touchdowns and ten interceptions.
He has another second season with Andy cole Necky. I
think he needs to make that next step. He needs

(14:15):
to get over the hump and be able to beat
the top dogs like the Oregon Ohio State who they
have on their schedule, the Michigans. I think if he's
able to get over that hump, he's going to be
able to succeed at the next level. He's, like you said,
he's got the frame, he's got the arm, talent, he
can run a little bit, doesn't really have to that much,
but ken if he's willing to. But I mean, I

(14:36):
think with the surrounding cast that he's had and the
production that he's had, I think he's up for or
Puois for a good season this upcoming season.

Speaker 2 (14:46):
Yeah, I'm excited to watch him and see if you
can take that next leap, because you know, he played
I think his best football kind of down the stretch
last year. He remember, like that Big ten title game
against Oregon. They didn't win, but he had a really
awesome game in that one. The discussion was like, if
he goes out, would he be the number one quarterback
picked last year? And that was on the table, And
now I think this year is gonna be a harder class,

(15:08):
but more seasoning at the college level. He's he's probably
getting pretty paid, pretty handsomely. We'll see what Jeraler can
do this year. But this is my least favorite player
in college football, my least favorite quarterback by far, the
player that I just ever since I saw his face
for the first time, I've wanted to just punch it.

Speaker 1 (15:25):
I've never liked him.

Speaker 2 (15:26):
I think he was the reason why he helped count
of Georgia back, and that's Carson Beck. He transfers to
Miami coming off of to ourn ucl as well, who
knows where that happens. It just doesn't seem like he
likes football that much based off of what he what
he says kind of a press conferences, doesn't seem like
his teammates really like him.

Speaker 1 (15:44):
It just seems like a player that has a lot
of flaws.

Speaker 2 (15:47):
Got probably got a bag for Miami, just chased that
with going down to chase some tail in South Beach,
and I just don't think he's a great quarterback. I
think he's been a very overrated player the past few years,
carried by his supporting cast.

Speaker 1 (16:01):
What do you make of him at Miami.

Speaker 2 (16:02):
Miami was my team last year, but this year I'm
full fad on those guys, you know, in of the
In terms of the big picture.

Speaker 3 (16:09):
I think we're completely on the same page, especially in
a week ACC and I wouldn't say weak, but in
an ACC conference that isn't quite what we kind of
want it to be. I don't think this Miami team's
going anywhere with Carson Bank Carson Beck. I think coming
off at torn UCL, like he already said, a lot
of things do improve on. He's got twelve interceptions in

(16:31):
thirteen games last season. They did struggle to drop or
with the drops they led the country and dropped, So
that can, you know, frustrate a quarterback, but at the
same time force a lot of pantss that then need
to be made was sacked. I think almost twenty times
we haven't really seen him throw in the off season
and make any type of connection with his new team,
his new receivers. He has no chemistry going into the season.

(16:54):
I think this injury and change of scenery is going
to be a lot bigger, you know, concern than people
are kind of thinking. Right now, you got to get chemistry,
you got it. And like you said, with the off
the field issues he's had, you know whatever we can
say with his girlfriend down there going on, whatever the
hell happened there, who knows. But I think I have
a lot more questions than you know confidence with Beck

(17:17):
and Miami heading into this upcoming season.

Speaker 2 (17:20):
Yeah, and starts out with a real battle Notre Dame.
We know Marcus Freeman let defense. That's not going to
be an easy matchup Florida. We're expecting to have a
good year. Florida State can't be any worse than last year.
I think that'll be a tougher matchup. Louisville is going
to be a tough matchup at SMU. Syracuse has shown
under fran Brown that they could be a good team.

(17:41):
I think Miami definitely regresses from what they had last year. Yeah,
they're gonna look back at and realize how good that
they had it with cam Board actually compared to Carson Beck.

Speaker 1 (17:50):
But yeah, I'm on the fade Miami Traine for this year.
But let's move back over to the SEC.

Speaker 2 (17:56):
A guy that has some more positive things. I think
to talk about it was another player kind of in
the Drew Hour conversation where if he went out, maybe
he actually would have been, you know, the number one
overall pick.

Speaker 1 (18:07):
It remained to be seen obviously that that is cam Ward.

Speaker 2 (18:10):
But LSU's quarterback Garrett nus Meyer, son of a NFL
quarterback coach.

Speaker 1 (18:16):
He was the Eagles.

Speaker 2 (18:17):
Quarterback coach excuse me last year and he left to
be an OC. I think he went with Kellen Moore
to the Saints. But this is a guy that's been around. Yeah,
this is the guy that's been around football his entire life.
Has everything you know up up between the ears. A
great thrower of the football as well. Enters the season
nine to one, win the Heisman, second best odds behind

(18:38):
Arch at seven to one. Thoughts on him, Thoughts on
LSU and kind of the shaky second half that they
had last year, and if Beck can lead this team
back to you know, the playoff and the expectation for
LSU football.

Speaker 3 (18:52):
Yeah, I think they can. I think he's one of
those guys that will produce. He's like a very confident quarterback.
He's one of those guys that he'll he'll make any
throw he doesn't see a window that he doesn't think
he can hit. He's that gunslinger type of quarterback, which
you know can be good and bad in certain situations.
He's a lived by the sword, die by sword type
of guy, a pocket passer that won't really be mobile

(19:15):
that much. But I think this LSU team is capable
of making it far. We'll have good guys to throw
two very improved receiving corps through the portal. I think
you know, he can cut down on the turnovers he
had fifteen last season, but he was top five in
passing yards through for over four thousand yards along.

Speaker 1 (19:32):
With twenty nine touchdowns.

Speaker 3 (19:34):
So I think he's someone that can lead this LSU
team and be productive as well. And like you said,
he was talked about to be a top pick in
this outcoming draft or this pass draft if you went in.
So I think he's a guy that can be at
the top of the Heisman race at the end of
the year with as he already is right now, so
I wouldn't be surprised if he's still there when the

(19:56):
season ends.

Speaker 1 (19:57):
All right, it's wrap up our conversation. We could go
on and on.

Speaker 2 (20:01):
I'm sure over the next few weeks we'll maybe even
started diving into some more teams and some more kind
of big picture conference thoughts on some of these players.
But this was one of the players that I think
maybe you could argue stole the headline this offseason in
terms of college football with the ever changing transfer portal
and nil Nico iam Aliava.

Speaker 1 (20:22):
Stole this show for sure.

Speaker 2 (20:24):
Basically holds out from Tennessee once more money they call
his bluff.

Speaker 1 (20:28):
He has to wind up transferring.

Speaker 2 (20:30):
They bring in Joey Aguilar, who transferred to UCLA from
South Alabama. He becomes a Tennessee quarterback. Nico then in
favor transfers to from two excuse me, from Tennessee to
UCLA and basically, you know, the first ever quarterback for
quarterback unofficial trade.

Speaker 1 (20:48):
You could talk about.

Speaker 2 (20:49):
But he was right up there in the discussion with
arch As like the one two and now, I think
he is a real chance to not only fall off
as a proSP as like a from going from Tennessee
the playoffs last year, potential top prospect, but like just
to a great college quarterback in its entirety, I think
going to UCLA is a disaster move for his situation.

Speaker 1 (21:10):
It was a team that played hard last year. They
got better as.

Speaker 2 (21:12):
The year went along, but I still don't think you're
going to have anywhere near as much success as you
could potentially have at Tennessee this year.

Speaker 1 (21:20):
But Nico going to UCLA.

Speaker 2 (21:21):
I think that was one of, if not the biggest
move of the entire offseason.

Speaker 1 (21:25):
Just you know, news headline wise, give.

Speaker 2 (21:27):
Me your thoughts on him, the potential that he actually
does pan out at UCLA.

Speaker 1 (21:31):
And is he a guy that you think could.

Speaker 2 (21:33):
Like Arch just use another year of seasoning or do
you think he's just you know, a one year rental
at UCLA and off to the pros.

Speaker 3 (21:40):
I think he's someone that has the talent that could
you know, produce, but I think he just he hasn't produced.
So what what can we really come up from that?
He has the arm talent, he's got the size. He's
six six, two fifteen, a little slender, skinny for you know,
the next level, so he can put on some weight.
But he's got good footwork, good mechanics. He's just very inconsistent.

(22:01):
We haven't seen the production and most of the talk
about him has been the off field headline, so we
don't want any dramatic, you know, situation coming into our
locker room if I'm a head coach. And when he
was at Tennessee before all this this fiasco was happening,
he was eighteen to one to win the Heisman, and
now he's dropped to seventy five to one to win

(22:22):
the Heisman, So we can see what Vegas thinks of
him from that. I don't really think he'll do that
much at UCLA. I think he is a talented player,
but I think there's a lot more going on that,
you know, needs to happen for him to be successful.

Speaker 1 (22:36):
And he goes to a UCLA team that they're over
under for wins. This five and a half. Tennessee was
eight and a half.

Speaker 3 (22:45):
I think eight and a half.

Speaker 2 (22:47):
Yeah, yeah, eight and a half a plus one oh five, so,
you know, a much worse situation.

Speaker 1 (22:52):
And he was on the right path, just like you know,
Archie sat waited his turn. He played in the bowl game.
