(00:24):
Find details in the show notes foreach podcast. And Now, John Maple
behind the Curtains, and we areready for our first official podcast. Mister
John Maples, my name is ProducerShelby AKA. You decided my nickname is
buttons. Well, I mean westarted that. That was that was I

(00:46):
basically you were you were kind ofgiving the low down, what's what we're
doing, and this and that andyep, you're pretty straightforward. And I
said, hey, I would lovesome cool sounds. Well, you said
you want to to hit buttons.I said, you're not hitting any buttons.
I will be happy to hit thebuttons. Like, for instance,
there we go. That's if yousay something funny. If you don't say

(01:08):
something funny, then you get aloser buzzer. Anyway, that's an example
of the button. So you're notgonna be hearing a lot of me we're
gonna be hearing all about John Maplesand what you do, sir, because
this is kind of an interesting podcast. Now, as someone who I'm just
a generic podcast producer, I havea little bit of education of the show
cattle world, but you are theexpert. So for this introductory podcast into

(01:32):
behind the Curtains, No, behindthe curtain, behind the curtain. There
you got, that's it. Whydon't you explain exactly why do you call
it behind the curtain? And tellfolks Now, I know probably a majority
of the people that are gonna belistening John are people that are already in
this world and they're not, youknow, just a regular average individual.
Correct, yes, ma'am, yeah, behind the curtain. I guess the

(01:53):
podcast thing took off in our showcattle business. I mean, I know
there's shoots, hide and and uhI heck, I'm really good at going
blank showing my age, but apile of them. Matt Lauwner has one,
there's been beyond Beyond the Ring.Yeah, how can we forget that
one? And there's a lot ofgood ones, but I guess I'll lose

(02:14):
I'll start listening to them, andI always lose interest and maybe that's a
personal decision or personal choice obviously, but I always wanted I was like,
man, I kind of thought Icould do this a little different. And
that was where the idea. Andwhen I say this idea popped in my
head, I mean, y'all knowthe first hands. We've talked about this
for a couple of years now,and I always was like, I would

(02:36):
do things just a little different hereor there, and uh, and then
that's kind of how the name behindthe Curtain formulated because all of them,
they were fun, they were entertaining, but they were also I always wanted
more. It wasn't quite enough. They weren't telling me because you know,
I've done this all my life.I'm not saying I know every trick in

(02:59):
the trade and every inside that there'spossibilities, but I've done this enough in
my life. Yeah, I knowa fair share of them. And I
guess you know that was where thatname was birthed or came from, the
idea of behind the curtains. I'mjust gonna pull the curtain back and we're
going to actually talk about what's actuallygoing behind in livestock shows or producing livestock

(03:20):
or raising them, or when ajudge is sorting these things, what's actually
going on? And just that namejust fit and I was like, that's
the most perfect podcast title I couldever think of. So what have you
done? I mean as far aslike a background, how long have you
been in the show cattle business orthe cow business, or again as just
an average person. I don't knowall the terminology. We do have a

(03:44):
random guest audience member that's in thatI'm acquainted with that we won't name names,
but I kind of know a littlebit about it, but I don't
know enough to be the expert. But what do you have as far as
like on your resume that says,Hey, I think I know what I'm
doing and it's okay for you tobrag right now. You know you told
me the first the first episode isgoing to be this way, and I

(04:05):
was like that it's going to belike to talk about the absolute hardest for
me is actually talk about myself doit. But my resume is going to
be no different than anybody that hasdedicated their life to this. I was
born in this and from a veryyoung age, and when I say a
young age four or five years old, I grew up showing cattle. And

(04:27):
then it was very quickly when Iwas nine and ten years old, I
grew up selling cattle. And thenthat turned into you know my mom and
dad, you know Glenn and Maples, Martha and Maples. They're not here
anymore with me, but you knowthey're basically how all this started. And

(04:49):
it turned in from a four hand ffa project from wanting to have the
children something to do, responsibilities, things to do like that, basically teaching
a child what's right and a familyunit and growing as a family and doing
things as a family. That's howit started. And then all of a
sudden it turned into you know, kid has a calf and they have their

(05:13):
chores to do. It turned intowe've got two hundred cows and we're selling
one hundred and fifty calves a year. Wow, And so yeah, you
know that's the evolution of my lifeand his story. And I'm forty five
years old. I'm married to abeautiful wife, Laura, who you know.
I wouldn't be down here if mywife wasn't up at the farm taking

(05:35):
care of things. While I'm going. I'm sorry, didn't mean to hit
the laugh. I meant to hitthe applaud. There we go. There's
for Laura. Yeah, well Laura, Laura definitely needs, uh pile that
applause because I'm gone way too muchand I'm in and out of the farm
checking on things. And you knowthat's uh, you know, the core

(05:56):
of the values and everything that I'vedone and have started, they've never changed.
It's I never thought I would havethe same relationship as my dad and
my mom, but that relationship meand Laura have has Basically I look in
the mirror and I said, goodlord, it's like when I was a
kid, and now, like youknow, you know, my wife is

(06:19):
out there when I'm gone, givingme reports, checking on things, and
guys that work for me also doingthe same thing. And it's almost like,
you know, it full circle.Yeah, and that's uh, that's
pretty cool. Huh. Yeah, that's awesome. What area of the country
in case people don't know who mightjust be tuning in for the first time.
Ah, Now that's that's different.And you don't talk about I'm off

(06:42):
the radar. I'm off the radar. I guess nationally, I'm in Alabama.
Excellent. You know, Maple's namehas been out there for a long
time. I'm not a huge promoter. I have promoted stuff on social media
to sell things, and it's justmeans of needs to get your stuff out
there, let people see it.And you know, I've done this for
a long time, halfway decent atit known for raising and selling some stuff

(07:06):
that people don't mind buying, andjust try to keep to myself, keep
my head down and try to figureout what's the best way to be successful
moving forward. And it's got methis far. So far, very good,
good answers so far. Let megive you some more applause. There
you go, Good job, John. Okay, all right, enough from
the studio audience. So if youwere to if you were to say,

(07:31):
do you want to talk about atthis point, I'm gonna put you on
the spot. But since I'm interviewingyou for this first podcast, do you
have any like goals do you wantto talk about that go in that direction?
Or no? I mean, Iguess you know, as far as
this pertains, you know my goals. It's just basically, why do you
want to sit here and listen tothis podcast? And I would just I

(07:54):
kind of like to step back andsay, you know, what's this going
to be. Is this gonna beworth your time? Everybody's busy and has
a thousand things that they are doingand need to be doing. I want
this to be entertaining, but Ialso I want this to be reflective.
I want you to actually think aboutthings. I would like to also use
this as a platform for people tohave a voice, because that is important.

(08:15):
And you know, heck, I'llput my contact information out there and
people can contact me and tell meif this is something you'd like to go
far and see. And i'd hearback reports from folks and talk to folks
and just let this grow and bekind of organic and it'll be what it'll
be. I like that. Sogive your phone number and we'll do it
again later, but one more timeat the beginning. Here. My number

(08:37):
is three three four seven three ninetwo three. And I know you're asking
me email on Facebook page. I'vegot a Facebook page. Okay, they
can find you. Yeah, youcan find me, John Maples, look
me up. Now, there mightbe a lot of John Maples. What
does your profile picture look like?Dno, you can look at it now.
I'm putting them on the spot.Well, it's just me a goat
and my little kids from back inthe day. Oh sweet, So,

(09:00):
I mean that's my profile picture. How old are your babies now? Oh?
Jesse is ten, Riley is nine, and Boone turns the big seven
on Monday. Oh happy birthday.Yeah, I love little kid bear.
So do they love being involved inthe cattle business. Yeah, they're still
young. My oldest Jesse, she'sten years old. She last year was

(09:22):
her first official year showing how shedo how she like it? Oh,
fishing water. I mean, ifyou talk to my wife, she'll tell
you Jesse's just her daddy made overand for for good and for bad.
So I mean, gotcha. So. And then Riley, Riley's she's testing
the waters right now, my middlechild and nine year old. She's got

(09:46):
a calf in the barn. She'stesting the waters. Riley is just a
sweet angel that likes to play. And so I mean different, different child.
And then my little one, boomBear. I mean Boone loves truck,
he loves playing in the dirt,he loves he's a boy, he's
all boy. And but he's gota goat. We show little goats every

(10:07):
now and then when we can breakaway. He's got a goat. He
kind of shows and and he's agood kid. But then also, I
mean, we'll see where it goes. I'm not wanting to ever really force
this upon my kids right now.I might lean a little hard on them,
but I'm trying not to. Youknow, at the end of the
day, when you force somebody todo something, it's just not natural and
it doesn't happen. What if theybust out and say, oh, I

(10:28):
want to go be an actor orI want to go be an accountant,
then you're not going to discourage that, are you? No? I mean,
you know, I guess you know. Heck, you know. I
want them to do what they cando. I want to be profitable.
I want to be self standing, would like to be able to support themselves
and just be a normal human likeanybody else would want for their kids.
There you go, All right, friend, what else do we want to

(10:52):
let folks know about? For thisfirst podcast episode where we're meeting John Maples
show cattle expert, I'm calling youthat. Would you call yourself that?
Oh goodness, that expert word getsthrown around, thrown around and use left
and right. Well, it's generic, it's a generic. Anybody can be
an expert. If they want tobe an expert, or they just call
themselves or they tag themselves, orthey they basically brag about themselves. You

(11:18):
can call me whatever you want tocall me. Most people just call me
John. Okay, Okay, MaryGray. You get a laugh for that.
So to kind of recap what we'regonna do, we are going to
publish probably about five podcasts. Theneverybody can kind of binge listen. But
I think for each podcast, John, at the beginning, you're gonna have

(11:39):
like a little coffee talk where youcan plug any of your sponsors if you
have any or or if you justwant to talk about nothing, or maybe
you have a trivia we'll do that, and then you're gonna get into your
topic of whatever your topic is forthat show. And then you'll have at
some point some show report from thefield or just your review of a show,
and then it's just gonna kind ofbe easy. We just gonna make

(12:00):
casual. Yeah, I kind offigured this the way the show would be
set up. I'm a huge sportsguy until I had kids and then turn
into a We watched the Disney Channel, so that aspect has changed in my
life. But I'm kind of whenthe whole thing. How I want to
set this. I want to setit up like ESPN back in the day,
you know, I wanted to comein, give some news, break

(12:22):
down the shows that have happened recently. This past fall, we've had several
shows across the country. Break thosedown, break down local shows, you
know, break down anything that wouldbe worth talking about, and then move
in from that news section or reportsection that you want to call it to
a more of an in depth report. I'm going to steal something outside the

(12:43):
lines, you know, just talkabout a specific topic that would be entertaining
and fun and enjoyable. Wrap theshow up like that and give everybody a
good little listen and roll on andlet's be happy. Okay. I like
that. So coming up the nextcouple few shows, I know you're going
to talk about current club calf bulls. I don't know if I'm saying that
right, and then like all timegreatest ones in the industry, and then

(13:05):
possibly how to breed them, andthen you're gonna compare a couple of shows
at the end. At least that'sthe list that I have in front of
me. Who knows, we mightchange in Bob and weave as we go
along. That's right. I thinkjust let it, let it flow,
see what happens. But have somethingentertaining. Very good. All right,
well, let's roll on once againBehind the Curtain podcast. You can reach
John with questions at three three fourseven o three nine two three, and

(13:31):
maybe we'll address those in the nextbatch of podcasts. But we'll get rolling,
and y'all make sure that you youknow, if you if you enjoy
it, share it, pass italong to all of your friends that are
in this realm, which I alwayssay it's kind of a niche or a
niche, but uh, there's alot of folks that'll be interested. John,
I think this will be fun.It should be. I'm looking forward
to it, all right. Thishas been Behind the Curtain, hosted by
