Behind the Curtains. And now we'rekicking off the segment we call Coffee Talk
with John Maples, and he's goingto introduce his guest, and John,
go ahead and take it away, sir, Yeah, first guest on this
(00:45):
one's just a lifetime friend. Ikind of thought this, I'd have to
have somebody I could communicate with backand forth, someone that's easy to talk
with. My good friend Wyat Shepherdover in Sylvania, Georgia. Why why
good to have you on here? Can you hear me? Why? Hey,
So you've had kind of an interestingmorning. I was letting you know,
(01:08):
Hey, we're going to be onthis podcast doing this thing. And
first thing you said, well,Hey, I'm on a I'm on a
gator right now, running a cowup, fixing it. I gotta I
gotta pull a calf out, tellme what happened? Oh sometimes, first,
what did you did you get adid you get a live calf out?
Over? Everything? Go all rightwith that dustotia caack. Most of
(01:30):
our audience will know what that meansusing the calf jacket one out us one
though once or twice in my lifea couple of times raising some clubbies.
I guess that's that's what we're leadinginto the main discussion. Why is uh,
we're gonna here break down the havethe definitive list of the current club
calf bulls that are out today beingused. And uh, I'll tell you
(01:56):
a little history about my buddy. Why the reason he's on here is we'd
have sales and we'd have auctions backin the day. And I remember this
little kid coming over with mom anddad, and he was a young one,
and I have the first time Ihad ever seen a ten, twelve,
thirteen, fourteen year old kid absolutelymemorize Lautner Farms Phil Lautner's sire directory.
(02:23):
And I was absolutely blown away.Like I would say something, what's
that bottom side of heat wave orthis or that? And here comes a
little thirteen year old kid say,oh, it's a task cow and I
was like, you got to beI was like, who is this kid?
And from there he ends up buyingcalves. I end up clipping calves,
grooming caves, working with them andstarting a lifetime friendship. And it's,
(02:46):
uh, you just don't see thatI have a thirteen year old kid.
And then when I was shooting theidea around this do the podcast,
I was like, yeah, I'vegot to have white. I said,
if we're going to break down andhave the defenditive list of the current Club
CAF Bulls in the next episode, the all time list of Club KEF Bulls,
that's the guy to talk to.So why you want to jump into
(03:09):
this list? I probably go hereI am, that's a that's a Wade
Rogers. So what are some justnames out there? You're your name and
here I am that. I thinkhe's a he's a walks along Sun.
He was out there in Denver.Heck, I remember seeing that bull and
several of his his uh, hissons. Isn't he all walks? Yeah?
(03:35):
Eight O five kel everybody had bulledoff of. Yeah, he'd be
a list in there. You mentioneduh, I guess you know there's uh
there's you know, front and center, there's one oak, there's made to
order. We've got red Rocky winningdoubt. What's I guess when I would
(03:58):
talk about this, I would say, if we're gonna have a list,
you actually have to have something toback it up and prove it. You
just first one out of the gateyou named was was here I am.
And if that's not a that's nota half bad place to start, especially
when you start thinking about what thatbull has accomplished. When when you talk
(04:18):
about what that bull is accomplished, and you talk about state fairs, as
has there been a state fair thatbull hasn't won? I don't know.
I don't really keep up state fairas much, but I know you've seen
one and every day might you're outthere. That's that's the dang truth.
He wins about everything. And justuh, I've had this conversation with Pile
(04:40):
folks, and everybody seems like we'vebeen using we've been using here I am
now for a good good minute now. And uh, I've always speculated,
and I've told folks over and overI said, he's just the perfect one
with the perfect sire to get oneready that'll get there for an August endpoint.
If you're if you're in Indiana,you're in the Midwest, you're you're
(05:02):
shooting to win the Iowa State Fair. It's actually a challenge to get one
to hit fourteen hundred, and toget one that will be big enough.
And bottom line, we start usingsome of his sons, we start using
some of his brothers. That boyjust had to touch more growth. You
know, we're both. You're aGeorgia boy, I'm an Alabama boy.
(05:24):
A lot of times we can kindof talk dirty about them things. Some
of them a little shallow bellied, some of them don't have enough gas.
Some of the Southern guys don't reallylove that thing because you know, we
kind of like them chunky and powerful, and some of those are kind of
built for some speed, built forsome gas and kind of grow and go.
And if you bred much to hereI am see you see they gotta
(05:47):
be real clubby, in my opinion, real clubby. You'd probably like the
more boxier ones. That's just it'sgoing to be appearing for the Southern market,
just something a little more jammed upin box here. But then at
the same time, I mean, heck, one of the most perfect pedigrees
out there would be here I amback on Monopoly cow and some of them
(06:11):
you come out a little box hereand smaller. Some of those things come
out with some gas and a guycan get him there for an August end
point. So yeah, that's that'sa good one. Do you prefer the
winning doubt or thefer like you?You know, I think you mentioned in
God We Trust? I mean,I know our Southern boys kind of liked
that bull pretty well, and uh, what's your thoughts on those? I'd
(06:34):
go and go to with trust tooand winning out three wise in God We
Trust, I guess been there anddone that. Oh well, kind of
like here I am. He's gettinga piece of everything now not as many
state fairs. It seems like he'sjust getting there shitty wins everything in Texas.
It looks like, yeah, Imean he's originally I guess that's one
(06:58):
from Brandon Horne kind of produced thatWade Rogers and Brendan Horn kind of partnered
up on. And good lord thatthat combination has been successful to say the
least. And and yeah, andGod we Trust is awfully really is awfully
good when both of those bulls here, I am in God we Trust are
awfully good when you seems like youthrow it back on a on a monopoly
(07:21):
cow, you know, black oneswith here I Am and all heck colored
cows within God we Trust, seemslike that's not a half bad mating.
Yeah, and you've had a reallygood success with them. They haven't been
bad to me, they haven't beenbad to me. I'm kind of one
of these guys. I like tohear a track record, like to hear
(07:42):
something like if it ain't broke, you know, why am I trying to
fix it? And then that's goodand bad? I mean, and I
mean with IVF nowadays, how muchare we how much are we involving?
And stuff like that, But youcan't argue if you're gonna if you're gonna
have a definitive list of the currentbulls, those things are are pretty dang
good. And then you know, consistency and consistency is a it is a
(08:09):
thing like if you're going to dumpten straws and cows, or if you're
going to invest the money to IVYFcows, consistency is the big pusher on
that. And consistency is the thingif you're going to invest that kind of
money and you're going to try toraise one hundred head, you know,
you want to use the most consistentstuff, and that track record for those
two guys is impressive. I wouldn'tsay that, you know, here I
(08:31):
am probably not as consistent as inGod We Trust? Would you kind of
agree that, you know, youcould use in God on some of those
things and you kind of know whatthey're going to come out a little more
time in time out? Nahah AndI wouldn't use here I am on one
of these lang kales we get runningaround here. Yeah, using God would
(08:52):
trust only gets something good. Yeah, you know, just the way you
use those bulls and the way youmake those bulls and that whole IVF game
is pretty much it's you know,be honest, it's revolutionized or industry.
But you know, if you're gonnaif you're gonna blanket breed some of those
things, add in God we Trustain't a half bad one to blanket breed
(09:13):
some cows, is he? No? No, yeah he's not, especially
if you've got some clubby cows, and especially if you've been doing some testing
and their thch clean and they happento have you know, the right color
pattern where you can stay away fromsmokes and grays and stuff like that,
well the grays and particularly you canstay away from the grays. Adding God,
(09:35):
we trust there a dime a dozen, I guess the guy. If
you've done this for a long timeand you're thinking about this for a long
time, a guy could be couldbe considered. You know, structure comes
into play. I know, whenyou're making a list and you're talking about
this feet and legs, you ain'tnothing's gonna get you beat or quick in
the ring. If you're walking acalf in the ring that's got leg problems,
(09:58):
you know you can't get away fromthat. And for better or for
worse. I've always been one tosay in God we trust, cattle are
the most perfect cattle for kids comingout of lives dot judging and they're starting
to judge shows because they do theone thing that you have to do right.
They're squishy in their pastorns. Imean, they might not be perfect
(10:18):
in their hot design, they mightnot be perfect in they're giddy up and
go at times, and a lotof cattle are that book and danger do
it right. However, they dothe one thing that every guy that ever
went on a livestock judging thing. They don't pop their pastorns, and you
might have your random one that does, and then here I Am is the
(10:39):
same thing. Fink legs or justare very close to bulletproof. And that's
one been the tricky problem with alot of guys I talked to is the
power in the amount of product anddimension you get out of being God.
We trust being able to contain thatand produce that without having leg problems.
(11:01):
That's the That's the one thing I'veseen within God there is a difference because
that bull will rev them up somuch. Well, we've had just a
little healthy discussion on one and two, and I'm gonna be honest, I
kind of agree with you. Iknow me and you have talked about switching
one in two and starting within God. But I think historically when you look
(11:22):
at it, what what here IAm has done through the Midwest and down
south, you find good ones there. I think he's securely at the number
one spot right now. And Ithink, uh, in God we trust
is uh he's locked down? Twois good? What who do you you
know? We were spitting out ideason down after that, and you know,
(11:43):
I there's there's piles of different bulletswhen you get those two are just
so out in front. Who doyou like for a number three on this
list? Yeah? Like, likeyou said, the parting in front tier
are a little bit out of headmore than everybody else. But I probably
start winning down in there. He'slike the only bullet that was my mind.
I had a little piece of amajor and shoot, I think he's
(12:05):
had a piece down here, andI'm sure he's had some stuff down there
in Texas. But most kale thatI've liked that a bolt and bread.
I kind of like winning down.I think you need to bring him something
that's got a little better neck tohim. But as far as feet and
legs and belly, I think he'sthe best belly here am. So they
(12:26):
got running out there right now?Yeah? What was that bottom side on
winning out? It need like somethree quarter by hitting his mother, like
some three quarter hang his kale.Yeah, yeah it is. I guess
that's just you know, putting here, I am back on there and just
having having You know, what wasso neat about that was it was almost
(12:46):
the throwback to the bull of Monopoly. You know, Monopoly was a heat
wave but then he was out ofhe might have been out tote. Yeah,
you know, purebred angus. Sowhen you got winning down and then
right out of the gate here Iam before before everybody started putting him back
on monopoly cows. When you hadwinning doubt come out, and then he
(13:09):
was on a three quarter Angus,a structure Northern improvement full flush. So
you got double shots with winning doubton that bottom side with Angus and then
a little full flush on the bottomof that. That just uh boy.
That that was when we were talkingabout in God, we trust in the
consistency you get out the winning doubt. Why you might not have the home
(13:30):
runs and winning doubt might not havea high of a ceiling as here I
am, and as in God wetrust the consistency of those things. I
mean, I was talking to youand I was like, yeah, a
current for our current list, he'sgot to be three. I was kind
of in agreement with you on that, and uh yeah, where do we
(13:50):
go from there on winning? Imean, we're at the four spot and
shoot the first three, first threebulls. We were all agree, it's
with h where do we go onthe fourth spot? Oh? In my
opinion, it's just my opinion. Can I do one oak? Seems like
(14:11):
them one oaks are just a littleeasier to sell. They come out fluffy,
colored up and see most of themare pretty dang sound. I like
one oaks for downsail. Some ofthem can kind of be a little shorter
and you can hold them over alittle bit longer. Yeah, well,
I mean one oak. I'm notgonna argue there. I think it gets
(14:31):
I think I start throwing some othernames in that discussion. I can live
with one oak there. I'm actuallya huge I love those one oaks.
It's always seems like there's a littleissue with their gate or they're a little
tricked out here, a little trickedout there. I think, uh,
Luchin's raised that thing. They havethe mother of that thing, and uh
(14:56):
that thing's, uh, that thing'sthere's been a pile of good ones out
of that bull. I think youprobably hit it out of the park when
you just said they're easy to sell. They're fluffy, they're cool, they're
good looking. If you could tweakthem here and there, a lot of
times they're perfect. But then goingback to historically, they have gotten pieces
of major shows and they have wona pile of prospect shows. And then
(15:18):
if you're a guy that just wantsto hang your hat on something, I'm
not going to sit there and arguewith one Oak because that bull, well,
maybe I think I might prefer afew other bulls out there. I
think that one oak bull's pretty niceplace to put your hat in. For
the four spot, who do yougot wrapping this thing up? Going into
that top five? That fifth spot? Who did you like? What?
(15:39):
I think five gets kind of tougher. I'd probably go Red Rocky. I
want to tell you, I didn'teven prep this, and this was the
list that we had probably a yearor two years ago. And while you
go in Red Rocky at that spot, why not throwing some no guts,
no glorious? Was King Kobra huntand center some icon and something like this?
(16:03):
While Red Rocky he's only one outof that whole group that's gotten a
piece of a major steer show.I get, I got a funny story
about a King Cobra calf. Allright, tell me your story. I
gotta, I gotta, I gottatell it you. I think I think
you know the story. Okay, the people that have bought calves from me
and whatnot in the past when Iused to keep the cows by my parents'
(16:26):
house, I bought a calf fromChad Thompson a few years ago, a
brilliance Kal Brilliant, Brilliantiety and hersecond calf. I brought her to King
Cobra. She ended up having abull calf owen the caves at my parents'
house. Calves never stepped on thetrailer before. I knew that Caf had
(16:47):
a little attitude to him. He'sa little hot. I gave him haulker
bro good enough and he'd leave forme. But a truck her that trucked
him out there. I don't knowa lot of people didn't want to just
back up trailers and parking lot,but they took him to Texas, and
that Caf had never been on atrailer ride. He was a little visually
impaired, which the customers knew that, and they knew he was a little
(17:11):
hot. But he leave from meand I a bunch of videos and me
leading me a bunch of videos, and ME pitting all on him. So
they know they're getting into But now, why they didn't want to just back
up trailers and just running across theone, but they met a Walmart parking
lot and they tried to leave himoff and the caf ended up breaking a
(17:36):
driver's foot, got away from him, lived behind Walmart for about two weeks.
Yeah, crazy, I guess youknow you were sending some out west.
You were sending some out west. And I actually saw the trucker I
guess three or four days after thathappened, and uh, yeah, he
was walking around with a broke foota boot on it, and he told
(17:56):
me the story. And I thinkthat was your place too. I think
he stopped by your place. Idid, he stopped by my place.
That calf was. Yeah, ifyou're hauling cattle or anything, back the
things up secure him, tyle gates, tie panels. But yeah, I
would even learn and maybe a maybea newbie truck or a newby family and
didn't really know better. But backon Red Rocky tying up the five spot,
(18:21):
I got no argument on that.I actually love those things. I
was in Denver the year that Iguess Red Rocky was he'd be the only
clone that's in that list. Youknow, I think the rest of them
were we're embryo caves, natural matings. But I think Red Rocky is a
clone to a steer that won Denver. At one of Scott Shockey's boys showed
(18:41):
that bottom crew had out there. My buddy Mason Mills was in Florida.
Out of Florida, they actually Iwent with them to Denver that year.
They drug a steer out there thatstood second in class and there was a
little red one they were working onand all. He was impressive, and
I guess that one was fortunate enoughto win Venver, as everybody knows the
story. But you know, Ithink the Red Rockies won Louisville. There
(19:06):
was a great one one Louisville. There's not many of those things, you
know. To find those. Tofind those out left and right is uh
is a little tougher. But they'vehad high sellers. You've had Red Rockies
that Mike Mimes go for sixty andforty six forty five Atterstats sold them for
forty. There's been a pile ofthose things that have had success. It's
(19:29):
just, uh, you know, you don't find as many. But boy,
those cattle are good, and Ishould be honest. I snagged up
a Red Rocky out of South Dakota. I'd parked that thing about just by
by anybody's and say, come on, I don't mind them at all.
Didn't he get grand reserve before itworth a couple of years there, that'd
(19:52):
be I'd have to look at that. I don't I don't remember that one.
But it was red. Oh you'retalk talking about that. You're talking
about that, that red steer.Yeah, all the one that was controversial.
I think he was coming out asa maybe a one oak or shoot,
my mind slipped me. But uh, but then also it did come
(20:15):
out that there's red. Yeah, there's a lot of and in this business,
you you'll hear what the CAF issired by. And but unless you're
gonna pull DNA and actually know, you know, this is all just the
honor system. And you know, heck, there's you know, there's people
to get grumpy with other folks anddo business and sires get changed, pedigrees
(20:37):
get changed, and it's just usedto promote one's business over another's business,
or somebody's upset with something. Butyeah, I guess, yeah, there
was a reserve spot that CAF endedup being a red rocky. And you
know, if you're you know thatthat's something halfway to be proud of I
forgot the one, that silver onelong one Louisville. Yeah, I think
that was I think heard had thatone or so something, and yeah,
(21:00):
everybody said that was an impressive one. You can't. You can't beat a
nice silver or smoke one that thatclips out. I mean then things can
clip out like glass and all thosered rockies. Actually, that's one of
my bulls that I probably probably liketo use a little more. You know,
pretty good list, So I guessrecapping this is we're we're starting the
(21:22):
list off with here. I amjust a guy that gets it done and
has got it done for an incrediblylong time. How long have we been
using that bull? See? Ithink I was still in school. Yeah,
did you ever show one? Idon't, I don't even I don't
even I know what heck you showed. You showed heat waves, So you're
backdated that far. But I'm talkingabout a bull that's been around and it's
(21:48):
still still very relevant to the day. And then in God, we trust
in the two spot. And likeyou said, I mean, how much
room is there between two and therest of these? In my opinion,
there's a good bit. I wouldn'targue that if you if you actually those
bottom three, if a guy wantedto switch those around, move one Oak
down, move one Oak up,move Red Rocky to three, when winning
(22:10):
doubt to four or something, youcould you could swap those around. I
think there's some argument there. Ithink one and two are out by a
large, large percentage. And thenuh then we go from there and uh
ah. These things are fun toit's fun to talk about. Why it's
been thanks for fun having you talkabout this. I mean, it's something
that gets in your blood and youget talking about it and it doesn't matter.
(22:34):
I mean you never forget these things. Yeah, yeah, See,
they're fun to look at to talkabout. I mean, you talk on
the phone a good bit over duringthe week, and I'm not involved in
it as much anymore, but man, I still love to talk about them.
I can't wait, you know, get on and we'll start talking about
ones that that you raised and howto make them and what you look for,
(22:57):
what's running through your head when youdo this, And good lord,
it is something that gets in yourblood and gets a hold of you.
And if you can figure out away to make a living at this,
you're you're you're ahead of the game. For sure. This has been Behind
