They're also the New Jersey Division NonPublic Group B state champions. Of
course, they will be taking onyour PI Double four A state champion Bish
mcdevit Crusaders here tonight at Joe LennonField. Art selby Rob pgleee there in

I'm sure throughout the ball game tonight. Is a beautiful turf field here at
Joe Lennon Field and currently we're watchingthe Spartan's warm up and definitely a very

solid football team as we can seein front of us, so Rob.
Last week, Bish McDevitt opened theregular season with a twenty to fourteen win
over Mount Saint Joseph. Has itcome from behind win from McDevitt. They
score in the first half, goup six nothing on a three yard touchdown
past and Evin Hopkins from Stone Saunders. McDevitt almost throws a pick six right

before half tom Unfortunately the guy whocaught it went down around the forty.
McDevitt looked like they were going togo up by two scores and a pass
to Chase Reagan for a touchdown wascalled back from holding and then the Mountaine
Joseph kind of stun mcdeviott with twotouchdowns, one on a long pass and
one off of a turnover. McDevittput it together in the fourth quarter.

They had two scores, two touchdownpasses from Stone Saunders to Rico Scott,
one from nine yards out and onefrom forty two yards out, plus the
two point conversion, and McDevitt defensedid what it does, allowing only one
rushing yard on the ground on twentyone rushes and Rob McDevitt not the prettiest

McDevitt whinever, but a solid win, definitely solid win Art and you know
you do that against a team likeMount Saint Joseph, very reputable program from
Baltimore, from Maryland, heavyweight programin the Northeast. And what was impressive
to me last week is despite someof the I guess bumps in the road
and some hiccups, you know,McDevitt came through when they needed to in

the fourth cour and after last seasonwith a lot of times things coming so
easy to them, what was superimpressive last week on the three touchdowns for
mcdebitt art they had a fifteen playeighty yard drive, they had a eight
play eighty four yard drive, andthey had a nine play fifty seven yard
drive so they had to put threelong drives together, and not only did

they have to do that, butin order to sustain those drives. On
the first touchdown drive, they converteda third and eight and a fourth and
nine with Stone Sauners hitting the freshmanJohn day Quick to keep that drive alive.
On the second touchdown drive, theyhad to overcome a fourth and twenty

eight after Stone was about sacked.It was an intentional grounding, backed it
up to the thirty nine and hehits Rico, leaks, Rico out hits
him underneath, and Rico picks upthirty to keep that drive alive. And
then on the go ahead the gamewinning drive, they convert a third and
ten with Stone hitting Chase Reagan anda third and seven with Stone again to
the freshman John take Quick. Soa lot of I guess, you know,

times of urgency, times where it'slike you have to make a play.
McDevitt did it every time. Stonelast week twenty two to thirty nine,
two hundred and fifty five yards,passing one interception but three touchdowns.
McDevitt on the ground last week twentyfour, rushes seventy three yards. Maurice
Barnes thirteen rushes thirty four yards andLeon Parson four rushes twenty five yards.

the season. A lot of festivitiesherebody seemed to have a good time and
I was wondering was Coach Wector havinga good time that second quarter being in
the game that was very competitive,you know, first off, it was
a great crowd and I will thankthe mcdeva faithful for coming out. Uh,
you know, it was emotional,it was. It was a high
and low emotional pregame, you know, with you know, the uh moment

of silence for Big John Very Grennack, who we missed so much, and
then to come right back and afterthe national anthelm and had the state championship
manner unveiled. I saw it before, but the players haven't. And so
I mean it was you know,normally your hype for the first game anyways,

and then you know we're down,and then we came back up with
that. You know. Now,Saint Jose was a very good team,
you know, so I was happyto come my way with a win.
I mean, I wasn't always happyduring the game, but I was happy
to come away with a win.They were very good football team, you
know. They they you know,we we didn't see much of them.

(07:48):
They have a new coaching staff,so you know, any film of them
last year did us no good becauseit wasn't their schemes. And you know,
we played a half of game situationagainst cd S and a scrimmage and
they played a try scrimmage and playedtheir starters ten plays on offense and ten
plays on defense. And we're very, very vanilla, so we had no

(08:09):
idea, and they came out ondefense and sort of the kitchen sink at
us, I mean, and thenthose two defense events were both Division one
kids. They were tough, theyhad a very very good secondary, they
were big upfront. But you know, I came out of there that you
know, we made a ton ofmistakes. I mean, we should add
we should add twenty eight thirty fivepoints. We dropped six footballs. One

should have been a touchdown and endedup being an interception. But we you
know what I'm proud of. Wepersevered, We found a way and you
know, I talked to their coach. We texted a little bit on Saturday
about some things and he said,listen, your kids would have the heart
of a champion. And that istrue. I mean, when weren't gonna
give up, there was no therewas no when we went down, There

(08:52):
was no panic over there. Therewas no you know, negative talk.
It was all and we're gonna finda way to win this game. You
know, when you got a quarterbacklike Stone Saunders, you got a receiver
like Rico Scott, they're gonna finda way to win. And that's what
I was happy about. And you'rereally people might not and our offensive line,
trust me, he's got a longway to go. But what was

(09:13):
thrown at them that they had noidea was coming their way. And we
you know, we would practice againsta three stack a little bit in the
summer, but without pads, theyand going against too the vision one defensive
ends. I thought they played reallywell for a first game. They again,
they made mistakes, so you know, we came out of it courts
of defense. You know, theyplayed lights out. You know we made
one mistake when you know, twoof our starting secondary guys cramped up on

the same play. But you knowyou're gonna have that one. It's it
hot. So you know, Icame out, you know, thinking,
you know, hey, I thinkwe're gonna be a pretty good football team.
You know, we might, itmight take us a couple of weeks,
but at some point by mid season, we're gonna be a really,
really good football team if we stayhealthy. You mentioned about Rick and Stone
and playing big. We just remarkedup in the booth shortly before that about

one of the seniors or you're veterans, junior quarterback, it's gonna have to
make a big play. And twoof them combined made your big play.
I think I call it a flankor screen from the old Notre Dame Dave's
ed, But that worked out perfect, and once Rico shook one guy,
it was like nobody's gonna catching.It was a play action tunnel screen that
we've been working on all spring.It's it's it's got some very complexity to

it. You know, we're fakinga counter tray, and you know we'd
run some we run some tunnel screens, but The blocking is different on this
because you're pulling your front what wouldbe the front side garden tackle, making
it look like an all six ofother guys on the box bid it.

(10:46):
You know. It was one ofthose plays where you gotta call it at
the right time. You know.It was a second or two with about
five minutes left in the game,so running around midfield, so they're thinking,
yeah, they possibly could run.Now if it's if it's third and
eight and you're trying to run itoff of play action, it's probably not
gonna work because they're gonna bail.You know, we require our center to

(11:07):
come back the whole way and comeflat. We have a backside tackle that
wraps around them as a rat killer. So they executed it to perfection.
I mean Rico did, Stone did, but really the offensive line executed the
perfection. So you know, itwas good. It was a great play.
The kids really executed well, andyou know won us a football game

(11:30):
defensive touchdown for them on the fumbleon the return, did that ball go
to the ground I was blocked outon that or did he take it out
of his arm? He took itout of his arm. I mean it
was we can't let that happen.You know, as we say all the
time, the ball as a program, we can't give it to somebody else,
you know. And I don't makeexcuses, but I will say for
Mariee. You know, it wasso humid and everybody was so sweaty,

and the balls were really wet,like it was almost raining. To the
fact that, you know, weput the balls away Friday night and then
get them out until Monday afternoon,and when we were practiced, they were
still all wet and slick, soand you know, you didn't rain,
and we didn't want him down.That was all from sweat. And you
know, Maurice, now I toldhim, don't hang your head. He's

gonna be a great running back forus, and he's gonna make a lot
of plays for us, so don'teven worry about it. And you know,
again, the defense held us inthe game until we could make some
plays offensively. Yeah. I thoughtthe defense came out of that so quick
that I didn't think it went tothe ground. And we'll have more of

said, made a lot of thestates. You work on that this week.
I always say about the improvement betweenweek one week two. What were
some of the things you emphasized thisweek? Catching the football? I mean
we had six drops, some ofour line splits, some of our wide
receiver splits on some different routes,Coach Land saying, I know, worked

(14:18):
on a little bit more containment byour defensive ends and pass pro. They
run a nice play. You know, if you if you're an Eagle fan,
you know aret watching because you knowthey killed the Cowboys on it.
It's a zone read. You knowthe Eagles do it with gentlemen hurts where
it's a zone read, but they'rebringing they're bringing their fullback across like he's

(14:43):
gonna block, but he bloss andruns what we call a cat screen.
And they really they scrimmaged. Theydidn't play a game this week and the
Paul Catholic, but Malvin Prepp isa very good team and they killed them
on that probably or six times.So you know, it's kind of people

(15:03):
don't realize, but it really is, is Veer. It really is a
beer with a fourward pass, Andanytime you face a beer offense, you've
got to really work on assignment football. So those are things that we worked
on on both offense. And thenobviously, uh, you know, we
work quite a bit on our puntreturners catching the ball and not letting it

(15:24):
roll thirty yards. So you know, ask you about that. Would you
ever think about staggering them? Sono, I mean they they you know,
they got to come up when they'reshort. They gotta come up,
run up, full speed, faircatch and catch the ball. The one
bounced between them two because one ofthem is I won't say one of them

(15:46):
is essentially the captain of that andhe makes a call me me me or
you you you and it was completesilence and it just drops the front of
him. And you know, trustme, we worked on that quite a
bit this week and the last oneI was across this the football game,
they got thirty yards on Avenue,all right, Okay, just a couple

of names, and I know youdon't like me to do this, but
a couple of names of a coupleof young kids that you really came away
from Friday night. Even though hemade a mistake that if you were a
pool, it would have been atouchdown. It would have been about an
eighty five yard touchdown pass. JakaiLogan played a great game at offensive guard.
He you know, on that onethird and one on a quarterback sneak

going towards the scoreboard he took thatdefensive tackle was a big kid. He
drove him five yards off the ball, but he played very well. Uh
you know, the defense, thewhole defense played well. Uh you know,
kept Hart is always making plays.Luca's lawler, you know, Nick
Slogic had two sacks. But theyall played well. And I really I

(16:53):
felt the offensive line. We madesome mistakes, but I thought for what
they were going against, I thoughtthe offensive line played real well. And
of course Rico, I mean Ricois you know he people don't and they'll
see, but Rico has really improvedin his route running and you'll get a
chance to see that as a yeargoes along. So you know, again

(17:14):
when you win, everybody play well. All right, long bus trip tonight
to Paul Cathlete. Just briefly,what do we see from them? And
what did you get the keys fordoubt to come back across the state line
with w We can't turn over theball? You know we we were.
We turned the ball over twice lastweek and got no turnovers. Turnovers gonna

(17:36):
be a key, you know.We We've got to run the football some
on them. They have a goodsecondary, they're very good defense. But
you know, as good as ourdefensive is, we need to play a
little bit of ball control because thisoffense is good. I mean, they
got big offense line. They gota big sixt eight three hundred pounds,

some left tackle. The the oneguard he played right guard last year.
They seemed to move him around thisyear. This kid, he's a junior.
He'll be a Division one offensive lineman. You know. Quarterback was a
freshman, led him to a statetitle last year. They're running back as
a transfer with ten FBS offers.And he's good, he's fast, he's
quick. And then two receivers.I mean they got their version of Rico

(18:22):
Stone. He's number eight. He'snot as thick as Rico, but he
is very quick and very fast.He's got Texas and Alabama offers, and
then the other receiver has some FBSoffers. I didn't think he quite was
as good as to live up tohis last name, but last year looking
at film, but this year andhe had a really good scrimmage, had
two touchdown passes. His Plexico Burrows, a sign who played for the New

York Giants. They're big upfront.You know, we we've we've got to
limit a little bit of him havingthe football. We got a plast signment
football. On defense, I feelyou know, our defensive staff has had
a real good game plan for this. I feel good about our game plan.
But they got some kids can makesome plays. I mean you can,

you know, as Dick Shiner alwayssays, you can put them in
position, but you can't make theplace for him. And you know that's
sometimes what I kind of felt alittle bit Friday night is we had some
guys we had in position and wedidn't make the plays on offense. We
gotta make the plays this week.You know we are gonna be helped.
I mean, Maurice Barnes is ourlead back and he'll have a good game.

(19:30):
You know, we got we gotSwoops coming in and zero Davis Jones
coming in. U can play thisweek at running back and he'll mix in
a little bit, so it givesus a little bit more different dimension at
running back. But I mean itis gonna be a good game. We
got to play very good special teamsbecause they're very well coached, very well
coached, and that North Jersey CatholicLeague is maybe the best in one of

the top two or three in thecountry. And I've said this staff and
I'm saying it. It may ormay not come to a truition, but
just what I see on film,and I don't know what's out in Western
PA other than I Equippa, butI've said we could make the state finals

this year again, and I'm notsure this isn't gonna be the best team
we're gonna play all year. Andwe got a good little South team coming
in next week. Last week MountSaint Joseph was a very very good football
team, very good, but thismight be the best team would play all
year. So while are handsful tonight, maybe one of those games that thy
kep part makes one of his picksixes and proves to be the difference.

The name Elijah Burris, the sonof Plexico Buris, was a wide receiver
Dez Jones a thousand yard man lastyear and No James sixteen hundred all purpose
yards. He was at Don BoscoPrep last year and transferred over here.

This is a team they lost fortheir first five last year, but won
six out of their last seven towin the state championship, and they won
that game nineteen seventeen. And theyare a very big, fast and good
football team. And as coach Wectormentioned, Rob, this is probably mcdevit's
toughest game of the year. Yeah, you heard coach Wector in the pre
