Speaker 1 (00:00):
Marty Bowman alongside Art Selby and Bisho mcdebit.
Speaker 2 (00:04):
Hit football coach Jeff Lecter coach.
Speaker 1 (00:07):
Talked a couple of weeks ago, you knew the first
two games were really going to be tough, especially after
you got to see a little bit of the team
from Canadona on film, and of course we knew we
know about Harrisburg.
Speaker 2 (00:19):
So come off owing two.
Speaker 1 (00:22):
But I saw a lot of improvement between weeks and
weeks two. I'd like you to talk a little bit
about that. And then also along with those lines, after
the game, what did you tell the kids?
Speaker 3 (00:35):
You're right, I mean it was tough, and you know,
we've we've done. There's times where I said we could
be going three after the first three games, like twenty
twenty three, going back to the first year we were
here playing Central Golf in cumber Levalley and Harrisburg all
three in a row. I said we could be going three.
Luckily we were you know, three and oh on both
(00:56):
of those and I kind of felt that going in
we could be ohing two, be one on one where
we could do leo and we were going to You're right,
you know, we went back to basics last week in
practice started, you know, maybe simplifying things a little bit more.
Worry about our line, you know, we worked on you know,
(01:17):
and Marty, you've been to some of our practices.
Speaker 4 (01:19):
You know this.
Speaker 3 (01:20):
You know you might fall down here. But in a
third thirty five minute offensive team period, we threw four passes.
I wanted the kids to really get a feel, you know,
out of their different fronts and stunts you know, each time,
you know, stay with their rules, but really wanted them
to what we call come off the ball, you know,
(01:40):
where we're being physical right from the start, and we're
creating a new offensive line of scrimmage. And we did
that on Saturday, and you know, so I was pleased.
You know, we don't like losing, you know. And what
I told the team after the game is, you know,
we're the standard. We don't like losing, and there are
(02:01):
no moral victories at bish mcdebba. We long past that.
But I was very proud of them. Number one, how
they played. We did get a lot better. I thought Sebastian,
not only the offensive line that you know, both lines,
the tackling on defense was a lot better. But I
(02:23):
thought Sebastian played a lot better than he did against
Clarkson North. You know, he really only have one. He
just on a deep ball we had it and just
didn't get out quite enough and the way through it.
But that Sebastian played great, So you know, I told
him I was proud of him. And you know the
other thing I told him, I was very proud of
how they hand them themselves in the game before the
(02:44):
game and after the game, because you know, it was
a zoo before the game, and you know it was
a very very chippy, chippy, chippy game. So the way
we handled it, I was very proud of them.
Speaker 1 (03:02):
A couple of plays, and it does in games like this,
it comes down to making plays, turnovers, penalties, which there
was quite a few.
Speaker 2 (03:11):
Call to mcdebit two plays in particular.
Speaker 1 (03:15):
One they were both past plays got first downs and
the receivers trying to make extra yardage, one who fumbled
recovered but lost the first down.
Speaker 2 (03:25):
And then Gaye Ruth's fumble. How hard it is is
it to tell a kid.
Speaker 1 (03:33):
That awareness where they're at, you got a first down
or whatever.
Speaker 2 (03:38):
You don't ever want to discourage a kid from trying
to make a play to.
Speaker 3 (03:40):
Get No, they were both given great effort trying to
help their team win. You know, the first one on
is Ish Palmer. He did at the first down, he
kind of got hit right as he turned to a
field and unfortunately the ball bounce. I mean, we talk
about ball security all the time upon it. I will
(04:01):
tell you on Monday, the receivers worked very hard on
ball security. The one on Engage, you know, I get
what he was thinking. You know, he hit the ball
in his left hand when he came down towards the field.
He tried to switch, but you can't switch, not like that,
you know, when people are around you. He switched, and
(04:23):
you know they they made a play. You know, they
knocked the ball out. And honestly, until that point, I
thought we were gonna win the football game because.
Speaker 4 (04:33):
They had to.
Speaker 3 (04:34):
They had to get into an eight man front and
play his man demand. And I didn't think they could
cover his man demand. And we showed it. I mean
we I mean, if we don't fumble, he has a
first down on their twenty yard line, you know, with
over two minutes to go, and you know, considering they
didn't stop us at all inside the red zone, I
(04:55):
felt pretty confident. You know, some people did ask me,
I know if you guys talked about during the game,
a couple a couple of my coaches were coming up
to me when we scored a third touchdown and it
was twenty two twenty Are you going for two? I said, no,
there's four or five minutes left in this quarter, and
it's a little too early to chase points. And the
(05:16):
other thing is is, you know, you guys know you've
been around a long time. I usually don't think like this,
but I got a canon as a on the right
leg of a kicker. You know, if it's if we
keep it, you know, even if you keep it and
it's twenty to twenty one, and even if you get
(05:37):
a safety and you can still kick a field goal
to put it in overtime. And I had very good
confidence in our eight, in anything forty and in great
confidence any so, you know, it was a little bit
too early, but overall, I mean, we made some mistakes,
(05:58):
and you know, we turned the ball over twice and
really three times because of one we did recover a fumble,
but you know, after having a first down, we had
a fourth and three and there again, you know, it
was before half.
Speaker 4 (06:13):
We're driving started a nice drive.
Speaker 3 (06:16):
Fourth and three was a little bit long on our
side of the ball, you know, because you know, I
believe it or not. Coach Barry, you know, or are
defensive coordinator. Usually my defensive coordinators think I'm nuts sometimes
because I go for it. He's are you going for it? No,
we're playing pretty decent defense. Let's some two minutes and
a half. Let's pump down deven the territory, you know,
(06:38):
and then they drive the ball and score for nine seconds.
But but getting back to yeah, I mean we got
to secure the ball, but you know you can't. I'm
never gonna fault kids for great effort. And they gave
great effort, and the whole team great get great effort
all game long.
Speaker 2 (06:52):
Yeah, coming down to big plays.
Speaker 1 (06:54):
Third quarterback Lewis I thought, made a couple of really
great throws and then Coach made some really great catches,
which you know, kind of look at that as one
of the differences.
Speaker 4 (07:04):
Yeah, I mean their quarterback played really well.
Speaker 3 (07:07):
Coke is just he's very hard because you know, we
tried to most times, we were either bracketing him or
flat out just double covering, and you know, that made
us one short in the box for the run game.
I think that's why they had a little more successful
we would have liked in the run game, but you know,
(07:28):
you have to do that. But I mean, he made
some great catches.
Speaker 4 (07:30):
I mean.
Speaker 3 (07:32):
The one on the film. You know, he made a
great catch on their sideline and we had two guys
right there. Yeah, but.
Speaker 4 (07:40):
Cleeve hit the white line. Yeah, so that's one.
Speaker 2 (07:43):
I watched it.
Speaker 3 (07:44):
Cleeve hit the white line solid on our film. But
I mean, hey, it's a bang back play. But you know,
I felt and you know, I got co defensive coordinators
this year. It's their first year really doing other than
the the lampiters for the Little Dolphin Game last year,
and you know, I felt we made it a little
too comfortable for him. You know, I get we were
(08:05):
double covering, and I told him during the week, you know,
sometimes we just got to go after him and play
zero on coke and you know, maybe put Tyler reyin
horn on because Tyler can jump. If I don't know
if you've ever seen Tyler jump a Tyler skywalk, and
you know he could go up and help us with
those big ball, you know, on the high balls. But
(08:26):
you know, I think and you know, I met Monday
after practice with our defensive counter as I do because
we talk about next week's game plan. But you know,
we kind of talked about you know, and I think
they realized we.
Speaker 4 (08:38):
Should have rut a little more.
Speaker 3 (08:39):
He made him a little more uncomfortable because to me,
it was almost like he was playing seven on seven
and so but we'll get that taken care of.
Speaker 1 (08:49):
So as you get into this week practice and upcoming,
I mean, I know you don't talk about it, but
McDavid's going to be favored at least the next seven,
if not the next eight games. So is it Yeah,
you're preparing for the next game, but is it going
to be a lot of We're going to work on
individual skills, try to get not focused on who the
(09:12):
opponents as much as trying to get better ourselves.
Speaker 4 (09:14):
I mean, we always do that, but you know, we
got to win a football game.
Speaker 3 (09:19):
So we're really focused on what we're and you know,
and you know, we'll talk about Chambersburg I guess a
few minutes, but uh, we're focused on we gotta win
a football game. We're taking one game at a time.
We're all in this.
Speaker 4 (09:33):
You know.
Speaker 3 (09:33):
This week, you know, I talked I talked on Monday
the team about last year we had a little bit
of hangover losing it over time to Harrisburg. We're a
little banged up. You know, we're a lot banged up
right now going in tonight. But last year we went
down there, we had that long bus ride, uh East,
you know, and it really the score wasn't addictative of
(09:57):
it wasn't quite so loupset East beating about fifty points.
Our guys went down and I thought we were going
to walk on the field, and you know, we were
losing it then the first quarter. First we finally got
it going late in the first half, but I mean,
we can't do that. And you know, this team, you know,
brings some things that challenge you. So some of the
(10:20):
challenge and is a short week. It's so Monday we
worked on We worked on a lot of individual We
also had to get our JV team ready because it
was their first JV game, so they were down at
the other end of the field on Monday, came in
in the morning.
Speaker 4 (10:34):
But Tuesday, you know, we again worked on.
Speaker 3 (10:40):
Some things we want to do on defense, and we
worked on some things especially in the run game. On Wednesday,
you know, we worked a lot of you know, past
game because we had the turf to practice on. You know,
of course we're working special teams both all three days,
so and then Thursday's just you know, put the you know,
tune up in and the haze and the barn and
(11:01):
we go with what we got. So it really kind
of and Monday we couldn't do a whole lot because
of I mean, it was a physical game and we
played on Saturday. I mean, to play these back to
back Saturday games was you know, I hate those Saturday games.
It just messes with your whole schedule. So this week
(11:22):
we kind of felt we were always one day behind,
so we had to really focus on Chambersburg.
Speaker 4 (11:27):
And we'll talk.
Speaker 2 (11:28):
About Chambersburg now.
Speaker 1 (11:29):
And it's funny, I mean, you mentioned last year and
that was gonna be one of my questions. It was
really late in the first half before the Crusaders seemed
like they really got off the bus.
Speaker 2 (11:40):
Definitely were struggling. So what do they bring back and
what do they show us for this Friday.
Speaker 3 (11:48):
Their offense, they have two pretty good receivers. Their quarterback
throwze the ball pretty well. But you know what we mean,
we got to stop that. But you know he's very
good in the run game. They run a play that
Clarkson North ran against us. By the way, I want
to get in as all those people that were saying,
(12:10):
oh there goes mcdevon when we lost to Clarkson, I
think people are finding out they're pretty good.
Speaker 4 (12:16):
And you know, I may be. I mean I coach
against both of them. Now.
Speaker 3 (12:22):
I think they're a better football team than Harrisburg. So
we didn't play well. We played a lot against better
against Harrisburg. But I think they're a better football team.
But they run a play that heart up some in
that Clarkson game, you know, where they they either run
an outside zone or a jet and the quarterbacks reading
(12:43):
and they don't block the end and he's reading the
end and goes out. They got to guard pulling up
and it becomes quarterback power. Uh, he runs out very well.
They they have a couple building run schemes for him. Also,
you know, we we've you know, maybe are looking at
different ways to stop him because if he don't see
what he likes, he will scramble. And you know, if
(13:04):
you get too wide to rush, he's coming right up
the middle. And you know they they showed some resilience.
They were down twenty one nothing actually in the third
first quarter against East and came back and won the
game late twenty eight twenty one, and he's had a
long drive at the end of the game, and you know,
on fourth down as clock was running out, East ruin
the end zone, I got knocked down, so you know,
(13:26):
and then defensively, they run a three stack, which is
we don't see a whole lot and it changes our
blocking schemes, changes how we have to you know, we
can't run some of the plays. And we really kind
of hurt us a little bit against Harrisburg because we
didn't want our young tackles to have to take Mencoln's
(13:47):
comeing off Mencoenn's against MTEP. MTEP had a offensive tackle
is already committed to Maryland and he beat him like
a drum. So we slid. Our protection changed our protection slid.
Our protection had to back and they did a good job.
And we did the same thing a lot of times
with Kevin Brown when he played defensive end. But it changes.
You can't play action like we like to. So, uh,
(14:10):
this defense gives us a little bit, but you know,
if we come out and play.
Speaker 4 (14:15):
I think we should be good.
Speaker 2 (14:17):
You said you were all in the guys themselves.
Speaker 1 (14:20):
I mean, did they come in real positive on Monday
and did they look at this as a penalty call?
Speaker 2 (14:26):
Here? You know, turnover here? We win that game?
Speaker 3 (14:30):
We just talked about, you know. I mean they know
we could have should have won the football game. I
mean we don't really talked about it, and we just
talked at like, you know, our backs are against the wall.
We just gotta keep on playing now.
Speaker 2 (14:44):
So okay, appreciating code, So bring home a W tonight.
Speaker 4 (14:47):
All right, thanks a lot harder. Thanks
