Speaker 1 (00:00):
Party Bowman with alongside Jeff Wecter and my partner Art Shelby.
Speaker 2 (00:05):
Here, Art, we'll let you fire the first question of
a coach.
Speaker 3 (00:08):
Oh wow, okay, boy, that one.
Speaker 4 (00:10):
That one's a surprise here.
Speaker 2 (00:12):
But you're the play by play guy, I think for you.
Speaker 3 (00:15):
Okay, coach, just talk about the play Sebastian last week.
You know, he had the two nice touchdown passes.
Speaker 4 (00:21):
The Holden junior.
Speaker 3 (00:22):
Just talk about the improvement you saw from the week before.
Speaker 5 (00:25):
H You know, he's improved each week, and that's what
I want to see. I think the team has improved,
but I think Sebastian's improved probably the most. You know,
he's starting to understand a little bit more. I mean,
it's just not our plays. He's got to learn fronts,
he's got to learn coverages, he's got to check, you know,
(00:48):
pass probe. He made a nice couple checks. On two
of the three touchdown passes, he made a nice check
and on the third one, you know it really the
play was really designed to go outside on a comeback,
but he saw they played man and he wanted to
take a quick peek at Howard Holton. Howard did a
great job of beating the defender and and you know
(01:09):
he made a great throw. So, you know, very pleased
at how much he's improving. You know, but he'll tell you,
and you know I'll tell you that you know, he
still needs to improve, you know, a lot more, and
I think he will. You know, we meet every day
during his study hall, watch film, talk, talk, and you know,
it feels good because you know he especially we worked
(01:32):
very hard last week on our r pos of his checks,
especially on the whiteboard, and I felt going into the
game that you know, the light finally went on that
he really understood it. So yeah, he played real well.
Speaker 1 (01:48):
You still my first question that the other guy was
gonna ask, just to ask you him talk a little
bit about he was. My player of the game was
Jeral Maru and a sophomore and can do a lot
for sophomore for certain, talked a little bit about him.
He had a really good game, a lot of carries,
and yeah, just talk a little bit about Jerome.
Speaker 5 (02:06):
Jerome had You're right, he had a great game. During
the week. You know, we weren't sure if Swoops zero
Jones Davis was going to be able to play or not,
and so I told him, you know, you know, this
should be your coming out party, and it was. Jerome
has great speed. You know, he's still learned how to
(02:27):
run the football.
Speaker 4 (02:29):
You know.
Speaker 5 (02:29):
One of the things that that guys that have great speed,
you know, coming out of midget or junior high football,
is they're used to kind of just getting outside and
outrunning everybody. That doesn't happen in high school. But you know,
Shady did that. You know, I had to get on
Shady McCoy when he was a freshman. Stopped bouncing outside,
(02:50):
one cut and go and press the safety, and he
made some really good cuts. But he made, you know,
a lot of good decisions. He's starting to understand how
to run the football. I mean, it doesn't matter how talented,
and he's very very talented. It doesn't matter how founded
you are, it's how do you understand to make those runs.
(03:12):
And he showed really good signs. I felt in the
Harrisburg game he showed some signs of that and I
thought he even got better there. And you know, again
just like Sebastian, he got better, but he still needs
to get There's a lot there to get better at.
But I was really pleased with him. You know, made
a nice play. You know last year when we tried
(03:33):
to run in on screams screens to the tailback is
all timing, and his timing wasn't right or else he
was getting too close to the line of scrimmage, all right,
so he ran it the way it was supposed to be.
You know, we were right depth and the right timing,
and you know we picked up a big play there.
So yeah, we're looking forward to you know, him continue
(03:54):
to get better this.
Speaker 1 (03:55):
Year, showing me some sets that that guy admitt Her
thirty four years ago, those pro sets, two wides, a
couple of backs and everything that was common. And when
I see that coming out of you, sometimes it's like, well,
where'd that come from? I'm looking for some world wide receivers,
Not that I mind at two tight ends.
Speaker 2 (04:12):
Sometimes you have to for either protection or for the
running game.
Speaker 4 (04:15):
Well we have we have and I know you like
this because I know you like tight ends, all right.
So we have.
Speaker 5 (04:26):
Probably the most talented group of tight ends as a
group that I've had.
Speaker 4 (04:31):
Since I've been here in twenty eight years.
Speaker 5 (04:33):
You know, obviously Liam's Liam. You know, we we have
the ability. You know, if you think back to last
year now, I wore a a lineman number Chris Thompson
in the East game because what they were doing defense
told me, go double tight end, you know, so Chris
can play there. You know, we tried. We're trying Tron
(04:55):
Dennis because he may end up being our tight end
next year. You know, he's a little roll there yet.
And then Campbell Mills is actually a pretty good tight
end and you know, uh he showed real good speed
when he got in on defense. Uh so we now
have four, you know, and then you add in, you know,
Zach Brown, who can play some tight end and can
play h back. You know, we we can give you
(05:18):
and trust me, we have we have a lot more
formations in with heavier packages than that. But what they
were doing is they run a three stack. It's hard
to go against anyways. And then you know, they start
blitzing a lot and play man, and I knew they
couldn't cover us man, so I just wanted to protect
Sebastian And all right, you want to play man, We're
(05:38):
gonna block eight and we're gonna go.
Speaker 4 (05:40):
Two on two. And that's what we did.
Speaker 5 (05:44):
You know, tight ends probably didn't like it as much
because they want to get out in the past route.
But that's what we had to do for the first quarter.
It was really hard to get a beat on what
they were doing. Logan Howser, who's new coaching our tight
ends and I've got with receivers, he's on the headsets
with me and he said the middle of the first quarter,
(06:04):
he said, you know, I'm not sure it's what they're
doing is designed. I think they're confused, which confused us
because we didn't know where they would be so by
But by after the first quarter, when things got settled down,
we kind of had to feel what they were going
to be in and you know, gave us a chance
to do some different things. But you're going to see
(06:25):
you're going to see some kind of wild formations that
you haven't seen from us before, or at least we
put in one last week. We didn't run it, but
we put a We put a formation in last week
that we haven't run since Matt Johnson was here in
twenty ten. So but we've got some other ones, you know,
believe it or not. I hate to admit it. I
(06:49):
took a formation and adapted it to a play that
the Cowboys ran against the Eagles last Thursday night. I
took that formation and kind of adapted a play to us.
So you'll see that in the coming weeks, and I
may I'll tell you what. Maybe I'll save it for
(07:10):
a home game and when we run, I want to
point up the arm of that so he can be
all happy to.
Speaker 3 (07:17):
Talk about special teams. Obviously at John Ty ran new
and kickoff back for a touchdown and then Garrella is
so good. We were kind of stunned when you guys
missed an extra point there that would have put it
in the mercy rules situation.
Speaker 5 (07:28):
What happened with the kick So first of all, you know,
a lot of good with the special teams, but also
some not so good. Obviously, the kickoff return was very
well blocked. John Tay did a good job. Even the
two you know, Ish and Jerome did a great job
(07:49):
of you know, when John Tay they got in front
of him and start blocking. Ish is just you know,
he's he's just like a bouncing ball that you never
know where it's going to go. On the punt returns,
and had some real nice punt returns. Unfortunately, you know,
we had penalties and you know, I kind of knew it,
(08:11):
but then when I watched a film, one of these
penalties on the punt returns are so unless we have
a pump block on, you know, sometimes we get guys
not doing anything, but we want them to rush, but
a mush rush and des grab and hold up the
guys are trying to b lock. You well, we guys
(08:31):
doing their own thing and trying to go for a
pump block. And now they're coming back and issues making
all kinds of plays and now they're either holding or
blocking in the back.
Speaker 4 (08:41):
But so we think we got that corrected. Aiden.
Speaker 5 (08:46):
You know sometimes, you know, lately, you know, some things
getting his head a little bit. But I think one
of the things that we did is, you know, last year,
Tyler or Johnte were the holders, and I'm not saying
(09:06):
Kielan is not doing a good job at holding.
Speaker 4 (09:10):
So you know, we were gonna bring John tay and
or Tyler back.
Speaker 5 (09:17):
And then we found out that Ellis uh you know,
used to hold for his team last year, so early
in the week.
Speaker 4 (09:25):
We had him work with.
Speaker 5 (09:28):
Aiden, and Aidan really liked its holes, so I think
but yeah, I listen, I missed it. I turned because
I started telling the defensive coaches, hey, you got one more,
one more series. Then we got in the mercy rule,
so you got one more series. Played the starters and
we're gonna put the backups in and I turned out,
Oh my gosh, Aiden.
Speaker 4 (09:48):
You missed it. Now we got to go on extra series.
Speaker 5 (09:51):
And you know, as banged up as we were, I
mean we were without three starters. Uh, you know besides swoops, Uh,
Patrick Wright didn't play and Jamison Crumbled didn't play. So
you know, we had some guys playing with some injuries.
So I wanted to get him out as soon as possible. So,
(10:14):
but we wanted to be in the mercy role.
Speaker 2 (10:16):
Yeah, just funny ask you.
Speaker 1 (10:18):
So you have a fund one of the punts Pump
returns maybe a late starter and tries to get it
full speed.
Speaker 2 (10:24):
Do you tell him, Look, if you don't judge it
right to we just let that ball hit. Is that
the best? Yeah?
Speaker 1 (10:30):
You know, literally you're gonna have to knock a wall
here because you actually can have a real tight end
room now as they say it is true.
Speaker 4 (10:38):
That is true.
Speaker 2 (10:40):
Real quick touch on the defense. And then we'll talk
about quick defense. Last week.
Speaker 4 (10:45):
I like what we did.
Speaker 5 (10:47):
They their quarterback could throw their first team quarterback and
he could really run and they had two or three
pretty good receivers.
Speaker 4 (10:56):
So, you know, I helped out a.
Speaker 5 (10:58):
Little bit with the defensive game plan, but our co
coordinators and Mike Barrion, Conner Marskill did a great job.
You know, we had a formation that they had real
you know, big tendencies, and you know, matter of fact,
I think one of the first maybe the first play,
they came out and they ran it and we had
(11:20):
a great coverage to it, and he was like this
is and I did throw it late and got a
four year old game. But the other thing we were
really concerned about with him was running the football. Uh
So we we wanted to be we wanted to you know,
a little bit heavier in the box. I felt sometimes
(11:41):
against Harrisburg we were lighting the box and they ran
the football on us. And I also felt, you know,
when they went spread, you know, we were playing coverage
and we let.
Speaker 4 (11:51):
Their quarterback play seven on seven football with no rush.
Speaker 5 (11:54):
So this week I said, let's play me and a
lot of man, which we did, go back to old
style bitch mcdevin football and keep the box heavier because
you have a running quarterback. Plus we could blitz and
not let him sit back there and get comfortable like
we did Harrisburg. And that's what we did, and I
(12:15):
think it was a third series. Unfortunately, you know, he
ran a play that they killed ce the east On
and in Gettysburg the first two games.
Speaker 4 (12:24):
Is is a you know, the.
Speaker 5 (12:28):
Jet and he's reading your They don't block your defensive end,
they're reading the defensive end. If he goes out for
the jet, he pulls because of bringing their guard around,
and they'll running a quarterback.
Speaker 4 (12:36):
Power and it's hard. It's hard to defend.
Speaker 5 (12:42):
And I'm like, here's what I want to do is
when that guy comes in joke jet motion, slant your
defensive line to that, all right, because how you stop
power is your backside pressure, not from the front side.
I said, by slamming, we're going to get somebody free
on the back side that he pulls, he's gonna get
(13:04):
hit because there's.
Speaker 4 (13:05):
Nobody to blocking.
Speaker 5 (13:06):
And that's what happened, and unfortunately for them, and unfortunately
you don't like to see injuries. He got a series
injured that game, that play, and three weeks, three series
into the game, they're playing their second team quarterback. But
it doesn't matter. I thought our defense played extremely well.
They did what they needed to do.
Speaker 2 (13:27):
Sedar Cliff a game heart and I always love to do.
Hasn't been the.
Speaker 1 (13:31):
Last couple of years what it had been for so
many years, fifty something to forty.
Speaker 2 (13:35):
Nine and just back and forth.
Speaker 1 (13:36):
And they some great quarterbacks from over there, and some
really good athletes.
Speaker 2 (13:41):
What do we see from Cedarcliffe tonight?
Speaker 5 (13:43):
You know, I've told our guys all week long is
you know we've got on them pretty good the last
couple of years. But you know, they always seen the playoffs.
Other than the twenty twenty two game. When we play
over there, they're gonna play as stuff. They always play
us tough. But over there they play it's even toper.
And you know we have to come out and play tonight.
Speaker 4 (14:05):
I mean, they.
Speaker 5 (14:06):
They they they're the same old Cedar Cliff. They want
to run the football. They want to give you some
heavy sets, then they'll go spread. They have a new
quarterback that throws the ball, decent running back, runs hard.
You know, was I guess midpen player the week last week?
You know the guy we have to stop his number eleven?
Speaker 4 (14:27):
Uh? Secrets of the tight end. Uh?
Speaker 5 (14:29):
They want to get him the ball, uh, in a
lot of different ways. They have another receiver number two
that they like to get the ball to. But uh,
you know, we we've got to come off the bus
stop in the run game and stop the number eleven. Defensively,
they're pretty much the same and they've they've been there
an EVA front, which we like because you know, we
(14:50):
don't have to change our blocking teams like we did
last week. You know, see some things that you know
we're we can get back to and get more into
a sequential play calling then kind of like we had
to against Clarkson and also against last week against Chambersburg.
We can get in and kind of run plays to
(15:11):
set up other plays. So looking forward to it, you
mentioned that.
Speaker 1 (15:15):
Over there, they're always going to give you something different.
Over there, they get hyped up because it's McDavid and
you're just gonna always see something different over there.
Speaker 4 (15:24):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (15:24):
I mean, you know, go back to and they've ran
some wildcat last week and we expect some wildcat, but
you know, they went I think it was twenty nineteen,
they went almost exclusively wildcat, and you know, we started
and then the running back ran up to the line
and then throw a jump.
Speaker 4 (15:40):
Pass for a tight end.
Speaker 5 (15:42):
It was wide open because we all will come and
play the run, so we practiced against it, and they
practiced against that and trip plays this week sounds great.
Speaker 1 (15:50):
Appreciated coach, bestie and loud willing. We'll see you next
week in another w
Speaker 4 (15:54):
All right, sounds good.
