It was fifty six men who decidedto put their names on our Declaration
of Independence. Two twenty six yearolds were the youngest, Thomas Lynch Junior
and Edward Rutledge, both from SouthCarolina. Benjamin Franklin held the distinction of
the oldest at seventy. They weren'tcareer politicians. They were lawyers, tycoons
of business, farmers, teachers,and even one minister, John Witherspoon of

New Jersey. Nine of the fiftysix would die before independence was reached in
seventeen eighty three. There was nobig signing party. In fact, it
took six months for each delegate totravel from their respective towns to Philadelphia to
sign the declaration. The first draftwas presented in late June. On July
second and third, the document wasdebated on and revisions made, mainly by
John Adams. The final copy wasratified on July fourth, seventeen seventy six.
