Speaker 1 (00:00):
A little late. We'll discuss as we took a bite
out of history with Ingles markets. During the Civil War,
the Confederate warship CSS Shenandoah went on a remarkable winning
streak of seeking Yankee merchant in whaling ships all the
way in the Bearing Strait that separates Russia in Alaska.
In one month, they sank twenty four American vessels. But
the only problem it was two and a half months
after Roberty Lee surrendered at Appomatics and the Civil War

(00:21):
had pretty much come to an end. It wasn't until
August of eighteen sixty five that the crew of the
Shenandoah finally received confirmed news that the war had ended
and they were now considered fugitives and responsible for stealing
nearly one million dollars of goods from American ships, equal
to around eighteen million today. Fearing retribution, the crew decided
it best to outrun the remaining American ships in the area,
and it began a seventeen thousand mile journey at sea

(00:44):
NonStop to sail and seek refuge in Liverpool, England. The
lowering of the Confederate flag by the CSS Shenandoah in
England is considered the final flag lowering of the Confederacy
and the only Confederate warship to circumnavigate the globe. This
has been a bite out of history with Ingles markets
