America loses a president unexpectedly. We'll discuss as we take
a bite out of history with Ingles Markets. In eighteen
forty eight, Zachary Taylor defeated both Lewis cass and Martin
Van Buren to become the twelfth President of the United States.
He was mostly known as a strong opponents of secession,
promising to raise arms against any state that tried to
dissolve the Union, even the decade before the start of
the Civil War. On July fourth, eighteen fifty, President Taylor

attended an Independence Day celebration in Washington, d C. On
the future site of the Washington Monument. While there, he
was said to have multiple servings of cherries and ice milk,
and upon his return of the White House he drank
multiple glasses of water. He became very sick that evening
and battled gastro symptoms for four days before passing on
July ninth, eighteen fifty. He was president for only sixteen months.
His personal physician and many historians believe he died of cholera,

during the hot human summer months at that time. Millard
Fillmore was sworn in as the new president on the
morning of July tenth, eighteen fifty. This has been a
