Ingles Markets. The dates is Aprilninth, eighteen sixty five. The spot
is the home of Wilma MacLean inAppomatics Courthouse, Virginia. Wilmur m MacLean
had moved to this house from Manassisto try to escape the war the best
he could. He could soon saythat the war started in his front yard
and ended in his front parlor.It was just after one in the afternoon

that Robert E. Lee arrived atthe house. Ulysses S. Grant arrived
thirty minutes later. Lee was inhis best dressed uniform. Grant's was covered
in mud from the hard ride hehad just finished to break the ice.
Grant brought up the Mexico War,and now he and Lee met when he
was a young soldier. Lee didn'tremember Colonel Joe Bowers had been assigned to
dictate the terms of surrender, butthe gravity of the situation overwhelmed him and

he couldn't stop shaking. A NativeAmerican named Parker took over the duties.
By three pm, it was done. Lee surrendered, and our civil war
was coming to an end. AsLee exited, no one cheered, complete
silence. Grant directed his men toremove their hats as a sign of respect.
