The big cheese we'll discuss as we took a bite
out of history with Ingles Markets. In eighteen thirty five,
a man from New York getted a large wheel of
cheese to President Andrew Jackson, helped spread the word of
the dairy industry in New York state. It was indeed
a large wheel of cheese, weighing in it nearly fourteen
hundred pounds. The enormous wheel of cheese, which was hard
to move, was first kept in the White House festibule,
then the East Room, its largest reception room. Andrew Jackson

decided to let the cheese age, leaving it there for
two years. Finally, in eighteen thirty seven, Jackson decided it
was time to share the cheese wealth and chose George
Washington's birthday as the day. Announcements were made in DC
in the surrounding area for citizens to come to the
White House for the party and partake in this giant
wheel of cheese. People did just that. Hundreds showed up
with knives and knapsacks in hand to grab their piece

of Jackson's cheese. The fourteen hundred pound cheese wheel was
gone in two hours. The age cheese was extremely potent smell,
even causing some ladies to pass out during the party.
The smell was so offensive that the incoming president, Martin
van Buren, had his staff air out the East Room
for days, replacing the curtains and repainting all the walls.
