A race to be won. We'll discuss as we took
a bite out of history with ingles markets. The late
fifties and early sixties showcase an arms race between the
Soviet Union and the United States. One of the sectors
of this arm race was space. At that time, the
Soviet Union was winning. They were the first to launch
a satellite in the space, but nick one in nineteen
fifty seven. They also launched the first man in this
space in April of nineteen sixty one. A month later,

the US launched Alan Shepard in the space, but he
did over the Earth as the Russians did. President John F.
Kennedy pledged his support of an American space program that
would win the space race. On May twenty fifth, nineteen
sixty one, President Kennedy went before Congress and asked for
funding to create the US space program that would beat
the Russians in space, beat them in technological advancement and
in funding. Kennedy saw it as another tool to win
the battle between democracy and communism, his ultimate goal sending

an American to the Moon. By the end of the decade,
Kennedy was not able to see his vision become reality
due to his assassination. However, on July twentieth, nineteen sixty nine,
President Nixon contacted Neil Armstrong via phone after he planted
an American flag on the Moon as a part of
