C socialite Eliza Skidmore and first LadyHelen Taff to plant Japanese cherry trees along
the Potomac. Tap spent time livingin Japan and knew of the great beauty
the Japanese cherry trees offered. Thenthe Japanese Council quickly learned of the ladies
wishes and decided to give the treesfrom the government of Japan to the United

but sadly, disease killed them alongthe journey. A private citizen in Japan
put up the money and replace thetrees. Two years later, on March
twenty seventh, nineteen twelve, thefirst two trees were planted along the Potomac
River with a formal ceremony. Intotal, three thy twenty trees were planted
along the Potomac and on the groundsof the White House. The trees provided
