Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome to Blessings in Christ. I'm Scott Roberts. Blessings in
Christ is also the Church of Christ preaching the Gospel
where a Lord and Savior Jesus Christ of Hea that
believeth and is baptized shall be saved. The Church of
Christ is scriptural in name Romans sixteen sixteen, scriptural in
origin Colossians one eighteen, scriptural in doctrine one Timothy four sixteen,
(00:21):
and scriptural and practice James one and twenty two. Our
lesson today is by James Mills from the Baltimore, Ohio
Church of Christ. He's bringing us a lesson from Exodus
twenty and verse seven. Thou shalt not take the name
of the Lord thy God in vain, for the Lord
will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.
(00:46):
Once again, our lesson is by James Mills, and we
hope that you enjoy the lesson today and please like
us on Facebook. Thank you.
Speaker 2 (00:54):
I want to talk about the third commandment that he
had talked to them about.
Speaker 3 (00:58):
I want to go down to six and seven.
Speaker 2 (01:02):
That's Exodus chapter twenty, verses six, beginning and showing mercy.
Two thousands of them that loved me and keep my commandments.
Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord, die
God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him
(01:26):
guiltless that taketh his name in vain. This morning, I
think we could all agree that the world that we
live in today is growing farther and farther away from God,
God's commandments, God's teachings, just God in general. We've become
(01:53):
a very liberal nation and it continues to lean towards
Satan at his teachings, turning us away from God. The
one thing that really upsets and bothers me as I
go through this life, this world that we live in,
(02:18):
is the failure of people do not take God's name
in vain. I see it everywhere every day, with children,
starting at young ages, with teenagers, and I also sit
(02:39):
in grown adults, people that you would take would know better, right,
But it all starts as children is being taught not
to use the Lord's name in vain. When I was
small and growing up, even before obeying the Gospel, I
(03:01):
was taught from my parents at a young age not
to take God's name in vain, and if we did,
then we would get a whipper and then even went
as far.
Speaker 3 (03:15):
As too, we couldn't use anything that was similar sort
of anything.
Speaker 2 (03:21):
That sounded like We were not allowed to even say
the word crap, that was considered a whipper. We couldn't
say shoot, we couldn't say darn, we couldn't say gosh,
anything that came similar to using God's name in vain
(03:44):
resorted in a punishment. The sad thing about the children today,
they're not taught any different. And as you go through life,
you go through your everyday life, you'll see, I don't
think there's a day that goes by that someone isn't
using the Lord's name in vain. And we'll study today
(04:08):
and we'll talk about those things.
Speaker 3 (04:11):
We'll talk about why.
Speaker 2 (04:13):
Mostly is because people are ignorant, right, they don't know
any better, And it starts in home with the children,
or it's just a neglect of people realizing just what
they're doing, not understanding that what they are saying means.
Speaker 3 (04:32):
So much more than just words.
Speaker 2 (04:35):
Our words matter, Our words matter, And we'll see that
as we go through our study today. As we just
read in Exodus chapter twenty, there God said in the
commandments that he gave to those at Israel that if
you take my name in vain, he said, you won't
be held guiltless. In other words, there's going to be
(04:58):
a price to pay. Whether first answer, people give, well,
this was under the old law, right, this was one
of the ten Commandments, and we're not bound by that.
We have a new covenant. And that's why I asked
them to turn to Matthew chapter twelve, and we'll go
(05:19):
to verses thirty six and thirty seven. When you get
your bibles, follow along and turn with me over to
Matthew chapter twelve, and we'll read verses thirty six and
thirty seven. Jesus speaking says that I say unto you. Notice,
but I say to you that every idl word that
(05:42):
men shall speak, every idol word that men shall speak
to day, shall give a count thereof in the day
of judgment. For by thy words, notice Jesus said, by
thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words.
Speaker 3 (06:05):
Thou shalt be condemned.
Speaker 2 (06:07):
So I think for anyone that wants to argue that
the Ten Commandments are not what we follow today, if
they open their scriptures, Jesus himself said that every word,
every word that we speak, we're going to be judged.
Speaker 3 (06:26):
And I know.
Speaker 2 (06:28):
Sister Barbara used to remind me and several other people
any time we would be teasing, as we call it
teasing about anything, she would remind that every word that
proceedeth out of your mouth, you're going to be judged.
And it would make you think about some of the
things that you thought were funny when you were saying it.
(06:51):
That God may not think it's funny, right, but he
says that we will be We will be condemned by
those words that we speak evil. Three things we want
to try to cover today is we.
Speaker 4 (07:07):
Want to talk about.
Speaker 2 (07:12):
Why God's name is so holy, why it is so
important not to use it in vain. Then we want
to talk about the different ways that we can use
God's name in vain. A lot of people think it's
just by using a cuss word, right, It's more than
just having a saying a curse word with God's name
(07:35):
in it.
Speaker 3 (07:36):
It's more than just swearing on God's name.
Speaker 2 (07:39):
There's a lot more involved in taking God's name in vain.
Just it's more than words. It's also actions. And we
will use God's word as we study today. In John
chapter eight, verse thirty two, tells us that the truth,
(08:00):
we will know the truth, and the truth will make
us free.
Speaker 5 (08:03):
Right.
Speaker 2 (08:04):
So it's not anything that's going to be hid, it's
what we can find in God's words.
Speaker 3 (08:10):
So let's first talk about God's name in itself.
Speaker 2 (08:15):
Why is it so important for us not to use
it in vain? When you turn over to Matthew chapter six,
Jesus is speaking there on the Sermon on the Mountain.
He talked to us about how that we should pray,
and how precious and how holy our Lord and Savior's
(08:40):
name is.
Speaker 3 (08:42):
Matthew chapter six, Go to verse nine.
Speaker 2 (08:47):
After this matter, therefore, pray ye our Father, which are
in heaven.
Speaker 3 (08:55):
Hell old, notice be thy name.
Speaker 6 (09:00):
Come.
Speaker 3 (09:00):
Thy will be.
Speaker 2 (09:01):
Done in earth as it is in heaven. So what
he said, Halloa, When we talk about halloaed, what does
that word mean. It means holy. It means holy in
God's name. His words are holy. And anytime we refer
(09:23):
to God, we need to realize that it's a hallowed name,
it's precious. But either out of ignorance or out of neglect,
we tend to throw his name out there as if
it means nothing. Jesus said, Halload is his name so
(09:43):
we are to honor that. We're to always give it
the prestige that it deserves. Turn Over to Psalms Chapter
one eleven. Psalms one eleven, and we'll talk about go
down to Versus seven through ten.
Speaker 3 (10:06):
The works of his hands Notice Psalms one to eleven.
The works of his hands are verity and judgment.
Speaker 2 (10:13):
All his commandments are sure, They stand fast forever and ever,
and are done.
Speaker 3 (10:23):
In truth and uprightness. He sent redemption into his people.
Speaker 2 (10:30):
He hath commanded his covenant forever holy.
Speaker 3 (10:34):
Notice and Reverend is his name.
Speaker 2 (10:41):
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom
and good understanding. Have all they that do his commandments
his praise and dearth forever? Holy and Reverend is his name.
When we talk about reverend, what does that mean? It
(11:01):
means there's no other, no other, only Christ, only Christ.
How many people do you hear about today? How many
reverends do we have in our country?
Speaker 3 (11:18):
How many reverends do we have in our world?
Speaker 2 (11:23):
Those that are taking a title that only belongs to God.
Speaker 3 (11:29):
Holy and Reverend only is his name.
Speaker 2 (11:33):
But we have those that pretend to be somebody that
they're not, somebody that God himself said no, no, no,
that is only a title that belongs to me. But
yet they throw the name reverend. They throw the name father.
Speaker 3 (11:55):
Around as if it's nothing right, as if.
Speaker 2 (11:59):
It means something to them. But God said, no, that
is only my only my name. I am the only
one to be reverend. Matthew Chapter twenty three, beginning there
(12:20):
with verse eight, and go down through a verse eleven.
But be not ye called rabbi. Excuse me, for one
is your master, even Christ. And all ye are brethren,
(12:47):
And call no man your father upon the earth, for one.
Speaker 3 (12:54):
Is your father, which is in heaven. Neither be ye
called masters, For one is your master, even Christ.
Speaker 2 (13:09):
But he that is greatest among you, what shall be
your servant?
Speaker 3 (13:19):
Call no man, rabbi, I call no man father. There
is no reverend. There's only one master, one reverend, one holy.
Speaker 2 (13:31):
And what does he say at the end there, even
the greatest among us, our Lord and Savior Christ. He says,
I will become as a servant to you. I will
become as a servant to you. But yet we have
people that are using the Lord's name in vain.
Speaker 3 (13:56):
Psalms chapter twenty.
Speaker 4 (13:58):
Nine, verse two, back up to one also given to
the Lord, all ye might have given to the Lord.
Speaker 3 (14:17):
Glory and strength given to the Lord.
Speaker 2 (14:23):
Verse to the glory to unto his name, worship the
Lord and the beauty. What of holiness? God's name is
not anything to be taken lightly. It's not anything that
we just spew and speak meaningless. When we talk about vain,
(14:52):
what does that mean? It says for no reason, thoughtless,
that's what vain means. How do we take God's name
in vain? Let's look at the different ways. A lot
(15:15):
of us think it's just swearing, cursing. It's much more,
much more. Examples. How many times have you heard someone
maybe we are guilty of it. Jesus Christ, right, Jesus Christ.
(15:38):
There was a guy that used to work with with us.
Speaker 3 (15:41):
His name was James.
Speaker 2 (15:42):
Also, his favorite any every day, all day long is
Jesus Christ Man. It's all he evers say. One day,
Dad says, hey, you've got to hush that up.
Speaker 3 (15:59):
Hush it up.
Speaker 2 (16:02):
He didn't think about what he was doing, because he
had never put a thought.
Speaker 3 (16:08):
Into what he was saying.
Speaker 2 (16:09):
But if he hid his finger with the hammer, Jesus
Christ man in vain.
Speaker 3 (16:19):
Using God's name OMG OMG.
Speaker 2 (16:28):
You hear it out of little four year olds, teenagers, adults,
Oh my God, Oh my God, every day, every day.
Speaker 3 (16:40):
I don't think there's a day that goes by that
we won't hear that text.
Speaker 2 (16:46):
You're like, well, I'm not saying it, I'm texting it.
OMG O m G OMG. Using God's name in vain?
Is there any meaning? I'm sure it's not praising God
when it's oh my God, right, it's using God's name
(17:06):
in vain.
Speaker 3 (17:09):
For no reason thoughtless? What about I swear to God,
I swear to God?
Speaker 5 (17:17):
Right?
Speaker 3 (17:19):
Have you said that one? Have you heard that one?
I swear to God?
Speaker 2 (17:24):
Right? I swear to God. And probably the last one
we want to talk about is the G D right GD.
I'm sure all of us hear people day in and
(17:46):
day out use the GD word GD.
Speaker 3 (17:48):
This ged that I had an uncle. Every other word
out of his mouth was GED this ged that GD
it to hell?
Speaker 2 (17:59):
Right?
Speaker 3 (18:02):
And what do we do?
Speaker 2 (18:04):
What do we do as Christians when we hear people
using God's.
Speaker 3 (18:10):
Name in vain? Do we ignore it? Do we laugh
about it?
Speaker 2 (18:20):
A lot of times we think it's funny, right, because
these people start they.
Speaker 3 (18:24):
Going to rank like ged this, you know, or I
swear to God.
Speaker 2 (18:34):
When we go along and we ignore it, we should
speak out, speak up against our Lord and Savior deserves respect, honor.
Speaker 3 (18:51):
His name means.
Speaker 2 (18:54):
Everything Matthew chapter seven. We see that it goes beyond.
It goes beyond just using swear words curse words.
Speaker 3 (19:18):
There's more to using God's name in vain than just
our words.
Speaker 2 (19:24):
Matthew Chapter seven and verse Let's go to verse twenty one.
Not everyone noticed that said unto me, Lord Lord, shall
enter into the Kingdom of heaven. But he that doeth
the will of my Father which is in heaven.
Speaker 3 (19:50):
Many will say to me in that day, Lord Lord,
have we not prophesied in thy name? In thy name?
Speaker 2 (19:56):
Have cast out devils in thy name? Doesn't many wonder
for works?
Speaker 1 (20:02):
Then?
Speaker 2 (20:02):
Will I professor to them? I never knew you depart
from me? Ye that what worked iniquity? What's Jesus telling us.
Speaker 1 (20:19):
That?
Speaker 2 (20:19):
If you go about these people that go about claiming
to heal prophesy, doing all these wonderful works and putting
his name in that, thinking that they're doing what God
asked them to do, using his name to make it
(20:43):
mean something that it's not.
Speaker 3 (20:48):
It's going to be a sad day.
Speaker 2 (20:49):
Jesus says, since I'm going to tell you depart, I
never knew you. All these false doctrines, false teachings, denominations
that we can't find in God's word, and they're using
his name in vain, trying to convince people that this
(21:11):
is the word of God, this is the teachings of God.
Speaker 3 (21:17):
It's vain worship.
Speaker 2 (21:20):
It's taking his name and using it on something that
isn't scriptural, isn't God's commandments.
Speaker 3 (21:28):
Using God's name in vain hypocrisy.
Speaker 2 (21:43):
When we talk about being a hypocrite, it's claiming to
be something that we're not. If we profess to be
a Christian, we're carrying that name of.
Speaker 3 (22:00):
Christ with us.
Speaker 2 (22:02):
Right, If we are hypocrites, we're not living the life
of a Christian.
Speaker 3 (22:11):
We're carrying that name, Christ's name.
Speaker 2 (22:14):
With us, yet we are not living as a Christian.
Then we are using God's name in vain. Matthew chapter fifteen.
Let's start verse seven. Let's go down through verse nine.
(22:37):
Jesus again speaking, says, ye, hypocrites, well did isaiahs prophes
of you?
Speaker 3 (22:45):
Saying this?
Speaker 2 (22:46):
People draw nie to me with their mouth and honor
to me with their lives, and what these says. Their
heart is far from me, but in vain they do
worship me, teaching for doctrines, the commandments of Me. Jesus said, hypocrite, ye, hypocrites,
(23:09):
you're using my name in vain, he says, you're professing
to be a Christian, but yet your works, your works
don't show my name through it.
Speaker 5 (23:24):
You're living the life of a hypocrite, not.
Speaker 3 (23:35):
Keeping a promise that we've made to God. Let's back
up into the Old Testament. Let's go over to Numbers.
Speaker 2 (23:46):
Want to go to Numbers, chapter thirty, beginning there.
Speaker 3 (23:58):
And we'll read verses one and to.
Speaker 2 (24:01):
Moses speaken to the heads of the tribes concerning the
children of Israel, saying, this is the thing which the
Lord hath commandmed.
Speaker 3 (24:16):
If a man vow wy vow and to the Lord.
Speaker 2 (24:22):
Swearing off to bind his soul with a bond, he
shall not break his word. He shall do according to
all that proceedeth out of his mouth. Once we have
(24:43):
confessed Christ before men, let everyone know.
Speaker 3 (24:51):
That Jesus Christ is our Lord and Savior.
Speaker 2 (24:54):
And we've been buried in that watery grave of baptism
we have accepted Christ as our Lord and savior, right,
and there's a covenant there that's made between us and
God at that time, and you're letting God know that
I am ready to give my life to you, and
(25:18):
I'm ready to live the life that you would have
me to live. And if we don't live up to
that promise, we don't do what we said we will do,
then it's all in vain, right, using God's name.
Speaker 3 (25:40):
In vain?
Speaker 2 (25:46):
What about people that take his name and use it
as their name. How many Jesuses do you know in
the world today, right? And we don't think anything about it.
They don't think anything about it. Jesus Jesus, right, Jesus
(26:08):
trying to take our Lord and Savior's name and use
it as they're all.
Speaker 3 (26:17):
To us. It may not seem as any.
Speaker 2 (26:19):
Big deal, right about. What do you think God thinks
about it? Or what does God's word tell us about it?
Speaker 3 (26:26):
What did he say?
Speaker 2 (26:28):
No other name, right, no other name, only His, only his?
There was a play going around. I don't know, I
never saw it. I think that was a musical. Jesus
Christ the Superstar, Jesus Christ the Superstar. How many street
(26:52):
names do you see Holy Ghost way Jesus Christ boulevard,
and people don't take any thought.
Speaker 3 (27:07):
About any of this.
Speaker 2 (27:08):
Right as we began our lessen this morning, people are
using God's name in vain because out of ignorance or neglect.
I tend to think ignorance is probably the leading cause.
(27:30):
So now let's look at why we should respect God.
Why should he be the only one that deserves.
Speaker 3 (27:43):
Our highest regard.
Speaker 2 (27:46):
Remember in Exodus chapter twenty, when we read verse seven. There,
God said that he will not hold anyone guiltless who
takes his name in vain. In other words, there's going
to be a cost. There's a price to pay for
(28:07):
using God's name in vain. Psalms Chapter eight, Psalms eight
versus one.
Speaker 3 (28:25):
Excuse me one and two.
Speaker 2 (28:29):
Oh Lord, our God, how excellent? Notice how excellent is
thy name in all the earth? Who has set thy
glory above the heavens. Notice how excellent out of the
(28:51):
mouths of babes and sucklings, hast thou art than streats
because of thine enemies, that thou might'st stealed the enemy
and the avenger. How excellent excellent is his name?
Speaker 6 (29:10):
I want to go over to the Book of Leviticus.
I want to go over to Leviticus. I want to
read after Moses. We'll go to chapter twenty four.
Speaker 3 (29:27):
I want to read about the situation.
Speaker 2 (29:29):
I wonder someone didn't think that when God gave Moses
those commandments. They didn't think that it was that serious, right,
that third commandment that we read about, not you're taking
God's name in vain.
Speaker 3 (29:47):
They didn't take it serious. Yeah,
