Don Kates Blue Hen's Basketball Coaches Show presented by First
State orthoped X, featuring men's basketball head coach Martin Inglesby
and women's basketball head coach Sarah Jenkins on ninety four
to seven w dsd FM, Fox Sports twelve ninety eight
and the iHeartRadio App. Welcome to La Cossa Pasta Restaurant
in new Ark and.

Speaker 2 (00:18):
We'll welcome in to Lacasso Pasta Restaurant in new Ark
for the Blue Hens Basketball Coaches Show, then by First
State or theoped X. You're listening to ninety four to
seven w DSDFM and the iHeartRadio App. You're home for
Delaware Hoops and I'm Scott Klaskin. Tonight we'll break down
both men's and women's basketball. We'll talk women's BASKETBLL with
Sarah Jenkins coming in with a program that is as

(00:40):
hot as any team in the CAAA, in fact, the
hottest team of the CAA. They won five games in
a row. We'll talk with her. She's also brought a
player that scored forty five points over the weekend on
her way to being named CAAA Player of the Week,
and Dia Sharizia is here. As well. Give it up
for her, and then I'll be talking a little bit
with rookie sensation in five times c AA Rookie of

(01:01):
the Week Isaiah Pasha. That'll come in just a few minutes.
Give it up for Isaiah. But first, welcome in the
head coach of del where Ben's basketball team, Martin Anglesby
is here under the weather, but we're good to go.
Absolutely nothing. If you're under the weather, it's only your turn,
I guess, because the whole team has gone through it,
it seems this year unfortunately, But thank you for being

(01:22):
here as we start obviously a difficult week for the Hens.
How do you digest it? I mean you're in every
single game, it seems you guys are there with a
chance to win, especially twice now against the top team
in the CIA. Had a great shooting half in the
great shooting game, I guess, great game overall on the
offensive end against Campbell, but unable to finish these games

(01:47):
and get these wins. How are you digesting?

Speaker 3 (01:49):
Yeah?

Speaker 4 (01:49):
I mean it's been hard.

Speaker 5 (01:50):
I mean I think this group has played some really
good basketball and we don't have a lot to show
for it in the win column.

Speaker 4 (01:56):
I think there's accountability across the board.

Speaker 5 (01:58):
But it's my responsibility continue to lead in these moments
and try to pick these guys up and stay as
positive as we can.

Speaker 4 (02:05):
A lot more basketball to be played.

Speaker 5 (02:06):
We got a home stretch against two basketball teams Thursday
and Saturday, but you know, continue to get back to
practice and teach and show and learn, and again, I
think we're one or two plays away from it clicking
and get over the hump, and we need a little
things to go our way and a little luck or
on one defensive stop or two defensive stops, or the
ball to bounce our way, and just trying to continue

(02:28):
to stay positive in this adversity that we're dealing with
and just get back to the practice court and try
to get better.

Speaker 2 (02:34):
Well, you've always been a positive coach, and you try
to see the positive things in the games and every
time we talk to you on the post game show,
So that doesn't change. But I have noticed maybe a
little bit this year, and I don't know if it's
a change or not, but there was certainly a play.
I think Campbell was making a run and maybe there
was a timeout or a stoppage. You kind of came
out and kind of put hands out like, Okay, it's

(02:54):
all right, we're under control. And I've noticed that maybe
multiple times this year, where maybe you are certainly staying
calm and may be in hopes that the players do
the same. Is that more intentional this year?

Speaker 4 (03:03):
Well, did you miss my first half?

Speaker 5 (03:04):
When I stay on the table and I black and
blue hand caught that.

Speaker 4 (03:07):
My daughter caught that. She was like, Dad, you can't
act like that.

Speaker 2 (03:11):
I'm glad we weren't next to you.

Speaker 5 (03:12):
But I just think, you know, in these moments like
that's where these guys need to see me as poised
as ever. And I can't be rattled. I can't be frustrated.
I you know, I didn't think we got the best
whistle on Saturday. You know, all these things kind of
play into some of the emotions of it. But if
I'm unsettled, I'm frustrated. I'm emotional that you know seeps

(03:33):
to our players. And I got to be in complete
control in those huddles and be able to effectively communicate
what we need to do, what we need to change,
what we need to adjust. I think my staff does
a really good job of calming me down because I
can get a little intense at times in those moments,
but it's just, you know, I got to stay there
for our guys and keep believing in them and keep
coaching forty minute game. A lot of things can happen,

(03:54):
and I can't overreact or get too emotional when you
know the ball doesn't bounce our way, and you know,
hopefully we can continue to take that course of action and.

Speaker 4 (04:05):
It's gonna bounce our way, right.

Speaker 5 (04:06):
We got to continue to get one and it's amazing
what one win can do for the confidence of a team,
and then hopefully we can get on a roll at end.

Speaker 3 (04:12):
Of the season.

Speaker 2 (04:12):
Well, you guys are rolling on offense, certainly, ninety one points,
you shot sixty five percent from the field. Twenty seven
assists is the most assists in the game in the
nine years that you have been here. Guys are sharing
the basketball, thirteen threes, five players and double figures. It's
everything you'd want in an offensive effort. I mean, it
was one of the best offensive performances that that we've seen,
and fans listeners should have left the broadcast or the

(04:37):
arena feeling like, Wow, what a fun team to watch
and what a great experience. Unfortunately, the defensive side of
things weren't there. We'll talk about defense, but are you
able to compartmentalize it all and say, like, Wow, what
a great what a great offensive game we had. We
got to figure out the other stuff, but wow, look
at what we did on offense.

Speaker 5 (04:53):
Yeah, and I think we all know, like, we got
to get better defensive if we're gonna win these games.
You know, we can't get into a first team to
one hundred wins. I mean, we do have a team
that can really shoot the ball. They're developing a great
chemistry on the offensive end. They share it, they trust
each other.

Speaker 4 (05:06):
But we got to.

Speaker 5 (05:07):
Be more disciplined, and we got to be tougher, and
we've got to be able to get more stops on
the defensive end, whether it's given up too many offensive rebounds,
whether it's turning over against pressure. We're allowing teams to
get confident. And I think we talked as a staff
the other day, you know, and all these losses we've had,
we've either had the lead or your one possession in
the second half and we just haven't been able to

(05:28):
get it done.

Speaker 4 (05:28):
And I think it's kind of come down to just
digging in.

Speaker 5 (05:32):
And gritty and pride on the defensive end in that
fight to be able to get one of these and
hopefully that can build some confidence that you know, and
then and then how do we practice that?

Speaker 4 (05:40):
Right?

Speaker 5 (05:40):
My thing with our group too, is like four minute games,
end of the game and we're just doing all situational
basketball where we're coach talking and communicating in those moments
because we've been there at the last media time out,
we just haven't been able to get it done.

Speaker 2 (05:54):
And when you are talking about defense and you are
coaching it up with your team and watching, has there
been like one glaring like this is where we're not
gonna done defensively or is it just multiple things? Like
what are you seeing that that has allowed teams to
score high numbers against this team this year?

Speaker 4 (06:12):
Yeah, I mean I think it's the offensive rebounding.

Speaker 5 (06:15):
And then you know, we pride ourselves to trying to
keep teams off the baseline and not get through the outside.
Coach Phillips talks about it all the time. That's what
we showed our guys today. And when we don't do that,
or we're not disciplined or the habits aren't there, then
we're putting a lot of pressure on rotations and then
the backboard, and you know, it's just come down to
like guys just doing it and getting it done. And

(06:36):
we'll continue to harp on it every day and practice.
But you know, like the defensive side of the ball is,
if we're gonna make a run here, we got to
get better and we got to find ways to do it.
And you know, you come watch those practice for a
hour forty five minutes, it's gonna be all defense, right,
We're gonna continue to preach that. You know, I'm gonna
scrap how we've kind of got into a lot of
five on five and we're just gonna continue to work
on our defense of footwork and our blockouts. And we

(07:00):
put a bubble. I've never been a guy that puts
a bubble on the rim. During my days at Notre Dame,
Coach Bray would always be like, I can't tell my
offensive guys there are going to be a bubble on
the rim. But we'll put a bubble up there and
we'll shoot it, and then guys are gonna have to
go to war on the backboard. And you know, the
guys that are getting done in practice are gonna get
rewarded more more minutes in the.

Speaker 2 (07:17):
Game, don't it. First off, don't invite these people to practice.
They'll have You'll have thousands of people coming in and
they're more than welcome, you know, you know what. I'm
sure you would open the door for him. But it's
good to kind of get an insight on whatuch you
guys are working on, as we do have two more
weeks of the regular season, and then, of course anything
can happen down in DC. I do want to ask you.
You start off the show mentioned you're you're fighting a
little bit of cold. I hope you do feel feel better,

(07:39):
but uh, Trent Middleton is just another name on a
long list of players that have missed time due to
an illness.

Speaker 6 (07:45):
Uh.

Speaker 2 (07:46):
And it was noticeable obviously, Isaiah picked up a fourth
foul and there was no other point guard available in
the game. But Kevin Riley's missed three games because of
a flu. Eric Timko, who had an iron man streak
of never missing a game, missed the game because of
a flu. Tron missed two games because of a flu.
Obviously Niles missed a couple games because of a hip.
Not to make excuses or anything, but just to learn more.

(08:07):
And from the coaches standpoint, John Cam's the only starter
that's played the start every game this season. How does
that affect the fluidity of the season when it's not
necessarily one guy's out for a long stretch, it's one
guy's out here, one guy's out here, one guy's out here,
And how does this affect thing?

Speaker 4 (08:23):
Yeah, I mean it makes this challenging.

Speaker 5 (08:25):
I mean, I didn't get the call that Trent wasn't
going to play until I'm all my way down at
two fifteen on Saturday, that he wasn't feeling well and
he had had some food poisoning the night before, couldn't
get off the toilet, and it just wasn't going to
be available. And obviously it impacts us from a guard standpoint,
a ball handling standpoint, I guess, especially against a team
that presses, and to be able to have those two

(08:45):
guys play together at the end of the game, that
would have helped us. But you know, I think we
know everybody deals with some adversity. You got to be
able to respond the next man up. But we just
you know, for this group to really maybe take a step.

Speaker 4 (08:56):
Forward, we need everybody available.

Speaker 5 (08:57):
And you're trying to mix and match personnel groupings and
pairings through the course of the game just to help
you that night. And you know, we're in a tough
stretch right now and you're evaluating every day, like what
is our lineup and who do we go to, who
do we trust? Who can we play here? How do
we finish a half, how do we start a half?
How do we finish the game? And that's something that
coaching staff and I talk about all the time.

Speaker 2 (09:17):
One of the guys that really has progressed so much
since the start of the season, and he started off
well also, but ninus Sis only one turnovers. One turnover
was off the ball. Wasn't that he threw the ball away,
it was an offensive foul. That's Isaiah Pashi. He's give
me our next guest on the show. But before we
take it to break it and talk to Isaiah when
we come back. He's shooting sixty two percent for the

(09:38):
field over his last six games. He's distributing the basketball,
hes scoring the basketball back to back weeks, the CAAA
Rookie of the Week. Where has he grown the most
in your perspective.

Speaker 5 (09:46):
Yeah, I just think getting comfortable in our offense you know,
with balancing being a score, being a distributor. I was
so proud of him in the first half. I told him,
we watched film today. The first twenty minutes of the
game on Saturday, I think was the best twenty minutes
he's played in his college career. Right He's not some things,
he's distributing, he's getting guys shots. I mean, he knows,
and we watched it today. He's got to be better
for us defensively. You know, he's got great size, but

(10:08):
he's got to continue to take pride in shutting down
the opponent's perimeter and rebounding the basketball. But I just
think a guy that's getting comfortable in our offense, in
our flow, he knows he's such an important piece. It's
probably nobody I'm harder on in our program than our
point guard. So I challenged him every day, and he's
unbelievably coachable. He wants to learn, he wants to process things,

(10:32):
he wants to get better every day, and I just
think he's in a really good flow right now, in
a rhythm. You know, he's earned all these accolades, these
individual accolades, but I think the most important thing he
wants his team to win. And I told him today, like, hey,
let's get one of these Rookie of the week's coming
off two big wins this weekend, and then they can
ship that Rookie of the Year trophy up to Newark
when the season's over.

Speaker 4 (10:50):
But you know, he's been a pleasure to coach. He's
the ultimate team guy.

Speaker 5 (10:53):
He wants to win, he wants to lead, and you know,
I think you've just seen a guy that's gotten better
and better week by week, and it test him into
our coaching staff for all they have done, you know,
from a development standpoint with him and just understanding what
a good shot is, when to pass, when to shoot,
what he needs to do from a tempo standpoint on
the offensive end, and just being the downshift a little
time at times instead of just because he's got elite

(11:16):
speed in the open floor, but just you know, getting
us into our stuff in the half court running a team.
And I think that's an area of growth for him
as he continues to develop.

Speaker 2 (11:22):
Well, we we love watching that growth and we're glad
he's got a chance to to win another a Rookie
of the Week, perhaps with wins this week two home games,
we get to watch. Now, let's get to talk with him.
We'll take a time out, we come back. Isaiah Pasha
will be on the program for the first time. Listen

we are joined it now by Isaiah Pasha. Isaiah, Welcome
to the program. Hello Scott, I'm doing very well. I'm
doing very well. What an impressive season you are having.

(13:46):
We're so glad that we get to watch you play.
And what a great week you're coming off of. I think, undoubtedly,
and coach Inglesby said it the best at least first
half of basketball that we've seen you play all season.
Got into some foul trouble in the second half, but
get in and all that. What if you enjoyed, though,
playing for for Martin Nichols, being this staff for the
most this season.

Speaker 6 (14:05):
I mean, I love the other ware.

Speaker 10 (14:06):
Just having an opportunity to just come out here and
play freely under coach ingles being the coach instead of
them trusting me the most.

Speaker 6 (14:11):
And that's really it.

Speaker 2 (14:13):
And we're so glad that that you're you're able to
And I asked most of the freshmen this question coming
into the year, what's been the biggest difference for you,
either on the court or off the court, making that
adjustment to playing college basketball.

Speaker 10 (14:27):
I would probably say just the physicality, that's the biggest
thing for me, and just staying levelheaded and dedicated to
the grind every day.

Speaker 2 (14:36):
Well, you talk about the physicality, how much then did
that year at Saint Thomas Moore help you and getting
ready to face at that physicality because I know they
gave you a year to make get the ball in
your hands a little bit more, you gain some weight
over there. How much did that help you out by
the side.

Speaker 6 (14:50):
And the problem.

Speaker 10 (14:51):
They helped me a lot just playing for another great coach,
just the developments side of it and everything like that.

Speaker 2 (14:56):
And let's go through kind of the background of how
you got to Delaware because it is an interesting journey
for you. Obviously, you're coming out of high school, you're
playing in the Philadelphia Catholic League and you decide that
Rick Pattino is going to be your coach over at IONA.
Coach Patino decides to go to Saint John's and then
you decide, with the help I think of some of

(15:17):
the IONA staff or Saint John's staff, to go to
to Saint Thomas Moore and prep for a year. So
tell us how it all worked out that you found
yourself at Delaware when it's all said and done, because
we're glad that you are.

Speaker 10 (15:28):
I mean, like you said, it was a long journey,
but yeah, thanks to that coaching staff over there to
give me the Saint Thomas Moore and then me just
weighing my options believing in Delaware and coach Ingles being
and them always being in my recruitment since they first
offered me, and then like you said, I mean St.
Thomas Moore waiting my options there and then if I'm
a home at Delaware.

Speaker 2 (15:49):
Yeah, it wasn't a new It wasn't new to you
Delaware when they offered you a second time or when
when you were opened up your recruitment again. They offered
you in the fall of twenty twenty two as well,
so you were familiar with with with Martin Ingles, be
for sure. What was it like then for you? After
it's all said done, you're excited to come to Delaware.
The schedule comes out now and we've got at Iona
at Saint John's two teams that you are connected to.

(16:11):
What was going through your mind when you were playing
those games?

Speaker 10 (16:14):
I mean, like you said, I mean I was really excited.
It felt like a RIVALI game for me just because
of everything that went on with them. But I tried
to stay levelhead and not let it get the emotions
get the best of me.

Speaker 6 (16:23):
But it was fun.

Speaker 2 (16:23):
Certainly would have any right to have some emotions going
through that because you have some connections there when we're
excited that you're at Delaware, and I read that when
you said someone asked you about coming to Delaware prior
to the season and some goals that you had, and
he said, my main goal individually this of course the
team goals to win basketball games, but individually, my main
goal in Coach Inglesy's goal for me is to come

(16:44):
into Delaware and make an immediate impact and be Rookie
of the Year. Well, you're only the third freshman starter
in a season opener under coach Hinglesby and the nine
seasons that he has been here, so check that off
the list. You're making an immediate impact. You came in,
we were able to start right away, and then you
lead CIA rookies in points per game, assists per game,

(17:04):
defensive rebounds per game, your second in total rebounds, your
third in block shots. So you feel like you're on
your way to accomplishing these goals. Yes, sir, Yeah, it's
it's been a fantastic season. You spoke about your relationship
with coach engles By interview for the post game show
at North Carolina A and T and and thank you
A and T. By the way, we're way up top,
so you had to climb the stairs to continue to

(17:26):
do the interview. You talked about relationship with Coach Hingles.
We how much you enjoy playing for Coach Hingles being
a form point guard himself. Tell us a little bit
about your relationship with Coach.

Speaker 10 (17:34):
Like I said before him, the biggest thing with him
is just like the belief he has in me and
the mutual respect we have with each other.

Speaker 6 (17:40):
Been us able to being to communicate back.

Speaker 10 (17:42):
And forth, and him being a point guard, he gives
a lot of like the game and knowledge to me
as me this is my like my second year of
being a point guard in my first year was at
same time as more when I was in high school,
I was more.

Speaker 6 (17:52):
Like a score.

Speaker 10 (17:53):
So him just being able to give that feedback to
me just allows me to feel comfortable under him.

Speaker 2 (17:57):
You must enjoy and dislike and like at the same
time he is hard on you, and when when he's
the first to give you a compliment, but he's the
first to also say where you need to improve? How
does that feel? Knowing that like he cares so greatly
about your.

Speaker 10 (18:11):
Success, people will probably be surprised, but that's where I
come from, like a background like that, someone being hard
on me, and I've always hurt. Like when someone's hard
on you, they care. If someone's not saying nothing, then
that's when they don't care. So him being hard on me,
I just take it in and I like.

Speaker 6 (18:26):
Feed off of that.

Speaker 2 (18:28):
Well that the first game, the first twenty minutes, I say,
of that came on Saturday, I don't think there was
anything to be hard on you about, because, like he said,
some of the best basketball we've seen all season from
you continue to grow and grow diggers in the last games,
sixty two percent from the field over the last six games.
I mean you're taking good shots and that three balls
starting to drop pretty pretty well. Also great form on
the on the shots and then nine as siss last game,

(18:49):
you were finding your teammates. Do you feel like you're
in your best rhythm that you've been in so far
this season?

Speaker 6 (18:55):
Absolutely?

Speaker 10 (18:55):
I mean the biggest thing is just feeling confident. I
put a lot of work in, like on the court
by myself once or twice in the gym of my own,
So like when you're starting to believe yourself, you feel confident.

Speaker 2 (19:03):
Just want to show, and it has been showing. Coach
did mention and we'll talk to coach about and we
have talked about. Offense has been there, the defense hasn't
always necessarily been there. Where do you feel like you
can grow as a defensive player.

Speaker 10 (19:14):
As well, mainly off the ball, Just like listening to
Coach BP, taking the things that he's teaching us in practice,
just the little details and just giving more effort.

Speaker 2 (19:22):
And it's gonna come. I can tell. This week at
the Bob Cartner Center. We got two rivalry games coming in.
It's gonna be there against Drexel and Hofstra. It'll be
you know, their first look at you. For the most part,
didn't play against Drexel. I know you were hurt. You
toughed it out against Hofstra up there on the road.
But Drexel's gotta be watching film and their word because
they didn't get you the first time around up up
in Philadelphia. You play the game with such a joy

(19:45):
when you're out there, you can tell you're smiling and
see it during warm up, so you can just tell
you're enjoying the game of basket. Where did that come from?

Speaker 10 (19:52):
I mean, I've been playing since I was six years old.
So I always had a love and a passion for
the game. So that's where it comes from, just being
grateful for the opportunity and just to love for the game.

Speaker 6 (20:00):
So I'm always out there playing with a smile.

Speaker 2 (20:02):
Well, we can see it and we appreciate you bringing
that to to a new Ark and talk with Isaiah Pasha,
the front runner for a Rookie of the You gotta
bring it home though we still got two more weeks
got to bring you gotta bring it home. And I
used to get a vote. I don't get a vote anymore.
So if they hold Delaware leaving for Conference USA against you,
that's that's not on That's not on us. So that
they can't you gotta make it so that they can't
have any doubts of who the best rookie of the year.

(20:24):
I've read off those stats and you're leaded in almost
every category. It's such a great season and we're glad
that you're you're doing it for you all start on
Saturday and Sunday. Skills Challenge, three point contest, dunk contests.
Which would you prefer to compete it if you had
a chance.

Speaker 6 (20:46):
That's a good question. I'll probably say the contest.

Speaker 2 (20:50):
The dunk contest. What would be a dunk that you
could that you can impress the judges.

Speaker 10 (20:54):
With, Probably like a windmill verse windmill, things of simple stuff.
I don't got too much bounce.

Speaker 2 (21:00):
Who would win the dunk contest if it was just
a Delaware players probably know I was gonna say the
money's on, the money's you would be the rising Stars
MVP though we know that, uh coming in? Who is
your favorite NBA All Star NBA player growing up? Lebronn
Was there a disappointment on Sunday when you had a
couple of minutes for the game found out he wasn't
gonna go.

Speaker 10 (21:20):
I think everyone was disappointed. No one knew that wasn't
something he said before it was gonna happen.

Speaker 2 (21:24):
So yet, but we're in the same camp Lebron as
the goat. Yeah, there we go, Lebron. Yeah, it's a
long Jevinty, all right, you're I know they're changing things
up talking about All Star weekend, different format this year
and so trying different things. How about this your commissioner
of Basketball for a day. Is there a rule that
you would add or take away? Is there anything about
the game that you would change if you were king
for the day of basketball. Maybe no soft fouls, no

(21:50):
touch fowls. Right, yeah, there we go, all right, we
like there were plenty of touch fowls. I think that
went against us on Saturday at the Bob. And then
another question. Number you like the number four?

Speaker 6 (22:01):
Right?

Speaker 2 (22:01):
That's that's every day we're gonna swap with when whenever
Niles it goes or you feeling number one.

Speaker 10 (22:05):
I know I'm trying to sign me And my mom
had that conversation all the time, said I go back,
what should.

Speaker 3 (22:09):
I Why four?

Speaker 2 (22:09):
Where did that come from?

Speaker 10 (22:12):
When I was younger, I had an idol, Jalen Green
Houston Rocket number four. I loved him in high school
and that's watch how to model my game after when
I was younger, so I always were number four. And
then as I started to grow in high school and
get a little bit of buzz, I just took.

Speaker 2 (22:25):
Before Jalen's like twenty two years old. So to hear
someone say when I grew up when I was growing up,
Jalen greed pretty well. Uh, And then give give us
our ler listeners a reason they need to come to
Bob Carpenters there two more home games the left Drexel
Hofster coming up, watching the fans coming in and come
watch play this week. Last two home games.

Speaker 6 (22:42):
You gotta win. Yeah, that's the biggest thing. We're gonna win. Absolute,
We're gonna get it done to. I love it.

Speaker 2 (22:46):
Isaiah Pasha, you've been fantastic. Watch. Thanks so much for
coming on the show five times. A Rookie of the Week.

As you are listening to the Blue Hens Basketball Coaches
Show on ninety four to seven w DSD FM, Fox
Sports twelve ninety and the iHeartRadio ad preceded by First
Date or the beat X Welcome back in to La
Casa Pasta restaurant in new Ark.

Speaker 2 (24:44):
And welcome back into the Blue Hens basketball coaches shown
by First State or through p X Team A Top
Docs taking care of Delaware from the beach to the
bridge and beyond. Talk with Isaiah Pasha now back with
Martin Engelsby and coach he's on pace. Certainly he's gotta
finish it out strong and make sure that he leaves
the voters no doubt to potentially be another Rookie of
the Year a winner for Delaware. You've had eight seasons

(25:08):
where you've had freshmen on the roster. If Isaiah Pasha
is indeed the Rookie of the Year in the CAAA,
that would be four Rookies of the Year under Martin
engles Be in eight seasons with freshman That does not
include if the old Horton who led all CAA freshmen
and scoring in twenty nineteen. That has not included Andrew Carr,
who was second in conference points per game amongst freshmen
in that kind of strange shortened twenty twenty one campaign.

(25:30):
So with all of that, how have you been so
successful in evaluating talent at the high school level and
knowing that you can bring in impact guys.

Speaker 3 (25:39):
That can play right away.

Speaker 5 (25:40):
Yeah, I mean, I think our coaching staff has done
a great job getting out and identifying players that fit us,
fit our program, fit our culture, fit the University of Delaware,
And I think early on we had a ton of
opportunity for guys.

Speaker 4 (25:51):
To come in and you're giving them a ton of minutes.

Speaker 5 (25:53):
And you know, Isaiah obviously came into a role that
was a big sales pitch for us to be able
to get him to come in and being able to
play from day one and make an impact. And you know,
he earned the starting spot this year and he had competition.
But again it goes back to just identifying, you know,
really good fits for us in the recruiting process, fitting
in need you. Recruiting is all about need and knowing

(26:16):
what you need, knowing what you don't need, to know
you you you can't get, and then not getting.

Speaker 4 (26:22):
Too many guys.

Speaker 5 (26:23):
You know, right, we're not going to recruit another guy
that's similar to him, and know these guys are going
to play and they're gonna get their opportunity and they're
gonna be able to play through mistakes.

Speaker 4 (26:30):
But again, I think we've done a good job.

Speaker 5 (26:32):
And then this new age of college athletics, now you
got to keep them, you know, that's the biggest thing.

Speaker 2 (26:36):
Yeah, we keep well, I know he we know how
much they enjoy playing for you. That that that's for sure.
When when Isaiah and it'll be last on Isaiah. We're
talking Isaiah a bunch. But when you're offered him twenty
twenty two. Yeah, when you guys found out other kids
back open where you guys, big smiles across your faces.

Speaker 5 (26:53):
Yeah, it was like third times of charm and recruit
him out of high school. He went to the same
high school as my dad, so it was very familiar
with him, and he thought he'd be a great fit
for us US and then he you know, committed Diona
and then he decommitted. We tried to get him again
and then he went to Saint Tommy Moore and it's
amazing how he came back around to us for calling
Bill one Sunday morning and hey, I just got a
call from Isaiah and his guys and they're interested in

(27:13):
coming back to Delaware. I was like, hey, man, we'll
take him. Let's get this done in a hartpeat, you know. So,
but again he fits us. You know, he's got such
a bright future ahead of him, and you know, just
want him to continue to you know, be coachable, learn
he's a student of the game, he watches a ton
of tape, and again we need him to continue to
lead us down the stretch.

Speaker 2 (27:30):
Well, third times. The charm getting Isaiah second time is
going to be the charm with a couple of teams
that are coming to Bob Carpenter Center this week. It's
a big week fighting for really just to stay out
of the Friday as we continue on in the season,
not necessarily want to be in, but it's gonna it's
a fight nonetheless. And so you got teams that are
all trying to get into a Saturday start in the CAAA,

(27:51):
They're all going to be hungry. Drexel second half they
outscored Delaware by ten, end up winning by thirteen. Up
in Philadelphia, Yeah, played out a point guard in that game.
Isaiah was out. Trent Middleton did not play either in
that game. I think that alone has got to be
a major difference in terms of the factor as the Dragons.

Speaker 4 (28:08):
Came Yeah, hope. So you know, we need.

Speaker 5 (28:10):
We put a lot of pressure on Cavin and Niles
that night to be able to handle the basketball, and
we were right in that game and didn't get it
done obviously, but this is an important one for us
and being ready to go on Thursday night, and you
know we've had great fans support. The crowd on Saturday
was awesome. We need that back in there Thursday nights
and you'd be awesome. But be able to get one
and get a little confidence as we head into too

(28:30):
Saturday and the last weekend of a conference play.

Speaker 4 (28:32):
It could give us a lot of a lot of
good positive.

Speaker 5 (28:34):
Juice as we as we finish this thing and get
ready for the CAA Tournament. But one game at a time,
we're just trying to get to have a good day
of practice tomorrow and get the one and zer on
Thursday against the Dragons.

Speaker 2 (28:43):
I know, one game at a time. The focus is
Drexel on Thursday. Hofstra does come on Saturday as well.
I know focuses on Drexel, but obviously just didn't have
it up in Hempstead earlier in this season. Your thoughts
on them coming back to town.

Speaker 5 (28:56):
Yeah, we played it really poor second half and they
shot the lights out, and again that happens.

Speaker 4 (29:01):
We had to flush that.

Speaker 5 (29:02):
One and turn back around and be ready to go
against Drexel. But again, I hopefully we can get this
one Thursday and remind our guys on Fridays our preparation
that they kicked their butts and we got to be
able to pay them back on our building.

Speaker 4 (29:13):
They're a good basketball team.

Speaker 5 (29:14):
They've been a little nicked up and dinged a little
bit in CIA play, so it's gonna be a heck.

Speaker 4 (29:19):
Of a battle. But hopefully we can be one and
oher heading into that one Saturday.

Speaker 2 (29:23):
Well, it'll help to get to one. And oh if
a great crowd appears again on a Thursday, and I
know you want all the fans out there at the Bob,
last chance to see you guys play at home this week.

Speaker 4 (29:32):
Yeah, it's senior night for Niles and Tehron and Eric.

Speaker 5 (29:35):
Timco right to thank those guys for everything they've done
for our program.

Speaker 4 (29:38):
Four pm tip.

Speaker 5 (29:39):
It would be a great way to finish our homestand
to be able to get to this weekend.

Speaker 2 (29:42):
That would be fantastic. So we're looking forward to a
coach Alway appreciate you coming on the show, and we'll
talk to you before Drexel.

Speaker 4 (29:47):
All right, thanks Gott, Thanks Gott.

Speaker 2 (29:48):

New York, and welcome back Blue Hens Basketball Coaches Show.
As we switch over to the women's basketball side, I'm
Matt Janis, joined now by the head coach of the Hens,
Sarah Jenkins, Coach. The last couple of months, we've been
coming here every other week. I've been racking my brain
trying to think of things to ask you keep you
in a positive mind space, but you are all smiles

(32:37):
today and deservedly so. Five consecutive wins. How does it
feel to come in and be one of the hottest
teams in the CIA?

Speaker 12 (32:44):
I mean, I'm just really happy. This is really it's
a really great day. It's a good day to be
a Blue hen. It's a good day to be the
University of Delaware women's basketball coach. I am the coach there.

Speaker 3 (32:57):
You know, I have very much aware We've been thinking
about ways to get this thing turned around, and I
guess I want to go back to January the thirty first.
You're gonna accuse me of being negative, but I've got
a point that I'm gonna make. Here. You guys are
on the road at Towson and it just did not
go well. You're up by thirteen in the second quarter.
They just dominate the glass in the second half.

Speaker 12 (33:19):
What you like, what are you trying to I just
I mean, I came in here, I'm smiling. Then't you
want to go back to January thirty first? Today is February.

Speaker 3 (33:28):
That was the next point as we turned the page.
Keep very next day, on February the first, you take
a flight up to Boston, Massachusetts. I don't know if
you ever saw that show Lost back in the day
where it's a great show.

Speaker 12 (33:39):
I've watched every episode.

Speaker 3 (33:40):
Well, they went on that plane and something weird happened,
and that's kind of how I feel like it is
for the Delaware women's basketball program. But in the best
way possible. How did you guys stay on track and
get things turned around? Because that was about as tough
as spot as you could imagine. They're losing that game
to Towson, turning around and having to take a flight
the very next day, quick turn around to play that

(34:01):
Northeastern team, and that's where the winning streak starts. What
happened there and what has kind of flipped the script
for this group.

Speaker 12 (34:07):
There is some winning juice. You can buy that CVS.
And so you go, you go to CVS. Look, I
gotta you gotta keep you gotta search its way in
the back and on the shelf way in the back. Now,
I you know something. It's just a matter of like,
losing is hard, right, and so when when teams and

(34:30):
they constantly lose, like you just get in a run,
you know, and it takes you seeing yourself get over
the hump to like believe, oh, like I can do it.
Like I can finish this game, we can win this game,
we can make this shot. And you know, Northeastern was
one of those moments where you know, we saw ourselves

(34:50):
get over the hump, and you know, and we kept
just having moments where they had opportunities where they could
have caved in and they could have failed or quit
and giving up, and they didn't. Then they saw themselves
not doing and I think that's just been a big
piece of it.

Speaker 4 (35:06):
You know.

Speaker 12 (35:06):
And every day they come in, I mean, they really
pushed my last nerves most days, you know, most days
they pushed my last nerve. But every day, you know,
and this is the credit I got to give these
kids because every day they come into work every day,
you know, and it's very easy for teams when you
go through losing streaks like we've had to quit and

(35:28):
to give up, and they never give up. They come
in every day ready to work and give their best
and work to get better. So you know, I'm really
glad to see it pay off for them. I'm really
glad to see it pay off for myself.

Speaker 3 (35:44):
I had a feeling that you're go in that direction.
One of the buzzwords you hear talk about all the
time is culture, and sometimes it can get overused, especially
in college sports, because it is kind of an intangible thing.
It's tough to measure, but it is one of your
special ingredients that you've been able to use over the years.
And despite adversity, you talked about, you know, jokingly, the

(36:07):
kids getting on your last nerve. I know you're gonna
say you're not joking, but you say that with your
tongue thermly planted in cheek. But you do find a
way to make it fun even when things are tough.
And is that part of the reason why maybe this
team was able to keep taking steps forward and just
keep working and trusting that it eventually would happen that

(36:28):
that family type feel. Yeah.

Speaker 12 (36:29):
Absolutely, And at the end of the day, you know,
we work really hard, my staff and I to just
it's about people and building genuine relationships with people, and
that's just life and how you deal and manage with
people and treat people good situations and bad situations and
ups and downs. It is just the life skill. And
I really work hard to teach them the value and

(36:51):
importance of just building genuine relationships with each other and people.
And so you know, we really worked hard to hold
them accountable, but to make sure that they knew that
we loved them even when they failed and they made
mistakes and they messed up. We still love them and
we still care about them, and we know they can
be better, and we know they can do better and
step and keep coaching them as such. And I think

(37:11):
that has kind of encouraged them to keep going. Cause
I mean, I'm really proud of like every game, Like
I have to take a deep breath because I'm like, dang,
we want another one. This is unbelievable.

Speaker 3 (37:20):
Yeah, you're gonna have to take your shoes and socks
off it, keep this winning streak, going to track out
it up.

Speaker 12 (37:24):
It's hunbelievable.

Speaker 20 (37:25):
I am.

Speaker 12 (37:26):
I mean, I'm just I am. I am ecstatic because
we needed it right and we've just had such a
long it's been a long year for our kids, you know.
And I don't think we've had a game where we've
had more than eight people dressed ready to play, like
for only they have eight bodies and walk on and
so for them to just see themselves have success, and
it's like I keep telling people, these are life lessons

(37:46):
we're teaching these kids, Like This is so much bigger
than basketball, and it's them learning life skills and how
to manage and deal with adversity. And that's that's the
thing that we've got to you know, I want them
to learn from this, so ten years down the road,
you know, they'll remember this moment, in these moments when
we overcame some really tough stuff and they know they
can do it and they know they can succeed.

Speaker 3 (38:05):
I have a feeling you're not going to let them
forget it. You're up to a four way tie for
eighth now as a result of these five consecutive wins.
Ten obviously is the magic number. If you get to
the top ten, you can avoid that opening day in
the CIA. But obviously for this team, it's been about
the process and a big part of it you mentioned
the numbers. Eight has been kind of your high water

(38:25):
mark in terms of scholarship players available. You've been playing
without a true point guard most of the year. Now,
all of a sudden, you have Sidney Boone back, which
is a big deal because that's a true point guard
who's played the position in her entire career. And we
heard Isaiah talk about how tough that can be to
to kind of adjust into on the fly. But then also,
Tara Cousins looks like a real point guard all of
a sudden. I don't know if we can say, I

(38:46):
don't play at a position anymore.

Speaker 12 (38:48):
I don't know, looks like a bwing guard.

Speaker 3 (38:50):
I mean they sing her sister turnover numbers.

Speaker 12 (38:53):
Now she's actually been really good. I am really proud
of her, but don't say it, like while she's around.

Speaker 3 (38:58):
I'm not allowed to build their confidence.

Speaker 12 (39:00):
Oh yeah, I think you have.

Speaker 3 (39:01):
You've seen her shoot the basketball.

Speaker 2 (39:03):
Yeah, she's playing.

Speaker 12 (39:04):
Yeah, she's really she's playing out of her mind. I'm
actually really proud of her, But don't tell her.

Speaker 3 (39:08):
I said that, all right, Well, as a radio show,
we got to talk about something. So how about Citney
boot and what she's been able to do coming back
into the fold and hit the ground running, Because that's
a kid that's still so much less than one hundred percent,
and yet she's finding a way to make things happen.

Speaker 12 (39:23):
She is, and I think just having another ball handle
on the floor, Like I said, you know, we've done
some things offensively and tweak some systems and to try
to help alleviate some of the pressure of just not
having a true ball handle on the floor. So anytime
we can get her in any capacity because she's comfortable,
it works. And so I'm really happy that she's back
on the floor. Hopefully we can keep her keep her

(39:44):
on here. We got five more regular season games, and
my goal is everybody knock on well, we can keep
these eight kids healthy and keep them ready to go
and we don't have any more hiccups down the line.

Speaker 3 (39:54):
Well, the other thing that has helped cut down the
turnover numbers, says been your bigs and their ability to
handle the ball. I did assure easy, who is the
reigning CAA Player of the Week we were gonna talk
to in a moment. It is a big part of that.
Your big Chloe Wilson and and Dia and Michelle Ojoe
and she's out there as well. They really do a
nice job of showing off the guard like skills. I
know sometimes you think they're a little too guard like

(40:15):
from time to time.

Speaker 12 (40:15):
But yeah, the other day she acted like a between
the legs step back and I'm like, what in the
world is she doing? Did you see that? I did
ask her about that. When she comes up here, like
she literally did a between the legs, step back, and
I'm like, you're not a guard.

Speaker 3 (40:28):
She did look for her three point shot right away
in the game.

Speaker 12 (40:31):
She was feeling. No, they are and they're getting better.
You know, if I could just get them to make layups,
we would be in the business. I mean, because I
think we had to miss nine hundred and fifty two
layups on Sunday. So if I can get them to
make some layups, then we'll really well, we'll really be
cooking with fish grease.

Speaker 3 (40:47):
Is that why Danigels is here? She a layup coaches.
She's the layup coach, you're one of your best.

Speaker 12 (40:52):
She's the layup police action.

Speaker 3 (40:54):
She's the layup you described. She's one of your best
friends do and kind of the glue behind that staff
that you talk about all the time.

Speaker 12 (40:59):
She she actually is in charge.

Speaker 10 (41:01):
It's not me.

Speaker 12 (41:02):
I just sit there.

Speaker 3 (41:03):
She's certainly logistics, There's no doubt about it. And I
don't think you would ever show up point and on
time to anything in your entire life if it wasn't
for Tony.

Speaker 12 (41:10):
No, I wasn't even on time to this radio show today.

Speaker 3 (41:13):
Have you been on time to this radio show at
any point in your three years or no.

Speaker 12 (41:18):
All right, I'm going to be on time on the
last one. I'm gonna be on time.

Speaker 3 (41:21):
Yeah, the two weeks after the season ends, that one. Yeah, yeah,
when you show up like you did last year. All right,
we will take a break. We'll hear from at Cherizi
when we return. The raining CIA Player of the Week

As you are listening to the Blue Hen's Basketball Coaches
Show on ninety four to seven w DSD FM, Fox
Sports twelve ninety and the iHeartRadio ad presented by First
Daid or The Beat X. Welcome back into La Cosa
Pasta restaurant in New York, Ed.

Speaker 3 (43:21):
Welcome back to Hen's Basketball Coaches Show. Our second segment
talking women's basketball, we are joined now by the CAAA
Player of the Week. How good does that sound? On
d Shreizier is joining us. Thanks so much for being here, Shaq,
Thank you for having me. I know public speaking isn't
your favorite thing in the world, so I really appreciate
you making your way out and doing this with us.

(43:43):
It's a great time though, to talk to. I mean,
how big does a basket look for you? Right now?
We talked to Sarah Jenkins at that first segment. You're
starting to expand the range. You shot a couple of
threes over the course of the weekend. You're knocking down
sixteen seventeen footers to go along with your inside game.
You gotta feel a lot of confidence right now. Offensively,
I mean.

Speaker 20 (44:02):
We work really, really, really hard in practice for me
to make my layups. I do average, you know, one
over the back, over the backboards shot a game, but
majority of the times, like I'm making my layups, I
take one crazy shot of game. I took a three
in the corner. I thought, you know, I thought I

(44:22):
was open, so I shot it. But I just have
a really good confidence I'm in a good place right now,
so it's feeding onto my game.

Speaker 3 (44:30):
I am as intimidated by Sarah Jenkins as you are,
so I got to follow the rules as well. And
she said, I got to ask you what was going
through your mind when you tried to step back off
the bounce. I thought the move was great, you pulled
the string when you went through the legs, But what
were what was the thought process when you let the
shot fly.

Speaker 20 (44:46):
I was just trying to make the big girl move
her feet, you know.

Speaker 3 (44:50):
So there was a plan and it was part of
you were playing chests while everybody else was playing checkers, right.

Speaker 20 (44:54):
Yeah, yeah, I'll make it next time.

Speaker 3 (44:56):
That's what I like to hear. So you are somebody
that was in there more season. You were an All
rookie selection in the CIA a year ago. You really
came on down the stretch. I think you were in
double figures eight of your last eleven games last year.
Did that help your confidence coming into this season and
where do you think you've improved your game the most
this year?

Speaker 20 (45:16):
Well, I think in the beginning of the season I
was on a little rock I was a little rocky,
but I just kept working every day with Coach d
and Coach Breezy, and you know it's helping me today.
I'm scoring twenty game now, my average went up, price
went up.

Speaker 3 (45:34):
You know, well, certainly you are looking good offensively. You
mentioned those twenty per game that you averaged this past weekend.
Twenty one tied your career high on Friday. So then
you go out and you set a new career high
with twenty four in the win on Sunday. And you know,
Denney Daniels was talking to her this week and she's
been practicing a lot because we're down numbers in practice,

(45:57):
and she says she deserves a lot of the credit
for your recent offensive success because you guys are going
to war every single day in practice. What's it like
going up against a legend in her own mind tonight?

Speaker 20 (46:08):
Guys, she'd be bullying me. But she makes me so like,
so much better every day, teaching me how to move
my feet. You know, she helps me. She gonna follow me,
make sure I get all end ones. You know, she
just gonna make me better every day. I appreciate you.

Speaker 3 (46:25):
She's been getting extra treatment from Mel Johnson, the athletic trainer,
because she said she's been found you without the paths
and trying to get you to finish on those end ones.
But when you have kind of a special connection with
today and with you mentioned pre Hutchins, who you have
known for a long time and who you have that
Baltimore connection with. What's it mean to connect with your
coaches the way you have.

Speaker 20 (46:46):
It's a great feeling. And I know that they gonna
hold me accountable and make me the best version of myself.
I mean, I know Coach Breezy for a really long time.
I call her like my second mom, and then I
call d Auntie. You know, it's like a big family.
You know Cosetta. She thinks she'd have like aunties, a
law or something.

Speaker 4 (47:09):
In law.

Speaker 3 (47:09):
It's a good way to describe it, no doubt about that,
dn't they? What's the best old Lady move that she's
added to your repertoire of basketball so far?

Speaker 20 (47:22):
All of them?

Speaker 3 (47:24):
Well, you're giving her way too much credity.

Speaker 20 (47:26):
This is this is too hard. Yeah it is my
step dude, my step through is Yeah, that's part of
my game now.

Speaker 3 (47:33):
That is a big part of the game. What how
long did it take to develop that move?

Speaker 23 (47:38):
WHOA?

Speaker 20 (47:39):
I mean, like a few practices. You know, I had
to practice sometime to get used to it, and then
I started killing in practice with it, so you know
I do in the game.

Speaker 3 (47:48):
Who do you go toe to toe with outside of
the day and practice the practice players or is it somebody?
Are you going up against Chloe at all in practice?

Speaker 16 (47:56):
No?

Speaker 20 (47:56):
Me and Chloe really never match up. I'll say probably
O Joe or Wyatt our manager Wyatt.

Speaker 3 (48:05):
You know he'll tell you that he's probably the best
player on the team.

Speaker 20 (48:08):
Yeah, I mean, he can knock it down, but you
know I'm gonna put him on the basket.

Speaker 3 (48:13):
I love the confidence and that's why you are winning
Player of the Week the way you did this past week.
And in your mind, what has been the biggest key
to this team getting things turned around? You mentioned a
little rocky for you there for a stretch in December
and into early January. You're probably the embodiment of how
this team things have clicked for them. What in your

(48:34):
mind has been the biggest key of the team success
here the last few.

Speaker 20 (48:36):
Weeks practice and we've been practicing how to finish games
a lot, especially like in the second half. We've been
having a great first half, kind of start, but maybe
the second half that'd be a little rocky. So we've
been working on that for the past few weeks. And
then we also know as a team that more than

(48:56):
three four people has to have double figures for us
to win. So you got to realize I got to
step up.

Speaker 3 (49:02):
Wow, you do listen to Sarah Jack and she said
that exact same thing pretty much on a daily basis.
So you're in her brain, which is a scary place
to be. Speaking of your brain, you have some breaking
news today, a new major you selected today, Right, you've
switched things up.

Speaker 20 (49:19):
Yeah, I'm gonna do human resources. I think it's gonna
be good to help others, and then I'm gonna mind
he sports management, you know, just trying some stuff, trying
to stay in sports.

Speaker 3 (49:31):
What was it about human resources that dream? Because I
gotta be honest with you. I mean, the only thing
I know about human resources is when I've had to
meet with them, which is never all that much fun.
Or told me from the office. That's really all I
know about human resources.

Speaker 20 (49:43):
Well, I know the money's great like that.

Speaker 3 (49:48):
That's smart. Yeah, did anybody did you talk to anybody
that it is in the major before you picked.

Speaker 20 (49:53):
It my aunt. She does that right now, and she
says she makes a lot of money and she's only
like twenty.

Speaker 4 (50:00):
So wow.

Speaker 3 (50:00):
Yeah, all right, that's a good path to go. I
think you have chosen wisely. Now as you look towards
hitting the road this week. You guys have had so
much success at home. What's the key? You think they're
taking it away from the friendly confines of the Bob Gartner, etc.
What's it like going on a road trip with this program.

Speaker 20 (50:18):
Well, I mean, we just got to hit first, don't
get punched first. You guys just gotta hit first. And
I think we can be I know we can be
both teams, and we just got to work together, play hard,
listen to what she's saying and all the other coaches
because sometimes you know, we get a little off you
don't listen. But we're gonna listen to her so we

(50:40):
can win. Make her put a smile on her face.

Speaker 3 (50:43):
Have you noticed her demeanor change here these last couple
of weeks as the winds have started to come.

Speaker 20 (50:48):
Yeah, two days off?

Speaker 3 (50:54):
How many days off did you get the first twelve
weeks of the season.

Speaker 20 (50:58):
Not so many, maybe about one day?

Speaker 3 (51:01):
You know, Well, it's it's good to earn those days off.
And winners get dessert, right loud of dessert lately.

Speaker 20 (51:08):
Yeah, we get a lot. I just feel like, wait,
I'm sorry, sick.

Speaker 3 (51:15):
No, no, don't worries. I know. One of the traditions,
especially on the road, when you get a win, winners
get dessert. You're one of the first persons off the
bus to make sure you get in line and get
that you gotta go to dessert that you'd like to pick.

Speaker 20 (51:29):
No, I'm not really a sweet person. I like my
Caesar salads. They can tell you that.

Speaker 3 (51:34):
Now you're just sucking up to the coaches. So we're
gonna we're gonna call it a segment. Aye assures ya.
Thank you so much for taking the time on this
Monday night to jordan us. Thank you all right, that's
Auntie sure easy. When we return, we'll be joined again
by Sarah Jenkins's A Blots Basketball Coaches Show from La Kasapa.

Speaker 16 (51:53):

You are listening to the Blue Hens Basketball Coaches Show
on ninety four to seven WDSDFM, Fox Sport twelve ninety
and the iHeartRadio ad Precent at My First Daid or
the beat X, Welcome Back into La Cosa pasta restaurant
in New York, and.

Speaker 3 (54:08):
Welcome Back final segment of the Blue Men's Basketball Coaches Show.
A mad janis joined again by the head coach of
the Hens Sarah Jenkins coach. It sounds like you have
a very attentive audience in Onia. Sure easy. He she
was giving you back a lot of the lines that
I've heard you say it practice many many times.

Speaker 12 (54:25):
I'm impressed because I don't sometimes I don't really listen.
She said that, though she admitted that they don't listen
to what we say.

Speaker 3 (54:32):
You better keep winning it. There might be a couple
times on the line for there we go for sure?

Speaker 20 (54:36):
For sure?

Speaker 3 (54:37):
What how about as you look at the moments from
this five game winning there have been a lot I've
been calling the games. I was doing the math, which
is always a scary thing when I try to do it.
For a long time. Now, nine was my first year
working with a women's basketball program, and for the first
time in that stretch, a walk on scored a basket

(54:58):
during a game on Sunday after and you guys were
able to get a big enough lead over William and
mary Leah Samuels, who wasn't even on the team at
the beginning of the season, has joined in mid stride.
She's picked up everything so fast, such a good kid.
You decided to give her an opportunity and talk about
making the most of an opportunity. How cool was that

(55:18):
it was?

Speaker 12 (55:18):
That was the best part of my day, you know.
And again, I can't reiterate enough just the joy that
I get from just seeing people happy, you know. And
this kid is fulfilling the dream. She helped us out
because we needed a body, you know, we didn't have
any healthy bodies, and she jumped in and joined the team,
and you know, to see the joy and the look

(55:40):
on her face, like it was like a minute and
a half left, and she'd been sitting there the whole game.
And I looked at her and I'm like, you want
to go in? And She's like, hell, yeah, I want.

Speaker 3 (55:48):
To go in, you know.

Speaker 12 (55:50):
So I put her in, and and and again I
just I love this group, you know, and I think that,
you know, a big part of our success is just
that the call sure and how much these kids genuinely
love each other. And when I put her in with
that lab minute and a half, every single kid on
the bench their face lit up. Everybody on the floor

(56:10):
their face lit up, and they went out of the
way to pass her the ball.

Speaker 3 (56:15):
And then Shack.

Speaker 12 (56:16):
She doesn't screen anybody. She set the best screen for
her to get that shot off and then Leah just
shot it and it went in on that didn't even
hit the front, and it was just like that just
like signified that for us, and it was just such
an incredible moment for her, for our team, for our program,

(56:40):
and guys, I couldn't be happier. Like I am so
happy right now. I'm not even asking anybody to buy
me any beers today.

Speaker 3 (56:49):
Well, I'm sure you'll figure out a way to fix
that into the repertoire before the night ends. But you
mentioned Leah and making that hut. Now, she will be
quick to point out that was not her first career
collegiate basket because she, as she said, won a conference
championship when she was at Wider University D three. You
asked her if they had conferences I remember, which I

(57:11):
did not think was.

Speaker 12 (57:12):
A very nice I did, But this is the funniest thing.
So we were talking to we have a group chat,
and we're talking about it in the group chat, and
her response was, yeah, I think I'm probably going to
go to the WNBA.

Speaker 3 (57:23):
I wonder where she got that line from, again parroting
back her head coach.

Speaker 12 (57:27):
It's unbelievable, unbelievable. Moment, but I am. I'm incredibly proud
of our group, and you know, we celebrate yesterday. But
we're on to the next thing. So this weekend, we've
got two more games and tough games. Winning on the
road is hard.

Speaker 3 (57:38):
And we're going to talk to do that. Well, one
more thing on the pace, you always say, I go
to the negative. One more thing on the positive. You
you mentioned the celebration, the exuberance from all the staff
and the coaches and the players over there on the sideline.
I was watching the footage. Every person inside the program
stood up, jumped, left their feet except for walk. What's

(57:59):
up with Bachelor, your new assistant coach. He didn't even
move off the bench when they made that shot.

Speaker 12 (58:04):
Badnees.

Speaker 3 (58:06):
I'm just gonna know that was your excuse.

Speaker 12 (58:08):
He's got them too, I think.

Speaker 3 (58:10):
Is that prerequisite to be on the coaching staff. Yes,
you cannot, because Denay has been complaining about it too.

Speaker 12 (58:14):
With all that, you cannot be on our staff if
you don't have bad neees. You have to have a
bad you have to have bad knees or bad back.

Speaker 3 (58:23):
So just an arthritic type of a situation. Yes, all right,
Well we learned something new every single time. You've been
playing through pain all yr long and I feel that
pain though right now? Are you with the way things
are going? And you mentioned the road trip this weekend,
you got some unfinished business with Elon That was probably
of all the losses earlier in the season, the most painful.

(58:43):
You guys came storming back. We're in position to get
that game to overtime. Tara Cousins, who was on fire
during the comeback, had not won but two looks and
just couldn't find a way to get it to go
in and out both times. What do you learn from
that game and what do you got for them this weekend?

Speaker 12 (58:59):
You know? Again, just keep keep working, keep our head
down and keep working. And again, our focuses us, you know,
And that's what it's been the whole time, is focusing
on us and how we can get better and how
we can put ourselves in a position to best compete
to win a championship, because we still believe in our
locker room that we can win the CAA championship and
that's what we're working towards every day. And so just
focusing on us and and us getting better and doing

(59:22):
the things that we need to do at the best
level possible.

Speaker 3 (59:25):
You won the root over with that that line. They
like that, right, They're trying to win those champions.

Speaker 12 (59:29):
We're gonna try and I feel really confident saying it
right now.

Speaker 3 (59:33):
Well, we'll check back in a couple of weeks. Coach,
appreciate it. Thank you, Sarah Jenkins of the University of
Delaware Women's Basketball of the Football Our thanks to Scott Klasking,
Isaiah Pasha goles Be on the Assuriz Yeah, and of
course Sarah Jenkins. I'm mad Jannis. Men are in action,
