(00:26):
Basketball Coaches Show We've done by FirstState Orthopedics here on ninety four to seven
at w DSDFM and iHeartRadio. Tonight, we are alive from the Casa Pasta
Restaurant in Newark. I'm Scott Klasskin. Tonight, we'll hear from coaches as
well as players from each squad. From the women's team, Sarah Jenkins is
here or will be here, alongwith a winner of CAAA Rookie of the

(00:47):
Week this season on Dia Sharizia Matt. I think I nailed that first of
all, and Matt was helping meout. He's coaching me up. They
call her Shack. She'll be hereas well. On the men's side,
we'll hear from the team's leader andassists and block shots, Jalen Trent,
as well as his head coach,Martin Inglesby. But first, please welcome
back to the show associate head coachin his eighth season at Delaware, Bill

(01:07):
Phillips is here to get us started. Bill. Thank you. You've been
on the show plenty of times.Thank you so much for rejoining this evening.
No, I appreciate you having meback. Yeah, I must not
have messed it up too much lasttime. That's right, you were invited
back onto the show, and we'reglad that you here because we've got a
lot of good things to talk about. This basketball team is winning games at
the right time of year heading intoto March, and I wanted to start

(01:30):
with the win against North Carolina Aand T sixty two fifty four. If
I'm being honest, I've got toask you about the game because at my
angle, I couldn't see a lotof what was going on. I don't
know if people were understanding of wherewe sit at North Carolina A and T.
But it's way up there in anobstructed view for sure. But you
know, you go down North Carolinatough one on Thursday night that we'll get

(01:51):
to against Elon and what was themindset of the team heading into Saturday afternoon.
I mean, I think, kindof like you, it wasn't your
favorite setting, and maybe it wasa little ugly, but we we kind
of pushed through and got it doneand got the W and that's obviously the
most important part. Absolutely. Andthen take me into a little bit of
the locker room because the defense, and we'll get into defense was strong from

(02:13):
the start, but twenty three pointsin the first half, it was the
lowest scoring half of the season forDelaware, and then in the second half
things seemed to start clicking. Sotake me to that that locker room setting
at the half. Yeah, Imean, I think part of that was
was us not playing up to ourpotential, and part of that was them
slowing the game down and trying tomake it ugly and knowing that they kind
of had to do that to tryand beat us. To be honest,

(02:36):
I think, you know, startingwith Martin, I think everybody in the
locker room was as they normally are, Like we were calm. Obviously we
had to pick it up, butno panic in the locker room. Everybody
was on board and they got itdone together in the second half. Yeah.
It didn't feel at any point like, oh, it was just like
we got to figure this one out. It seemed like and you've done that
before. This team has come frombehind before, and I think with this

(02:57):
veteran group, this team has beenable to panic and continue to finish game
strong as you did against North Carolinaand T. I want to talk to
you about defense. Are you likethe defensive coordinators that we call You're the
Mani Rojas of the team when thedefense is doing well. Yes, yes,
absolutely. I went after an eightypoint game. I wouldn't have even
had John on the show here, but the defense in the second half.

(03:21):
Looking at how it broke down fromabout seventeen minutes and thirty seconds left in
the game to about twelve to thirtyleft in the game a five minute span,
if you will, guys are tradingbaskets. A and T shot six
of seven from the field. Theyscored fourteen points in that five minute span.
In the other five minutes of thesecond half, A and T shot
three of twenty two, and oneof them was with twenty one seconds left,

(03:43):
when the game was already decided forthe most part, I thought Jalen
Trent, our guest on the showtonight, led the charge. I loved
his energy on defense. He madesome big plays on offense as well.
But tell me about what you sawfrom Jalen Trent in that second half.
I think you used the right wordenergy. I think when he brings that
energy and he can really be apest up there guarding the other team's point

(04:04):
guard and picking up and turning them, and he just kind of sets the
tone for the rest of the teamout there. So, like I said,
his energy was tremendous. We kindof fed off of that. He
made some plays, forced their pointguard into some bad shots, got some
I think a block or two, which is unbelievable that he's our leading shot.
I'm not sure that it's not evenclose. I mean, he's got

(04:27):
quite the elite, but yeah,no huge impact from him, and I
think he's a player that when hebrings that energy on the defensive end,
now it helps, you know, fuel him creatively on the offensive end as
well. Quite the entrance to Ithink he was around the corner. He
wanted to wait until we were talkingto him. But Jalen Trent here is
ever here everybody, it's get upfor Jalen. Trent doing a great job
and certainly on Saturday, looking forwardto talking with it. Jalen. Now,

(04:49):
now, before the Saturday game,of course, we went to the
shar Center against an Elon team thatpicks up a win against first place U
n c W two days later,So obviously they were playing really good basketball.
But in that one of seventy threesixty seven loss to the Phoenix,
sixteen turnovers was a season high fortytwo percent from the free throw line,
a season low. What did youlearn? What do you guys take away

(05:10):
from that one? Yeah, andprobably on the other side of the ball,
not as sharp as we have beendefensively, so just maybe a little
underperforming on both ends. I thinkwhat we learned is what we showed on
Saturday, right, the ability toturn that around, bounce back kind of
put that one behind us again. That started with Martin coming in the locker
room and saying, hey, we'reputting that loss behind us, and we

(05:32):
have to go one and zero onSaturday, to go one on one on
the road trip, and so thatability to bounce back and get the win
was huge, and you're able todo that on Saturday talking with assists coach
Bill Phillips. Here in the openingsegment, we'll hear from Jalen Trent and
also our head coach Martin Inglesby.Let's talk about some of the individual performances
this past week, because you hadsome really standout players. Gerald Drumgell forty

(05:55):
seven points, eight three pointers onthe trip down to North Carolina, scored
fifteen of the first twenty three pointsin the game against the Aggies. He
scored nine of the first twelve pointsversus the Phoenix. And we've talked about
Gerald in multiple ways this season, but kind of walk us through the growth
and from a coaching standpoint, kindof his changing roles on this team from

(06:15):
six man to now primary ball handlerand maybe even coming into this season,
wasn't the most efficient shooter at Albany, and now he's leading the league in
three point field goal percentage and he'sup there in field goal percentage as well.
Yeah, I give him a lotof credit because he's kind of grown
his role, But I give allthese guys a lot of credit because we
have a lot of good players,so everybody probably wants a bigger role than

(06:39):
they even have and they got tokind of sacrifice some of that for the
team for us to win. SoGerald's done a great job and obviously he's
in the groove now and helping uson both ends. Yeah, he's doing
a great job. And I thinkfor players in the transfer portal and guys
that want to come here, likeour players getting better when they come here.
Gerald drum in his career good scoreat Albany, but career thirty five

(07:02):
percent from the field, coming inshooting forty five percent from the field.
This season, he's six in theCIA and field goal percentage. He leads
the CAA in three point field goalpercentage. Really great stuff we're getting from
Gerald. And then another guy whohas just had an incredible career. We've
talked about him a bunch, butthat's Christian Ray. And on Thursday he'll
get two commemorative basketballs for a thousandrebounds and a thousand points. He is

(07:25):
one of only two active players inthe country under six foot seven that have
a thousand career rebounds and a thousandpoints. He is one of twelve overall,
and that group includes Zach Edi,Hunter Dickinson, Armando Baycott. Some
names that our listeners would recognize. You know, at Leasale averaged between four
and seven points per game, maybefive and seven rebounds per game. Now

(07:46):
he's close to a double double hereat Delaware. So you knew you were
getting a leader. You knew we'rea guy and a guy that could play
hard for you guys. How hashe even maybe even exceeded expectations at Delaware?
Yeah, I mean you talk aboutthe the A thousand points, thousand
rebounds is an unbelievable achievement. Andhe's probably the guy that cares least about
achievements, right, just an ultimateteam guy, just wants to you know,

(08:13):
his goal for his career is toplay in the NCAA tournament, and
we're trying to make that happen forhim and for everybody else this year.
I think, you know, heask like what surprises us about him?
I think his ability to create andpass the ball right, Like, yeah,
what we've talked about. Mar's talkedabout letting him push the ball right,
he rebounds, he's pushing the fastbreak finding guys. His assistant turnover

(08:37):
ratio is tremendous. So probably thatability I don't think was showcased at LaSalle
And that's one in his skill development, but then also you know, mar
giving him the ability to kind ofexpress that as well. He does a
lot of great things on the court, but maybe more impressed with what he's
doing off the court. We've talkedabout that a little bit throughout this season,

(08:58):
But I want to give you somefor when you were in school at
Saint Joe's, you had a threepoint nine GPA. As a grad student
at Saint jose you were a twotime Atlantic ten Student Athlete of the Year,
which is a really impressive stuff. You know, because of what you
did in school and how well youdid in the classroom, does it give
you kind of a higher admiration forwhat Christian Ray is doing in the classroom,

(09:20):
knowing just how how difficult it canbe to do both. Yeah,
And I would say like there's alot of similarities with Christian and I I
think, you know, even personalitywise, he's tough on himself. He's
a perfectionist. I feel like Iwas like that as a student athlete,
and I think I'm trying to gethim to be less like that because I
know that probably would have helped meeven more in college. So yeah,

(09:43):
you know, he's tremendous off andon and off the court. Great kid.
And we've talked on this show andthroughout the years your eight season here
at Delaware about your playing career youplayed overseas. We talked. He told
a great story last year about playingwith the Tony Gonzales and Kron Butler and
the Miami Heat NBA Summer League. So it gets tougher and tougher to find
out information about it. Here's whatI didn't know. Bill Phillips holds the

(10:07):
all time singles season record at SaintJoseph's for three point field goal percentage in
a year. So all this talkabout Derk Novinsky, Karl Anthony Towns,
all these big guys that can shootfrom you were way ahead of the curve.
Those guys made a couple more dollarsthan I with with that ability.
So was it was it rare tohave that? You know? In two

(10:31):
thousand and two, I know,I feel like there weren't a lot of
six ten guys that that had ranged. Were you unique in that way or
when you were at Saint Joseph alittle bit? Yeah, because it wasn't
as prevalent at the time. Youwere also let a team rebounding. I
want to I don't want to saypoint the picture that Bill was having.
I wasn't three point at the threepoint line, yea, And I appreciate
that, but yeah, probably wasn'tas like I said, as prevalent at

(10:52):
that position. And just something thatI worked on with one of the assistants.
When I got to Saint Joe's myfreshman year at William and Mayor,
I think I was zero for twofrom three on the year. And then
that's just something that I developed andthen was given the freedom to do and
and that's how it ended almost almostfifty percent on the season. Really impressive

(11:15):
stuff. No one's all those shootersat Saint Joseph had you still hold the
record. And then of course youwant to an international career. France,
Greece, Spain, Italy and Germany. We're here at this lovely Italian restaurant,
so I'll ask what kind of Italiandish? What's your favorite Italian dish
from your time over there? Everythingis amazing. When they say the food
is good in Italy, they're they'renot lying. So now I had had

(11:37):
two separate years that I played, not back to back, but two years
in Italy and had great times. And I tell people I love coaching,
but there's nothing like playing and gettingpaid to play. It was even better
had you had a heck of acareer overseas, and you've helped a lot
of guys at Delaware continue their careerafter Delaware as well. So we appreciate

(11:58):
you and we appreciate you coming onthe show once again. Bill Phillips.
Everybody, thanks so much. Thankyou. All Right, we'll take a

the show. Give it up forJalen and first time on the show.
But we appreciate you being here andwe certainly appreciate you being in Newark as
the Blue Hent. How have youenjoyed your time so far in Delaware and

(14:28):
in new Ark? Going great?I met a lot of good, great
guys. I met a lot ofgreat coaches who really believe in me and
want to see see me do goodin life. I've been been a beautiful
experience here. Yeah, well,we've had a beautiful experience watching you play,
that is for sure. We appreciateyou being on the team and won
a game on Saturday we were talkingabout as your major entrance, great timely
entrance. Right, we were talkingabout you and I thought you provided such

(14:52):
great energy on defense. You hadfour straight points to get us tied in
the game, and then we gota took a lead with a Gerald drum
Gool layup. And what was yourmindset? Kind of talk with coach about
it, but what was your mindsetheading into the game on Saturday, knowing
that you needed to get a spliton that trip to North Carolina? My
mind set was keep it simple.I had a coach with coach Marian before
the before a game that day, just said, come in the game,

(15:16):
just keep thing simple, take careof the ball, keep my guys going,
just play defense. Well that's whatI did. You're good at listening
to an instructions, it sounds like, because that's exactly what you did.
You had two more block shots againstthe Aggies. You are the only guard
in the CAA with over fifteen blocksin league play. The only guard everybody
ahead of you on the on thelist is a center or power forward.

(15:37):
So give me the keys. What'sit like you're a point guard? What
do you focus on to get allthose blocks? And what do you focus
on in terms of timing your jumpsbecause it's impressive out there. Whyley focus
on just moving my feet, Justtry to guard up with my chest.
Just keep thing simple. Like Isaid, I don'ly know too much.

(15:58):
You did to do a great job. And how was your length maybe benefited
you throughout the years because you're apoint guard. But there's not as many
guys that had the length of thatposition that you have, So how's that
been a benefit to you in yourcareer? Who's benefit? I don't know
how long my wingspin is, butwe'll get that the combine after after you're
you're done here, we'll figure thatout. But I just try to use
my links to mostly possible. Ijust try to guard and you do a

(16:22):
great job of it. As greatas you are as a defender, you
got some great moves on offence aswell. Where'd you develop that baseline spin?
How long you've been doing that thingfor since college? That's your that's
your patent move. This was avideo game, you would press whatever combo
and that would that would be yoursignature move. We love it and we
saw it in that Xavier game.I want to take me back to that
one. A career high end pointsof dominating effort. You led Delaware to

(16:44):
their first ever Big East victory. What's that moment like for you to take
us back to Ohio on that night? Uh, it was a really Saturday
night. I didn't think I hadthat performance. You were a little hurt
coming into that one. I wasmy toe. They say that I had
a like freshen toe. My toecame off my big toe. Wow.
So I was just trying to playthrow and just do the best for my

(17:06):
team. Woll You certainly did thatand Delaware got the victory over Exavir.
Career high for you. Really impressivestuff. And we're talking with Jalen Trent
team leader and assists and blocks.I don't think that's a combination that many
people usually get assist leader and blockleader, but that's we have for you.
So take me through your recruitment here. Because you're you're at Delaware this

(17:26):
season. We're glad to have you. But your career, you mentioned Juco
started in Arizona and then you playedat North Dakota. So what made Delaware
a good landing spot for you?Uh? Of Coseby, when I first
got on the phone with him,he was just a real relaxed dude.
Like always, he just made mefeel like welcome. It was no prayer
pressure. I didn't feel like pressureto come here. I didn't feel pressed

(17:49):
to like do anything, just realrelax and just enjoy myself. Well,
we're glad that you picked up thephone and that Martin did a great job
of getting you here, because youdoing a wonderful job as a blue hem.
But tell me a little bit aboutGrand Forks, North Dakota. That
is where the campus of your formeruniversity is. Because I read that on
average, fifty days every winter atthe low temperature is below zero, and

(18:14):
tonight it is eighteen degrees in GrandForks, North Dakota. I looked it
up. So what is it likebeing in a place that cold. It's
different. Let me tell you thatit's really different. But there's Baltimore cold
and then there's that. Yeah,it do get like nekead degrees out there,
blizzards and you still gotta go topractice. And I was walking to
practice, so but it was itwas fun out there, just very cold.

(18:38):
Just had to adapt to it.Basically. Well, I hope you
live close to the arena. Ifyou were walking in that cold, I
hope you had a nice jacket,or perhaps you had to stay indoors,
maybe having some indoor hobbies like playingchess. Right, you're a big,
big chess guy. I understand youwere on the chess team in sixth grade.
That's when you got involved in playingchess. What do you like about

(18:59):
the game? I like how it'scotecha, like you can just set people
up to your traps. I play, I'll play one of my teams all
the time. O D ME OD play a lot. I know beat
him, yet I'm still talking.You have a beat O D. Yeah,
he's pretty good. He's really good. All right, he's really good.
How how would you describe your talentlevel as a chess player. It's
in sixth grade, you must bepretty good, right, it was okay,

(19:21):
you're okay, Okay, I'm notgonna say it with the best.
I will say I recently learned howto play chess with my six year old
son, and uh, and ifnot to brag or anything, but like
I beat him almost every time.I mean, he can rarely think two
moves ahead. So I don't wantto brag or anything, but uh,
there's a first grader that I'm undefeatedagainst you have I've noticed this season,

(19:42):
I think everyone else that that comesin contact with you such a contagious smile.
I mean when you smile, Imean it lights up this room and
and the court, the arena.Uh Where does that outlook on life come
from? Because you just look likea guy that that's always happy and it
makes those around him happy as well. I get im my dad as you
met him. A quick story. There was a guy at the William and

(20:03):
Mary game and in the William Marysection, so I was thinking, well,
what are the odds, but there'sa guy that looks just like Jalen
Trent. So I walked over andsaid I, by any chance, and
then that we had a conversation. But you guys are twins. I get
it for my dad, just getit from my family, who just always
stay positive, stay upbeat, justnever be down because there's always a lot

(20:23):
of things out here to be downabout. So I just always try to
bring the positives everybody, including myself. So well, you have been able
to do that. And I understandat one point in time, don't know
if you still have this interest, but at one point in time you had
an interest in taking care of otherpeople's smiles because you had I once had
an interest in becoming a dental hygienist. Is that correct? What made you

(20:45):
think about that career path? Iactually did want to be a dentist,
but like my coach at you andcause like there's no way be a dentist
with my little GPA. But butwell, I think, I think.
So you've got a lot of basketballto go in your career. So maybe
after your career, because you've gota lot of basketball to still be played.

(21:06):
Let's wrap it up with with JalenTrent talk some quick questions, some
rapid fire questions for you at theend, as we always do. When
we got back from North Carolina,A and T and the airport, there
was a speaker, there were somedancing going on. You guys were having
a fun time. Who has thebest who has the most rhythm on the
team? Who would you say onthe team has the best? Answer?
Most rhythm? It's MEO, Niles, You were Niles? Okay, all

(21:26):
right, we'll get We'll give youthat one. There is a correct answer
to my next question, Uh,who is the best sneaker game on the
team? Who has the best naguewe're talking in game sneakers. It's got
to be Cray. Yeah. Ifeel like Christian has a new pair of
shoes every every half. I meanI feel like sometimes he changes in the

(21:48):
locker room. He's got so manyI gotta figure out what its connected is.
Because he's got he's got all theAdidas shoes. I think that that's
what I was going for as well. All Star Weekend was this weekend.
Saturday was all the festivity last night, no one was trying in the All
Star Game. Who would win inan All Star event if it was with
the Blue Heads? Who would wina dunk contest? I think that's how

(22:11):
about how about the skills challenge?Who would win a skills challenge? On
this team skills Challenge, I'm gonnago passing. We gotta do shooting,
we gotta dribbling all around. Imyself, Yeah, I think I think
that would be a great pick threepoint contest. Kevin, Okay, you
know what I think. You knowwhat I think. In the in the

(22:33):
way Karl Anthony towns want one year, don't don't sleep on Houser, don't
right think there's multiple guys. Andthen lastly, Jalen All Star Game was
last night. Who do you havea you have a player that you grew
up enjoying or a player now thatyou like, Len James Lebron, great
answer, Great way to the segment, Jalen, thank you so much for

for coming. And and we justspoke with Jalen Trot. I'm a big
fan of Jalen. What a greatpersonality, what a great player to bring
and represent this university. He hadmentioned you spoke on the postgame show after

(25:12):
Saturday's game about you know, havingthat conversation with with Jalen and whatever it
was. It worked. He playedso well on Saturday, But what'd you
guys chat about? I actually toldhim today I practice. I was like,
we're gonna have another chat out onWednesday before the Charleston game. I
just had him into my room onI guess Friday before we went to dinner
and just had a conversation about youknow, his role and trying to you

(25:33):
know, get him back having funplaying basketball and get him confident again.
And you know, he mentioned thewords simplifying things, and I told him,
you know, be a lockdown defender. And again he was fabulous in
the second half against n n CA and T. And to be able
to just run our team, takecare of the basketball, run our team,
get his teammates involved, don't worryabout scoring. And I think when
he focused on that those two things, it's amazing. Then he got into

(25:56):
a good flow on the offensive entin the second half, and you know,
he really gave us great set operationby guarding and then scoring the basketball.
And you know, he's a beautifulbasketball He's learning every day. He's
the ultimate competitor, team guy.He wants to win, he wants to
be out there, and I justthought it was a great conversation for me
to help him kind of get backin a good place and confident that we
believe in him, we need them. We're a much better basketball team when

(26:18):
he's playing that way. And Ithink you saw that Saturday, and hopefully
that's just you know, gives himgreat confidence moving forward. Absolutely, So
that's fan a four to four fromfrom the field. Not fortunate stuff,
like you said, just kind ofsimplifying and looking only one time only one
time we joked about that. Todayhe made whatever he forced, he made
it. He he was four orfour ten points, so only other in
double figures against A and t uh. You know, we talked about that

(26:41):
the loss to Elon on Thursday, but then Elon goes and wins at Trascyliseum,
where no other team has done thatagainst first place un CW. I
know it's a little cliche, butit does kind of show how any game,
on any given night it is.It is hard to win in whatever
conference you're in, and certainly inthis one is well it is. You
know Elon's You know, they werea hungry basketball team. They had gotten

(27:04):
beaten by a lot of points onMonday night, and again I think sometimes
the other team just plays a littlebetter than you, and they played very
well and we were not at ourbest gave ourselves a chance. But I
think the turnovers, the free throws, and just seeing college basketball winning on
the road is hard. You know, this group has done a heck of
a job. I think we've wonten games so far away from our building
this year. But I was reallyhappy with our focus after the game Thursday

(27:27):
into Friday to be able to getit done and get the one and one
on the weekend and get the splitthat we needed. And now what a
stretch coming up, you know, home stretch. Four games left to go
on the regular season, everybody kindof jockeying for position, and the defending
champion, Charleston comes to town. They'll play. They'll play tonight after this
show at eight o'clock. I'm sureyou guys will be scoring off again too,
so to do some TVs. Noone will blame me for doing that.

(27:48):
But they have scored over four morepoints than any other team in the
CIA. They're fast, they playa lot of pace, but if you
look at the overall stats on theseason, not one individual score in the
top fifteen. So there have justa multiple different weapons and array of players
getting it done for Charleston. Nottoo dissimilar from what they did last year.
Tell us a little bit about thisyear's version, Yeah, I mean

(28:10):
similar. They play a lot ofbodies, they play really fast, they
shoot a lot of threes. They'rea great offensive rebounding teams. So I
think if you think about the twokeys, or we got to be great
on the backboard, limiting them theone shot, and this group has done
a heck of a job guarding thethree point line. We're number one in
the league in three point percentage defense. I'm going to knock on woods saying
that leading into Thursday night, Butthis is a team that shoots a lot
for a lot of shots from thethree point line. They got multiple guys

(28:32):
that can stretch the floor. Soyou know, we want to be aggressive,
We want to be able to attack, and I think controlling Temple will
be important. But you know, these are the games that I think our
group are groups excited about and that'swhy you play college basketball, being the
position and for us, you know, looking big picture, we kind of
control our own destiny. We gotthree out of four at home. A
lot of these teams ahead of usin the conference play each other. So
if we can just handle our businessone game at a time, see what

(28:53):
shakes out as we get to thelatter part of the season. You know,
who knows where this thing where wecan be in the standings. And
I think that that's very well said, as you said, one game at
a time, because this is thetime of season where you start doing some
math and maybe you're you're rooting forcertain teams here and there, as you
look at the scoreboard. But ultimatelyit comes down to winning your game,

(29:14):
one game at a time. Becauseyou have such a veteran group, is
it a little easier A little lessneeds to be said about hey, getting
focused this time of year, becauseI feel like you guys are are locked
in our ro Yeah. I meanafter the game at A and T,
Christian Ray had on his phone theTows in Hampton game, and then on
the airplane you heard those guys roaringwhen Elon beat UNC Wilmington. So I
think our guys are aware of whata double by means where we are in

(29:37):
the standings. It talked to thestaff today like did we want to address
that with our team or not,and we just decided our focus is on
to prepare for Charleston. And thenyou know, each day we get closer
to the end of the season, maybe we touch on that, but our
focus as we get back to practicetomorrow has got to be what we need
to do to beat Charleston on Thursdaynight and see what happens. Yeah,
we were on the plane, itwas right before we took off that the
Elon the tipping win through. Iturned around with the screen and to show.

(30:02):
You guys were a couple of rowsback, you guys, But yeah,
we're watching it too. Yeah,we're on it. You're not the
only one watching the game on flow. Big game on Thursday night though,
at the Bob Cartner Center to thelast two CIA champions. We'll be playing
one another. Seating, as youmentioned, is going to be on the
line. The students are back. How much of a boost would be for
a nice crowd at the Bob onhere? Yeah, I mean we need
to get the word out. Imean, we got twenty plus thousand students

(30:23):
on our campus. We've had greatenergy in the Bob the last couple of
games we've had. It's it's beenimportant to us to be able to help
us get over the hump. Soit's going to be a blackout. We're
wearing our black uniforms and be anexciting time to come watch some college basketball.
And we need as many people inthere and be as loud as we
can to be able to knock offCharleston. We would love to see it.
A lot of energy in the building. Bluehens dot com get your tickets

(30:44):
now. Let's make it a toughplace to play. There has been great
energy in the Bob the last coupleof home games and deservedly so. Your
team is playing some solid basketball.Coach, you had the shortest segment.
That's all we got. I know, right, we're talking off anyways,
that's right. We've been on theroad, Martin, thank you so much.

back Bluen's Basketball Coaches Show our secondhalf hour. Now we switched the topics
out of the women's basketball program.I'm Matt Jannis, joined by the head
coach of the Hens, Sarah Jenkins. Coach. Always fun to talk to
you, always good to see you. I know that you have had happier

(33:42):
times than after the game yesterday againstDrexel, he had a ten point lead.
Why'd you have to say that? You promised me you would not go
full Patino today? Just I'm notgonna be that prescotference earlier. Yeah,
ten point lead in in the fourthquarter, fifty seven forty seven. You
had shot the ball as well asyou had at any game all year long,

(34:07):
and then all of a sudden,a lid pops on at two points
the last eight and a half minutesof the game. What was different about
the last eight minutes from the firstthirty two after? I know you watched
the film twenty five times last nightthirty two to be exact, what didn't
happen? Right? I think everythingthat could go wrong probably did the last

(34:27):
five minutes of the game. Imean, the biggest thing is we got
to take care of basketball, youknow, and we're turning the ball over
at key moments and that crushed us, right, So we had consecutive turnovers
that led to baskets, and thenthere were some moments where we didn't defend
well, gave up some threes, and you know, it's just stuff that
we've got to clean up. Andwe're in every game, so you know,

(34:51):
as a head coach, like I'mI mean, I'm going to probably
just sleep in Martin's office, likeon the couch so I can figure this
out. Because sure, he's happyto hear that, yeah, because I
mean I every game it's one ortwo possessions. And you know, trying
to teach a young new group howto win is difficult, right, because
and winning is hard. Winning ishard, and especially at this level,

(35:14):
it's hard. And so when youhave moments where you're in the game and
teaching a group how to finish, right, and that's where we're at.
We do not know how to finish. Man, We've got to make better
decisions down the stretch, the decisionsthat you're seeing on film that obviously aren't
happening earlier in games that you mentionedthe turnovers late. You know, our
kids trying to do too much? Are they just trying to put too much

(35:36):
on their shoulders at Sidney Boone playeda great first three coins, phenomenal first,
could not have been any better thanshe was. She put you in
position to have that ten point lead, and then four turnovers in the last
eight minutes, so out of characterfor her. When you go back and
look at those turnovers is the youwant me to get angry. Here I
walked in this door, I was, you know, smiling a little bit,

(35:59):
chuckle chuckle. You just want tolike go into detail about Yeah,
thanks, I appreciate that, youknow, I again, it's it's part
of the learning curve, and youknow that is just where this group has
to go, has to grow, and especially our upperclassmen, right, And
the reality is, you know,we have kids that aren't used to being

(36:19):
in these moments and playing in thesein these tough times and when it matters,
because what our kids are learning nowis that every possession counts, and
every play matters, and if youtake a play here all or you don't
execute here, it matters at theend. And you know, every game
we go back and watch film, and tomorrow we're gonna watch film and I'm
you know, I've got twenty clipsfired up a stuff that we know we

(36:39):
should have been doing that we didn'tand we lose by two points. And
so just teaching all of them theimportance of every possession and valuing every possession
that you're on the floor, becauseI think we have moments where we don't
and I think some of it's nerves, right, I think some of it
is confidence, and I think, you know, I have to continue to

(37:00):
build the confidence of our kids sothat they're not flustered in those moments and
They're not, you know, anxiousor nervous. They're just able to make
plays on the flip edge of thecoin. You do look at this team
and while you are kind of runninginto the same problem lading contests repeatedly,
this is an incredibly resilient group.I mean, that's a good Drexel team.

(37:20):
They put themselves right in position toget that win. It's got to
be such a difficult task for youand your staff right now to find that
fine line of Obviously there are thingsthat you've got to to work on and
keep improving, but you also haveto keep them mentally there, mentally strong.
And how hard has that been foryou as a staff, And how
proud of these kids are you thatthey keep showing up ready to work every

(37:44):
day they are. I think that'sa part of our culture, right We
do work hard. I don't thinkI ever go into a meeting with our
staff and we're like, our kidsjust didn't play hard today. I mean
that may have happened one time thisyear. So they're playing hard, they
are competing. We just are notfinishing. And that is our our focus
moving forward is we are right here, you know, and we just have
to finish and so you know,we've got to get you know, figure

(38:07):
out how to get them the processfinishing games. And that's I mean,
I know early any year were talkingabout trying to figure out how to teach
some of these younger players that haven'tbeen in this role before how to win
games. And that's kind of inthe same vein of the finishing stuff.
But you got more competitive inside ofpractice. Every drill became a competition.
What are you trying to do tomake that next step in terms of finishing

(38:30):
everything out. You know, wejust have to put understand the value that's
on the line, right, andso creating some scenarios where you know,
there creates anxiety in the moment, right, And so because that's what's happening
to us now, we are gettingin those moments and there's levels of anxiety
or fear or lack of confidence. And that's why you'll turn the ball over

(38:51):
three times in a row, oryou know, miss the wide open layups
that you would normally make. Isbecause there is a lack of confidence or
an anxiety to perform when there issomething on the line and the game,
every possession the game is on theline anyway, but it's a different pressure
that you feel when it's the lasttwo minutes of the game and it's a
one possession game and everything matters.Well, I have no shortage of confidence

(39:14):
that if your goal is to createanxiety, you will be able to find
a way to do it. I'mgonna find something really crazy in practice to
really, you know, freak themout. I don't know what I'm gonna
do yet. Now, Shaq's gonnago run in the group chat and tell
everybody I'm gonna do something to freakthem out. But you know, we've
got to figure this out. Andwe're getting down the stretch, and I
do think, you know, we'rethere are areas where we're playing better.

(39:37):
Like early on in the season,we were just throwing the ball all over
the place. We were averaging twentysomething turnovers a game, you know,
And now in the last five orsix games, yesterday we had twenty turnovers.
That's the most we've had in likefive games. Right, So we're
improving in certain areas. We justhave to put it all together, and
I'm praying that, you know.I don't know if it's like the basketball
curses upon me right now. Iwanted to go away. Well on that

(39:59):
front, A good person you thinkso absolutely? How good of a person
do you think I am, becauseI would like this cursed absolute tops,
great family, and you guys, somehow have used all of your luck.
It seems like in every other areaof your life right now you got to
find a way to bring I don'thave a I don't have a boyfriend yet,
so that's not I don't have goodluck on it boyfriend. I thought
you were going to hook me upwith somebody was not expecting us to go

(40:21):
in that direction here. I know. I didn't know you said. I've
had a lot of good luck.I don't have a husband. I should
be going for a husband, notboyfriend. If anyone knows, anybody,
just let me know available. Weare continuing to celebrate the anniversary of your
twenty first birthday. Every character youhave I is sure easy here in the

(40:44):
back, and you were talking abouta bright spot in a rough patch of
the year. Her development here aswe have gotten deeper into cia playing and
her ability that I just score theball herself, but she's drawing double teams
almost every time she touches it andgetting your teammates involved. How satisfying has
it been to see her improve fromwhere she was as a talented but raw

(41:05):
young kid too where she is now, where she's getting game planned against by
every team she is. I am, I am extremely proud of her,
and I think she is going toShe's not even close to how good she's
gonna be, and she's going tocontinue to evolve. I got a couple
of clips on it where she turnedthat ball over and that double team.
Now I'm gonna show her tomorrow.I hope she hear me. I know
she heard me talking about that.We need her to come for the next

(41:27):
segment, so don't scare her away. But I am, I am very
proud, and I think she's goingto be a name. I think she's
going to be one of the bestplayers to leave this program if she continues
to work and get better. Andshe's very hungry, you know, and
I and she's really hard on herself, and so she's like, man,
I should have made my free throwsyesterday. If I made my free throws,
we would have won. I'm like, your dad, gone right,
we would have run. But she'slearning and she's getting better, and she's

(41:52):
working hard, and she's a winner, and she wants to win, and
she's going to help this program dosome special things. What about her stood
out most of you on the trail. Was it her her swagger at her
moxy? Because it is? She'snot that cool. I think she's a
little bit cool. I don't knowif I think she's that cool. No.
She she is a very very skilledpost player. And you know,

(42:14):
if you're watching her, you knowshe's doing things just on raw ability,
and she's still learning how to readdefenses, and she's still learning and improving
her footwork around the rim and herpassing, you know, and so she's
just she's averaging double figures for uson raw talent as a freshman, and
I couldn't be proud of how she'sevolved. And I know, you know,

(42:36):
for her, the sky's delimit. When you first started recruiting her,
how many different ways did you pronounceher name before you got it right because
you were still December. I justcall her Shack. She plays, she
does, she does. Sometimes she'sreally nervous about coming up here, by
the way, and you staring daggersat her. I'm serious making life a

freshman from Baltimore, Maryland. Thankyou so much for taking the time to
be with us, No problem.I'm glad to be here. I don't

(45:12):
know how much I believe you.Sarah Jenkins already kind of routed you out
a little bit. But you areare somebody that everybody called Shack. I
was trying to, obviously, learnhow to say your name earlier in the
year, and everybody said, justcall her Shack. Is that a nickname
that you brought to Delaware or isthat a nickname that you've had your whole
life or is that just because SarahJenkins couldn't say your name. I had

(45:34):
it pretty much my whole life sinceI started playing basketball. I played like
in the rec league, and allI knew how to do was rebound and
put backs. So that's why theycalled me Shack. And I went hard
every time, and I didn't knowwhat I was doing, but I was
going hard. Well, you certainlyhave brought that with you to the college
level, as you have really comeinto your own here as we shifted into

(45:58):
CIA play. You have scored doubledigits now nine times. You are a
focal point of this offense, andyou are somebody that certainly does not lack
confidence when you're out there on thebasketball court. Has that always been a
part of your personality? You knowyou're good and you carry yourself that way,
And what does that do for youas a player. Well, I
just know nobody can guard me,So I just go out there and I

(46:22):
be confident, and I know Ican score, and I know I can
produce for the team, and Iknow I can help help us win.
And I know that if I'm notdoing something offensively, I can definitely help
defensively. So you probably had oneof my favorite answers of all time after
the win over Towson. We wereon TV that day. Christine Cormadam,

(46:44):
my broadcast partner, was interviewing you, and her first question, I don't
even remember what it was, andyou just matter of factly said, we're
trying to win the ship. We'reworking towards winning the ship, and this
is the type of thing that'll getus there. You are a freshman.
You don't hear young players say thingslike that very often. Just kind of
put all the chips on the tableproverbially. Is that something that you know

(47:06):
with these older players and you're runninginto some struggles that you kind of provide
to this team of Hey, we'restill pretty good. We can get much
better. We can get there. We're working towards it. Yeah, I
mean, I just know that wehave so much potential and I know we're
really good, Like we just haveto finish games and we're literally right there
every time. So I just knowthat we can keep playing hard, we

(47:30):
fix a few things, and wecan still win it. What is the
thing that has been the biggest surpriseto you in terms of your adjustment from
I used to go to college.Honestly, I didn't know I was going
to play that much, but Ithink I've earned my playing time and I
worked hard in practice and I showedCoach Sarah that you know, I need
to be in So yeah, whatwas the pitch from the Delaware coaching staff

(47:54):
that brought you here to Delaware? Was it the campus? Was it the
program? What made you a Bluehac? It was really the family environment,
Like they all welcomed me here eventhough it's like really not the same
team as last year, but it'sstill where a family. I really love
Coach Sarah, Coach Breezy, everybodyon the staff. They just welcomed you

(48:14):
with open arms. You come fromBaltimore, I know Towson recruited you really
hard, and you've got all theseDMV connections. It's such a great basketball
scene to have somebody like Sarah Jenkins, who's right in that scene. Maybe
the mayor sort to speak of itin a lot of different ways. And
also you mentioned Brie who lives downthere and has been a big part of

(48:35):
basketball down there, a high schoollegend in Baltimore. Just to ask her,
she's a big time legendary person downthere. What was it about this
staff that kind of brought you theconnection? Was it something that you could
tell right away or was it somethingthat build over top I could tell right
away, I was gonna go herelike Breezy. We went to the same

(48:55):
high school. So that was reallythat was raps me and her. That's
like, she is big a dealdown there. She says she is.
She has told me many times. She showed me her records. You hold.
She she was a heck of abasketball player, There is no doubt
about it. She says that youcould be better than her. Though do
you believe it? And what doesthat make you think? When you hear

(49:19):
a coach and somebody that you knowhow good they are say something like that.
She never told me that I thinkI could be better. Yet I
know I can be better. Ijust have to keep putting in the work
and be humble. What is foryou the thing that has surprised you most
about the campus at Delaware? Andno, you said you weren't expecting to

(49:42):
play maybe as much, or thebasketball court, But what about the atmosphere
here you did. It's a smallschool, it's not too big, it's
not too small. But I makea lot of new friends, like even
like normal people that don't play sports. They welcome me with open arms too,
and they are helping me get throughmy freshman year. So I heard

(50:02):
you give an answer a few weeksago at a media gathering where somebody asks
you what is your your biggest, unimportant talent, and you said, none
of my talents are unimportant. Whatwhat is something that you do best away
from the sport of basketball? Whatare some of those other talents We obviously
see what you can do on thefloor. I think I'm a really good

(50:24):
driver. Yeah I never got pulledover, not going wood, but I
think I'm a really good driver. So what what is that? Just something
that came naturally to you, orif people told you I'm a great you're
you're a great driver. I feelsafe riding in the car with you.
I've never actually heard that as somebodyclaiming that they're a great driver before,

(50:46):
unless maybe they do NASCAR or somethinglike that. No, everybody thinks I'm
a really good drive. They likeriding with me. The Princess and the
Frog. Is that your favorite movieis still? That is my five year
old daughter's favorite movie as well. What drew you to that movie? And
are you a big Disney person?Yeah, I'm a big Disney person.
But I remember when I was aboutsix, my mom took me to New

(51:07):
York when the movie first came outand we watched it, so it was
that was probably one of the bestdays, best birthdays of my life.
That's a cool memory. Family abig part of your life. Were they
happy to see you come to Delaware? And how much support are you getting
from them? My parents come tothe majority of the games. A lot

(51:29):
of my family's from like New Jerseyor the rest is from Baltimore, like
my dad was in Virginia. Hecomes to like the some of the away
games, but they come to themajority of the games. I really picked
the school because my parents are ableto come to the games and I really
need their support. So well, you are getting tons of support. How
good did it feel to get thatCIA Rookie of the Week award for the

(51:51):
first time? And well what ifthere Jack could say to you when you
when you won the award? Wasit nice to get some praise from her?
Yeah? She said I deserved it, and I think I did too.
I was just waiting on it.Uh, you are going to be
fun to watch over the next fouryears. What's the area of your game
do you think you can improve themost. M I honestly think I'm gonna

(52:13):
be a better shooter and Coach Aah'sgonna let me see some threes. Yeah,
she's gonna give me a green lights. Other than that, I think
I want to improve on ball handling, so I just don't have to be
in on the block all the time, but I can expand my horizons.
We've been doing this show for awhile now. You are the first player

(52:35):
that has ever openly tried to getmore shots. Most coaches or most players
are just trying to get out ofhere and not run the next day in
practice. So I'm pretty impressed bythat. Thank you so much for taking
the time to be with us andwe appreciate you sharing your store. Thank
you, I D sure's here?Did you trash me from Denaware? When
we return, we'll hear from SarahJenkins to see if that green light is

(52:57):
coming. This is Blueen's Basketball Coachesshow. This is Doctor Trade, a

Capriati Sandwich Shop, we want tomake one thing clear. We are not

(54:06):
just another sub shop. See subshops make sub sandwiches with sub cold cuts.
We make hours with hand pulled turkey. Sub shops don't make award winning
cheese steaks with premium American WAGU,and they definitely don't have what it takes
to be voted the greatest sandwich inAmerica. That's why Capriatis doesn't settle for

(54:27):
sub order online or through the Capriotesapp. As you are listening to the

Sports twelve ninety and the iHeartRadio app, precent it by First Date or the
beat X Welcome back into La CosaPasta Restaurant in New York. Yeah,
Welcome back Blue Hens Basketball Coaches Show. Final segment here on this Monday night,

(54:49):
and we welcome back in the headcoach of the Hens, Sarry Jenkins.
You heard Shaq talk about her enthusiasmfor potentially becoming an outside shooter someday,
was lobbying for that green lighters, that green light in her future period
and maybe the immediate future, notin the immediate future. She does shoot
him in practice sometimes, but sheshoots them in the game and she gets

(55:10):
a side eye from me, likea wicked, wicked side eye, and
then she looks at me and justsmiles. And it must she is somebody
though that I feel like the confidencein her game that has to be a
welcome saint when you're dealing with atrue freshman, because for so many kids,
they're just feeling it out, they'retrying to figure out their way early
in their careers. And she camein, I know she said she wasn't

(55:34):
planning on playing as much as shedid. I have a hard time believing
that she doesn't feel like the kindof person that thought she wasn't getting in
the lineup. First of all,she might have stressed the truth because when
she came in there, she toldme that by the time I was done
she was done, she was starting. She told me that in July.
So she is unbelievably confident, andthat is something about her that has helped

(55:59):
her elevate so quickly. Is becauseshe believes in herself and she can have
a good game, she can havea bad game. Her confidence is still
the same and that's half the battlefor you know, a lot of people
and I you know, at theend of the game, I don't know
how many times in my life I'dsay, I feel comfortable giving the ball
to a freshman, but I'd giveher the ball at the end of the
game. If I needed a basketand I felt that the matchup was right,

(56:20):
I would without hesitation give her theball. And I mean, I
am ecstatic at how she has justcome along. You are one of the
biggest Kobe Bryant fans that there's nodoubt about it. And last year during
the NBA All Star Game, youcame to the profound recognition somehow during the

(56:42):
All Star Game and exhibition that willstill no way he's anywhere near Kobe that
you were okay with Lebron James.I am. I like Lebron, you
know, I think he's a goodguy. Yeah, and you figure that
out. He's good. I likehim. I mean, he's a good
player. Is he's not my favoriteplayer? Though? My question is did
you have any other profound realizations duringthe All Star Game last night? Game

(57:07):
that where they were shooting three quarterthrees? I didn't know that the All
Star Game was on. I hadbigger problems that I didn't even know it
was All Star weekend. How manytimes did you watch the film after the
game yesterday? I've watched it todate five times. What is the thing
that stands out most too? Ourtransition defense was awful, right, And

(57:30):
so it is very hard to defendand transition when you're turning the ball over
and they're getting runouts for layups. But collectively for the entire game, our
transition defense was absolutely awful. Andfor a team that doesn't run a lot,
that's not good, right. Andso that's going to be our focus

(57:51):
this week to try to clean someof that stuff up, because when we
play the two teams this week thatlike to run, and they want to
run, and so we've got toclean that transition defense up. And I
mean, we got to take careof the ball, you know, I
I think you know, we hadtwenty turnovers. This was the first time
we've had twenty turnovers in like fivegames, So we've got to take care
of the ball. But you know, I am you know, we started

(58:13):
three freshmen yesterday, and you know, those kids played hard and they competed,
and they're gonna make mistakes, andour group is gonna make mistakes.
But I am so proud of howresilient that they are becoming, and they're
learning how to fight through adversity, you know, and we've got to continue
to improve that and continue continue towork on our you know, get up.

(58:35):
I like that you are somebody thatI've seen your process. I sat
next to on plane rides back before, in restaurants as we're waiting to get
on buses or planes and watch yougo over the film time and time again.
One thing everybody always asks me,because everybody that that is at least
somewhat of a sports fan knows thehours coaches keep. I mean, you

(58:55):
guys work as hard as anybody, especially on the college level, because you
have to build your team through recruiting, but you're also coaching in season.
You mentioned the five times there,I still question whether that number is accurate.
I think it's probably in double digits. But when you're rewatching the same
thing over and over again, whatare you looking for in terms of the
nuance on that second, that third, that fourth time through. You know,

(59:17):
I am probably the biggest critic ofmyself than anyone could ever be.
And every time I'm watching the filmor watching the possession is how could I
have fixed that? How could Ihave changed that? How could I have
prevented that? What could we dodifferently so this doesn't happen again? Am
I teaching it the right way?Or they're comprehending and understanding what I'm teaching,

(59:39):
And so like, as I'm watchingthat stuff, you know, I
really and it's not good, Butit's just the way I am. I
beat myself up over everything because Iwant to make sure I am doing my
job to the best of my abilityand putting these guys in a situation where
we can be successful. And youknow, for us, we're just right
there every single game, and youknow, if I can find one thing

(01:00:01):
to help us to get over thehump, you know that's what I'm looking
for. So just keep shipping awayat it. You know, well,
you have as you mentioned a lotof different ways where it's gotten right to
the edge and not getting over thehump. He will not be surprised by
anything in late game situations. That'sgotta be one of the silver linings.
You guys have been through pretty muchevery situation late and game so far this

(01:00:22):
year we have. And the frustratingpart as a coach is, you know,
you go back and you evaluate thegames, and you know the way
we lose. You know, it'sdifferent, right, Normally it's we don't
make a shot, right, andwe shot well all game, and then
the last five minutes of the game, we don't make a shot, you
know, like, and so it'sfiguring out, you know, how to

(01:00:45):
get over the hump. But it'sit's hard because it's always something different,
right, and so just trying toget our kids to learn and understand how
it ain't ever gonna be perfect, and it's never going to be you know,
especially at this well, you're notgonna blow people out every night.
I mean, one day we'll getthere, right, but we're not there
yet, and so we've got tolearn how to play through adversity, play

(01:01:07):
through mistakes, play through misshots, play through turnovers and not let the mistakes
compound. Well, I know ifanybody's gonna figure out, you're gonna be
the one to get it done.We really appreciate it. I know you're
down a little bit right now,but thanks for entertaining. It's on a
