head coach Sarah Jenkins on ninety fourto seven wdsd FM, Fox Sports twelve
ninety and the iHeartRadio app. Welcometo Klondike Case Restaurant and Saloon, the
heart of Main Street in Newark,Delaware. It's the first February edition of

(00:27):
the Blue Hens Basketball Coaches Show, sent by First Date, Orthop Poenix.
Welcome in to ninety four to sevenWDSDFM and iHeartRadio. Tonight we are live
from the heart of Main Street,Klondike Kates Restaurant in Newark. I'm Scott
Klassko, and tonight we'll talk aboutboth the men's and women's side, who
have combined to win five of theirlast seven games. How about that we

(00:49):
got some wins over the weekend fromthe women's team. Assistant coach Paris McBride
will be here along with the team'sleader in offensive rebounds and block shots,
Clark Scaniers will be here as well, lug it up for them. On
the women's side, and from themen's team. We'll hear from our head
coach Martin Inglesby, as well asthe team's leader in three pointers and steals,
Kevin Riley. Give it up forthose two. But first, please

(01:11):
welcome in for the first time onthe show. Second year assistant coach James
Robinson is here. Everybody. James, good crowd night. They heard you
were coming. They knew they bothteams got big wins. That's right.
They they appreciate you all coming out. They certainly did and appreciate you beyond
the show. I love talking withMartin, but I love being able to

(01:32):
talk to the assistants as well. With a great staff we have here at
the University of Delaware. You're inyear two with the Hens, so I
want to introduce our listeners or reintroduceyourself to them. Second season here.
How have you enjoyed your your timeworking at the University Delaware and with the
staff. Definitely, it's been anamazing experience going into year two, halfway
through at this point, but youknow, just looking back at my first

(01:55):
year on the coaching side of things, being welcomed into the Delaware family was
a really amazing feeling. Feeling beingaround the players the coaches on a day
to day basis made me really feelwelcome and really at home. Well good,
We're glad that you feel home here, and we want to talk about
your career in college, your professionalcareer as well, your high school.

(02:16):
We're gonna interest We're gonna talk allabout your accolades as well, but we
want to talk about the team becausea two and oh week. This week,
you got to win on the roadand then came back home, great
crowd at the Bob Karpner Center, got to win against mine. To talk
to coach Inglesby in the pre gameand postgame shows, and he spoke about
kind of simplifying the offense, andI wanted to get your thoughts on what

(02:37):
that meant for the team over thelast several games, because you scored over
eighty and three the last four ballgames. No, definitely, I think
simplifying the offense for us just meand keeping the ball movement, trusting our
teammates out there, having confidence inourselves and our other guys that are on
the court with us. And Ithink in the last two games we were
able to do that, put upa lot of points and more importantly,

(02:58):
come out with a week two andoh yeah, the wins over the week
were fantastic. Three times in thefirst eighteen Division one games, just scored
over eighty three. Last four gamesyou scored over eighty in some of that
space of play. And we knowwhat the defense has been able to do
this season for the Hens, butit was nice to see the ball go
through a bunch of talking with JamesRobinson, our assistant coach, and I

(03:21):
want to tell all of our listenersabout your accolades, your your career coming
in here, because you have apretty big resume. I'm talking right now
with the all time assist a turnoverratio leader in ACC history. You think
about all of the point guards thathave played in the ACC behind you,
Kendor Marshall, Trey Jones, TyLawson, Ty Jerome, I think you

(03:44):
know he's tenth on the list,Muggsy Bogues, Chris Paul Spudweb, those
type of names. So I wantedyou to get your thoughts on, just
like your playing career at Pittsburgh, what it meant to you. And then
obviously turn the ball over is somethingthat you must stress to your point guards
on the team. No, definitelyand I think, you know, first,
going back to my days at Pittsburgh, I was thankful to play really

(04:04):
good players, so they made myjob easy. The coach put me in
a good position not to turn theball over, so I just had to
take care of it. And Ithink, you know, our staff and
as a whole, tries to dothe same thing with our guys, put
them in the best position to succeed. And you know they've done a really
good job following that and taking careof business out there. I looked it
up to you play in the BigEast, your freshman freshman year, one

(04:26):
year in the Big East, ifthose stats counted at a SEC, you'd
still be number one. So Idid the math. They would still count
even with the freshman Big East anumbers. Now, talking about point guards,
kind of a unique makeup of thisteam because many times there's not necessarily
a true point guard on the floorwith this kind of newer starting lineup,
Gerald Drumgool in the starting lineup, sometimes it's a primary ball handler. Sometimes

(04:48):
you'll have Christian Ray a point forward, the tall skuy on the floor at
times bring the ball up the floor. And then when Jalen it is obviously
he's did the true point guard. But what are some of the advantages and
maybe some the disadvantages of having alineup that looks like that. Well,
I think it just makes us superunique, hard to guard. I think
that's what coach preaches. We wantto be unpredictable, really hard to guard.

(05:08):
So any of the five guys thatget the rebound were comfortable with them
pushing the break and trusting their decisionmaking them when they're out there on the
court making plays for themselves and others, and up until this point has been
really good for us and something wewant to continue to build on and just
keep trusting our guys, keep givingthem as much confidence as we can and
trusting them their abilities. Yeah, everybody is look good bringing that ball up

(05:29):
the floor. I want to goback to talk a little bit of your
college basketball career, because for thosethat have been following at Delaware basketball,
James Robinson is not a new namefor Delaware basketball because you played against Delaware
and Madison Square Garden back in Novemberof twenty thirteen. Gotta go a little
ways back. Yet, three assistsdid not turn the ball over in that
game. But what do you rememberat that part of your career about the

(05:55):
Delaware program. I remember it wasmy freshman year. We played at Madison
Square Garden. It was my firsttime at at the Garden, and I
just remember running on the court.I think it was the second day of
the event, and just kind ofjust being in all of uh, you
know, the venue that we wereplaying at, high level college basketball game,
and I was just thankful to bea part of it. Yeah,
you're if you're being if you're speakinghonest with you're probably think why is Delaware

(06:16):
here supposed to be virgin We upsetVirginia that year and we crashed the whole
party. It was. It wassome power Conference teams and and you were
one of them playing with with StevenAdams, I think was that's right,
Yes, Steve and IOWA freshman, that's right. Well, you come from
a big time program as well.Admatha Catholic and for those familiar with with
Delaware basketball, Domantha Catholic has hasbeen a big part of Delaware basketball in

(06:40):
history. Mike Bray Mike Pgeze isthe second leading scorer of all time,
leading three point shooter of all time. Ryan Allen comes to DA Maatha most
threes in the season. Nate Darlingcomes from Damatha. Uh So, how
would you describe the talent from thatarea in the w C a C and
the DC area. Definitely, it'sa very competitive area when it comes to
basketball. Hardworking, hardworking young menon the basketball court, in the classroom,

(07:05):
and I think those are two thingsthat really translate to uh, when
you're building a program, you wantto have guys that have those qualities.
And thankfully, you know the wC a C conference is close and we
can go and get some talented guysfrom there to help help out here.
We're glad you're on staff with weneed to have a connection in that area.
We're glad that any any insider informationbig news today with a lot of

(07:27):
rumor mill NFL stuff. Caleb Williamsgoing to the Commanders, do you get
insider information? Not insider information, but if he does go to w R
Are you a Commanders fan? Yeah, especially when they're winning. I know,
yeah, me too. I grewup in and they never were.
So I'm not like a huge NFLguy, but I know JJ is a
big Ravens fan. Coach Chilesby likegot the whole area covered. He likes

(07:49):
the Eagles as well. But goingon from your your college career, then
you've spent some time overseas. Youplayed in Bosnia where you won two championship,
played in Germany, played in Israel. What's that experience life going overseas
you're a young guy, you're inyour early twenties or what's that experience like?
I think it was a great experiencefor me. It was obviously a

(08:09):
culture shop, you know, interms of the food you eat, you
know, language barriers. But justhaving to you know, those challenges and
face of that adversity at at afairly young age, definitely made me a
lot stronger. Opened my eyes toother styles of basketball in the world.
You know. It really just showedme that, you know, just here
in the States, there are otherreally good players. What was your go

(08:31):
to food when you're overseas and you'relike, at least they have this big
chicken and frinds. Okay, atleast had that overseas. That's good to
know. We got some guys upplaying overseas right now. We talked about
a few shows Goo, Kevin Anderson, Ryan Allen, Dylan Painter, all
doing well overseas from Delaware. Notonly did you play overseas, but you
represented United States in international play. This guy played in the Under eighteen and

(08:56):
under nineteen FEETA Championships. You yourteam beat Nicola Jokic in the championship game
of the FIBA World Championships. Youplayed with Marcus Smart, you're local for
Aaron Gordon, those guys, whatwas that experience? Like? It was
a tough game, that gold medalgame. I can remember Jokic and Vasa
Mitchich who was on the OKC thunder. You know, they gave us a

(09:18):
real run for our money. Andit was crazy because when I got to
Bosnia, my assistant coach was actuallythe assistant for the Serbian national team,
right, So we talked a lotabout the game, just kind of going
back on it a little bit.But that was one of the first times
I saw, like, you know, these guys and these other international countries
can really play. When you sawa nineteen year old Ish Nicolea Jokicic,

(09:39):
I'm guessing he wasn't physically the mostdominating looking you know, he looks like
he's upset he has to go towork every time he goes to a game
for the Nuggets. But when yousee a guy like that, are you
thinking this is something that's gonna bethe best player in the NBA for a
long time? Or was it?Were you surprised? Maybe not the best
player in the NBA, but youusually with his like his skill level,

(10:01):
his feel for the game at thatsize, it was. It was incredible.
It was like amazing just to watch. Even as an opponent, it
was you could definitely tell one dayhe was gonna be something. And obviously
even as even as a youngster, well he's he might be on his way.
Unfortunately for Sixers fans to to anotherMVP just based on some rules.
Uh, thank you so much forjoining us for this segment and getting to

(10:24):
know a little bit more about youand your career as a head coach.
You're just getting started shot as anassistant coach, just getting started wherever your
pathmate may take it. In thatregard, what have you learned coming from
coming to Delaware we talk about yourtime as a player. Now as you're
transitioning into a coach, what haveyou learned about being a coach from from
this staff. I just think,at the end of the day, is
much more than just about basketball.I think coach Angles being the rest of

(10:46):
the staff, I really preach, you know, the reports of family and
like loving one another, and Ithink as a player sometimes you lose sight
of that just being so caught upwith yourself, and now in the coaching
role, you'd really just try topour yourself as much as you can into
these younger guys that are, youknow, going out there every day in
class, you know, on thecourt, really just doing everything they can,

(11:07):
So just trying to pour everything intothem. And then our next guest
on the show is Kevin Riley.E's be on after we take a time
out, before we take a breakthough, with your thoughts on the way
he's been playing it as a sophomore. He's been playing great. He's been
playing great. He's a big timehe's a big time contributor for us.
He's another WCAC guy, so right, always rooting for him. Definitely love
to see the growth that he's hadfrom a freshman now to a sophomore.

(11:31):
I know we had a lot ofa lot of season left and looking for
big things for him, not justthis season but throughout the rest of his
college career. Well, James,I appreciate you coming on. Great to
get to know you. Thanks forbeing you. We're glad that you are

Great to talk with assistant coach JamesRobinson. And now we'll talk with
sophomore Cavin Rileycavin, thanks so muchfor coming on. Thanks for having me.
Absolutely you uh, not a wholelot of freshman on the show,
but this is your second time onthe show, so this is this is
another appearance for you. We appreciateit. How did your day go,

(14:07):
because I know today is first dayback for spring semester, isn't it.
Yeah? First day classes today. That's always fun. Is that why you're
tired? I only had two classes? There, go there, you go
back. But it's all right. You're getting into the swing of things.
Yeah, yeah, good, good. We can get to some more students.
That's always good to have. Wehave like the longest winter session on
the planet, so it's nice thatwe can get some some students back in

(14:31):
the bob. Although we had agreat atmosphere on Saturday, a record setting
freshman season. You shot forty fivefrom three as your rookie. That is
the rookie record at the University ofDelaware. So you're coming off of a
nice season as a rookie of yearago. What was your focus coming into
this season on how to build uponthat? Honestly, just just stepping up
from where it was last year.I know I had a similar rule to

(14:52):
last year, but just on ona bigger like more minutes, more and
stuff like that. But coaches tellingme be confide. I mean, he
told me you have the ultimate greenlight, you know, just go out
there, play your game. Man. Yeah, that's really I mean that's
how does that feel to be playingwith a coach that says, go out
there and if you like the shot, take it. You have the green

(15:15):
light and anything you see that youwant anytime you want to shoot the ball,
shoot. I mean that's got tobe great to not only have confidence
yourself, but know that a coachhas that confidence in you. Yeah,
for sure. I mean when youplay with dudes that, especially like our
team like that likes to find youand we have a good flow offensively,
play pretty pretty freely, so ithelps a lot. Well, we know
how you can shoot the basketball. But I've been really impressed with your defense

(15:37):
this season. Now you lead theteam in steels. You had four steals
at Campbell, you had four stealsat William and Mary And we were talking
a little bit after the game atKaplan Arena about how you've made that jump
defensively, and a lot of itis film study, take us through what
you do to get ready for abasketball game. I mean, yeah,
we always watched film as a team, but also for me, like just

(15:58):
watching clips where I messed up andgetting better from that. And I mean
the coach will get on me toowhen I mess up, so I just
learned from what I did wrong andjust yeah, that's really it. Well,
what is the biggest difference then, maybe from freshman year you're moving up
a level from high school to Divisionone to this year, I would assume
there's a little bit more comfort levelout there and you're one to two.

(16:19):
I mean yeah, first off,I think I gained like ten to fifteen
pounds just from being here from lastyear, So that helps definitely when guys
are trying to like post you upor stuff like that. But I think
also just like being more confident onthat and I feel like sometimes I would
last year I would kind of belike a little too like antsy and kind
of just settling down, playing concertedconservative on defense. Well, hopefully it's

(16:41):
from going to the Flaco weight roomand not from Nacho's at Clon Decades.
It's muscle mass. It's yeah, but not right there we go. You've
had twenty nine points over the lasttwo games. You're really shooting the ball
well. Two weeks prior, youwere a little bit under your average in
terms of scoring. I know youtalked to coach Jingles b and you guys
were coming up with a plan howto get you back in the swing of

(17:02):
things, and it obviously worked becauseyou're shooting the ball and scored over the
last two helping this team win thelast two games. What'd you guys talk
about a little bit in terms ofgetting back on track just playing together.
I feel like we have a talentedteam, so any given night someone could
go off, but I feel likeit was just like playing as one.
I feel like the past few gamesor a couple of games, we've had
like balance scoring. Everyone's been yeah, been contributed, So I feel like

(17:25):
if we want to win a championship, then everyone's gonna have to play a
part and it'll help. Five anddoubles at William and Mary and obviously your
confidence never waivers, especially in biggames. Your freshman year you go to
Cameron Indoor Stadium, you had doublefigures in the first half. Then you
score twelve at College of Charleston atthe time was in the top twenty five
or around the top twenty five. You had fifteen at thousand and then this

(17:48):
year five three pointers against the BigEast opponent at Xavier. What's your mindset
heading into these big games because youalways seem to turn it up a level.
I mean, yeah, I justlike playing that type of aba.
I feel like every time it's likea big game like that, it's like
I feel like you got to stepup, especially when it's on national TV.
So that's really well. And whenthe lights are bright, you are

(18:10):
certainly shining. You have a prettysignificantly higher average on the road than at
home games throughout your career. Whatis it about stepping into somebody else's arena
that you like, Yeah, I'mtrying to change that. I was.
I was thinking about that the otherday, like and looking at the stats,
I've like a lot of my statsare better on the road. I

(18:30):
don't know if that's just like goinginto going into like an arena where no
one likes you and it's like acrazy atmosphere. But I feel like our
game, our game has been likeour home games have been a lot more
more packed. They've been fun.But yeah, I'm trying to change it.
Well, it was a great. It was a great. It's always
good to go into somebody else's arenaand and take take their crowd out of

(18:51):
it, and you're very good atdoing that. And then we had a
great atmosphere, I thought. OnSaturday, big win against Mom. I
talking with Cavin Rowley eighty eight careerthree pointers so far. I asked Christian
Ray, we call him c Ray. Obviously. I asked him two episodes
ago who else had a good nicknameon the team, and he said,
probably Cavin. We call him Chetty. Where does that come from? Unless

(19:11):
I don't want to know that. The backstory, the way that you laughed
made me think, where does that? What's chatty? How did you?
How do you get that nickname?Where'd that come from? I mean it
kind of means like a couple ofthings. But Jalen, Jalen Trent,
he would always just like call mecheese, like kind of like just like
shooting wise, like I've made ashot or somebody be like cheese. So
every time I see him now,he just calls me cheese. All right,

(19:33):
I will incorporate that to your nextthree point make. I'll shout out
cheese on the broadcast. We're goingto Towson on Thursday. You played high
school basketball with Christian May. Hewas a good ballplayer for that Towisend team.
How much trash talking goes on betweenyou guys during the game. I
mean, yea, it was badlast time, just because he had to
he had a good game, butwe talked. We talked like pretty much

(19:56):
every other day, probably about justhoops or life or whatever. So yeah,
he was talking a little crazy afterlast game. But hopefully we get
him back. We'll get him back. You run your mouth a little bit
on Thursday at Cicco. Uh youI think it was last year on the
show you kind of announced or alludedto that you'd be switching from eleven to
number three when Logan was done withit. Do you feel you feel better?

(20:19):
You look good in the three jersey? You feel you feel better wearing
three this year? Yeah? Igot the three and it's a, it's
a size smaller, so I looka little bigger in it now, Okay,
good? Yeah? So was thatsomething you asked for? You say,
let me get the extra medium insteadof the large just this year?
Yeah, for sure. I meanI was, I was, I was
skinnier in a bigger jersey. Soit just it wasn't It wasn't great.
Well, you look sharp. Andmy son he has a replica number three

(20:41):
jersey for for Delaware, so he'salways out there reping you at the game.
So talking with Cavin Riley a littlebit, let's finish off with some
some rapid fire questions. Uh,they just announced I think some of the
participants in the NBA three point shootoutthat's coming up in a couple of weeks.
Who's your favorite shooter to watch growingup or maybe even now? I
mean, I feel like the bestshooter ever Steph Curry. But I feel

(21:03):
like I'm a Celtics fan. SoI liked Ray Allen a lot. I
watched him. I am a Celticsfan as well, Cavin, and if
I had known this, this segmentwould have gone a whole lot different.
We would have been chatting about theCeltics for the for your entire ten minutes
on here. What made you Celticsfan? Well, my mom's she's gone
from that area, so she hasfamily there, but it's bad. I'm
all New York sports. Besides Celtics. My dad loved like Larry Birds.

(21:26):
So wow, so did my Dowe just become best friends? I think
I might just happen. Kevin, very cool. We talked about you and
Christian maybe talking trash during the game. Who chirps the most? Who talks
the most trash at Delaware? Ifyou guys are scrimmaging and and running in
practice, who talks the most?I feel like, And honestly depends on

(21:47):
the day. I feel like ifwhoever's making the most, whoever's making the
most shocks usually have something to say. But where would you fall in the
tier of trash talkers on the team? Towards the topper? Or are you
a little quieter? Probably like middleof the path. I mean, I
wouldn't go out of my way tosay something usually, but if I'm filming
myself or someone said something to me, I might. I might say something
good good. That's that's you know, it's fair game. You obviously have
the best hair on the team. When did you start growing out those locks?

(22:12):
I mean it's a newer look.Is this high school? When did
you? When did this start?I always had short hair, like my
yead would always like My parents werealways like they would get mad at me
if I had like long hair,I would always have to get like a
crew cut. So once I gotto college and I could just do whatever
I wanted, I was like, all right, it looks good. Shout
out Gay Moss. I think GayMoss has has a good do as well.

(22:33):
We agree with that, all right. You said you watch a lot
of game film. When you're notwatching game film, what shows or movies
are you watching right now? Imean, yeah, I don't play video
games or anything, so I'm alwayseither like watching sports or Netflix or something.
I'd say I just watched Peaky Blinders. I was pretty good. Okay,
I gotta get into that. Andthat was what's that Netflix? Yeah?

(22:55):
All right? Did they you borrowan accounts? They're making crackdowns?
You got your own account? No, that's good, all right? And
speaking of your family, your brotherLogan won the state championship as a sophomore
in golf. He shot a fourunder sixty seven in the state championship game.
Very impressive stuff. And you weretelling me off air he's gonna go
play golf in college in a coupleof years. Yeah, he's going to

(23:18):
Auburn. Very impressive stuff. Somy question though to you is are you
or anyone on this staff coming closeto beating your brother in golf? I
mean, the only reason I wouldsay maybe I could come close is just
because I can get in his head, like I'll get him mad a little
bit. But sixty seven, that'stough. You are a golfer, though,
Yeah, I'll play like in thesummer foot. But Logan's got you.

(23:41):
Yeah, all right, Well yougot him on the court, and
you've been getting all the opponents onthe court as well. You're doing a
fantastic job. We are so gladthat you are a Blue Hen and to
keep up all the great work.Kevin Riley, everybody, all right,

(25:56):
Some people are looking like I wishwe knew that before before we order tonight.
But we talked with with Coach Robinson, we talked with Kevin Riley and
now coach Martin Englesby is with us. Coach, thank you so much for
being here as well, and alwaysgreat to get to know the assistants,
love talking with you. But yougot such a great staff as well,
and James is a heck of anaddition. Last year. Yeah, I
mean, those guys did a greatjob. I always think it's great for
you know, the fans to hearfrom the assistants and you know, calvs

(26:19):
a pro at at doing it twoyears in a row. But again,
you know, happy with where weare, two game winning streak, coming
off those wins this weekend, andalways good to talk hoops. That's right,
So let's talk that. Let's dojust that. Two wins in a
row. We talked a little bitabout those w's with coach Robinson. But
in the last win, Christian Rayhe scored his one thousands point We had

(26:41):
talked about him about that a coupleof weeks back when he was here,
did it in pretty emphatic fashion witha dunk which was really neat. But
you know, even more than onethousand points, and it's a reason to
bring him up. But as Ilearned more and more about him and how
unique of a person he is,and four point zero GPA in last semester,
which is just fantastic. The leaderhe has been. As his college

(27:03):
season comes to closer to an endand his time in college come closer and
end, it's pretty neat to learnabout everything he has on the horizon and
what he's meant to this team.Yeah, I mean, I hope he
continues to play basketball, because Ido think he's got, you know,
great days ahead of him. Butyou know, he is a guy that
you wish you just had in yourprogram for four years. Just the ultimate
proa. What he does every day, handles his business. He's a terrific

(27:26):
student, great representative of a basketballprogram. He's a fabulous leader. He's
an unbelievable competitor. You know,if you came to practice every day,
it's the white team, which he'susually on, and then the blue team,
and he wants to kick the blueteams ass every day, even though
those guys are his teammates. Yeah, but yeah, I just I'm so
proud of his growth as a basketballplayer as a person. You know,

(27:48):
he brings it every day and youknow, you want to have guys like
that on your team every year, and you know, all the hard work
that he's put in to be ableto have a thousand points. He's close,
I think sixteen rebounds away from gettinga thousand rebounds. You know,
unbelievable career, and you know, just really happy for him in his development.
He needed he needed twelve and nineteento get both on the same game

(28:10):
against momb He got the points. He'll get there, but probably next game
with the with the rebounds the waythat he grabs him. I want to
talk to you about a couple ofguys that maybe we haven't talked about throughout
the season so far, but they'restarting to get a little bit more playing
time, and especially in that Mommothgame, Big three in the first half.
Another Bishop o'conaugh guy, Wes Peterson, as he continues to kind of
get himself into the rotation. What'sinteresting about Wes is did not get a

(28:33):
senior year of high school because ofCOVID. He gets injured in his first
game in college against Davidson on theroad and it takes some time to get
back. And also he had achampionship level team that he was kind of
buried on the depth chart a bitthere so on. He played eleven games
as a freshman last year, getsinjured in the first game again against Wilmington.
So he's really had a tough goal. But this is really his first

(28:56):
time healthy since in playing basketball. It's a twenty nineteen, twenty twenty season.
But there's still a lot of potentialfor him, No, there really
is. I mean, he's aversatile guard. He can really defend.
I think the most important thing himfor him has just been his health and
you know, the day to dayreps and getting better on the basketball court.
He's his third year in our program. We almost look at him as
a freshman because he has been injured. He's going to get there at least

(29:19):
a year back, but he's comingalong. He's putting pressure on the starting
group every day. You know,is Zion to say his injury, we
need another perimeter guy in there. And you're really happy for him to be
able to make a shot the otherday, and you know he had missed
some free throws in the game before, but to step up at a key
moment for us, Jerry made agreat pass for him and knocked down a
three point shot. And just wantto continue to give him the opportunity and

(29:40):
see him develop and he I thinkwill provide some really good perimeter debt for
us off the bench, and thenanother guy providing some depth and playing a
few more minutes. And it wasjust a great story when we were down
at William Mary. For those thatdon't that weren't listening to the game,
Houston. Emory's parents both played atWilliam and Mary. His mom was the
all time leader in blocks at Williamand Mary. That was a nugget Coach

(30:03):
Phillips gave me to use it onthe broadcast. But when she graduated,
dad played there as well. Iknow you said that wasn't the reason that
he played William Ry, that heearned that playing time, but he must
have been thrilled to be a partof that and playing in front of his
parents down. Yeah, I maygive him a lot of credit. I
mean, he battles Jaiere and ChristianRay and Tyler Howser every day on the
Blue team, and you know, just trying to look at our you know,

(30:26):
roster as a whole and seeing whatvalue he can add and just want
to give him an opportunity to continueto get some minutes. And again he
earned that with his work in practice. He's a guy that's been in the
gym a lot with coach Phillips andjust really getting comfortable out there and making
an impact. And it's a confidencething for Houston, you know, just
to be able to have some successand to see the ball go in or
what. You know, what impacthe can make for us, especially in

(30:48):
the defensive end of rebounding to basketball. So I want to continue to get
him in the mix and get himconfident because you know, we're going to
need all these guys as we navigatethe rest of the season. Well,
the next game in the season ison Thursday at a very hard place to
win for any opponent, and we'veseen how hard it is to win in
the CAAA. Townsend just lost atHollstro, a place that we had a
tough time with and everybody does.Earlier season, we saw Drexil lose at

(31:11):
Monmouth in their second loss of theyear. Townson though ten and zero at
home. They've won eighteen in arow at Ciccu Arena, not too far
removed from a very intense game acouple of saturdays ago. What adjustments do
you make for this one having recentlyplayed Towls, Yeah, I mean,
we're very familiar with them. Obviouslytheir style of play and the physicality that
you're gonna need to beat a teamlike that. You know. I think

(31:32):
two things come to mind. Thedefensive backboard and we got to be really
good and got to be men there, and then we were careless with the
basketball. This team has been reallygood taking care of the basketball and not
beating ourselves. But I believe wehad nine turnovers in the first half against
them and their style of play andtheir physicality, So you got to be
great with the basketball. We gotto be really deliberate and poised on the
road. Take it four minute segments. I do think our guys are excited

(31:53):
for the opportunity, and you know, especially with some confidence coming off a
two game winning streak. Yeah,we are excited to to go down to
Ciccu and get one and then comeback home. With thought, as I
leave this segment and we get towomen's basketball, I thought we had a
great atmosphere at the Bob Carpenter onSaturday. Yeah, it was awesome.
Nice to you had to win agame on Saturday with a great crowd.
I think over three thousand got anotheropportunity on Saturday against William and Mary.

(32:15):
But you know, we did ourpart. We have to continue to do
our part when we have our alumniand fans and the energy and the building.
Obviously, that was a back andforth game. Nice to be able
to get it done. Took alittle longer than we were liked on Saturday
views and the confetti fall in andall that kind of stuff. Did we
solve that mystery? I don't knowif we solved it, but we definitely
addressed it after the game. Butno, I mean, you know,

(32:37):
we need that energy, we needthat fan support. You know, it
means a lot to our guys, and you know he usually gets us over
the hump. All right, coach, we look forward to it. Best
of luck on Thursday and then backof the Bob on Saturday against William and
Mary. They'll do it. Forthe men's basketball portion of the program coming
up next, Matt Janet takes overalong with women's basketball assistant coach Paris McBride.

trail tonight. Paris, thanks somuch for taking the time to be with

(35:34):
us. Of course, was happyto be here. I was anticipating that
you were going to be the firstever guest in the history of the Blue
Hens Basketball Coaches Show who was onas a player and as a coach.
But you reminded me before we wenton the air you canceled on us not
once, not twice, but threedifferent times during your playing dates. I
mean canceled, Cass. I thinkyou absolutely did mean to cancel. You

(35:55):
were the only player in the entirehistory of my broadcasting career where a head
coach came up to me and saidif she has anywhere near double digit points.
Asked for Paris to be interviewed becausewe got a teach her to talk.
We got to get her talking more. They wanted you to get out
there and and now look at you. You are saying the same stuff to

(36:15):
Sydney Boone. She was here acouple of weeks ago and said, Paris
has always telling me to talk. That's a big job of a point guard.
It's a huge job. I meanI had to learn quick, so
he needs to learn quick too. What what has it been like transitioning from
your time as a player just acouple of years ago, you graduate and
go to the NCAA tournament in yourfinal game is a blue hen and now

(36:37):
getting to see the other side ofthe business sort of speak. What's that
been like? It's been fun,a great experience. I feel like it's
kind of hard at the same timetoo, because you're trying to relate.
It's easy to relate, but it'salso like getting them to understand and like
get them to doing that you wantthem to do and like, and that's
kind of hard when when you're deliveringa message and you hear yourself saying some

(37:00):
of the things that your coach hastold you that maybe made you roll your
eyes once or twice during your playingcareer. What's that been like? I
understand, I mean, if youregards I can't even get mad because,
like I would mine so well, you've been working hand in hand with the
point guard. You also do somuch of the video stuff for this Telero

(37:21):
team. What has been the biggestchallenge that you've faced so far? Oh,
the challenge, I would say it'spretty good that you're good enough at
it that you haven't had a lotof challenges so far. That's a good
sign, yeah, for sure. But I would say just balancing it,
like I'm not a player anymore,Like I really have to get them to

(37:42):
like produce and like really go outthere and do the things that I'm teaching
them. So, like, Ithink that's the biggest challenge, like getting
them to produce, because I getmad if they don't produce. But it's
like I can't really get mad becauseI understand I've been there and I've done
that. It's just going to takesome time. So you know, just
buying into that. Well, youproduced it awful lot during your playing career.
Obviously, Anchor Delaware to an NCAAtournament. But the thing that might
be most interesting about you is youknow you left you had the opportunity to

(38:07):
take an extra COVID year. Youtechnically still have a year of eligibility left.
I'm pretty sure on your time. But you were physically beat up,
right, That's why you didn't comeback for that last year. Moneys are
still fillling it, it's still feelingit. But yeah, you do adjusts
quite a bit on the bus rides, don't They still run pretty sore.
But you had to tell Sarah Jenkinsno that you weren't coming back. So

(38:30):
when you tell her no and thenyou turn around a year later and somehow
end up on her coaching staff,I knew you would eventually get there.
I didn't think you'd be able tomake amends so fast. How were you
able to do that love hate relationship? But she was understanding and it was
an opportunity and I couldn't start itdown. So I knew I had to
come back to my second home.So what is the thing about this team

(38:53):
that allowed them to play as wellas they did in the second half on
Sunday against haf Stre You get abig win, it need to win to
get the team back to four andfive in conference play. It was a
first half where the ball was notgoing in the basket. That's been kind
of a recurring theme for the team. They were eleven of their last fifty
five from three point range, andthen you guys knocked down six threes.

(39:15):
And at one stage I looked overat Sarah Jenkins. Her hands were up
in the air and she's looking atthe sky. I think she was pretty
happy to see that ball going tothe basket. I was happy too.
I mean, we've been we've beenstruggling a little bit, but the biggest
thing we told them was is tohave fun in the second half. So
to come out there and have funand you put into work, so shoot
the shots like you have confidence andthey're going to go win. And that's
what they did. One of thethings that we've heard this entire coaching staff

(39:37):
talking about with this young team andall the new parts that have been put
in places, they've got to learnhow to win games and trying to finish
down the stretch. You're somebody thatevery coach you ever played for that I
got the chance to talk to.One of the first words out of their
mouths in description of you, she'sa winner. How do you try to

(39:57):
correlate that from your experience as aplayer to explaining how you get it done?
In games adversity. I mean,I experienced adversity really early in my
playing career, so like when Igot to college, adversity was nothing.
So if you just keep pushing andfind through it, like, you're gonna
be at the top at the endof it. So that's that's why I
try to appreciate them to like, adversity is a big thing you guys have

(40:20):
to get through, so to realizethat that's how you win games at versity.
So I mean, I only know, like that is how I get
through things, Like I know thatadversity doesn't last forever. So just keep
pushing and keep doing the things thatyou practice every day, and you'll win
basketball games. It is your role, because you are so close to your
playing days, to relate to theplayers and also to explain to them when

(40:42):
Sarah Jenkins or another one of theassistants really upset, Hey, I've been
there before. It'll pass for sure. I'm like the middle man. They
come to me, like, canyou tell coach this or tell the kids
this? Like I'm literally the middleman, but it's I feel like I'm
that bridge for a reason. SoI try to get them to hear both
sides. Of it, like thecooking side, and then the players out
of like I know where you guysare, how you guys are feeling,

(41:05):
but also like we expect this ofyou, so definitely have It's a balance.
It was pretty fun. It cameto one of the practices before the
season started, and it wasn't theworld's best practice. It happens from time
to time. It's part of thegrowing pains of putting the team together.
And coach Jenkins kicked them out ofthe gym, which was not happy with
how it was going, and sothey disappeared for five minutes or so,

(41:25):
and then they decided they were goingto try to come back and maybe,
you know, impress her by theirwork ethic, and you just gave them
the note get out of here.It was not a comeback situation. Is
that the type of thing that youcan You can help these kids understand,
Hey, this is the time topush it, this is the time not
to Yeah, Honestly, when youget kicked out of practice, there's never
a comeback. I mean you justtake it and go about you You have

(41:46):
your you know, come to Jesusmoment as a team together in the locker
room and you just drag in thenext practice. It's the point of coming
back. What is the biggest thingthat you've seen in terms of improvement from
this team, because you know theresults aren't necessarily always what you would like,
but the way that you have competedagainst the top teams in the league.

(42:07):
I mean, the schedule has workedout where it played the first place,
second place, fourth place, andfifth place teams in the conference.
You were right there with all ofthem, fourth quarter leads in all four
of those games. I know yougot to find a way to get over
the finish line. But how fromnon conference where it was a struggle against
some better competition to hear in conferenceplay where you're right there, How have

(42:29):
you been able to do that?I think it's just growing their confidence.
They know they can play with theseteams and they can compete day in day
out, So I think their confidencejust build in and just game by game.
So yeah, there's the big thingswith their confidence and they can play
with the teams and sea with thebest of them. So when it comes
to March, you know we're readyto play and ready to compete. We
were at the dak on Friday nightin the game against Streke, sool,

(42:52):
had you been back at the Dacksince you won that CIA championship as a
player a couple of years ago. Now, it was my first night,
bet what was what was that likeoff the bus in a completely different role,
obviously in a different setting, nota championship setting, but going back
to what has to be one ofyour favorite moments, Oh, favorite moment.
It was probably like three seconds lefton the clog when we were just

(43:14):
sitting on the court and me standingon the court free throw line, and
then Juwel sank the two free throwsand we realized me one. So I
just looked at Jazz and Jazz lookedat me and was like like we finally
did it. And then that waslike the best moment ever. And then
Hull went off and me just celebrated. So it was surreal being back.
Nicole came up to me and basicallytook a picture of me, made a
whole post divide it, and I'mjust like, you didn't have to do

(43:36):
all of that. Well, Yeah, do you talk to a lot of
your teammates still all of them?Yep. From time to time I DM
them. We still have our groupchat, and I you know, DM
them or text them and see howthey're doing this this quick. I love
you and I miss you, guys. And that's not How happy were they
that you got into the business andalso came back to Delaware And they were

(43:57):
pretty happy for me. Got afew tech letters from the mall. Well,
I kept it from a lot ofpeople for a long time before they
posted all social media. Didn't tellanybody, but they were congratulating me and
stuff like that. How come youwant to make a public splash? Why'd
you keep it a secret? Ihad to did to. I had to
keep a secret. That's the thingyou chose to listen to Sarah Jenkins about.
That was the rule you chose tofollow me and I didn't come from
her. Okay, that makes sense, all right? We have Clark Skyners's

(44:21):
going to join us momentarily, andshe just got to go back to her
home state and really played a whaleof the game, especially in that second
half. And you know, youhave seen her go through some some ups
and downs this year and he justalways keeps going to work. You have
to be really proud of her.Yeah, for sure, I'm really proud
of her. Went out there anduh was home very successful and I feel

(44:43):
like she was kind of in aslump, but like getting out of it
and just talking to her and justmaking sure that she's always in it.
And when she comes by me,I give her my two cents that she
might want or might not want, but I'm want to give it to her,
but very proud of her. Seethat's what I like about your coach,
that you just give the two centsout no matter what you want.
You were get it out when youwere a player. Though. Anyway,

(46:58):
We were talking about transferring from Minnesotaa year now in your second year
at the University of Delaware. Whatwas the transition like and what made you
want to come to Delaware. Ithink, definitely, first and foremost just
being close to home, having myfamily be able to come out of see
these games, knowing that you knowI am going towards the end of my
collegiate career. I think the environmentsomething that I talk about a lot when

(47:20):
I talk to my friends about mydecision coming here, is just it's just
a family environment and it's genuine anda lot of schools recruit you and they
tell you one thing, but youknow, when I got here, it
was exactly what I said or whatthey said it would be. So I
think just the family environment and justhow much confidence I think our head coach
and our staff puts into us.You know, a lot of the times
you don't see head coaches really haveindividual relationships with their players. And just

(47:43):
the fact that I feel like coachthere is able to pour so much into
each one of us and be genuineis something that really affected my decision to
come here. And you, inparticular, have a lot of one on
one time as one of the leaderswith this team, and you see you
interact with with Harry Jenkins. What'sthat like? How do you put your
moments and pick your spots, andthen how much of it is as a
leader taking her messages in then makingsure the team's buying in everything as well.

(48:07):
I think similar to a PAIRA said, it's definitely a love hate relationship
with Jenkins. You know she's gonnacoach you hard, but at the end
of the day, she loves youso much. So just being able to,
you know, take whatever hard cultureand criticism comes with that and be
able to take it to the seamand translate this it on the court is
something that you know, I've taken, I've decided to step up and do
and it's something that you know,I'm just blessed to have the opportunity to

(48:27):
do. With this being the secondschool in my career. Well, you're
top ten in the CIA in blocksand rebounds so far this year. You
also are top ten and free throwpercentage as well. And you know your
role has evolved over the course ofthe year. The one buggaboo for you
this season you seem to get moreattention than you would like from the officials
from time to time were you weredealing with some early foul trouble, so

(48:49):
consequently your role had to switch alittle bit. They decided to move you
off the bench just to try togive you an opportunity to see how the
game was called so maybe you couldadjust and then, and also to steal
a couple of minutes early. Howhas that process been like, because obviously
you're still putting up starters stats andI'm sure you still view yourself as that
type of player because you are.But it seemed like it's worked out pretty

(49:10):
well. Yeah. I think withthe decision being made, whatever the team
needs is you know what I'll do, And I think just being able to
come off the bench now and beingable to, you know, to not
put my hands down as much inthat limited amount of time and be able
to go out and produce and seethe way the game is played. It's
helped me to you know, bemore productive and contribute more to our team.
It is funny, though, becauseyou and Chloe Wilson the two main

(49:34):
stage in the front line for theStellar Wart team. You know, I
don't think you've ever agreed with afall that have been caught on either one
of you all year long. Doyou practice those looks that you give the
referees after the whistles. It's definitelynot something that we practice, but I
know me and Chloe are both peoplethat are extremely passionate, so you know,
when something doesn't go our way,we make sure the refs though.
Is it like a contest where youtry to one up each other? Because

(49:57):
it really is impressive how you guyscan go right to the line your point
felt, but then come back neitherone of you You've got a technical follow
all year long. Yeah, youknow, I just feel like, you
know, that's the New York andus just being feisty, but you know,
just being able to at the endof the day, you know,
keep our composer and know that youknow, it's a passionate game, but
we need to make sure, wedo what's necessary to win. How nice
has it to have Chloe Wilson comein and have that player that obviously kind

(50:22):
of used the game the same wayyou do, and I know you get
along really well, and also somany shared life experiences. I mean,
having Chloe on this team has beengreat this year. I feel like she's
been just such a dynamic asset toour team. And then also having somebody
from New York. You know,me and Chloe played against each other in
aau in high school, so wehave a lot of history and I can
definitely say now she's one of thepeople that I really enjoy playing with.

(50:42):
So now you got the young freshmanthat you guys are trying to bring along
in Onda. Sure easy A.What's that process been like? Well that
long ago where you were the youngsterand people were teaching you. Have you
enjoyed being the mentor now? Yeah, I think it's definitely something that I
enjoy. Me Chloe and Andia wehang out a lot, and we spend
a lot of time with each otheron the court and off the court,
So just being able to talk toeach other and you know, just get

(51:05):
in the gym and just build thatchemistry and connection that we need to finish
out games has been something that I'veenjoyed first day of classes, getting back
into the routine. What's the biggestdifference for you in season going from winter
secsion where I'm sure it's a atleast when I was a student it was
a little bit less intense to nowback to regular schedule. I mean,
you know, I'm in my fifthyear, so I'm not taking that many

(51:27):
classes, so extremely happy about that. So my schedule it's not such a
huge change, but you know, still a good amount of time to get
in the gym and still hang outour teammates and get things done. What
is on your schedule this semester,Whiz, I should a double check that
you knew that before mass communications, theater course. It's just a couple of
things to make sure, you know, I finish up my degree. You

(51:50):
are interested in the broadcasting life comingout of school, right What draws you
to that? I think just beingable to be around the game somewhere to
Paris. I love play in thegame, but you know, my knees
are squeaking at this point, soso just trying to you know, whether
it's coaching or playing overseas, orjust going as broadcast commentator. Making sure
that I'm able to be around thegame. I love well. He carried
me through this segment and my onlypiece of advice make sure you know how

(52:13):
to use the equipment. We'll moveforward, Clark Skyness, thank you so
much for being with us. Thankyou, Bradin. We'll take a break

(54:07):
program, and Paris, you know, you did not know you had a
second segment where you had to talkto us. Did you pull the plug
on your way down the last timeso you would have to come back up
here? I need to plug mygoodness, you could have just told me
we would have figured out something different. You are somebody that you mentioned your
knees. They gave you a lotof trouble throughout your playing career. I

(54:30):
don't know if I can remember aplayer that played through as many injuries where
a head coach would say there's nochance that she's going to play, and
then you would you would talk aboutthat in the pregame show, and then
there you'd be in the starting lineup. You always seem to be a gamer
who would make it happen on gameday. Is that something that that's always
been a part of your DNA?And where did that come from? Oh?

(54:52):
For sure? Like I don't likethem as basketball game. So when
I was out, when it wasit was hurting a little bit. But
on said earlier, adversity, likean injury is just adversity. So I
was always taught to this fight through. So that's what I was going to
do. Pain or not well,if I was going to interview, I
figured, or interview you, Ifigured I had to talk to our athletic
trainer, Mel Johnson and ask herif she had any stories, because,

(55:14):
as in the words of Mel,you spent more time in the training room
than any player maybe in program history. And she said, you have to
ask Paris about her playing days. The time when tie battle knock your flat
on your back and you did notmiss a beat. Do you remember that.
I don't remember getting up that fast, but I watched a video.
I'm running and I'm thinking I'm goingto get the rebound she was person on

(55:36):
the court. I don't know whyI thought that. So I'm running after
her rebound and here comes to highboom. I hit the ground. But
all I could think of is theyhave the ball. So I had to
get back on defense now like Ihave to get back. So as soon
as I hit the floor, Ihad to get up. Mel said that
at first she was worried you weregoing to run the wrong way, because
she assumed you had to be knockedsenseless. He hit her that hard,
and then she came up. Shehad to pull you over obviously and walk

(55:58):
you through all the tests and everything, and she said, you didn't get
a lot of those questions right anyway, but you were okay, ready to
go. Hey, I was readyto go. I just want to get
back in the game. Honestly. That was mel Johnson. By the way,
that wasn't Mary. I just wantto put that on the record,
But William and Mary coming up onFriday at home, big home game.
You came so close to taking themdown a few weeks ago, had the

(56:22):
lead in the third quarter, hadthe lead in the fourth quarter, and
then just could not finish it.And then in overtime they were able to
make an adjustment ball would not goin. What did this team learn from
that and how can they flip thescript on Friday night? I think they
learned a lot from it, aslike, look at it as like the
game is not over just because you'reyou're for that time beating like game like

(56:45):
basketball, game is the game ofrun, So like once you go here
and run, they're going to goin there run. So you got to
be prepared to stop their run.So I think that's the biggest thing they
have to learn from that. ButI think we are We're going to prepare
for wingm Mary and they're a goodbasketball team, but we're gonna prepare,
We're gonna learn from our last game, make adjustments, so she'd be a
good game Friday. When as acoach, you are in charge of making

(57:07):
sure that the film's ready to gofor Sarah Jenkins, that's a big part
of your responsibility on these road trips. How different is it when you were
a player You come on the bus, he kind of just put your head
down and take the trip. Life'sa little bit different now for you on
these road trips and a lot moreresponsibility in between games at least. Yeah,
road trips are a little stressful.I have to get up and I

(57:30):
have to, you know, makesure everything's done way before the girls get
down there or way before coach getsdown there. And as a player,
you just show up, just everything'sdone to show up. But it was
funny because Sarah Jenkins is about asgood as technology as I am. When
I couldn't keep the equipment on earlier, she really struggles and will be driving

(57:50):
it'll be quiet for forty five minutesand then all you hear is her screen
Paris. And because she's got toget the next piece of film. How
did you learn to to be suchan efficient person at getting her set up?
You always do things way before shewants it done. I mean like
I had to learn that quick. Can just wait till she asked for that
I already haven't done, so shedoesn't have to ask. But you know,

(58:12):
here in Paris on the bus isa little stress, always on alert,
but get things knowing fast for her. It is funny though, because
she gave you pretty good praise. She said, you know, I wish
that you would have been able tolearn this fast as a player. If
you have it as a coach, say you love it, That was her
line. But you have done amagnificent job. I know that. This

(58:34):
is you know, after you canceledfour times as a player. This is
not your favorite setting to be herethrough. But you did a great job.
And thank you so much for forgivingus your Monday night. I don't
know who told you I cancel it. I didn't do that. I mean
I just remember the emails Paris,Bigbride, Thank you so much. That'll
do it for us on the FluydsBasketball Coaches Show. Our thanks to Clark
