being here one last time this year. I'm Scott Klaskin. Tonight we'll get
you set for the CAAA Tournament forthe men's team and one final regular season

(00:48):
road trip down South for the women'steam. We'll talk with women's head coach
Sarah Jenkins, and on the men'sside, a player that's no stranger to
success in DC A former CAAA TournamentMost Out player in this season's leading score
Jay R. Davis is here. We'll also hear from our head coach Martin
Inglesby. But first, please welcomein first year assistant coach JJ Butler's on

(01:11):
the show. Jj. Welcome tothe show. Thanks for having me man,
Absolutely so excited to be talking withyou and your first Before we get
into everything, first season here atDelaware, how have you enjoyed being a
part of the staff, being apart of this team and and working with
this great group of guys. Firstand foremost, I just want to say
thank you to Coach Englesbe for theopportunity it's been. It's been a blast.

(01:34):
Love the staff, great group ofguys, love the team, really
fun group to be around day today. The experience has been awesome,
though not much to complain about.A ton of people ask me just because
it's a new endeavor for me andmy family, But yeah, my answer
to everybody is the same thing. It's really hard to complain when you're at
Delaware. Absolutely, we're glad tohave you on. And while we're talking

(01:55):
about staff, I want to givea happy birthday to another assistant coach we
talked to earlier this season, JamesRobinson. Everybody, happy birthday, Jay
Robbs, Is this a big three? Oh, it's a big the Big
three. Oh, James Robinson,Happy birthday to you. A great place
to spend your birthday, Klondike Kates. I spent my twenty first birthday in
this very row. Leave. Ispent a few minutes in the bathroom around

(02:16):
the corner. But second half,we bounced back, We bounced back,
had a great second half. Let'stalk about we're gonna learn a little bit
about you in your first season, but let's talk about this team a little
bit. You know, not theway that you wanted to finish off the
regular season, but you had awhole week here of kind of pushing the
reset button, restart before you headdown to DC. What's the mindset of

(02:36):
this team now as we prepare itto head down to the tournament. Yeah,
man, I mean coaching will beset it to our group earlier today.
We it's a new season, right, no wins, no losses.
We're going into March really excited forthe opportunity at hand. And despite not
necessarily ending the regular season the waywe wanted to shoot. The last time

(02:57):
the Bluehens won a championship, Idon't think they did that either. So
yes, I don't think that preventsus from achieving the goal that we want
to. That is a very true. In twenty twenty two, Delaware came
off of three straight losses before makingthree straight wins down in DC. Let's
let our listeners know a little bitabout yourself. A new coach on this
team, but you were a formerhead coach at Chestnut Hill College. So

(03:19):
what's the biggest difference for you comingfrom the head coaching position at a Division
two school to now being an assistanthere at Delaware. I can definitely acknowledge
the difference in the day to dayof the level of Division two rather than
the Division one. And then Ithink the biggest part for me is continuing
to learn how to be a bettercoach, continuing to learn how to,

(03:42):
as people would say, skin thecat. There's a million ways to skin
a cat. And I think coachangles Be and I are different types of
head coaches, but I've really enjoyedlearning the way he does things, and
in the short time I've been herethis year, I've learned more than I
could imagine I would learn in theyear one. So I'm just taking the
day of to day and learning asmuch as possible as we go on,
well, it's been a have youon board, and then looking back to

(04:02):
prior to your your head coaching careerand coaching career start, you played college
ball at Lipscomb in Nashville, Tennessee, and uh, you know that that
isn't too far removed for your playingcareer a young guy on the staff,
how is being a former college basketballplayer and doing that not too long ago
kind of helped you relate and connectto this generation of basketball players. First,

(04:25):
I'll start bustaying, I don't thinkmy playing career translates well to these
guys, Like I don't think myselfchecking out what Ir Davis a few years
ago does me any justice. Nonetheless, though, I think just the approximity
and time allows me to acknowledge theimportance of juggling the time management piece of
it. I do think I'm ableto level with guys regarding how difficult it

(04:45):
is at times to handle your schoolwork, getting the gym when you need to
us outside of practice and find findingways to be successful in everything they're doing.
And I think my ability as ayoung coach to level with those guys
and remember what it was like justbecause it wasn't that too far I'm not
too far from from it. Ithink helps me relate to him and create

(05:06):
relationships with him, certainly making alasting impact already with this team. Now,
I mentioned you went to school atLipscombe, which is in Nashville,
Tennessee. Yes, that is abouttwelve minutes from Broadway in Nashville. How
does anyone get any school work doneat a school like that? We had
great supports. I was a littlescared of mom and dad at home too,

(05:27):
so I was able to juggle itappropriately and did pretty well in the
classroom. But that was not withouttime. I best had a good time.
No follow up questions in terms ofthat will be Nashville adjacent in a
couple of years in league play withMiddle Tennessee State coming up. Now,
talking with JJ Butler, assistant coacharm this squad for the first time this
season, you had to delay thestart of your assistant coaching career at the

(05:53):
University Delaware for very good reason.A big congratulation. You and your wife
introduced your daughter, Harper on thenight that we played Buck. Now,
gratulations to that. That's outstanding andand how's that? How's it been going.
It's been a whirlwind, uh,kind of balancing the new job and
a baby. But at the sametime, I can't think coachingles be enough.
He's been extremely accommodating for Marina andI as we kind of embark on

(06:15):
this new journey for us as parents. Harper's had her few appearances at practice,
which has been awesome for me.I've think coach multiple times. But
that's got to be great to have, you know, a head coach,
a boss that is such a familyman. Coaches family is here and you
know Will Kate, Jack Ben andhis wife Colleen doing a great job of
being a family. But because ofthat kind of understanding what it takes and

(06:39):
allowing you to to be a fatherand in your first year and be flexible,
I would think, yeah, no, it's been awesome. I hope
when the time comes that I cankind of follow his lead and continue to
have harboring any children we have inthe future around the program as much as
he has his kids. It's awesometo see him. I think it's a
great atmosphere for them to be aof And I don't know, it's tough

(07:01):
for this profession to be around yourfamily as much as you like, and
seeing the way he juggles it isis inspiring. Inspiring just knowing that I
can juggle it when the time comes, if I'm able to becoming a head
coach again, absolutely well. Offto a great start here at Delaware.
And then now let's talk a littleX and O's talking about coaching and talking
with JJ Butler. You know,we started this month the Delaware did on

(07:24):
a four game winning streak. We'reaveraging seventy seven points per game, the
ball was going through the hoopa alittle bit better. And then over the
last six games of the month,we're averaging under sixty five points per game,
or about sixty five points per game. So shots and makes it been
hard to come by, certainly againstTony Brook the other night. So what's
the process this week as you hitthat reset button and you have some time
to regroup, take us behind thecoaching staff doors and kind of what's the

(07:48):
progress of finding some answers to getthe ball scoring again a little bit more.
I think a big part of itis trusting our guys. It's a
make or miss game, and Idon't think we've lost any confidence in our
group. I think we have aton of guys that can put the ball
in the hole. I don't thinkscoring is something that we shouldn't necessarily be.
I don't know nervous and whether ornot it's going to come to fruition

(08:11):
come the conference tournament. I thinka big part of preparation this week is
continuing to allow our guys to shootshots and see the ball go on the
hole, and then shore things upon the defensive end, because we do
know to make a miss game andnot to say that we're just going to
be hitting every single shot come totournament time, but being able to shore
some things up on the defensive endso we when we do go through droughts,
we're able to kind of balance theattack and maybe slow down our opponent

(08:33):
to allow us to get back ontrack. Offensive and getting SAPs and lean
out to some transition buckets and notplaying against the set defenses has worked pretty
well for this team as well.Did get a win against Northeastern on Senior
Day. Always important to close outyour home floor with the W guys were
able to do that. I knowyou have only been here for this one
season, but talk a little bitabout the impact and what you've seen from

(08:54):
your guys at Jalen Trent and ChristianRay. Of course, Odia A gun
Bow was honored as well. Butwe've seen what Christian and Jail have been
able to do. Yes, SirJalen. He has an infectious personality,
shows up every day, is ableto put smiles on our faces and his
teammates faces, which I think ishuge. Just being a positive influence regardless
of what his role or what we'reasking him to do, and just how

(09:16):
hard he plays is inspiring as acoach. Just knowing that he's willing to
lay it all on the line forus. And then Christian Ray, I
think I don't know the amount ofthings that people good things that people say
about Christian Ray is endless. Justseeing how he approaches every day as a
leader, seeing how he's so willingto do things that don't come up on
the stat sheet. Obviously, athousand rebounds one thousand points is really impressive.

(09:39):
Not many guys are able to dothat in a college career. So
just seeing how he does that andthen also leads our group has been inspiring.
It feels like Christian has been hereall four years. He's been a
two year guy at Dellwart's felt likehis impact has lasted more than that.
And then we're going to talk withJay or davish it in a little bit.
He is here and he's been toDC before. Not many teams heading
down to the tournament have a guyon their team that with a championship caliber

(10:03):
resume down in the tournament. He'sa former SA Tournament Most Outstanding Player.
Last year in Round one he hadtwenty one points fourteen rebounds down in DC.
So do you turn this week toJai and say, look, you're
kind of the guy we have tolean on when we're down at the tournament.
Yeah, I don't think we areour best unless Chai Yar Davis is
the best version of himself and forus to win the tournament. I think

(10:26):
everybody's pretty aware that we need himto be the guy he is, and
I think we're really confident that he'sgoing to be that guy. I'd imagine
he's going to tell you he's justas confident, but no, I think
it's just approaching it the way we'veapproached it all year and continue to play
with basketball and get him the ballon spossible. He's confident, successful and
let it go from there. Well, we look forward to it. JJ.

(10:46):
We appreciate you coming on. Youand I had a connection though,
even prior to the season, becauseI get a text message from your aunt
Katie, who is a lot ofpeople think I just show up at seven
o'clock for these broadcasts, by theway, and do nothing during the rest
of my time. I have afull time job at iHeartMedia, Thank you
very much. Katie is one ofthe sales managers at iHeartMedia who is one

(11:07):
of just my favorite people. Butshe's right, yeah, no, she's
great, small world. She shotme a text when I got the job
and told me that she was reallyexcited for us to get a chance to
meet n She's really supportive in mycareer. And she actually has two little
ones as well. That's right,So you have both both cousins of mine,
but one just a year or shoota few months older than Harper.

(11:28):
So's she's great. She's not evenmy direct sales manager, but she's my
at office when I'm guys, that'stended to Katie. She'll still take care
of everything. Well. I amglad that I got a text message from
her as well, telling me thatyou were hired I'm so glad you're part
of the staff. JJ Butler.Everybody thank you at JJ Butler will take
a time out. We come back. We'll talk with our leading scorer on

next to Jay R. Davis.Everybody, gyir, welcome my friend,
thank you, welcome back. Wesaved you for the final show. You
know, they say saved the bestfor last, and you've been playing that
way certainly last game and this season, seventeen and a half points per game.

(14:09):
You hit one thousand early on inthe career or for your career early
on in this season. So happyto have you with this team. Let's
let's talk a little bit of hoopscoming off of Saturday's game against Tonybrook.
Obviously, you know I mentioned withJJ not the way that you wanted to
finish the year, but a reseton the year. You get some time
to get ready and prepare for goingdown to Washington, DC. So take

(14:31):
me through the mindset of this teamand then your role as a captain in
the part that you play and gettingthis team prepared for tournament play. I
think it's no secret that we definitelyhave had our highs and lows out of
the season, but I think justabout every team has. But going down
to the tournament, you know, you win one game, you're done.
Some years, a lot of teamsthat would say they had a lot of

(14:52):
highs and more highs and lows thisseason that are that are going to go
down there and lose their game andthen they're going to go home, just
like anybody else would. I mean, we're all, you know, when
in lossless right now, we're justready to go down there compete. When
you won the tournament most Outstanding Playerin twenty twenty two and the team cut
down the nets and what an outstandingmoment that was. What do you remember
about what it took for that teamto come together that week because they did

(15:15):
not finish strong that year either.I think it's a certain level togetherness.
You know, nobody cared who scored, nobody cared who got to stop,
who had to rebound. I thinkwe're all very desperate and ready to play,
and I think that's something that thisteam can definitely replicate this year too.
I think so well. I wantto talk about your game individually,
because we've known since then, sincequite frankly well before you were a della

(15:37):
or just how good of a ballplayeryou are representing the first State, but
you've taken your game to another leveland we've seen the growth of you certainly
this season. I want to startwith that mid range jump shot. One
of the best mid range jumpers incollege basketball. You see my partner Bill
Harmon every time he goes nuts. How did that develop? How did you
work on that this offseason or duringthis season to get to where it is

(16:00):
now. I think it's just agood shot. You know, It's a
shot that I know I can kindof rely on and get to throughout a
game. You know, shooting pullup threes and that's like the best shot,
but then all the time you can'talways get to the basket. So
I think it's a good in betweenshode that you know, I can rely
on throughout games and not speaks forto just be confident in the work I
put in an off season. Youknow, you have great coaches who helped
me out throughout the year. Youknow, just believe in what we do.

(16:22):
And then you raised your percentage atone point, I think you raised
it over twenty percent from the freethrow line. It's plus sixteen on the
season now from the free throw line, and was there any tweaks that you
made? Because I know it's repetitionand the more free throws you shoot,
the better it could be. Butif that was the case, everybody would
just shoot a thousand free throws aday and shoot one hundred percent. So

(16:42):
were there any tweaks you made inthat shot from the line this year?
Because it's so vastly improved, there'sdefinitely not a bad symbol. But I
think I should get up there andbelieve myself, try to be calm.
You know, you're right in frontof the basket, so I try not
overthink it, just try to makethe shot. Honestly, Well, you've
been doing a great job of doingthat over eighty percent on the season,
and you know, as as junior, as a third year guy, you

(17:03):
are number one, number two,and number three. I'm sure on these
teams scouter reports, they're talking aboutjay R. Davis and how do we
stop Jay R. Davis in thesegames? And because of that, you
know, it's got to be assomebody that that, trust me, has
never been double teams in his life. No one's ever thrown a double team
my way. I don't know whatit feels like. But it's got to
be frustrating to go against one anda half two players every time you have

(17:23):
the basketball. How hard is thatto change your mindset from Uh, you
know, I'm frustrated about this too. All right, if they're gonna double
team me, I'm gonna find waysthat other players are gonna get involved.
I mean, it definitely adjustment.I mean my first year here, you
know, I didn't start to playme in full minutes probably until like halfway
through the season. So I feellike that season I kind of just caught
a lot of teams by surprise. You know. I look back and kind

(17:45):
of laugh at how easy it was. It just like dribble to the basket
and score back then right be themnow. You know, definitely, teams
are definitely making adjustments and trying todouble team and stuff like that. I
mean, honestly speaking, it canbe I guess annoying, but to try
to make the right play and justtry to, you know, continue to
stay locked being regardless. Absolutely well. On Thursday, you were able to
get a victory talk with coach Butlerabout the win for Senior Day and to

(18:06):
get those seniors Jalen and Christian rayO d a win on Thursday. I'm
sure that was meaningful for you andyour team. And take us back to
that night and what it meant forthose guys go out on top. I
mean yeah, for so, youknow, those guys mean a lot to
our team, a lot to ourprogram, and you know, their last
game in Delaware, we couldn't leaventhe loss, so you definitely had to
make sure to find a way towin that game. We are gonna have
to maybe expand seating at the Bobfor your senior Day because there's a lot
of people that are gonna be excitedto see jay Or Davis seventeen and a

(18:30):
half points per game over thirteen hundredcareer points at Delaware, already in the
top fifteen. We talk about thesupport that you have from this state and
your support group in the stands athome away, they are there cheering you
on. Tell us a little bitabout everybody that we're seeing in the stands
of game in and game out.I mean, ever sorted me in the
world in me, you know alot of people have families where like they

(18:52):
feel pressure from their family or likebasketballs and mean topic of their family,
mean of course you talk about basketball, about a game, you know,
they know more about our team sometimesI think I do. But I mean
despite that, I think, youknow, they really just love me and
I love them. They support meregardless of what's going on in the basketball
court, whether the shids are goingin while I'm getting a rebound, and
that's something I definitely value. Youknow, after having like a bad game,

(19:14):
I not can go to them andthey're not going to be too hard
on me about the game or beupset about the game. You know,
they just like to support. Well. We're so glad that we see them
cheering on in all the games andit's so great to have them. They're
here tonight. We got s inthe corner here at Kate's as well.
And you know, you're you're fromDelaware. You're you're from the state of
Delaware. So they went to Sandfordand then prior to that, I grew

(19:37):
up in the state as well.Is that kind of a badge of honor
for you? Is that something thatthat you that you wear with pride that
you are from this small state yetable to represent Delaware and do big things.
Yeah, definitely. I mean Itake a lot of pride. I
don't think too many people know that, but I take a lot of pride
and playing at deublaware you know beingon his team. I'm from Delaware.
I mean it is the place whereI've grown up, been the countless games

(19:57):
at the Bob and countless football gamesfor ever guy here as a student,
So you know, it definitely meansa lot to win games here, and
you know, every time I playfor him, you know, definitely something
I take serious. You are athird all time in Delawareans in scoring at
the University of Delaware. So yougot Oscar Jones who went day I do
pond, and then Juwan Carter isis next on the list. You probably

(20:18):
saw Juan play a little bit. That's right. Well, he he started
as eighth grader at Tattennall and he'steen one hundred points. Your your your
few games away from from getting thatthough, you're on pace next season,
but really impressive stuff. And withthat, do you think about legacy and
and kind of your lasting impression atthe University of Delaware because you are are

(20:41):
certainly pacing to be one of thethe all time great to you know,
I think about uh, a guylike Mike Pegeze in terms of big guys
and for for my generation, certainlyhe can walk on Main Street and walk
in any restaurant he wants the restof his life and get a free meal.
You know, Devon Sadler came aroundas a point guard and a guard,
but in terms of a guy withthe size of yourself, there hasn't

(21:03):
really been one that that could leadto the top of the record books.
So quite like yourself, do youthink about your legacy here at Delaware and
how you want to be remembered. It's definitely something well to start hopefully get
at ale more teamship to that. But you know, it's definitely something I
think I'll look back on and havea lot of pride in. You know.
Right now, it's not something thatreally think about, you know,
a lot of like the good gamesI have or bad games I have,

(21:25):
I don't think I really get achance to like really soak it all in
as some others may be able toso me and I'm done playing, I
think I'll definitely be able to,you know, look back and be amazed
and really take it all in.Well, we look forward to lots more
of these games at the University ofDelaware, and I want to I want
to tell a story real quick aboutJai Air And I shared this on social

(21:45):
media to my tens of followers onTwitter last summer. But my son Ryan
went to Martin Inglesby's basketball camp quickplug Martin Englesbe's camps dot com ages six
to sixteen. You should be there, Absolutely a great camp. But my
son Ryan is six years old andhe walks into the gym and he's nervous,
and there's a hundred kids running around, and he comes to me and

(22:07):
he says, you know, he'snot sure if he wants to be there
or not, because it's tough beinga six year old and seeing a ten
year age of a range of agewhen you're out there. And he's such
a fan of you. He hasa poster of Jay R. Davis in
his room and he saw you there. I introduced you to Ryan. You
saw him, and then without anyoneprompting or asking, you saw kind of

(22:32):
that he was nervous, and youwent over a hundred other kids in the
room and you played basketball with Ryanand you shot around with him. And
I'm getting emotional just thinking about thedifference you made in his week and his
ability to go to camp. Youknow you are an amazing basketball player,
but that moment I was a fanof you way more than anything you've ever
done on the court. You arean amazing person and I gotta appreciate you

(22:55):
and say thank you. Just youmade his his summer, that's for sure.
I wanted to make sure I sharedthat story. You are an incredible
person. I want to end withfive fun questions, as we usually do.
Jy R. Davis with us.You played USA basketball. You played
with guys like Zion and Jalen Green, James Wiseman. I think Jalen Sugs
was in the mix. What guyat a young age in high school,

(23:18):
did you think, Yeah, thisthis guy's this guy's pretty good pressed.
This might surprise people, but actually, Michael Porter Jr. I was so
like a USA There's like an olderage group in a younger age group at
the same time. So I thinkI was like you sixteen or you fifteen,
and he was you eighteen, aboutto go to a senior year,
and he was just a lot betterthan everybody. He's got a ring now,

(23:40):
so you have you have good judgment. I know you're a big Eagles
fan. Jason Kelsey retired today. You doing okay? Right? You're okay?
I mean, man, Philly's fanslost Kelsey and Dollar Dog knighte within
within a week's time. That stuff. You know you are a Delaware and
give me a sell a sales point. Somebody wants to visit Delaware. What's
the give me some points on thebest parts of Delaware. Let's go,

(24:03):
no taxis each I love it,good good stuff. Hey, we talked
about twenty twenty two. You hadsome blonde in your hair that year.
Any chance for getting any any diefor good luck. I actually want to
go all back black, so yeah, no doubt. And then lastly,
Jay Air, appreciate talking with youheading down to DC. What's gonna take

(24:25):
to wins the ball games down there? I think you just need to outcompete
everybody. You know, we can'tcontrol our shots going as a nature of
basketball, Day said, you know, shots will go in, shots will
go in. But I think ifwe can find a way to just play
harder and one of more other teams, we can live with the result.
All right, Gyre Davis, everybody, thanks so much for that's gay R
Davis to take a time out.We come back Martin engelsb will be back

with jaire Davis. Now we're talkingwith our head coach, Martin Nagles me.
Martin, thanks for joining. Thankyou, good to be back.
Yes, that's too hard act tofollow, right, that's right, pretty
impressive. Yeah, you got goodfor me, that's for sure. JJ.
We talked to him in the firstsegment and just a great addition to
this staff. He's been fabulous. You know, I've known JJ for a

(27:02):
little while. I think we toldthe story about he actually came and tried
out for our team a couple ofyears back as a walk on, and
you know, just got to knowhim over the years. Super impressed with
who he is as a person,as a coach, and you know,
he's been a great addition to ourprogram. He sure has. And we're
going to use this segment Martin totalk a little bit about heading down to
the CAAA tournament down to DC whereyou cut down the nets just a couple

(27:23):
of seasons ago. And while wedon't know our opponent yet, we'll wait
for the winner of Elon versus Hampton. There is potentially playing a team that
would be confident in knowing that they'vethey've got a victory over you before in
Elon lost on the road on Februaryfifteenth. Since then, and we talked
about a little bit in the pregameshow against Stony Brook. Didn't have it

(27:45):
implemented in that game, but Iknow you guys have been working on some
zone offense and without giving away youknow exactly the play calling. What are
the key points of the attack thatyou've been reiterating with your team. Yeah,
I mean, honestly, the mostimportant thing for us took yesterday off
and just getting back on the basketballcourt to be able to find that cohesiveness
and find the joy in playing basketball. I think that's how we've kind of

(28:07):
handled the week leading into the conferencetournament. You know, we're not going
to overanalyze playing against zone. Ithink we know we need to be a
little better, execute a little better, and I think it starts with like
being great on the defensive end tobe able to get out some transition opportunities,
and then you know, have somedifferent looks and tweaks and emphasize a
couple of things. You know, with our personnel and with our combination of

(28:30):
players on the floor and stuff,so you know, we got guys that
can make some shots against I thinkagainst the zone you gotta have to You're
gonna have to make some threes, but you also have to be able to
make them work on the defensive endand make the right class hit the high
post, hit the short corner, get on the offensive backboard, get to
the foul line. So you know, we got guys that are confident offensive
players that have missed shots lately.I do think the law of averages and

(28:52):
the basketball guys hopefully will turn inour favor as we head down to DC.
But we'll evaluate who we play onFriday at six thirties, right,
we'll prepare, you know, latenight tip on Saturday. You guys have
played well away from the Bob CarpenterCenter this season, ten wins away from
home this year. How how doesthat experience maybe play into or be a
benefit for you guys playing on aneutral court. Yeah, I mean I

(29:14):
think our groups, you know,we've been battle tested. We played away
from our building. Obviously, wewent away from our building. We wont
a neutral court against Rhode Island.Again. I think this week of preparation
is all about kind of getting backto fundamentals and the basics and the practice
plan. I think it had practicedeighty three of the year. I scribbled
it out and I was practice one. This is a whole new season for
us. This is all that matters. I look at it like a boot
camp for us to be able toprepare to win a game on Saturday.

(29:36):
So there's a lot of things thatwe can get better at, a lot
of things that we need to beable to get better at to win four
games in four days. We're notjust going down there and try to win
a couple. I mean we're goingdown there will win four games in four
days to be able to compete fora championship. And you know, I
think our guys have their intennas up, they're ready to go, and we
had a good workout today. Tomorrowis going to be a really high intense
practice and got to be able toplay against some and play against some man.

(29:57):
You know, our preparations arts reallystarted today. But you know,
we'll really get after it tomorrow. And as we go down to d C
later on in the week, we'llwe'll talk, we'll learn who won the
postseason accolades, and not to todive in on exactly who was on your
list, as that the coaches youget to vote, but who are some
guys that that stood out this yearthat you think as we talk about all

(30:18):
conference selections. I know we gotone in the room that I spoke with
earlier, but who are some guyson other teams that stood out to you?
Yeah, I mean he should be, he'd be top on our list,
but obviously we can't vote for ourselves. You know, I think the
big kid at Charleston obviously they wonthe league, Tyler Thomas at Hofstra,
Tresarian White at UNC Wilmington, thebig kid Amory Williams at Drexel. You

(30:40):
know, when you have fourteen teams, it's hard to get it condense down
to fifteen players or some really reallygood players in our league. But you
know those guys are you know, probably Xander Rice at at MoMath. I
think he led the league in scoring, can really score the basketball. Those
are probably four or five guys thatyou are going to be at the top
of the vote. Hopefully we've gota couple of guys with all conference I'm

(31:00):
thinking all defensive as well. We'llfind out later on in the week,
that's sure. I think the restof is just happy that you don't have
a rookie for the year. Inqualification anymore, because you got a bunch
of those in your eight seasons. Here, we're getting ready to head down
to DC, and you kind oftalked about just to reiterate, like what
needs to happen this year for yourteam for you to go down on Friday

(31:22):
and feel good about how your teamwill play over the weekend. Yeah,
I mean, I think it startswith this group on the defensive end.
I think at times it has achance to be one of the best defensive
teams that we've ever had in ourleague. And we just got to get
back to some basics and habits andbe really disciplined on that end of the
floor and balancing being able to getout and transition offensively and then maybe just

(31:45):
control tempo. You know, theyear that we want it, we kept
every team under sixty points and youknow, get down there, get a
feel for the building on Saturday morning, get some shots up, but really
getting back to like who this teamcan be on the defensive end, whether
we switch stuff, what are ourcoverages, and just kind of being collectively
together on that end of the floor, because that's in championship settings, like

(32:07):
teams that can lock you in anddefend. Those are the teams in advance.
That's how I went down there before. That's for sure. Coach.
This is our last show of theseason. I'll talk to you down in
d C. But I'm gonna sayit as they do every year. I'll
continue to say it until it's nottrue anymore. It is such a joy
to be a part of this basketballprogram and to call games. I can't
say how much I look forward toevery single game and every single broadcast.

(32:30):
And we talk about the staff thatthat's here. You guys take such good
care of me, and it issuch a pleasure being around you. Guys.
I can't thank you enough, butyou're a true pro man. You
make it easy on us and into our blue hen faithful. Thank you

(35:30):
having me coach. You always dosuch a good job meeting and greeting with
all the fans. But before wecome on the air, you always like
to try to time it out untilthe absolute last possible second, just to
make me feel nervous that I'm gonnahave to fill some time up here while
you try to make your way up. This time, you almost did not
make it. That knee, italmost gave out, gave up that up.

(35:51):
Who's in charge here? Because thereneeds to be a step stool down
there. That step is way toodeep. Who's in charge? Where's the
manager? Get somebody yet? Helpme out? Man? This is crazy.
That step is just way too toosteep. You got anything else on
your list of thoughts? Before wetalk about basketball. I don't want to
talk about basketball. I'd like totalk about life. I like to talk

(36:12):
about I'm watching a lot of goodTV shows. You want to talk about
that? What is on your Netflixlist these days? I mean, I
don't want to tell everybody, becausethen every I might get judged a little
bit because I watched some pretty trashystuff. I gotta do something to light
in the mood while I'm watching film. You know. So I was talking
to your father and if anybody isn'taware, he is a man of God

(36:34):
and he is a very highly regardedreverend in the church, and we were
talking about luck, and it reallygave me an insight into Sarah Jenkins and
how you became the unique person youare. Because I said to the pastor,
you know, your daughters do somegood luck. She hasn't had any
any like any like at all, like this year. And his response,

(36:55):
his response to me, though, was you make your own luck. That
Yeah, that was what he says. I guess he doesn't think you're making
good enough lucky. Maybe that's whatyou got to adjust. Yeah, yeah,
he thinks I cursed too much workingon it. You know, I
could attest that that might be apossibility. He thinks I need to stop
cursing. I've limited my words though, Like normally I say a lot of

(37:19):
words every day, now only saya couple. You know, when you've
got the job. Natashay there didsay to you. I heard that make
sure you don't curse in front ofa microphone. That was one of her
sage pieces of advice. And you'vebeen able to do it so far.
It's been very great, very proudof myself. But you might make me
curse today. So the question thatshe asked, I asked you a list
of topics when we were talking aboutthat you did not potentially want to go

(37:44):
deep into. And your response wasbasketball and yes, so don't talk about
that. It's a tough thing onthe Blue Hens Basketball Coaches Show. Oh,
fair enough, all right, Sowe are going to talk a little
bit about what went on this weekendat the MOB. Not this weekend.
We can talk about another week. We'll talk about how about games against Campbell
and Elon, which I know technicallywas this past weekend, but it was

(38:06):
a one point loss on Friday andthen a five point loss on Sunday,
games where in the final possession you'rewithin a single score, down one obviously
in the game against Campbell, andthen down three in that game against Elon
on Sunday. You've got a teamthat we have talked about many times this
year. You're trying to lead themto the edge and try to figure out

(38:29):
how to win and get over thehump in these close games. And they
had some serious learning experiences that wenton this weekend. Kind of walk us
through what went on in the Campbellgame late, what went on in the
Elon game late, and what you'reable to do to kind of to teach
your team from it, you know, the big thing for us, And
again, you know, I'm ina really unique situation because right now my

(38:51):
freshmen are playing better than my upperclassmen, right and that is the reality of
what's going on with our team andwith our program. And so, you
know, freshmen or just in momentsthat they've never been in before, you
know, And I go back tothe Elon game, you know, like
on my space bar, like that'show we cut film. We like press
the space bar. I think thatthe bar, the space they could very

(39:15):
well be broke. But I'm watchingclips and I'm watching it, and you
know, My freshmen are the onesthat are making huge mistakes down the stretch,
but they're in the game in thosemoments, right, And so like
I'll go back and look at Sunday. You know, it was a it
was a one point game where itwas a tie game. My freshmen,
two different ones got scored on andit went from a tie game to a

(39:37):
four point lead, right, Andso they are just in these situations where
they're learning and they're you know,it's a lot of pressure, right,
It's a lot of pressure. Thesegames count. Everybody's watching, you know,
it's senior night. You know,a lot of emotions flying, and
they're just they're still learning how towin in those moments. And you know,

(39:57):
I'm this is hard now, andI'm you know, crying and fussing
and you know, you know allthat stuff right now. But a year
from now, my kids are goingto be so much better from that,
you know, and those freshmen aregoing to be so much better, and
our team is going to be better. You know, Like chemistry is so
important and these guys having the opportunityto stay together and play together. And

(40:19):
it's so true the way you saythat, because I mean, you yelled
at me several times this year. You're talking about silver linings and moral victories.
I know that's not a big partof your mo But when you look
at this team, the Campbell gamein particular, you know it was a
great game for three quarters and thenCampbell makes a run in the beginning of
the fourth quarter, and it culminateswith a ball bouncing off of four different

(40:42):
players, not even their hands.I think one bounced off the back of
a head, then the back ofhis shoulder, It rolls off a leg,
and then it carrives out to nonez. They're campbell point guard, who's
thirty feet away with the shot clockat one. He just picks it up,
throws it at the basket in nothingbut net. And that's about as
deflating a moment you could get.You go down by eleven five minutes to
go, and I looked at Christina, Oh, we could be in trouble

(41:06):
here. You guys battle back. You did not allow Campbell to score again
the rest of the game. Iknow you don't get that final bucket.
I know, at the end ofthe day you're a win loss column person
and you end up on the wrongside of that ledger. But you had
to be proud of the resilience thatteam showed to get back in that game.
I am, and one thing aboutour team like I never walk into

(41:28):
the locker room or to my officewith my staff and go our kids just
didn't play hard. You know,I don't feel like that. I don't
feel like I've had very many momentsthis year where I thought my team quit
and I don't see that in them. I do see an experience. I
do see multiple errors back to backthat we've got to keep working to correct.

(41:49):
But they don't quit and they don'tgive up. You know, we've
had I probably feel like they mayhave quit one game and they may not
have been there to start. No, they may not have even gotten off
the bus. But they don't quit, and that is the thing, and
we've just got to get them tothe point where we minimize, you know,
their errors. That was that gameright before New Year's they thought that
the year was over, they hadalready turned. I don't think they got

(42:13):
off the bus on that game. How About when you look at that freshman
class that you talked about, Imean Gray Sunback Andias sure easy A and
Derriana Howard, they have all improvedin different ways over the course of the
year. Let's start with with Grace, who didn't even get eligible until the
game after that Harvard contest. Wewere just alluding to the first CAAA game
of the year, and you threwit right into the starting lineup, which

(42:36):
I think spoke volumes for what youthink she's capable of and the player she's
going to be. And yeah, there have been some growing pants, but
she has handled it surprisingly well, she is. And now I just wanted
to make a shot if anybody canjust tell her to just make a shot.
But no, they are and youknow, they all are learning,
and they all have gotten thrown intoa fire right And again, you know,

(42:57):
it's not a situation where a lotof time when teams or coaches are
going through rebuilds, you're getting smoked, you know, and you're getting beat
bad. And it's harder for thembecause we're not getting smoked. We're in
every game, and so it's justthat much more pressure to do the right
thing and not to make a mistake. And it's not that they, you
know, as a staff, wereputting pressure on them not to error,

(43:19):
but they feel it because they knowit exists. You know, they know
it exists. They know if theymake a mistake it is detrimental because we're
learning that every possession matters, youknow. I was watching a cartoon with
my three year old son the otherday. Do you watch cartoons a lot?
You look like you watch a lotof cartoons? Do you not?
On my own time? Only onlywith with Julia to the Bluey song,

(43:43):
I can't, I got, Igot them all massive, I got,
I got a pretty good repertoire. But we were watching old school. I
did pick this one, I willconcede. It was Donald Duck and it
was a cartoon where he was floatingaround in a little inflatable and he was
having an argument with a bee becauseit was a cartoon and they're weird,
and the bee starts poking holes inthe float and he would fix it by
plugging it with his finger, andthen he would plug another hole and then

(44:06):
plug another hole. That kind offeels like the way it's gone for you
guys this year, where it seemslike do you do you want me to
run out of this? Do youwant me to run out of here?
Like? What are you trying todo here? Man? I'm plugging holes?
Yeah, like I've got Do youwant me to just run out of
this? I'm to bring it backto a positive spot. Okay, we'll
get to the positive here we go. How have you guys been able to

(44:29):
keep solving these issues and then youknow, have another one crop up?
And yet you see these kids andthey're still buying in and they're still making
the corrections. We're not losing oneway every single time. As you said,
with the rebuild, a lot oftimes you have one or two deficiencies
and they just keep getting exploited overand over again. And you guys are
getting better in multiple areas time andtime again. You think, so it

(44:52):
feels like it maybe we add someaggression to the mean on the turnover front.
This weekend, the turnovers were abysmal. Holy smokes. I you know,
like you said, every game itis something different. But the main
point is the main point, rightand that is we have to learn how
to win, and that is wherewe just keep failing the lesson. Like

(45:13):
I gave them the example the otherday, what time do we go to
commercial? Whenever you want? It'sthe show right now, so I can
just go the whole time. Wegot to pay some bills, but you've
got a couple of minutes, Okay, cool. You know, I gave
them the example of this. Whenyou're in grade school or when you're in
school, you take tests and youhave assignments, and you have tests that

(45:35):
you have to do, and ifyou don't pass the test in the assignments,
you don't pass the grade, right, And I'm like, so what
happens when you don't when you're infirst grade and you don't learn how to
add or subtract or whatever they're teaching, you don't pass the grade. And
right now we are stuck at thesame grade and we're not passing the test,
and we have to keep repeating itover and over and over again,

(45:58):
and we're repeating the same scenarios. The scenarios are the same, right,
the test questions are different, right, And we keep such exactly and we
keep failing. And so, youknow, my message to them at the
end of the game was, youknow, we keep falling the test,
guys, and we're gonna have itagain, and it's how we respond to
the same test, whether we passit or not. Well, you are

(46:21):
going to have two more regular seasontests and then the CIA women's basketball Championship.
The week after that, we're gonnatake a break. We're gonna pay
some of those bills. When wecome back, we'll talk a little bit

you a question, Uh, whydo your kids have so many classes on
Monday nights? What's the deal withthat? It's unbelievable. We tried very
hard to find a player. Thereare insane. They are insane. You
know, we practice Mondays and Wednesdays. We practice at eight am, and
that is disastrous because I'm not amorning person, so me getting up in
the morning is awful. I'm awareI played golf with you in the morning

(48:58):
before. It's not a pretty sightedIt's not good. You have to tell
you the tea time is forty fiveminutes before it actually is to get you
to show up anywhere near the vicinitywhen we're and you still end up coming
out on the third hole. Howabout if you look at at this team
that what you have here coming upin the regular season, it's a trip
down to UNCW, a team thatyou had success against just a couple of

(49:21):
weeks ago, and then another oneof those litmus tests. One of the
best teams in the league to closeit out against Charleston. I know you'd
probably prefer, you know, SaintMary's or the Affirmed every every game on
the schedule, but be a lighttesting your team right before the conference tournament
like that, you know. Andof course, right you always want to
play the tough games. And thething is, you know, every team

(49:43):
that's at the top of our league, we've been in a one or two
possession game with all of these guys, you know, and so you embrace
the opportunity in the moment, andyou know we're it can't do anything but
make us better. So but ifyou see me on the sideline and I'm
like close my eyes and doing this, I'm making myself disappeared. So if
I if anybody sees me doing this, I'm disappearing. So that I'm not

(50:07):
I'm making myself The scary part is, I really do think you might think
you're disappearing. I do. SoI'm like, sometimes if you ask me
questions and I don't know, it'sbecause I disappeared, that's a heck of
a weapon to be able to ignorepeople. Just tell me that you disappeared.

(50:49):
That's how bad right now? Ohdid he lay down on your couch?
No, he just wanted to makeCharles okay. All right, Well that's
it does not sound like that thatThe answer might have been, yes,
were being realiantly honest. What didyou talk to him about though? The
venue? Because have you been downthere before? Yeah? I've been to
a couple Mystics games. Oh that'sright. I forgot yes, just to

(51:09):
see the great Elena dellad down there, that's right. And you are a
DC legend in your own mind, right, No, I'm actually really popular,
like really seriously, Like when theythey're probably going to have to get
a motorcade or something for the buswhen we get down there, because a
lot of people. When they knowI'm on that bus, people are going
to try to get on it.I know, well, you know,

(51:30):
I did a Georgetown game for theBig East this year and I spent half
hour before the game looking for thatbanner that you told me was up there
in the rafters. They had yourname on it. I could not find
it. Know what they did wasthey were painting, so they took it
down when you were there, theywere painting the walls. It'll go back
up? Is that the one up? Is that the one that's hanging on
your wall in your living room?Is that that's the one that you were

(51:52):
able to get from the rafters? What is going to be the thing that
stands out most of you about playingin that venue? And this aaach tip
because this year more than maybe anyother, and it's always been this way
at least a little bit in theCIA on the women's side, but it
feels like there's a lot of goodteams at the top, but there's no

(52:12):
super team that's really separated themselves fromthe field. It feels very wide open,
but it also feels very deep.It feels like almost any team can
beat the other. That is true, and I think you know, one
thing I think that my staff andI have done is we've made it very
clear to our team that we're losinggames about one or two possessions and how

(52:34):
close we are to being at thetop of the league and having a better
record. And so I do believethat our kids they aren't afraid to play
anybody because they know they're capable ofbeating anyone. And so for us,
it's just like, hey, we'regonna press that reset button and we got
one more reset, right is thelast reset of the year, folks,
So press the button. Then let'ssee, we see what we're going to

(52:55):
do. Now you have not mathematicallysecured that opening round by but you're in
really good shape to get it.You know, if you win one,
it is pretty much a formality thatyou will not have to play on that
opening day. And it looks likeright now you'll either be the nine seed
or the ten seed. And it'skind of interesting. I know you don't
like to play this game, butas the idiot media guy, it is
my role to try to figure outwho's going to play who. And you

(53:19):
know, there's in some ways almosta better matchup is you end up as
the ten seed rather than the nine. I try to tell that to yesterday,
and you weren't. You weren't really, yeah, listening to it because
I don't want to be ten,right, I don't want to be ten.
I don't want to be nine.I only want to be one.
Well, you know what, fourgames in DC an opportunity to do it,
opportunity. But you're right, youknow, like the matchups, the

(53:43):
matchups are favorable for us in theten seed. You know, I think,
well, if we get to ten, I think we probably end up
playing Drexel. Who we Oh,I'm sorry, sorry, you figured more
than me or not one who movedit that far away? No, I'm
with that far away. No,my wife is a lawyer. I will
defend myself through her. Literally,I literally you fine, but you're the

(54:07):
one who did. I moved itan inch away from your mouth. You
moved to the foot and half awayfrom it, kept touching my mouth.
But you know, you know,so we could get Drexel, and I
think that's a good matchup for us. Right. We lost to them twice
by a total of four points.Right, so you know we're there and
they and we can get them. And then I think that the next round,

(54:29):
if we were to pass, thatwould be A and T. And
again, A and T is anotherteam we had a double digit lead on
and we just couldn't we couldn't sustain. And so you know again, I
think any matchup we get, weknow we can compete. You know,
it's just are we gonna do thethings that we need to do to secure
the one that sounds good. We'vegot one line segment coming up on the

(57:07):
of the Delaware women's basketball program,Sarah Jenkins, coach. I had the
luxury to watch March Madness with youlast year, and it was right as
the transfer portal has opened up.And if you get the opportunity ever to
watch Sarah Jenkins push refresh on acomputer one hundred and fifty times, no

(57:29):
one is more obsessed with that thingthan you are. It certainly has added
so many wrinkles to your job,Martin's job, everybody in the room that
is a coach in this profession. But it also is something that you have
embraced and really have attacked and isgoing to just be a part of reality.
What is kind of your philosophy withthe transfer portal these days? You

(57:50):
know, I think it changes yearlybased on what you need for your team,
right and right now we need awe need a several positions, but
we leadership is one of the bigthings that we need on the floor,
and so like just kind of targetingthe things that we know we need and
seeing if we can pull that outof the portal and identify some kids that'll
align with them. You and yourstaff do such a good job connecting with

(58:13):
people and obviously that has paid somedividends on the recruiting trip. We've already
seen the freshman class and how talentedthey are this year. You can't go
into specifics with what you're trying toget in terms of individual players with the
rules, but what what kind ofplayers are you looking to bring in from
the high school racks? You know, tough kids. I like tough kids
that just play hard in the competitors, right, and the biggest piece to

(58:35):
that or are they a winner? And we want people that are winners and
know how to win and have beenin moments where they've had to win.
When you look back at this nowyour second I thought you said this was
only two more minutes. You've askedme like five questions answers are not quite
as expansive. I'll talk longer.Okay, you can run out of the
clock on me if you want to. Got to I've got two more for
you. Is your second years asa head coach. Last year everything was

(59:00):
so new. This year you seemso much more comfortable in the role,
albeit you know, not as happywith the results. What's the biggest thing
you've learned over these two years asa head coach? Oh man, I
could give a million lessons, youknow, on what I've learned, you
know, But the biggest thing thatI'm learning now, and it's so hard,

(59:21):
is that every day is a newday, you know, and every
day you have a new opportunity, and you can never stop teaching and learning
and pouring into people, regardless ofthe result the day before. And that's
hard for me because I'll be tryingto hold on. I'm still mad about
the game yesterday Friday, two weeksago, you know. But when you're

(59:42):
in this role and you have thisopportunity to pour into people, your response
in adversity is what they watch andwhat they see. And my team is
looking at how I am responding whenI'm not happy, and how I'm responding
when they're not playing very well right, and so I have. I'm learning
to be an example in moments whenthings aren't going my way, which is

(01:00:05):
hard. It's really hard. Idid lie two other questions real quick.
One just to decide. You know, Scott Glatskins said that he told a
great story about how Jay R.Davis took care of his kids at Martin
Inglesbe's camp. You run a basketballcamp. I notice Scott Klatskin's kids got
a spot in Martin ingles Bee's camp. I asked you about getting my kids
and you said, well, ifto check availability, yeah, I don't

(01:00:27):
know. Yeah, I'll get backto you. Let me check and say
we got We fell out quick. We full talk to your people. I
see how that is. Last thing, can you tell us what these people
mean to you, this fan baseat Delaware and these people especially they come
out to this show weekend week out. I love you guys. You guys
mean the world to me, tous, we are so grateful. I

(01:00:47):
know Martin has said it, butthe both of us are extremely grateful for
your support and your hugs. Andyou're you're gonna be okay and still being
present. And I just want tosay from them of my heart, I
am so grateful as a new headcoach means the world to have consistent support
and to know and to feel thatpeople really genuinely care about you, and

(01:01:09):
I feel that from you guys,So I love you, Thank you,
Thank you so much. It's gonnaget better. We can only go up
from here. Can't say it anybetter than that. We thank all of
you for coming out all year long. Also thanks to to Scott Klatschod who
puts in so much work behind thescenes and getting everything organized and set us

(01:01:30):
