Speaker 2 (00:10):
With your host Voice of Them Delaware Blue.
Speaker 1 (00:13):
Hens, Scott Klatskin, and now welcome to Lacasa Pasta Restaurant
in new Ark.
Speaker 3 (00:20):
It's the Blue Hens Football Coaches Show live from the
Casa Pasta Restaurant and you're listening live right here on
your home for you d Football ninety four to seven
w DSDFM by First Date or thetheed xom Scott Klapskin
and Delaware has started the final month this season with
a twenty four to twenty one victory over tenth ranked
Rhode Island.
Speaker 4 (00:38):
How about that one.
Speaker 3 (00:40):
We'll review that win and we'll look ahead of the
final FCS game ever inside of Delaware Stadium. Plus a
newcomer this year who's making a difference on offense, tight
end Caleb Fourier is here, and a cornerback locking things
down on defense, a Corey Lied is in the.
Speaker 4 (00:55):
Building as well. But first please welcome.
Speaker 3 (00:59):
In the coach of a team that is undefeated at home,
Ryan Carty is here. Everybody, coach, welcome, good crowd tonight,
all to welcome you back. Your coaches did a great
job last last show. They're they're great there. That's a
fun staff. That must be Uh, it must be fun
to go to work every day, work with some of
those guys.
Speaker 4 (01:16):
I was dressed in disguise, I was you were there. Yeah,
how do we do it a great? Have fun? I
had to say chicken parm in the back.
Speaker 3 (01:23):
I thought, I thought, I know, Well it was at Kate's.
So you were at the wrong restaurant. That's why. That's
why you were chick and part was still good. The
crowd was was so little last week. Uh, yeah, you fun.
I think it's to talk to you about Rhode Island.
Uh before the game, but you fought back and now
we get to talk about that that ball game. But
you fought back against Midversity early on, you were able
(01:44):
to regroup. You finished the ball game strong. Uh we'll
get into it. But what do you like about your
team's performance over the Rams?
Speaker 5 (01:51):
Well, yeah, I think the things that you just said.
I think the you know, our ability to to play
really hard for sixty minutes to I think, you know
the thing that you learn about teams and about you know,
just kind of the group of team, the group of
kids that you have, the culture that you have as
the games go on, is you know, how you're gonna
be able to take what you learn from one game
to the next to the next. And I think we've
(02:12):
been really you know, compounding, you know, the the efforts
that we've had throughout the year and getting to that
point where we believe that, you know, if we go
down or if we go up, we're still gonna be
able to finish the game strong and and do what
we want to do toward the end of a game,
which is play clean, play hard, play physical, and finish.
And so you know, the way that we we were
able to finish in three different phases, you know, I thought,
(02:34):
you know, on offense, you know, we had to get
a big third down late, and we did. We had
to hold the ball a little bit and and make
sure that they didn't get a touchdown late, and we did.
And then we had to finish in special teams. We
had to get a pun off against a really you know,
heavy level block and we did and we pin them deep.
And then on defense we had to get one last
stop and we got an interception, and so the way
(02:55):
that we kind of in all three phases got to
stop gotta you know, made sure we kind of closed
the door on a team that was really good and
had five comeback victories throughout the year. It makes you
proud that, you know, I think our guys are really
starting to believe in each other and play for each other,
and it's been fun to be around it. It's really
(03:16):
fun group of guys to coach. You know, we go
out there and practice really hard and have a good
time doing it.
Speaker 6 (03:22):
Well.
Speaker 3 (03:22):
You mentioned that Rhode Island is a really good team,
and I felt like, because this season is unique in
this sense in terms of media attention, like I'm not
introducing you as the coach of the number five rank
Della or Blue Hens or there's not Like if if
this was a typical season, that would have been the
national game of the week, it would have been a
top ten matchup between two teams of battling at the
top of the CAAA. I think because it didn't have
(03:44):
the numbers, or at least we're not paying attention necessarily
to rankings, maybe didn't have the hype to it. And
I think a casual fan. Nobody here today or anybody
listening is certainly knows what's going on. But I think
a casual fan seize Rhode Island and maybe assumes a
rohd Rod Island team from a decade ago. It doesn't
have the same backing as like a.
Speaker 4 (04:03):
New Hampshire or a Wayman Mary.
Speaker 3 (04:05):
But I say all that to get to the point
that that was a really good, top ten ranked football
team that you beat on Saturday.
Speaker 4 (04:12):
I know that was a tough team, oh for sure.
Speaker 5 (04:15):
Yeah, And you know we were trying to shout it
from the rooftops prior to the week. You know, let's
let's make sure we understand who we're playing right this
This team is a very good football team, and our
our student athletes knew that. And I agree. I think
there was maybe maybe some people in the in the
country that didn't necessarily recognize it. But you know, we're
okay flying under the radar. It's kind of it's it's
abnormal for us at the University of Delaware. We're usually
(04:37):
the focal point of everybody, and it seems like we've
been able to kind of just focus on us and
make sure that we go about our business week to
week and and try to go one to know.
Speaker 3 (04:46):
Well, one guy that has not flown under the radar
with with good reason, and we're going to talk more
about him later on.
Speaker 4 (04:51):
I'm to get it out of the.
Speaker 3 (04:51):
Way, get the obvious questions out of the way. Talk
about Marcus Yarns a little bit because he had a
career day, and for him to have a career day,
you know that number is going to be big. One
hundred and seventy four yard rushing for Marcus Yarns on Shouday,
really impressive stuff. Absolutely, I'm gonna talk about more about
Marcus and some accolades that he's gotten in the next segment,
but I want to talk about its touchdown. Now, he
(05:12):
did most of the work, but that direct snap, that
fake high snap, the fake fumbled snap.
Speaker 4 (05:18):
Was that a product of the bye week.
Speaker 3 (05:19):
Was that a design that was put in with some
extra week of planning or was that already in the mix?
Speaker 4 (05:24):
Yeah, it's something that we've run in the past.
Speaker 5 (05:28):
It is actually ran it for a touchdown against William
and Mary in twenty two and it got called back
for an offensive face mask.
Speaker 4 (05:33):
If you recall that was Now that you say it,
I sayway and you know.
Speaker 5 (05:39):
So it's something that we've run in the past and
we try to, you know, kind of dress it up
and do it.
Speaker 4 (05:45):
A little differently each each time we do it.
Speaker 5 (05:47):
And it may have worked extra, extra extra well this
week because we actually fumbled a snap in the first quarter,
so who knows, maybe it was a little extra fake
on purpose.
Speaker 3 (05:57):
Well, it shouldn't fake anyone, because you gotta know, Scout
that brock Gingrick is never gonna grow, never gonna spike
or snap of football that high. Really impressive stuff from Marcus,
and it was a great play. Now you had mentioned
special teams late my color analyst, so Bill Harmon, he
wanted to name Josh Cupid as the player of the game,
and I said, well, Marcus jondran from hundred seventy four yards,
(06:18):
so we got to.
Speaker 4 (06:18):
Have Cole player of the games.
Speaker 3 (06:19):
But it is rare that a punter certainly want in
your system, gets the opportunity to be player of the game.
But boy did he have some really important booming kicks.
A sixty eight yard punt he kicked at five yards
deep out of the end zone, so it went seventy
nine yards in the air. Really impressive stuff. Just tell
me about the importance of Josh Cupid late in that
(06:40):
ball game.
Speaker 5 (06:41):
We did try to get him on the coach a
show tonight. He has class and this is a top
ten education school in the country here, Okay, so we're
gonna go to class when we're supposed to go to
class instead of coming to radio show and getting a
free meal.
Speaker 4 (06:52):
But we can't say enough good things about Josh. I agree.
Speaker 5 (06:58):
You know, we certainly thought he was special things player
of the Week. You know, what he's done all year
has been very, very solid, and you know when we've
asked for him to make a big one, he's made one.
Speaker 4 (07:08):
This game was different. I mean, he was flipping the
field for us.
Speaker 5 (07:11):
I mean it was I felt like an old school
three yards and a cloud to uspe type of coach
all of a sudden, and we were just say, let's
just let's just punt it. Then we'll get like one
hundred yards on it. And he I mean there were
a couple of times where he flipped the field and
then obviously the last one was enormous. You know, we
needed to get that ball off first, and then we
needed to make them drive it as much as we
could and to pin those guys deep on that last
(07:33):
punt was an awesome job by him and by Ethan Saunders,
who's kind of our quarterback of the punt team. He
did an unbelievable job, you know, changing our look and
then re changing it back to something even more max
protect he got that thing off and then josh it
what his job was which to make sure he got
that thing off faster because of that check and it
(07:54):
was just well executed. A really nice job by you know,
coach Demico and coach Linco and then the special teams
coaches to make sure we were prepared for those situations
and then we have to execute him though, and so
that's where the players come in.
Speaker 3 (08:06):
Well, he did a great job on that so offense
special teams and let's talk about that defense of yours
U or I offense. So one scoring drive out of
ten possessions that started in their own territory and they
were helped out by a couple of turnovers and of
course a touchdown on a scoop and score and then
a thirty five yard field with one of the turnovers.
But they lost a dual threat kind of RPO quarterback
(08:28):
early on in the game. What does that do for
the defense when a threat like that is eliminated and
they can kind of pin their ears back a bit.
Speaker 4 (08:35):
Yeah, usually makes it easier than does you know.
Speaker 5 (08:38):
I think that it's certainly though, you know, just like
we talk about it, when somebody goes down on offense,
there's always that period that's hard to all of a sudden,
you've game plan and you've practiced for this one quarterback
and that was a different one, and the same thing
goes on the defense all of a sudden. No shoot,
all of our calls were based on this guy being
the signal caller, and now we have to switch it.
So there is some nuance to that and some you know,
(09:01):
certainly some game planning strategy that goes into it, you know,
in the middle of you know, the game, and so,
you know, I think the biggest thing is, again we
talk more about us and who we are than who
they are, and there's some personnel things that are gonna
have to change, but for the most part, it's you know,
if we're doing what we're supposed to be doing, we're sound,
and we're playing you know, eleven man football running to
(09:24):
the ball, we're gonna be tough to score.
Speaker 4 (09:26):
On regardless of who's playing quarterbacks.
Speaker 3 (09:28):
You have been all season long, and great defense, great
overall team again into eight and one on this season.
Now we talk every week, whether it's Keys the game
or here on the show, about how important turnovers are.
Rhode Island, though, is now six and zero against FCS
opponents when not winning the turnover battle, and they are
one and one when they do win the turnover battle.
Speaker 4 (09:48):
So Rhode Island.
Speaker 3 (09:50):
Would say they don't think your theory is any good
because they won the turnover battle. They lose when they
lose the turnover and they win. So it's opposite Land
up there in Rhode Island.
Speaker 4 (09:59):
Playing with five up in New England. Someway.
Speaker 5 (10:01):
I don't know that's That's definitely not the way that
I would go about it, but yeah, it has been weird.
They did lose the turnover battle, chunk. They turned the
ball over more than any you know, nationally ranked team,
I'll tell you that much. And you know, unfortunately we
only had one. We had it when we needed it
and then we were a team that did not turn
the ball over and we certainly did well.
Speaker 3 (10:21):
It certainly a rarity. We've gone over the stats of
how rare you do turn the ball over. What did
you say to your quarterback? Because he certainly bounced back
super strong and had it had a great day after
a couple of miscus early.
Speaker 5 (10:31):
Yeah, really proud of Nick because I think that's a
product of just growth and maturity and experience. You know,
I think last year he would have probably went in
the tank a little bit longer. You know, we probably
wouldn't be able to pull him out of it, but
you know, he would have went in a little bit longer,
you know, and as any young player would. It's that's tough, man,
when it's your job, and with the amount of emphasis
that we put on the ball and the heart of
our program, to lose it, you know that that's you know,
(10:55):
everybody's looking actually like I did that, and that's tough
to do. It's tough to overcome that, and it takes
me already, it takes confidence, and it takes you know,
the team rallying around him, you know, knowing that, hey man,
we're gonna go get this back, no big deal, all right,
we weren't supposed to do that.
Speaker 4 (11:10):
We all know that.
Speaker 5 (11:12):
Wipe a clean next nap, which is also the biggest
thing that we preach in our in our building as well,
and so I think he just did such a nice
job there, and you know, proud of the way that
he kind of bounced back and just played the next nap.
Speaker 3 (11:24):
Really impressive stuff from your quarterback. And we'll talk more
about that game. We'll talk more about Campbell coming up.
But we'll take our first time out. We come back,
we'll be joined by our first guest of the evening.
Speaker 4 (11:34):

I gotta ask you, how have you enjoyed Delaware so far?
Something different for you?
Speaker 12 (14:58):
Yeah?
Speaker 4 (14:58):
I love it.
Speaker 13 (14:59):
I I said this someone the other day, like, this
is probably the best decision I've made in my football
career so far, just having the opportunity to come in here, compete,
be with great coaches like Coach Carty and Coach Smith,
and really.
Speaker 6 (15:09):
Just a team overall. It's a really close team and
I love it so much.
Speaker 3 (15:12):
Well, we love we love having you, and we're so
glad that you're on the Blue Hens. And we've talked
on this show throughout the season about kind of multiple
quarterbacks playing this season and started with O'Connor and Marko
Manakuchi has been playing as of later. What's it like
for a guy a pass catcher like yourself, a tight
end you do a whole lot more than than those
other wide re series you're blocking it up, but what's
it like to have multiple quarterbacks throughout the years.
Speaker 4 (15:33):
It's a unique situation.
Speaker 13 (15:34):
Yeah, it's definitely different, for sure, But I've been in
that situation before my junior year. We've had a couple quarterbacks,
so I'm kind of used to it by now. You
got to figure out what each quarterback can do. Like
Mark or He's scrambled a lot, so if I'm downfield,
I don't know if he's run running over control, so
I gotta be alert for that. And then the other
two guys, they do a really good job just like
just getting the people the ball and everything. So definitely
(15:56):
just feeling them out through practice and then carrying in
that to the game awesome.
Speaker 3 (16:00):
Well, I know early on in this season, I think
we talked about on the show, but it was the
first time maybe ever that we we could find that
the four tight ends called a pass in a game.
I think that was a Bryant game where four tight
ends all caught a pass. What's it like in that
tight end room because it seems like very unique different
types of roles that each tight end is playing yourself
very different than Elijah, and then Connor comes in and
(16:20):
to help block it and what's it like in the room,
and how do you like the rest of your tight ends?
Speaker 6 (16:26):
Yeah, I love them. They're like some of my best
friends on the team.
Speaker 13 (16:29):
And just to see like them have success too as
long as my with myself, it's really awesome to see.
And then yeah, it's just like throws the ball. Tight ends,
we can catch the ball and we block.
Speaker 6 (16:39):
So that's right.
Speaker 3 (16:40):
Do you do you think that sometimes or do you
think that like the shows and I know on Netflix
there was a show Receivers, right, George Kittle.
Speaker 4 (16:48):
Was in the mix. Do you feel like guys like
Ronka and.
Speaker 3 (16:50):
George Kittle have helped with the the idea that like
tight ends are just supposed to be big guys that
they wear eighty eight and block everybody like you guys
are pass catchers.
Speaker 13 (16:59):
Yeah, for sure, there're have somethinesse that comes with being
a tight end. You gotta because you gotta do it all.
You gotta block a d end. You got to be
able to pass pro with like the like an old lineman.
And then you've also got to be able to get
past the corners and the linebackers like receivers here. So
tight end is a very unique position. In football, and
I think all the sports. So having like guys in
the NFL like Kittle and then Gronk, those are good
(17:19):
guys to look up to me.
Speaker 3 (17:20):
Just role models absolutely, And it was speaking of George Kid.
It was National tight Ends Day not too long ago.
How did you How do you celebrate? I did not
celebrate this year, but it's not a Sunday, so hopefully
next year. That's right, you played games on your Saturdays.
You are unique in the sense that that you you
have to.
Speaker 4 (17:41):
Stop you.
Speaker 3 (17:41):
But but you have type one diabetes and playing with
type one diabetes, how does that affect your practice, your
day to day and and your game days.
Speaker 6 (17:49):
Yeah, it's it's a lot. It's it's hard, for sure,
I will say.
Speaker 13 (17:51):
But there's so much really cool and awesome technology now
like a dex calm, like insulant pumps and everything that
helped me manage it a lot better than just straight
up injections. And then obviously we have a really great
trainer Andie she does a good job helping me. And
then if I am if I'm blush here is a
little too high during practice or low, I will get
pulled out. Just to make sure you know, everything's safe and.
Speaker 4 (18:10):
All well good.
Speaker 3 (18:10):
And I know your mom Kim and your dad Christian,
they do so much for the American Diabetes Association. That's
got to mean a lot to you that did they
help out that great cause?
Speaker 6 (18:18):
No, yeah, for sure.
Speaker 13 (18:19):
So my dad had his radio show up in Boston,
WI and he does like a twenty four hour marathon
every year to support diabetes and everything, and all the
money goes to the American Diabetes Association. So that's really
cool to see you, and it's cool to be a part.
Speaker 4 (18:32):
Of it is really really neat. And you mentioned your father.
Speaker 3 (18:35):
We're talking with Caleb Fourier, tight end with the Blue
Hens this season, first year with the Hens. Touchdown on
the season already and you're one. But your dad, Christian
Fourier is a famous name and NFL guy. He won
a national championship at Colorado, won a super Bowl in
the NFL, in more than one super Bowl in the NFL.
Let me get it right. I think Brendon Thomas, our
(18:57):
sports information director extraordinaire, I believe he had he had
a jersey of of your dad when when he was
growing up.
Speaker 4 (19:05):
So he's a big fan.
Speaker 3 (19:06):
But what's that like for you you're you're growing up
and your dad's in the NFL.
Speaker 6 (19:09):
Yeah, it was cool for sure.
Speaker 13 (19:11):
Just I remember just being around the locker room, him
bringing me in, just being around his friends, the guys
on the team. Uh to Tom Brady, one of my
favorite players and guys. So it's definitely really cool.
Speaker 3 (19:21):
And yeah, do you have a memory, like how old
were you about when when this was going on, when
his career was going on, you were you were young.
You're on the younger side of it.
Speaker 13 (19:32):
Yeah, probably like third grade is really what I camember,
but that was sorts of back in his career.
Speaker 3 (19:36):
Do you have a favorite game you've gone to or
a core memory from a young child going to those games.
Speaker 13 (19:43):
I really just remember going to the Panthers game that
was his last year. We would all go down there
in North Carolina and just have fun. Really just go
to the game, watch my dad play, and they need
to bring me to locker room.
Speaker 3 (19:51):
So that's really all remember that must be pretty neat
great memories. And uh you uh you went to Colorado,
as I mentioned earlier, your dad I went to Colorado
as well, won that national championship.
Speaker 4 (20:03):
How excited are you not?
Speaker 3 (20:05):
Just I won't say, just to play Colorado next season,
but just to help UD move on into the FBS,
the next level where you've spent some time as well.
Speaker 6 (20:14):
Yeah, it'll be exciting for sure, probably super fun. Yeah,
kind of.
Speaker 13 (20:17):
We're just focused on these last two games of the season,
first being Campbell and then Nova, and then we'll cross.
Speaker 6 (20:22):
That bridge when we get there.
Speaker 3 (20:23):
I mentioned Colorado and not only did you come from Colorado,
but Kyrie Hawkins was here last episode when we talked
to the coach is.
Speaker 4 (20:31):
A great guy.
Speaker 3 (20:32):
He did a great interview, but he was on the
Colorado staff in twenty twenty one. What was it like,
must be neat for you to come to Delaware and
both of you and year one seeing some friendly faces.
Speaker 6 (20:41):
Yeah, it was cool.
Speaker 13 (20:42):
He was the scout team guy over there, so I
remember him just yelling at me. You're like to get
my stuff ereight. I try to give the defensive look, but.
Speaker 4 (20:49):
We're like, oh no, this guy's here.
Speaker 6 (20:51):
Yeah. I'm like like, coach hawk Man, like you remember me.
Speaker 4 (20:54):
I hope you do it.
Speaker 13 (20:55):
So, yeah, it was cool to see him on the
staff and everything, and he's a really good guy and
really good coach.
Speaker 3 (20:59):
Well you're not giving them much sit to yell about.
That's for sure. I h let's get you the final
five questions. This was not a planned Usually I have
a few final five questions planned. But seeing you in person,
Caleb just flowing locks. I'm describing it on the rady
who's got the best hair.
Speaker 4 (21:15):
On the team. It's gotta be you.
Speaker 3 (21:17):
It's gotta be you. I mean just I was inspired
to add one. It'll be the final six questions cause
I have five other ones. Your favorite of your dad's teammate,
not they are the best one, but but your favorite
one that maybe you have a memory.
Speaker 13 (21:29):
With I would play probably Teddy Bruski. He's he's my
neighbor at home. He also coached me in high school,
so we're really close with the Bruskies. His son was
in my grade, played high school four together.
Speaker 3 (21:40):
So Teddy, that's pretty neat. Now you wear jersey number twelve?
Is that an olde deady one in particular that your
dad might have played with.
Speaker 4 (21:46):
No, No, it was not a true It was a
Tom Brady reference.
Speaker 3 (21:49):
I took a shot here Jake Thossat in that seat
earlier on in the season, and I asked him about
basketball team if he had to build a three on
three team using Delaware athlete. Who would be on the team.
He said you were one of them. Said he can
knock down the corner three so he got a good
jump shot. So I will ask you. Your sister Cameron,
she plays at Binghamton, So five shots from the corner.
Speaker 4 (22:10):
Who's making more? You were your sister.
Speaker 13 (22:12):
I gotta give it to her every time I go home.
I try to play it in a horse and I
always lose, but she's a shooter.
Speaker 3 (22:18):
Well, we mentioned your dad, your sister Cameron. How about
your sister Kiki, who is a lacrosse team member at
Old Dominion. How competitive are just like board games at
the Fouryer House. I gotta think everybody's an athlete. Everybody's
could beat.
Speaker 13 (22:31):
Yeah, it's very competitive, especially my sisters. There's always like
some hair pulling and all that stuff going on, but
I try to stay out of that. They'll pull my
hair too, But like you know, it's very competitive. We
like to compete against each other.
Speaker 4 (22:42):
And well, lastly you talked about your dad's a radio show.
Speaker 3 (22:46):
He has a podcast, Coach to Win. He just spoke
with Roger Clemens recently. I'm a big Red Sox fan
and Boston fans. I think that's pretty neat. If you
could interview anyone in sports, who would you want to
have a conversation with.
Speaker 6 (22:58):
Probably Gronk. Gronk just funny, funny guy.
Speaker 3 (23:02):
Funny guy, a New England guy and a great tight
end like yourself. Well, I enjoyed talking with you. I
enjoyed at this interview with you. Caleeb Foruria, thank you
so much for being on the show. I appreciate it.
That's Caleb Fouria. Everyone, we'll take a time out. We've

Our head coach Ryan Carty and coach great to talk
with you a little bit more.
Speaker 19 (27:11):
Want to give you.
Speaker 3 (27:12):
Some flowers to start this segment because your team is
eight and one and in a season where every media
question prior to the year was asking about, well, what
motivation do you even have to go out there and
win a football game? Your team is eight and one,
and the last three teams to be eight and one
at Delaware two thousand and three, two thousand and seven,
(27:35):
twenty ten. Do you guys remember those years? Pretty good seasons,
and so really, Imperor and I just want to make
sure that we aren't forgetting like the significance of this
season and just how well you're doing because those things
I mentioned at the top of the show. You're not
ranked number four in the country, you're not right number
(27:56):
five in the country. We're not talking playoffs, So I
don't want to be forgotten that this is a pretty
significant year, and it's a rarity that a team has
been eight and one this far into the season.
Speaker 4 (28:06):
So I'm getting.
Speaker 3 (28:08):
To my question, which was in the beginning of the
season everyone asked you like, well, what do you think
it's going to be, Like, what's the motivation? So now
you know nine ten games, we're at eleven weeks into
the season.
Speaker 4 (28:18):
How has it been.
Speaker 3 (28:19):
Has there been a difference from your end? Certainly there's
been plenty of talk about on our end, but has
there been any difference? What has the fuel been to
this season that's going so well?
Speaker 5 (28:29):
Yeah, there has been a difference, There's no doubt in
The weird thing that I'm gonna say next is probably
certainly counterintuitive and maybe surprising, is that I don't know.
I think it's maybe helped us, you know, kind of
focus on the.
Speaker 4 (28:46):
Week to week and the day to day a little
bit more.
Speaker 5 (28:48):
There's a lot less distractions about what could possibly come next.
Speaker 4 (28:53):
We have a finitem.
Speaker 5 (28:54):
Anytime you have a finite amount of time to do something,
you're probably gonna be able to focus.
Speaker 4 (28:59):
On that time little bit more.
Speaker 5 (29:00):
And we know that we have eleven games, and we
know that we are guaranteed one this weekend, and that's
the one we're focused on right now. And you know,
I think the thing that's been special is that the
people that that chose to be here and do this
with us, the one hundred and six players on our
team right now, and the coaching staff and the support staff.
(29:23):
You know, we all chose to be here, and we're
all chose to work really hard, and we've kind of
bought in and committed to something. And it's not for everybody,
and we know that, and winning is not easy and
we know that too, and so it's been really fun
to be around like minded individuals that really want to
get get down to work and go win. And you know,
(29:44):
it's been a blast. I tell you what, this is
one of the most fun seasons I've ever had coaching.
And it's not just because we're winning, that's a big
part of it. It's because of the work that's been
put in, the you know, the joy that we have
going out and kind of hanging with each other other
as coaches and as players. You know, Tuesday practice and
Wednesday practice, those are not easy practices and we're still
(30:07):
going out there. And it was a little chilly this morning,
you know, and we went out there and had a
great practice and so it's been a lot of fun.
And you know, I can't say enough about how proud
I am of the guys that kind of decided to
make this season as special as they could make it.
And you know, if you went into our locker room
(30:27):
before a game and after a win, you would not
know that there was, you know, a difference in this season.
If anything, it might make it even sweeter.
Speaker 3 (30:35):
Well, it has been sweet to watch. We're having a
whole lot of fun watching. We can tell that your
team is having fun out there as well. But eight
and one, I just wanted to make sure we understood
that it doesn't happen a whole lot that last three
times again the team went to the national championship those seasons.
So I haven't asked you about Ryan O'Connor this season,
and certainly respect his injury and your injury policy and
(30:58):
talking about injuries and all that, so I'm not going
to ask about his status. But we do see him
on the sideline, and it can't be the season that
he envisioned.
Speaker 5 (31:08):
Right.
Speaker 3 (31:09):
You come into a year where you're you're the captain
of the team, one of the captains of the team
and ready for a really big season.
Speaker 4 (31:16):
Start off so well.
Speaker 3 (31:17):
Uh So, without asking you about games or anything else
like that, how.
Speaker 4 (31:21):
Is he doing?
Speaker 3 (31:22):
Because he's a he's a good guy that we've had
on the show before, we've seen him, we care about him.
Speaker 4 (31:26):
We want to know how how well he's doing, and uh.
Speaker 3 (31:29):
Beyond all the stuff on the field, he's got to
be a tough year. It has gone the way that
he wanted it to go, and I just want to
check in on our quarterback.
Speaker 5 (31:36):
Yeah, he's uh, he's he's doing, you know, as well
as you can for somebody who who really wants to
be out there and is frustrated that he can't. And
I think that, you know, the it speaks volumes to
you know, the kind of person that he is, that
he's still able to be, you know, the competitor that
he is, the the leader that he is, you know,
(31:58):
when he has been on the sidelines, which is not easy,
you know. I you know, I think it's hard sometimes
to reconcile that, especially as a young individual that you know,
can you lead the same way if you're not out
there making the plays? And you know, I think it's
something that's a challenge, and he's the right guy for
that kind of challenge. He's just you know, he's very
(32:20):
very positive, very intense, but also uh, you know, kind
hearted and uh I think he's uh, he's one of
those guys that you know, is a joy to have
out there practice and and on and on the sidelines,
and you know, hopefully at some point we'll see him again.
Speaker 3 (32:37):
Well, we're all thinking about him, and it's always a
good to to see him. I wish we've all wanted
to see him out there on the field, of course,
but the other quarterbacks have done a fine job as well.
I want to talk about the one of the guys
that they're handling the ball off to this season, and
that's Marcus Jewnes.
Speaker 4 (32:53):
I told you we'd come back to him.
Speaker 3 (32:54):
I haven't able to talk to you since it was
announced at practice a couple of weeks back because we
had some of your to coaches on last week after
it did happen. But Marcus Jarns has been invited to
play in the one hundredth annual East.
Speaker 4 (33:06):
West Shrine Game. Really cool stuff.
Speaker 3 (33:09):
We've had guys like bal Al Nichols, Zach Kerr, Pat Devlin,
Sidney Hogerbrook.
Speaker 4 (33:13):
Play in the game.
Speaker 3 (33:14):
Uh, some of those guys playing in the NFL for
multiple seasons. What does it mean to Marcus to get
invited and what does it mean for the program as well?
Speaker 5 (33:22):
Yeah, it's pretty what a special special thing for a
special player. And you know, I know you'd have to
ask him what it means to him.
Speaker 4 (33:31):
But I know that you know what it What it
says about.
Speaker 5 (33:34):
Him is that he's he's darn special. And you know,
he's one of the better players in the country. And
you know, we all see it in practice every day,
and we we you know, we see it in offseason workouts.
And you know, I can't say enough good things about
about Marcus because he's a He's also a selfless player.
And you know I've I've coached really good players before,
(33:55):
I've coached, you know, really selfless players. And I've also
coached some guys that you know, would tell you when
they thought they deserve the ball a little bit more.
And you know, for someone who does deserve the ball a.
Speaker 4 (34:04):
Lot, not one time, not one time.
Speaker 5 (34:07):
In the three years that I've coached him, as he
as he asked for it more. And that doesn't mean
I'm not gonna keep giving it to him, but it
does mean that you know that that just speaks volumes
to the kind of teammate that he is, and understanding
that there's a there's a role in everything, and there's
a purpose for everything that we do, and trusting and
believing that the system is going to work, you know,
with you and for you if you go ahead and put.
Speaker 4 (34:26):
The work in.
Speaker 5 (34:27):
And he's really done that, and can't say enough good
things about him, proud of him. You know, hopefully the
best football that he's gonna play is in his future,
hopefully you know, for the next couple of weeks, and
then also you know, obviously in the next couple of years, we.
Speaker 3 (34:41):
Look forward to seeing what he's got left a couple
more in the tank for a Delaware as we end
this season versus Campbell and at Villanova.
Speaker 4 (34:49):
We'll talk about Campbell.
Speaker 3 (34:50):
Another segment before we get out of this segment, though
I know the second segment usually get away from a
game that you.
Speaker 4 (34:55):
Are is so far by the way in the rear
view of.
Speaker 3 (34:58):
Mirror, I know by Wednesday, so thank you, we're talking
about these games that happened on Saturdays. But I gotta
go back to the catch made by Jake though on
the diving play. Not only did he die for it,
he was covered. It was fourth and three he got in.
They reviewed it. It was just such an outstanding play,
made a great throw. Everything kind of went right on
(35:20):
that play. But what's your description of how you would
describe what happened there?
Speaker 4 (35:26):
Yeah, I think it's also worth noting.
Speaker 5 (35:27):
I mean, that's two weeks in a row now that
an unbelievable throw and catch has been made on a
fourth down in the red zone for a touchdown. You know,
we like to overemphasize when fourth down conversions don't work,
we should probably come you know, when they lead to
wins in two tight games, we should probably talk about
that too. And so I think that, you know, obviously
a really impressive operation between the throw and the catch there,
(35:52):
and obviously leaning a lot harder on the catch, what
was a harder thing to do? I mean, Nick through
that thing basically, you know, bucket and said, okay, this
is where this is supposed to go, go get it.
And my lord, the way that he kind of juked
somebody while he was still running the route laid out
made that catch with you know, obviously somebody's arm in
(36:14):
his face and came down with it inbounds and held
onto It was just impressive and so can't say enough
good things about that catch that changed the game.
Speaker 3 (36:23):
How do you make that call though you need three yards?
It's fourth down and a low percentage in terms of
just it was such an amazing grab, of course, but
there are maybe higher percentage I think plays a run
on fourth down and three you go for it all.
What's your thought process in terms of calling that up
on fourth and three significant portion of the game.
Speaker 5 (36:43):
Yeah, you know, it's funny it looked a lot lower
percentage than it was, and obviously the way it worked
out was low percentage. You know, there's some plays out there,
and that's the thing about play calling, right, it doesn't
always work exactly how you wanted to. And there's some
plays out there that you work over and over again
versus a million different defenses. There's ways that that play
could have went a lot more easy end or higher percentage.
(37:06):
And you know, it literally was one of the two
point plays that we've worked well, you know, maybe Caleb
can tell you a hundred times this season and we
just hadn't called it.
Speaker 4 (37:16):
Actually, it's not true.
Speaker 5 (37:18):
We actually called it for a touchdown earlier in the season,
just a different way. Uh, the one Jake caught against
I want to say it was pen you needed a
two point conversion?
Speaker 4 (37:24):
Was it pension?
Speaker 5 (37:27):
Yeah? Yeah, right, that one. Take that out and uh,
it was a different emotion different in this one. You know,
there's a obviously a could have went to Uh it
turned into a low percentage for sure. But I mean
that's the thing is as a matter of confidence, right,
it's not about you know how hard something's going to be.
(37:48):
It's about whether or not you think it's it's gonna work,
and that whether or not you think your guys have
the ability to make those those throws, and a trust
in each other and the repetitions, you know, experience and
repetition is the thing that's going to make that a
little more seamless and a little bit more executable. And
so it's something we've worked a ton. That throw in,
that catch has been worked a ton, and you know,
(38:08):
we gotta have faith and trust that we're gonna make
that play when it comes to us.
Speaker 3 (38:11):
Yeah, is into just a whole nother show or an
hour more of this episode that we can get into
like what we see and then actually what goes into
the in practice and the confidence that you guys have
is or how the play was designed is really it's
neat all of that. But we will we'll take a
break instead because we've got to talk to Corey Liede
and we're all excited to hear from a Corey led
(38:33):
great cornerback on his team, So we want to get
to that. We're gonna talk to you about Campbell and
a little bit, but first we'll take one more time
out here and then when we come back, Corey Light
will be on the program listening to ninety four to
seven w DSD.

of Jersey thus here from previous high schools and every
day that played against So it's definitely feel like home.
Speaker 3 (43:25):
Absolutely, well, we are glad that you are here and
here we're glad that Delaware is your home.
Speaker 4 (43:29):
Here at the collegiate a level.
Speaker 3 (43:30):
You had a big tackle for losshit against Rhode Island,
played so well against ri But I talked about this
or I have on the show previously. Cornerbacks like if
you're doing your job, you have like no stats, there's
nothing in the box score that's good. You're not gonna
get the national accolades for sacks and TFLs and like
you're just locking people down.
Speaker 4 (43:51):
Is that okay?
Speaker 3 (43:52):
That like is that tough to get mentally? Like sometimes
you're not gonna get the accolades because there's no like
locked down defender four times that's not a stat right.
Speaker 24 (44:00):
Yeah, definitely, But like I feel as though as a
corner you still have to remain your technique and everything.
Like one thing like once you feel like you don't
get any action. That's the one day that's when they
gonna throw it at you, and you're gonna be But
I feel, as corny can be told, but like if
you lugging, if you're doing your job and locking the
receiver up, then that means they just don't want to
(44:22):
throw it at.
Speaker 4 (44:22):
You, and they don't.
Speaker 3 (44:24):
They don't throw it your away very much. You're doing
a great job. But here I talked to your position.
Coach Corica Right on the show last week, talked about
his success as a player and a coach coach of
the National Championship game at Clemson. What's been like playing
for coach Right?
Speaker 19 (44:37):
Oh, it's been great.
Speaker 24 (44:38):
Coach Kirico is one of the con He's a great coach,
a great mental also give a lot of great advice,
life lessons and everything.
Speaker 19 (44:45):
He's not.
Speaker 24 (44:45):
He's more than just a coach. He's a great human being.
So playing under him has been great.
Speaker 4 (44:51):
Well, I'm glad that you're enjoining it.
Speaker 3 (44:52):
We were glad that the coach Krika Right was on
the show last week to talk to us a little bit.
How about your room. You got a lot of great
guys in the room. Ty around hair, He's one of
the captains. We talked to Nate Evans on the show.
Kay Shawn Cox's is playing more and more. I know
he was banged up a little bit. But what's you
like in that cornerbacks room.
Speaker 19 (45:08):
It's been great. We all closed.
Speaker 24 (45:09):
We have Tyrone hearing like you mentioned, Nate Evans mentioned, Kayshawn, Kags, Nair,
Dominie Calgo, Will Dan mcconmy and Alex So everybody is
a family in there. Everybody want He tried to get
better and it's a great you want to in there.
Speaker 3 (45:24):
You cornerbacks like to talk a little bit. Who's the
who's the biggest trash talk? I ask all you cornerbacks,
So who talks so much out of that group?
Speaker 19 (45:30):
Oh, it's either between Kayshawn or Nay.
Speaker 4 (45:35):
To be honest with you, the younger guys.
Speaker 19 (45:36):
Yeah, the guys, not the vets that you think.
Speaker 24 (45:40):
Oh, I don't know, to be honest, they just more
they not everybody is a sight and more passinated.
Speaker 19 (45:46):
But they just wanted to talk youthful.
Speaker 3 (45:48):
Xuber about Then we're talking to Corey Line fourteen tackles
on the season two Tackles for Loss. You were a
highly recruited player come out of high school and despite
some injuries that will talk talk about. And I'm sure
you had plenty of choices after a transferred from Wisconsin
putting your name in the port.
Speaker 4 (46:04):
Why was Delaware the right fit for you?
Speaker 24 (46:07):
I feel like I just wanted to come closer the home,
and it was the only school that was really closer
than home too. But into the choice port, it was
kind of hard. It was expecting the unknown, like I
didn't know what was gonna happen. But I feel as
though Delaware it was a great choice. And I knew
a mentor of my Mike Adams, he went here, so
I had a couple.
Speaker 3 (46:30):
Hold for a pause anytime Pops has mentioned any program,
but not only from from New Jersey. But Patterson, you're
a Patterson guy, and so is he right all right?
And so you've talked to him, you've.
Speaker 24 (46:43):
Yes, yes before. While I was in high school, I
used to work out with him and everything. He was
a teach me a lot and everything. But once I
got to college and slowed down a little, but I
still reach out here and there though. Well he's doing
a great job at the Giants too.
Speaker 3 (46:56):
He is a great mentor to have that mentioned fruiting
class at Wisconsin as Miles Burkett, who was the Albany quarterback.
So did you get some bragging rights on your old
TV that gets say hello to him after the game?
Speaker 24 (47:10):
Yeah, I definitely did. Miles a great guy. It was
a great quarterback for the University of over League. When
we came in together, we was great friends and everything.
And I'm actually happy for him. He keeps doing his thing.
Speaker 3 (47:19):
He probably knew not to throw your way. Yeah, during
that game of victory for Dell or over All Many
twenty eight to fourteen. In that one your senior season
of high school, your first game of the year, the
game starts, you get an interception in game number one,
but then later on in the game you tear your
ACL and you're out for the season. Your senior year
of high school. How did that adversity make you stronger
(47:40):
into the man you are today?
Speaker 24 (47:43):
I feel as though, like everybody go through adversity as
part of the life, but like I feel as though,
like me just going through adversity and it was a
big mental thing for me. You have to be mentally
tough through aversity because it was just hard. But I
had to remain positive and mean that I was gonna
be back and because you're gonna play football again.
Speaker 3 (48:03):
Well you were able to do so we're glad that
you did. We're glad it's all working out because you're
a heck of football player here with the Blue Hens.
In your two with Delaware mentioned you went to Wisconsin
became to the final five questions of this segment. They're
known for the cheeseheads right in Wisconsin. What's your favorite cheese.
I'm an American cheese type of gra just standard America.
I love put on a good burger and and you're
(48:24):
all set. You graduated early out of high school. Really
impressive stuff. You stayed up late to complete assignment. You
stayed late after school. How hard was that online calculus
course that you had to finish your graduate It.
Speaker 19 (48:37):
Was absolutely tough.
Speaker 24 (48:38):
But my guys counselor at she actually helped me a
lot with that class.
Speaker 19 (48:44):
But it was definitely hard. Well I got through it
though it.
Speaker 3 (48:46):
Sounds like I could barely say it. It's it's it
sounds so hard, but really impressive stuff. Graduating early from
high school. If you could go up against any wide receiver,
who would you want to challenge? Any wide receiver any where, anytime,
any place.
Speaker 4 (49:01):
Who do you want to go up against?
Speaker 24 (49:03):
Uh, I'll probably say one of my good friends, Jaden Wimbley.
He's at University Hymton right now. I'll probably say him.
That's one of my best the one was he on
the squad last year?
Speaker 4 (49:14):
Yes? He was. Did you get that match up?
Speaker 19 (49:16):
He got it like a couple of times.
Speaker 4 (49:18):
Alright, all right, and I didn't.
Speaker 3 (49:19):
I don't remember that matchup, but I know you want it,
and you want it. H you're from Paris, New Jersey.
You're you're near MetLife Stadium. You mentioned the Giants.
Speaker 2 (49:26):
How how's that mall?
Speaker 4 (49:27):
I've never been to the mall. That the new mall,
the American Dragon.
Speaker 6 (49:30):
Good.
Speaker 24 (49:30):
Yeah, it's good to be It's too big. It's a
big mall. But I only been there just to go
to the games in there. Okay, they got a couple
of games in it. Yeah, it's like the mall of
them Nickelodeon. It was pretty cool. Oh, and that's it.
Speaker 4 (49:44):
That shot I wanted to scout.
Speaker 3 (49:46):
I want to see if I need to take my
kids there at one of these days. And then lastly,
a Corey final game of the season at home final
home game. I'll rephrase that final home game of the season,
taken on cable. How big would it be for this
team to finish off under feeded at home in front
of a great fan base.
Speaker 24 (50:02):
Oh, it's definitely gonna be very special. We look forward
to get a w against Campbell and it's gonna be
a great memory.
Speaker 4 (50:10):
Well, I look forward to it.
Speaker 3 (50:12):
I wish I called you your name more, but they
just don't want to throw the rock your way. And
we'll keep doing what you're doing a Corey Live. Thank
you so much for being on the program. We'll take
one last time out and we've come back. Ryan Carty
and I will talk about the Campbell Campbell's coming up.

Speaker 3 (53:45):
Restaurant in Newark and Welcome back in Lacasa Pasta Restaurant
and New Arcits a Blue Hens Football Coaches show here
on ninety four to seven WDSDFM, one last home game
on the season for Delaware. There undefeated on Tubby Raymond
Field this year, Let's talk about their next opponent with
our head coach Ryan Cardy Campbell coming into town fresh
(54:07):
off of a tough matchup against Richmond. They were up
by seven with five minutes left against Richmond, who.
Speaker 4 (54:14):
Was in first place in the C A A. And
as you're.
Speaker 3 (54:17):
Watching film on that one, what impressed you about their
fight against a really good Spiders team.
Speaker 5 (54:23):
Yeah, I mean, I think you see it as the
year's gone on this team. You know, there's certain ways
to go when you're not winning close games, you know,
I think you can either learn from it and continue
to get better and climbing, or you can go the
other way. And it seems like this team and this
coaching staff has really done a great job at just
kind of playing the next snap and making sure that
(54:44):
they learn from all the mistakes that they've made and
go Because they've played in a bunch of tough one
score games in the CIA They've played one of the
harder schedules in the conference as well, and they're playing
probably their best football right now in the last couple
of weeks.
Speaker 4 (55:00):
So you know we're we're in for a fight for sure.
Speaker 5 (55:03):
Uh it's they're They're very explosive on offense, quarterback and
really run. They have an outstanding a couple of receivers,
but in particular Sincere Brown, and you know we're you know,
we got our work it out.
Speaker 4 (55:18):
For us for sure.
Speaker 3 (55:19):
Chad Mascow was off to a really great start for
Campbell got hurt in that North Carolina A and T contest.
Since then, Mike Chandler has been their quarterback, almost the
reverse of what happened against Rhde Island, where you go
from a scrambling quarterback to more of a pocket passer.
They go from a pocket passer to more of a
scrambling quarterback. But Mike Chandler has done well, but just
a different guy you have to plan for this week
(55:41):
instead of a Mascow who's been out a.
Speaker 4 (55:43):
Couple of weeks. Yeah, it's funny. They hadn't been in our.
Speaker 5 (55:45):
So I usually see the offensive players and while I'm
watching film from other teams, and we see him and crossover,
and so that's when usually I see the offense and
not reasonly like this.
Speaker 4 (55:55):
Week, I haven't watched their offense.
Speaker 5 (55:56):
I watched their offense throughout the year against other teams
wile I'm game planning, and it's funny because I I've
seen this quarterback play the whole time. Then all of
a sudden, I'm reading this other I'm reading the stats
from last week's game, and I'm like, this is not
the kid.
Speaker 4 (56:10):
I was watching.
Speaker 5 (56:10):
I was like, Mike Chandler and I knew that name.
When I saw the second next to it, I was like, man,
I know that name. I don't know where I know
that name from. And I remember recruiting him when I
was at Sam Houston. He's a Texas kid. He went
to Judson High School. And I was like, I know
there's a kid. There's no way it's that kid. And
then it was and I went, you know, we recruited
hi Ount of high School. We didn't end up going
on and we uh you know, but I went and evaluated.
(56:31):
I watched him in his high school uh so athletic.
His tape was outstayed high school tape was outstanding and
then you know, he ended up going to Lamar, I
believe played you know, started a bunch of games at Lamar.
Speaker 4 (56:44):
I think they were doing a lot of the gun.
Speaker 5 (56:45):
Triple stuff, triple option stuff, and he was doing a
really nice job with those guys, and then ended up
at at Campbell, obviously, And so like he's an experienced
football player that's been you know, played at a high
level in in really good FCS conferences. And so again
like he he's a guy that can change a game.
And he snapped and he's got the ball in his hands,
and you know, think about quarterbacks, is he's got the
(57:07):
ball in his hand. It's something we certainly have to
bottle him up.
Speaker 6 (57:11):
And then not a.
Speaker 4 (57:12):
Typical backup quarterback.
Speaker 3 (57:14):
And he's played well for this Campbell team, as you
pointed out, this team better than the record would indicate
in a really tough conference schedule so far. I know
you're thinking about the Campbell's. You're getting rid of the
Campbell's is an odd mascot, by the way, I just
say that, it's odd to say, like you're thinking about
the Campbell's. I just want to throw that out. We
should end it. I wish we didn't have three more minutes,
(57:34):
because that would be just great to send us to credits.
But I know you're getting ready for Campbell. But so
it's hard to kind of think about the historical significance
of the game. But it is a final FCS football
game that will ever be played inside the Delaware Stadium,
and you think about all the history and traditions that
(57:54):
you were a part of as a player and now
as a coach at the FCS. I know you're locked
in to game planning, but can you appreciate the significance
of Saturday being the last of an era of sort?
Speaker 5 (58:07):
Sure, yeah, you know, and it's not something we think
about in the day to day, in the minute to minute,
but you know, when asked to reflect on it, you
can certainly shed that light and change your perspective to
thinking how special that is that we get a chance
to be part of something that's different. And I think
that's again when we talked about how do you play
this year without like that's what it is? It's fun,
(58:27):
this is it's cool to be part of this legacy
and something that's that's changing. You know, the college football
landscape is changing to act like we're not gonna you know,
have fun being in the process of it would be silly, right.
We get a chance to be part of something that's
different and special, and so that's why we all came
to the University of Delaware to be part of something special,
competitive and winning. Regardless of what conference we're playing in,
(58:49):
regardless of what year it is, whether we're playing the
playoffs or not, We're gonna go out there and try
to put a great product on the field because that's
why we came here to play. Speaking of great products,
how about the Delaware field high team today, my little
how about that comeback?
Speaker 4 (59:04):
Vic?
Speaker 5 (59:04):
Do you talk about finishing, talk about learning from I
mean they have like ten to one score losses this
year or something like something crazy like that. Talking about winning,
you know, learning that's just great coaching, outstanding culture. I mean,
that's an outstanding job they did this year to continue
to finish and then obviously get to a point now
where they're playing their best field hockey now.
Speaker 4 (59:22):
So that's awesome. They're doing a great job. And may
may Rolf inspire you your team.
Speaker 3 (59:27):
I know they don't need any extra inspiration, but they
are always in the mix. And yes, nice job of
giving them a shout as well as they advanced in
the NCAA tournament today. Really great stuff, but winning is contagious,
and you've been winning all season long at Delaware.
Speaker 4 (59:42):
Keep it up on Saturday. I appreciate it. You can't
wait see you guys there all right.
Speaker 3 (59:46):
We'll see everybody at Delaware Stadium one last time this
season on Saturday. World coverage at noon with kickoff at
