Speaker 1 (00:01):
You are listening to the Klondike Kates Blue Hens Football
Coaches Show presented by First Date Orthopedix, featuring head coach
Ryan Cardy on ninety four to seven WDSD and iHeartRadio
with your host voice.

Speaker 2 (00:13):
Of the Delaware Blue Hens, Scott.

Speaker 1 (00:15):
Klatskin, and now welcome to Klondike Kates Restaurant and Saloon
at the heart of Main Street and Newark, Delaware.

Speaker 2 (00:22):
It's the final Blue Hens Football Coaches Show of this season,
and we are live from Klondike Kate's Restaurant on Main Street.
You're listening live right now on your home for UD
Football ninety four to seven WDSDFM presented by First State Orthopedics.
I'm Scott Klatskin, and the Blue Hens have protected the
tub this season, ending their home season with the record

(00:42):
of seven to zero after a forty one twenty two
win over Campbell will review that game and look ahead
to the end of an era on Saturday against Villanova.
We'll be excited for that one, folks, I think so.
We'll also hear from two players that have combined to
compete in ninety five games at the University of Delaware,
safety Nick where is here? And so is left guard

(01:03):
Patrick Shop give it up for those two. But first,
welcome in the coach that has led Delaware to back
to back nine win seasons for the first time in
twenty years. Ryan Cardy is here, coach. Pretty good stats
in that opening back to back nine win season seven
and oh at home. Thank you so much for being here.

(01:24):
As we close out this season of episodes of The
Coaches Show, I want to talk about just defending the
tub that the year team has done this year seven
and oh at Delaware Stadium. It's the fifth ever season
with seven regular season home wins. Think about all the
seasons and all the great years Delaware has had, only
the fifth where you get seven wins at home, go undefeated.

(01:44):
What does it mean for your program? What does it
mean for these kids to come out onto that field
with the fans behind them and win every time they
stepped on Toppy Raymond Field.

Speaker 3 (01:53):
Well, obviously it speaks to some comfort level, right that
we have in probably our routine and you know, not
having a step out of it, not having to travel
all those things that do kind of strain you a
little bit. And then obviously it speaks volumes about the
crowds that we have, and the fan base and the
support and the comfort level that we have in our
home stadium because of that as well, and and the

(02:16):
effect that the fans you know, have on those games
as well. And so you know, I think we had
seventeen thousand average or something like that, you know, which
is outstanding for our level and you know, even the
next level and the next conference we'd be going into,
I think that would still rank.

Speaker 2 (02:30):
In the top five.

Speaker 3 (02:31):
And so, you know, really excited about you know, the
home crowds that we had, excited about the performances that
we put in place at home, you know, our home
you know points form points against where we're pretty outstanding
this year. And I think it speaks volumes to you know,
how one our guys are in a routine, we can
kind of hone in on on our fundamentals and our
our you know, the foundational things that we really believe

(02:54):
in and not have to worry about the outside noise.

Speaker 2 (02:57):
Let's talk about that game against Campbell. Felt like you
were in control. There's the score fluctuated a six, seven eleven,
it was five at one point, but it felt like
you guys had control of that game, despite what the
scoreboard was inch and closer at times. Were you pleased
with your team ability to face some adversity and then
pull away at the end. The score was probably what

(03:18):
it felt like at the end, but you had to
work for it down the stretch.

Speaker 3 (03:20):
Yeah, sure, I mean that's that's all part of sports
and football, right like there's There's also been parts of
games I felt like we had in control and then
we ended up losing them.

Speaker 2 (03:27):
And this was a lot better than that the alternative
of losing.

Speaker 3 (03:32):
And so I think what we felt the whole game
was that we kind of had the upper hand. We
made a couple of mistakes here and there on both
sides of the ball and let the team hang around that.

Speaker 2 (03:43):
Probably we probably could have put away.

Speaker 3 (03:46):
A little earlier, and and I think they also made
some plays when they needed to on both sides of
the ball at Campbell. So you know, I think they
came to fight, and I think, you know, it was
a fight, and we ended up winning it pretty good
at the end, but it did take us a minute
to kind of settle in.

Speaker 2 (04:02):
But it was a great finish and a great performance
of by your quarterback Nick Minicuci. He threw for four touchdowns.
He rushed for two. It's the first time since nineteen
ninety four that a quarterback has done. This was a
trivia contest we had online, So there's been some some
talk around the room as to what the trivia question is.
First quarterback since Keith Langan to do it versus west

(04:24):
Chester in nineteen ninety four. Howard Trout in the front
row here won a gift card. There a nice job
by guessing that. One lot of naggy guesses for that.
We've talked about Nick's preparation for the game and how
he gets ready and how all of your quarterback's prepared
to get in and that's what makes him a good quarterback.
But also at the quarterback position, he seems to have

(04:46):
a certain aura or confidence, a little bit of a
swagger out there, and that's important as well to have
that position too. Would you say that's true of Nick?

Speaker 3 (04:53):
I do think that's true of Nick. I think he
certainly has a confidence level. You know, confidences. You know,
when it's baseless, it's it's pretty silly. And when it's
when it's based in you know, uh, athleticism, toughness, preparation,
you know, practice and and talent level. Then all of
a sudden, it's it's something that can really propel you

(05:14):
to becoming great as opposed to just solid. And I
think he's starting to really even grow in confidence as
the guys around him have really grown confident in him.

Speaker 2 (05:24):
I think that really helps for a quarterback.

Speaker 3 (05:26):
I know it's you know, from playing that position, it's
one of the it's a lonely position when you're not
doing really well, you know. And so when when you
when you're a young guy and you're you're in your
first couple of starts, it's really nice to have the
guys around you really support you, believe in you, and
uh and make plays around you so that you feel comfortable.
And then you know, the talent level usually does take
over when you.

Speaker 2 (05:46):
Have it, and he has just that he threw four
touchdowns in a game. Quarterbacks have thrown four touchdowns in
a game seventeen times in Delaware history. Eight of them
have occurred in the last three seasons. So I mean unbelievable.
You have coached two percent of Delaware football games, but
forty seven percent of the four touchdown games from quarterbacks

(06:08):
have come under your regime. And so I want to
lead into do you take pride in that in kind
of putting your own stamp, your own brand on Delaware football.
I see, for like every week there's a new record
that we're talking about, or this player is at the
top of first time since and you seem to be
just getting all the way through the record book with
guys at the top of the list, certainly offensively. Is

(06:31):
that something that you take pride in and kind of
you know, this is a new mark for Delaware football.

Speaker 3 (06:36):
I think it's pretty cool, you know, but it's not
really what you know. I think said this on the
zoom call we had earlier with the rest of the media.
You know, the traditions of Delaware football is winning, you know,
And so that's what I want to do, and that's
the tradition I want to uphold. That's the legacy I
want cemented here under the whatever this era of football

(06:57):
is that that I'm coaching. However we do that, I
mean football cyclical, right, like I'm a passing guy kind
of was, but shoot, and we've run for two hundred
yards maybe three or four times this year and three
hundred and twice I think, so, you know, we have
the ability to be balanced and to do what the
defense gives us and then what the flow of the
game dictates at times. And so you know it, it

(07:19):
is something that that we're good at and we believe
in and that we work really hard at. I mean,
the amount of repetitions and game planning and you know
practice that we do in the past game is so
that we can do that when we need to and
so that we can make the big plays and explosive
plays in the past game that really do lead to
touchdowns and lead to you know, the points getting a

(07:40):
little pulling away from teams that you should pull away from.
It's harder to do and it's easier to keep games
close when you don't have those explosives in the past game.
And then we also talk about, you know, creating explosives
in the run game, and we don't you know, we
don't recruit running backs so that they get three yards
in a cloud at us. That's not really who we are.
We want guys that are going to go ahead and
create explosive plays because that's going to give us the

(08:01):
statistical reasons to keep giving them the ball. Otherwise, we're
not going to win as many games if we just
get four yards per play. It's not how it works
in football in particular in this day and age.

Speaker 2 (08:10):
There's plenty of records that have been shattered with the
Marcus Yarns and talking explosive plays on the ground as well.
Let's flip the defense a little bit because two explosive
plays on the other side of the football happened against
Camp which kind of wanna get your thoughts on that
seventy five yards on the screen pass and then sixty
scheex yard pass of VJ. Wilkins on the Assippi was
the recipient of both of those. Where did coach see

(08:33):
the breakdown on those plays?

Speaker 3 (08:35):
Yeah, it was really in communication and I discipline in
those two respective plays. The first one was a communication error.
It was a formational check that we just didn't bump
out on and had you know, again, we were there.
We just missed it by a hair and when you
miss something by a hair and his own defense, all
of a sudden it could pop. And then in the

(08:56):
past one it was just an eye discipline operation. You know,
somebody knew what we were going to be in and
ran a play to beat it, and they did, you know,
And you know, you'd love to say that we're not
going to give that up at times, and sometimes you do,
and you know, they did a nice job designing that
and executing it. But obviously, you know, without those couple
of plays, I mean, it's like they almost had no yards.

(09:18):
And so you know, hopefully we can continue to shure
up those those big plays and the explosives. I mean,
it's really just a matter of communication, discipline, you know,
and you know, obviously execution.

Speaker 2 (09:30):
And the defense was able to buckle down as they
always have. It's about a seventy thirty split in terms
of opponent scoring in the first half in the second
half against your defense this year, only fourteen points have
been allowed in the third quarter actually all season by
your defense. You guys preach finishing, and I was impressed
earlier when you kind of described how you can actively

(09:51):
teach holding onto the football and because I said, well,
you can just say not, I don't want to funel
the football, and then you kind of describe, but you
can also actively try to hold onto the football as well.
So how do you as a coaching staff actually like
actively coach finishing ball games because your team does so
well at it.

Speaker 3 (10:08):
Yeah, that's a great question, because you know, we try
to bring our core values to life. In order to
do that, we have to practice them, and you know,
we teach you know, relentlessness in a different way as well.
And then in finish, there's a couple of things. I mean, one,
I think our you know, sports science department does such
a great job. In our sports science and analytics department,
and our strength trainer, you know, Chris Stewart and all

(10:31):
those guys together also give us the opportunity to be
the best conditioned team in the country as well. And
so we are, you know, the way that we practice,
the repetitions that we get, the way that we set
up the work week is so that we're playing as
fast in week eleven and as if we played in
week one. Is so that we have less injuries in
week eleven and we have more people that we can
we can substitute in and get those repetitions during practice

(10:53):
so that they're ready to go if somebody does get hurt.
I think that helps you finish games. It helps you
finish seasons for sure. And then for the most part,
and this is the thing that sometimes the guys don't like,
it's it's about all year round. I mean, we preach
finishing in it's a it's a core you know word
in our fundamental dictionary that we grade people on in

(11:14):
every aspect of football, and outside of football, we grade
people on finish and strain and finish is basically how
we work our whole offseason workouts around and we hold
people accountable to it. And so if we're not finishing
outside of football, if we're not finishing in the weight room,
if we're not finishing in the classroom, if we're not
finishing you know, in our meeting rooms, then we're going
to talk about it because it's all going to show

(11:35):
up on Saturday. And I think that's what the kids
have bought into so much, the student athletes have bought
into so much this year, is that understanding the cumulative
nature of winning a football game in November is not
about what you did in November, you know, It's about
what you did in April and March and February.

Speaker 2 (11:51):
And last summer and then this summer.

Speaker 3 (11:52):
You know that we just had all the way leading up,
and did we learn from the things that we that
we didn't do well in the first couple of games
and then the fifth game and this seven game.

Speaker 2 (12:00):
That's how you finish a game in week eleven, it's
impressive stuff and certainly practicing what you preach out there
on this football field. And you're gonna have one more
game to finish against Villanova. We'll talk about that in
a little bit before we're going to take a time out.
When we come back, we'll hear from Nick Ware fresh
off in it against Campbell. We're live at Vonda Cakes.

Nick.

Speaker 2 (15:55):
Where is here? Everybody? Nick, thank you for being here,
Thanks for having me. It took four years, but we
did it. We got you on the show, and it
had certainly been well deserved before this. You now have
an interception in each of the last four seasons. Pretty
impressive stuff. It tell us about the most recent one.
Walk us through that play against Campbell.

Speaker 11 (16:15):
Yes, so the most recent play against Campbell. It was
a great scheme by coach Rojas. We were actually in
a man defense, but I was disguised as well, a
man defense to the field and a zone defense also
mixed in a little bit there and actually disguised because
I knew it was a screen and then the minute
the ball was snapped, slid into position and then the

(16:35):
ball actually got tipped me. So it was a little
fortunate there, but definitely a great play and a great
call by coach Rojas.

Speaker 2 (16:41):
For sure, you gotta be in the right spot. It
was confusing just describing, and I can't imagine going up
against it as as a quarterback, trying to figure out
what you guys are doing so many multiple looks. How
difficult is it for a guy playing in that defense
to just know where to be with so many different
looks out there on the field. It's certainly confusing for
your opponents.

Speaker 11 (16:57):
Yes, there's definitely a lot of moving parts to our defense.
It can be confusing. At times. That's why kind of
like coach Cardy said, just making sure that we finished
that were focused at all times, being locked in with meetings.
I think that definitely a's and helps to you know,
our awareness on the field and also just our game
speed as well. Like I said, just stay focused and
staying locked in would definitely allow you to play faster

(17:20):
and allowed me to make plays kind of like I
did on.

Speaker 2 (17:22):
The field where you've been making plays for a long time.
I was telling you I remember your first one because
you were up in Maine and it was still COVID.
It was the fall of twenty twenty one, and so
I called that game from the studio. So I was
watching it on the screen and as soon as you
picked it off, they changed camera angles and I didn't
know where the ball was, so I had no idea,
but you you had it. And do you remember your

(17:43):
first one? Yes, definitely. Still you have a memento from
that game?

Speaker 11 (17:46):
Yes, Oh so that that was actually that was actually
an over and thrown ball from that game. It was
an interesting night up there in Maine. It was it
was September and it was actually still about like sixty
degrees a nice main.

Speaker 2 (17:59):
Yeah, yeah, main day.

Speaker 11 (18:00):
I thought it was gonna be a little cold there,
but but yeah, that was that was I was excited
to get that interception.

Speaker 2 (18:06):
First interception of my career.

Speaker 11 (18:07):
Actually started the game ball, you know, posted in my room,
so definitely a memory of mine for sure.

Speaker 2 (18:13):
Well good Stuf, I know who didn't get a game
ball on Saturday. That was their quarterback, their their wide
receiver Brown who came into the game with about nine
hundred and fifty total yards on receiving. Jason Scott, who
will talk about it in a moment. He said a
postgame that you guys were keen on not allowing him
to get a thousand versus Delaware. You don't want to
go over a thousand. That was something you guys talked
about pregame.

Speaker 11 (18:32):
Yes, for sure, all of the dbs we got together
and we came to a mutual decision that this was
gonna be one of our best games that we played.
And we knew kind of like you said, that he
needs to get a thousand yards. So we made that
a challenge and we stepped up to that challenge that
you know, did our best to prevent him from doing that.

Speaker 2 (18:50):
A great player, but we had we had to show
up that day. Yeah, he can get against somebody else now.
And we talk about Jason Scott, but a former high
school teammate of yours. How nice had have been to
have Jason Scott around, And I know you probably helped
get him to to take a look at Delaware to
begin with.

Speaker 10 (19:06):
Yes, it's been a pleasure.

Speaker 11 (19:07):
Jason Scott is a close friend of mine, great teammate,
great guy in general, you know, kind of like you said,
we played high school together, had a lot of great
memories there. He's a you know, physical safety, smart guy,
smart football player as well. So it's definitely, you know,
been a pleasure of playing and you know, having him
as my teammate and also just going along the journey

(19:28):
with all the other guys as well, and the coaching
staff too.

Speaker 2 (19:30):
It's really been a fun year. I can't imagine in
high school you two on the same team. The quarterbacks
probably never threw the football against you guys at our
lady good counsel back in the day talk with Nick
where sixteen career passes defended, And it'll be your fifty
second career game coming up on Saturday. You will tie
Matt Marcarell and Rick Levell for tenth most in school
history in terms of games played at DELA. What does

(19:53):
that mean to you to know you've had the longevity
here with the Hens.

Speaker 11 (19:56):
It means everything in the world to me. I've been
blessed to be in the this and that down'm in
right now, also by coach Cardy, just the coaching staff
that recruited me as well, and also just being around
my teammates and just having an opportunity to show my
guy given talents and be here at Delaware is really
really man a lot to me over the past four years.

Speaker 2 (20:16):
Well, because you've been here quite some time. You are
one of the few on this team that played at
Villanova your freshman season. When you gotta win at Villanova,
describe what that feeling is like to beat the Wildcats.

Speaker 11 (20:27):
Oh, my goodness, it was one of the best feelings
in the world, especially, you know, just knowing the rivalry,
knowing the magnitude of it, knowing that these wins don't
come easy.

Speaker 2 (20:36):
No wins come easy, actually, and I'm looking to just
repeat that.

Speaker 11 (20:40):
And also just you know, to go up there and
have one last final great moment with the guys and
one last win with the guys.

Speaker 2 (20:47):
Well, we are looking forward to that the Villanova win.
You've had playoff wins, trips to South Dakota and Montana,
time with teammates, wins at the tub. What will you
remember about your career? Maybe most here at Delaware.

Speaker 11 (21:00):
The most I remember about my career here is just
the genuine connections that I've built, whether that's with other players,
the staff, you know, other athletes. I really am a
networking person and a people's person, So I really do
chairs the friendships, the relationships that I made, and I
really do think those are sorry, those are going to

(21:20):
take me a long way and that they can also
go a long way as well. So I would definitely
say that's what I'm gonna remember out of my experience here.

Speaker 2 (21:28):
Well, we are glad that you have one more game
to get a w against the Villanova. Let's get you
the final five questions. Uh slagh bar is here. We
had some some Christmas decorations all around here at clon Kates.
Take me back to your childhood. What was a favorite
or memorable present that you got as a child. One
that stands out.

Speaker 11 (21:46):
So one memorable president that I got was actually a
buzz lie your costume when I was I think I
was about three or four years old.

Speaker 2 (21:54):
I saw that and was ecstatic to get it. I
actually Woren on Halloween.

Speaker 11 (21:58):
I got a few photos of that, so that was definitely,
I would say one of my favorite presidence for sure.

Speaker 2 (22:04):
Great great film you played. I mentioned Our Lady of
Good Counsel. You played in the very challenging w c
AC Football Conference. Some really good players who have played there,
some maybe even some top picks. Who's the best player
that you've ever played against?

Speaker 10 (22:18):
Well, that's a good question, Scott.

Speaker 11 (22:21):
I would say the best player that I've played against
was Marshaun Lloyd out of the Matha. I think he's
currently with the Packers now. He's a running back that has,
you know, pretty much.

Speaker 2 (22:31):
The whole build.

Speaker 11 (22:32):
He's strong, he's fast, he's elusive, can hurtle people, he's
you know, great pass blocker. I would definitely say he's
the best athlete and probably one of the best players.

Speaker 12 (22:43):
That I played.

Speaker 2 (22:43):
You're up here being very humble. Did you have an
interception against a very famous football player?

Speaker 11 (22:48):
Yes, actually it was against Gonzaga Caleb Williams. My senior
year played them, and it was fortunate enough to get
an interception, you know kind of you know, kind of
walk off with that a little bit.

Speaker 2 (22:58):
Pretty impressive, STUF. Thank you for Brendon Top who slid
me that note during the interview. You're from Montgomery Village, Maryland,
about thirty miles from Baltimore, about twenty miles from DC.
Did you go Ravens or Commanders growing up? Or a
separate favorite team?

Absolutely, and they get it back this year. What the
defense need to do to bring that trophy home?

Guest speakers will be quarterbacks coach Corico Wright and former
Blue Hens quarterback Bill Zwan will be there as well.
MVPs this week Play Sparks on offense, Jas Scott on defense,
and Ethan Saunders on special teams. We're back here with

(27:38):
our head coach Ryan Carty and coach nine to one season,
back to back nine win seasons. As I said, for
the first time since two thousand and three two thousand
and four, it's only the second time Dellars had back
to back nine win seasons since nineteen ninety three. Really
impressive stuff on the season. Of course, Saturday is the
final game of the season. Is there any part of

(27:58):
you or any thought that has gone on that there
things like, hey, that would have been pretty neat to
to try to make a run this year. We had
a really talented team. And does any part of you think, man,
this would have been fun to to be able to
keep this thing going and give it a shot in
the playoffs.

Speaker 3 (28:14):
I certainly you know there it would be fun. You know,
there's no doubt about that. It's not really our focus
right now. You know, we haven't really I mean, I
haven't given it much thought. Yeah, but uh, you know
I think we've that decision was made quite some time ago,
so you know, I've I haven't been really living in.

Speaker 2 (28:30):
It for anywhere in the back of your mind, Like, man,
we this could have been this could have been a
good run. Now, I'm sure we would have a good run.

Speaker 17 (28:37):
You know.

Speaker 3 (28:37):
I I wouldn't want to play us right now, that's
if I was in the playoffs. But I also you know,
I know that you know, we're doing, uh something pretty
special here and you know, trying to take this thing
one game at a time, and you know, we have
the opportunity this week to to do what we've kind
of been, uh, you know, working toward for a long
time now, which is playing Villanova in a championship game.

Speaker 2 (28:59):
And you know, for us, this is our this is
our championship game. Yeah. I think some you know, and
you guys are so focused week weekend and week out
about who's on the schedule. Right here, we're focused on
A and T, then we're focused on Penns Sacred Heart
down the line until you get to Villanova. Then you'll
focus on Villanova. There is a reality that some fans
this year came in with the mentality of like, and

(29:20):
I've heard this many times, of can't make the playoffs. Yeah,
but at least there's Villanova. We still have that Villanova game,
and it is for a lot of fans, this is
the super Bowl for Delaware this season. Is it's that
final game of the season. And obviously Delaware doesn't matter
for the twenty twenty four team, but there are previous
teams dating way back that have struggled to beat Villanova

(29:42):
in this rival rematchup, so that is out there that lives,
that exists.

Speaker 3 (29:47):
How is it addressed with the team, the fact that
the Villanova game overall, yeah, the villain, Like, how does it.

Speaker 2 (29:54):
Yeah, not necessarily the streak of lossuits or anything like that,
but just in general, like, look, this is a big game,
but the goal of any week is to practice and
do everything. Yeah, the same each week, big game or bigger.
But how is it maybe discussed with the team? Yeah?
For sure.

Speaker 3 (30:10):
You know, I think most seasons is actually probably a
little bit more difficult to kind of go one game
at a time because we have that playoff possibility and
there's a lot of talk about, oh, you know, we
got to have this rank what's our ranking this week?

Speaker 2 (30:22):
Mondays and Tuesdays.

Speaker 3 (30:22):
Everybody's trying to figure out where you land, and oh
my god, they ranked that team ahead of us. What
are we like not of I don't even know what
the rankings say, right and I literally couldn't tell you
who the top five teams of the country are. And so,
you know, we don't have that that distraction right now
of playoffs and what seed are we going to be
and all that stuff, and so I don't think it's
really crept into our minds as much as it probably

(30:43):
has the fans, which I understand, it's something to look
forward to. For us, what's to look forward to is
another day to practice with each other, another day to
play with each other, another Saturday that we get a
chance to put the pads on and go play for
each other. And I think that's the big thing is
like we were, you know, a lot of talk prior
to this season. My goodness of the amount of times
I had to answer like, but you're not playing for anything.
I mean, I don't believe that. I didn't believe it

(31:05):
then and I don't believe it now. We're playing for
each other. We're playing for the to honor the work
that we'd put in for the last five years, some
people in this room the last three years, the last
fifteen weeks at least, right, we put in a ton
of work since August and prior to that. Obviously, that's
what we're honoring. That's what we're playing for. We're playing
to play really hard.

Speaker 2 (31:25):
And I'm gonna go backwards a little bit. Very well
said about that the game come up with Villaneov. I'm
gonna go backwards a little bit because I do want
to talk about Senior Day and touch on that because
twenty two seniors were honored on Saturday, and some using
COVID math that can come back, and so maybe really
have lost all eligibility only a couple I think by

(31:46):
my math, I could come back next year. Those are
conversations you'll have after the season and we'll find out then.
But you know, a little different than it used to
be when we look at the roster makeup there. Used
to be like you'd go into somebody's living room and say,
I'm gonna take care of your sun for the next
four or five years and I'm gonna watch them grow
into a man. And now it's kind of like you
shoot a text message to somebody in they're there a

(32:07):
couple months later through the transfer portal. I mean, it
has Senior Day evolved in that way to make it
a little bit different than than it has been in
the past.

Speaker 3 (32:13):
Well, I mean we're still doing it the same way.
I do feel like there's possibly a little difference in
the feeling of it, you know, I understandably some of
those student athletes have been on the team for less
than a year in they're out there on Senior Day,
So that's obviously a different feeling probably than somebody who's
been on the team for five six uh with COVID,
and so there's no doubt it's a little unique now.
But it's still an honor to have put on the

(32:35):
blue and gold. It's still an honor to to be
able to play in the tub, it's still on honor
to to play with each other, and it's still something
that we're gonna play for. Just like last week, you know,
that was still it was still about, you know, the
last time that some of those guys are gonna put
on a blue jersey, And this week is the last
time that some of the guys in that and that team,
in that locker room are going to put on a
Delaware jersey, which you know it matters.

Speaker 2 (32:56):
I want to talk about one of the seniors in particular,
and that's Phil because we talked about different records and
he's on top of another record book list with his
eleventh touchdown, one touchdown away from tying a school record
for most touchdown catches in a season of Pat Walker
had twelve in nineteen sixty nine. Only three players have
had more than eight since Eddie Conte, and so that's

(33:20):
quite some time, and he's doing big things for this team.
We've talked about some of the reasons that he's had success,
but in terms of specific skills, what has allowed him
to have such a breakout season? In your offense, it's
one hundred and thirty five years of do or football, right,
something like that. Yeah, that's I'm telling you. These records
that I say every Wednesday are fantastic and I hope

(33:42):
everyone realizes just how significant all of these records that
you guys are breaking doctor Phil. Yeah, well not what
about him though? That has has allowed him to have
such a Like I asked you in the beginning of
this season, like he's off to a good start, right,
We'll talked about, Hey, what do you like about Phil?
But like, as you look back at the season when
he's done so far, and what has allowed.

Speaker 3 (34:01):
To have such a great season, I think a bunch
of things. I mean, I think you know, he's kind
of built for it for sure. I think you know
the mentality that he has similar to Nick. He's really confident,
he prepares really well. Uh, those guys watch a ton
of extra film, you know, with the quarterbacks as well,
and you know they're they're always trying to be in
the right spots for each other, you know, to make

(34:22):
sure that they have a good feel for it. I
think repetitions is something that you know, he doesn't take
days off. He's been banged, he's he's an old man. Now,
he'd be okay with me saying it, like he's got
knee problems. He's got you know, he's he's got the uh,
the old man problems out there, you know what I mean.
And he's a vet about it. He just he gets
so much treatment. He's always in the training room, you know.

(34:42):
I think a lot of his UH, I have no
idea about that. I'm assuming a lot of his UH
grad classes are online because he's always in the in
the whitney doing something.

Speaker 2 (34:51):
And he's really still really smart.

Speaker 3 (34:52):
So he's he's fine, he's a doctor, he's Docville, you know,
and uh and so I think, you know, that really
plays a big part into it. And then he's really talented.
And I think I do think we can't discount the
amount of experience that he had with the amount of
repid you know, receptions that he had at a different level. Yes,
but that's something when you make plays against people, you

(35:13):
have confidence that you can make plays against people, and
you know, so it's it's not new to him to
go up and get a ball. It's not new to
him to run across the end zone and make somebody
miss like that's not something that's new to phill Ups.

Speaker 2 (35:24):
And so I think that that's part of it.

Speaker 3 (35:26):
And then you have to have the skills that translate
to this level, and he does. He has the length,
he has the speed, and he has the ability to
make every catch and so it's been really fun to
watch his progression and you know him kind of grow
and emerge into something that's shooting maybe the best, most.

Speaker 2 (35:39):
Prolific receiver in the history of Delaware football, which is insane.
You gotta draw one more up for him to get that. Well,
he'd be on the play call list. I'm sure he's
on the He'll get something against philadelaim Man. I don't
want to give anything away to lie Cat, but mean
watch thirteen. I have a feeling phil Leuts is going
to be targeted for sure. So it's up to him
if he wants to go take it into the end zone.
Let's get it done. To your point of the experience,

(36:02):
one of five Division I players Phil Letsays with two
hundred catches, three thousand career yards, and thirty touchdowns. Really
impressive stuff for Phil. Talking about Phil's playing days, you
don't always remember you were playing days very vividly. But
you did play against Villanova on November twenty second, back
in two thousand and three. You came in for now
Hall of famer Andy Hall at Villanova, So you know

(36:23):
what it's like to take the field at the stadium
you're going to on Saturday. What do you remember from
that day?

Speaker 3 (36:28):
Yeah, I do remember that one. That was pretty memorable
for sure. You know, it was a championship, was the
A ten championship. Essentially the winner was gonna win the conference.
And you know Andy was our I mean, he was
our guy. I mean he was the heartbeat of the
program for sure. And he did go down and I
want to say this probably second. I think I played
the second and third quarters and he went down with

(36:50):
a bad shoulder injury. And you know I had gotten
in for a decent amount of mop up time that
you ever won the national championship. So we were up
by thirty a lot. So I played a lot that year,
but never in a situation that really mattered, and you know,
similar to the things we said about Nick, I think
I can remember the feeling of, you know, my teammates

(37:11):
having confidence in me, my teammates rallying around, you know,
making one or two plays, and then all of a sudden,
it was like, oh, this is just what we always
have done. This is football, right, this is something that
I'm here for a reason, and you know, we're just
gonna go take this one and a half at a time.
I do remember that it was a great feeling to
have the guys rally around me to keep us in
the game until Andy came back aftergetting whatever he got,

(37:33):
shot up and stuff and came back in and I
think he scored one last rushing touchdown at the end
of the game to put us up and got a
chance to get a victory.

Speaker 2 (37:40):
So pretty special moment for sure. Absolutely was You played
at Villanova, and our next guest has as well. He
started at Villanova in the win against the Wildcats in
the spring of twenty twenty one. Patrick Shupp is going
to be on the show. We'll take the time, how

Speaker 10 (41:36):
Thank you for having me.

Speaker 2 (41:37):
Absolutely, I'm so glad that to have you on the show.
I think that the rest of the alignment have been
on one time or another. You are maybe I say underrated,
not underappreciated, though we appreciate everything you've done. My broadcast partner, Bill,
he is a huge fan of yours. He probably wishes
he was here to night to meet you. I watched
the ball, I watched the quarterback and the wide receivers.

(41:58):
He's watching what's going on down there, and he's always
he's always pointing out all the great work that you do.
But the group of offensive linemen, I've been playing a
long time, playing a long time together. Describe the camaraderie
amongst the offensive lineman through the year.

Speaker 10 (42:12):
We're a really close group. I mean, these guys have
a bunch of great bunch of guys. I mean probably
all of them have been here since we first got
here in twenty twenty. So we're a really tight group.
We do a lot of things together. We have a
old line dinner every Thursday, so I feel like that's
a great way for us to get even closer. But yeah,
a bunch of great guys. I love playing with them,
love being with them.

Speaker 2 (42:30):
So every Thursday and O line and dinner? Tell me
about that? Is that in someone's apartment? Is that going
out to eat? What are we doing on Thursdays?

Speaker 10 (42:38):
We go out to you We find a different restaurant
every week to go to, so it's a great time.

Speaker 2 (42:41):
I would love to see just the fear on the
chef's eyes when you guys all wrote a Brock said
you went to I think Texas roadhouse or a steakhouse
and took down a whole cow once.

Speaker 10 (42:52):
Probably.

Speaker 2 (42:53):
Well, I'm glad that you guys are our friends on
and off the field. How much does that help, though,
especially for assent offensive lineman, When you guys are so close,
how does that translate onto the field?

Speaker 10 (43:04):
I feel like it translates perfectly. I feel like you
got to have great communication as an the line, so
I feel like us being closer it really helps us,
you know, be on the same page at each other.
So I feel like something that is really beneficial for us.

Speaker 2 (43:16):
Well, it has shown on the field, and you've got
a great career. I talked to Nick about how many
games he's played tenth all time. On Saturday he'll become
and games played. You're gonna play your forty fifth career
game on Saturday, and you'll have the opportunity to finish
second most all time at Delaware. Next season, you would
tie your coach, one of your coaches, Jordan Townsend, for

(43:38):
most games played. You have the opportunity to do that.
As someone that has worn and will wear this jersey
so much, what does that mean to you? To be
able to to wear the blue and gold as so
many times?

Speaker 10 (43:47):
That means a lot to me. I mean I come
from a very tradition of rich high school, so I
feel like coming to a school like this that has
great tradition, it means a lot to me. So that's
a stat that I didn't know, but that's a great
stat to know. I appreciate.

Speaker 2 (43:57):
Well, here here's another stat for you. The last starter
left from the twenty twenty one victory over of Villanova
in the spring that year, a big game. I talked
to Nick about what he felt winning that football game
you describe it in your terms.

Speaker 10 (44:13):
I don't know. I couldn't even tell you. I meant
a lot to me at that moment. Never really won
a lot in high school. I'm gona be honest, So
when in that it really meant a lot to me,
and I know it meant a lot to the guys
that might have been in their last year. So because,
like you said, not that great before when we got here,
but we got it done and I feel like in
that moment, that was probably the best feeling I had
a football field.

Speaker 2 (44:32):
In a low and the chance are replicated in a
couple of days as well. We're looking forward to that
talking with Patrick Shupp. You have been able to and
certainly have helped the players get to that point. But
you've blocked for two of Delaware's most prolific rushers of
all time, Dejon Lee over twenty four hundred career yards
and Marcus Yarns twenty two hundred yards and counting. What

(44:53):
has it been like blocking for a guy like Marcus Yarns?
Feel like any time he touches the football it could
go for six.

Speaker 10 (45:00):
Great it's you love to see that as on line
mean you love seeing your running back thrive. Two great players. Honestly,
they they are some great running backs, probably two of
the best running backs I played with in my career,
So they deserve it. I know Marcus are going to
go out there and get more on Saturday, so let's
go get them some more.

Speaker 2 (45:14):
Two different body types and physicalities, any similarities between the
two even and maybe their approach to the game.

Speaker 10 (45:21):
They're fast, I'll say that they're fast.

Speaker 2 (45:23):
They are fast. Day John has done, had a great
career and and Marcus still going with his on a Saturday.
You've also been blocking for multiple quarterbacks. You blocked for
Nolan Henderson in your career, a great quarterback, and of
course a few different this season as an offensive lineman.
Is there an adjustment that needs to be made based
on who's back there?

Speaker 11 (45:43):
Uh?

Speaker 2 (45:43):
Not really.

Speaker 10 (45:44):
We have trust in every quarterback that's back there, So
whoever gets thrown in, we trust them like it's the starter.

Speaker 2 (45:48):
So well, you made an adjustment earlier in career, started
as a tackle, went to a to guard or what
type of adjustment was that for you?

Speaker 11 (45:55):
Uh?

Speaker 10 (45:55):
I would say it wasn't wasn't too hard. I mean
I played a little tackle in high school, came here
played tackle. Coach said, Wen, you just played guards. I
was like, you know what, I'll play a little bit
of guard and I know I eat that hard.

Speaker 2 (46:06):
So we're glad you're open to the idea because it
has worked out so well for you. A great career
at Delaware can continue as well on Saturday and hopefully
a whole lot of games more. A couple of weeks ago,
when we had the bye week, we had a couple
of our coaches come on to the show and get
the chance to talk to them. Chris Rodgers was on
the show, and I think anybody that was gonna say
I'm a fan of his, but I think anybody that

(46:26):
meets him becomes a fan of Hill. Always positive, such
good vibes from Chris Rodgers. So what's it like being
coached by that guy?

Speaker 10 (46:32):
I love coach Roders man. He's a great guy to
have in the room. He's a fun guy to be around.
Never a dole moment on him. I'll tell you that.
It's always a good time. But when it comes down
to the football about it, he knows everything he's talking about.
So great leader, great coach.

Speaker 2 (46:44):
He knows the time to be serious though and obviously
it's showed he does great coaching. Who's the funniest out
out of the group of offensive line?

Speaker 10 (46:51):
Oh, I don't want to say me, but I'll say me.

Speaker 2 (46:54):
There you go. Yeah, that was funny right there. I
mean it's on the delivery and you nailed it right there.
We believe you because of that. Let's wrap this up. Patrick,
Thank you so much for coming on. Appreciate it. Uh,
this is probably the biggest a weight discrepancy that we've
had up on this stage throughout the season. You weigh
three hundred and fifty five pounds, that's what you're listed as.
You are the largest man on the team. That is

(47:15):
the biggest weight on the team. Take me through a
meal plan on a typical day.

Speaker 10 (47:21):
I don't know, it depends, It depends on what they
have in the whitney. Definitely two plates for sure. A
lot of protein.

Speaker 2 (47:26):
Yeah you're putting I mean a lot of calories, a
lot of a lot of protein. What's your favorite protein.

Speaker 10 (47:32):
At the windy ar in general, just wherever you're going.

Speaker 2 (47:34):
On a Thursday night with your offensive line, but.

Speaker 10 (47:37):
For offensive line on Thursday, steak Thursday, nice nicety steak.

Speaker 2 (47:41):
There you go, all right, it's an eating contest. Now
in the in the mindset, it's a team competition. You
get one teammate. Who are you picking to go against?
To be on your team?

Speaker 10 (47:50):
My team?

Speaker 2 (47:52):
He can put it down, oh for sure? All right,
a pound for pound? What would be the food item
that you're choosing in that competition?

Speaker 10 (48:01):
We'll go chicken nuggets?

Speaker 2 (48:03):
How many are we thinking? I'll follow up question, how
many chicken nuggets are are we popping?

Speaker 4 (48:07):
Oh?

Speaker 10 (48:07):
I say, I think we get one hundred down each,
to be honest.

Speaker 2 (48:10):
Each let's break some nuggets. I got a surprise for you,
Patrick freaking Now all right, we talked about sleigh bar
and Santa Clauss is here walking around. Take me back
to your childhood. What was a favorite Christmas gift that
that you got growing up.

Speaker 10 (48:27):
I've got a lot of great ones. Honestly, I would
say it was part of my first Xbox that I
got when I was a kid.

Speaker 2 (48:31):
There we go, Yeah, that was a good one. When
you get a video game system underneath the tree. You
were from eastern Pennsylvania, That is near the Crayola factory
where Crayola crayons and what not are created. Uh So,
ask a color. Question ready, Who's blue is best?

Speaker 10 (48:49):
Obviously? Is that blue and blue?

Speaker 2 (48:50):
There we go, Patrick Shop everybody, he's ready for Saturday.
Thank you so much for being here best. I appreciate it.
Against the Wildcats, we'll take one last break. We come back.
It's coach car. We we'll talk the Villanova Wildcats when
we return on ninety four to seven WTSD.

The Blue Hens Football Coaches Show with Delaware head coach
Ryan Carny is presented by First State or Theopedix on
ninety four to seven WDSD and iHeartRadio live from Klondike
Kates Restaurant and Saloon and welcome.

Speaker 2 (52:21):
Back in to Clondike Kates Restaurant. Final segment of the
Coaches Show this season. Thanks everybody for coming out all
year long. It means a whole lot that you guys
come out every single week here in Lacasa PASTA big
thanks to our staff as well. Brendan Thomas, sports information
Director for Football, Thanks to Brennan for coming out and
Ben Rubinstein, Director of Player Personnel. Ben, you win the party.

(52:42):
You got all twelve free meals this year. I think
we got they got to all twelve shows. Thank you
so much. But a great staff and a great group
of people behind the scenes that they make a season
like this happen nine to one on the year. Heading
into the Villanova game, let's talk Wildcats football and what
you guys have to do against the Villanova to bring
that Battle of Blue trophy home. They are first in
the CIA in total defense. They are first in the

(53:04):
CAA and scoring defense, allowing less than eighteen points per game.
When you're watching these guys on film, what makes them
so successful defensively?

Speaker 3 (53:12):
Yeah, they're they are very very experienced, uh tough, sound.
They do a decent amount on defense as far as
their fronts and their their looks and the secondary. And
then they have really good football players and they're well
coached and they're in the right spots. I mean, this
is it's one of those teams that you know that
it reminds you of a you know, reminds me of

(53:35):
you know, those late round playoff game type defenses. You know,
you're playing the North Dakota States and the South Dakota
States and Montana's you know, you're going up against guys
that are sound, they don't make mistakes, but they're also
talented and so they can make those one on ones
as well, and so I think that's what you see
from them. Really good you know, really good corners have

(53:56):
the ability to kind of bresh you in and take
you out of it, and and really good against.

Speaker 2 (54:01):
The run is probably what makes them them so special.

Speaker 3 (54:05):
And so you know they force you to to, you know,
kind of get out of your element at times if
you if you can't stay balanced.

Speaker 2 (54:11):
So, uh, it's a it's a we got to work
cut out for us. On the offensive side of the ball,
for sure, absolutely very tough Villanova defense heading into Saturday. Offensively,
their quarterback Connor Watkins, and he's had some success against Delaware,
was named preseason CAAA Player of the Year. He hasn't
put up statistically stats to live up to that billing.
The offense has not been as prolific. Is maybe that

(54:33):
the preseason awards will tell you they were expected to be.
Where have they struggled a bit offensively? And where are
they still very good though certainly enough to get an
eight and three record on the year.

Speaker 3 (54:43):
Yeah, I think the the thing that you see from
Connor is that there's no doubt there was a reason
that he was elected as the preseason Player of the
Year and he still plays like that. And I think
you know, they're they're not maybe as explosive uh in
the they're not his experience for sure. In the receiver
pos room, those guys were had played for a while together.

(55:05):
You know, their timing was so perfect. Uh, they'd hit
those big plays on you when they loaded asleep up
front with the run game and a successful run game,
and so I think maybe missing that one element. But
they're still doing such a nice job as just staying
the course and playing playing smart, playing sound.

Speaker 2 (55:22):
He doesn't turn the ball over. He can still beat
you with his legs and his arm.

Speaker 3 (55:26):
He's very accurate and still will take some shots here
and there, and he hits them when he when he
has the ability to. And so, uh, they do such
a nice job there, you know, coaching them up and
and you know the offensive line. You know, coach Devine
does such a really nice job there at the old line,
uh as well making sure they're uh they're in the
right spots and and communicating well and so they protect

(55:46):
him well.

Speaker 2 (55:47):
Is is a big key to it as well. And uh,
you know, we've talked about the motivation of this game,
and each player is motivated differently for different games and
whatever it takes for them to be motivated to win
a football game. That's what's most important. But how do
you balance this week all of the mees out there
talking about how big the game is, or the fans

(56:08):
talking about it. It's the last game of the year,
it's the bull game. I mean, it is a big game.
How do you balance kind of that that pressure situation
with your team?

Speaker 3 (56:17):
Yeah, I mean I think you know, there's certainly it
is a big game, Okay, so we can't just ignore that, right,
it's a fun one.

Speaker 2 (56:24):
We came here to play in big games.

Speaker 3 (56:25):
I know these guys decided to come to the University
of Delaware so that big games would happen in their
college career. And it does and it's going to on Saturday,
and so it's certainly not something we're going to shy
away from. But we also can't play differently because it's.

Speaker 2 (56:38):
That kind of game.

Speaker 3 (56:39):
You know, we have to do what we've been trained
to do. And you know, we've talked about it on
the show. You know, it's something we talk about a
lot as a team. You know, we can't just play
better because we're playing against somebody different. We can't play
better because it's a big game. We're not going to
rise to the occasion. We're going to fall back on
our habits. We're going to fall back on our training
and we've prepared ourselves for games like this, and we

(57:02):
just have to realize that that's there, and you know,
keep doing what we've been doing well and we'll be fine,
you know. And I think if we try to play
outside of that, try to play outside of our element,
try to play outside of ourselves, and you know, maybe
try to do too much because of the you know,
the intensity of the game, that's when we'll get into
some trouble.

Speaker 2 (57:20):
And so I think, you know, just kind of.

Speaker 3 (57:22):
Going about our business doing what we've been doing all year.
You know, we're we've only lost one and so if
we continue to play well, we will have our a
chance to win this one as well.

Speaker 10 (57:34):
Well.

Speaker 2 (57:34):
It's an exciting way to wrap up Delaware's time as
an FCS program and wrap up this season which has
been so much fun. A nine to one record and
a chance to get ten wins against rival Villanova. It's
going to be an exciting game on Saturday. I can't
wait to cover it. And as this is our last
show of this season. Coach, I want to just make
sure I thank you. You make these shows fun stress
