Speaker 1 (00:01):
Well.
Speaker 2 (00:02):
You are listening to the Blue Hens Football Coaches Show
presented by First Date or the PDX, featuring head coach
Ryan Cardy on ninety four to seven WDSD and My
Heart Radio with your host voice of the Delaware Blue Hens,
Scott Klatskin. And now welcome to La Casa Pasta Restaurant.
Speaker 3 (00:17):
In New Arc.
Speaker 4 (00:21):
And welcome in the Blue Hens of Football Cup Tasa
Pasta Restaurant right here for ud Football ninety four to
seven WDSDFM presented by First State orthoped X. I'm Scott
Klatskin and the Blue Hens are six to zero in
the fall for the first time since twenty ten. We'll
talk about how they got there and we'll look ahead
(00:43):
to a huge matchup against the red hot Richmond team
this Saturday. Plus joining us tonight, a senior that has
scored four touchdowns this season, Quincy Watson, is here, and
a safety that leads the conference in interceptions, Kat Say
is here as well. But first, please welcome into Delaware
football head coach Ryan Carty. Coach.
Speaker 1 (01:05):
How are we doing?
Speaker 4 (01:06):
I'm doing great. You guys are rolling. You should be
doing well also, and what a game it was on Saturday?
Again A win at home defending by Raymond Field forty
four to twenty one. We'll get into it doesn't necessarily
tell the whole story of the game. It main look
like a team that had come off of bye week,
had an extra week to prepare. They came out swinging
(01:29):
in the game. But it seems like what we're learning
is you can come out swinging, but it's hard to
go all twelve rounds with the with these blue hens.
Is that kind of what we saw in that football game?
Speaker 1 (01:39):
Well, I hope. So that sounds like a nice little
analogy there. I like that one. Yeah, I think we
definitely took their best shot for sure, and uh, you know,
I think what what people are finding out sure you
know that play against this is that they're gonna have
to take our best shot too, and it doesn't you know,
it's not just going to come in the first quarter
of the second quarter, a third quarter, fourth order. We're
(02:00):
gonna be a team that's gonna finish and we're gonna
make sure that you know, at all times we can
we can go ahead and and you know, put it
to the other team as well. So we understand in
in football and in the CIA and especially teams. Like
you said, coming off of bye, you know, we're gonna
have people's best shot thrown at us, and we have
to be able to absorb those and then strike back.
Speaker 4 (02:22):
It has happened over the last couple of weeks where
it's been close at the half and you guys have
pulled away. I don't want there to be a narrative
that this is the second half team seems better than
the second half. Statistically, on paper, it's about forty eight
percent of your points coming in the first half and
fifty two percent of your points coming in the second half,
so it's one twenty three to one thirty one. So
it's it's within a score either direction, so it's almost
(02:44):
absolutely even. However, in the second half, you guys are
outscoring teams a bit more in the second You are
plus ninety in the second half, plus fifty six in
the first half. It's a good place to be in
both hals. But I'll ask, though, you know, what are
some of the job I think. I think good coaches
can come up with a game plan during the week,
(03:06):
and this is world We're gonna execute again. We're gonna
come out swinging, and this give the best shots but
great coaches make adjustments and can pull away in the
second half like your teams have been doing. So take
us into the locker room a little bit and tell
us a little bit about some of the adjustments that
you're making, or what are the conversations that you're having
at the half.
Speaker 1 (03:22):
Yeah, for sure. I mean we go into the halftime
and obviously, our defensive staff meets as a defensive staff,
our offensive staff meets as an offensive staff, and we
make sure that, you know, we go over uh, you
know what happened in the first half. You know, every
third down that we got, every red zone, every red
zone situation that we got, what did we uh, you know,
what did we have to combat against? And then how
(03:42):
can we continue to either succeed there or what do
we need to do to kind of change our our
plan going forward? Uh, based on what we've seen, because
most of the time, what you see in the first
half is what if it works in particular, you're going
to see it in the second half. That's what you're
gonna get right there there. That was their plan going
in and there gonna continue down that path because that's
how we've uh, you know, we practiced it all week, right,
(04:05):
And so now you know, with the ability to watch
things on uh on the iPad and make sure we
can actually see the film as opposed to just uh
recounting things, you know, visually, it's really helped us be
able to kind of uh, you know, confirm the things
that we think we saw and make sure that we
see those little minor details as well. And in the
(04:27):
in the way somebody is trying to attack us, uh
offensively and defensively, and and then we have to go
ahead and make those adjustments. And then I think the
biggest thing is that are our student athletes are just
guys that they know how to finish, because it's it's
how we do things in practice, it's how we do
things in the off season, it's how we do things
in springball. All summer is built around a being a
(04:49):
good enough uh, you know, physical athletes so that we
can be ready for those things. So all the analytics
and sports science that plays into how we prepare, how
we practice during the week in order to make us
fast at the end of games and deep at the
end of games and not being hurt as much so
that we have more depth than other teams. Those things
all play a factor into being able to outstand, you know,
(05:11):
kind of sustain things in the second half and like
you said, pull away from some people that maybe don't
have the same advantages that we have or use their
resources the same way that we have. And I think
a lot of it is also just based on, you know,
the belief that our kids have in each other that
they're just gonna go out there and play the next
snap and make sure that you know, things are gonna
work out for him as long as we continue to
(05:33):
believe in the things, the fundamental things in our program
that we really understand are gonna help us win football games.
Speaker 4 (05:37):
Well, you finished a strong last game against me. You
started strong as well. He started pretty fast thanks to
Phil Lutz and again a great performance from him. He
was a CIA Player of the Week. I was starting
to wonder if the CIA was not gonna award our
guys or what they were doing where they finally got
lets on the board and we got an award a
fifty six yard touchdown a minute forty six into the game,
(05:58):
and with that score a school record six games in
a row with a receiving touchdown. No wide receiver has
ever gone six consecutive games scoring a touchdown. You think
about some of the receivers that have played at this
fine university, But I want to talk about Phil LUTs
in a way that may we haven't in terms of
when he came here. You look at your depth chart
(06:19):
at wide receiver, Jordan Townsend, Chandler Harvin, Josh Young, lud
Kim Wimberly. Those are all guys that are ahead of him.
And right now we see him as a first team
All CAA selection, but not every player is recruited to
be an All CIA selection. So what was when he
walked into your office or you found him or talked
to him. What was the anticipated ceiling for this guy?
(06:41):
What were your expectations on Phil? And how has he
exceeded them? P?
Speaker 1 (06:45):
Yeah, I mean I think our expectations for Phil was
really just somebody who come in here and be somebody
who you know already had experience at the college level,
was going to be able to add some you know,
physicality to our room. He's he's a bigger guy, a
little little longer fast. We weren't sure how fast. It's
tough to tell. And you know, uh D three ball,
(07:05):
you know he's pulling away now. But how how fast
those guys are that he's playing against was tough to tell,
but we knew, you know, all the reports from his
high school coaches and his college coaches were that he
was just an awesome football player and a really good
person that was gonna come in here and work really hard.
And I know that was his intention too, was like
he wanted to see how he stacked up against this
competition and uh, you know, I had really done it
(07:26):
very well at the last place he was and and
kind of wanted a new challenge to see how, you know,
how he could do at the next level. And you know,
we're happy that he decided to come to Delaware and
be a blue hen you know, and a lot of
that he was. He was a walk on. He was
not a scholarship player out of you know, when we
took him, uh from from D three and so it's
one of those situations that he had to bet on
(07:47):
himself and say, I want to go do this. I
want to go get a graduate degree at this school
and and uh and play some ball and see if
I can make it happen. And he really did, and
so he is on scholarship.
Speaker 4 (07:59):
Say find it worked out, Yes, yeah, I mean, he
is certainly one of the top players in the league
and putting him in a great position to do perhaps
if he wants to continue to play football. But he's
got some more games at Delaware to continue to play
some football as well. We talk a lot about turnovers
and winning the turnover margin. It's something that you preach
(08:20):
and right now delawares first in the FCS and turnover
margin and first and fs and fewest turnovers lost. When
I lost two turnovers all season long, you can preach
to your players, Hey, turnovers are important. Don't fumble the football,
don't throw interceptions. But you know a kid's never trying
necessarily to fumble the football when he does, so it's
got to be more than that. Without giving away any
(08:40):
trade secrets. What do you think maybe you're doing at
practice or the student athletes are doing on a daily
basis that has allowed them to be so good at
that category that you're preaching every week.
Speaker 1 (08:53):
Well, I think you know what you said is true. Like,
I don't think anybody's ever trying to fumble the ball,
but I think there is a difference between not trying
to fumble the ball and making sure you are trying
not to fumble the ball. I think that's a different thing,
like you can be consciously not trying to fumble the ball.
And so, you know, we do a lot. We have
(09:13):
a lot of rules when it comes to ball security
and uh and so we do follow those rules and
when we don't, we uh we make sure that we
are are held accountable to those things when it comes
to the whole off season in practice, and it is
the foundation of what we believe in. And so, you know,
we have a lot of mantras. You know, the biggest
(09:35):
one is that the ball is the program and and
you'll hear at our practices a lot of screaming about
heart because that is what our buzzword is for holding
out to the football. And you know, there's a lot
of connotations for that, but mainly when we talk about
ball security, we talk about five points of pressure and
those are the eagle claw for our bi separate vacage,
(09:56):
and mind. And then we talk about wrist above elbow,
palm to heart and so if we're holding it like this,
we're holding it across next to our heart, which is
also the heartbeat of the program. And so it kind
of works on a couple levels, and you know, I
think there's probably times where you know, some of our
our players probably hear it in their sleep because we
scream it a lot. And and and then when it
(10:18):
comes to practice, we don't let things slide. You know,
that's not that's that's going to be. The thing that
I think makes anybody great at anything, right is can
you continually do it when it's uh, you know, now
it's week six, week seven, you know, can we not
go through the motions on it? You know, can we
not just say, well, we don't turn the ball over,
so it's not going to happen. That's not how it works.
(10:40):
You have to work at it every day. You still
have to do the same things in pre practice, and
you still have to have the same intention during those
drills in pre practice or else you're just going through
the motions and somebody else is going to catch up
to you because it's it's it's what we believe in.
And that's why, you know, somebody said the other day,
don't don't say you didn't turn the ball over. USA.
It's not about superstition. This isn't luck. This is something
(11:00):
that we work at and it's something that if we
continue to work at We're going to continue to be
good at it. Are we never going to fumble?
Speaker 5 (11:05):
No?
Speaker 1 (11:06):
Probably are. That's how life works, right, We're going to
have the ability sometime at some point to go ahead
and reattack our goals and make sure that we're continually
getting better at those things. But you know, the quarterbacks
play a huge role in that as well, as far
as you know, it's not just about fumbles. It's about
sack CAUs fumbles. It's about having two hands in the pocket,
you know, anytime we're moving, it's about making sure that worse,
(11:27):
putting that second hand over the ball, making sure that
we're you know, we're not throwing into traffic, uh, making
processing fast, making reads, fast, receivers getting open fast, Offensive
linemen blocking you know, tight ends and running backs blocking
in the past, protection, those things all matter. You know,
to have two interceptions in six games when we throw
the ball as much as we do is exceptional, and
(11:50):
it's an eleven person effort when it comes to that.
That's not the quarterback. Just like sacks aren't not just
on the old line. Interceptions aren't just on the quarterback.
And so we you know, we really believe in each
other and believe that the guy next to us is
gonna have heart at the top of his mind as well.
Speaker 4 (12:05):
Well, you can see and hear for our listeners how
passionate you are about the topic with good reason. Your
teams are sixteen and oh when winning the turnover battle,
and certainly six and oh this year. If you want
to know what he's describing what it looks like, find a
picture of Ethan ssawners Wied when he picked up that
fumble got into the end zone. We're to talk more
later on Coach, talk about some individual players, and certainly
(12:25):
we'll talk about the way Quincy Watson was able to
finish that final drive of the game, but we're gonna
hear from him first, so we'll take a time out
we come back. Quincy Watson will be on the program
on ninety four to seven w DSD.

Visit First State Ortho dot com. I'm Scott Klanskin, and
then now so pleased to be joining with the first
time on the program. Quincy Watson is here. Quincy, thank
you so much for joining us and to congratulations on
the season so far. They're loving you. Big ground of
applause here. Well deserved four rushing touchdowns on the year.
Let's start by talking about your most recent You know,
it was your job to run some clock and be
(16:25):
able to run the football. You convert on a third
down and you got him all the way down start
at the main forty one yard line, six straight carries,
and I think when he got in, I proclaimed that
it was a hard earned touchdown for you, tuckas take
us through that that last drive of the game to
put things away for good.
Speaker 12 (16:41):
You know, offensive line does a great job, so I
gotta give props to them. Other than that, it's you
know what coach preaches is that when you get your shot,
when anybody gets in the game, doesn't matter what one
t six. You just got to do a job. He
trusts us to do it. And you know, like I said, again,
(17:02):
offensive line done a great job.
Speaker 1 (17:03):
And that's all.
Speaker 12 (17:04):
I just gotta get props to them.
Speaker 4 (17:05):
Yeah, well, it''s easy to give them props. It's nice
to have them all back to most of the guys
have gone through some injuries and they're blocking for you guys. Well,
you talked about one through six in that running back room,
and then typically throughout a game, it is very common
to see one through four at the very least or
rotating in there and guys sharing the load for running
backs used throughout the season so far. When you're in
(17:27):
that running back room and you're with coach Pierce, you've
been on this team for for a little while, and
how have you used kind of your experience to bring
some veteran leadership to that group?
Speaker 12 (17:37):
You know, I just pitched you guys to know, you know,
just work hard every play, finish. That's one of our
core values for the team. So we'd like to have
a little competition at practice who can get the fastest time,
you know at practice because you know we were at
a Boston that's track us and stuff like that. But
uh yeah, just constant competition. We love each other and
we just want to make each other better every day.
Speaker 4 (17:58):
Who's in the lead. Would you say for the GPS trackic,
who wins more times than not? Is it pretty close?
It's pretty close.
Speaker 12 (18:05):
You know, we're all in twenties, so that's a good sign.
Speaker 1 (18:08):
That's good. Yeah.
Speaker 4 (18:09):
The point being is that that's a great compet just
to have who can work the hardest. I'm sure coaches
enjoy that type of competition. I mentioned you've been on
the team for a little while. Your first game with
a carry was versus North Dakota State on September fourteenth,
back in twenty nineteen. An exciting game. Then, how do
you feel like you've grown as a player since the
(18:30):
Bison came to town.
Speaker 12 (18:31):
As a player, I think I've grown with a lot
of patients as far as running the ball, just understanding
the the what we're trying to accomplish, accomplish as offense,
and like the scheme of everything. And I feel as
though my time being there for a little while, I've
had some time to you know, learn it once, learned
it twice, learning three times, so it's kind of it
kind of comes natural now.
Speaker 4 (18:52):
Boy, it looks that way when you're out there on
the field. We didn't even have a full stands when
that game was going on. I think I was in
some type of ship press box on the other side
and they were still building up the Whitney if you
remember back to that game. So you have started then
and now you're on a team that's going to move
up to the FBS level next season. So you have literally,
(19:14):
you know, seen this school grow and you've left the
program or you will when this season is over, better
than when it started. How excited are you to know
that the program is doing big things?
Speaker 12 (19:26):
I'm very excited, you know me. My time to be
an alumni comes very soon, you know. I'm just glad.
I's some great hands right now with coach Cardi and
the rest of the staff, and I'm looking forward to
what they have to do in the future.
Speaker 4 (19:38):
Well, you are an alum, you are or when the
season is over, but you are already a university della
re graduate. Give it up for that fantastic. I hope
you go on to play football for a long long time.
But when you are done with the game, what do
you want to do with that degree?
Speaker 1 (19:54):
Right now?
Speaker 12 (19:55):
Well, I'm in the middle of working on my master's
in the National business, so I'm thinking about looking at
some operational roles sales, you know, marketing and finance, something
like that.
Speaker 4 (20:05):
Well, whatever you put your mind too, I'm sure you'll
be able to accomplish. That's fantastic. You have played. And
we're talking with Quincy Watson in forty seven games here
at Della where we talked to Tyrack Pitts in that
seat a couple of weeks ago. Absolutely, he's the all
time games leader. You won't catch him, but you have
a chance to get to fifty two, which would put
you in the top ten for games played all time.
(20:26):
It would tie you with Matt Markarel for tenth all time.
And Matt Markarel played nine seasons, he was captain all
nine years. He played with rich Gannon and Joe Flacco.
It was an incredible career, the run that he had
for those fifty two games. But when you think back
to those forty seven you've played, does any specific game
or moments stand out to you?
Speaker 12 (20:45):
You know, I like to focus on the now and
not really much in the past, But you know, a
couple of games. One game I'll say probably was getting
back what was it not last season two seasons ago?
Speaker 4 (21:00):
How about I'll give you one. How about that? How
about the Lafayette game when last season you were down
twenty eight to seven and the team needed a spark.
You had a season high end carries with twelve, and
you scored the first touchdown of the second half to
help ud Spark come back in the third quarter. Take
us through that game where you were asked to do
(21:20):
a whole lot and the team was able to come
back and get a victory.
Speaker 1 (21:23):
Right.
Speaker 12 (21:23):
You know, my main mindset is when I get in
the game, I want to make a difference, you know.
So I tried my best to you know, not say oh,
the game's over, the game like we're done. Even if
we're up and over down, it doesn't matter, you know.
Once you get in there, you gotta make a difference.
So that's my main thing.
Speaker 4 (21:38):
I love that you are so focused on Richmond, you're
not even thinking about it at all. Correct, come you back.
I'll have you come back when at your lum and
we'll talk about some of those great memories. Let's getch
you the final five questions. You were a wide receiver
at Malvern Prep in high school early, spent some time there.
Who has the best hands in that running back room?
Speaker 13 (21:56):
Oh?
Speaker 1 (21:56):
Man, I don't like the bag.
Speaker 4 (22:00):
I think it's the guy to my right. Absolutely.
Speaker 3 (22:02):
Uh.
Speaker 4 (22:02):
You went on the three oh two Tour, The three
oh two tour last summer, Is that correct? What was
your favorite stop or one of the stops you enjoyed
on that three h two tour.
Speaker 12 (22:11):
One of the stops we took we went to the
one of the beaches out in Delaware. It was just
I've never seen the shelf like a shellfish, some big thing.
I forget what is what it.
Speaker 4 (22:23):
Was, and you were able to experience that.
Speaker 12 (22:27):
But it was just it was something different than I've
never seen when I go to the beach.
Speaker 4 (22:30):
That's awesome. It was a nice I'm glad you're out
to enjoy the beaches down there. What is your cheap
day meal? So if you could have whatever you would
want to eat when the trainers and everyone's not tracking you,
what would you have?
Speaker 1 (22:41):
Would I have?
Speaker 12 (22:43):
I had to say, I'm be local and go big
Z pizza, big z all right, little shoutout pizza, specifically
a cheese tea.
Speaker 4 (22:50):
All right, big z cheese sick and I all come
your way. Uh, you have a bus trip coming up
to Richmond, about four hours, four and a half hours
on the drive. What's your what's your bus stratgy? Are
you sleeping? You listening music, you're watching a movie? They
talk what you do on the bus, A little bit
of all that.
Speaker 12 (23:04):
I like to get a little sleep at first. I
like to watch a little show, you know, get watch
some but I always had a falling asleep on the bus,
right so I just, you know, just relax and just
when I wake up, I probably listened a little bit
of music and we're probably there by the time my

on offense, Ty Davis on defense, and Josh Kupit after
getting a week off on special teams. You'll hear from
defensive coordinator Manny Rojas in nineteen seventy four football alum
Bill records will be there as well. I'm Scott Kat's
(27:23):
good now join once again by our head coach Ryan
Carty and coach you know, I like to brag about
how well your team's doing when it's doing well, and
it certainly is all the time. I should I like
to brag about you guys all the time, but it
just so happens that you guys are six and zero.
How about this for a stat about your offense. I
think this is correct. I tried. I dug pretty deep.
Brendan can can fact check me as well. But this
(27:45):
is the first team in Delaware history to score forty
points five times in the first six weeks of the season.
No one's ever done that. This is an explosive, explosive offense.
It's pretty impressive stuff that you guys are doing, and
it's so fun to watch, for sure. But I want
to talk about the advantage that maybe that has mentally
coming into a ballgame. When you know, you talk sometimes
(28:08):
about we got to do the things that we do
well and we just have to be us. Do you
feel like teams, because they know they have to score
with you guys maybe try to do too much, or
try to go outside of themselves, or try to installed
too much just to try to be able to hang
with you.
Speaker 1 (28:23):
Yes, I didn't think of it that way, but I
can look at it from my perspective as being an
offensive coordinator going against the team where you know, I've
played against teams that scored more than us. You know,
incarnate word comes to mind. There's been some teams over
the course of time it's like, oh, if we don't
score one time, the feeling that you get, it's like, oh, no,
(28:44):
what's going to happen? Are we going to get the
ball back? With this game? You know, not still tied,
you know, and and so it certainly has changed sometimes,
you know, not that I want it to. It has
changed the way I've thought about game planning, the way
that I've thought about calling plays. So I'm sure it does.
And you know, I think that's a good thing. You know,
(29:04):
we always talk about, you know, if we do the
things we're supposed to do, we should have people hoping
that they don't have to have us on their schedule.
That's our plan. You know, we want to have that
kind of confidence that we can go score on anybody
and stop anybody. And you know, I'd love to you know,
get off the bus and have people, uh concerned that
delawares in town. And you know, I I think that's uh,
(29:25):
it's possible that you know, some teams are going to
feel that way. I think offensively probably going against it.
I know there's certain teams that you know, shoot shoot,
you know, like Richmond's a really good defense and you know,
those they're one of the best in the country. And
I don't think that they're necessarily going to be scared, yeah,
you know, because they know that they're good at what
they do. And I think that's kind of the fun
(29:47):
part about you know, competition in sports, though, you know,
as you get a chance to you know, you got
to what you know, move able object and unstoppable force, right,
and you kind of go see how you know, who's
got it better and who does it better that day
is really the thing that is going to is going
to matter the most, Like who can execute your playing
better than the other guy can execute theirs?
Speaker 4 (30:05):
Well, you've been doing pretty well with exek cut and
yours talk about the offense. Defense not too shabby as well,
And so I want to talk about ty Davis in
the big play that he had in the game on
main but even more than that, ty Davis, Now when
you look at his career at last, or at least
look at the last two seasons, Stonybrook interception return for
a score that was in the second half, it kind
(30:25):
of sealed the game for a Delaware in the opener
last season versus Penn an interception to seal the game
in a closely hard fought game at Delaware Stadium, and
then this one kind of put the game away his
interception return for a touchdown. When you think of clutch,
you think of Tom Brady or a quarterback or the
guys that have the ball and whatever sport we're talking about,
can you be is there such thing as as a
(30:47):
clutch gene for defense? And how might it apply to
what Tied does?
Speaker 1 (30:51):
Absolutely like you're seeing it right. I mean, you know
we've we've sat on the show before and we talk
about it a lot, and you know, in particular on offense,
we talk about it with scramble drills a lot of stuff.
We talk about the ball finds energy, right, and energy
is a talent, and I think you can be talented
in something that's really just effort. And I think Ti
is one of those guys that you know, he goes
hard on every play and he's got really good ball
(31:13):
skills and those things when you put those two together,
and that's why we try to recruit that way. It's
why you know KT is on this show tonight because
he has three or four picks and you know, one
got called back. I don't know how any of that
technically has, but you know, he's one of those guys
that when we were recruiting him, it was like, well,
you know, it's funny, you know, like some of the
defensive guys that you know, you get to know your
staff when you first talk about who you like and
(31:34):
what you're thinking about. And we're watching high school tapes
and I was like, well, this kid doesn't catch very well.
And it was one of those defensive guys, like, what's
he's a dB, you know, he just needs to that.
That's not the kind of dB that we want. And
we want guys who can catch the football so that
we get the ball back. Okay. And so those are
the things that we started recruiting a little bit differently,
(31:54):
you know, and not just you know, better or worse,
just differently. This is who we want to be. We
want to be the team that can go create things
on defense, and more athletic we are, the more fluid
we are, the better those two sport athletes, those guys
that play both ways, those are the guys that I
think can really find the ball. They have a knack
for getting the ball and Ties. One of those guys, right,
he was a receiver dB corner in high school. And
(32:18):
those guys that are long, you know, athletic guys that
can that have the ability to grow and be bigger,
you know, like KT also you know, could play outside
back through you know, he's only going to get bigger
and longer and stronger and now he still has those skills.
And so that's what Tie has really brought to the
table is that he plays really hard. He's very smart,
(32:39):
and so he's around the ball a lot, and then
he can make the play when it comes to him.
And that's probably the most important thing, right is can
you go ahead and make those tough catches, Can you
make those tough you know, fumble recoveries. Can you just
be around the ball and have a knack?
Speaker 4 (32:50):
And he certainly has all of that. It's been impressive
to watch him progression in his career. I want to
go back and talk about some of the plays in
the game, and going back to the last play of
the first half, and I don't care, you know, I
do care, but like in terms of this question, if
if Marcus got stopped or not, or why you went
for it on fourth down, or if analytics say all
that stuff, it was fourth and one of the goal one,
(33:11):
you go for it. That's you know. But what I
do want to ask you about is what seemed to
be a fun little chess match that was going on.
For those that don't remember, it was the end of
the first half. It was a goal to go situation
third and two. I believe third and goal to go
from the two, and you lined up with Thall and
Lutz in the backfield, and obviously he had Noah, the
(33:32):
head coach, Jordan Stevens or the defense corner had never
seen anything like that. So they call it time out.
We're not ready for this. We're not ready for this one.
So they get a timeout. You guys come back onto
the field, run a play, and then you have put
Thall and Lutz in the backfield again, and again he's like,
I've never seen this. We can shout this time out.
I'm burning another time out. And then after that timeout,
what do you do the third time? You put Thaw
(33:53):
and lets down there. We're running this play. Talk this
through kind of your mindset and your determination and be like,
I want to I want to run this.
Speaker 1 (34:00):
A chess mass that we apparently lost in that one. Yeah,
it was one of those plays that we had worked
on a little bit, and you know, I obviously throughout
the week and it was gonna get run at some
point that day, and you know, I thought it was
the right call at that time. And you know it
was funny. The week before, you know, we had a
couple we had two out of our seven, uh you know,
(34:22):
third and shorts stopped, third and short, fourth and short stopped.
And you know, I thought some of those ball inside
the ten calls were you know, I talked about it
a postgame I talked about on this call. I thought
they I thought they out coached me two weeks ago
in mom at down there in the ball inside the
ten area. I thought that we weren't as clean as
we could have been, you know, in the game plan,
(34:42):
and you know, and sometimes it's coaching and sometimes it's execution,
and sometimes it's just really good football on defense. And
I thought this week was a little bit more execution.
I don't think we executed as well this week as
we should have in a couple of situating like two
third down situations, third and short situations too. And then
of course, as you noted, you know, like when we
get to that point where we're doing it again later
(35:04):
in the game and we score on it, we talk
less about the times that we convert the third and
shorts than we do about.
Speaker 4 (35:09):
The we're supposed to be one hundred percent absolutely right
every third down version.
Speaker 1 (35:13):
You know, I mean, as you said, analytics don't matter,
but you know they are there. I mean, it's sixty
percent of the time you're going to get a fourth
and one and that's about the fourth and one from
the goal line.
Speaker 4 (35:24):
And I we talk analytics a lot, so I did
have a question, and maybe I'm just a dummy, and
I can confirm that I am. But when you say
that we're checking the analytics, what are you literally looking at?
Is it a chart? Is it a computer? Is it?
Speaker 1 (35:40):
Like?
Speaker 4 (35:40):
How do you know this very specific?
Speaker 1 (35:42):
Hey?
Speaker 4 (35:42):
The score is twenty one to thirteen. We have the
ball at the thirty eight yard line. It's third, it's
fourth down and three. Like, what in that very moment
are you checking?
Speaker 1 (35:50):
I'm not telling.
Speaker 4 (35:52):
Okay, so it is it is proprietary or it is
It's not like this is every team has this equipment.
Speaker 1 (35:57):
Every team that's not having Okay, fantastic.
Speaker 4 (35:59):
That's glad, I asked. I'm glad I asked because I
certainly I know it's not like a sheet a piece
of paper where that has every unless it would have
to be a lot of paper that laminated Uh does
laminatede sheets of paper and your colored pencil, So, uh,
you are ready to go with that? Interesting though, I'm
glad that I asked because I was curious of that.
(36:20):
Lastly before we talk Richmond uh and talked to Kat
say which I'm excited to do a little housekeeping to do.
Marcus Yarns, you're running back played I think one snap
in the second half. Was that precautionary or how's he doing?
Speaker 1 (36:34):
Yeah? Uh, you know, I again, just dealing with some
some injury stuff. You know, we've had We've had that bug,
it seems in the first six games, and we've been
able to overcome it for a little bit. So hopefully
we can continue to do that and hopefully he is
getting better soon.
Speaker 4 (36:47):
And just so we can get through the hour and
I can say, I asked, You're still have some questionable quarterbacks?
Is that correct?
Speaker 1 (36:53):
We do. We're about the same there. We have like
a you know, all three of the guys who have played,
I guess we've actually played five, but the three guys
who have played the most are all in the same boat.
They're all fairly questionable and a little bit banged up
and or a lot banged up. And so we're we're
strying to piece and meal that together in practice and
continue to hopefully get back to full force at some
(37:15):
point soon, like we are at the old line, which
has been great, and so you know, we still have
a decent chunk of guys that are you know, out,
but again none of them, it seems, are going to
be out for the whole season. I think we've been
really lucky in that respect that we know our injuries
have been things that you know, it seems that people
will come back from uh, we just don't really know
when sometimes. And then as the week progresses, there's you know,
(37:38):
injury reports daily that kind of change up and down.
They fluctuate, and it's very fluid for now.
Speaker 4 (37:43):
Well, as we'll find out in the last second with you,
you're not the only a team that'll be going into
the weekend with kind of a question mark around the
quarterback position. In turn, do you say, we'll be there
on Saturday and they'll be next to me in about
three minutes. So we'll take a time out, we come back,

Great crowd. Thank you for coming on out and thank
you KT say is here for the first time. Get
it up for KT. Welcome in and h three interceptions
on the season. You are six in all of FCS football.
You are first in the CAA in terms of inner receptions.
(42:00):
You have turned into a defensive playmaker. Only year two
for you. How do you think you have improved from
year one to year two now where you're making plays
seemingly every game.
Speaker 12 (42:12):
I think I got a lot of faster with my reads,
you know. I feel I got stronger as well. I
feel like I got smarter as well too.
Speaker 3 (42:19):
Well.
Speaker 4 (42:19):
We we're now expecting interceptions all the time now, But
we were introduced to you a season ago as a
freshman one maybe it was more of a surprise. You
were c AA Rookie of the week. You got the
first interception of her career against Saint Francis. What do
you remember about your first interception? As a rookie, I.
Speaker 12 (42:38):
Was just running deep in the post, and like I
was still running, he threw it. I didn't expect him
to still throw it. He overthrew his receiver and I
caught it. Then I was thinking about taking a knee.
I didn't know where I landed at, so I just
kept running and ran out of the bounce. And then
Coach Cardi had talked to me about.
Speaker 4 (42:54):
It, as as any good coach would give tips to
to a freshman. You say, like, I'm surprised he threw it.
Are there times when you're out there as a defensive
back where whether this year or last year in high school,
where you're like, I can't believe he's throwing the ball
right now, I'm going to pick this thing off.
Speaker 12 (43:10):
Yeah, Well, you've.
Speaker 4 (43:12):
Been able to do so, and you've had three interceptions.
As I mentioned, Coach Carter, you mentioned earlier that you
did have another interception a game that was called back
from a penalty. You've had your hands on the ball,
you had a chance for another one, right that was
a sacred heart. That's okay, But you have been around
almost five interceptions this season. So for what is the
(43:33):
key for you or for a safety to kind of
read that quarterback and nowhere to be.
Speaker 12 (43:39):
Just film watching and like it's just like a ringing
comes to me when I feel like the ball has
been thrown and like I just make a play.
Speaker 4 (43:50):
Well, we've enjoyed watching you make them and will continue
to enjoy watching you make them. You are part of
the reason why Delaware is ranked first in turnover margin
on the season because you have held the offense get
the ball back. We know that coach Cardi preaches turnovers
all the time and turnovers the takeaways. Is it true?
I mean, are you hearing him talk about that kind
of stuff in your sleep?
Speaker 12 (44:10):
Yeah?
Speaker 4 (44:11):
Is it just all throughout practice?
Speaker 1 (44:13):
Yeah?
Speaker 12 (44:13):
Sometimes we we own him in Indy and you just
hit him and yelling hurt from the other side of
the field, and it be funny you be talking to
us too.
Speaker 4 (44:21):
It's just just heart the entire time. Well, well it's
it's working, so every one thing. If it wasn't working,
it certainly is working.
Speaker 1 (44:28):
Uh.
Speaker 4 (44:29):
You are a member of a sophomore class. Uh that
is just loaded in the defensive backfield. I mean, fantastic
class yourself, Kasehawn Cox. We're seeing more and more Anthony
Crenshaw or we've seen make some big plays in the
turnover hasa I'm manning a nair Domini. What is it
like being, you know, coming into a new school and
a new environment and playing FCS football, but having those
(44:50):
guys to kind of gel with and be around. How
has that been helpful to have a whole group of
guys that are in the same class.
Speaker 12 (44:56):
It's been good, Like because you know you're not doing
it alone, so like you people around you to support
you and help you keep going. So like whenever anything
going wrong, you got somebody there to keep you up.
Speaker 4 (45:07):
We are talking to Kati, say, you are in the
same class as those guys. You may not be the
same age though, you're a pretty young guy. You're in
year two in college in an era i'll say of
college football where most guys are twenty two or twenty
three or twenty four with the COVID year and guys
still playing. You are only nineteen years old. You played
(45:29):
last year as an eighteen year old. What was the
experience like for you coming in at such a young age.
Speaker 12 (45:36):
At first, I was real nervous, like I ain't know
what it is spect so like I just trusted in
my coaches and my family, like getting wise words from them.
So like I just trusted myself and trusted what people
saff said to me, and I just went from there.
Speaker 4 (45:51):
Was there a moment where you felt like, Okay, I
can obviously nerve wracking coming in and being one of
the young guys. Was there a moment they said Okay,
I could do this, I can handle this. I'm I'm
good enough and I know I can excel.
Speaker 12 (46:02):
Yeah, There's been plenty of times, but like I still
go back and like, yeah, it's still more to improve on.
So like I still go back to that.
Speaker 4 (46:08):
Well we're talking with Kat, say, leave the CIA with
three interceptions, and boy did you have a lot of
offers coming out of high school, out of Moory High
School in Virginia. So why was Delaware the right choice
for you? Just a little case.
Speaker 12 (46:24):
I've never been up here before in Delaware, So like
I decided to come here, and the coaches, like Coach Rojas,
I like his energy, Like I'm familiar with that at
my own high school. Yeah, so I wanted to be
like with that, and I had a chance to play early,
so I took a leap at that.
Speaker 4 (46:39):
Well, wait, till you see the beaches at Delaware. I
have different seashells that you haven't seen before. It's fantastic.
You'll you'll, you'll love it. Wait till you can see
all of that. I do know that the team, I mean,
I think everybody in the CIA offered you. I know
the team we're playing on Saturday offered you a little late.
They were sixty five days after Delaware offered you. So
you already had the Blue Hens on your mind. That
is for sure. You went to tomorrow high school. I mentioned
(47:03):
you are. I say, for now, for now, the second
best safety to come out of your high school, Cam Chancellor,
was a four time Pro Bowl safety, won a Super
Bowl in twenty fourteen out of your same high school.
But that is a great place to go if you
want to play that position. Let's get you the final
five here, KT, where I ask you five random questions.
Your sister Maya, she ran track at Illinois. Who is
(47:24):
winning a forty yard dash?
Speaker 1 (47:26):
Definitely me?
Speaker 4 (47:27):
You're is it close?
Speaker 1 (47:28):
Is it?
Speaker 4 (47:29):
Wow? My goodness. I hope she's not listening. Maybe I
hope that she is. She can set it up all right,
I have a trivia question for you. Okay, we'll see
how if you know this, Fahrenheit is one way to
measure temperature, Celsius is another. Can you name a third
unit of temperature? Kevin kelvin? Kelvin is another unit. And
I'm obviously bringing that up because KT is kelvin. Kelvin
(47:52):
is your first. When did it become KT and not kelvin?
Speaker 1 (47:54):
For you?
Speaker 12 (47:56):
It always been kt, It's always been K. So it's
always Kevin when I do something, But it's been always
been kat.
Speaker 1 (48:04):
All right?
Speaker 4 (48:05):
And then also, I know when you were younger you
watch a lot of film on Nate Hopps. Is that correct?
Is that still your guy? Oakland Raiders? I got a
quick who you watching it now?
Speaker 12 (48:14):
Alante Taylor, Jesse Bates. I like on Cayla Hamilton too.
Speaker 4 (48:20):
Just a bunch of random guys that other people won't
be wearing jerseys off. But that's fantastic that you watch
them and improve your game. I asked Quincy what he
does on the bus? So what do you what do
you do? What's your routine on the bus? Are you sleeping?
Are you watching movies? Listening to music?
Speaker 1 (48:34):
Listen to music and sleeping?
Speaker 12 (48:36):
Like the Cherry Juice because it makes you really good.
Speaker 1 (48:39):
It make you go to sleep.
Speaker 4 (48:40):
I see I see him passing, and I travel with
on the bus with a basketball team a bunch. I
see that cherry juice all the time. So good stuff.
All right, we'll get it in your system, get some
rest and be ready for those Spiders on Saturday. So
nice to meet you, and keep doing what you're doing.
Thank you, Kat, say everybody. We'll take our final time
out and we come back. We'll talk about the Spiders
with our head coach, Ryan Cardy on ninety four to seven.

The Blue Hens Football Coaches Show with Delaware head coach
Ryan Carty is presented by First State or The Beat X.
You are listening to ninety four to seven WDSD and
iHeartRadio live from Lacasa Pasta Restaurant in New York.
Speaker 4 (52:12):
And welcome back into Lakasa Pasta Restaurant and a New
Ark It's a Blue Hens Football Coaches Show. I'm Scott Klaskin,
joined once again by our head coach Ryan Carty. His
Blue Hens are six and zero on the season, three
and zero in the CIA obviously won six games in
a row, but they take on a team that has
won four games in a row and that's the Richmond Spiders,
coming off of a buy a Great parting gift from
(52:34):
the CIA to the Blue Hens to take on two
teams that will be playing them with an extra week
of rest and install ready to go against Adelaware. I
want to talk defense for Richmond first, because some of
the numbers jump out when you look at the Spiders defense,
especially individually when they talk about Jeremiah Grant, who leads
the nation in sacks, he is a beast out there
(52:55):
on that defensive line. What makes them one of or
the best you'll face this season so far?
Speaker 1 (53:01):
Yeah, they are very They're very talented. I'd say they're
They're extremely sound and well coached, I think is probably
the thing that makes them as good as anybody that
will play. They're talented at all three levels. Really good upfront,
which is usually where it starts. You know, if you
have if you have a good front four and guys
who can rush the passer with just four and still
(53:24):
get to them, that's really gonna obviously, you know, start
be a spark plug for your defense. And they don't
do a lot schematically, they just do it really well
and uh and so they really do a nice job
at making sure that they're you know, their route wreck
and you got you know there, they see you know,
what you do with your alignments, which your with your splits,
(53:44):
with your you know, first initial couple steps of all
your route combinations, and they can jump them because they
know what they're supposed to do in their coverages. And
so you know, I think, really, you know, we got
our work cut out for us in the fact that
I think those kinds of teams are gonna do a
lot better after a bye and some other kinds of teams, right,
they think those guys aren't gonna just like change their
whole defense in one week. They're just going to really
(54:06):
wrap on the things that we do well and make
sure that they can, you know, you know, be specific
about our tendencies and the things that they've had a
chance to study with that extra seven.
Speaker 4 (54:16):
Days, and offensively we kind of tease it a little
bit in the last segment you were on. But they
are in a similar, similar scenario where they have a
starting quarterback the first three weeks in Kyle Wickersham play
and then he's been out with an ankle injury and
kind of up in the air whether or not he's
going to return. Cam Coleman has played the last three
(54:36):
and I'm sure Manny Rojas is planning to perhaps see
either one. Is he kind of seeing what it's like
going up against Delaware a little bit where I'm sure
it does cause a little extra work for the players
and the coaching staff because you're not exactly sure which
one you're gonna get, And in terms of those two,
one has a little bit more of a running ability
(54:57):
in terms.
Speaker 1 (54:57):
Of the skill set. Yeah, for sure. You know, it's
it's unique, you know, when you have to do that,
and it's it's really it happens a lot though in
the middle of the season. You know, you got that
point now where people are getting banged up and not
sure week to week who's coming back and who's going
to be able to make that trip. And you know,
sometimes you practice all week knowing that it's going to
be one guy and then he doesn't even show up
(55:17):
because he got hurt and you didn't even know it,
and you know, and you're you have to go out
there and at least this time, we know it could
be one of these two guys, and it's probably gonna
be one of these two guys, and so yeah, for sure,
we have to be prepared for both. I think, you know, again,
similar to their defense, I don't think their offense is
going to change extremely uh, you know, one way or another.
It's kind of you know, there are certainly a run
(55:38):
first team that you know, I think statistically in the
past game they're almost identical. You know, they have very
similar statistics. Uh the two quarterbacks do I think you know,
Wickersham runs the ball a little bit more uh at
the quarterback position. So those things, you know, we'll have
calls in for obviously those and making sure that you
know we're ready one way or another. But you know,
I think just a team that has, as you know,
(56:00):
a very good offense, of very good defense, and they're
really good on special teams too. Maybe one of the
best punters I've been told that we've ever faced.
Speaker 4 (56:09):
I hope we see that punter a lot about that.
I hope we get the CEO all that that he
can do in kicking the football. You and Russ Huesman,
who was the head coach of Richmond, have met before,
just to not on these sidelines down in Richmond a
thirty five to thirty FCS quarterfinal win when you were
the offense coordinator at New Hampshire back in two thoy fourteen,
(56:32):
Sean goldrich Our quarterbacks coach, threw for three touchdowns ran
for another. You were down in the fourth as the
number one team in the country came back to win it.
Do you remember anything about that one? Does it anything
you scored on two big plays in a row if
I can refresh, remember it's funny.
Speaker 1 (56:47):
I didn't remember anything about that until you just I
didn't remember that Coach Eastman was at chat ut chat Yeah.
Oh man, that's crazy. Yeah, what a what a fun one. Yeah,
that was maybe the best as probably one of the
best days of my life, if we're being honest. I
mean it was, you know, the first time New Hampshire
had ever made it to the semifinals, and it was
the year before, and then we were about we were
(57:08):
the number one team in the country, and all of
a sudden we were down and it was not It
was not great there for a minute, and then we
had a we ran a pretty fun trick play that
eventually made its way all the way to the NFL
multiple times being run later on. And you know, we
we we were on Sports Center that night with it
and that it kind of took off after that, and
so hit it for a long one and we never
(57:31):
looked back. It was a fun one.
Speaker 4 (57:32):
That's pretty cool. Well, we hope we see some some
triggeration on Saturday, perhaps against it never it's very good
Richmond defense. Now two teams leaving the c AA. So
Richmond were going to the Patriot League. Of course Delaware
we know going to Conference USA. And I don't ask
this question every week where it's oh, it's the end
of an era, and I'm not asking that we take
on Brian or Hampton or Campbell one of those teams,
(57:53):
but it and we talked about farewell tour. It has
really been much of a farewell tour because we've gone
to Monitor where I've never been before. We've gone to
North Carolina A and T where we haven't played before.
But this one, I think it does apply where there
is a historical rivalry against Richmond. It is the last
road game until November twenty third, soh is there is
(58:15):
that that feeling in terms of like this one actually
maybe fits the description of farewell tour and of an era.
This will be the last time we play Richmond in
program history unless it's a non conference game in FPS
as you.
Speaker 1 (58:27):
So eloquently just described it, I think it does. Yeah,
you know, again, that's something I hadn't really thought about
a ton, But yeah, it's it's it is the end
of an era. And there's no doubt that sometimes you
know that, you know that nostalgic can creep back in
and you can, you know, remember those times where you
were down there as a player and as a coach
at you know, a couple of different schools and and
(58:48):
you know, I think you know this area. You know,
being able to play regional games like that is a
fun thing. It is. You know, when you play somebody
year in a year out, you kind of get to
know them and kind of get to know what kind
of team they are and what kind of facility they have,
and what it's like to go travel down there and
you have those memories of it. I'm looking forward to,
you know, going down there again for the last time
(59:09):
here and uh hopefully putting up a good fight. And
and then I'm also looking forward to the future of
this program and getting a chance to make new memories
and and you know, go to some new places and
have some fun doing that too, and and and welcome
some new people to Newark, Delaware so they can see
all the great things that we have and the fan
base that we have. And so, you know, I think
one way or another, it's gonna be fun because it's
(59:29):
Delaware football and so you know, I think, uh, this
is a great week and it'll be a fun one
for us, and uh looking forward to one at a time,
Like Quincy said, well here you go.
Speaker 4 (59:40):
Well it's been fun. You are six and I and
I hope you get to one to o on a Saturday. Coach,
you have about eight minutes until first pitch. Thank you
so much for being here.
Speaker 1 (59:48):
I appreciate you.
