Speaker 1 (00:00):
Number three. This is hit Me for Brady one More Time.
Speaker 2 (00:07):
I'll look back on all things nineties and two thousands,
the movies.
Speaker 3 (00:13):
The music, they are of course, Jingja, Spaty, scary Baby Bush,
they all cord WHI sy the awkwardness.
Speaker 1 (00:24):
I needed to do aerobics till I dropped. Then I
found Thine Master. Here's your host, Brady Broski. I love
thy Master. I just said that, didn't I I think
you did. I pretty much screamed it. Your thighs are
looking great today, thank you. Ah, it's Eliah. It wasn't
thigh Master, wasn't wasn't awkward like the intro suggested. What
(00:47):
was awkward was when I captured the audio to put
together for this my I hit pause on YouTube and
it froze and it paused, like right as Suzanne Summers
like nights were spread wearing that onesie you know the commercial.
Oh yeah, of course, And I'm like, what if my
boss walks in where you do? Yeah? I was gonna say,
what're you doing that? Here? Somebody walks in right now? Hey,
(01:10):
welcome to the Hit Me Brady one More Time podcast.
This is where we do a deep dive into all
things nineties and two thousands pop culture music movies. We'll
get into snacks at some point, are horrible ordrobe.
Speaker 2 (01:24):
I would like to get into a snack right now.
We have a snack bar right there. It is.
Speaker 1 (01:29):
It is the highlight of this office. Without ask the Lord.
We have so many pop tarts and a cheese machine.
Speaker 2 (01:35):
So that thing scares me. I loved it for a
few weeks now and I'm not touching that thing. I
am not there because the cheese sauce has been said.
For those of you listening to me, like, what the
hell are we talking about? It is essentially the machine
you see at like a stadium when you order nachos
and it sits in the breakroom. It was delicious for
a while. No, I'm terrified of Well, what.
Speaker 1 (01:56):
Makes it gross for me is when the cheese falls
and some but he doesn't clean it up, and you
look at it. It's like sitting there, it's really hard. Yeah,
it turns like orange. It's a weird color. I don't
want that inside me. Hey, for those of you that
don't know, my name is Brady Broski, almost twenty years
that's crazy to say of programming in on a radio
experience lucky to interview and meet countless artists throughout the years,
(02:22):
all genres of music, been to hundreds and hundreds of concerts.
So that's why I created this podcast. It gives me
an opportunity to go back and relive some of the fun,
nostalgic moments growing up in the nineties and two thousands.
And like I said, we're gonna take a deep dive
into all these things pop culture, and I'm gonna bring
along some of my best friends with me. So this podcast,
(02:42):
you know, it's for gen xers, zeers, millennials, and whatever
the weird ones are in between. And today we talk
about an artist who really exploded in the mid to
late two thousands, and I'm going to share some of
my recent conversation with him as well later on in
the podcast. It's the one in a con acon icon
(03:03):
Acon the Icon. Oh my god, that writes itself. Yeah,
I just literally popped up. How has that never been
a thing? Maybe it is, I've never heard it. It's amazing.
That's going to go in the description Acon the Icon.
There you go. Joining me today is another fellow music
lover who's also worked in the radio industry. Since you
were in college. Yeah, twenty years as well. Also goes
(03:24):
to a lot of concerts. Most recently flew to Italy
to see Taylor Swift. I did.
Speaker 2 (03:28):
I did, which was remarkably and you know, cheaper than
seeing her in the US, including the airfare, including the hotel,
including really the food we ate and the drinks we
drank the whole time.
Speaker 1 (03:41):
A lot of seconds flying to Italy, two tickets to
Taylor Swift, hotel, accommodations, all the money you spend spending
money was cheaper than buying a ticket to see her
in like Indianapolis.
Speaker 2 (03:54):
Yeah, I mean, I won't get too deep into the weeds,
but I'll give you some quick math. Each of our
tickets was about seven hundred apiece total after fees front
row of the second level. The airfare was about one thousand,
and you know hotel was one hundred something a night.
So enough it was. I had to save up money.
(04:15):
I'm not necessarily getting rich at this job. You know,
I had to save some money. But oh wait till
the sponsors start rolling, right, Yeah, no, the endorsers. If
you're out there pop tarts, you already mentioned you skip it,
skip it, remember that thing?
Speaker 1 (04:31):
No, all the food conversations. That is there a food
called skip it? I remember Skippy peanut butter. Yes, also
that's still around. I'm pretty sure.
Speaker 2 (04:42):
Anyway, we got diverted from our diversion. But so it
wasn't cheap. But you're talking that was like what ballpark?
Maybe twenty five hundred just to get in the door
after fees to see her in Miami.
Speaker 1 (04:54):
Yeah, was over three thousand.
Speaker 2 (04:55):
Oh no, if you wanted two tickets with a friend,
you were paying over three thousand piece just to get
in the door. So we flew to Italy, toured around
Milan for three days, saw her show, which was of
course epic for less.
Speaker 1 (05:09):
Than that chef's kiss. That's a great trip, Right, you
travel a lot. I try, I try. Very privileged man
over there, all right, here we go. We talked about
my privilege. Now I acknowledged my privilege. We are talking
akon today. I had a homework assignment and I wanted
to do this podcast because I did have a conversation
with Acon a couple of weeks ago. And as I'm
(05:29):
doing the research for that conversation, I was like, you
know what this dude, I don't think it's it you
I don't think he gets enough credit for his contributions
to music in Top forty really in that part of
the decade. So here we are talking Akon. In my
homework assignment for Dirty Dan Ginsberg was to create a
mount rushmore of Akon songs. Did you did you find
(05:52):
this homework assignment to be difficult?
Speaker 2 (05:54):
I wouldn't say I found it difficult. I would say
one of my picks is a little out of the Blue,
I mean not out of the blue. To me, it
was a song I love. But yeah, obscure would be
the word. Okay, But I had a similar reaction to you.
As I started looking back at his catalog, I was like, Damn,
this guy was like bigger than I think he gets
(06:15):
credit for when we think back to that era. Yep,
I agree. I had ten Top forty hits. He had
five top tens, four top fives. You know, just a random,
dorky trivia fact that I learned doing this research. He
has had four top five hits. He has peaked at
every position in the top five except number one. He's
(06:37):
had a number two, a number three, and number four,
and a number five, No number one, no number Top
forty radio. Yeah, any guesses at what the number two
peak was. I'm gonna guess with Gwen Stefani Sweet Escape, No, oh,
you know what, I didn't look at features, so we
should probably I should probably check.
Speaker 1 (06:56):
On Sweet Escape.
Speaker 2 (06:57):
Number two was Don't Matter, which I would not have
guessed would have been his highest peaking.
Speaker 1 (07:03):
It's an all song, don't Matter. Oh so good that
puts me in a mood. It does it does?
Speaker 2 (07:09):
Yeah, No, And I guess wouldn't have guessed that was
his highest charting in like solo hit.
Speaker 1 (07:12):
I did look at his I counted his features. I
probably should have mentioned that before we went and picked
our four. But that's good, so we'll probably have different ones. Yes,
So yeah, his, I mean, his accolades are remarkable. The
dude three oh, he only had three albums, which I
was like, okay, just he kind of just like he
was big and then he left. He was like I'm done.
(07:33):
He's like, I'm gonna go out with a bang, like
I'm not gonna put out some crappy record like afterwards
kind of on top.
Speaker 2 (07:39):
He also did kind of the ludicrous tea pain thing
and a ton of features on a ton of great
songs by other artists.
Speaker 1 (07:46):
Too. Fun fact, Guinness World Record Acon holds number one
selling artist for Master Ringtones in the world. That is,
I think trying to do an episode about Ringtones, John
it down. Did you what was your ringtone? What was
one of them? I can only remember one. Oh my god,
(08:07):
I had a few. I think I had bone Thugs
in Harmony the Crossroads for a while, which that would
have been like an old song by the time Ringtones
were a thing. Definitely old. That was a throwback. That
was a throwback, yeah right, right now, It's just that's
just like classical book. Yeah. Mine. The one that one
that comes to mind for me was akon really yeah,
I want to love you? Okay? Yeah? And the version
(08:29):
that tone it started with this, this is when my
phone makes you like whatever, you call me up and
all of a sudden I see you wandering and so
imagine being you know, trying to be professional. Right. Is
the radio version though, that you're using for the ringtone
or the original? Oh no, it was the edited version,
ok yeah, yeah, I can't be like standing in line
at Duncan getting a coffee and f bombs coming on
(08:52):
my phone right right? Hey, you never know, you never know.
And he also just released a new single to you
should check it out. It's called Beautiful Day.
Speaker 2 (08:58):
So, by the way, just looked it up because we
real time fact check debate style on this podcast.
Speaker 1 (09:04):
Sweet Escape peaked at number two, so he.
Speaker 2 (09:07):
Never did never had a number one interesting but hit
every other position in the top five.
Speaker 1 (09:13):
I'll bet you they would go to number one if
they dropped today. So when I hear the name Macon,
I think of just that run, right, I don't think
of one particular song. I think of the run from
what did I say, oh four? It was like four
to nine. I think of that long streak of there's
another Akon song. He kind of evolved a little bit.
He started off a little more rhythmic, then got into
like the like the hip hop stuff with Eminem and Snoop,
(09:34):
and then it kind of dipped like more pop, yeah,
towards the end there. So I don't think of one
particular song when I hear the word Akon. When I
say the name Akon to you, Dan, what do you
what's the first thing you?
Speaker 2 (09:46):
I do think of one particular song actually, and it's
it would be also my first pick of his favorite.
Speaker 1 (09:51):
So did I just go let's jump in. I like it. It's lonely,
mister lonely. Yeah, the sample, you know, the old sixties sample. Yeah,
we can't play songs you can sing for we have
no we're a radio where a billion dollar radio industry.
We can't. But we can't pay for rights for podcasts
for some reason. I don't make the rules. So you
get my voice every once in a while. Okay, we
(10:13):
on some tangents today, we're in a mood. Yeah, no,
I mean that's I. I freaking loved that song. The
chorus was so catchy. I thought, you know, his verses
just was.
Speaker 2 (10:25):
Fit perfectly with the feel the way they match, like
the the new beat.
Speaker 1 (10:29):
To the old school feel of the sample. Love that song. Okay,
so you're number one pick. That's my number one pick.
Speaker 2 (10:37):
And that is also the song that like if you
say akon, that song instantly pops into my head.
Speaker 1 (10:42):
Interesting. That was his first songs, like big one, first pick. Yeah, yeah,
he had locked Up, locked Up right before that. Yeah,
Which when that came out, I was like, Oh, this
guy's like, this is a little he's a little spicy,
he's got a little backstory going on. I did some
research on that. Yeah, and Apparently he claims to Akon
Cli to have spent three years in jail, but somebody
(11:03):
fact checked him, like a decade later. It was like
now it was like a criminal like reports company, and
they said, no, no, Acon never spent three years in jail.
So he I think he lost a little street red there.
Speaker 2 (11:14):
That'll derail your political Actually, no, that won't derail you
anything anymore.
Speaker 1 (11:17):
Back in the day, if Acon was your prison mate,
would you be would you be scared at all? I
feel like it would be a good time.
Speaker 2 (11:25):
I uh wow, No, I would be singing, be making music.
Speaker 1 (11:31):
Yeah, yeah, you'd be wrapping bone thugs and harmony to
an Acon beat. All right, So I'm gonna go. I'm
gonna go with one of mine. Here we go, Okay, well,
creating the mount rushmore of Akon songs.
Speaker 2 (11:41):
Mister Lonely or is it just lonely? It's just it's
just sampled. The sixties song by Bobby Vinton was mister Lonely? Okay,
Acon song that sampled it was Lonely Love love Bobby's work.
I'm gonna go with my our sixties podcast that's coming
up next.
Speaker 1 (11:56):
I'm gonna go to the one I already mentioned I
Want to Love You. I Want to Love You with
Snoop such a good song. I still play it here
in Chicago on Kiss FM as a as a gold record.
And specifically why I put this in my mount Rushmore
is because at the time I was working for a
hot a Sea station, but I didn't want to work
for Hotty Sea stage just who hired me and the
(12:16):
only people that would hire me. Sure, I want really
want to be top forty. And for those who don't
know inside baseball, hot ay Sea is a little more
adult leaning, doesn't play a lot of the more rhythmic
or hip hop tracks, plays more of like your One
Republics and Daughtries the the of the day. Right. So
my program director came in to the studio, He's like,
we just added a song. I know you're gonna He
(12:38):
was like so happy to tell me because I was like,
I was like yearning to get to get like some
kind of rhythm on the radio to play a song,
and it was it was I Want to Love You,
And I was like, wow, it's getting kind.
Speaker 2 (12:48):
Of I feel like it didn't I feel like it
had the rap edited out. No, really, we went because
I remember those Hot Day Sea stations used to do
that all the time, and it drove me crazy. They'd
take out the best part of the song I can.
Speaker 1 (12:59):
Play, So I'm gonna go I Want to Love You
Akon featuring Snoop, So we got Lonely I Want to
Love You Mount rushmore of Akon songs Dan go.
Speaker 2 (13:09):
Okay, well again we're going personal favorites. So this one's
a little out of left field. His two thousand and
eight remake of want to Be Starting Something with Michael Jackson.
Speaker 1 (13:22):
Do you remember this? They remade it.
Speaker 2 (13:24):
It's actually I forgot about this. I rediscovered it with
doing the research he you know. So MJ died in
two thousand and nine. He did a song with MJ
alive in two thousand and eight, and posthumously after MJ's
death in twenty ten, they did hold My Hand, which
I think they had some you know, vocals, you know,
(13:46):
vocal tracks of MJ before his death saved up and
they released this. So he was on an MJ song
the year before and the year after MJ's death. But
I remember late two thousand's.
Speaker 1 (13:58):
What do we call that decade?
Speaker 2 (13:59):
The we just caught the two Okay, all right, We're
not in the two thousands anymore then, No, no, I
remember what we loving that song st want to Be
Starting It was two thousand. It was literally called want
to Be Starting Something two thousand and eight.
Speaker 1 (14:12):
Dear God, that cannot be good. Good, It's good. It
was good Mount We're going to listen.
Speaker 2 (14:17):
Do you just established why we can't play it for
all you lovely listeners right now? But I'm going to
play it for you, Brady when we when we get
off air today.
Speaker 1 (14:25):
So is it the same song just featuring Akon? Or
was he the lyrics? There were verses.
Speaker 2 (14:32):
I think that we're new. The chorus was the same,
but they you know, they changed up the beat. They
had some they had a Kon singing along with m J. Okay,
all right, I'm telling you you're you're going to be songs.
Speaker 1 (14:46):
I know. Maybe, I'm sure I've heard it. I'm sure
I have.
Speaker 2 (14:49):
Just not to add a video of Brady's face as
he listens to want to Be Starting Something two thousand
and eight.
Speaker 1 (14:58):
I throw up. So we got lonely. I want to
love you. I want to We started something in two
thousand and eight, and I am gonna go with another
song that you actually mentioned, and that is a number
two song on radio. Don't matter. Love that song. Like
I said, it's any time I hear that, it's just
(15:19):
it's like tropical feeling and you just feel you just
feel good. It's a good feeling song also radio selfishly
in me it had a thirty two second intro. Oh,
let you talk. I could talk for days thirty two seconds.
That's why.
Speaker 2 (15:34):
That's the the part before the singing comes on. When
you when if you're a DJ, you get to talk.
Speaker 1 (15:39):
Yeah. He loved those songs and we hated cold intros.
Yeah those are the worst. Yeah, that's what you have
to be like you're you're listening to Kiss FM, then
go right into it. Because so there we go, there's
our mount Rushmore. There you go.
Speaker 2 (15:51):
I mean, it's not what I expect. You picked his
two biggest hits. You picked the number two and the
number three. You know the number four was?
Speaker 1 (15:58):
It was number four features another rapper?
Speaker 2 (16:01):
Okay, uh smack that there you go with eminem Yeah,
honorable mention too.
Speaker 1 (16:06):
How about this beautiful okbe O'donnis Yes, that's right. Who
was also on Just Dance? Right?
Speaker 2 (16:14):
I was gonna say that was Lady Gogo's first single,
Bartender another honorable mention. M hmm, that was t pain
right featuring Econ. Yeah, if I had considered features that
probably would have bumped the ever so prestigious one to
be starting something in two thousand and eight, I might
have not acted it.
Speaker 1 (16:32):
No, you gotta stick with that till the day you
got on Dan Ginsburg's grave. My mount Rushmore includes Ah,
that's right, you said what you said. Yeah, I'm never
gonna We're gonna be referencing that soul survivor Young Jeezy Okay, yeah, yeah,
so many collapsed dangerous Cardinal Official right, yes, sexy chick
(16:54):
banger Cardinal Official also on like a remix of Just
Dance or that sounds very familiar. We're gonna have to
We're gonna know what, Dan, You're asking a lot of
questions that we don't have answers to. We're gonna have a.
Speaker 2 (17:08):
Driver like a conspiracy theory diagram of connecting Akon to
Lady Gagashow.
Speaker 1 (17:12):
All right, we gotta you gotta tell us how we did?
Would we miss? I think you're gonna I think you're
gonna completely agree with our four picks. Have all the
listeners we're waiting for want to be starting. There's like
one person They're like, I knew it, Uh yeah, drop
a line. Of course, we're gonna We're gonna post the
question up on Instagram and Facebook. You can find myself
(17:34):
Brady Broski on Facebook, Instagram. It's Brady Radio. Dan your
ig Dan G zero four eight two cool And like
I mentioned before, we're gonna chat with Akon. I'm gonna
bring you some of the conversation right now. Take a listen.
Speaking of vibes songs, Dude, I work here at Kiss
FM in Chicago and other stations across the country. Your music,
(17:54):
it still holds the test of time. We're talking like
almost like fifteen twenty years later, Sweet Escape, I want
to love you smack that we're still banging these songs
because they're all timers. When you're making songs, you probably
had you probably had no clue that this would last.
The success of these songs would last so long.
Speaker 4 (18:14):
Right, I mean no, I don't think anybody does.
Speaker 5 (18:16):
But the one thing that I've always noticed when it
came to music and me creating music, always made sure
that I felt good about it. Because I know that
if I feel good about it and it felt good
to me. There'd be millions out of millions of other
people that feel the same way. And oftentimes I always
found that anything that I've experienced was something that someone
else might have experienced too. So THO has been like literally,
you know, you could say my guides at anything, you know.
(18:38):
I mean, that was like the blueprint of me making
good records as long as it felt good to me,
and I feel like I could listen to this forever.
Then I feel like, whoever, there's people out there that
relates to me, and you can think the same way
that I was thinking.
Speaker 1 (18:48):
What piece of music are you most proud of? And
what piece of music has made acon the most money?
Speaker 4 (18:57):
Actually, I'm a when it comes to pieces of music,
I'm probably of all of them.
Speaker 5 (19:01):
But if I have to say that there was one
record that might have made me the most money, will
probably be Mister Lonely.
Speaker 1 (19:06):
Really, the one going all the way back the first way.
Speaker 5 (19:09):
Mister mister Lonely, I mean till this day is still
one of the biggest global smashes ever and don't matter
too from my international perspective.
Speaker 1 (19:20):
God such banners and I mean right now right obviously,
like part of your big chuck of your career. People
don't realize that are younger, you owned like that that era.
There was like a like a five year window where
(19:40):
it was like akon Acon Acon Acon, you know, all
over radio rotation and you collapsed with a lot of
like really big artists at the time, which I think
was key to your success too. To do it again
this this this time around, Is there anybody new that
you would that you would pick, you could hand pick
if you had like a wish list.
Speaker 5 (19:56):
Well, that's the beauty of it, because this time I
walked in with no wish lists the one the first time,
I had a full roster and wish list with Michael
Jackson being at the top of the list right. So
once I accomplished him, I felt like I accomplished everything
I wanted to accomplish. The music now I want, I'm
I'm gonna I'm in a I'm in a more of
a space discovery. So as I'm coming out now, as
we're discovering, I want to be collaborating with brand new
(20:17):
act to no one in the world knew anything about.
Speaker 4 (20:19):
And I want to be able to be a part
of making those careers.
Speaker 1 (20:22):
You want to lift up. You want to lift up,
you want to leave your legacy by bringing in new positivity, Yes,
brand new vibrations. I love you, I love your energy.
If you weren't in music, and music is obviously your
life even more so now talking to you, what would
you do? What would what would akon? Would you? Would
you be an entrepreneur? Would you be a gym teacher?
Speaker 2 (20:42):
Like?
Speaker 1 (20:42):
What would you do if them there's no music in
your life?
Speaker 5 (20:44):
Man, I'll probably be the CEO of read across the
FEMA somebody. Okay, you know what I mean honestly, because
I've always been the kind of person that wanted to
make other people's lives better, you know, And I always
trying to figure out whatever it is that that I
had any services or resources that I can use to
help someone else become a better person or help them
(21:05):
to have a more comfortable life or or way of living.
Speaker 4 (21:08):
I don't know.
Speaker 5 (21:08):
I was just always born a giver, so I know
I would be heavily into philanthropy somewhere, doing something big
for the world to change.
Speaker 1 (21:15):
As a man that's done so much for the industry
and music in general. What is one piece of advice
you would give somebody that's watching this interview that's looking
to follow in your footsteps.
Speaker 5 (21:24):
I would tell them to follow their passion because their
passion is always gonna be what takes them to wear
or heights if they want to be in their life.
I think most people kind of alienate their passion or
embarrassed by their passion because they see people around them
doing something different that seems to may be cool, but
they don't realize that everybody has a gift and God
gave us all a gift is something that we're great at.
So anything that you're great at, you're gonna do it,
(21:44):
and anything that you love to do, you're gonna do it.
Speaker 4 (21:46):
Do it a lot. Anything that you do a lot,
you're gonna become great at it. And eventually, when you're great.
Speaker 5 (21:49):
At something, you don't be paid for those services, and
that'll be your daughter to success.
Speaker 4 (21:53):
And I think if more people focus on.
Speaker 5 (21:55):
Their their their like their greatness and what they're actually
great at and what they have a ash for, it'll
be a lot more success moving around the world.
Speaker 4 (22:02):
For sure.
Speaker 1 (22:03):
Before I let you go, I do five favorites. So
just we're just gonna hit a rapid fire. Akon's favorite
group text name, group text name, you got group text
You got one? Right? You got one?
Speaker 5 (22:15):
Yeah, I got what It's called jellyfrice.
Speaker 1 (22:19):
What is that?
Speaker 2 (22:20):
So?
Speaker 5 (22:21):
Jellifrice is a text group with me, nni X, my sons,
a couple of writers and producers, and we're all Africans, right,
so the one thing we all got in common is
jellyf rice in West Africa is like the most famous
rice in all of West Africa that.
Speaker 4 (22:35):
We all love.
Speaker 1 (22:38):
I like it, favorite sticker with the food, favorite condiment
to put on something you got to catch up.
Speaker 5 (22:43):
You gott it's actually hot sauce I love. Yeah, I
gotta have spices everything. I gotta be hot and spicies great,
like hobber Narrow hot.
Speaker 1 (22:51):
Though I put hot sauce on popcorn. My wife thinks
something absolutely insane, but it's all good. Favorite article clothing
that you've ever owned.
Speaker 5 (23:02):
