had to do a podcast. Uh whole Colgan we know
passed away a couple of weeks ago. That was a
huge topic still kind of is, especially in the wrestling
world where you and I are very familiar with, and
it lived in for me pretty much my whole life
since I was eight years.

Old, and Whole was a stable for my people.

Okay, so let's jump into it, because we're going to
talk about the life and times of Whole Colgan, the character.
I don't want to get into Terry Boela or Boila,
thank you, I know his real name.

I don't even know it, like I don't. I don't
want to dabbing.
Speaker 2 (02:58):
Ka fabe, but no, I just want to talk about
what he meant to wrestling fans like you and me,
to pop culture in general.

And I really just want to.

Stick to that because if you think about it, when
you when you say the word wrestling, WWEWWF, there's really
only one person that comes to mind, right.
Speaker 1 (03:15):
Number one and number one with a bullet. And I
feel like if we're going to go back in time
during that era of the eighties and nineties that was
filled with like superhero type of personalities. You got your Jordan,
you got Mike Tyson, you had Hulk, Hogan. He was
beyond the sport. He was on Rocky, he was in
Gremlins too. I mean he would be at sporting events

and he would just rip his shirt off for no
reason and the crowd would go crazy. It was just him.
Everybody knew the you know, the twenty four inch pythons,
and he was just a larger than life personality who
broke the mold for the entire genre of wrestling, right
because before that it was it was really niche, and
it was it was territorial. It wasn't even like one company.

It was like the Nordon Side had their regions, south Side,
east side, And because Ohgan, they were able to make
one giant network, which is what we know today. So
everybody that's earning off that wrestling, the Rock, John Cena,
the Undertaker, it all starts and ends with Terry Blea. Yeah,
that's a great point.

That's a great point that that is probably his biggest
legacy is turning this. When you were a wrestling fan,
you had to like be quiet about it because people
would make fun of you.
Speaker 1 (04:23):
I remember being in like elementary school and it wasn't cool, right. Yeah,
he made it cool. He made it mainstream. And he
at one point got so famous. It was kind of
like Jordan and for those that did not live in Chicago,
if you like Jordan and did not live in Chicago,
you were considered a fair weather fan. Hokogan was the same.
It's like, who's a very wrestler, Hokogan? Okay, who do
you really like? Yeah we all like him, Yeah, we

all like him. But if you know wrestling or like
the Ultimate Warrior, but we love Hogogan. So he was like,
you know, he was that gateway guy into what is this?
He was like a superhero. He was like a cartoon
character come to life. He saw these wrestling guys back
in his day. They're all kind of thattter more like
kind of more streets. They're like an average guy, kind

of the average guy, look right. They were like the jobbers,
like they say, just they had guys that were like
garbage men walking in and like getting thrown on top
of like tic TACs and getting lit on fire and
all kinds of stuff. And he came in six' nine
with the giant, music giant, arms ribbing his shirt, off
and every kid was, LIKE i want to be him
WHEN i grow, up, Right.

AND i think what set him. Apart really was the
one thing that nobody really had at the. Time some,
did but not to that. Level it was his, charisma
the person out what wrestling is now in. Life wrestling
now is ninety percent personality and ten percent, wrestlings and
back then it was ninety nine point five, wrestling and
the charisma was just.

too recognizable because if you put a picture Of Hull,
colgan you walked into the street To, chicago and you,

him AND i remember like being just in awe of.
Him so BEFORE i THINK i watched tapes. Afterwards it's
almost like us right now watching video of Like DOCTOR
J like it wasn't a round for. Him but now
THAT i, watch it's pretty. Good but you can see

what wrestling was and how it was like kind of
like they were they built their model After andre The.
Giant it was like everybody's got these, territories and Then
andre The giant was this one. Guy she was just, like,
hey we saw this guy that's like this, big and
he would go to different territories and they would all
make money off of, them and their main guy in
their territory would like lose To andre would get some

licks in and they would get like it was an.
Attraction it was.

It it was the circus coming to your, town and
that circus was on the wonder of the.

World and Then hulkgan came along and it was like
we no longer got to worry just About. Andre this,
Dude hulkogan has the, personality he's got the masique he
looks and he just looked like a movie. Star he
walked and he was In Rocky so that usshered everybody
else that he was In rocky, three and it was
just like it was like a larger than the.

Presence hulkamania came out and it really changed the business
because there wasn't A WrestleMania. First, no people don't realize
it Was huolkamania Created. WrestleMania, yes and once you Have,
WrestleMania now we're on a national. Platform we've got people
going to closed circuits to watch pay per views because
there was no pay per view at the time or
it was very hard to.

Do they went from everybody gathering at the vfwsis, guys
now they're selling out ninety three thousand seed stadiums at
the In detroit and all over the. COUNTRY i, Mean
hogan sold Out Madison Square garden three times and that
was like wrestling is doing.

What, yeah he made a lot of. Money he made
a lot Of he made a lot of money in the.
Eighties he made a lot of money in the, nineties
which we'll talk about here in a. Second BUT i
want to go back to because you kept saying he
was like a real life. Superhero, yes and at that,
time if you think about it as, kids we were
like the perfect age for. It we had, superheroes we Had,
superman we Had, batman we had, cartoons, uh you, know G, I, Joe.

Transformers but this was a real human being and this
character was in real.

Life and LIKE i, said it followed. Suit Mike tyson
was also of this superhuman, level And Michael jordan was
of that superhuman. Level and we were in that time
where if you were big in your, sport you just
had this marketability and this. Aura and like you, said
wrestling was such a. Niche it's like WHAT ufc is right.
NOW ufc has yet to have that Whole cogan experience

where everyone's, LIKE i want to be everything with. Girls,
yeah that's the. Guy And hogan shattered all of. It
he was so good that other people were competing to
try to take away the money he started. Making so for,
us LIKE i, said WHEN i was six or seven
years old and you heard that, music you, know the
Real american would come on and he would come in
and rip it his shirt off and doing the thing
to the. Crowd you're, like this is gonna be. Amazing

and he even did that thing in the ring where
for the first ten minutes he gets his butt cacked
and in the end he just he hole gets, Out
he gets all hulked up and, yeah he gets all
gets all like this and then he. Destroys everybody wins the,
match does some, cheering it gets, out and you you
got your money's, worth and it was.

Wrestling it was perfect for us because we were young
and pretty stupid and like the formula for his.

i went to our. SHOWS i grew up In connectic

so you could see these guys and you would just
SEE hogi come out and he was like a. Building
the guy was just humendously, strong, tall that blonde, hair
that beach blonde bleached blonde, hair and you're just, like
what AM i? Seeing? What what an aura of a
person That i've seen on? Television now here he is
and he knew how to made the charismal. Work he

knew how to get the crown of. All he was
good with the. Kids it was just a formula for.

one the first one In, vegas and for the reason
was we were like super, broke so we couldn't get
the pay per view the night, before SO i had to,

i have to go to can't wait to Ask clint
what happened in the main event last, night which wasn't.

wrestlers are like in real, life they're. Done so the
fact that he actually lived to his seventies outlived like
ninety five percent of, wrestlers and the life that they,
lived and three hundred and sixty five days a year

YEAR i think they're not. Wrestling and If vince McMahon
could have put those the rest of history on, there
he would. Have and the fact that he made it

be so, mad AND i remember being Like WrestleMania six

When hogan And Ultimate warrior were. WRESTLING i remember that
was like the last TIME i was so serious about.
IT i just stayed in the corner watching. It you're,
nervous so NERVOUS i was at the. Time The warrior
was like he was my new. Guy yeah he. Was
WHEN i was, following we were ready to move. On
but that when get, LOST i was LIKE i kind
of feel LIKE i turned on that GUY i. Love,

warrior got. It i'm LIKE i really liked.

wanted more and more and couldn't get all that we

when the rent when they were, done like maybe three
or four months, later you could rent the video of

all your friends would come, over and because we were
all watching If fuzzy were, Like so that's what that looked.
LIKE i don't know how we did.

some reason we ordered those, papers figured out a way

huge topic still kind of is, especially in the wrestling
world where you and I are very familiar with, and
it lived in for me pretty much my whole life
since I was eight years.

Old, and Whole was a stable for my people.
Speaker 2 (02:39):
Okay, so let's jump into it, because we're going to
talk about the life and times of Whole Colgan, the character.
I don't want to get into Terry Boela or Boila,
thank you, I know his real name.
Speaker 1 (02:50):
I don't even know it, like I don't. I don't
want to dabbing.
Speaker 2 (02:58):
Ka fabe, but no, I just want to talk about
what he meant to wrestling fans like you and me,
to pop culture in general.
Speaker 1 (03:05):
And I really just want to.
Speaker 2 (03:07):
Stick to that because if you think about it, when
you when you say the word wrestling, WWEWWF, there's really
only one person that comes to mind, right.
Speaker 1 (03:15):
Number one and number one with a bullet. And I
feel like if we're going to go back in time
during that era of the eighties and nineties that was
filled with like superhero type of personalities. You got your Jordan,
you got Mike Tyson, you had Hulk, Hogan. He was
beyond the sport. He was on Rocky, he was in
Gremlins too. I mean he would be at sporting events
(03:37):
and he would just rip his shirt off for no
reason and the crowd would go crazy. It was just him.
Everybody knew the you know, the twenty four inch pythons,
and he was just a larger than life personality who
broke the mold for the entire genre of wrestling, right
because before that it was it was really niche, and
it was it was territorial. It wasn't even like one company.
(03:58):
It was like the Nordon Side had their regions, south Side,
east side, And because Ohgan, they were able to make
one giant network, which is what we know today. So
everybody that's earning off that wrestling, the Rock, John Cena,
the Undertaker, it all starts and ends with Terry Blea. Yeah,
that's a great point.
Speaker 2 (04:16):
That's a great point that that is probably his biggest
legacy is turning this. When you were a wrestling fan,
you had to like be quiet about it because people
would make fun of you.
Speaker 1 (04:23):
I remember being in like elementary school and it wasn't cool, right. Yeah,
he made it cool. He made it mainstream. And he
at one point got so famous. It was kind of
like Jordan and for those that did not live in Chicago,
if you like Jordan and did not live in Chicago,
you were considered a fair weather fan. Hokogan was the same.
It's like, who's a very wrestler, Hokogan? Okay, who do
you really like? Yeah we all like him, Yeah, we

all like him. But if you know wrestling or like
the Ultimate Warrior, but we love Hogogan. So he was like,
you know, he was that gateway guy into what is this?
He was like a superhero. He was like a cartoon
character come to life. He saw these wrestling guys back
in his day. They're all kind of thattter more like
kind of more streets. They're like an average guy, kind

of the average guy, look right. They were like the jobbers,
like they say, just they had guys that were like
garbage men walking in and like getting thrown on top
of like tic TACs and getting lit on fire and
all kinds of stuff. And he came in six' nine
with the giant, music giant, arms ribbing his shirt, off
and every kid was, LIKE i want to be him
WHEN i grow, up, Right.
Speaker 2 (05:23):
AND i think what set him. Apart really was the
one thing that nobody really had at the. Time some,
did but not to that. Level it was his, charisma
the person out what wrestling is now in. Life wrestling
now is ninety percent personality and ten percent, wrestlings and
back then it was ninety nine point five, wrestling and
the charisma was just.

Him he was it?

Right and you, SAID i like the word you, said
too recognizable because if you put a picture Of Hull,
colgan you walked into the street To, chicago and you,
know nineteen eighty, seven youdn't have to see one wrestling

walk in the street with The Brooklyn brawler and everyone, was,
actually what that?

him AND i remember like being just in awe of.
Him so BEFORE i THINK i watched tapes. Afterwards it's
almost like us right now watching video of Like DOCTOR
J like it wasn't a round for. Him but now
THAT i, watch it's pretty. Good but you can see

what wrestling was and how it was like kind of
like they were they built their model After andre The.
Giant it was like everybody's got these, territories and Then
andre The giant was this one. Guy she was just, like,
hey we saw this guy that's like this, big and
he would go to different territories and they would all
make money off of, them and their main guy in
their territory would like lose To andre would get some

licks in and they would get like it was an.
Attraction it was.

It it was the circus coming to your, town and
that circus was on the wonder of the.

World and Then hulkgan came along and it was like
we no longer got to worry just About. Andre this,
Dude hulkogan has the, personality he's got the masique he
looks and he just looked like a movie. Star he
walked and he was In Rocky so that usshered everybody
else that he was In rocky, three and it was
just like it was like a larger than the.

Presence hulkamania came out and it really changed the business
because there wasn't A WrestleMania. First, no people don't realize
it Was huolkamania Created. WrestleMania, yes and once you Have,
WrestleMania now we're on a national. Platform we've got people
going to closed circuits to watch pay per views because
there was no pay per view at the time or
it was very hard to.

Do they went from everybody gathering at the vfwsis, guys
now they're selling out ninety three thousand seed stadiums at
the In detroit and all over the. COUNTRY i, Mean
hogan sold Out Madison Square garden three times and that
was like wrestling is doing.

What, yeah he made a lot of. Money he made
a lot Of he made a lot of money in the.
Eighties he made a lot of money in the, nineties
which we'll talk about here in a. Second BUT i
want to go back to because you kept saying he
was like a real life. Superhero, yes and at that,
time if you think about it as, kids we were
like the perfect age for. It we had, superheroes we Had,
superman we Had, batman we had, cartoons, uh you, know G, I, Joe.

Transformers but this was a real human being and this
character was in real.

Life and LIKE i, said it followed. Suit Mike tyson
was also of this superhuman, level And Michael jordan was
of that superhuman. Level and we were in that time
where if you were big in your, sport you just
had this marketability and this. Aura and like you, said
wrestling was such a. Niche it's like WHAT ufc is right.
NOW ufc has yet to have that Whole cogan experience

where everyone's, LIKE i want to be everything with. Girls,
yeah that's the. Guy And hogan shattered all of. It
he was so good that other people were competing to
try to take away the money he started. Making so for,
us LIKE i, said WHEN i was six or seven
years old and you heard that, music you, know the
Real american would come on and he would come in
and rip it his shirt off and doing the thing
to the. Crowd you're, like this is gonna be. Amazing

and he even did that thing in the ring where
for the first ten minutes he gets his butt cacked
and in the end he just he hole gets, Out
he gets all hulked up and, yeah he gets all
gets all like this and then he. Destroys everybody wins the,
match does some, cheering it gets, out and you you
got your money's, worth and it was.

Wrestling it was perfect for us because we were young
and pretty stupid and like the formula for his.

i went to our. SHOWS i grew up In connectic

so you could see these guys and you would just

the guy was just humendously, strong, tall that blonde, hair
that beach blonde bleached blonde, hair and you're just, like

person That i've seen on? Television now here he is
and he knew how to made the charismal. Work he

good with the. Kids it was just a formula for.

what happened in the main event last, night which wasn't.

was like the last TIME i was so serious about.
IT i just stayed in the corner watching. It you're,
nervous so NERVOUS i was at the. Time The warrior
was like he was my new. Guy yeah he. Was

but that when get, LOST i was LIKE i kind
of feel LIKE i turned on that GUY i. Love,

all your friends would come, over and because we were
all watching If fuzzy were, Like so that's what that looked.
