What a great year for movies! In 2003 we were given such cinematic masterpeices as 'Dumb and Dumberer" and "Stuck on You". Sadly neither made it on Brady or Dan's list of the top 3 films of the year. Listen to the podcast and let them know who won the 2003 Movie Draft. And feel free to add your favorite(s) if they didn't make the list. Thanks for listening friends!

Speaker 1 (00:00):
E. Welcome, This is Brady one More Time. I'll look
back on all things nineties and two thousands, the movies,
Buddy hel what's your favorite color for that down? Hello,
the music and.

Speaker 2 (00:19):
The winner is the biscuit, the awkwardness.

Speaker 1 (00:25):
There's a new pet. Here's your host, Brady Broski. But
but Brady, Welcome, Welcome, Welcome, Welcome, the deepest dive into
all things nineties and two thousands. Welcome to the Brady
one More Time Podcast. I would be your host. If
my voice sounds familiar, you may have heard it on

(00:47):
some great radio stations across the country, like Casey won
on one New Haven, Connecticut, the New Mixed one of
two point nine, Dallas fourth, and of course here in
America's greatest city, Chicago, one of three point five. Kiss
f Yeah, I'm Brady Broski and with me once again.
Here he is standing across from me. He's the kickball King,
a guy who loves talking about fashion.

Speaker 2 (01:10):
God loves it's the sort.

Speaker 1 (01:13):
And he who can do. And I've noticed this for
going on ten years. The best Steve Harvey impression of anyone.
Doctor Dan Ginsberg is here.

Speaker 2 (01:22):
What up?

Speaker 1 (01:23):
How you doing? It's good to see you over the weekend.
Great to see you at your Utica party. Yeah, it's
a it's a hybrid Hanukkah slash family feud party obviously.

Speaker 2 (01:36):
Yeah, Steve Harvey family Feud Hankkah. There's more Richard Dawson,
I would say than Steve Harvey.

Speaker 1 (01:42):
But well no, I think it's more ninety So who
would that be? Combs Ray Combs l r P. Yeah,
but you you throw a big party every year for
Hanukah and we all come and we play the family feud.
But the but the caveat is it's the family fuge
very appropriate for this podcast. Really, we should really just
do an episode of that. We should do the Family
Feudica live, Like, just bring our equipment to your party.

(02:05):
Let's do it.

Speaker 2 (02:06):
Uh yeah, but no, it's nineties theme because the game
that you have that we play a childhood game from
when I was eight. I got here's a gift, like
a TV note plus into your TV. So the actual
game was just a board game that you slid little
clues into and you pulled out these plastic things to
reveal them. Right then I took those clues and I
put them into this very antiquated software that has all

(02:28):
the original like graphics, sound effects, music from the nineteen
ninety It's amazing.

Speaker 1 (02:34):
You do a great job and we have so we
have so much fun. And the best part is you
have to think like you're back in the nineties, like really,
really be cancel culture before it got canceled.

Speaker 2 (02:44):
Because the answers are a lot it's they would they
would not fly today. Yeah, there's there's some It was
a different time. It was a different time. You missed
the most important part. Uh, you failed fast money.

Speaker 1 (02:57):
Your wife won it. I know the wifey my smoke
has brag writes she does. Yes, she's better at things
than me all the time. So that did not surprise me.
But uh, here we go. All right, are you ready
to talk fashion? Fashion? Help? You're ready? This is our
fashion episode. We've been putting it off for way too long.
But you know what, too bad because we're not talking
for what not today? Sorry, Oh no, you're gonna have

(03:19):
to cross off your notes because instead I'm just gonna
go on the fly. Here. It's the topic we're doing.
We are going to uh, we're gonna go past the millennium. Okay,
We're gonna go to two thousand and three, and we
are gonna have the two thousand and three movie draft. Okay,
the movie draft, which is this is your expertise? Really,
because I don't think we've mentioned this. This would be

(03:40):
a good time to mention that you actually help determine
like directors and movies ands and actress win a SAG award.
I do. I have a part for the Screen Actors
Guild Awards every year. That's amazing.

Speaker 2 (03:52):
It doesn't make sense because I'm not in any form
of movie critic, but yeah, you know I I work
over on the Traffic and Weather to vision of iHeartMedia,
Total Traffic and Weather Network and our staff here in
Chicago and Saint Louis, our union through SAG.

Speaker 1 (04:07):
After.

Speaker 2 (04:07):
People know SAG but they may not realize After After
involves TV and radio talent. And I was a member
of After when I was on air traffic reporter. I
now manage people who do that and am still you know,
a member getting a ballot and getting screeners that they
actually arrived today.

Speaker 1 (04:28):
Yeah, what are the odds? So okay, so just walk
me through because it's very interesting to me. So you
do you apply for it? Do you have to just
automatically part of it.

Speaker 2 (04:36):
If you are in a job that is a union job,
that's that's SAG after. As your union, you have a
vote for the Screen Actors Build Awards. You know, you
pay your dues and you like, like if in any
union you pay dues and you get certain benefits with that,
and for SAG after, you get a vote for the
SAG Awards every year.

Speaker 1 (04:54):
It's a lot of people, though, it is it's a.

Speaker 2 (04:56):
I mean, most of them are actors primarily in you know,
LA and New York, some scattered through Chicago. But then yeah,
you do have you have some TV and radio people too,
which makes me nervous.

Speaker 1 (05:06):
And here's why, because radio people aren't very we aren't
very serious people over here. What if you just wanted
to screw up the system and like vote for the.

Speaker 2 (05:14):
Worst movies, Well, I don't think we'd have enough votes
to overcome all the actual actors. But it is funny
when you know, I sit around with my you know,
employees and teammates talking about movies and TV and debating
who we're going to vote for as if we are
you know, determining right experts on the you're gonna be down.

Speaker 1 (05:31):
On the envelope, who yeah, how long have you been?

Speaker 2 (05:34):
You know, they don't have to mandle in an envelope anymore.
How long have you been part of I think this
is my eighth year. That's crazy, Okay, and you get
to it in. The cool part is you get to
watch all the movies they get sent to you.

Speaker 1 (05:44):
Yep. You get screeners, the big like the ones nominated for.

Speaker 2 (05:48):
Like Best Cast. You'll get actual DVDs for movies and TV.
Sometimes they'll send you whole seasons, Oh my god, on
DVD and then yeah you can the rest you get
did So this is right up your alley. Here, we're
talking movies. You're a big movie I am. I was
not a member of SAG in two thousand and three,
but you're probably in college. I was, and I was
a what junior sophomore in college? Okay, that's great, you

(06:09):
just graduated. No, no, no, Dan, I was a part of
the six year planned over all, that's right. Yeah, I
took my time. Yeah, that's what I'm not a doctor.
I was technically too, because I just lolly gathered around
Madison for another four years working in radio after I graduated,
which I was kind of on the eight year plan.

Speaker 1 (06:24):
I was trying to for long being a prolonged being
a member of society for as long as ye say. So,
here we go. So we're gonna do the way it's
gonna work is similar to other drafts. I'm gonna go,
then you go. We're gonna have three rounds. We each pick,
and then the listeners decide who won the draft? Okay, ready?
Which the last draft is? The Toy Draft? Yes, seemed

(06:45):
about fifty fifty. Yeah, I think it was slightly you're
being generous. I think it was slightly skewed. Here's the
thing about the Toy Draft. I think the people that
liked my picks really like me. They were passionate, almost
violently passionate. The people that like Georgie liked them.

Speaker 2 (06:59):
Well, you know, the Magic the Gathering fans may not
be the most socious. I'm sorry, that's mean. I take
it back.

Speaker 1 (07:08):
I love you Magic fans. Okay, so let's jump into it.
Number one pick overall ball. This is two thousand and three,
which I did my research about an hour ago, and
I discovered that damn, what a year from movie it
really was.

Speaker 2 (07:23):
When you told me two thousand and three movies, I mean,
you know, to let you behind the curtain.

Speaker 1 (07:28):
I did know we weren't going to talk about fashion today, but.

Speaker 2 (07:30):
When you told me two thousand and three movies, I
was like, that is a very very narrow topic. And
then when I started looking at what movies came out
in two thousand and three, it was.

Speaker 1 (07:41):
Like, wow, Wow, what a year. Yeah, so a number
one overall. I have to go with this movie because
it kind of started it all. It started kind of
like a subgenre of comedy. A bunch of cast members
would go on to do comedy after comedy together. It
was two thousand and three my number one over all.
Pick Old School, Okay, that was one of mine. Second Okay,

(08:07):
I stole it. So I knew we knew we were
gonna steal it. There's gonna be something. There's so many movies, okay,
so humor, and that was just such a cut. We're
going streaking in the quad. So it's so quotable. It
is so Frank the tank, the character. I mean, that
really was kind of Will Ferrell's almost coming out party
as a as a movie actor. Really, yeah, because he
just left left snl yep. I mean you have a

(08:29):
camel cameo from Stiffler that's right, propelled Todd Phillips, great
actor that he was a part of the Hangover movies
and the Star is Born. Yeah, like I said, it
was like a comedy click beginning the Vince Vaughns, the
the Olsoen guys, the Ohlsoen brothers, you know, even Steve
Carrell would would eventually join. So I really think Old

(08:50):
School on its own hilarious, super funny, but it kind
of started that brand of humor with that click, with
that core group. So I'm to go with my number
one pick in the two thousand and three movie Draft
is Old School. What's yours?

Speaker 2 (09:06):
I'm gonna go in a different direction and be a
little bit of a sap here.

Speaker 1 (09:10):
But one of my favorite movies of all time is
Love Actually. Love Actually is actually one of your favorite movies?

Speaker 2 (09:18):
Is actually Holiday movie? It's a holiday movie. It's yeah,
it's there's a lot of Christs, I mean, Christmas is
going on. There's a song about Christmas, Christmas going.

Speaker 1 (09:27):
On throughout the movie.

Speaker 2 (09:28):
There's like I want to say, like eight or nine
different storylines going on throughout that movie. So it's jumping
all around. I don't know, I don't know if it's
a nostalgia thing. I just I remember seeing that in
a little local Madison theater and loving it, and then
I bought bought the DVD and it was just it's
just such a classic movie. Love actually is your number
one pick. I need you to dig deep here, Dan.

Speaker 1 (09:50):
Yes, when you were in this Madison movie theater, were
you watching Love actually by yourself?

Speaker 2 (09:55):
No, I was with well my I was going to
say girlfriend, but that was never a term we used.
You know, college is complicated, and and my other roommate.
This is very random, but a dude from who was
a star on the Wisconsin men's basketball team at the
time was there with us because I knew him through

(10:17):
another friend who was in a frat or with in
a sorority with his fiance. Anyway, Wow, there's a whole
group of us.

Speaker 1 (10:26):
I'm here for the gang bang. No, that's a quote
from old school. Oh thank you for that. I wasn't
talking about your movie experience and the friends right that
I had. I just remembered a quote, so I shouted
it out. What you learned English? Do you know what
the reply to that is?

Speaker 2 (10:41):
Just in cases, No, it's a touching moment at the
end when they both learned each other's language because they
couldn't speak to each other.

Speaker 1 (10:49):
Okay, if you were to paint a picture of the
anti love actually movie Watcher, you're looking at you? All right,
Well that's part of that movie. All I want for
Christmas is you.

Speaker 2 (10:58):
At the end, he's playing the drums and and the
girl he likes points at him. He thinks he's special,
and then she points.

Speaker 1 (11:06):
At everybody else. Got it? Little plot twist my number
two pick. Yes, I'm originally from New England. Yes you are.
Can't can't let go, can't let go to the of
the roots. I'm Brady for a reason. Impossible not to
have this movie on my list. Mystic River. Oh wow, okay,
do you recall I recall I don't know that I've

(11:27):
ever seen it. Wow, if you've got three hours, sure,
it's like two and a half, a little over two
and a half, I mean typical crime drama slow, but
still it's it goes by quick. A lot of Boston
things in it. Clint Eastwood directed. I think Clint Eastwood
did the soundtrack too. They did the score, which I

(11:48):
think he did for the first time. But yeah, it's
it's got Boston written all over Tim Robbins and Sean
Penn both won actors Okay awards Best Actor and Supporting
So yeah, I got to go Mystic River, Super great
crime drama, suspense, All Things Boston. That's my number two pick.

Speaker 2 (12:08):
Okay, well, apparently the jew on the show is sticking
with the Christmas theme. Yeah, because I'm going to go
with a similarly critically acclaimed movie that won numerous Oscars, Elf,
the movie Elf.

Speaker 1 (12:23):
You're being sarcastic. Elf did not win any awards. No,
but before, can you name the four main food groups? Okay?

Speaker 2 (12:32):
Yeah, sugar, no syrup, that is one syrup, candy yeap,
candy canes, yeah you're clut, candy something else, candy corns,
candy corn.

Speaker 1 (12:46):
There you go.

Speaker 2 (12:47):
All right, I mean just a classic Christmas move movie obviously.
I mean it was in our intro What a year
for Will Ferrell? Right, so started the year offer. I
think Old School was probably close it out with Elf.

Speaker 1 (13:00):
I remember seeing Elf with the girlfriend at the time,
and my best friend was the three of us.

Speaker 2 (13:05):
He was always the thirty feel so she was officially
your girlfriend. It wasn't a weird it wasn't sit.

Speaker 1 (13:10):
Its not like you were two thousand and three. I
was being very serious with my life and like you, Dan, Yeah,
So the three of us saw it with kind of
no expectations because we thought we were going to a
somewhat kids movie, right, Yeah.

Speaker 2 (13:25):
I feel like if you watched the trailers and the ads,
it probably felt that way. It felt that way because
he's an adult acting like a kid. So it's like,
it's gonna be cute Christmas. Y, let's just go see it.

Speaker 1 (13:35):
And we got the I mean, yes, it's a family movie,
but really so much adult humor. And yeah, Elf is
so good. People put Elf in their mount rushmore of
oh yeah movies. So yeah, that's a great number. Two.
There you go. And my last and final pick of
the twenty two thousand and three movie draft is this one.
Might say, this one might surprise you. Okay, we're going another.

(13:57):
We're going another suspenseful movie. This one was. This one
was based on a true story, which I love, based
on true stories. Charlie in a Monster, do you recall
the monster? I don't. I have not seen two of
your three picks, which is wild. Yeah, you got some
you got some work to do. Normally I would tell

(14:18):
you to take an edible, but these were just watched
sober the list of things where we already have Yeah, yeah,
I know. The Monster it was. It was kind of Charlie's.
It was kind of the performance of her career one
best actress. She portrayed a prostitute who murdered her clients.
Oh wow, okay, yeah, and it was incredible. It was.

(14:40):
It was very interesting. I mean, it's like I said,
it's based on true story and any I feel like
any movie you can sympathize with a murderer. It's good
storytelling and in great acting because you end up you know,
she's the heroin.

Speaker 2 (14:53):
But also inside her mind and what she was dealing
with the letter to that.

Speaker 1 (14:58):
Yeah, so that's my number three. Probably didn't see that coming,
so I did not. The Monster is my number three.

Speaker 2 (15:05):
You only stole one of mine, thankfully. A couple quick
honorable mentions Finding Nemo almost made the cut.

Speaker 1 (15:10):
Finding Nemos two thousand and three, I see that damn.

Speaker 2 (15:15):
Too fast, too furious, Another Men too yep, But I'm
gonna go.

Speaker 1 (15:21):
With uh a chick flick for my third pick. Okay.

Speaker 2 (15:25):
I saw quite recently How to Lose a Guy in
Ten Days? Another good one. And iconic Princess Sophia want
to come out and play. How about the movie soundtrack.
There's some good songs on there, songs on that. Yeah,
that was probably the biggest.

Speaker 1 (15:38):
I mean, that's rom coms as rom com as it gets.
That's probably the biggest rom com one of the biggest
of the decade.

Speaker 2 (15:45):
It's Yeah, and it's Scott staying power. I mean, I
feel like you still see that referenced and you still
see it on to this day.

Speaker 1 (15:51):
Okay, So just to recap my top three Old School
Mystic River and The Monster, and then you have well
you stole old school for me. So I've got one.

Speaker 2 (16:03):
I've got Love actually Elf and How to Lose a
Guy in Ten Days.

Speaker 1 (16:08):
This is very eclectic mix. It's a very all over
the place. I got some honorable mentions for you too.
You saw Mighty that was O three. Oh wow? Okay, Uh.
American Wedding, Yeah, the final, the final American Wedding movie.
I remember, Yeah, all of those there's that there were
like I.

Speaker 2 (16:26):
Think there's a TV dumb DVD only ones actual final, Yeah,
I remember that was the I think third and final
of the like big ones that like when we were
of if you're of a certain age, if you're in
your forties listening to this podcast, you were like going
to the theater the day those movies.

Speaker 1 (16:42):
Came out, and then keeping on the holiday theme, you
added Elf and Love Actually, Bad Santa, I mean Billy Bob.

Speaker 2 (16:49):
Yeah, what a holiday season had? Alf, Love Actually, and
Bad Santa all in O three.

Speaker 1 (16:55):
But but my most favorite of all the honorable mentions.
I should have put it in my top three, but
I went with critically like movies winners instead. Dumb and
Dumber Er. Okay, I was gonna say, there's no way
Dumb and Dumber was no three. Dumb and dumber Er.
I'm a huge dumb and dumber fan, as we were
dumb and dumb, dumb and dumb number Alloween. Dumb and
Dumber err was terrible. The first time I saw it,

(17:20):
I went with my brother. We were so excited. We're like,
even though you know when a you know, a sequel
comes out that doesn't that is not necessary. It was
one of those we were still so m.

Speaker 2 (17:29):
Not like they left some you know, plot holes that
they needed to fill out at all.

Speaker 1 (17:34):
I left there disappointed, but knowing I would be disappointed.
Then I watch it again and again and again. I
was after digging in edible. So maybe a couple of drinks.
But yeah, dumb and dumber er highly underrated. So there
we go. We have our we have our draft picks.
We'll put them up. You gotta let us know how

(17:54):
we did two thousand and three. Crazy. I mean, you
can keep going on and not a year? What a year?
I feel like we don't have movie. Your school of
rock is another one school of rock.

Speaker 2 (18:03):
Yeah, I mean there's a good fifteen twenty movies that
are referenced all the time.

Speaker 1 (18:07):
In twenty twenty five that came out, and so let
us know how we did. Next week we're gonna talk
about fashion. Nah. I can't wait to do that. Until then,
you can follow along, make sure you like subscribe all
the things you do to podcasts, and I'm on.

Speaker 2 (18:25):
Instagram at Brady Radio at dan GE's zero four eight
to two.

Speaker 1 (18:30):
Yeah, and let us know how we did on the
draft over on the socials and we'll talk to you
next time later
