am here with doctor Shakika Williams ofsky Rose Rejuvenation Clinic and Spa. How
are you today? I am great. I cannot complain amazing, glad to

have you here. So we needto talk about sky Rose, but first
we need to talk a little bitabout the history. So tell me a
little bit more about why you startedthe business, like what inspired it?
So, what inspired it is?I am a doctor of prepared nurse practitioner
and so I wanted my own privatepractice for medical purposes. How sky Rose

SPO came along is I wanted tooffer botox and things like that to my
patients for medical indications such as migraines, hype of five drosies, TMJ pain.
When in order to offer that,I have to learn the esthetic side
of things, and so when Itook the class for that, it just
really intrigued me and I wanted toknow more, and so I just kind
of dive hit first and just keptgoing and so got a mentor. We

worked together for about six months.The initial thing was just to go in
and get information about how to starta business, but in six months we
burke Skyroll, So it was justkind of like it just happened. God
said this is the way you're going, and that's the way I went.
And so you have Skyros, RegiminationClinic, and spot Nice. So just
kind of like jumping into it wasthat like scary at all. I know

when people first start businesses, theykind of have this like, yeah,
I want to do it, butit's also a little bit of like ooh,
whoa, this is a lot.It was really scary because, as
I mentioned, when I first metmy mentor, I had no idea that
I was going to actually be openingmy business six months later. My intention
when I went to her informational wasjust to get information how to be a

business owner, how to do entrepreneurship, leadership, things like that, and
then I signed up for her mentorshipthat she offered at the end of the
informational and we were meeting once amonth and things of that nature. Oh
sorry, we were meeting once amonth, things of that nature. And
as we were meeting, she wastelling me, you know, do this,
do your LLC do this, andso as we were going along with
it, it was it was scarybecause I knew nothing. I have an

MBA, but I didn't know whenI was going to use it. I
just knew eventually I would use it, So it was definitely scary. But
when you have someone that is gearedleading you and they have done it and
so it's like you're following in theirfootsteps, it kind of took away from
that anxiety that I was having tohave that person that I was kind of
leaning on, and then just beingwho I am too of a very go
(02:35):
getter, so it's like, Okay, I love challenges and this is a
huge challenge and I am going toconquer it. And so overall, I
think I did pretty well, butstill a lot, still a lot,
still learning a lot every day.So but I'm grateful I did it.
I'm grateful i'm here. I havehelped a lot of people from the SPA
came my academy, so I alsotrained nationally, so I've been helping a

lot of nurses and doctors to getinto the industry as well. So I've
been able to open up a lotof doors, not just for treating my
clients, but also for students aswell. That's amazing. I really think
when you you have a gift andyou learn from somebody else and then you
keep passing it along, I reallythink that's what it's all about at the
end of the day. Yeah,and I love that. So it just

it opened up so many doors justtaking that leap, that leap of faith
and just and I just I keepbuilding on it day by day. So
I don't know a lot. Iknow enough, but it's a lot that
we still don't know. And Ialways say, even if in the end,
I feel like you know what thisisn't it, I'm coming out with
so many new skills that I didn'thave. I'm a whole marketer. Now
(03:38):
I do CPA, I do bookkeeping, and I'm a whole a nurse.
But now I can do all thosethings. So you do leave with a
lot of skill sets that you didn'thave coming in as an entrepreneur. That's
good. That's always good to have. Like well, I would say,
yeah, have the skill sets andthen constantly expand on them and constantly learning
every day. As you said,you know enough, but you can always
know more exactly exactly, So agreethat's amazing, and so talking about that,

how like what other challenges did yougo through when you first started the
clinic and spa and how did youget over them. So the industry I'm
in, it can be very verycut through a lot of gatekeeping. So
just kind of really honing in onmindset. So I do a lot of
personal development just because it's it's reallytough. Being an entrepreneur is not easy.
(04:25):
It's not for the faint. Justmaking you know, some of the
things that I've experienced as far asas you stated, spending too much money
in the wrong places, you know, investing or buying capital or or not
having a capitalver before any equip pieceof equipment, so like buying big too
fast, expanding too fast. Sothose are just some of the things that

I've had run into that now andmy my externship, my mentorship that I
offer to my students, those aresome of the things that I cover with
them, like you don't want toyou know, go too fast, too
soon. So it was a strugglejust learning those things because a lot of
for me was falling on my faceand getting back up because there was so
many people that were gatekeeping that youcouldn't reach out to, or that you
(05:10):
would reach out to and wouldn't wantto give you the information, maybe because
you're too close in proximity to them, so they look at you their competition.
So I end up finding my communityto say the last. And it's
amazing when you do have a communityof people that you can bounce things off
of that's not intimidated because you're inthe same industry right per se. So
just being able to have that communityto lean on personal development and just having

my coaches and my mentor to alsolean on, I think got me over
a lot of the hurdles or evenjust the imposture syndrome like oh am I,
you know, to be in frontof people telling them to do this
and do that, and they're listeningto me, and then it's like,
do am I really capable or youknow, supposed to be doing this?
So being able to get over thatas well is always a struggle too,
(05:54):
because it's like a lot of myclose people in my inner circles say I
don't give myself enough credit, likeI don't at a find myself the way
I should. Yeah, did theysay, like you're too humble? Yep?
Too humble. Well, hey,we're doing the best we can,
yes, ma'am. And what wouldyou say The mission of Skyrose is the
mission is just to help to instillconfidence back into those that feel like they

have lost it because they are takingcare of others, not putting themselves first.
I actually have someone in my inboxas we speak that don't know,
but I'm hosting a training in Caliin a couple of weeks and she wants
to be a model and her storyis like it touched me to the point
(06:39):
like I'm gonna do a pro bonobecause she's been she lost mother, father's
son, all within the last couplemonths, her three year olds, right,
and she says she's been taking careof everyone else but herself and she's
just ready to smile again. Andthat's what we do it for, and
so just to be able to andit's like, yes, we'd get people
that come in and just want maintenancefacials, but a lot of the treatments
(07:00):
we offer, like really make ahuge difference in someone's life who has not
stepped outside in months because they're ashamed of some marks on their face,
or maybe they gain weight so nowthey have double chin or something like that.
So it's not always about being vain, but our treatments actually help to
instill and just regain that confidence forpeople who lost it. So that's pretty

much our goal. That's a beautifulthing because confidence is so easily lost and
not as easily regained, so it'snice that you all are there to like
help them regain that. And it'sjust kind of giving them the escape away
from everyday life when they come there. We try to just give them an
experience, the luxury spy experience.Everyone is family, you know. I
(07:43):
have clients that come and she broughther daughter with her and she's Me and
her are just talking and her daughterlike you're just she has work to do.
You're sitting here like you're her bestfriend. So much like girl,
we're family. Yeah, but that'show comfortable they feel that they can come
and just you know, like youknow, at the end of the day,
I'm also psych nurse practitioners, Soit's like it turns into a session
because now they're just pouring into likeI need to talk, and so it's
(08:05):
like that's that's what we're there for, to kind of be that space that
they need that they don't get athome because they're the sole provider. So
it's like when they go home,I gotta put this hat on, that
head on, this hat on.So when they come to us, we
want to be that escape for themand be able to just kind of give
a little bit of sunshine into whateverthey may be dealing on dealing with outside
of our doors. And how howimportant do you think providing an experiences when

you're a business, not just youknow, providing a service. It's a
whole different thing. Getting an experienceup there, It's top priority because you
know, I don't want you tothink when you come into my door,
you're just a transaction, you know, And we do see that a lot
with a lot of things, andwe got to get away from it because
yes we are and I'm very transparent. We do have businesses to make money
(08:50):
to you know, get out ofwhatever we may. But at the same
time, I also want you toexperience a certain experience with me. So
I'm going to give you the experiencethat I I would want from someone else's
business that I am going to Sothat's how like, that is my vision,
that is my mission at Skyroll.So I think it's highly important when
you're going especially into spas. Youknow, you don't want to feel like
(09:13):
you're rushed, And it's like I'vebeen into certain places where it's just like
go go, go, go go, but I'm here to get a massage
and I'm still leaving all tents andstress. You were rushing me in and
out. So I think it's important, especially depending on the industry that it
is definitely and talking about like importance. Also the good team I've noticed for
(09:35):
business owners that's always kind of difficult, rocky at the beginning to get your
good team together that you can counton. So how was your experience with
that? Just hit on the sorespot. Sorry, it's hard, honestly,
that is where I am right now. I've hired in the past,
and I'm not, you know,speaking ill of anyone. I had good
(09:56):
people, But I just finished readinga book, Like I said, I'm
very huge on PD and it's calledWho, and it basically teaches you how
to hire your A players. Andso if I had to go back on
everyone that I have hired, theywere more b I had a couple C
players, but I have not hadmy A players. And in order to
get my A players I need toknow what I want and what my vision
(10:18):
emission is for the business so Ican elaborate that to the players. So
I can't put it all on themeither when I didn't know what my vision
was to be able to guide themin the right direction. So I've honestly
said that I put a freeze onhiring right now, and so I have
my scorecards together, I have mydescriptions, my goals, my objectives,
my KPIs for them, because whenI bring them in, I wanted to

be like it's laid out. Youhave no excuse. You can't say I'm
not giving you what you need forus to grow as a team, because
I don't want just one a player. I want my entire team to be
an a team. So I'm like, I'm not hiring part to second quarter
because I don't feel like I havemy stuff together to get my right people
in there. But it is importantto have the right people to especially as
a small business owner. A lotof people come in that we've seen an

interview and they view us as thesehuge organizations and it's like, you're not
going to come in on the bookschedule right now. I need you to
want to grow with me so wecan get there together. And I'm one
hundred percent with them, like,hey, we're not going to be booked
out right now, you know,So this is what I need you to
do. You got to kind ofhelp with the marketing or promoting if you
want the schedule to be booked out, and you're like, yeah, yeah,
(11:22):
I got it, I got it. And then they get in there
and it's just like the hourly wageand W two mentality, like I'm just
coming to work in China. I'mnot going to do anything extra. This
is all I'm here for and I'mclocking down and I'm gone, and it's
like I don't need that, honestly, Yeah, I need you to like
want to be a part of theteam and see my vision and help me
get there. So having that teamand finding that team it's not easy because
(11:45):
you don't want to just hire.I think one of the stats I read
is we are paying two or threetimes the salary to replace someone every time
we have to fire and rehire.Wow. Yeah, So I'm like,
I gotta get it together because Ican't. I mean, I can't let
go a lot of people, butI don't want to even have to go
through that revolving door. So I'mlike, yeah, let me get this
(12:05):
blueprint together so I know exactly whoI'm interviewing and being able to just identify
those red flags doing the interviews becausethey're there. The things that we'd be
like, oh, you know what, that's right, don't matter be the
thing that I end up firing youfor, right, and so I should
have paid attention to it in thebeginning. So I think it's important to
have the right people on your team. Definitely. They have to know your
(12:26):
vision, understand it, and thenshare it for it to be, you
know, to get that longevity outof the success of the overall business.
I agree. I agree with everythingyou just said. So what do you
love the most about your business?I love my people, my clients.
I meet a lot of wonderful people. I'm actually getting emotional because a lot
(12:50):
of my client's portant to me thethings I don't see and myself and I
have one client she constantly sends mejust affirmation things via text and she's like,
this is your year expectations, blahblah. So it's like, just
my clients are amazing. I lovethat because they see what I see.
And to have them as my clients. They're like lifelong clients. So I
(13:11):
love my clients. Yep, youhear that. She loves y'all. She
loves y'all. How do you managethe work life balance? Oh god,
you have to. So I've seta schedule aside where I have like my
calendar where it's like my perfect week. So you have to be intentional about
(13:31):
self care. And so I'm ahuge advocate for self care because i have
three kids. You know, Ihave a twenty two year old, my
seventeen year old will be seventeen Valentine'sDay, and then my daughter's seven.
And my business actually is named afterher. Oh so you love that.
And so to be able to onething that I've learned is I want to
(13:52):
be more present with my kids,especially my two youngest, because they're still
in school. They have events thingslike that. So I had to be
intentional of being okay with not beingokay and taking that time to get back
okay. Yeah. And it's likeI've gone, gone, gone all my
life, Like I've been a foreverstudent. I just finished my doctor at
(14:13):
last May, and right now I'mlike I need something to do because I'm
plays to being in school, sobut having this extra time and having this
business to be able to set itup so it can be my legacy and
give me my time freedom. IsMy goal is to be able to have
time freedom as well as financial freedom, but to be more present with my
family. So I've been very intentionalabout taking self care days. I scheduled
(14:39):
off days, so Sunday Monday we'reclose. Mondays is like my admin days,
and I try my best to domy Sundays at sabag days, so
like no work, maybe just chillingwith the family because things like that.
But you have to be intentional.It's not easy to have the balance,
but you got to be intentional.So if you're intentional, you'll be able
to kind of have that work lifebalance and saying no, like this this
(15:01):
year is the year of no,like I can't be everywhere for everyone anymore.
Like you can invite me and Imay not be able to make it
because I guess what, I justwant to sleep mm hmm, I won't
say that again. Being okay withsaying no and setting boundaries and being intentional
will be how you can do managethat work life balance. I love it.
(15:22):
You're dropping gyms, dropping gyms.Mm hmmm. So my last and
favorite question, what does being brilliantlyblack mean to you? Exceptional? One
of a kind, one of mystudents told me, because my name is
definitely unique. Just being unique,you know, being able to be a
(15:43):
brilliantly black owned woman business in today'sworld is just uh, it's just amazing
in itself. So just being beingblack is beautiful. Say that again,
being black is beautiful. So Ilove it and that means a lot.
And I'm where it proudly and iam all I'm honored to even have won
