Putting the spotlight on chicago Lands growingblack businesses. iHeartMedia Chicago presents the Brilliantly
Black Podcast. Here's our host,Jasmine Bennett. Hello everyone, and welcome
back today. I'm here with DianaTaylor from mom Care Oasis. How are
you today? I'm doing so great, glad to be here and I'm happy
you're here. Thank you for beinghere. So what we really got to
(00:23):
talk about is mom Caare Oasis. And I've heard that you've been doing a
lot of great things to help outmoms because there are I think I was
just looking at some like Mother's Daystatistics and stuff. There are like four
billion moms in the world out ofseven billion people, so there's a lot.
Absolutely, we're everywhere, everywhere, everywhere, and they do so much.
(00:46):
So let's get into mom caare Oasisand what even inspired you to make
something like this? Sure? Somom Care Oasis is a wellness company for
busy moms, and so we dothat by providing support at home, so
we have life coaching. We alsodo our new Mommy Needs a Minute Wellness
(01:06):
emotional self care kit and then wego into her job and actually help different
women with wellness workshops. Team buildingretreats the entire company, so men benefit
two. But the way we gotstarted was actually my own story. So
back in twenty sixteen, just picturethis. I am working a full time
job, I have three small kidsfive under five, while managing the home
(01:30):
busy in my church community. Andthen I'm the family member everyone calls when
they need stuff. You know.Twenty sixteen, I was doing all the
things, and then I found outI was pregnant with baby number four.
Wow. So I had a breakdown, like a mental break. And it
wasn't until another woman came to meand said, what are you doing?
Why are you trying to do itby yourself? Yeah, And I had
(01:52):
a kind of this pivotal point wheream I gonna be honest and tell her
like what's really going on? Oram I just kind of you know,
by I'm good, that's what wedo. And I decided to take the
path of vulnerability, and I toldher everything that was going on, and
she says, Superwoman doesn't exist. You need help, right, And that
was the seed for mom Caroasis. And you know, I took some big
(02:14):
steps afterwards. But you know,we can get into that later if you
want to. But that was reallyhow it got started, me finding myself
and my own self. Carol Journeycreated mom Caroasis. Yeah. I can
only imagine as you said, likeyou were working full time, you had
kids already, and then you werecoming on with a fourth and then everybody's
calling you like, hey, Ineed your help, I need to do
(02:35):
this, I need that. Likethat's a lot on one person. It
is, it is. And here'sthe thing, my story is not unique
to me. If you actually haveconversations with moms, working moms, even
stay at home moms, they'll saythe same thing. Yeah, and at
some point we have to kind ofinterrupt the crazy cycle, if you will,
And that's what we hope to do. Yeah, talk about the mommy
(02:57):
needs a minute, because I knowthey do. We do. So it
is called Mommy needs a Minute. It is an emotional self care kit.
So typically when you think of likeboxes for moms' lotion and candle and all
of that, nothing's wrong with it. However, you can have a smell
a house that smells good and thenyou're like still stressed out there, right,
(03:19):
So it doesn't deal with strategies orstress management, and that's what we
do best. So It includes fourdifferent items. The first is and I
did bring a box to But thefirst is a mommy needs a minute doorhannger.
So we want to help women createhealthy boundaries, right, so that
not only for yourself, but thenyou're modeling it for your daughters and for
(03:40):
your sons. So you put onthat doorhanger. We teach you how to
introduce it to your family on theback, cook a meal, do their
favorite dish, and say hey, when you see this on the door,
I'm unavailable. So you put thedoorhanger up. Then we have and oasis.
How to create your own oasis inyour home. It doesn't matter if
you have a big house a smallapartment. We give you tips on how
(04:00):
to do that. The third productend the kit is what we call what's
on your busy plate. So inthe kit, it's a tear off notepad,
so you put everything that is stressingyou out. So there are ten
plates, literal plates where you canjust empty out everything on your mind.
Then we have five strategies. Sonot only do we provide you strategies,
(04:21):
but we provide you space to usethe strategies to your situation and then write
it outright. So once you're donedoing that, tear it off, put
it in your purse, and remindyourself of what you said you wanted to
do. And then the fourth thing, what I absolutely love is called girl
you did that? It is itis a celebration stand. So typically moms
(04:44):
do so much that a lot ofpeople don't see and they don't celebrate themselves.
So it is. It comes witha really cute pen and there is
a sticky note and you write outeverything you have done well, post it
and now when you walk past, you can remind yourself of how awesome you
are without always looking for someone tovalidate you. So this entire emotional self
(05:06):
care really supports a mom to say, wait a minute, I can have
space to think, excuse me,I need my time. Right. We
don't just have to wait to Mother'sDay, ladies, you know, to
come back around each year, butyou can create and prioritize your time every
day of the year. So that'sa little bit about the kid. And
then we have a big community thatwe can kind of plug you in and
(05:28):
sometimes when women are working, youknow, through the kid, we've created
just a connection to coaches, andthat's part of our ecosystem. So if
you get stuck you feel overwhelmed, yeah, you don't have to stay there,
Like we have life coaches that areavailable to help support you. And
that is amazing that you said that, because it's too many times where we'll
get like wrapped up in our headand I can only imagine, you know,
(05:49):
being a mother of multiple and you'rejust like, I feel like I
don't have anybody to talk to.I don't know what to do, Like
I just have to deal with it. But you don't. You don't.
Oh my gosh, you do not. And I think the more that we
get this message out, there's somuch support. Like I have a network
of other mom companies institutions and we'reall kind of like on the outskirts,
(06:12):
but we want to bring all theseresources together to help moms and let them
know, no, work with theprofessional. It's not as expensive as you
think. They don't have to berelated to you, but they really help
reflect back your heart and create thissafe space for you to be more than
what you even think imaginable. Andtalking about the safe spaces for a little
(06:34):
bit, so the work life balancefor entrepreneur period is crazy. And then
adding on being a mom to thathow have you been able to manage that?
And then you know, pour intomom care oasis to help others.
Yeah, so there are two thingsthat are very important to me about the
work life balance. So we actuallywe have a workshop that we do we
(06:55):
and it's called work life harmony. So I'll even attack the word, so
to speak, because balance puts youin mind that everything has to be equal
right this scale. I think that'sa false narrative. I think harmony creates
more of this rhythm of Some weeks, work might need more of my attention.
Some weeks, my family and thingsat home might require more of my
(07:15):
attention. So the goal is togo after work life harmony. I like
that freeze you up to say it'sokay. Next week is a new week.
So with that in mind, thereare two things that I focus on.
One is self compassion. The otheris self care. With self compassion,
you can't be more gracious to othersthan you are to yourself. And
so it really starts with the wordsyou say. So I'm very I give
(07:39):
myself so much grace. I'm verykind to myself. I don't allow mammy
guilt, which is a huge thingto overwhelm the way that I move,
like, oh, you can't beat this meat or this thing with the
kid. You're a horrible mom.Wait a minute, No I'm not,
because I show up with this kidx y Z exactly, and I really
(08:00):
walk in self compassion. And thesecond part is self care. So at
mom Care Oasis, we really focuson seven areas of self care and it's
this unique model to mom So itincludes things like your spiritual self care,
your physical self care. Physical dealswith are you resting, are you sleeping?
(08:20):
Sleep and rest are different, yourwater intake, your nutrition. We
go into emotional self care, howis your heart? Have you spoken your
truth lately? Or have you beenstuff in that in we go into beautiful
self care that that typically is whatwomen usually think about my nails, my
hair, how I look. Butthat's only one area. And then there's
(08:41):
organizational self care, which deals withlike are you managing the doctor's appointments,
how's the laundry, how is allthe other things going? And then the
final two areas is mental self care. Have you been challenging yourself? Do
you need to go back to school? Do you need to read more to
excite you know yourself? And thensocial are you spending time with your friends?
(09:03):
When was the last time you wenton a date night? Do you
do one on one time with yourkids? So for me, the way
I'm able to have better harmony isthat we have this tool a mom care,
where re rate ourselves from one tofive. Just go really quickly.
That's the one that's two I workedout, so I'll give myself a five.
Oh, I have an attitude atmy best friend, so that's a
two or you know, whatever itis. And then the numbers that are
(09:26):
low that's what I focus on.So instead of spending so much energy where
I'm already doing well, I canreally speak to the heart of where I'm
struggling and that helps me rebound replenisha lot quicker my energy than if I
didn't have that tool. That makesa lot of sense, Yeah, because
it does. It does like ifyou don't have to focus on too many
(09:50):
things at once, why why doit? Exactly? And that was gonna
stress you out further. That's thatwas the thought. Really with mom care,
we're really about easy strategies, practicalthings because we're already doing a lot
so much. Yes, so let'stalk about the amount of things that you
have to do as a mom andan entrepreneur. So I know you have
(10:11):
to have a team behind you, right, yes, So how did you
go about finding like that team thatshares your vision and you know, just
helps you push along what you guysstand for it? Basically absolutely? So
our team is phenomenal. We area team of five and they all are
moms themselves, but you know,we're open even if you're not a mom,
(10:33):
as long as you have a heartto serve. And so the way
we found out about them, aswe began to travel and talk and social
media, they just kind of organicallycame apart. And I think what has
been such a great opportunity is thatthey're all so different, right, different
skill set and they're different ages, different stages of motherhood. I want to
(10:56):
highlight that because we I may haveyou know, my kids are seven all
the way to thirteen, but I'mnot thinking about the really really small ones
or I can't even think about highschool in college. But having women like
that a part of our team,I think makes us more diverse and we
can speak to different aspects of thecommunity. Yeah, okay, perfect.
(11:18):
And if someone was thinking of maybetrying to get into this space or making
something like this to help other moms, Like, what were some of the
first steps you did, like asfar as actually making a company. Yeah,
So the first thing I would sayis if you you can't fake passion,
let me say that. Say thatagain, you cannot fake passion.
(11:41):
So if you feel passionate about motherhoodto me, I would say number one,
that's a gift from God, andso follow that that is already your
approval that you belong. Yeah,so that's one. So after that,
I would say the things you don'tknow regarding business, join some type of
cohort. In my journey, we'veofficially launched in twenty twenty one, I
(12:05):
was always in someone's cohort group. So that's the fearless fun visa has bridge
rebellions I was in. I couldname like five or six other ones where
it helped give me the business acumen. It helped put me around other women
who shared. So join something, don't be an island. I'm a part
of Score, which is a freementorship group, and it is so great.
(12:31):
My mentor again has helped like pushme along the way. There are
so many free opportunities for especially blackbusinesses. Let me say that that has
have really helped me with finances, money and opportunities. So I would say
if you're starting off, number one, know that you belong and number to
join some type of mentorship or cohorttraining group to just learn what you don't
(12:56):
know. Yes, there are resourcesout there, my gosh, yeah,
so many that are just not beingyou know, used to their full potential.
And you know it's mostly because peopledon't know yep. And then it's
like, but did you try tofind out that part part? Yes,
I am a huge researcher and it'sjust my skill set. But even in
(13:18):
my personal life, things I don'tknow. I just Google, look,
ass, tag talk, word ofmouth, and so many things have come
my way just because I've done thatalone exactly. And keep telling me a
little bit more about the new thingyou were just telling me about before we
started the Mommy needs a minicet. This is definitely you know what I talked
(13:39):
about a little bit before. Withthat, and then is are there more?
We have so much new Oh thereally new thing. Okay, thank
you the news the new thing okay, Yes, we are very excited because
we believe in self care, webelieve in moms. But more importantly,

(14:50):
us on social media, go toour website and put your name in to
this free listen five hundred dollars.A woman will win it by the end
of the month. So let thatwoman be you, exactly. And now
let me ask you my favorite question. Yes, brilliantly black. What does
that mean to you? Yes?So for me, I love that brilliantly
black. Number one it means thatdoing things with excellence. I am a
(15:16):
person who does things with excellence. And when I think of brilliance, it
doesn't matter what you're doing, ifyou're a mom, if you're a business
owner, if you just go towork, but be brilliant about it,
like it doesn't take other people towatch you, like you have this internal
desire to be brilliant, to shine. Yes, and you're doing it while
being black. Right, my racedoes not dictate right where I can go,
(15:39):
how high I can climb, allof that. But when I shine
and they see that I'm a blackwoman, listen, I turn heads exactly.
Yeah, I love that. That'sone of my favorite answers to that
question. I think, Yeah,it's just shining, as you said,
like, no matter what you aredoing, just showing up, shining through
(16:00):
whatever is going on, no matterwho's around, like you, just knowing
who you are out standing in it. Absolutely love it. So last question
for you, what would you sayyou love the most about mom care Oasis.
You know what? I love thatI get to be myself. So
yes, I'm the business owner.I'm often the brand face, but it's
(16:25):
the strategies that I provide while alsobeing real. So I didn't create something
that I'm not using. I literallyuse my doorhanger to create time for myself
to really think. Yeah, andI love that. I love that,
Like our products aren't people who aren'tconnected to the struggle of motherhood. No,
(16:45):
they're real coaches. So they're givingyou real strategies and we're real moms.
And I think that what motivates meto keep going is knowing that what
I'm doing is a solution to amom who is struggling. And even when
I'm fatigue, you're tired, orlike, oh, another meeting, it's
like wait a minute, but mypush is connected to her breakthrough and that
(17:07):
that moves my hands and my feetevery day of the week. You're being
in inspiration to so many people,So I hope you do know that.
