And you are the owner and operator of Obsidian or
a med Spot. Let's get into it. Let's get into
you your business. Just tell us about yourself.

Speaker 2 (00:20):
About me, well, i have been a nurse for fifteen years.

Speaker 4 (00:24):
I have been a nurse practitioner for five I'm officially
a business owner for the last almost five years of
Upsidian or a met Spot.

Speaker 2 (00:32):
I do have two beautiful.

Speaker 4 (00:33):
Children preteen and teen, so they, you know, wrecking my
brian a little bit. But yeah, so owner and operator,
I've been full time. I'm entrepreneur for the last two years.
I believe so operating fully at Obsidian or a med
Spa where we offer all things health and wellness. So
we focus on anti aging, really helping people feel good

from within. So we do ivy hydration, We do vitamin
injectables to help replenish those vitas is that they have
been lacking. I do do medical weight loss with the
FDA approved GLP one medications.

Speaker 2 (01:06):
What else we have.

Speaker 4 (01:07):
I have an esthetition who specializes in skincare, so we
do a lot of advanced skincare. We do botox and fillers,
and yes, I love mine.

Speaker 3 (01:16):
Look, you wouldn't even know right now, we don't know.

Speaker 2 (01:19):
Yeah, So I mean all things health and wellness.

Speaker 4 (01:22):
If there's something that you feel like your body needs
to feel better, if I don't do it already, it's
likely coming.

Speaker 2 (01:27):
So I really love what I do.

Speaker 3 (01:28):
So you do it all. Because I went to your website,
I'm like, let me book some real quick. I'm like,
where do all start? Because you got everything?

Speaker 1 (01:34):
Yes, And I mean people are so intentional nowadays about health.
So how important is it to you to provide those
services for our community?

Speaker 2 (01:44):
Very very important.

Speaker 4 (01:45):
So one of the things, you know, a lot of
the services that I offer, typically insurance would not cover.
And because you know, and I don't want to worffle
no feathers with this, I'm like, but they don't typically
pour into a preventative care. So a lot of what
I do is preventative care, you know, checking blood working
things like that, and a lot of the people who
are obeste who need the GOP ones, their insurance isn't
approving it because they're not diabetes, but OBCD leads to diabetes.

(02:09):
So you know, a lot of what I do is
preventative health care. Of course, as a black woman, my
focus is a black community, but I service everybody because
we all.

Speaker 2 (02:18):
Need, you know, to take better care of ourselves.

Speaker 1 (02:20):
Absolutely, and I love that and we thank you for
that doing the work in the community. You do serve
the Chicago land area, but you're located in Tinley Park, right, Yes,
perfect love the South suburb. So I was looking at
it and it's a beautiful space. It looks calm and
comforting and just professional and all the things.

Speaker 3 (02:37):
So everybody make sure you check it out.

Speaker 1 (02:39):
But when was the moment that you knew that you
wanted to be an entrepreneur?

Speaker 4 (02:43):
Probably the first job I had when I realized I
had authority problems.

Speaker 3 (02:47):
M Okay, look, don't tell me what to do.

Speaker 2 (02:50):
Don't tell me what to do. I think we should
do it like this. So but I've always had that
entrepreneurial spirit. Spirit.

Speaker 4 (02:56):
I wanted to be in the medical field since I
was young, wanted to own a private practice. But honestly,
after looking into like all the things, the restrictions with
the insurances.

Speaker 2 (03:05):
I was like, maybe that's not the route to go.

Speaker 4 (03:07):
And then in my journey to you know, preserve my youth,
I came across the esthetic world and so that was
what kind of prompted me to delve into them.

Speaker 2 (03:16):
And it's really been a journey since then.

Speaker 4 (03:17):
I actually, I think what solidified it my kids, father
and I A few years back, I think twenty nineteen,
we actually started a nonprofit youth football and cheer program
and our focus was mentorship, so kind of running that
was really what gave me the like, Okay, I think
you can do this, and so it's been on from there.

I love that.

Speaker 1 (03:33):
Now, did you have any entrepreneurs in your life or
influences in the fast You're the first.

Speaker 2 (03:38):
I'm the first.

Speaker 1 (03:39):
Congratulations, Thank you. I love that so much. So, I mean,
how did your business come to life?

Speaker 4 (03:47):
I rolled over one day and said, let's do it. Literally,
but that's kind of you know, some people let fear
stop them. Some people just go, and I'm one of
those who I just go. You know, I had this
bright idea and I'm like full speed of head, so
just kind of doing my research into what it would require.
I think I was finishing up my masters to become
a nurse practitioner when I first got into it, but

(04:09):
then just knowing what else I could do was I
continue to like further my education and like the how
I could really tailor the care the way I saw
fit to my clients. That's really what is and just
you know, full speed ahead, and that has now led
to I also do business culture, so I teach other
nurses how to open up their own medical spot as well.

Speaker 1 (04:25):
I love that because I was gonna ask you, like,
how else do you give back to the community. So
that's good, you know, keeping the dollar because you know,
there's enough money to go around.

Speaker 2 (04:34):
A whole podcast, But that's a whole nother story.

Speaker 3 (04:37):
Listen.

Speaker 1 (04:37):
Yes, yes, because every time I've interviewed somebody, they're like,
you know, some people try to hold me back, they
don't give info. But most of the people that I've
interviewed and said no, it's important for them to pass
down that information.

Speaker 3 (04:48):
So it sounds like that that was where I started.

Speaker 4 (04:50):
I said, you know, I don't gay keep I actually
ended up hiring a mentor at one point to kind
of close some gaps for me, which she let me
know I was on the right track, and she started
fussed at me. She was like, you better start charging
for this information you pay for I'm like, so there's
you know, that's why I do like the whole business.
I'm like, but if you call me and ask me
a question, there's no what am I hurting if I

(05:11):
give you the information to kind of, you know, push
you along.

Speaker 3 (05:14):
So right.

Speaker 4 (05:15):
I always tell people, I think we're standing on the
next Black Wall Street. You just have to get together. Ooh,
we just have to What do you think that'll take.
I mean, I know you said no gatekeeping, but what
do we need to do. I'm trying to figure it out,
but I'm sorry. And I hosted an event a couple
of months ago where I kind of mentioned it in
this you know, the black entrepreneurs all in one room,
and I think that a lot of times we just
have to get out of our heads, stop acting like

(05:35):
crabs in a barrel, and really, you know, figure out
how we can push this ahead because we were sitting
on it. It's too many black entrepreneurs out.

Speaker 1 (05:43):
Here, so many, so many, and all the other communities
do it hold it down their own they supporting, Oh,
they don't shop with anybody else, or get services from
anybody else.

Speaker 3 (05:53):
But we give our dollar to everybody else.

Speaker 2 (05:55):
Give it to everybody else.

Speaker 3 (05:56):
Yep, it's important to keep it in our community.

Speaker 1 (05:58):
So to do with that, I mean, you know, you've
been running the mad Spot for four years, correct, what
obstacles have you run into? So there might be an
entrepreneur or somebody who wants to be a business owner.
Listening is not easy at all. So what's a couple
of obstacles that you may have run into?

Speaker 4 (06:15):
The gatekeeping m there were people who were, you know,
doing what I was doing and maybe a step ahead,
and I may have asked questions and so you kind of,
you know, got to jump through hoops a little bit
to get some information. That's probably the biggest thing is
just really doing your research. I always say I dove
in head first, but that's kind of how I get started.
But you know, I would definitely suggest that people do
their research or acquire a mentor in the beginning versus

(06:39):
halfway through to kind of, you know, eliminate some of
those expensive mistakes that we make. So have definitely made
some expensive mistakes, but it's been an experience, so I
don't regret anything.

Speaker 2 (06:49):
I absolutely love what I've done.

Speaker 4 (06:51):
It's grown so much, and you know, and I still
have moments where it's like, Okay, maybe we're gonna you know, pull.

Speaker 2 (06:57):
Back, and people like do what, Well, I'm gonna get
my you know.

Speaker 4 (06:59):
So it's like people need me, and so that's I
feel like the nursing me really appreciates that. So it
keeps me going. But I mean it's highs and lows
probably until the end, honestly.

Speaker 3 (07:08):
Really wow. So what do you love most about your business?

Speaker 4 (07:12):
Probably the after the aftertake. So, like you know, when
my clients the benefits they receive at the end. I
think the most rewarding is when my clients come to me,
especially my weight loss clients, and say, not only do
I look better, but I feel better. I feel more confident,
I have more energy, I'm more motivated, and that is
really what drives me, Like you know, like the nursing me,

(07:34):
I'm like, I need you to be taken care of,
and so you know, I don't want to push pills
or anything like that. So being able to do this
from a different standpoint, and like you said, the space,
I was really intentional about the space for people to
come in and feel relaxed.

Speaker 2 (07:45):
So it is a whole vibe when you come in.
You know, people they only want to go home.

Speaker 1 (07:49):
So I'm like, come on, you can say, I can
tell you have a great personality, and you know that's
important to feel comfortable when you're getting all of these services.
So weight loss Journey, you said that's one of your favorites.
What else is something that's your favorite to maybe perform,
Like what's your favorite service?

Speaker 2 (08:06):
The botox?

Speaker 1 (08:07):
The botox let's get into that because there are a
lot of people obviously who do it, but then there
are some who want to do it and question it.
So for those people that have questions, what are the
benefits of both.

Speaker 4 (08:23):
TX of botox. So when we talk about anti aging,
and we talk you our skin. As we grow, we
the laxity you know, comes in and so we lose
the collagen and when you raise your eyebrows.

Speaker 2 (08:35):
You have those creases. So then something especially if you.

Speaker 4 (08:37):
Mad a lot, you know, so if you relax your face,
you develop these creases in your forehead that don't go away. Well,
the botox helps relax those muscles, so you can still
move your forehead, but you don't have those creases, and
then you don't have the creases that develop afterwards. So
those static lines is what we call them, and I
do them to myself. I would sit in the mirror
and poke in my face and get that botox. I

(08:58):
love it just it just makes us feel youthful without
or look youthful without feeling like we're doing too much.
So you know, you're rarely feeling like you're overfilled or
anything like that. So the botox is definitely one of
my favorites.

Speaker 1 (09:11):
Yeah, so I saw you on Instagram saying the differences
between botox and fillers, So what are those differences.

Speaker 4 (09:18):
So again, so the botox is a neurotoxin that we
inject into your muscle to help relax the muscle. Biller
is we're filling in the space that has hollowed from aging,
so you can overfiel and then people have, you know,
huge lips that may not you know, fit proportionally in
their face and things like that.

Speaker 2 (09:35):
So there's a difference. I do both.

Speaker 4 (09:37):
I love botox though, but sometimes it's really good, like
you have like a smile lines that you know could
have formed over the years, or you know, sometimes when
our skin gets lacked, if we've lost a lot of weight.
Then filling in those hollow spaces kind of rejuvenate you
and make you feel a little younger.

Speaker 3 (09:51):
Okay, I like that.

Speaker 1 (09:53):

Look, that's real nice because I yeah, you don't really
hear about free consultation. So that's appreciated because I mean
a lot of people do want to get these services,
and you know, they got so many.

Speaker 4 (10:28):
Question trusts before you you know, before you get people
to spend money with you, so and I you know,
like to talk to them and make them feel comfortable
and confident that they're in good hands.

Speaker 1 (10:37):
So yeah, So you're obviously about community, like why is
that important to you, you know, being in the black
community and doing these services, So what is or should
I say, what is something that you want to leave
for your community?

Speaker 3 (10:50):
What impact do you want to make.

Speaker 4 (10:52):
We have to take care of ourselves, and you know,
I feel like there are a lot of people where
we're dying earlier, having all these both issues and sometimes
yes we're predisposed to it, but you can, you know,
reduce that risk by just taking care of yourself, exercising,
eating healthy, making sure your vitamins you know, levels are where.

Speaker 2 (11:11):
They're supposed to be, just all types of things. Drinking water.
You know, we don't.

Speaker 4 (11:14):
I'm guilty too, we don't drink enough water, but you
know we do ibyhydration things like that. So it's just
really taking care of ourselves. And honestly, it really helps
with the mental health, which I'm even more passionate about.
When you're taking care of yourself, when you feel good,
you really can deal with life a lot easier. So
you know, taking that time to yourself, taking a walk
and just kind of you know, letting it all go.
Just you know, yeah, I mean, we have so many

(11:36):
resources like your spa, you know, these days, so I
won't say there's no excuse, but I'll just say that
we do have a lot of resources. Absolutely that we
can take advantage of like Upsidian or MEDS five.

Speaker 1 (11:48):
Of course, so this is brilliantly black. You are one
of our award recipients. Congratulations to you again, and just
what does it mean to you to be brilliantly black.

Speaker 4 (11:59):
Briguantly black. I love the way it sounds. It is
for me bigger than the.

Accolades and the degrees.

It is about our resilience and just our continued efforts
to push forward in life to be the best that
we can be, to not conform to what I feel
like we've been conditioned to think small and so to
not conform to that, to just think bigger and be bigger.
