Speaker 1 (00:00):
In the Branko was trying to convince Tony Man, it's
(00:01):
that Coke zero is a sports performance beverage.
Speaker 2 (00:07):
That was literally my uh my bit.
Speaker 1 (00:11):
I mean, coke zero has got the zero calories, no sugar,
no carbs, caffeine, lights, lights.
Speaker 2 (00:18):
It's basically a sports performance beverage.
Speaker 3 (00:21):
It kind of says more about the sports performance beverages.
Speaker 1 (00:24):
I think, well, yeah, I mean, you know, look, it's
it's carbonated, it's you know, it's got some other.
Speaker 2 (00:30):
Things that it probably uh probably aren't great, but.
Speaker 1 (00:34):
You know, it's just it's funny to kind of pull
it because then people are like, wait a minute, you know,
and they start thinking about what's in their pre workout
mix or whatever, and I'm like, yeah, that, which it.
Speaker 2 (00:44):
Goes back to what you were saying.
Speaker 1 (00:45):
They were talking about with the state of pre workout
mixes or whatnot, which I never really did.
Speaker 2 (00:50):
I did.
Speaker 1 (00:50):
I did one time when I was in a rack.
The last time one of my butt we had a
group of four or five has worked out together, and
one of my buddies he did he bought this like
pre workout mix or whatever.
Speaker 2 (01:04):
I can't even remember what it was called.
Speaker 1 (01:06):
It was blue lemonade or something flavor and it tasted delicious,
you know, and uh so I drank that before I
worked out and for the first time, and then I
went and worked out, and I was.
Speaker 2 (01:15):
Like, what was in that? Did you give me meth?
Speaker 1 (01:20):
Because I mean, I swear in my life, I have
never been as jacked up and ready to go as
as I mean, like I'm slinging around the forty let's say.
Speaker 2 (01:28):
You know, let's curl these way more.
Speaker 1 (01:30):
Than I should be even attempting, and uh yeah, I
just remember that and I was like, I'm never doing
this again. You know, after I didn't sleep for four
days after that.
Speaker 3 (01:40):
You know, maybe it was math, maybe that was that
was my second my second that is Heisenberg brand pre
workout fuel or whatever.
Speaker 1 (01:49):
No, I was, uh, it was, yeah, it got me
jacked up, and so anyway, I was like, I'm not
doing this again. So, but there are people that do
that stuff. They take that stuff, you know, religiously before
they work out. Me at nowadays, I just you know,
drink water, you know, a little protein or something like
that and then go work out. But there are people
that do the pre workout stuff or whatever. And You're
right that probably is a sad state for sad state
(02:11):
affairst that we had a winner for the uh the
fifty dollars gift card for three to zero three day.
Speaker 2 (02:16):
Who is the.
Speaker 1 (02:17):
Winners act, Sarah Sarah.
Speaker 2 (02:20):
Congratulations of Sarah, no last name, but no, okay, she.
Speaker 1 (02:25):
Wished to remain anonymous like a lot of winner like
she didn't want the people coming after a fifty bucks
gift card.
Speaker 3 (02:31):
I know we can't break anonymity stuff, so I'll say
Sarah Sarah, all right, that's good enough.
Speaker 1 (02:37):
Congratulations to Sarah for for being the winner on that
somebody that's uh loser. Recently, the Nuggets losing on the
Celtics one ten oh three, dropped to fourteen and sixteen
against teams above five hundred.
Speaker 2 (02:51):
The Nuggets are cleaning up.
Speaker 1 (02:52):
Beating the teams they should beat, but they are struggling
against top ten year competition.
Speaker 2 (02:59):
Jesus laid applause out of that for the Nuggets. Lucy,
I bet I bumped. That's bad. I've had a sad
horn and the other one. Oh it's uh yeah, that's great.
I mean, are you worried about the Nuggets at all?
Speaker 1 (03:13):
Because I mean, as you watch this team, you know,
across the year, we've talked about a lack of depth
and certainly a lack of Bigs depth when it comes
to that.
Speaker 2 (03:21):
But is there is there a worry or a concern.
Speaker 1 (03:26):
Amongst s Nuggets fans because you know, I feel like that,
you know, preseason, I think a lot of people felt
like retooling this thing. This was you know, they were
gonna be gonna be a contender. And I'm not saying
that they're not a contender at this point, but I'm
not sure that they're the favorite out of the West.
Speaker 3 (03:43):
They're like, overall, they're probably fourth place right now, I
mean in the West, second, But overall, I think the
Cats are above them. I think the Celtics are above them.
I think the thunder are above them. And you know,
Joker just turned thirty. I think that uh woke every
up to as good as he isn't as well as
his game should age. Who knows how long you're going
(04:04):
to have this transcendent player left.
Speaker 2 (04:06):
Well, that's that's where I'm going with that.
Speaker 1 (04:08):
Next is you know, and if that's the case, if
if they're not you know, if they're a good team
but not a contender this year, have they squandered the
window of Nikola Jokic. If this team comes away winning
only one NBA championship in the window of arguably the
(04:28):
best player in basketball since Lebron in is prime, I
mean that has to be considered a monumental failure, right absolutely,
I think, especially.
Speaker 3 (04:45):
On the front office and GM's just very poor job
building the team around Yokic.
Speaker 2 (04:50):
I think is still the only like number one on
a team to do.
Speaker 3 (04:55):
So without all star Beside it, the only All Star
on the team was DeAndre Jordan, and that's big asterisk
on that one. It's amazing what he's accomplished as is,
but being a small market like Denver, it's the reason
they didn't win a title up until that Nikola Jokics run.
It's going to be hard for them to recreate this
unless they hit another grand Slam in the draft, and
(05:17):
who knows when that's going to come along again. I
don't think this is the end all be all season, though,
just because Jokic's game should age so well. I think
you worry about him hanging it up and going back
to Serbia maybe early, but his game should age well.
Speaker 2 (05:34):
It's time for them.
Speaker 3 (05:35):
To make a big move like Kevin Durant maybe coming available.
I don't think you want to back up the brinks
truck for that with how much he has left in
the tank. But you've got to do something to try
and push the chips in and win another title while
you have this transcendent player.
Speaker 2 (05:51):
Yeah, you really do.
Speaker 1 (05:52):
And you know, the Lakers, I think when they traded
for Dancic, I think a lot of people are like, well,
I mean, they got a great player. We see the future,
but he's this now move. They've won six straight. Lakers
have won six straight, their second in the West. In
terms of the playoffs, they took the two seed from
the Nugget, right, That's what I'm getting at. The Nuggets
are the three seed at this point. You know, the
(06:12):
Lakers have won sixth straight. They're eight and two in
their last ten, and you know, they're despite having a
relatively tight point differential on the season one twelve point
eight four to one to eleven point one against one
point seven differential, they're still they're winning basketball games.
Speaker 2 (06:33):
At this point.
Speaker 1 (06:34):
The Nuggets are five point one positive differential.
Speaker 2 (06:38):
You know, Memphis at plus six and a half.
Speaker 1 (06:40):
But fourth in the West is sort of interesting. And
then of course, Oklahoma stated running away with everything.
Speaker 2 (06:44):
They play great defense.
Speaker 1 (06:45):
They're only allowing one to six point six a game,
they're scoring one nineteen point four a game.
Speaker 2 (06:48):
They have a twelve point eight differential.
Speaker 1 (06:51):
You know, okay, see is really I don't want to
stay they're running away with it, but they kind of
are in the West.
Speaker 2 (06:58):
They're still there's still time.
Speaker 1 (07:00):
A little bit of time for a Denver in La
or or in Memphis to catch them. I think Houston
still theoretically in that in that little little conversation, But
the Golden States, the Clippers, the Wolves, the Kings, the MAVs,
they're for all intentsive purpose, they can't they can't get
number one.
Speaker 2 (07:17):
Those they may still flirt with.
Speaker 1 (07:19):
The playoffs, but they can't get they can't catch o
Glahbma City at this point. And you know the other
teams that are out of it, Phoenix, Portland, San Antonio,
and New Orleans dutually they're out of it. I mean,
it's you know, playing for the lottery at this point.
It's fascinating to me because, like I said, the Lakers
with that one point some point differential, you know, Golden State's.
Speaker 2 (07:36):
Got a better differential than them.
Speaker 1 (07:38):
They're right in that Sacramento Dallas uh sort of differential,
but they're you know, they're find ways to win, and
like I said, we're red.
Speaker 2 (07:47):
Hot right now. Win win six straight.
Speaker 3 (07:49):
I think the other impressive thing with the Lakers is
they have one of the best records in the NBA
against teams over five hundred. They're in like twenty and
ten or something in that park. The Nuggets are fourteen
and sixteen. On the other hand, Yeah, and that's a
big thing. Like I said, the Nuggets are.
Speaker 1 (08:08):
They're putting away the teams that they're supposed to put away,
but they're struggling with the better teams. And I don't know,
I can't quite put my finger on at this point,
but you know, you kind of wonder if that's if
that's something that a seven game series might make better
for them, or if it's something that is exacerbated by that.
(08:32):
The Nuggets the best shooting team in the league at
tops and field goal percentage third and three point percentage third,
point score third and rebounds. There they're a very offensive
oriented team, which is interesting because Mike Malone's.
Speaker 2 (08:43):
Famously more of a defensive style of coach.
Speaker 1 (08:47):
But they They've just not been particularly great on defense
this year for whatever reason. Part of that may have
something to do with the relative lack of depth specifically inside,
you know. Part of that maybe a guy like Christian Brawn,
who's a lot more you know, as an energy guy.
Speaker 2 (09:05):
It's fine. I just don't like him as a defender.
I think he gets I think he gets picked on
a little bit.
Speaker 3 (09:10):
I also think it was different when he was playing,
you know, ten fifteen minutes a night and you were
asking him to, you know, defend the opponent's best player
off the bench of the opponent sixth man.
Speaker 2 (09:20):
And now you're asking him to defend.
Speaker 3 (09:22):
Their starting two guards for forty minutes to night, thirty
minutes a night.
Speaker 1 (09:26):
Yeah, he's getting thirty three plus minutes a night and
defending starting shooting guards.
Speaker 2 (09:30):
You know.
Speaker 1 (09:30):
I mean it's a little bit different when you're, yeah,
coming off the bench and you know, and being an
energy guy versus, hey, we want you to lock down
Anthony Edwards.
Speaker 2 (09:38):
You know, I mean, like, come on, And we kind.
Speaker 3 (09:41):
Of saw they also had KCPG, but we saw how
that went with a better defensive backcourt last year in
the playoffs.
Speaker 1 (09:49):
Yeah, I think some of the other components of this
that have been a bit of a problem.
Speaker 2 (09:55):
Jamal Murray's been just just inconsistent.
Speaker 1 (09:58):
You know, he'll put on some great night and then
he'll have some others that are just duds, and you're wondering,
you know, why he can't just kind of put it
together consistently. Michael Porter Junior a little bit of the same.
Speaker 2 (10:09):
You know.
Speaker 1 (10:10):
The good news for Porter has been that he's been
able to rebound when he's having bad nights.
Speaker 2 (10:15):
But you know, the Murray thing has been kind of concerning.
Speaker 1 (10:19):
I thought Russell Westbrook honestly was a revelation as a
point guard for this team.
Speaker 3 (10:25):
I think he was too, but I also feel like
he's turned back into a bit of a pumpkin.
Speaker 2 (10:30):
You know, there was that kind of honeymoon.
Speaker 3 (10:32):
It was really ugly to start, and I feel like
there were a couple three months of a honeymoon phase
there where it was like, Wow, this Russ experiment is
really working out.
Speaker 2 (10:40):
And these past couple three games after.
Speaker 3 (10:42):
The All Star break, it looks kind of like the
version of Russell Westbrook you might have feared you were
getting a little bit tired.
Speaker 2 (10:48):
I mean, he's played fifty four games this year.
Speaker 1 (10:51):
You know, thus far, it's the same number of games
that Murray's played, one short of what Yokichen played.
Speaker 2 (11:02):
And you know, he's getting twenty seven minutes.
Speaker 3 (11:07):
And he's going, you know, ninety miles an hour every
single minute he's on the court. The curse of Westbrook's
career has been he tires himself out before the playoffs
and then he doesn't really have anything left in the
tank and the Thunder get knocked out.
Speaker 2 (11:20):
In the first round. Yeah, he really, I mean, to
be honest, he hasn't like this many minutes.
Speaker 1 (11:27):
He hasn't played this many minutes per game, on this
many games in a season for a few years. And
so that's that's sort of the other, you know part
of this. He'd been on a declining minutes you know
kick since honestly, since he was with the Wizards. I
don't even know if anybody remembers that, but he's been
sort of on a declining minutes thing since then. And
(11:48):
then you know, they ran only jumped up this year,
and so I don't know, I mean, it's you know,
he's shooting better from the field than he's shot in years.
Speaker 2 (11:57):
He was never exactly a prolific three point.
Speaker 1 (12:00):
Everybody's shooting better from free than he shot in years,
But the rebounds are you know, are kind of down,
and you know, the turnovers are up a little bit,
and you know, I think that the age is sort
of showing. I wonder to me if you you, you know,
maybe scale back a little bit of what he does
before you kind of ramp him up for the playoffs,
(12:21):
if you can find a way to sort of do that,
you know at this point, although you know, scaling that bag.
Speaker 2 (12:27):
May take him out of a rhythm.
Speaker 1 (12:29):
You know, as as you worry about, as you worry
about these kind of things.
Speaker 3 (12:35):
I think you also have to worry about to your point, Yeah,
what version of Jamal Murray are you going to get? Uh?
Because last year you pushed him too hard and the
nuggets were kind of eliminated because he didn't have anything
left in the tank for those final series. But we
also it's well documented at this point that he needs
a bit of a runway to play his way into
rhythm or into shape or whatever it is. He has
(12:56):
these really cold starts to his seasons or his returns
from injury, then kind.
Speaker 2 (13:00):
Of heats up.
Speaker 3 (13:03):
It makes it an interesting like Goldilocks predicament.
Speaker 2 (13:06):
I think for Mike alone and the.
Speaker 1 (13:07):
Nuggets, they're also gonna need somebody to come off that bench,
and they're gonna need somebody to be a spark off that,
whoever that may be. And you know, the main two
bench guys this year, Ben strawther and and Peyton Watson,
neither one of them have been particularly prolific in terms of.
Speaker 2 (13:21):
You know, being able to provide that spark.
Speaker 1 (13:26):
Peyton Watson's has a better overall field goal percentage, although
Strather's been marginally better from downtown.
Speaker 2 (13:33):
Both those guys are average eight nine points a game.
Speaker 1 (13:36):
You know, Watson contributes a little bit more on the
rebounding side of things. But neither one of them have
been an effective what you would call six man. Neither
one of them been an energy guy off the bench
that you could rely on, and neither one is really
giving you I mean, Strather's more of a.
Speaker 2 (13:53):
Two or three.
Speaker 1 (13:54):
You're not really you don't have anybody that's gonna allow
you to take NICOLEA. Jokic off the court for a
few minutes and give him breathers in games where he's
frankly going to need it.
Speaker 3 (14:05):
Absolutely, it's been the problem that's plagued them for years
and years and years now to the point where they're
still having to trot out DeAndre Jordan, who was supposed
to be a twelfth thirteenth man on the bench three
four seasons ago. They it's been Boogey Cousins before that.
The z Ignagy thing has really really hurt them as
they look to you know, there's that whole Calvin Booth
(14:27):
interview about wanting to build a dynasty. I think that
Zegnagy contract is one of the biggest obstacles for them
now as they pursue that.
Speaker 2 (14:34):
Yeah, I mean that's I mean, that's part of the thing.
Speaker 1 (14:37):
I mean DeAndre Jordan, you know, I mean he's he's
pushing what thirty seven years old.
Speaker 2 (14:45):
It's gotta be up there.
Speaker 3 (14:46):
I mean, he was playing alongside Blake Griffin, and Blake
Griffin's been out of lead for a couple of seasons
now doing stand up comedy. Like it's yeah, I just
it's crazy how much they've had to rely on players
like Jordan or but He Cousins over the seasons because
ever since Yusuf Nurkic, they haven't had a comp.
Speaker 2 (15:07):
I guess Mason Plumley.
Speaker 3 (15:08):
Ever since Mason Plumbley left, they haven't had a competent
counterpart to Jokisch.
Speaker 2 (15:12):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (15:12):
He DeAndre Jordan will turn thirty seven in July. He
was thirty six years old.
Speaker 3 (15:20):
Yeah, you can't bank on everyone at the age like
Lebron either. I feel like the last again, two three years,
I've been saying, well, this has to be the last
year of DeAndre Jordan in that role. And then I
mean even this year, they went out and they signed
Sarrich I think in an effort to remove DeAndre Jordan
from that role, and Sarrich has been unplayable.
Speaker 1 (15:38):
Yeah, I mean, you're you're talking. I mean when DeAndre
Jordan came, he was playing with Katino Mobley. That's that's
how long he's been at the league. You know, at
this point he was playing with Tim Thomas and Brian
skipped Marcus Camby.
Speaker 2 (15:50):
He played with Marcus Camby. That's how long DeAndre Jordan's
been in the league.
Speaker 3 (15:54):
I remember coming home from school, taking the bus home
from school like middle schooll and watching DeAndre Jordan's crazy
Clippers dunks.
Speaker 2 (16:04):
On the top of Flex Sports centers.
Speaker 3 (16:05):
Tom Tenless when I was twelve and I'm doing this job.
Speaker 1 (16:09):
Yeah, but I mean he's and DeAndre Jordan was was
a pretty good player at his prime, but I mean
we're years removed from that at this point. The last
time he averaged double digits in the season was twenty eighteen,
twenty nineteen.
Speaker 2 (16:18):
With the Knicks. Like he is so so far removed
from being being that.
Speaker 1 (16:25):
I mean, he's a he's a three point a game guy,
gives you, you know, ten minutes when he gets in.
Speaker 2 (16:32):
That that's who that's who he is at this point,
you would hope.
Speaker 1 (16:34):
But I mean he's also old and a liability on defense,
and you're already a team that struggles on defense.
Speaker 2 (16:39):
And it's just it just I don't know.
Speaker 1 (16:40):
As I look more and more at this Snuggets team,
I've become more and more concerned that they're throwing away
the prime of Nikola Jokicchi Brunck's Country Night backup for this.
Speaker 2 (16:53):
All right here with you next Seaker's back there behind
the glass five six.
Speaker 1 (16:56):
Six times six line as releases to Sarah for one
of the give earlier. Appreciate all the text you guys
to send them, Brian, I see you out there. Stacy
from Utah I had a head a Bauger earlier as well.
With that, let's get the NFL six pack.
Speaker 2 (17:11):
It's time for the NFL six pat.
Speaker 4 (17:14):
I'm gonna take a lot of insight and insight information
you can't find anywhere else. I know, the top six
NFL headline.
Speaker 3 (17:26):
Starting out here with the legendary NFL head coach, multiple
times Super Bowl champion, and a national champion in Miami
as well. Jimmy Johnson announced today he will be retiring
from Fox Sports on The Herd with Colin Cowhard and
this is what we had to say about it.
Speaker 5 (17:46):
Probably the most fun I've ever had in my career,
and that's down Super Bowls and National Championships was at
Fox Sports. You know, I have an absolute ball with
my friends on the set and uh best friends I've
ever had there with Fox. And and then I'll tell
(18:07):
you on top of that, you know, I love working
for Eric Shanks, our CEO, and our producer Bill Richards.
But I've made an extremely difficult decision. I've been thinking
about it for the last four or five years, and
I've decided to retire from Fox.
Speaker 3 (18:24):
And what do you think about Johnson's decision and who
do you hope to see replace him.
Speaker 1 (18:31):
I don't think anybody can replace Jimmy Johnson, but they'll
put somebody in there. I need to go younger and
try to reboot that. That crew has been aging for
a while. And as much as there's a nostalgia by
keeping those guys, I think most there needs to be
some turnover there.
Speaker 2 (18:46):
Jimmy Johnson's had an interesting life. High school classmate of
Janis Joplin.
Speaker 1 (18:51):
He was, you know, he played with Jerry Jones obviously
at Arkansas where he was you know, he was a player.
He went on to coach at Losing a Tech from Man.
In fact, he was the guy who recruited Terry Bradshaw
to Lousian Attack. You know, yeah, the Bradshaw and him
later reunited of course at the Fox on the Fox,
all that kind of stuff. Yeah, at the time, and
it's funny a lot of people, I think a lot
(19:11):
of people now know, but Phil Robertson was the starting
quarterback for Lousiana Attack at the time. For those who
don't know who that is, that's Phil from Duck Dynasty.
Speaker 4 (19:18):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (19:19):
He was the starting quarterback at the Louisan Attack. Terry
Bradshaw was his backup. Initially that is raw small world.
Speaker 3 (19:25):
I had no idea about any of that though, So
it was It's funny because Jimmy has had some schisms
over the years.
Speaker 1 (19:32):
When Frank Broyles retired, he felt like he should have
gotten the job at Arkansas that ultimately went to Lou Holtz.
Speaker 2 (19:40):
And you know that it was kind of one of those things.
Speaker 1 (19:42):
That he was a little salty about, especially because at
his interview, Holts had already been told he was getting
the job, but Jimmy was the interview in any way,
it was a courtesy interview and he found out later,
So he was kind of salty about that, distanced himself
a little bit, you know, And ultimately and Uh went
and got the Miami job and then went went you know,
(20:02):
later on went had a head to head with Arkansas.
He'd actually beat him, but fifty one, like fifty one
to seven, I think it was. So he was the
worst home loss Arkansas had for for many many years.
Speaker 2 (20:12):
At the time, it was the worst in there in
the school history. So I and then of course he
had the famous schism with with Jerry Jones.
Speaker 1 (20:19):
You know, Jerry hired him once UH to become the
second Cowboys coach in history after Tom Landry.
Speaker 2 (20:23):
He came on there and turned turned the Cowboys around.
I mean, he turned them around, but had the schism
with Jerry. You know, a lot of people blame that
on Jerry, but it was both of them.
Speaker 1 (20:32):
You know. Jimmy had publicly said that, you know, he
would throw his hat in the ring to be the
head coach of the expansion Jacksonville Jaguars while he was
the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys, I mean it,
you know. And so Jerry took that his disloyalty and
there was some you know, there was a schism. And
then after they won the Super Bowl, Jerry famously said, hey, look,
anybody could have coached his team to a Super Bowl.
I'll prove it to He hired Barry Switcher the next year,
who did it? And then the Cowboys have been terrible
(20:52):
ever since. There you go, he got he's playing me
off with like the Oscars music. No, my thumbs slipped.
That was terrible.
Speaker 2 (20:58):
I've done anyway. Two Sorry again, don to reach out.
What a career though.
Speaker 3 (21:06):
T Higgins was franchise tied for the second consecutive season today,
but Adam Schefter says it's still very possible he'll be
traded by the Bengals.
Speaker 2 (21:15):
When you know a little of a tag and trade deal,
who do.
Speaker 3 (21:19):
You think Higgins plays for in twenty twenty five and
how do you think this situation is ultimately resolved in
the sense that what team's going to be the one
that signed Higgins to a long term deal?
Speaker 2 (21:30):
Is this is last year in Cincinnati. Where do we
go from here?
Speaker 1 (21:33):
Well, okay, first of all, I'll say this, I do
not expect him to play on the Tag, all right.
I expect him to either get an extension worked out
with him.
Speaker 2 (21:41):
Or to trade him.
Speaker 1 (21:42):
That said, if I had a lean, my lean would
be they get a deal done. My lean would be
they trade Trey Hendrickson and get a deal done, and
they just try to retool that defense.
Speaker 2 (21:53):
Right.
Speaker 1 (21:54):
If he does get traded, I think the leader in
the clubhouse has got to be New England. They've got
the assets, they've got the cash, they've got the cap space,
they're desperately in need of receivers.
Speaker 2 (22:07):
That just to me, that feels like that always felt
like that was the direction.
Speaker 1 (22:11):
There are a few other teams I suppose you could
look at, but to me, I would suggest that either
an extension with the Bengals or traded to the Patriots
were probably the options.
Speaker 3 (22:20):
A'd be so, but you think Trey Henderson could find
himself as an odd man out in that grade you
could extend.
Speaker 6 (22:26):
I mean, if you're going to continue to if you're
going to continue to build the office the way they're
doing it, then I guess what you do is if
you pay the offense right now, you try to rebuild
a whole defense, you know, one of.
Speaker 2 (22:38):
Those guys has to be the odd guy out.
Speaker 1 (22:39):
You just can't have that many big contracts, and so
at the end of the day, in order to be
able to afford everything, you're either going to have to
get rid of the amagur Hendrickson and I would suggest
that they could probably feel like they can get a
pass rusher out of this draft super cheap and have
cost controlled for the next four or five years.
Speaker 3 (22:53):
Hurree Adam Schefter is also now reporting that it's unlike Cleed,
the Minnesota Vikings will franchise tag Sam Darnald. This came
down about at the top of the hour here at eight.
Do you think it's the right decision to let Donald
walk instead?
Speaker 2 (23:10):
Of trying to tag and trade kind as we just.
Speaker 3 (23:11):
Discussed with Tea And who do you think Donald plays
for in twenty.
Speaker 2 (23:15):
Twenty five, Well, this is this is what i'd report.
Speaker 1 (23:18):
A couple of weeks ago, I had heard that the
Vikings were not going to be franchise tagging Sam Donald.
I would suggest that situation is fairly fluid in the
sense that they're trying to They were trying to figure
a few things out, but I don't think they're going
to I think there's an economic reality here. I think
Donald knows the market is personally. I think the Raiders
are going to wind up with Sam Darnald. That's that's
(23:40):
who they've moved on to after Matt Stafford. That's their target.
So I think that's the direction that that probably happens.
The Steelers, maybe they get involved there.
Speaker 2 (23:52):
But I suspect it'll be the Raiders. I think that
that's that's probably the direction that winds up.
Speaker 3 (23:57):
That could be a fun rivalry for the Broncos with
a I mean that matchup I think favors them well
with fans, Joseph being so great at creating pressure, and
Darnald's teen ghosts.
Speaker 1 (24:06):
Yeah, well, I mean, you know, it certainly beats getting
Matt Stafford over there. If the division starts to get dicey,
you get Stafford, Pete Carroll, Chip Kelly all together, they
trump up the run game by draft and Nash and Chanty.
Ye know, the Raiders they had a little plan there.
They could have made that thing, you know, real, real dangerous,
real fast. So yeah, I much much rather the Raiders
have Sam Darnold than them having Matt Stafford.
Speaker 3 (24:28):
To that point, which path do you think favors the
Broncos more in the long term? Obviously Matt Stafford and
all that would have made them better in the short term,
but they also would have had to make some solid
cap investments, maybe some pick investments back to the Rams
that could have cost them long term. What do you
think is the better ultimate outcome for the Broncos?
Speaker 1 (24:46):
Well, I think I mean, I think anything where you
get an aging quarterback and give up assets.
Speaker 2 (24:51):
I mean, short term, the Raiders be a lot better.
Long term. You've probably probably hurting them a little bit.
They've got some they gets some issues they gotta figure out.
Speaker 1 (24:57):
They're bringing Nate Hobbs back. He was arguably their best
defensive back. You know, Crosby, they got to get him
settled down and like body in and they've got to
figure out, you know, where they're gonna get weapons from,
because you've got rock powers and really not much else.
And so you know, they've got to figure out that
run game, I imagine will double dip at the running
back position this draft.
Speaker 2 (25:14):
You gotta figure out receivers.
Speaker 1 (25:15):
You got to figure out and then you got to
go back over there to the defensive side and overhaul
that thing because you really have like two players on
defense or any good I.
Speaker 3 (25:22):
Mean, and they both might be leaving this year. I
guess they got Crisby, but a couple of them might
be leaving this right.
Speaker 2 (25:26):
So that's that, you know, just help me keep your
eye on for.
Speaker 3 (25:32):
The NFL plans to change how they're looking at first
downs this upcoming season. They'll be using the Hawkeye system
that if any tennis fans, tennis fans will be familiar with,
you've seen the replays there on the balls going out
of bounds or inbounds or whatnot. They'll be using that
to gauge first downs going forward.
Speaker 2 (25:50):
The chain game will remain.
Speaker 3 (25:52):
Excuse me, the chain gang will remain on the field
as a backup.
Speaker 2 (25:56):
What do you think about this move?
Speaker 3 (25:57):
Do you think it'll pan out well for the NFL
or do you think it will ultimately cause more of
a headache than it fixes.
Speaker 2 (26:02):
Well.
Speaker 1 (26:03):
I think you've got to get the process down a
little bit. They've been sort of experimenting with it behind
the scenes without it being a thing for the last
couple of years to try to get there. You know,
they've got the Hawkeye Synchronized Multi Angle replay you know deal,
which when it doesn't combine live video feeds from from
broadcast partners and supposed to give you quick access to
multiple angles for you know, for accurate replay decisions.
Speaker 2 (26:26):
They also attract data.
Speaker 1 (26:28):
Points, you know, to support referee decision making process all
that kind of stuff.
Speaker 2 (26:32):
At the end of the day, I think this is
going to be a good thing.
Speaker 1 (26:35):
I just you've got to have processes in place to
make it quick, be able to explain it and go
from there. Last thing you can have, especially and I
keep saying this over and over, the last thing you
can have in an age where the bulk of your
new revenue is coming from broadcasting, keep people tuned in
and gambling, Keeping people tuned in for their money. The
(26:55):
last thing you can have is ambiguity, and so they've
got to they have to be clear concise on Equivgobal
and the technology showcase that and if they're able to
do that, then there will be a trust factor that
becomes ingrained.
Speaker 2 (27:05):
It'll be instantly accepted.
Speaker 3 (27:06):
Absolutely, there's I think there's going to be kinks in
the system eventually. It's a pretty big new thing, even
if they have been working on it for a while.
Speaker 2 (27:13):
But if the implementation.
Speaker 3 (27:16):
Is anything like what we've seen in tennis, I am
thrilled to see that. I think it works so smoothly,
so fast in tennis, and it's incredibly accurate in terms
of determining you know, ninety one hundred and fifty mile
prior tennis ball, you know, being a centimeter on or
off the white line. I feel optimistic it could hopefully
(27:36):
clear up a lot of the measuring in football.
Speaker 1 (27:38):
Yeah, me too, I'm cautiously optimistic about this. You just
you just have to get the trust factor right away
with it. You can't blow something with this system early
because you will instantly create questions.
Speaker 3 (27:47):
Yeah, you don't want the oh the rests are rigging
the hawkeye from homes very gradith yep five.
Speaker 2 (27:55):
All right.
Speaker 3 (27:55):
The NFL is looking to change their dynamic kickoff a
little more too.
Speaker 2 (27:59):
The pated change would move the touch.
Speaker 3 (28:01):
Back from the thirty to the thirty five yard line
to further incentivized returnable kicks and decentivized touchbacks, and would
quote unquote.
Speaker 2 (28:09):
Fix the on side kick.
Speaker 3 (28:11):
They're also looking to fix the on side kick as well,
after the league saw just six percent of on side
kicks kick attempts to be successful, the lowest rate in
any season since two thousand and one. How do you
think the NFL should fix the kickoff and the on
side kick?
Speaker 2 (28:26):
Yeah, I think he had to move it back a little.
Speaker 1 (28:28):
I don't think I think the on side kick portion
of the having to announce it was stupid. I think
you got to figure something out with that and and
give a you know, a surprise portion of it. But
I do think you have to move it back just
a little bit and and create an opportunity to put
that in the proper zone.
Speaker 2 (28:44):
I know the guy who created the dynamic kickoff, Sam.
Speaker 1 (28:47):
Swartzstein, you know, I know him very well. I know
that he had some tweaks for the NFL and in
year one that chose not to do them, and now
they're they're considering implementing them.
Speaker 2 (28:58):
So that I think there are are ways to make
that better.
Speaker 1 (29:02):
I thought it created a kickoff that's fairly stable and successful.
Speaker 2 (29:05):
What we did not see was.
Speaker 1 (29:07):
A lot of teams doing a lot of the things
that they talked about doing ahead of time. You know
the Steelers, for instance, putting fields back there to give
yourself a throwback and all kinds of stuff. There was
a lot of big time talk about that kickoff that
they just didn't really get to last year. I'd like
to see some special teams coordinators start to get.
Speaker 2 (29:24):
Creative with it this year. I think a lot of
it was scared coaching.
Speaker 3 (29:27):
I mean, you see you see coaches not want to,
you know, make themselves look I feel like a fool.
They don't want to have to answer about the kick
return touchdown in the press conference, and hey, we'll just
give them the five extra yards if it becomes out
to the thirty five and it's ten extra yards. I
think we should start holding at least the Broncos coaches accountable.
Speaker 2 (29:45):
This is cowardice.
Speaker 3 (29:46):
Dare them to return and coach your guys up well,
enough that they're able to stop or return out to
the thirty five consistently.
Speaker 2 (29:51):
Yeah, that's the thing.
Speaker 1 (29:53):
And like I said, I think you'll see smart defensive
or smart special teams coordinators start to smarten up a
little bit this year with giving themselves an edge on
rolling things out. I think people, I think part of
it is, yes, coaching scared. I think part of it
was not wanting to tip your hand on something or
keep something in your pocket for a moment that you need.
Speaker 2 (30:09):
But sometimes those moments don't.
Speaker 1 (30:10):
Show up, you know, or sometimes you overlook those moments
when you probably shouldn't.
Speaker 3 (30:14):
Six last one caloyer here, your hometown Kansas City chiek
God will be using the franchise tag on star guard
Trey Smith in an effort to keep their line intact.
The tag will cost twenty three million, a little over,
bringing their overall offensive line investment for the upcoming season
up to ninety five point three million. That's by far
(30:36):
the most in the league. The Panthers are really the
only other team in their ballpark that will be over
a third of their total cap space this year invested
on the offensive line. Only three NFL teams have more
than sixty seven million dollars invested in their offensive line.
Do you think Casey is over investing in the offensive
line considering other needs on the roster, or is this
(30:58):
the right move considering what the Super Bowl just showed us.
Speaker 1 (31:01):
I think the Super Bowl showed you if you're a
top ten team putting putting top ten money into your
offensive line, you're probably going to make the playoffs.
Speaker 2 (31:09):
You go back and you look at the teams from
last year.
Speaker 1 (31:10):
The Rams were number one, case He was number two,
Atlanta was number three. But they didn't you know, they
didn't quite get there. Carolina went in great, Houston was in.
Indy was close, didn't quite get in. Detroit was obviously,
and Philly was in. Denver was in and Cleveland had
a quarterback problem.
Speaker 2 (31:26):
So if you're a top ten team putting top ten.
Speaker 1 (31:28):
Money in the offensive line, you're probably a good football team.
I don't think you can underinvest there. I will say this,
I don't they get the franchise tag on him. I'm
told they're gonna get a deal done that's going to
be roughly what the tag is. This's gonna be roughly
twenty three million a year for him. Once everything gets
gets well and done. What this does is create a
situation where Kansas City's gonna have to make some cuts,
and that means Nick Bolton. So Nick Bolton's gonna hit
(31:50):
free agency. That gives the opportunity for the Denver Broncos,
who are interested in Nick Bolton, to be able to
make a play that.
Speaker 2 (31:55):
Benefits them a lot. Then I think that's very exciting.
Speaker 3 (31:58):
I also think that the Chiefs investing all this in
the line is kind of good for the Broncos.
Speaker 2 (32:03):
I agree it kind.
Speaker 3 (32:04):
Of raises the floor of the operation for the Chiefs,
but many we saw that this was a fairly limited
roster last year, and this isn't making it any better.
It's merely helping them tread water. They've also invested a
couple premium picks in that offensive line with Sue Mattia
and Jania Morris.
Speaker 2 (32:21):
Those aren't playing out well so far.
Speaker 3 (32:27):
It's just to the point where I think it's maybe
a bit of a house of cards. And I wonder
not that they're going to be seven and ten orny.
I think they'll make the playoffs just about every year
of Mahomes career, but I wonder if this is the
season where they're finally out of the AFC Championship Game,
if they've finally taken on too much water.
Speaker 1 (32:43):
I'm worried they're gonna take a step forward because they're
gonna get healthier at the receiver position. You get Rashi
Rice back, and he's a big, big piece of what
they do. That's one of those things I worry if
they could take, you know, a step forward in a
what is potentially an even uffer division. All Right, going tomorrow,
we get the.
Speaker 2 (33:00):
President's speech, the.
Speaker 1 (33:01):
Democratic rebuttal, but we'll have an hour Brookos Country tonight
before that and then react to that as well. Right
here on KOA, I Dont All by Zach Scues, I
condem
