Speaker 1 (00:00):
Zach Sever's back there producing five, six, six nine zeros,
text landed a few text messages come through.
Speaker 2 (00:06):
Somebody knew who bab Mac was. That. That's blowing my
mind right now. That's from the seven one nine we had.
Styx was one of the greatest American rock bands.
Speaker 1 (00:16):
They caught a bad rap because most of the critics
are cynical.
Speaker 2 (00:20):
He had another word after that, but I can't say that.
Speaker 3 (00:22):
On the air.
Speaker 2 (00:23):
Yeah, turn your mic on. Yeah, the boy band stuff
is always ridiculous. Broncos had dinner with JK.
Speaker 1 (00:33):
Dobbins, say, head him in today for the to do
like a little prime workout. The medical stuff left without
a deal, nothing eminent, but that doesn't mean that there
won't be something done. It doesn't take anything off the
table you mentioned during the last say. But we talked a
little bit about you know, they have an ingram situation
in Tip coming back again. I think the Broncos have
one of the person they want to talk to. But
(00:55):
I think JK. Dobbins is the leader in the clubhouse
to get signed here.
Speaker 4 (00:58):
I think it comes down to and I'm not gonna
doubt that, but come down to money. What does that
language look like? And from a contractual standpoint. When you
look at Dobbins, and yes, obviously you want to make
sure you kick the tires on him from a medical standpoint,
but even when you do that, no matter who you
are as a player, who you are as a team,
you don't have like fortune tellers skills to know when
(01:23):
it's gonna happen.
Speaker 3 (01:23):
So bringing in JK.
Speaker 4 (01:25):
Dobbins helps to Broncos in preparation, just in case.
Speaker 3 (01:29):
Guys get injured.
Speaker 4 (01:30):
You look at their schedule, it's still brutal, a lot
of tough teams you have to play against. And when
I look at Dobbins from the outside, just thirty thousand
foot view, well you say, okay, Well, you know this
is a business first, and the team's always going to
do what they feel is the best interest.
Speaker 3 (01:47):
For them financially.
Speaker 4 (01:49):
So maybe this is where both sides love everything about
one another, right, just to play them with bow knicks,
the defense, the more opportunities.
Speaker 3 (01:58):
Then it's like, okay, now get down to the nitty gritty.
Speaker 1 (02:01):
Here's what I'm wanting right right, here's what we're willing
to get you slide across the table back and forth,
right right, And here's.
Speaker 4 (02:10):
The thing now I talk to someone today at Broncos
practice another form of player about this.
Speaker 3 (02:15):
The longer you stay out.
Speaker 4 (02:16):
There on the market, the lower your price tag is
going to go down.
Speaker 3 (02:22):
So you have to make some tough decisions.
Speaker 4 (02:24):
What you thought that you will work at the beginning
of free agency, you may not be worth that now, yeah,
because every single day that goes.
Speaker 2 (02:33):
Your value goes down, not up for whatever reason.
Speaker 4 (02:35):
And you're being depreciated because one you are a player,
and two you play the position of running back and
we've seen that position be the value so frequently. So
if you are JK. Dobbins, you got to think about
how many more offers than you have out there? Are
we just talking about just kind of minuscule numbers. And
here's Ben, here's something I would never do as a player.
(02:58):
I will not have a contract that solely is is
based on incentive Because incentive latent contract means as.
Speaker 2 (03:06):
Though they're incentivized to cut you.
Speaker 4 (03:08):
That's right, and then you put more of the power
back in the team's hands.
Speaker 5 (03:11):
Right.
Speaker 4 (03:12):
So if we're gonna put incentives, incentives that I know
that I'm capable of reaching with the backfield like the
Broncos have when the weapons they're trying to build on
that offense, saying Okay, well if I get a thousand
rushing yards and a thousand all purpose yards, I mean,
is that realistically going to happen with how they're building
(03:34):
is offense?
Speaker 3 (03:34):
And I'm gonna say, no, it's not.
Speaker 4 (03:37):
So I think that's probably one of the things that
going that went into why Dobbins hasn't signed a deal.
Once again, I'm not saying that they can't get a
deal done because I always refer back to the Evan
Ingram situation.
Speaker 2 (03:49):
Yeah, and I again I'm of the opinion that I
would still say it's more likely than not.
Speaker 1 (03:55):
I'm not gonna say that it's happening or anything like that,
because you know howthing's changed, but I would say it's
more more likely than I would still say he's.
Speaker 2 (04:01):
Leader in the clubhouse.
Speaker 1 (04:02):
I do think they want to talk to one other
person and you know, go from there, and I you know,
good for them, they don't feel it out. You make
make sure it's right for for everybody. Everybody, make sure
it's right for everybody as far as that stuff goes.
I means, I mean, you know, Marason went on a
first day that's right. Get what I'm saying.
Speaker 2 (04:18):
Yeah, you gotta get to you gotta get some time
into each other. I don't know, although my dad proposed
my mom after a week, So.
Speaker 3 (04:23):
After a week yeah wow, So that's uh, yeah, I
don't know if I could do that.
Speaker 2 (04:28):
I can't. I'm never going to do that.
Speaker 4 (04:30):
We we know you can't do that because, uh, you
just seem like you are like when it comes to
love itself.
Speaker 3 (04:38):
Yeah, it just it just bounces off of you. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (04:41):
I don't believe you allergic to love. Yeah. Yes, Sharon
and I are on opposite ends of the absolutely.
Speaker 1 (04:49):
How can the Broncos develop past protecting running backs?
Speaker 2 (04:52):
That's one thing JK.
Speaker 1 (04:53):
Dobbins does well as as a veteran. You know, he
catches well, he wrotes, but he pass protects.
Speaker 2 (04:57):
Well. You've got some young guys in this room. U
not really built for it.
Speaker 6 (05:01):
RJ.
Speaker 1 (05:01):
Harvey built a little bit better for it, but it
hasn't done a lot of it.
Speaker 2 (05:05):
Aldrick estimates built for it, didn't really do a lot
of it last year. How can they develop pass protecting
running backs?
Speaker 4 (05:10):
Well, that's something that's an aspect of the game that
you have to constantly work on Obviously, first and foremost,
you have to drill it, drill it, drill it, show
it to players, and then coach the hell a lot
of it, because not every running back is built for it.
And when I say built for you think automatically from
body size standpoint.
Speaker 3 (05:28):
I've seen, yes, it is.
Speaker 4 (05:31):
I've seen large six two you know type of running
backs two thirty who can't do it well because you
have that's a certain amount of commitment and dedication. So
when you look at the Broncos running backs, I know
everyone talks about how.
Speaker 3 (05:46):
They're running backs. They don't have running backs.
Speaker 4 (05:48):
Over six feet and I'm like, you don't You don't
really need those type of guys, But are you very
efficient at what you are being asked to do? And
Javonte Williams is now with the Cowboys, he was probably
theroncos if not the best you know, blocking running back
that the Broncos have, So to teach it is one
way to do it. But also looking at the makeup
(06:09):
of guys saying okay, well of these guys who we
brought in, who has that physical mentality? And once again
this goes back to JK. Dobbins and probably why the
Broncos are saying, Okay, well, we want to identify him
and bring him in and try to keep the tires,
But you have to teach it.
Speaker 3 (06:26):
Can you do you see it? Like? It takes me
back to being around Bobby Turner.
Speaker 4 (06:31):
And for those who don't know, you should know in
Broncos country, Bobbie Turner, you know, long running back coach
with Mike Shanahan, and dare I say Shanahan's plural considered
one of the greatest running back coaches of all time,
right because he's still with Kyle right now. It's how
you teach it. What do you see from the offensive line?
Can you scan without giving it away? And then when
(06:52):
you when you identify that blessing player, can you stand
up with conviction and saying, you know what, I Am
going to be a striker? Then it's foot placement, hand placement,
and they're really driving and sticking to a guy and
driving him off the ball. Because you've heard the terror
before when referring to corners saying, oh, he's got sticky coverage. Right,
(07:12):
you have to look at a blissed linebacker and look
at it in that particular way.
Speaker 3 (07:16):
And the fact that the broncos.
Speaker 4 (07:20):
I mean running backs, if you want to say, are
vertically challenged. It gives them the ability to kind of
squat and lunch and fine off it.
Speaker 3 (07:28):
Hit that dude right on his shin.
Speaker 1 (07:29):
Yeah, I mean there is something to having size to
be able to hold up against a rushing edge guy
that's huge.
Speaker 2 (07:35):
But there's technique to it too.
Speaker 1 (07:37):
I mean there's you know, fill INSA's of the world
and the Julia mcloffins are going to lose to Joey
Bosa most of the time just because he's you know,
those those guys are that size and you're your size,
But there's techniques to it.
Speaker 2 (07:48):
We've seen guys that are diminutive.
Speaker 1 (07:50):
Darren Sproles played some excellent blocks back in the day
and nobody was gonna accuse him of being huge.
Speaker 3 (07:54):
No, he wasn't a massive man.
Speaker 4 (07:57):
But once again, it goes back to being able to
use your body.
Speaker 3 (08:01):
How do you how.
Speaker 2 (08:03):
Do you use that?
Speaker 3 (08:04):
Can you use hit better? Yet?
Speaker 4 (08:07):
Can you make your lower body presence and use that
to help you on the level of explosion? Like you know,
you made some jokes about R. G. Harvey Stett, right,
even though yeah, he may be shortened stature, but he
is still a why lower body, thick type god exactly.
(08:28):
And once again you get a blissed linebacker coming who's
looking to swim the running back and you get him
that Paiya put him on his back.
Speaker 3 (08:38):
Talk about buzzing the tower for real.
Speaker 2 (08:41):
That's uh, and that's something that I think they'll need
to do.
Speaker 1 (08:44):
That's part of the reason they want to add a veteran,
I think, is somebody who understands what it is that
they can teach the young bucks how to.
Speaker 2 (08:49):
Do those uh, those kinds of things. We talked a
lot about the offense, how the how do the DB's look.
Speaker 4 (08:53):
Well the dbs man obviously still a work in progress,
obviously still working on the aspect of communicating. But just
from a skill standpoint, I think this is this is
probably gonna be one of the better groups.
Speaker 3 (09:07):
I don't know what the nickname is.
Speaker 4 (09:09):
Gonna be, because I remember last year you came up
with a nickname for PS two and Roley Moss, so
you're gonna have to dig into crates and come up
with one for their defense. But the depth in that room,
I love is great. It's gonna be a competitive room,
and I know at practice the conversation.
Speaker 3 (09:26):
Is like, where is today Barron going to play? Who's
who has to sit down?
Speaker 4 (09:32):
And automatically everyone goes to well Jaquan McMillan. And I
was telling someone today if you think, even though Jakwan
is an expiring deal that somehow he's going to buy
into this whole notion that you know what, we drafted
the young kid, We're going to just move you to
the side.
Speaker 3 (09:49):
No, And I don't knowbody's.
Speaker 2 (09:51):
Like, you're going to be number two now, Okay, yeah,
nobody's like that.
Speaker 4 (09:54):
For me, it's going to be a fight for the
Broncos to make that move. But this is a fight
that you want. Nonetheless, this is the problem that you
want to have now. I mean, there's a couple of
guys that I'm concerned about. I'm concerned about Jyo Skinner,
I'm concerned about Demari Matthers.
Speaker 3 (10:12):
Where do those two guys fit in?
Speaker 4 (10:14):
Because at this stage, you really need to show that
you are playing on that next level for teams can
consider you. And you're thinking, you know what, hey, I
can make this team and I can survive playing on
special teams. But with the changing of the rules as
far as the kickoffs aren't concerned.
Speaker 3 (10:32):
It changed so much as far as what you can
do as as a player.
Speaker 4 (10:37):
So it's gonna be interesting to see how JL Skinner
adapts and how.
Speaker 3 (10:42):
He kind of takes this situation.
Speaker 4 (10:45):
Knowing as though you have Whufung who's here, and you
know Brandon Jones are projected to be the starters, and
you have a guy in PJ.
Speaker 3 (10:53):
Locke who had significant starting time last.
Speaker 7 (10:56):
Year probably is the third safety in the rotation, so
you're competing with that.
Speaker 3 (10:59):
Then don't forget you know.
Speaker 2 (11:00):
Devin Key Turniyel still here, Devin J. L.
Speaker 3 (11:04):
Skinner.
Speaker 2 (11:05):
You know you've got the got bodies.
Speaker 3 (11:07):
You got bodies, So it's like.
Speaker 4 (11:08):
Well, where does that time come in to make that
impression on the coaches?
Speaker 3 (11:14):
So it's gonna be interesting.
Speaker 4 (11:15):
That's the pattention to the dB room and see how
things shake out.
Speaker 2 (11:18):
That's not the only thing going on.
Speaker 1 (11:19):
We have some special teams too, our puntary Crushaw the
Aussie no see.
Speaker 6 (11:26):
Me is it?
Speaker 3 (11:28):
Is it crush aw on Krisshaw.
Speaker 2 (11:31):
I thought it was crossh off Crushhaw, So it's.
Speaker 7 (11:33):
Gonna be crush all like crush y'all. I'm changing the
crush sharing me Crushy'll crush yes, okay, I mean when
you watch him. Yeah, the one punt that got off
his foot. Funny you saw that one.
Speaker 2 (11:45):
There was a line drive like a ninja start on
the field and then everything else. It has that sound.
Speaker 4 (11:50):
It's got the l L L cooj if you don't
know what I mean by the booming system, right, it
has the booming system. But here's the one concern that
I have as a guy that played all special teams,
and what I'm i about to say is something you
want to do in life, but you don't want to
do too much as a punter, and that's I'll kick
(12:11):
your coverage, right.
Speaker 8 (12:13):
Uh.
Speaker 4 (12:14):
In life, every man, you're trying to marry up, so
I'll kick your coverage. But in football you definitely don't
want to do that. And I know everyone was oozing
on about you know, the hang time, and you definitely
want that. But the first thing I thought from playing
so many years is gunner, I'll kicking your coverage because
you want to give your coverage enough time to get
(12:34):
down there and be able to make you play for you.
You don't want to give the return team so much
time where the returner can receive the ball, they set
up the return and boom, they're at the gate.
Speaker 2 (12:43):
Yeah, and that was my concern.
Speaker 1 (12:45):
You're talking about guy who's putting a sea level and
now you're putting an altitude, and so the ball's gonna
go further and you've got to adjust to that by
adjusting your angle to give it more verticality.
Speaker 2 (12:54):
Word I just made up. And you know it were
you got, you got.
Speaker 1 (12:58):
You got to put that thing higher so you got
the gunners can get underneath it, because that would be
a problem.
Speaker 2 (13:04):
You would be outkicking your coverage. That would be a problem.
Speaker 4 (13:06):
Yeah. Once again, I mean I love the hangtime. I
love how the ball just kind of gets up and
just drops. But at the same time as like, you
don't want to OutKick your coverage. And he may have
a tendency to do that because he's got a strong
leg and the ball is gonna carry here.
Speaker 3 (13:25):
But he's gonna put more onus on those those guys outside.
Speaker 4 (13:29):
Man, they're gonna have to beat those double teams, those
singles and be able to get down a corral those
returners and force those guys into a lot of fair catches.
Speaker 1 (13:36):
Yeah, and that's that's it's gonna be interesting to see
how he does with that. I mean, we just see
the ball booming off his leg right now. We haven't
seen how he, you know, has reallocated or re angled
his punts in order to give a higher trajectory with
maybe maybe a shorter distance across the field. But it's
hanging up there to make sure you preserve the maximum
of yardage to the coverage team can get down there
and handle business as you will. Five six, six nine
(13:59):
zero is the text line. Let's see here we get
seven to us estimates, two hundred and forty pounds. She'd
be able to doct to taste out of a linebacker's mouth. Yeah,
but again, some of that's technique.
Speaker 8 (14:08):
You know.
Speaker 2 (14:10):
Somebody asked how Franklin was looking got our chemistry with him?
Speaker 1 (14:13):
And well he was never chemistry with him about it
was the problem. Uh, it's Franklin's got to learn to
catch him over his shoulder, you know. I mean he's
getting those guys with the number of flashback to the quarterback.
Speaker 2 (14:23):
He catches the ball, but when he's looking away, he can't.
You didn't catch over.
Speaker 4 (14:26):
Should look, man, that's a tough catch, and I don't
want to justify and make excuses for Troy Franklin. But
I still think he is a hell of a wide receiver.
And sometimes when you're young make things a little difficult.
But those over the show that catches, dude, Man, I
mean you could sit in the stadium and in your
living room with your feed up when you lazy boy
say oh, I would have made that.
Speaker 2 (14:46):
It's easy to say, yeah, I know you wouldn't. I
bet you. We did a pros versus shows and dudes
trying to catch it over their shoulder. They dropped ninety percent.
Speaker 3 (14:52):
You know what, that would be interesting and put your
money what your mouth. She said that you could do it.
Speaker 2 (14:58):
No way do it out there. You just got to
catch it over shoulder without breaking stride. You know kind
of thing.
Speaker 4 (15:03):
That's hard because once again, yes, you got to track
the ball.
Speaker 2 (15:07):
Yeah, you have to track the dB. To track the
ball part of it because you're reading that you're running.
Speaker 1 (15:12):
You know, if you got the dB with you, the
dbs like to hand checking and checking back and you're
reading him to read where the ball is. Man.
Speaker 4 (15:19):
Talking to some wide receivers and watching him myself, some
of the toughest catches for receivers to make.
Speaker 3 (15:24):
Are the ones when you just.
Speaker 9 (15:25):
Wide open you I'm slowing down, yes, and you're just
sitting there and that ball I swear to you, it
looks it's coming at you, and then all of a sudden,
it looks like a mack truck and You're like, you
can't see what I'm doing right now, but I look
like I'm in a field of Daisy's.
Speaker 2 (15:39):
Like you know, yes, it's it's it turns into a
water balloon.
Speaker 4 (15:44):
It's just it should be your specialty because you're a
wide receiver, but it's still one of the hardest catches
to making. This is why we see wide receivers make
the tough catches are usually the better catches because someone
is contesting that they are.
Speaker 2 (16:00):
Come back, Let's Talk Broncos.
Speaker 1 (16:01):
Joey Richards gonna make his uh BC t call in
guest debut right here in Broncos Country nine. Zach Seekers
back there behind the Glasgow right off the UK Wait
Commas from hotline though, and bring our guy from Let's
Talk Broncos.
Speaker 2 (16:18):
Joey Richards. Joey, how you doing, buddy.
Speaker 5 (16:21):
I'm doing great.
Speaker 2 (16:23):
Yeah, yeah, we're doing uh well. We basically brought brought
you on to uh, you know, to mess with young
Zach Segers.
Speaker 1 (16:27):
Back here, who's uh producing the show? You guys obviously
do the do the stuff together, and uh, we need
some dirt on Zach.
Speaker 2 (16:34):
He's too squeaky clean. We need some dirt on Zach.
Speaker 8 (16:38):
I think he's a little too obsessed with the Special
Teams That's my number one complaint with Zach.
Speaker 5 (16:42):
He's a he's a great, great, great podcaster, but man
is he annoying with the special teams talk. You should
have seen him. He signed the pap punter ben it
wass well.
Speaker 1 (16:51):
That's the date.
Speaker 2 (16:52):
Nick's bit over here raved about Jeremy Crosshaw too. Who
were we're now?
Speaker 1 (16:56):
We're when we say he scor renamed him crushyall Jeremy Crushalls.
Speaker 3 (16:59):
Yes, we're running off, but I'm surrounded by the special.
Speaker 2 (17:03):
Team stuff, and I'm like, look, guys, enough for the sides.
I need to get back to the meat and potatoes.
Speaker 9 (17:07):
Get me.
Speaker 2 (17:07):
Joey Richards on the phone, and Zach delivered. As we
look at this thing right now, we got JK.
Speaker 1 (17:13):
Dobbins coming into town and he left without a deal.
But I still think there's something on the table there
potentially to come back to what do you think somebody
like JK.
Speaker 2 (17:20):
Dobbins could add to this team?
Speaker 5 (17:22):
Yeah, I think he's a floor racer. You have a
really young running back group there. I'm obviously at rookie
and R J. Harvey Otter testime going into year.
Speaker 8 (17:30):
Two not saying much time in year one there.
Speaker 5 (17:34):
It's I mean I looked at it. I've been taking
it the whole lot of season. Guys, le Broncs need somebody.
Speaker 2 (17:39):
To protect your hopeful.
Speaker 5 (17:40):
Franchise quarterbacks there in bon Nix at the running back position.
Speaker 8 (17:44):
Did you trust any of these young guys and that
guy have it certain Nate down You know that big
pathplay that you need.
Speaker 5 (17:51):
To convert, the defensive thrown up lift at you? Who
is not protecting there? Between those two, I think Potter
got to May had some potential to.
Speaker 2 (18:00):
We haven't seen it yet, It's.
Speaker 5 (18:01):
Not proven, just a miss assignment away from you know,
you making that play and you not. I think j K.
Dobbins bring would bring that to the Broncos.
Speaker 4 (18:08):
De sisily before you came on, Ben and I were
talking about the wide receiver room, and I mean I
have called the sudden as wide receiver one and Marvin
Mims wide receiver two. But in Ben's eyes, I mean,
he's just going Google Gaga for Vala. And do you
(18:29):
think that bayle A can be that wide receiver two
or maybe even once for the Denver Broncos this season.
Speaker 8 (18:35):
I'm gonna throw you guys a curveball because I think
we get a little mixed up with positions sometimes and.
Speaker 5 (18:42):
As Ingram might as well be a wide receiver, and
I think he's wide receiver two on this team. I
think people forget two years.
Speaker 8 (18:48):
Ago on Jacksonville he had more targets than any Broncos
wide receiver.
Speaker 2 (18:53):
Had this or this past season.
Speaker 8 (18:55):
He is that you can't eat that many shriff and
on it's going to be from the slot position. He's
going to be playing wide receiver for the Broncos. I
think after that it is a toss.
Speaker 5 (19:06):
Between Valley and then I would give it two minch
just because he's.
Speaker 8 (19:11):
Going to get so much screen touches, manufactured touches along
with actual just regular wide receiver touches.
Speaker 5 (19:18):
But Valet could definitely steal that from them.
Speaker 3 (19:21):
No joy, now, ammon Ingram, Okay, I'm with you.
Speaker 4 (19:25):
You went to Vala, do you just the frog number fourteen,
and I don't hear you mentioned him at all. So
where does call a sudden fall in your description of
what this office could look like?
Speaker 5 (19:38):
Well, okay, I think it goes without saying. He is
the number one wide receiver. Okay, he is the alpha
wide receiver. He's playing the X for the Broncos this
next season. He's proven it every single season as the Bronco.
I don't doubt anything from him.
Speaker 8 (19:52):
He's going to be the number one guy on the seam.
Speaker 5 (19:54):
After that, I think it becomes a little debatable.
Speaker 3 (19:57):
Okay, Okay, I was I was about to what jump
off my chair man. I was about hair.
Speaker 2 (20:04):
Well, it's that's assuming Cortlands still here. Carl could he
could be gone entirely?
Speaker 3 (20:09):
I mean, are we still doing this?
Speaker 2 (20:11):
We're still doing this?
Speaker 4 (20:12):
I mean, come on, just say come on, Joe Tom
ben Off of that ledge of the idea of the
Broncos possibly trading Corlon Sudden before the start of season,
I don't like it.
Speaker 3 (20:23):
I don't care for what's that you.
Speaker 8 (20:26):
I think it would be a really good way to
hurt your quarterback going in the year two.
Speaker 5 (20:31):
When you're wanting to.
Speaker 8 (20:31):
Jump from him, you don't. You don't get rid of
the wide receiver he just found so much success with
as a rookie. I think you want to continue to
build that continuity there between.
Speaker 5 (20:41):
Him and Cortland Sutton.
Speaker 8 (20:42):
The other pieces come into place, less important but still important.
Speaker 5 (20:46):
Just you cannot get rid of sudden.
Speaker 2 (20:48):
You can't do it, Okay.
Speaker 1 (20:51):
I'm just saying, guys, keep your uh, keep your wits
about you all on this one.
Speaker 2 (20:56):
On the defensive side of the ball.
Speaker 1 (20:57):
You know, the Broncos had a pretty good defense last year,
but it looks like this this unit has the potential.
Speaker 2 (21:02):
To be special, like all time special.
Speaker 8 (21:05):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (21:05):
The addition of Hufaga, who looks like he's got a
football IQ that makes some Einstein and oh, by the way,
he plays like Paula Malu.
Speaker 2 (21:11):
On top of it.
Speaker 1 (21:12):
Uh, you've got green Law, who's who's coming back off injury.
Tweak to himself a little bit, but it figures to
be exciting here at the inside backer that you had.
And then Jade Barron. Yeah, I don't think he was
a lot a lot of Broncos fans radars because most
people assumed he was going to be drafted before he
got to the Broncos. But he's come in here and
from the moment that he first spoke with media, you
could tell some the guy who had it all put together.
(21:34):
What do you think the expectations are for this defense
this year?
Speaker 8 (21:38):
For the defense as a whole, they better be really good.
You had it too many pieces were really good defense
that was already really good.
Speaker 5 (21:46):
They better be really good.
Speaker 8 (21:47):
I'm talking about top five defens this year.
Speaker 5 (21:50):
I want them to be the best defense in the
AFC West. I think that should be the expectation.
Speaker 2 (21:54):
With the pieces they added.
Speaker 8 (21:56):
Jade Barron, like you mentioned, I think he names the
full position this year for the Broncos is competing for
more of a Trent McDuffie role, which would be and
maybe in base he's playing outside.
Speaker 5 (22:07):
At the moment you go into some.
Speaker 8 (22:08):
Package, he's playing the nickel. You bring Riley Moss on
the field, man, it should be a special group this year.
Speaker 5 (22:14):
I'm really looking forward to it.
Speaker 3 (22:16):
So I wanted to circle back to the running backs
for just a second because with R. J.
Speaker 4 (22:22):
Harvey being added to the team, obviously everyone is happy
about they're really excited about the possibility of.
Speaker 3 (22:27):
What he can bring. Well, when it comes to some
of the other guys who are currently on the roster.
Speaker 4 (22:32):
You think of Jimim McLoughlin and also Audi Guessim who
was a healthy scratch. I think in the Buffalo playoff game,
what do those two running backs fit in the grand
scheme of things you think for the season.
Speaker 5 (22:46):
I think it depends whether you add JK. Dobbins or not. Right,
if you add Dobbins, it makes Julian McLoughlin very expendable.
Speaker 8 (22:55):
To me, I would almost be shocked if he ended
up making the roster, right, I have a hard time
seeing that bring four running backs to the group, in
the fourth one being McLoughlin there because Harvey and him are.
Speaker 5 (23:06):
Similar, I think they're going to play the rookie though.
Speaker 8 (23:09):
In those McLoughlin doesn't bring any special team of value,
so it makes it.
Speaker 2 (23:14):
More concerning there.
Speaker 8 (23:15):
For McLaughlin, I think that is the one I have
circled and I'm curious about if there's even a role
for him on the team this next seven.
Speaker 1 (23:24):
Talking with Joey Richards from Let's Talk Broncos, as we
as we start to get closer and closer to training camp,
I think fan expectation based on last season is through
the roof. What is realistic expectation for this Denver Brucles
and can they can they take the division?
Speaker 2 (23:41):
Is this is this a twelve win football team?
Speaker 1 (23:43):
Is this uh BO Knicks uh you know, this giant
leap forward that we're gonna see? Or is there the
chance for some regression, a chance for this team to
uh to maybe have a similar same record while still
being a better team.
Speaker 5 (23:54):
I think expectation.
Speaker 8 (23:56):
I think there's always the possibility of a team regressive,
you know, I mean you guys remember the.
Speaker 5 (24:01):
Dream Team Eagles. They added all these players, but still regress.
Speaker 8 (24:04):
Right, That could happen to anybody in the NFL coaching
such a big fabar, How does the locker room jell together?
Speaker 5 (24:11):
All of these things are huge, but expectation should be hot.
I don't think expectations should be that they win the division.
I think you have to give that to the Chiefs
until they prove otherwise.
Speaker 8 (24:21):
He's done it too long now, but they I would
say second division should be expectation for them. Playoffs for sure.
Speaker 5 (24:30):
Expectations should be to win one playoff game this year.
I've also had.
Speaker 4 (24:33):
Today of practice or therefore, after practice, coach Payton was
talking about the offensive line and the importance of having
that unit actually grooved in because in his mind, he's
going to make everyone better across the team, but more
importantly the guys on the defensive side.
Speaker 2 (24:51):
Of the ball.
Speaker 4 (24:52):
When you evaluate the offensive line last year and then
now evaluate them this year, with bol going into his
second year, what are the expectations.
Speaker 2 (25:03):
For that group?
Speaker 6 (25:05):
Hi?
Speaker 5 (25:05):
I thought they were really good last year. I thought
the running back the running backs didn't do them any justice, right.
The Broncos run game wasn't very great, but the offensive
line as a whole was pretty solid.
Speaker 8 (25:16):
I think Luke Wattenberg is the one piece on that
line that I'm a little curious about to see. Hey,
do we see a jump there or is he the same?
Just he's cheap, so we're going to keep them. We
can't pay all five starting offensive line in there.
Speaker 5 (25:32):
That's when I have sortle I do think this is
a really good unit.
Speaker 6 (25:34):
Though.
Speaker 5 (25:35):
Mike McGlinchey, I mean, from.
Speaker 8 (25:37):
The year prior to last of this last season, made
a huge improvement in his name. I hoping that continue
offensive line should be really really sold this year.
Speaker 1 (25:47):
Well that's okay, so let me let's die a second
little further because you have some possible attrition after this
year on the offensive line. I mean, do you keep
mcglinchy and Ben Powers at those numbers? Are you looking
to find a way to get younger and little bit
less expensive there? And then you've met you you touched
on the center position Wattenberg has you know, he's kind
of been he's been there, he's been the guy, but
(26:08):
he's he the guy. You know, we saw this before
with Lloyd Kushionberr who steps it up and he's last
year got a big payday. Could Luke Wattenberg step his
game up this year? Or are we going to see
forsythe you know who it was? I don't know if
as a fan favorite, but it felt like it the
way he was talked about on Twitter.
Speaker 5 (26:23):
Yeah, no, you're right, he just feel like the fan favorite.
I think Wattenberg is going to get his second shot
at it this year and we'll see what happens. I mean,
we saw what he did last year and he didn't
lose the job.
Speaker 2 (26:33):
He was fine.
Speaker 5 (26:34):
So Luke Wattenberg I have sloted as a starter. I
do think he's expendable, though.
Speaker 8 (26:39):
If the Broncos this next season, in the draft, came
up to a center. It's like, we think this guy's
pretty good, they'll take him. I don't think he's a
player that you have to keep around. As far as
the other offensive lineman, the Broncos continue.
Speaker 5 (26:53):
This is a big critique I have of them.
Speaker 6 (26:54):
They continue to put themselves in a position where they
must pay the offensive line because they don't draft any
It's impossible to replace any of these guys or get
cheaper talent there when you don't draft any. The ruggets
continue and continuing, continue to go on without.
Speaker 5 (27:09):
Drafting a tackle in particular. So you're gonna you're gonna
have to keep these guys around.
Speaker 2 (27:15):
Well, that's yeah, And that's sort of the thing.
Speaker 1 (27:18):
It feels like that that's something that they're going to
have to do at some point, and uh, it has been.
I mean, Garrett Bowles was like the last time they
drafted a tackle, you know, And that's that's that's saying
something because he's getting towards you know, he's getting up
there in years as far as that goes, And uh,
you look at this, I mean, minors is certainly a
something you can build around there, right guard, But the
rest of this line. I mean, as good as it
(27:40):
is and as well paid as it is, I mean
it feels like there could be some flux after this year.
Speaker 5 (27:45):
Yeah, no, I totally agree. I totally agree. And that's
one thing Sean Payton has always done. You haven't seen
it from him being a head coach of the Broncos yet.
Speaker 8 (27:53):
But if you go back and look at his Saints
and they were always drafting offensive lineman, that.
Speaker 5 (27:57):
Was a big thing they always did.
Speaker 8 (27:59):
I'm really curious to see why he hasn't with the
Broncos yet.
Speaker 5 (28:03):
I guess it's just he hasn't felt like they needed it.
But it's one of those positions where I'm never going
to critique if they draft. You never know what's going
to happen at that position.
Speaker 8 (28:12):
A guy retires, you need somebody to replace, a guy
gets it hinjured, you need somebody replaces five guys and
they work as a unit.
Speaker 5 (28:17):
It's different than just saying, hey, i'd have a starting
or a number one wide receiver. I don't need one.
Now five players. You're always gonna need an offensive.
Speaker 2 (28:25):
Lineman that you you said, you said five guys. Now,
I'm hungry. I need some I need some burgers. And fries.
Speaker 1 (28:31):
You know, Joey, we we appreciate you taking some time
out tonight and look forward to hearing you on.
Speaker 2 (28:36):
Let's talk Broncos with that other guy I can't remember
his name.
Speaker 5 (28:39):
Yeah either, Well, thank you. I apreate you both.
Speaker 2 (28:45):
Don't worries take care of Joey Richards. So let's talk coast.
Speaker 6 (28:48):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (28:49):
Also on there are our own Zach seekers, which we
try to we try to have some fun with uh
uh with Zach and Renad again. But I think I
think you know, there is a point to what Joey
was saying there there at the enna's sake. The offensive
line is good, but Sean Payton has traditionally paid a
lot of attention to it in the draft.
Speaker 2 (29:03):
They a'n't really done that in the Sean Payton area yet.
Speaker 4 (29:06):
No, And that's a great thing about progressing as a coach.
A lot of things that you did in prior years
you change and try to mix up. But it's hard
for coaches to get outside to know them of what
they were taught as they were coming up in their
coaching ranks over their own philosophy. So things are being
done a little differently, and everything starts up front and
(29:28):
being able to control the line of scrimmage.
Speaker 3 (29:30):
So it's going to be interesting to see how well
the run game stays on track.
Speaker 4 (29:35):
But another element of that, and it's not really talked
about that much, is the ability to stick with the run.
Speaker 8 (29:44):
Right.
Speaker 4 (29:44):
I personally think that there were more opportunities for the
Broncos to stick with the run than they leaned on
last year. And you think that always it's on the
running Backs's on the running back. Did the running backs
have their issues a little, Yes, but I don't think
it was totally on them.
Speaker 1 (30:00):
Well yeah, I mean we saw instances where the coaching
staff got into the play calling, got away from that
in Waish. We really only saw one instance of them
sticking with the run last year. That was the ill
fated drive against Kansas City there in Arrowhead where they
were driving down for that final field goal that ultimately
was blocked.
Speaker 2 (30:17):
But the run game was on party. They stuck with
it and it was it was like novocaine. You gave
it time and it worked.
Speaker 3 (30:22):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (30:22):
And also don't forget that game against that Thursday night
game against the Saints.
Speaker 3 (30:27):
Yeah, and keeping things in perspective, the same.
Speaker 4 (30:29):
Rush, different defense wasn't great in that game, but the
Broncos took advantage of it, and if I'm not mistaken,
that was probably one of the better rushing tandem games
from Jafonte and bon Nicks.
Speaker 8 (30:41):
Right.
Speaker 3 (30:42):
Well, once again, the idea is you gotta stick with it.
Speaker 4 (30:45):
And sometimes the run and practice may break and you
may think, Okay, well we're gonna go in the game
and go to run. We're gonna get that same type
of production. You may not get it, but that doesn't
necessarily mean you bail on that run. This is where
for me always lean on, you know, people I've been
around in my own personal experience, but this is where
being around Mike Shanahan and being around Kyle Shanahan, they
(31:06):
know you're gonna have some of those negative plays, but
they're gonna stick with it because they know at some point.
Speaker 2 (31:11):
It's gonna speaking a pop and we're gonna pop out
for a break for ourselves. We come back. Parker Gabel
from the Denver Post gonna join us on brookas Country
