Speaker 1 (00:00):
Broncos Country tonight once again on this Friday. I'm your host,
Zach Seegers, fresh off my first day of Broncos training camp,
first day of Broncos practice this offseason, and I am
excited to share plenty of takes with all of you today.
But first let's talk about them Rockies. They win yet
(00:23):
again today, a pretty thrilling six' five victory over The Baltimore.
Orioles they are now tied with The Chicago White sox
of last, season the twenty twenty Four Chicago White sox
through however many games one hundred and, THREE i, believe
(00:43):
which you, know that's a nice step in the right.
Speaker 2 (00:47):
Direction you, know you're a few weeks ago it looked.
Speaker 1 (00:51):
Almost like a certainty that they were going to blow
by the twenty twenty Four White sox. Record now they're
on that same, pace and where The White sox were
getting ice cold at this point of last season and
really kind of bottoming out and only getting, worse The
rockies seem to be playing their best ball of the.
Year and you know is they're not in the playoff.
Out there's still a lot of growth necessary, here but
(01:14):
it's nice to see them playing some competitive ball.
Speaker 2 (01:16):
Again through the month Of.
Speaker 1 (01:18):
July they actually HAVE i think the twentieth best record in,
baseball which, again like that's not what you're striving, for
but twentieth best in a single season is a lot better,
than you, know worse since the eighteen ninety Nine Cleveland
spiders or. Whatever so it's nice to see them making
some positive movement. There sad to See ryan McMahon. GO
(01:43):
i think that's a double edged sword. THERE i will
say with this, win The rockies have their first five
of seven run of the season so, far so they're
about as hot as they've been all. Year, still, though
LIKE i, said kind of sad to See ryan McMahon,
go this fan base keeps losing its fan favorite. Players you,
(02:05):
Know Charlie blackman to, retirement but then you know The aeronaudo,
trade and you, know you go back even before, that
and you Have Ju leowitski And Matt holliday at a.
Cargo just seems like every Beloved rocky star eventually heads
for a larger, franchise AND i think that's, painful BUT
i do think most would agree this is what The
(02:27):
rockies had to. Do they are staring at a pretty
severe rebuild ahead of. Them you, know it goes without
saying it's one of the worst seasons IN mlb. History
serious changes have to be. Made And ryan McMahon is
on the back nine at this. Point you, know he's
even if The rockies have an amazing turnaround over these
next few, seasons he probably wouldn't be on the next
(02:48):
Competitive rockies. Team, meanwhile the two pitching, prospects one of,
them maybe even both of, them could be on that
next Competitive rockies. Team this is A rockies team that
really needs pitching right. Now they're, averaging they're allowing an
average batting average near three hundred on the. Year it's
it's worth of two ninety right, like that's it's. Untenable
(03:12):
SO i, think and you, know this isn't going to
be an immediate solve to, that but getting some fresh
arms in the, pipeline especially some that were thought pretty highly,
of IS i think a really wise move by The rockies.
Here you, know they've invested a fair bit of draft
capital over the last half, decade but a lot of
their draft picks in that department have not aged. Well
(03:36):
so you, know you hate to Lose ryan McMahon for,
it BUT i think adding these two, young promising arms
kind of resets some of those draft misses and hopefully
gets the future looking a little brighter here In colorado
for Those. Rockies at least they're playing better baseball. NOW
(03:58):
i hope they can keep this hot streak going when
the rest of the. WAY i Know ryan's hoping for
a really hot streak so he can get that over
on the win, total but DON'T i don't know if
he'll be quite so. Fortunate moving on to The, BRONCOS
a little bit of training camp talk for you guys
from the action out. There today was the first real
(04:19):
day of training. Camp you, know the first two days
were part of the acclamation, period WHICH i think is
a new thing this, season where you, know everything's kind
of a fifty sixty percent. Speed it's almost more of
an ota or an extra ota or an extra mini camp. Practice,
today though they were going at you, know there was
(04:40):
a walk walk through period at the, start but for
the most part they were going full. Speed you, know
it was a padless, practice so you only had like partial.
Contact but, overall you, know we had some good action
today AND i think you started to get a good
feel for the, team not only from a talent, perspective
but from a personality and energy. Perspective the energy on
(05:05):
the defense specifically really stood out. TODAY i mean constantly
throughout the, practice they were chirping at the, offense not
like any serious, thing not something like you would hear
during an ACTUAL nfl, game but you, know, playful friendly,
competition you, know but some trash talk back and forth
like you might have with your friends playing pool or.
(05:26):
Something and you, Know Malcolm roach And Jonathan cooper were
big parts of. That but it just kind of added
to the energy and it was a fun. Atmosphere AND
i don't think you've, seen you, know for all the
Critique Sean payton gets for being maybe a, gruffer more
authoritarian figure his, player it hasn't always been Like Bill
(05:49):
belichick where the players are kind of miserable or. DYSTOPIAN
i forever have the visual Of Jameis winston on crutches
dancing The New Orleans saints nightclub of a locker room
after a victory off a torn acl you, know THAT
i think better encapsulates the type of Environment peyton creates
(06:12):
for his. PLAYERS i think, he's you, know the type
of teacher we maybe had growing up that would be
very hard on, us but also would be, fun and
you kind of enjoyed and and you, know you enjoyed
the lighter moments with. Them he could be, Harsh he
can be harsh when he needs to, be but he
can also BE i, think lighter and more playful and
fun when he needs to. Be AND i think we saw,
(06:37):
that you, know, today with what he was allowing the
defense and the offense to. Do, again it was kind
of chirping back and forth all throughout. Practice and you,
Know i've been there for The Vic fangio, era The
Nathaniel hackett, era even a bit of The Vance joseph,
era AND i don't Think i've ever seen players during
(07:01):
training camp having as much fun AS i saw them having.
Today SO i think that's something you always really love to.
See the DEFENSE i might have been the ones chirping more,
though because they certainly won the. DAY i think they you,
KNOW i don't think you get concerned because this is training,
camp and especially this period of training. Camp Sean payton
(07:22):
talked about this during his press conference. Too contact is
so limited.
Speaker 2 (07:26):
Right, now.
Speaker 1 (07:29):
You, know and how do you block some of these
amazing athletes coming off the edge or rushing on the
interior when you're not really allowed to make full contact with.
Them and so this portion of training, CAMP i think
it's very hard to get a read, on you, know
the blocking going, on how the run game is.
Speaker 2 (07:50):
Doing for that same.
Speaker 1 (07:51):
Reason also because you can't really tackle the running, backs
and the running backs aren't just going to flop, over give,
up go, oh you got me time to go back
to the. Huddle they want to look, good so they're
charging down the field well after they've been you, know
fake tackled to try and show some power ability.
Speaker 2 (08:08):
Offense so it's hard to judge all.
Speaker 1 (08:09):
That but the pass rush, today all that, said the
pass rush today looked, ridiculous and even relative to you,
know other seasons during this period in, TIME i think
it stood out as especially. Dominant you, know maybe something
LIKE i saw in twenty twenty, Two but even, THEN
i THINK i think today really wowed because it wasn't
(08:31):
just the top. Guys it wasn't just that top line
really being impactful for.
Speaker 2 (08:36):
ANYTHING i thought the second.
Speaker 1 (08:37):
Line and the third line were even more dominant in
their performances and more suffocating at least as a pass.
Rush you, know you had the starting unit With Nick
benito And Jonathan.
Speaker 2 (08:52):
Cooper they played.
Speaker 1 (08:53):
Great Nick, BENITO i know hasn't gotten talked about as
much during this training camp. Period cooper had an outstanding,
day But benito also had a bunch of pressures also
was in on. You, again it's hard to judge these
sack things or. Not he might have had a sack On.
Bo bo might have gotten, away you, know a dealer's
choice on that. One but you, know starting unit had
a great. Day but, man when the second unit came
(09:15):
in With Jonah, ellis a rotating trio Of Jonah, Ellis Dedre,
tillman And Kew, robinson.
Speaker 2 (09:23):
That was something.
Speaker 1 (09:23):
ELSE i think you have to be tremendously excited as
A broncos fan coming away from that pass rush performance
because the future is up in the air For Zach
allen And Nick. BENITO i think it probably gets worked
out with both those, guys but you, know at the
very least one of. Them but you could never take
that for. Granted who knows what winds up happening. There
(09:44):
and to see these, young cheap. Options also as the
rest of The broncos have a young talented roster right,
now but all these pieces are going to start to
get more, expensive so starting to see the next wave
of young, talent you, know to kind of replace that
great twenty twenty one class That peyton had that's now
all going to start to get. Expensive seeing the next
(10:04):
wave come up is, huge AND i think you're seeing that.
Speaker 2 (10:08):
With Qugh robinson And Dendre. Tilman in.
Speaker 1 (10:10):
Particular Jonah ellis is still working his way back from.
INJURY i thought he had a good, day but, man
it felt like every Rep Qugh robinson And Andre tillman
were out, there it was.
Speaker 2 (10:21):
Havoc it was just sheer.
Speaker 1 (10:23):
HAVOC i think A Qugh, ROBINSON i love the pick
when it, happened and, MAN i JUST i can't get
over how good that.
Speaker 2 (10:31):
Pick, again we need to see it in a more substantial.
Speaker 1 (10:34):
Period but if he can replicate anything like what he's
showing in training camp in the, season even if he's
just like a designated pass, rusher that'd be so great
to have in the, arsenal you, know Keeping benito, fresh.
Speaker 2 (10:50):
Just also being a lighter.
Speaker 1 (10:51):
BODY i don't think you want to put a ton
of mileage on him to get the best version Of,
benito AND i Think Qugh robinson can enable that Stre
but even beyond, that even if it really tails, Off
Nick saban hyped this guy up as the best special
teams player he's ever, coached WHICH i think is you,
(11:12):
know coming From Nick saban is incredibly. Remarkable and you
have some SHARED dna there With Sean payton And belichick
both Being parcel's, disciples And saban coming off That belichick.
Speaker 2 (11:24):
Tree So i'm Sure peyton.
Speaker 1 (11:28):
And rizzi are going to be big fans of, him
at least in that, phase AND i can't the very
least having him is that that fifth edge rusher is
such a. LUXURY i think The broncos should just have
guys with their hair on fire coming off the edge
all season.
Speaker 2 (11:42):
Long FRESH i just.
Speaker 1 (11:46):
Know this year's past rush might be even better than last,
year's which is remarkable to, say considering they led the
league in sacks last. YEAR i just you, know and,
again let's wait till, Preseason let's wait till it's more.
Substantial but you, KNOW i can only opt rate off
of the data we had in front of us, today
and that was phenomenally. Impressive one of the best edge
(12:07):
or just pass rush showings in, General John, Franklin, myers
And Zach allen had great. Days one of the best
pass rush SHOWINGS i Think i've ever seen from A
broncos defensive line in a training, camp practice or defensive.
FRONT i think Green law And hufonga look like exactly
what The broncos. NEEDED i think last year there was
(12:31):
a little they were lacking a bit of speed at,
linebacker AND i think you really saw teams pick on
that down the, stretch just them not having a super
reliable coverage option in the middle and a lack of,
speed AND i think you saw teams really go at,
that Like Cody barton And Justin sternad down you, know
like the last three or four games of the season
(12:52):
allowed something like eighteen completions on twenty.
Speaker 2 (12:55):
Targets you, know the it was just an easy.
Speaker 1 (12:59):
Button offenses just kept going to and they, kept you,
know poking at that, scab poking at that wound because
The broncos showed no ability to defend. It AND i
think Green law And hufanga to a lesser.
Speaker 2 (13:13):
EXTENT.
Speaker 1 (13:13):
Pj locke was also getting picked on down the stretch last. Year,
now maybe that was probably largely something to do with
his back. Injury he was playing with a fractured, SPINE i,
believe or something along those, lines so you know that
probably played a role. There but those two elements were
really picked on frequently down the stretch for The broncos.
DEFENSE i think, that paired With Riley moss's, injury was
(13:36):
really why we saw was really an elite defense for
much of the season be more good to very good
down the, stretch and the additions of Green law And
hufona looked like it really shores up two of those.
Speaker 2 (13:49):
Problems, greenlaw it just can cover.
Speaker 1 (13:53):
So much range over the middle of the, field and
he just plays like a bat out of. Hell he's
just not someone you want to deal with offensively or
you want to try and he can pick up you,
know those those speedier running, backs those speedier tight ends
and hang with, them which is GONNA i expect remove,
that you, know easy answer for opposing.
Speaker 2 (14:13):
Offenses And ufanga can do much of the same.
Speaker 1 (14:15):
Stuff and both those guys are incredibly fierce, hitters which you,
know even with the modern, rules that's going to dissuade
offenses from attacking that soft middle of the. FIELD i
think most exciting though at that linebacker in safety position
is the afore MENTIONED.
Speaker 2 (14:35):
Pj locke And Alex.
Speaker 1 (14:36):
Singleton i've made it no secret On Broncost country tonight
or in my articles or anywhere else you might hear
My broncos musings That I'm i've been really concerned heading
into camp and heading into the season with the pretty
shallow linebacker in safety. Room you, KNOW i think you
feel really good about two of your safety options and
(14:59):
one of your line. Options you, KNOW i think you
feel good About singleton if he's healthy off THE, acl
but that is a question that needs to be. Answered Green,
law you at least saw last year really tearing it.
Up SO i think you feel good About Brandon jones
and Green law And, kufanga BUT i think you have
(15:22):
questions beyond those, Guys and considering the injury histories Of,
jones Of, hufonga Of singleton and Green, law there's a
good chance whoever the third man is in either of
those rooms is going to have to start games for.
You even beyond, that in base, defense you're going to
(15:43):
need either three linebackers or three safeties on the.
Speaker 2 (15:45):
Field one way to get around the.
Speaker 1 (15:47):
Linebacker problem is maybe Moving ufanga down into the, box
which is why you might need three. Safeties if he's
done in the, box who's going to replace him back?
Speaker 2 (15:56):
There so you're going to need to come up with.
Speaker 1 (15:58):
Some combination to get to, five and you can't really
do that if you only feel good about three. Options
SO i Think locke And singleton both looking healthy today
moving around. Well singleton's movement really jumped out to. Me
he had to play chasing Bo nicks out of the
pocket where you, know it's hard to tell at field,
level but he looked like he hadn't lost a. Step
(16:21):
and if you can get those two options all of a,
sudden you, know maybe the depth is still a bit
of a. Concern but now instead of having three options
you can feel secure in you have. Five AND i
don't think that's that far fetched an. Outcome you, know
The singleton's had a long time to recover from that,
Injury he's not missing any part of the. Offseason he's
immediately ready to. Go him bouncing back doesn't seem that far.
(16:43):
Fetched and ALTHOUGH i Think i've seen a lot of
pessimism in the fan base ABOUT. Pj locke's return from,
injury and it makes sense given the unprecedented.
Speaker 2 (16:53):
Nature but this isn't.
Speaker 1 (16:55):
Like IN acl injury circa two thousand and five or
A pateeller tendon injury, today where it's, like, man we've
seen a lot of these and no one's come back from.
Them we just haven't seen, many if ANY nfl players
even experienced this surgery. Before not that that's great, either
(17:17):
but it's not like it's been proven you can't come
back from this or it's extremely difficult to come back from.
Speaker 2 (17:23):
This it hasn't been proven either.
Speaker 1 (17:26):
Direction we're wandering into the unknown right, now and we
don't really know which way it's going to pan. Out
but it could pan out THAT. Pj lock's relatively fine
and is you, know eighty to ninety to maybe even
one hundred percent of the guy he was last, year
and that paired with you, know another step From Jail
skinner and then at, linebacker maybe At Drew sanders Or
(17:47):
adjustine they're not getting, involved could really you, know shore
up those rooms and and kind of alleviate that last
remaining weakness on The broncos.
Speaker 2 (17:57):
Defense AND i really think.
Speaker 1 (18:01):
This defense could be the very Best broncos, defense or
not better than twenty, fifteen but the best defense we've
seen since.
Speaker 2 (18:10):
THAT i, think even better than last.
Speaker 1 (18:11):
Year's and, MAN i just they do so much well
the past RUSH i already. MENTIONED i think they're maybe
shoring up those few weakness. Areas and then the, coverage
it was phenomenal all day. Long you, KNOW i Think
i'll get into the offense. Here in the next.
Speaker 2 (18:30):
Segment you Saw.
Speaker 1 (18:33):
Bow And stidham And schless what's his name Got i'm
spacing on the fourth stringer right, now all Scrambled, Ellinger Sam.
Ellinger you saw them all struggling to stay in the
pocket to find answers on. Time and you, know sometimes
(18:55):
that's struggling in. Camp but WHENEVER i would glance, downfield it's, like,
oh all those guys are locked. Up there's no real open,
option you, know forcing these guys to defer to the,
CHECKDOWN i think a little more than you'd ideally like to.
See BUT i didn't see a better option out. There you,
KNOW i was glad O nix when he was forced to,
scramble he kept his eyes, up he continued top eight
(19:16):
as a. Passer he didn't want to cross the line of.
SCRIMMAGE i think that's what you want to see in.
Camp but, yeah there just weren't many great options out,
there and you, KNOW i think that amazing defensive performance
just really stood.
Speaker 2 (19:31):
OUT i want to.
Speaker 1 (19:32):
Play this clip Of Jonathan cooper actually talking about why
he thinks The broncos could be the very best defense
in the.
Speaker 2 (19:42):
League i'll just say it being even more, dominant, honestly
no reason for us AND i would be the most
dominantly in the. League is enough to own this, pack
is enough to stopping, us which is even you, know
enough another. LEVEL i don't think any of us have
reached our.
Speaker 1 (19:58):
Potential and he keep working Into kami or the, best
the best in the, league, honestly AND i think that's
a goal they could certainly achieve this. SEASON i think
they are just a remarkable of a remarkably talented. Team
they have chemistry working together. Now and one THING i
(20:19):
keep circling back To Dance joseph after he was let
go In, denver talked about as he was getting That
arizona defense. Going people, forget but they had one great
season in like twenty twenty. One they're twenty twenty two
after he left The. BRONCOS i think it was the
second season he was, there but while that was going,
on he talked about how disappointed he was to get
(20:41):
fired from The broncos when he, did because he really
felt like year three is when his defense comes together
and really, gels and you get all the communication working
together and everyone's on the same page and reading each
other's mind and speaking the same. Language and he was
bummed he didn't get there In denver because he felt
like one more season and maybe they would have turned the.
CORNER i don't necessarily agree with that vision for his,
(21:02):
regime but it's something he emphasized. Heavily seeing all the
talent this defense has as Vance Joseph enters his third
year with the team has me remarkably.
Speaker 2 (21:13):
Excited we'll get.
Speaker 1 (21:14):
Back we'll get over to the offensive side of the
ball in a, second but first it's time to head
over for some.
Speaker 2 (21:21):
News you're listening To.
Speaker 1 (21:24):
Broncos Country night ON koa ninety four ONE, fm eight fifty,
am and welcome back to some more post.
Speaker 2 (21:35):
Rocky Broncos country.
Speaker 1 (21:37):
Tonight thank you for stopping in and joining me tonight
on This friday. NIGHT i hope you are having a
Great friday, night great end of your. Week staying safe out.
There we've Got broncos training camp. BACK i hope you
all will be making it out there On saturday to
catch Some broncos, action but if, not make sure you're
staying tuned TO. Koa we'll have you covered with a
(21:58):
little bit of a live show breaking all that, down
and then after the fact you'll find our articles and
social posts and whatever else recapping the day for. You
so if you can't be there in, person that's the
next best.
Speaker 2 (22:10):
Option for you to get your coverage of the.
Speaker 1 (22:12):
Event and even if you are, there make sure you
follow up after the fact so you can cover all
your bases and ensure you didn't miss.
Speaker 2 (22:21):
Anything heading.
Speaker 1 (22:23):
Over in the last, segment we went on the defensive
side of the. BALL i think they were kind of
the winners of the, day SO i wanted to open
up with that side for this training camp. Preview thought
the pass rush really shined and the coverage was, great
bringing a lot of energy from that side of the.
Ball but now let's head over to the. OFFENSE i
think that's what people are more invested. In this town
(22:45):
has been without an elite offense for so. LONG i
think everyone is understandably clamoring for that great.
Speaker 2 (22:52):
Attack still same thing with quarterback.
Speaker 1 (22:54):
Play you, know even though bo is a great step
in the right, direction last, year still been so long
since you had really high end difference making quarterback. PLAY
i think everyone wants to see. That and you, know
you can only pick up so much from a training camp.
Atmosphere BUT i think what we saw today should Have
Broncos country optimistic That boonix is taking another large step
(23:20):
in that direction this year last, year AND i think
this is only, understandable but last year for all of training,
camp AND i even think for a lot of the,
season even once things started getting better down the second
half of the, SEASON i think you could feel him
kind of bailing water all the, time Right he was
(23:41):
kind of laying down the track ahead of him as
the cart went over, it and just trying to figure
out how to keep his head above, water as most
tricky quarterbacks, are you. Know and it was and not
that he wasn't. Successful he was. Successful we had a
good rookie, year but it was kind of always scrambling
for a, solution a more frantic nature to oh my,
(24:01):
goodness you, know the defense is throwing of this to,
me what DO i do, Now and oftentimes he was
able to find a solid, answer but it wasn't the more, controlled,
tempoed kind of, paced intentional style of QUARTERBACKING i think
you see from The vets in this.
Speaker 2 (24:21):
Game and, Today.
Speaker 1 (24:25):
Oh looked so much more intentional and controlled AND i
guess thoughtful in his play than WHAT i think we
saw last. Year it seemed like the game was coming
to a much the game it slowed down for him a,
lot WHICH i think is. BIG i think one of
the maybe the biggest hole in his game last year
(24:47):
is it still looked like when the pressure, came and
offense did a great job minimizing, that but when the
pressure did, come his internal clock was still a little,
quick and he got pretty frantic pretty. Quick and you,
know that's why he was one of the worst quarterbacks
in the league in terms OF epa.
Speaker 2 (25:03):
Per drop back under.
Speaker 1 (25:04):
Pressure that's still you, know even on the stretch of last,
season was a, big glaring gap in his game. Today you,
know AS i talked about in the defensive, portion he
was under pressure all day, long and there was tight
coverage all over the, field AND i thought he consistently
made good decisions and found quality. Answers you, KNOW i
don't think you want to always Like Teddy bridgewater in
(25:26):
training camp was always going for the. Checkdown that was you,
know and in games that was kind of his, style
and you don't want to settle for that too. Quick
it's always going to work in training camp because no
one's going to like lay the hammer on.
Speaker 2 (25:36):
A two yard completion during a non padded.
Speaker 1 (25:39):
Practice SO i think you don't want to lean too
hard on that crutch because it's it's kind of cheating
during this period of. Practice then he saw the quarterbacks
go to it, some but again with, BO i felt
he was really using it as a last, resort as
a checkdown should, be you, know when he had to
scramble because the pressure. CAME i don't THINK i ever
(26:00):
saw him cross the line of scrimmage, today and he
was scrambling a, ton but he was stepping up in the,
pocket kind of shimming side to, side breaking contain rolling,
out keeping his eyes down, field and you, know firing
a laser and again all that STUFF i think is
very promising what you want to see from Bow. Nicks
And i'm buying a lot of Bow nick. Stock i'll
(26:21):
keep Reminding Broncos. COUNTRY i don't think he's a top
ten quarterback or even a top fifteen quarterback.
Speaker 2 (26:26):
YET i think he's probably more.
Speaker 1 (26:27):
In the eighteen nineteen, region and he has to prove
a good bit more before you can crown him as that.
Guy that's WHERE i think he is right now in
terms of what he showed last year that SAID i
would be buying all the Bow knicks stock for twenty twenty.
FIVE i think this is the guy who his whole
college and pro career has been defined by continuous growth and.
(26:49):
Development like his first year At auburn was so ridiculously.
Rough by the end of his college, career he's A
heisman runner, up right he you, know really strug was
in rookie minie camp last, year is killing it by
the end of training. Camp, rough first pre season, game,
great last preseason. Game, rough start to the, season great
close to the, season and just like every time he
(27:10):
takes that step, up it takes a, second but you
see overtime really large amounts of, growth AND i think
that's a. Skill you, Know, Sorry Drew locke was never
able to take those steps in his. Development he was
largely you, know his last year In, denver he was
largely the same player he was his first year at
The university Of, missouri And.
Speaker 2 (27:31):
Bonix is the exact opposite of.
Speaker 1 (27:33):
That and he's done all that in spite of the
fact that he's had a constantly rotating door of offensive
play callers and offensive. Coaches this is the first time
he's having carryover in that. Department and on top of,
that he's getting mentored in the, offense you, know getting
some private side coaching by the best in the, biz
(27:53):
at least as far as this offense is concerned With Drew.
Brees AND i think if you've you, know listened to
any Of Chase daniels work in, media or really any
of these Former Drew brees, backups they gush about how
much he gave them in terms of work ethic and
just the day to day like how you conduct yourself
as a franchise, quarterback not just you, know staying on
(28:15):
this straight and. NARROW i don't think there's any concerns
about bo, there but just you, know what does it
take to be an elite quarterback in this? League and you,
KNOW i Think bronix is learning from the very one
of the very best in that, department which has me very,
excited should have all Of broncos country very. EXCITED i
think the winner of the, day though on, offense was
(28:36):
a Different Oregon. DUCK i Think Troy franklin was the
man of the hour out there.
Speaker 2 (28:42):
Today just looks completely.
Speaker 1 (28:47):
Different And i'm sure the change in jersey number, helps
but if, anything you'd think eleven would be more, slimmy
and he looks so much bigger in a way THAT
i really think will be meaningful this. Season last year
he always looked, small which is. Surprising he's like a
six to three, receiver but he's so slender that you
(29:08):
know he looks like, this this kind of tiny. Guy
that's not the case. Anymore he has really filled out
that frame AND i don't to me looks more from
a physical. Standpoint he looks more like A Mark Hazvoudez
scantleing or, Something AND i think that's a good comp
for him at this, point maybe now where it's just
(29:29):
like great, height, weight speed guy who like running a straight,
line torched the defense deep and you know we'll hopefully
hit you on seven to eight of those deep balls every.
SEASON i think that's very attainable For Troy franklin or
maybe even more based on what we saw. Today you,
know the size was one big area of his game
and strength that he needed to. Improve just really struggled
(29:52):
at the catch point when when there was traffic, there
really struggled to get off of press coverage or more
physical corner because of, that that lack of strength and
power and.
Speaker 2 (30:03):
Size and so seeing him shore that.
Speaker 1 (30:06):
Up you hope that Translates we're gonna have to wait
to get you, know a solid read on that until
there's more contact in, practice but at least looks the.
Part and then the other flaws we all know was
the dropped deep. Balls Bo nix and him connected on
two three deep balls. Today STIDHAM i think hit him
on another on what was the play of the day
(30:27):
in my, opinion Sid and had pressure come off his,
SIDE i believe FROM q stepped up and just delivered
a dot in a really tight window downfield To. Troy
he was, JUST i, mean and every time the ball
went to, HIM i, still you, know gaffed LIKE i
was last, year going like oh, no oh, goodness this
is going to be a.
Speaker 2 (30:46):
Drop every single time he came.
Speaker 1 (30:47):
Through this year or, today and not all of them
were easy, targets so love to see. THAT i Think
ingram was another big highlight of the. Day just moves.
Differently he's different than anything The broncos have had at
tight end in a long. Time AND i think you
go even back Before Albert oh And Noah. Fan you
(31:10):
might have to go back To Julius thomas or. SOMETHING
i wasn't around in those days of training, camp BUT
i just can't think of another Guy i've ever seen
at camp who moves the Way Evan ingram does at
the tight end. Position you, know some of that Has
ben's mentioned a lot on here is he'sn't.
Speaker 2 (31:28):
A true tight.
Speaker 1 (31:29):
End he's kind of a wide receiver tight end hybrid
and you, know definitely a lighter.
Speaker 2 (31:33):
Body but it was cool watching him out there.
Speaker 1 (31:36):
TODAY i was thinking about What Benny fowler has said
ON i THINK Koa, sports but how to, Him Evan
ingram is very reminiscent OF, dt like this really, fluid
larger body who can move really well with the ball
in his, hands and you, know seeing him, TODAY i
think you definitely could pick up on. THAT i think
there's a concerted effort to build up that chemistry between
(31:58):
he And. Bow it seems like they're when there were
opportunities in the individual drills to pair up a given
receiver with a given quarterback or a given running back
with a given, quarterback it seemed like they were really
pushing The ingram And bow getting that extra time together
as much as. POSSIBLE i think that's, smart AND i
Think ingram movie generally pretty productive this. SEASON i am
(32:21):
very confident that he's going to have some red zone.
Production and, AGAIN i Know ben's highlighted on this show
that he hasn't really done that, before he hasn't been
that red zone guy in the. Past but just seeing
How Sean payton knew how to Use Jimmy grahaman knew
how to use these tight ends in the, past Like
Lucas kroll And Adam troutman And Nate adkins for crying out,
(32:42):
loud we're catching multiple touchdown passes in this offense last,
year WHERE i just think you get his movement skills
in his, size you line him up opposite At Courtland,
sutton and you just their defense is to pick their.
Poison what are you going to? Do you can't double
team both these, guys or if you, do you're going
to be very.
Speaker 2 (32:59):
Light in the. Box just run it in on.
Speaker 1 (33:00):
You but you, know pick your, poison we'll throw it
at the other one and we'll like our odds a good.
Speaker 2 (33:06):
BIT i think he's gonna.
Speaker 1 (33:09):
Very productive season in terms of, touchdowns is my productive
prediction for. HIM i think something that might get in
the way of that potentially could Is Caleb. LOANER i
don't think you have a massive offensive, role.
Speaker 2 (33:24):
But he does.
Speaker 1 (33:25):
Not one of the THINGS i highlighted in my article
THAT i dropped last week and you, know big storylines
to watch was how Ros Caleb Loner can this guy
contribute right?
Speaker 2 (33:33):
Away AND i think he.
Speaker 1 (33:35):
Can you, know there were clips coming out Of Caleb
loner And OTAs WHERE i thought it looked a little
clunky and, awkward just that six seven. Frame it looked
it looked like a little like a baby giraffe learning
how to, run you, know just a little.
Speaker 2 (33:48):
Funky but today it could not have been more.
Speaker 1 (33:53):
OPPOSITE i really tried to key in on him during
receiving periods where he was, targeted and you, know he
consistently adjusted to the ball pretty, naturally WHICH i thought
was big as catch rate At utah was surprisingly. Low
it didn't have the best ball, skills WHICH i think
makes sense given his lack of football, experience BUT i
(34:14):
thought he demonstrated good ball tracking ability and good hands,
today so love to see. That and then what was
impressive to me considering it was a big area of,
concern how smoothly he transitioned from you, know receiver to
ball carrier whenever he was. TARGETED i thought was very.
Promising and, again if you can JUST i don't think
(34:38):
you want to put a lot on his plate.
Speaker 2 (34:40):
EARLY i would.
Speaker 1 (34:42):
Take the long road with him and just try and, piecemeal,
like what are three four things we could ask this
guy to do this year where he's not an obvious
tendency tell but we can get him on the field BECAUSE.
Speaker 2 (34:55):
I JUST i don't know.
Speaker 1 (34:58):
How many defenses have a four defensive back like for
probably not.
Speaker 2 (35:03):
Many probably a small.
Speaker 1 (35:05):
HANDFUL i JUST i don't know who you're putting up
against this. Guy AND i remember he was a basketball.
Player he's got a good. Vertical it's not like he's He's,
Jokich no shame, there but Like jogic could be a
good receiver because he's seven, foot he's got a good.
Speaker 2 (35:22):
Wingspan good luck getting up. There if you're A.
Speaker 1 (35:24):
dB Caleb lohner's got the, wingspan in the height and
the reach and, everything and he can get up. There you,
know had had a few great jump ball receptions while At,
Utah SO i just if they can AND i Think
Sean payton will be able to figure it.
Speaker 2 (35:37):
Out he figured out how to do it With MEM's last.
Speaker 1 (35:39):
YEAR i JUST i think the sky could be the
limit there For Caleb, lohner very very excited about. That
Cortland sutton got a big crowd reaction when he came.
Out the moment he walked, out fan base saw him
started cheering and yelling for. Him one fan was even, like,
yeah court he acknowledged, them looked. Back it was kind
(36:02):
of cool to see that in the midst of a contract.
Situation it's all amicable now and friendly, now but it
was good to see those vibes still. MAINTAINED i think
the last little receiver Point i'll make, HERE i Think
Marvin mims is maybe the biggest OFFENSIVE x factor this.
Year you, know last, YEAR i think they really wanted
(36:24):
to see him be the other receiver in that, room you,
know kind of Be courtland And mims leading the, way
and it really didn't work early in the, season and
it wasn't until later on when they kind of relegated
him to this gadget role that they really figured out
how to Use. MIMS i think once again this, year
(36:46):
based on WHAT i saw, TODAY i think once again
they're hoping And valay's kind of their backup, plan BUT
i think they're Hoping Marvin mims can be that guy
in the room Alongside Courtland. Sutton and if he's able
to realize that, potential it cleans up the logjam at
the slot. Position it gives the offense something it really
(37:08):
doesn't have at THAT z receiver position in terms of
speed and field stretching, ability you, know even the ability
to do some some of the creative screen. Stuff and
if he doesn't do, it if he doesn't take that,
LEAP i think things get really messy for how can
We because everyone can Agree marvin ms is great with the.
Speaker 2 (37:30):
Ball in his.
Speaker 1 (37:31):
Hands the difficulty right now is how do we accomplish?
That because if he's relegated to the slot, Man Pat
bryant's going to be playing some. There you, Know valat's
going to be playing some. There Evan ingram's going to
be playing some. There Troy, franklin if he looks anything
like he did, today is certainly going to be playing some.
There so how do you maintain men's role in this
(37:51):
offense with all those mouths to feat who can thrive
on the. Inside i'm curious to see that he had
a great day to day working on the. Outside he's
not gonna have to face the coverage or the more
physical coverage right, now SO i think that's worth. Noting
but looked pretty good. OVERALL i thought it was a
good day for the. Offense he's a better day for the.
(38:13):
Defense but some really exciting things to continue to watch
throughout training. CAMP i definitely once again would Advise bronco's
country to get out. There last little Take i'll leave you.
WITH i imagine everyone's curious about the running. BACKS i
KNOW i haven't spent too much time on. THAT i
just think it's hard to get a read on that
at this point in training. Camp But i'll tell you, this, MAN.
Speaker 2 (38:33):
Rj harvey is.
Speaker 1 (38:35):
Built that guy just looks different out. THERE i mean.
Speaker 2 (38:41):
Everyone's heard the Quad zilla.
Speaker 1 (38:43):
STUFF i tried to zero in on him as he ran,
by AND i could see his quads just popping out
of his leg with every. Step it was something different and, anyways
everybody that's going to do it for me for this.
Segment i'll be right back though at the top of
the hour to talk more About bronco's training, camp running
through every single level of The bronco, defense and how
they performed. Today stay tuned for that coming up ON
(39:04):
koa ninety four ONE fm eight fifty.
Speaker 2 (39:06):
Am
