Speaker 1 (00:50):
A lot of stuff to get to here in a
short hour. We're gonna replay a little bit of the
interview we had with Matt Barrows when I was on
This Afternoon with Ryan Edwards on Kowai Sports.
Speaker 3 (00:58):
We'll do that at the of the hour.
Speaker 2 (01:01):
But right now let's let's get to an NFL six back.
It's time for the NFL six pad.
Speaker 1 (01:06):
I'm gonna track a lot of beer guy insight and
inside information you can't find anywhere else.
Speaker 2 (01:12):
I know, six the top six NFL headlines.
Speaker 4 (01:16):
What Every week the NFL has been releasing at ten
players in their annual.
Speaker 3 (01:22):
Top one hundred players list.
Speaker 4 (01:23):
This week we got players fifty through forty one. Those
rankings have Baker Mayfield at fifty, quin Yon Mitchell at
forty nine, Jonathan Grenard at forty eight, Tyreek Hill at
forty seven, Will Anderson Junior at forty six, Trent Williams
at forty five, Mike Evans at forty four, Jalen Carter
at forty three, Dion Dawkins at forty two, and Puka
(01:44):
Nakua at forty one. What do you make of those
ten unveilings, the order there, and do you think any
of those ten players are clearly being overrated or underrated?
Speaker 1 (01:54):
I think for those guys will be top twenty guys
for me. So I don't you know, again, the way
they rake these and whatever else, I don't know. I
tend to disagree with this stuff. I tend not to
not to like their rankings and whatnot, and it just
feels to me like there's I don't know what the
process is, like what the criterion is for, you know,
And so the end of the day, I get a
(02:15):
little weird, like Trent Williams should obviously be higher. There
was a couple of the names in there on Doc
Dawkins probably should be higher.
Speaker 3 (02:21):
What was the.
Speaker 4 (02:22):
Higher Dawkins was one that said up should go No,
you're fine. Jalen Carter and Puka Nakua. Yeah, no not
so don't go back too.
Speaker 5 (02:30):
Uh yeah, Mike Evans Evans, I mean that's ling Carter Carter,
that's about Roy Anderson Jr.
Speaker 3 (02:37):
That should probably be higher. It's gonna be interesting to
see the top.
Speaker 2 (02:42):
This is I mean these is a forty through fifty people, right,
forty fifty? Yeah, this is this is I mean will Anderson.
There's not forty better players in the league than will
Anderson Junr.
Speaker 3 (02:49):
There's just not Yep. That was one that stood out
to me. Trent Williams.
Speaker 4 (02:52):
I was with you on Island Pukah, I feel should
maybe be a hair higher.
Speaker 3 (02:55):
With the crazy first two years he's.
Speaker 4 (02:57):
Had, even in this like fuck of ten what surprised
me was Dion Dawkins above Trent Williams.
Speaker 3 (03:03):
Two tackles there. That's very odd to absurd. So yeah, yeah,
I think.
Speaker 2 (03:07):
They're both higher than forty though.
Speaker 6 (03:09):
In the NFL, dionn and Trim Williams.
Speaker 2 (03:13):
Like Trent Williams is a top three tackle, right, I
mean at least three, you know, like that's I try
to pay the floor by, you.
Speaker 4 (03:20):
Know, yeah, no, I agree, like it's him Lane Johnson
and like Denays the three those are the three that
your name is, I like Kristin Wurs, I guess like
that that's the elite for.
Speaker 3 (03:29):
I don't know anyway, I tend to these things are
done for.
Speaker 1 (03:33):
A reaction to begin with. They're done as engagement baits.
So that's what they're doing. They're getting my exasperated rage
right now. Similar to you if they put Justin Fields
on anything other than the worst quarterback alive.
Speaker 4 (03:44):
And to the goodness and to that point that not
Justin Fields won. But these ballots are funky. I imagine
there's some levels of tying or I doubt it's a
clean one to one hundred stack, and you probably get
more reactions if there is a tie tackle between to
Deon Dawkins and the Trent and Williams, you'd probably get
more reactions putting Deon Dawkins.
Speaker 3 (04:04):
At That's how that stuff goes too.
Speaker 4 (04:08):
Some less fun news here, Texan safety Jimmy Ward was
arrested for the second time in as many months, this
time in connection with a bail violation. This arrest now
potentially could cloud his comeback season from a foot injury
that saw him not play at all in twenty twenty four.
Are you concerned or sorry? Do you think Jimmy Ward
(04:28):
will be suspended? And is this the end of Jimmy
Ward's time with the Houston Texans?
Speaker 2 (04:32):
Might be the interesting thing there is they got some
some dB issues because CJGJT got deemed up.
Speaker 3 (04:39):
Now, the good news for him is he supposed to
be back. Johnson Garner Johnson supposed to be back. What
was that injury?
Speaker 2 (04:45):
Well, somebody was reporting it was like an ACL or
something on that. It's an issue and he's supposed to
be back by Well, it could be back as soon
as week one.
Speaker 3 (04:56):
That's much better.
Speaker 2 (04:57):
Yeah, So I don't know who was initially reporting whatever
they reported, but.
Speaker 3 (05:03):
The news on that is that it's better that.
Speaker 2 (05:04):
Everybody thought, and he should be back, you know, fairly
earlier this season. What was Jimmy Ward arrested for the
first time.
Speaker 4 (05:11):
I'll have to look that up that I believe. Yeah,
this was a vile violation in connection with that. And
now again two arrests in one off season. I believe
he's probably going to see himself suspended for at least
some portion of the season. This time was alcohol in
his blood which violated his bond.
Speaker 3 (05:31):
Yeah, his bond as he couldn't.
Speaker 2 (05:33):
He was arrested for a woman called authorities and claimed
that he had assaulted, strangled and threatened her. There was
an emergency protective order that was filed at her request.
Ward was held on thirty thousand dollars bail and part
of the conditions of his bond process was that he
could not drink alcohol. Now he's claiming he was not aware.
Speaker 3 (05:52):
That he could not drink alcohol.
Speaker 1 (05:54):
So that is in ignorance of the law and out
of defense, it's not but in terms of.
Speaker 3 (06:01):
With the team, with the team and they're not beholden
to that.
Speaker 2 (06:05):
So three.
Speaker 4 (06:10):
Ashton Genty's debut was a little underwhelming there for the
Las Vegas Raiders, with the running back carrying the ball
three times and his rushes went for three yards, zero
yards and.
Speaker 2 (06:19):
Negative four yards.
Speaker 4 (06:21):
What do you make of that debut from Ashton genty
And do you think you're at all concerned at this
point with what his twenty twenty five impact will look like.
Speaker 2 (06:30):
I was already concerned with what his impact was going
to be. I didn't think he was the.
Speaker 1 (06:33):
Best running back in his class, and like most people,
the Raiders offensive line certainly did him no favors. I
don't know if you watched that, but if you saw it,
it looked like five guys that were out to get
their running back killed.
Speaker 3 (06:45):
You know, I think Jan you will be fine in
the league.
Speaker 1 (06:49):
But you know, I think the crowning of him was
a little premature, especially behind that line. To be honest
with you, he wasn't even the best running back from
Boise State on the field last night when the kid
from Seattle there was was balling out. And I don't
know if you guys saw Trevion Henderson today with the
one hundred yard kick return and the eighteen yard carry,
this is only two touches that he had for the Patriots. Oh,
(07:12):
he also had three receptions. For twelve yardsxcuse me for
the Patriots. He looked like an absolute snud out there.
So you know, just something to something to keep your on. Yeah,
I think the offensive line.
Speaker 4 (07:23):
I'm not worried about Ashton Genty, it's one preseason game.
I'm a little bit worried about the offensive line and
how that will impact his production. To your point, just
because they played their starters and Seattle did not, and
it looked like that scene out of the Adam Sandler
Longest Yard where the offensive lineman just let the pass
rush through. It was you had four guys three four
yards in the backfield, only one offensive lineman won their rep.
(07:46):
I just and I wonder if you're a Raiders fan
right now, you baby have some draft day regrets looking
back at armand Benbu a great tackle prospect who goes
number seven one pick later, and you wound up taking.
Speaker 3 (07:58):
The running back who you might not even be want
to get the most out of that, right, Yeah.
Speaker 2 (08:02):
I mean it's gonna be an adventure there for the
Raiders this year, and certainly I think they're getting used
to the Chip Kelly, you know kind of thing, so
that's it's going to be interesting.
Speaker 1 (08:12):
I think again, I think it'd be fine, but there
was a lot of premature crowning of Ashton Janty before that.
Speaker 3 (08:18):
People probably should have done that for Yeah.
Speaker 4 (08:21):
Definitely makes them look like a less appealing fantasy option.
Now former CSU ran another Mountain West rookie, Tory Horton, had.
Speaker 2 (08:29):
A nice preseason debut.
Speaker 4 (08:30):
He made three catches for thirty one yards and a
touchdown in the Seattle in the Seattle Seahawks preseason debut
against the Las Vegas Raiders. Do you think Tory Horton
could supplant Mark haz Voutis Scantleen as the Seahawks number
three wide receiver and what are your expectations for that
Clint Kubiak led Seahawks offense this season.
Speaker 2 (08:50):
Well, that's something we talked about before I talked about
Kelley Sports earlier in the week that I got reports
that Horton was balling out up there in Seattle and
might supplant veiled this gantling So certainly playing well enough
to kind of show that the fact that he's getting
these reps is certainly showing. You know, the Drew Locke
experience was on in full effect. We saw that touchdown.
(09:12):
We also saw that interception where you were like, what
are you doing? I don't think that Seattle is going
to be a great football team this year. They'd be okay,
I don't think they have enough pieces on offense. You know,
we'll see, but you know, certainly a whole lot of
the running back was out.
Speaker 3 (09:28):
There falling out. He was, you know, end of the day,
Sam Donold behind that line. I'm not buying that.
Speaker 1 (09:34):
And you know, Mike McDonald's the defense looked good last year.
We'll see what that's able to do, what they're able
to do in year two there. But I still think
Arizona's going to win the NFC West. I can't say
that one enough. I believe Arizona wi win the NFC West.
I think you Rams have quarterback issues.
Speaker 2 (09:49):
They did Niners have issues all over the roster, and
so does Seattle, and so I think Arizona's in line
to make a run at an NFC West.
Speaker 5 (09:56):
Get your stakeh order ready at It's a gutsy pick.
It's a gutsy I have been known five.
Speaker 4 (10:04):
Another Colorado or a player from a Colorado college. Former
CU buff Lejonte Wester scored an eighty seven yard punt
return in his NFL preseason debut last night for the
Baltimore Ravens.
Speaker 3 (10:17):
Another guy potentially.
Speaker 4 (10:18):
Competing for the number three, maybe number four wide receiver job.
Speaker 3 (10:22):
What do you think Wester's rule will be.
Speaker 4 (10:24):
This season for the Baltimore Ravens and which prime coached draft.
Speaker 3 (10:29):
Pick other than Travis Hunter. I think the obvious answer.
Speaker 4 (10:32):
Do you expect we'll have either the best career or
best season this year?
Speaker 2 (10:36):
That's a good question.
Speaker 3 (10:38):
You know, probably Western or Horn.
Speaker 1 (10:39):
You'd think Unlet's you know, a defensive player, Pichador goes
off and yeah, the starting job, yeah.
Speaker 3 (10:46):
Which she's looked pretty serviceable so far.
Speaker 2 (10:50):
Yeah, I think Western probably has a good chance because
he's gonna be a return man and know receiver for
the Ravens. So who gets some opportunities potentially to do that?
Speaker 3 (10:59):
We'll see. I think those are probably your.
Speaker 2 (11:02):
Best bets Western Horn. I like that.
Speaker 4 (11:04):
I'm excited to see what Horn does to I. Western
had a really nice debut, and I think tes Walker
for the Ravens has apparently been having a really good camp.
But after DeAndre Hopkins in that three spot, it is
wide open in terms of opportunities, and even with Hopkins like,
I don't think he wowed last year for the Chiefs.
I think there's maybe even some room to climb even
higher than that number four spot in the Ravens.
Speaker 3 (11:25):
Yeah, I'm with you on that.
Speaker 1 (11:27):
And the Ravens have had, you know, bad injury luck
at the at the skill position, the receiving positions over
the last couple of matter of fact, likely he's out
right now. You have Mark Andrewstilling in, but they you know,
they've had bad luck with that. There are going to
be opportunities there probably for Wester this year.
Speaker 6 (11:41):
And you think if he can get on the same
page with Lamar on some of those plays that break down,
Lamar Scraham went around.
Speaker 2 (11:47):
A deep threat with his speed.
Speaker 4 (11:48):
Yeah, and to that point, he's got experience, not that
Sanders has Jackson's legs, but would do a lot of
that looping back in the pocket, extending plays and kind
of have these crazy scrambled drobe moments.
Speaker 2 (11:59):
And we saw Western thrive with us YEP six last
one here.
Speaker 4 (12:03):
Tanner McKee and the Eagles offensive backup scored on five
of the team's first six drives last night against Grant's
beloved Bengals. Okay, including a number of scores against the
Bengals starting defense. That not all six of those drives
came against the starters, but the Bengals did put their
starting defense out at.
Speaker 3 (12:22):
The beginning of the game last night.
Speaker 4 (12:24):
What do you make of that defensive performance from the
Bengals And how worried do you think Bengals fans like
our beloved Grant should be about their twenty twenty five
out lots.
Speaker 1 (12:32):
I think they're all acutely aware that the Bengals did
not even bother to attempt to field a defense this year,
paying t Higgins, Jamar Chase and Joe Burroll the money,
and then in the dead of free agency going out
and adding Noahfense on top of it. You know, I
think the Bengals are going to be the best team
to score forty five points and lose ten games.
Speaker 2 (12:53):
So we'll see, you know, we'll see what goes on there.
But if you were expecting defense from the Bengals this year,
I think you're in for a wood awakening.
Speaker 6 (13:02):
I think this is going to be how a lot
of games sadly go this year. Joe Burrow almost perfect
with one hundred and twenty three yards and two touchdowns
and his two drives and the Bengals defense given up
thirty plus points and finding a way to lose.
Speaker 3 (13:15):
You got to see why the Eagles made that Jacoreyan
Venet trade.
Speaker 4 (13:17):
I mean, kieliy Ringo was brutalized by Joe Burrow in
that one, and I agree, you know, the expectations probably
weren't that high for the Bengals defense, but you need
to get something out of him, and getting a boat
raced by Tanner McKeon company is pretty pretty scary. I
mean maybe you could say, hey, it's base defense and
(13:37):
it's just preseason, but it looks like there's a real
talent discrepancy there for him.
Speaker 3 (13:41):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (13:42):
I mean, the Bengals starting defense is lacking, you know,
talent when you start, you know, delving back into it.
Speaker 3 (13:47):
And Tanner McKee's got a little something to him and
I don't know that he's a starter in this league.
Speaker 1 (13:50):
He started to spots start maybe ability, you know for
him to go out there, and the Eagles are just
chock full of talent too.
Speaker 3 (13:55):
That's the other side of this, you know.
Speaker 2 (13:57):
So but end of the day, I mean, the Bengals
are not going to be a team team defensively, that's
going to do much that eleven reasonably placed road Cones
wouldn't do.
Speaker 3 (14:06):
Also Orange right ten.
Speaker 1 (14:08):
Plus Trey Hendrickson right right, right, Well if he get
him back in the fold, which I think, we'll see
how that goes. Zach, I appreciate it. You're not gonna
be on thear tomorrow. That this just kind of energy,
that's hot fire that we've got right now. We're gonna
be at preseason Toronco's game Day preseason addition tomorrow.
Speaker 4 (14:24):
I believe the three pm, yeah, three pm to four
thirty we'll be in here, will.
Speaker 2 (14:29):
Be succeeded by one Ryan Edwards.
Speaker 3 (14:32):
It will be a lot of fun.
Speaker 1 (14:33):
Yeah, you haven't done Broncos game Day yet, have you?
Speaker 3 (14:36):
No, not proper.
Speaker 4 (14:37):
I mean I've ran it behind the boarding, but not
the proper on my stuff. So I'm excited for that good,
good preseason.
Speaker 3 (14:44):
Matchup to preview.
Speaker 4 (14:45):
I think I'm just excited to get a good read
on this Broncos offense, Broncos defense, the rookies for the
first time. Like training camp's a nice appetizer, but it's
hard to eat your own guys to really kind of
get a, you know, a true pulse on that said,
Broncos is gonna be star well, they'll be playing their starters.
The Niners will not, So you know a little tilted there.
Speaker 1 (15:05):
But you know, an opportunity for these guys to come
out and shine, and you hope that they will. Any
particular players you're gonna have your eye on, specifically in
the in the gadom More night.
Speaker 3 (15:13):
I think R J.
Speaker 4 (15:14):
Harvey I said it the other night, but I think
running back is a position where you can actually kind
of get a good feel, especially relative to the other
positions in pre season about how that's going to play out.
Speaker 2 (15:23):
And R. J.
Speaker 4 (15:24):
Harvey I think has a lot weighing on him this
year because if it's not him, it's got to be
estimated someone.
Speaker 3 (15:30):
But someone has to step up to kind of be
the floor razor in that room. JK.
Speaker 4 (15:34):
Dobbins is a nice ceiling or sorry, the JK. Dobbins
is a nice floor raizer. They need to find a
ceiling razor in that room. He was fine for the
Chargers last year, but after Week five six, his legs
kind left him and he wasn't that dynamic of an option.
I think you need to find someone else who can
buoy that room. Help it be the Sean Paynon and
all his media appearances this year keeps talking about how
(15:56):
well we're giving bow Nicks a weapon in the run game,
and that the weapon we're giving him for that to
come to fruition, RJ. Harvey has to be a real
deal dude from the jump. And so I'm excited to
see that against forty nine ers line that, especially if
they're only playing the backups, the Broncos should be able
to run all over them in that first quarter.
Speaker 3 (16:13):
Yeah they should.
Speaker 2 (16:14):
They should come out and get a couple of easy
scores and go from there.
Speaker 1 (16:18):
And you know, that's the thing, like we always say,
don't don't let ever let him, don't let him take
you off the field.
Speaker 2 (16:21):
Play well enough, they can't take you off the field.
Don't ever let him tell you know, similar to the
way that Grant Smith doesn't let people tell him.
Speaker 3 (16:27):
No what he goes in for that second ice cream
right there? Look at him.
Speaker 1 (16:29):
Look that that is a happy man back there with
his second ice cream cone. I saw, Oh is it
the third?
Speaker 3 (16:38):
He won't even look at me, if he won't even
look in the eye right now.
Speaker 4 (16:41):
Yeah, I walked back in there to grab my six
pack sheet and I was like, God, damn, he's got
a huge He's got a huge uh sorry ice cream.
Speaker 3 (16:51):
He made a face there and threw me off.
Speaker 4 (16:52):
He's got a huge bucket of ice cream and a
giant stack of ice cream.
Speaker 2 (16:57):
Go well, Joey Jordan came in Clutch with the he's
got that big tub ice back there, the Vidal payment
that brought the cones in on.
Speaker 4 (17:02):
Tom Jordan Snach king Man, he always comes through with
some good good eats in the city came to Clutch.
Speaker 2 (17:07):
I told, you know, because my guy Tony Man's retired
this week, and I was joking with Jody and I
was like, yeah, I thought I was really gonna miss Tony.
But then Jody comes in Clutch with snacks right here.
Speaker 3 (17:15):
I don't know. I don't know. He's given Tony a
run for the money. Tony. If you hear me, he
saved me.
Speaker 4 (17:19):
There's been too many late night Rockies games where I'm like,
I'm dying for food.
Speaker 3 (17:23):
When was he going to show up?
Speaker 4 (17:24):
And the jod he comes in for his news broadcast
with with a dang pie and I get uncovered.
Speaker 2 (17:28):
We got time for the story real quick. I don't
know if we should tell us on the air.
Speaker 3 (17:31):
But I will.
Speaker 1 (17:31):
I needed a gummy one time, you know, to get
to sleep or whatever. So you know, Joy's Joey's a man.
He knows these kinds of things. Guy, all right, So
he got me. So Jody got me a gun. He
told me, here, you go take this and you'd be
you'd be good in about fifteen minutes or so.
Speaker 2 (17:44):
Yeah, it was not fifteen minutes. It was twelve. And
I took that thing entirely before I got home. And
I'm on Highland's Parks, Highland's Race Parkway, driving seven miles
an hour try to get home because that thing had
already kicked in for me to get to sleep.
Speaker 4 (18:02):
My dad one time was having to pick some family
up from the airport and thought he took just was
beating a normal pretzel, and he took a one hundred
milligram pretzel and it quickly became the quelude scene.
Speaker 3 (18:17):
Out of The Wolf of Austrie.
Speaker 4 (18:18):
He was he was walking around our house, leaned up
against the wall.
Speaker 3 (18:22):
Oh, I just barely confunction.
Speaker 4 (18:24):
He came back into the room where I was because
he's like, I'm worried.
Speaker 3 (18:29):
I'm gonna choke on my tongue. I need you to
watch me for and I had to end up going.
Speaker 2 (18:32):
I don't remember if our family.
Speaker 3 (18:33):
From the airport.
Speaker 1 (18:34):
I don't know if Tobby Moore or Black Sheep, but
the scene with Spade and Farley are in the car whatever,
the cop pulls him over and he's going and then
you figure out that he pulled him over. They pulled
it at the median and he's asking how fast they
were going and they're like, I don't know, seventy's like two.
Speaker 2 (18:48):
You were going to oh this, yeah, not as good
as a cheech and tong scene. No no, no, no,
but that's a that's an old time classic. So we
come back with you this Matt Merrell's interview Ryan I
did with Kiawa Sports.
Speaker 1 (19:02):
You listen to Broncos Country night right here on kiawey.
Speaker 7 (19:06):
Man am I driving?
Speaker 1 (19:09):
Okay?
Speaker 3 (19:17):
I think we're far had a chance with Ryan Everards.
Speaker 2 (19:27):
To sit down here and do an interview with Matt
Barrels from the Athletic talk a little bit about what
he saw out there at forty nine ers practice with
the Broncos, And here's that interview. Matt, thank you so
much for the time. Man how are you.
Speaker 7 (19:41):
I'm doing well. How are you guys?
Speaker 3 (19:42):
We're doing great.
Speaker 2 (19:43):
Let's start with the forty nine ers. Boy, a lot
of departures this offseason for that team, and certainly a
down year for them.
Speaker 3 (19:52):
What's where's the fan.
Speaker 2 (19:53):
Base at, where's the expectation at for this upcoming year?
Speaker 7 (19:56):
I think it's measured And a lot of the departure
were to Denver. So the Broncos gain was the forty
nine Ers loss, and we saw that a little bit,
you know, yesterday in the joint practice. No Drake green law,
but Telenoa Hufanga looked good wearing a new number number nine.
It was in the twenties when he was here. But yeah,
(20:18):
I mean it was such a you know, the sixth
win season last year, so that's that's automatically gonna reset expectations.
And as you guys know, the off season is all
about pumping up the expectations. It's just, you know, it's
six months of hype really for a lot of teams,
and the forty nine Ers have had that, you know,
they I think the top thing is that some of
(20:42):
their stars that were hurt last year, namely Christian McCaffrey,
looked like they're back. And you know, when you've got McCaffrey,
when you've got George Kittle on offense, that's a pretty
good combination right there. And then on defense you've got
Nick Bosa and you've got Fred Warners. It's still a
team that's got a lot of high end talent. I
(21:03):
think the question with the forty nine ers is whether
they're able to build that second tier, that second class
of players. And I think last year's draft helped. This
year's draft is bill wait and see, but they need
they need the rank and file of this team to
thrive up and you know, not get to the level
(21:26):
of a Christian diccaffery or George Kittle, but be a
good supporting cast for them. And that's really the the
unknown right now.
Speaker 2 (21:34):
What is the temperature like with a return of Robert
Sala and what is a de facto trade I guess
of defensive coordinator Sala for Steve Wilkes who heads to
New York is their defensive coordinator?
Speaker 7 (21:46):
Yeah, I mean it's all been good. You know, Salah's
got his work cut out for him. He's not inheriting
a ready made defense. I mentioned Bosen Warner. That's really
it as far as a you know what the nation
at large would recognize from from the forty nine ers.
The rest of the defensive line is then rebuilt with
(22:08):
Greenlaw and Denver that Warner is going to have a
new sort of robin to his batman this year, and
then the secondary is either young or it's relatively unknown,
so a lot of the pieces of that defense are new.
I think one of the reasons why the forty nine
(22:29):
ers were so intent on Sala was not only the
familiarity factor, but the fact that he's been in this
situation before. He came in in twenty seventeen with Kyle
Shanahan and it was a bad defense at that point.
So he's done the rebuild, the revamp. He did that here,
he did that with the Jets. This one isn't going
(22:50):
to be quite the project those other ones were, but
that part of it and Shawa knew that coming in,
and you know, this is part of of why the
forty nine ers were so eager to get him, because
he has rebuilt defenses in the past.
Speaker 2 (23:07):
Check with Matt Barrels from the athletic. From the fans perspective,
the departures of Drake green Law and Teleno Hufongo.
Speaker 3 (23:14):
How were they received.
Speaker 7 (23:15):
Well, I think the green Law one was the bigger
dist appointment because the people thought, well, first of all,
everyone saw what this defense is like without Drake leen
Law last year. As you know, he only played in
one half of football. It was a sensational half of football,
but that was it, and they really struggled at that
(23:36):
position in the other game. So you know, taking him
away was just such a histark signal about how important
he was, and the forty nine ers tried to resign
him and he decided that he wanted to go to Denver.
Money was a factor, but I also think that being
(23:56):
you know, the guy in charge's state here, he always
would have been playing second fiddle to Fred Warner. In Vendver,
he gets to be the guy, and I think that
was important to him. So that was probably the bigger
of the two losses. You know, whether that remains the
case in the regular season remains to be seen. Like
(24:18):
I said, I thought the Hufanga stood out at the
practice yesterday, and the forty nine ERDs don't really have
a lot of ready replacements at safety, certainly not right
now that they've got a rookie that they drafted last year,
Malac Mustafa, who's who fund alike, But he's coming off
an ACL so he's not gonna be ready to begin
(24:40):
the season. They're going to have two probably two little
known starters, Jason Tinnock and Richie Grant. Perhaps so if
we don't really know how those guys are going to function,
But it could be that that that whufun the loss
is more sorely missed this year.
Speaker 1 (25:00):
Are we going to get back to seeing a Kyle
Shanahan level offense? It felt like last year, you know,
it was because of injury and a lot of things
that it felt like it didn't feel like a normal
Kyle Shanahan offense. Here, you look at the roster this
year and three of the top five guys for receptions
last year either hurt and contract.
Speaker 3 (25:17):
Disputes are gone.
Speaker 1 (25:19):
I know you guys are expecting a big step up
from from Ricky Pearsall and he's got all the talent
in the world and getting McCaffrey back, But where what
is the optimism surrounding the productivity of the offense.
Speaker 7 (25:28):
Yeah, I think it's gonna be something where the offense
gets better as the year goes on. You know Brandon
and I you because a big piece of this offense,
he's not going to be available. He's offered an ACL
an ACL plus. Really it was ACL and other damage
in the dy on October twenty, So he's probably not
going to be back for the month of September. I
(25:50):
would say that that's my guess. So he comes back
into practice and then you know, we're going to go
through the whole storyline. Well, he's back, but he's not
really fully back. So I'm predicting that you know, by
the end of the season, he's going to be back
in full Ricky Pearsall presumably would have a lot more
(26:10):
stars under his belt, and I think at that point
you would see the real Kyle Shanahan offense. Until that point,
I think that you know, the team that's going to
rely on the run, perhaps more than it has in
the past, maybe more twelve personnel, two tight end personnel.
That was sort of their big and I put that
(26:31):
in quotations big free agent signing Luke Ferrell. He's a
blocking tight end. So I think that you're going to
see a lot of Ferrell and George Kittle out there,
and that should make Christian McCaffery happy. I mean, being
able to handle those edges, to do that that zone
running that they do that Broncos fans are so familiar
(26:52):
with from the late nineties. You know that that could
be what kind of gets the forty nine ers going
the season and going well into mid season in late
season when they get some bodies back.
Speaker 2 (27:07):
The last one I have for you, Matt, and I
really appreciate the time as always. Can you maybe clear
up or explain what you saw at practice yesterday for
everybody because it's been fascinating out here, of course Broncos
fans following along on Twitter and the different perceptions and
that's what it is, right, I mean, different beat people
have different views on what it is. But you tend
(27:29):
to be pretty level headed in your analysis. I'd just
love to know what you saw really from the Broncos
side of things, their defense, their offense, that type of thing.
Speaker 7 (27:37):
I was able to follow both fairly closely. And we're
talking about team situations. Yes, So once they went into
the eleven on eleven stuff, I thought that the Broncos
defense just really throttled the forty nine Ers first team offense.
And it was like that for most of the practice.
You know, Christian McCaffrey's first run was stuff, the second
(28:00):
run was stuff. I think the first four or five
were stopped at the line, and then then the forty
nine ers broke a fairly decent size game, but they
did a good job with him. Ricky Pearsall was shut
down early in the practice when they went to the
move the ball period. This is late practice. I thought
that's when the forty nine ers started to show up
(28:23):
a little bit better. And you know, Party was able
to score a touchdown was it was a throw to Piersoll.
The second team offense also scored. So I think that
the forty nine ers offense started to win the practice
quote unquote, you know towards the end. So I'd say
Denver won two thirds of it and maybe the forty
(28:46):
nine ers who won a third. And then on the
other side of things, and I think that Nick Bosha
and that defensive line Nick Bosa and Bryce Bryce Huff,
the two defensive ends really tavoc on the Broncos offensive line.
I thought that the left side of the Broncos offensive
line kept letting them down and so there were a
(29:09):
lot of you know, sacks in either training camp sacks
of course, where Bosha will run by blow Knicks and
sort of tap him on the shoulder or the shoulder
pad or something like that to indicate that he had
gotten there. On a lot of plays though, And this
is what sort of impressed me, And I was behind
bow Knicks this whole practice. He would escape and he
(29:33):
would either pick up a big game with his legs
or I was impressed by what a good thrower he
was on the run. He was really good at improvising,
And that seemed to be where, at least when we're
talking about the Broncos first team offense, that seemed to
be where their big plays were on broken plays where
(29:54):
Nis was able to as live and then put together
a nice, nice, nice pass down the field. So I mean,
it's something to take away for both of those teams.
But I don't think when it came to two minute drill,
I don't think that the Broncos offense did quite as
well against the forty nine ers defense as vice versa.
Speaker 2 (30:16):
Yep, I appreciate your level headed approach as always, Matt.
Thank you so much for the time that I'm.
Speaker 7 (30:20):
In all right, anytime, guys, talk to you soon.
Speaker 2 (30:28):

that must have you never had a margarita on a
sunny day, never.

a really good old Fashion somewhere not too long but

Speaker 2 (33:22):

tobacco to smoke the glass first or whatever it was.
