Speaker 1 (00:00):
A big show tonight.
Speaker 2 (00:01):
I'm Grant Smith filling in for Ben, joined by Nick
Ferguson and Steve Atwater the Hall of Famer and Studio.
Later tonight we got romy Bean and Rick Lewis joining
the show. What's going to break Down? Zack Seeker's new
article recap in the preseason for the Broncos.
Speaker 1 (00:15):
Steve, welcome in, Man, How are you man? I'm doing good,
doing well?
Speaker 2 (00:19):
Man.
Speaker 1 (00:20):
This day is always kind.
Speaker 3 (00:22):
Of sad today and tomorrow because you know, guys who
wanted to live out their dreams as an NFL player,
it's going to end for some of them, and you.
Speaker 1 (00:30):
Know it's kind of sad for me.
Speaker 2 (00:32):
Yeah, well it is tough, and you know, we'll go
through the cuts as they come in tonight. So far
already as of the start of our show, Andrew Farmer,
Walking Davis, Micah Abraham, Joshua Pickett, Clay Webb, Xavier Trust,
Michael dwumfour, I hope I got that correct, Garrett Nelson,
Jerwan Newton, Audric Estimey. That was a big one. The
(00:53):
Marie Mathis and Blake Watson also big ones.
Speaker 1 (00:56):
Nick, how are you man?
Speaker 2 (00:57):
And has anything stood out so far for you for
the cut.
Speaker 1 (01:01):
Uh, glad to join you guys.
Speaker 4 (01:03):
And what stood out from the cuts was I wasn't
on that list.
Speaker 1 (01:07):
You've been on that list before you list.
Speaker 4 (01:10):
I've been on that list more times than I actually
wanted to. And it's like Steve said, it's always a
difficult time when guys get cut.
Speaker 1 (01:20):
You spend it when you're thinking that you made the team.
Speaker 4 (01:23):
Well, see, that was the whole thing I learned when
I first got into the league. Even when you think
you made the team, you didn't make the team, even
if you passed the first run of cuss exactly because
for me it happened to me not once but twice
where I made the team. Say you coming in to
practice and then you know, you know, you got to
(01:46):
just poked out. You're ready to go, and then someone say, yeah,
let me let you talk really quickly, let me coach.
Speaker 1 (01:52):
To see in his office.
Speaker 4 (01:53):
Yeah, before you have that breakfast, let me how.
Speaker 1 (01:59):
That free practice. Yeah, let's get you up stare at
the last supper in before you go ahead. But it
is one of.
Speaker 4 (02:07):
Those difficult times, especially if you're a veteran guy like you.
Think about Themary Mathis was always in a tough spot
to begin with, and I know he was drafted. I
think maybe Big Big Fangier drafted him in the third round.
But it gets a point where another coaching staff comes in.
You have to continue to show improve and with you know,
(02:28):
Roddy Moss and draft and Joddie Barron and having Jakua McMillan,
that put him in a very tough spot.
Speaker 1 (02:34):
It was going to be hard for him to make
the team.
Speaker 2 (02:36):
Anyway, even Chris abrams Strain, who showed up every time
he gets a chance over last year, in the preseason
this year, but Mri mathis is a tough one, right Steve,
because he did he had such a rough start with
the Broncos, you know, all those DPI penalties, but he
did show improvement year over year. It just wasn't enough
for him to make this team in a crowded cornerback room.
Speaker 3 (02:56):
Yeah, and the first year that he played, you know,
he had a rough start, but he came back and
played really well and we thought that his future was
going to be bright here. But yeah, as they started
started bringing on more and more corners, those quarterbacks were
making plays as well, and just you know, makes it
makes it to where it's a it's.
Speaker 1 (03:15):
A tough situation. I know it was.
Speaker 3 (03:16):
It was difficult on the coaches, but you know, we
do have the best corners. I think that, you know,
the best corners out of the group on the roster
un forced.
Speaker 1 (03:27):
And I really enjoyed interacting with Tomorrow.
Speaker 3 (03:30):
He's a very nice young man and uh, you know,
I definitely wish you wish him all the best, And.
Speaker 2 (03:35):
It seems like he's someone that maybe another team gives
a chance to.
Speaker 1 (03:38):
Oh yeah, oh yeah, I think so. For sure. You
just hope that you have done enough. And once again,
I go back to.
Speaker 4 (03:46):
My time in this league, and you you think that
you were just competing with the guys on your current
roster that you see in your locker room, Well, you know,
you competing with the other thirty one teams and the
guys at your position, because I can I can tell
you from from you know, doing some scouting stuff, that
teams are always looking You're looking at their roster. They're
(04:09):
constantly evaluating. In the case of the MARII were you
getting better? Were the scouts and the coaches seeing you
get better as a player in comparison to another player
on someone else's roster with the same years.
Speaker 1 (04:24):
Of experience, because it gets to a point.
Speaker 4 (04:27):
Gentlemen in listeners, where once you get to that third
year in your league, they need to.
Speaker 1 (04:33):
Know are you Are we still.
Speaker 4 (04:34):
Looking at you as a backup special teams.
Speaker 1 (04:37):
Player or you a guy who can compete for a
starting job. Breaking news, not.
Speaker 5 (04:45):
A not a cut though the Las Vegas Raiders are
sending a fifth round pick to the or to the
Cleveland Browns. Yes for Kenny Pickett. Why can't Pickett now
a Las Vegas Raider?
Speaker 1 (04:59):
What well?
Speaker 4 (05:00):
See?
Speaker 1 (05:00):
I had a feeling full disclosure. By the way, just
a little programming.
Speaker 2 (05:04):
No anytime since it has cut down day, a lot
of action is happening. I told seekers anytime they're like
pay breaking news and us with the sounder will stop
over doing and react to whatever he gives us, So
go ahead.
Speaker 4 (05:15):
I thought I was mistaken, but I knew that was
going to happen because Kenny Pickett didn't play a lot
in any of the preseason games because he got injured
in training camp, and the Browns were kind of looking
and trying to figure out what they were going to do,
(05:36):
and the conversation the entire time was about Shador and
Dylan Gabriel, and I was like, no, no, no, no, the
conversation is not about those two. It's about Flacco and
Kenny Pickett. So with Flacco playing against the Rams, and
I know the Browns said, oh, we're going to keep
four guys on a roster at the quarterback position, they
had to move someone and unfortunately is Kenny Picket, or
(06:00):
fortunately it is Knny Pickett.
Speaker 2 (06:03):
Yeah, and you know they saw you saw him take
out took out Shador Sanders to put Snoopontle in for
that drill and then cut him immediately after.
Speaker 4 (06:12):
Yeah, we don't get into that because I'm going to
have a nice little rant about that.
Speaker 3 (06:18):
But honestly, good saying stuff about that. We would get
to it, we'll get.
Speaker 2 (06:23):
But good news for Kenny Pickett, I would think, you know,
ad and O'Connell goes down with the Las Vegas Raiders.
I mean, he's one more injury away from getting another
chance to.
Speaker 1 (06:31):
Prove himself as a starter in this league.
Speaker 2 (06:33):
I don't know if he will be a starter in
this league ever again, but you know he's got another
shot at least.
Speaker 4 (06:38):
Well for him, this is great, not just because you
get an opportunity because another guy get injured. That's part
of the course's that's the game itself.
Speaker 1 (06:46):
But the fact that.
Speaker 4 (06:48):
You're there with Chip Kelly, you're there with Pete Carroll,
and look at what Pete Carroll was able to do
with Gino to get Gino.
Speaker 1 (06:56):
In this particular position.
Speaker 4 (06:57):
So if you're Kenny Pickett, man, you're thinking you're heavily
you know football guys, I mean you're doing everything you're doing. Hell,
Mary's I am out of the chaos, which is the
Cleveland brother out.
Speaker 1 (07:10):
What everybody says. Everybody says that about Cleveland. Is it
that bad?
Speaker 4 (07:14):
What?
Speaker 1 (07:15):
Man?
Speaker 4 (07:16):
This is like you go inside a contract with Cleveland,
and I know Miles garretted it because he said he
wanted out.
Speaker 1 (07:22):
He just wanted more money.
Speaker 4 (07:24):
Man, Man, that's like being held hassast. I mean he
said that he wanted out, but he just wanted more money.
Speaker 3 (07:34):
No, they weren't going to let him out, and he
had to take the Well, he had.
Speaker 4 (07:38):
An opportunity to to to just kind of do the
same thing Trey Henderson did today and said, you know what.
Speaker 1 (07:44):
I'm not playing trade me, I'll holding He.
Speaker 4 (07:47):
Had the opportunity to do that, but he wanted to
stay in Cleveland, which as it comes, the words come
out of my mouth.
Speaker 1 (07:55):
My brain still trying to cross it, like I don't
know what the hell he was thinking about while he
was thinking about getting paid, and that he did.
Speaker 2 (08:02):
And speaking of Trey Hendrickson also reworked his deal today
he's getting.
Speaker 1 (08:07):
It is with good. He didn't he didn't need more money. Well, Steve,
you you could always reason. I don't think that was
the reason. What do you think the reason was that,
like he had to.
Speaker 4 (08:23):
No, the reason he felt that he had to because
he's like, hey, man, if I'm going be in his
hell hole called Cleveland, I get paid, right Think Think
about Trey Hendrickson. Trey Hendrickson wanted to get paid, and
rightfully so he balled out and for one of the
cheapest organizations in the NFL to say, no, we're not
(08:44):
going to do that. Okay, yeah, I'll ask for Trey,
I will sit out, and then I'll hold in and
at some point before we get to the first game
of the regular season, give me more money.
Speaker 3 (08:55):
It's a different situation though, because they acted like they
didn't want, like he wasn't valuable, whereas with the Browns.
Speaker 1 (09:03):
They always valued.
Speaker 2 (09:06):
They did come out and say like, we want Miles
Garrett to be a Brown until he's in Canton and
the Hall of Fame.
Speaker 6 (09:12):
Yes, well, see what I've learned, people say a lot
of things. That's when the deal is, I like you, well,
how much did you really like me?
Speaker 1 (09:23):
Right?
Speaker 4 (09:23):
So if Miles was just like, look, you really like me,
don't just tell me, don't say that for the fan
basical because you don't want them to get upset. And
of course I mean Andrew Berry and then Haslam would
say that because Miles Garrett was the best player still
is the best player in the organization.
Speaker 1 (09:39):
Could you imagine? Could you imagine for that? It's exactly.
Speaker 4 (09:43):
It's notice like, let's put in your years. It's like
when John Elway was at the height of his career.
John always saying I want to be here, I want
to go somewhere else.
Speaker 1 (09:51):
Right, you don't want that to happen? Yeah, right, So this.
Speaker 4 (09:55):
Is why Trey Henderson good on him. Cheap asss Sinnati Bengals.
Speaker 5 (10:05):
Another trade the Vikings, that's one between the Vikings and
Courts in Minnesota. Vikings are acquiring a sixth round pick
in the upcoming draft and they need Apolis. Colts are
receiving depth cornerback Mackay Blackman in returch.
Speaker 1 (10:19):
Makai Blackman was expected to.
Speaker 5 (10:20):
Have a I think a roll in the dime package
for the Vikings this year.
Speaker 1 (10:24):
So kind of significant, kind of significant.
Speaker 4 (10:27):
Well it's you know what, it's significant for the Colts
who figures though, well, they added more depth in their
secondary for Brian Flores.
Speaker 1 (10:35):
It was just like, you know what, this is the
reason that you create depth.
Speaker 4 (10:39):
You draft guys and you've developed them so now they
become trade pieces later on.
Speaker 2 (10:45):
Yeah, and it still feels kind of like the Damari
Mathis thing here. Unlike the Colts who got a trade.
We didn't get a trade, but it's someone that developed
in their organization and then they can get a piece
for him. We've seen the Broncos do this numerous times,
getting six and seventh round draft picks or the fourth
and seventh rounder for Valette.
Speaker 1 (11:04):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (11:05):
Well, you don't hear something that's interesting when it was
Analysia trade.
Speaker 1 (11:10):
First it was Terry mclaurink got his deal, big news today.
Speaker 4 (11:14):
Then it was Trey Henderson got his deal. No, Michael
Parson and I can help, but think about Nick Benito, right,
would he be one of those guys to get a
long term deal or would he do the same thing
like a Trey Hendrickson.
Speaker 1 (11:29):
See, I think I think he waits.
Speaker 2 (11:31):
I think he waits until the Micah Parsons deal gets
done and then maybe into next offseason and just raise
his dollars per year even more because the average is
going to go up. So if they do hit him,
you know with the franchise tag, that's going to be
more money for him regardless. But if he has another
huge year, he's going to be paid like these guys
(11:51):
like Miles Garrett and Micah Parsons. And I have to
ask you guys this because I thought this was just
such a bad look for the Cowboys, and it seems
like everything has been recently, but Micah Parson's laying on
the training table during the preseason game, eating as nachos
and cheese on the way into this radio.
Speaker 1 (12:10):
How would you guys react to that as a teammate.
Speaker 2 (12:12):
Is it more just like, hey, this is a professional
business and he's just doing his part to hold out
until he gets the money he deserves.
Speaker 1 (12:19):
Or are you like, hey, man, this makes all of
us look bad.
Speaker 3 (12:22):
Well Vision has showed it because it makes makes them
kind of look bad, I think, but.
Speaker 1 (12:28):
Those players do. I remember, we've seen hot dogs on
the sideline video you know, second half preseason. You know
you're not playing Yeah, hot dogs.
Speaker 2 (12:43):
Man, Or that video of Chad Johnson asking the guy
for a hot dog from the crowd. Here's some money,
go get me a hot dog from the concession stand. Yeah.
Speaker 4 (12:54):
I think it all depends on the organization that you
were part of, because Mike is part of the Cowboys
organization and Jerry being the owner and the de facto
of GM. We've seen this movie several times. He did
it with Emmett, he did it with Dak, he did
it with a CD Lamb. So I mean, Michael was like, Okay,
(13:16):
this is the way we're gonna play it. I'm gonna
play it the same way. It doesn't really mean anything
to you. I'm just gonna lounge here and I'm gonna
do it so everyone can actually see it. Because I
personally don't think that Jerry Jones is in the football
business to win.
Speaker 1 (13:34):
I really don't think so.
Speaker 4 (13:36):
I think he's in the business of increasing his brand
because just think about what happened you got the Michael
Parsons situation taking place at the same time this whole
thing about the America's team takes place on Netflix.
Speaker 1 (13:49):
Have you been watching it? I haven't watched it. It's
a pretty freaking good document.
Speaker 2 (13:54):
I didn't know that the Emmett Smith thing dragged on
until into week three of the regular season back in
the nineties. I was young at that time. I had
completely forgotten that part of the story.
Speaker 1 (14:04):
So maybe that is just it's history. Ida is once again,
this is Jerry is big on branding. We can think
about it.
Speaker 4 (14:16):
We talk about the Cowboys, or at least on the
full of the network, they are constantly talking about a
team that hasn't been relevant in thirty years, but they
get more publicity than anyone in the business.
Speaker 1 (14:27):
Why well, I.
Speaker 3 (14:28):
Think one of the reasons why is because many times
when people associate with the team, they keep that association
through thick and thin because they always most of the time,
the time the team's gonna have is day, you know, right,
eventually around I'm going back around eventually. And I think
(14:48):
this is just the way fans are these days. They're
and I do have to fly by night. Fans who
you know, one year. Oh I got the chiefs issue now.
Speaker 4 (14:59):
But you know what this what it comes down for
me where I grew up, it was don't talk about it,
be about it. As a member of the Denver Broncos
in my five years, no one had to do self
promoting for mister B from Jake Plummer to Mike Shanahan.
Speaker 1 (15:16):
It was what it was, and that's how the fan
base thought of it.
Speaker 4 (15:20):
But then if you're a Cowboys fan, oh, it's all
about self promotion all day, every day.
Speaker 2 (15:26):
Well, Jerry even says in the documentary, he said, I
want this to be a soap opera three and sixty
five days a year.
Speaker 3 (15:33):
To be honest, football, in my opinion, has always been
also in addition to a great sport, from entertainment.
Speaker 1 (15:42):
Yeah, entertainment, bro. My wife calls it reality TV for men. Yeah.
Speaker 4 (15:49):
Oh, now, I guess in this one there is no
flowers being but it is that particular way. But once again,
that goes back at to certain franchises.
Speaker 1 (16:03):
Being a member of the different Broncos, we didn't have
that drama it was.
Speaker 4 (16:07):
It wasn't about creating a soap Ober. It was about
winning the Pittsburgh Steelers. That wasn't the case. The Green
Bay Packers wasn't the case. The reason I mentioned those
clubs because those team travels, they have great fan bases,
and it's always about winning. With Jerry, I question that
is it about winning or is it about how much
(16:27):
money my team is valued at? Because when you look
at the Cowboys, they're one of the more value sporting
teams out there.
Speaker 3 (16:36):
But I would think that if he felt that way,
he would pay Mica Parcels, right though not really you
think about it, like you said, you.
Speaker 1 (16:43):
Want Parcels on your team? Take away from the value.
It definitely will.
Speaker 4 (16:50):
But once again, well not having him on the team
is going to take away from you.
Speaker 1 (16:56):
So what Jerry is doing.
Speaker 4 (16:58):
Jerry is saying, Hey, this is like in a TV business,
it sweeps week right, and we want to make sure
everyone is constantly talking about us because.
Speaker 1 (17:06):
Like we said, you've seen it, I haven't.
Speaker 4 (17:08):
That's itxogab it with Jerry, Jones and Himmett went into
week three, But the deal got done. And as long
as we're talking about the Cowboys leading up to their
first game against Philly, their first game is against the
Vision Ride with the Super.
Speaker 1 (17:24):
Bowl champs Micah pas is not gonna be see how
bold Jerry is.
Speaker 2 (17:29):
That's going to be a bold move for I'm mostly
if it pays off. But Micah will be there at
some point this year. Don't you think like the deal
is gonna get done this Mike? He said earlier, this
is notoriously what Jerry Jones does. He will be playing
at some point.
Speaker 1 (17:41):
Oh yeah yeah. If not, he'll be lying on a table.
He not jos again, just as long as he's not
flipping those tables over like I don't want to know.
Speaker 2 (17:50):
But speaking of you mentioned Mike Shanahan earlier, Happy belated Bert, Yes, sure,
and it made me think, you know, you said you
didn't have that drama around your teams when you played
with the Broncos. How much of that has to do
with ownership and how much of that has to do
with the head coach.
Speaker 1 (18:08):
I think it has a.
Speaker 3 (18:09):
Lot to do with both and the owners who are present,
because there are some owners in the team who the
players don't even know who the owners are.
Speaker 1 (18:18):
Basically, you know they know who.
Speaker 2 (18:20):
They are, but they know they.
Speaker 3 (18:22):
Don't know the face and then it's all on the coach.
But when you have present ownership, most of the time
the players, and especially if the coach and the owner
has a good relationship and they communicate well, they both
have they share visions of the type of people that
they want to have in their organization, not only on
the football field, but on the staff, you know, uh,
(18:44):
you know, just throughout the organization.
Speaker 1 (18:46):
And the one thing I loved.
Speaker 4 (18:47):
About my time here with mister B and Mike Shanahan,
mister B was one of those hands on owners. He
didn't sit in and standing in the ivory tower overlooking
the Pactas field.
Speaker 1 (18:58):
He was on the field. He wanted to know what
was going on.
Speaker 4 (19:01):
A guy got injured, he wants to know because once again,
you're part of his team, you're part of his company.
And just walking around and I'll say this, most CEOs
of companies, you really don't know who these individuals are.
Speaker 1 (19:16):
Their names are on your check, but she don't see them.
Speaker 4 (19:19):
Mister B's in the dining hall when I went to
lyft waist after practice, guess who's on his treadmill with
his elbow pads.
Speaker 1 (19:27):
It's mister B getting his fat on.
Speaker 3 (19:29):
And the beautiful thing about we see that same thing
happening with the Walton Penners ownership group.
Speaker 1 (19:34):
Yes, they're always there and accessible.
Speaker 4 (19:37):
Yes, and that's that's the great thing that I'm glad
they kept that trend going because seeing Carrie Wan Penner
and Great Penner at practice, to me, that brings a
smile to my face because they air boosts.
Speaker 1 (19:48):
On the ground and the players, I know the players
appreciate it. Yeah, No, of course absolutely.
Speaker 2 (19:53):
And the alumni now that are you know, invited back
to practice? And how lucky are we in Broncos Country
that that that's the ownership group we got because we
can see how mad it is in other places. We'll
get you out back up to date on all the
cuts for the Broncos today as they're cutting down their
roster to their initial fifty three man roster.
Speaker 1 (20:10):
Steve Atwater and Studio.
Speaker 2 (20:12):
Alongside Nick Ferguson, I'm Grant Smith. We'll be right back
on Broncos Country Night on Kawa A fifty am, ninety
four to one FM. Nick Ferguson and if you want
to join in on the conversation five six six nine
zero the Common Spirit Health text line. We'll get you
(20:32):
all caught up on the Broncos cuts so far today
and yesterday They've had Andrew Farmer, Walking Davis, Micah Abraham,
Joshua Pickett, Clay Webb, Xavier Trust, Michael dwumfour, Garrett Nelson,
Jerwan Newton, Odric Estime, Demari Matthis and Blake Watson all
cuts so far from the Broncos. Blake Watson is getting
(20:53):
that injury settlement cut so he will get some game checks.
He had that tough injury in the final preseason game
against the Saints on Saturday.
Speaker 1 (21:02):
Did you guys say what happened? This looks like PCL
injury is what I've heard.
Speaker 3 (21:06):
I don't know. Kevin looks like he had gett caught
up with the turf, but I think it was maybe
a little bit more than that.
Speaker 2 (21:12):
Yeah, from what I've heard, it's a PCL injury, So
I don't know how long that keeps him out, but
obviously he's not going to be on the initial fifty
three man.
Speaker 1 (21:20):
Yeah. Well, the one thing that's it's never let me
back in for a second.
Speaker 4 (21:24):
It's never great to see a guy get injured, but
at least there is somewhat of an injury settlement because
we know that the preseason salaries are not equivalent.
Speaker 1 (21:35):
No close equivalent to what the regular season salary is.
Speaker 4 (21:38):
So I'll say for the I guess the beginning part
of this, Blake Watson a man get healthy, but at
least you have a little something to tie you over
into you or able to get.
Speaker 1 (21:47):
Back on the field.
Speaker 2 (21:48):
So another running back Audric estimate, and obviously Blake Watson,
who we are just talking about. Do you think Blake
would have been on the on the fifty three man roster?
I mean, this running back room is deep. We still
have Jalil Tyler Baday, of course, JK. Dobbins and R. J. Harvey.
Would he have made the fifty three men roster, you
know with if he wouldn't have got injured on Saturday?
Speaker 3 (22:09):
Yeah, you know, you know, I'm not sure because we knew.
We knew that JK. Dobbins and R. J. Harvey, we
knew they were coss And then I just feel.
Speaker 1 (22:20):
Like Sean Payton loves Jalil mcgloth. I do too. Everything
I hear about that guy, like I'm a fan. Yeah,
he's he's there early. He you know, he works hard
every single play.
Speaker 3 (22:31):
You have no question that he's given one hundred percent
every single play in practice, in the games, the whole
nine yards. Uh So that's the guy you usually got
to keep on your team. And the question was going
to be who's going to be the fourth one, right,
and Tyler Tyler beday Man, he showed up.
Speaker 1 (22:51):
He didn't have any injuries and he played well.
Speaker 3 (22:54):
Now I thought it would be maybe close between he
and Audrey and Blake, but as as it went on,
Blake with the injury that that kind of that.
Speaker 1 (23:06):
Definitely hurt him.
Speaker 3 (23:07):
Yeah, and then uh, Odrick, I saw he was getting
the late reps and I was like, oh, that's not
just not a good sign.
Speaker 2 (23:14):
That reminds you of Alberto a couple of years ago.
And they were kind of showcasing him in the last
game to see if maybe they could get someone to
trade for him. But obviously he's been released and that's
not official yet, so I guess we could still see
he's gonna get picked up by somebody. Yeah, you don't
think he makes it back to the practice.
Speaker 3 (23:28):
Squad, No, No, I think he's I think somebody's gonna
pick him up.
Speaker 4 (23:32):
See. I always thought that the first two guys, Dobbins
and Harvey, they were cool. I always felt as though
Tyler ber Day he was also secure.
Speaker 1 (23:43):
The reason being is because remember back.
Speaker 4 (23:46):
Last season, well I guess this and this earlier this
year when Buffalo and Broncos play, I mean aldi guess
was a healthy scratch. Yeah, ty to Day was in
that game in a couple of plays, that's right. So
I feel as though Payton is really fond of him.
And it came down to Blake Watson Angeli because they're
kind of like the same type of back. And once
(24:09):
Blake got injured, that put him on the shelf and
that limited what he could do. And also when you
look at that that since not since that game, but
the Saints game, tellierbra Day was returning kicks.
Speaker 1 (24:20):
Yet they did a hell of a job doing it.
Speaker 3 (24:24):
And I think Sean Payton has a certain size of
running back that he likes.
Speaker 1 (24:30):
I don't think he really likes the bigger running back.
It seems that way right from the room. Well, well, see,
I wouldn't.
Speaker 3 (24:35):
Say that's bigger because you know, I would say both R. J.
Harvey and JK there they're thick.
Speaker 1 (24:43):
But yeah they're not. They're not like six to one,
you know, six.
Speaker 4 (24:46):
So when we say they don't like, okay, when we
we say big, it's not just you know, sometimes what
they're running books, backs are short and they're thick. When
you think about Deuce McAllister large back, Olatavious Murray, large back,
marking large.
Speaker 1 (25:03):
Man, Yeah he did. Oh yeah, yeah he was even
stick though. Well, I guess you're right, Steve.
Speaker 4 (25:11):
Sean Payton has a type of guy that he wants
to add the position. And the reason why I can
say that with certainty is because Sean Payton comes from
the Bill Parcells school of coaching and scouting, and each
physician has a certain body type, a certain body type,
(25:31):
and he's bought into that body type. So he's looking
for certain guys. Like when I looked at this roster
in the offseason and say, okay, well what was Sean
Payton going to add to this offense? My first thought was, well, Nick,
go take a look at the New Orleans Saints deb
trot look at the roster when he with Sean Payton
was there, and you can just kind of look at
(25:52):
body types that were on that roster and say, well,
who on the Broncos current offensive roster fits that prototype?
And that helps figure things out. That's why when you
think about Devon Baylay and the fact of he was
being he's traded to a Saint team that they were
used to having bigger body wide receivers, but they did right,
(26:12):
so they needed a guy, which now was like, that's
why the relationship between Sean Payton and Mickey loomis woked out.
So now you sending Devon Blay hopefully to a great spot.
Then they're not gonna win a lot of games, not
that year at least, right, But no, they're not gonna
win a lot of.
Speaker 1 (26:28):
Games this year.
Speaker 4 (26:28):
But if you won a fantasy sleeper as a guy
who's gonna catch a lot of passes, Von.
Speaker 2 (26:33):
Bingle, he was one of my fantasy sleepers last year
for the Broncos. Nobody knew who the hell he was,
and I was like, he's scoring a touchdown every other game.
Speaker 1 (26:39):
There you go.
Speaker 2 (26:40):
Another element though, that I think that helped out Tyler
Badet and making this roster is just his ability to
catch the ball out of the backfield.
Speaker 7 (26:47):
Yeah, Nixon, the pocket starts to break down, steps up,
finds a receiver.
Speaker 1 (26:50):
This is going to be a first down for the Broncos.
Speaker 8 (26:52):
Good job by Bowe Nix's he was able to find
Tyler fade in the left flat, just as he apparently
was going to be take it down in the game
of sixteen on a third down. We'll give the Broncos
a first down, now the Saints sixteen.
Speaker 2 (27:08):
Let's talk about that preseason game, the finale in New
Orleans this past weekend. A lot of chatter about the
Broncos first team offense and their struggles or lack of production,
I guess, and the two preseason games that they really played.
How are you guys feeling about the Broncos offense heading
into year two with Sean Payton and bow Knicks.
Speaker 3 (27:28):
I feel really good about him because about the offense
because I got a chance to see them in training
camp and saw them up against the Arizona Cardinals and
who was the other team that was here? Forty nine
is yes, and so I got a chance to see firsthand, Hey,
(27:49):
we got what it takes to win. And Sean Payton
was he wasn't going to show very much in those
preseason games anyway.
Speaker 1 (27:56):
He didn't even did he even call the plays? Did
he call plays in the last game? No, I know
Davis Webb was calling him in the second game. Yeah, Well,
he had that waffle house figure in his face I said, Sam,
I am on it. Did you see that?
Speaker 3 (28:10):
So?
Speaker 2 (28:10):
I think was that just like place that Sam Ellinger likes?
Do you think that's what that little code word was
or was he just trying to get in the mindset.
Speaker 4 (28:17):
Of a quarterly Honest, we did see on a Thursday
night football game where the Broncos was playing against the.
Speaker 1 (28:22):
Chargers it said run the football, so it might have
been a reminder.
Speaker 2 (28:27):
That reminder didn't work as well though, No I didn't,
But I will say Sam Ellinger he looked pretty good.
Speaker 4 (28:32):
I mean, yeah, Sam was a hell of a college
quarterback to Texas, Yes he was.
Speaker 1 (28:36):
But I mean, for me, my whole.
Speaker 4 (28:38):
Thing was that you keep an extra quarterback on your
roster that will rob you of an extra wide receiver
or another skilled position.
Speaker 1 (28:46):
And it sucks to say this, but I say, no,
So do.
Speaker 2 (28:50):
You think that's someone instead of cutting, they try to
make a trade with someone. I mean, we obviously saw
the Raiders already fill their backup quarterback needs, but definitely
thank he's someone that they could get a late round
pick for.
Speaker 3 (29:02):
Oh yeah, I think so, especially the way that he played,
you know, the opportunities that that Sean gave him to
play and he delivered. He delivered, and the guys, you know,
the offensive line block well, the guys were catching passes.
Speaker 1 (29:17):
Uh, and so that definitely helped his stock.
Speaker 3 (29:19):
Sometimes a quarterback and be in a situation where everybody
else is doing their job and it makes the quarterback
look bad too.
Speaker 1 (29:26):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (29:26):
Maybe like interesting that you see that wherever I've seen
that before. I don't know, Maybe I'm just making it up,
but you know, all those things are key and important.
Sam went out there and did what he needed to do.
Hopefully you can make this roster. But but listen to
the interview after the game. It is not like he's
(29:46):
going to be here. Yeah, because did you see the
interview that he did?
Speaker 1 (29:50):
Now I did.
Speaker 4 (29:51):
But once once again, you never know what's gonna happen
with the decision is going to be made upstairs. The
only thing you can do is go out there and
play your game. I hope that you land on the roster.
Speaker 2 (29:59):
That's let's continue this on the other side those country tonight.
I'm Grant Smith filling in for Benjamin Albright alongside the
aforementioned Steve Atwater, the Hall of Famer and Nick Ferguson.
Speaker 1 (30:14):
Welcome back to it talking about the Broncos.
Speaker 2 (30:16):
Cut down to fifty three man roster and man, his
sounds like we got another one.
Speaker 5 (30:25):
Wide receiver Kyrie Rowand next up as he has been released,
he had the touchdown reception in the the streets and
precas again.
Speaker 2 (30:33):
Yeah, speedster looked like he was maybe just a little
too raw but heavy, heavy wide receiver room for the
Broncos this year.
Speaker 1 (30:40):
This is how his.
Speaker 2 (30:41):
Touchdown, maybe his last touchdown ever in a Broncos uniform.
Speaker 1 (30:44):
Sent it on Saturday against the Saints.
Speaker 7 (30:47):
Sam Ellinger Piro wets away from pressure, rollsw he's right
in trouble, gives ground, he's back past the twenty yard line,
throws a jump.
Speaker 1 (30:53):
Ball to the ends on his pot for a Denver touchdown.
That is rolling. What's the catch?
Speaker 8 (30:59):
I'm not sure how all that ball sort of maneuvered
through the air into a host of bodies and Kyries
Rowland came down with it.
Speaker 2 (31:10):
Yeah, so kyriees rowing the latest cut from the Denver Broncos.
Speaker 1 (31:14):
I mean, this is just such a brutal time of year.
Speaker 4 (31:17):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (31:17):
In the NFL, Kary he.
Speaker 3 (31:18):
Was a talented young receiver and I think maybe in
if we weren't as loaded, he could have had a
chance to make the team or possibly to practice squad,
but man, we're so loaded, and he made me still
may be able to come back for the practice squad,
who knows.
Speaker 2 (31:35):
But I mean, this is a great problem to have, right,
I mean from years past for the Broncos, where we were,
you know, looking on cut down day, like who could
we add to our roster that's getting cut from another team.
Now we're that team that other teams are looking at
and saying, hey, Bronco's got a lot of good players
in that wide receiver room or in that cornerback room
or in that running back room, maybe we can poach
one of these guys for our roster.
Speaker 3 (31:55):
And watching Kyrie's run and everything, the way that he worked,
he reminded me a little bit of Jelil McLoughlin.
Speaker 1 (32:02):
With his speed and you know, his build and all
of his talents.
Speaker 3 (32:07):
So, you know, good luck to him. I hope he
hope he makes it somewhere else or is back on
the practice squad.
Speaker 4 (32:12):
You know, here's what I'll say, guys, this is a
great situation to have.
Speaker 1 (32:17):
If you're the Denver Broncos. You're absolutely right.
Speaker 4 (32:20):
In years past, you haven't been able to say that
when you go through your roster.
Speaker 1 (32:26):
Up and down.
Speaker 4 (32:26):
Right now we're talking about wide receivers that you can say, oh,
we'll OK losing guys because we've developed by other guys.
And for me, that goes back to I mean you
give credit to the coaching.
Speaker 1 (32:35):
Staff and being able.
Speaker 4 (32:38):
To carry covert wide receiver coach coaching those guys. Well,
for me, I'm going to talk about a group of
guys that normal if we don't even hear anything about,
we never really hear anything about but just one time
of the year, and that's the scouting staff, and we
only hear about George Peyton. George Payton is the one
that's leading the group, But there are a number of
(33:00):
college counts pro scouts who put a lot of work,
in a lot of hours in to evaluate these players,
not just on this roster, but on other rosters. So
I as a guy who you know, finally broke into
the league because someone believed in me. To me, there
was a coach or someone on a scouting staff that
did that for me. And I can honestly say, you know,
(33:23):
I got time put in, you know, dating back years
with George Payton, even though he wasn't He didn't make
decision on keeping me or not.
Speaker 1 (33:32):
It was someone else's decision.
Speaker 4 (33:34):
But he was still one of those individuals who constantly
talked to me as I was going through that process.
And usually scouts and coaches they have their own individual guys.
And this is the one thing I love about George
to me, he loves football and he wants to see
everyone succeed. Because if every player has that idea that
you have the ability to make a team, the door's
(33:55):
open for you. You're going to get the best and
you're going to get the best fifty three players on
a roster. So for me, I'm gonna get maa hau
salut to George Paton and that coach is that that
scouting staff who never gets any validation.
Speaker 3 (34:09):
Well, I don't know if they don't get any validation,
I know we all have a tremendous amount of respect
for for George and and and the team there.
Speaker 1 (34:20):
They they work extremely hard to bring in.
Speaker 3 (34:22):
The right players, and not only players who are talented,
but players who are good people at the culture. Yes,
and that's that's difficult, because hey, somebody can be a little,
you know, a little tricky Yeah, and then they get
in your locker room and they destroy your locker room.
Speaker 4 (34:39):
Uh.
Speaker 3 (34:40):
So I can say without question that he's done an
exceptional job of.
Speaker 1 (34:44):
Of bringing in uh not only good players.
Speaker 3 (34:47):
But but great people, and that those guys genuinely enjoy
playing with each other, uh their leaders, and that's the
kind of team that you can win with.
Speaker 1 (34:58):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (34:58):
Well, hopefully we see a lot of from the Broncos
and this regular season. Now the preseason is over, and Steve,
it's always great to bring great people in the studio
like you man.
Speaker 3 (35:07):
Thanks for the time you guys. I appreciate y'll Sally
being here with you to show.
Speaker 2 (35:12):
We'll be right back on Broncos. Got you to night
on KOA fifty am ninety four to one FM
