Speaker 1 (00:00):
This show is Broncos Country tonight.
Speaker 2 (00:01):
Normally here Benjamin Albright a lot of times Nick Ferguson,
but getting an early jump on the Labor Day weekend
for those fellas, certainly for Ben. I know Nick was
in Boulder last night. I was hoping to be there
but wasn't able to. Nonetheless, if you've been listening, you
caught Coach Prime as well as his son Shador who
had a Monster Knight, and Travis Hunter, so they we
(00:26):
brought you some of their sound.
Speaker 3 (00:27):
Now.
Speaker 2 (00:27):
CSU is headed to Austin tomorrow to kick things off
with the fourth rank Longhorns and Steve Sarkisian quinn Ewers
and a bunch of pros down there there, thirty two
point dogs, So we'll hear from them here in just
a little bit.
Speaker 1 (00:39):
But yesterday was a huge day in Broncos Country.
Speaker 2 (00:43):
In fact, Greg Penner when he talked with me one
on one, and if you caught that earlier, he called
it a monumental day, and I think he's right. The
Broncos built this brand new practice facility. I also got
to sit and talk with Demani Leach and that was
in the morning before practice, and then they held their
final practice. You know, with Labor Day, I've talked about
(01:03):
Ben getting some time off.
Speaker 1 (01:04):
The NFL forces.
Speaker 2 (01:06):
These players and coaches to leave the building and take
three days off unless you're playing in the opening game,
which this year features the Chiefs hosting the Ravens. That'll
be a really fun game with Lamar Jackson and the
Ravens going to Case trying to exact a little revenge.
But as we know, winning the opening game doesn't erase
playoff losses, just as the Broncos in twenty thirteen when
(01:30):
Peyton Manning threw seven tds against the Ravens. But again
the Ravens has won the Super Bowl the year before
and had that big playoff win. So we'll see that
game in Arrowhead on Thursday. So those teams for practicing
this weekend, and then the Eagles and Packers are going
to be in South Poll. It's a home game for
the Eagles. But the first NFL game in Brazil. We've
(01:51):
had games in Mexico, we've had preseason games in Japan,
certainly regular season games not only Mexico, but of course
England for a long, long long time and Germany.
Speaker 1 (01:59):
Now the last couple of years. But the first game
in South Polo.
Speaker 2 (02:02):
The Thursday night game is going to be the regular
Thursday Night or rather Sunday Night crew with Mike Turrico
and Chris collins Worth in the Thursday game in salth
Paulo is a peacock only, so be interested in see
you're not gonna fly to Rico and Chris down to Brazil.
I imagine that you'll have the likes of Jason Garrett
and Chris Simms, and maybe they'll they'll throw I don't
(02:22):
know who they'll throw.
Speaker 1 (02:23):
On play by play. In fact, I don't even want
to speculate.
Speaker 2 (02:25):
But anyway, let's not get bogged down and that we
we did have that groundbreaking yesterday. So I want to
bring you to domani leitch chat in a second. But
Mike mclinchy and JFM John Franklin Myers met the media
following practice and as you can imagine, McGlinchey, who's been
around the league for obviously a long time, he's going
(02:48):
into year six. Right, let's do the quick math. Eighteen
as a rookie, nineteen, twenty twenty one, twenty two, twenty three, sorry,
year seven, so he's got the first five years he
was there with the Niners. He went to a super
Bowl and I think went to the playoffs three of
the five years at least. But he's seen a bunch
(03:09):
of quarterbacks kind of come come into his locker room,
and none maybe have the success it certainly brought pretty yet,
but Trey Lance high draft pick, Jimmy g got them
to a super Bowl, and there were some other qbs
mixed in there, and then saw Russ last year and
now bow Nick. So this is our first chance to
talk to Mike, and that was since Bo had been
(03:29):
named starter.
Speaker 1 (03:30):
So the question to Mike here that I'm gonna play.
The answer for you.
Speaker 2 (03:36):
Is what has stood out about Bo that makes him
the obvious choice at starter? And I'm paraphrasing, but what
stood out from the Broncos first round pick.
Speaker 4 (03:48):
I don't know if it's a specific example, but it's
certainly the rapid improvement has been super impressive to me,
from you know, OTAs when he first got here in
May to where he's at now.
Speaker 1 (04:02):
He's a different football player, and.
Speaker 4 (04:05):
It's it's it's a great sense of who he is
as a pro, who he is as a as a
as a as a competitor. To learn that fast and
put himself in a position to lead our football team,
and everybody's excited for him to do that. There's been
so many examples of him showing composure and and his
(04:26):
collection in the huddle and his ability to stay calm
no matter the situation out there. And he was the
same on the practice field as he was the two
games that we've lined up so far, and I think
that that speaks to his composure as much as anything.
Is that nothing the moment isn't too big for him.
(04:46):
He's ready for it and he's ready to.
Speaker 1 (04:48):
Go attack it.
Speaker 2 (04:48):
And it's worth noting McGlinchey was a captain last year
and I wouldn't be surprised if he's a captain again
this year, along with Courtland Sutton who was a captain
last year.
Speaker 1 (04:58):
You know, Russell Wilson was a captain.
Speaker 2 (04:59):
I don't know if just make bo Nicks captain or
if he gets elected captain by his team. You don't
want to try to fool the locker room. So if
bo Nicks is worthy of being a captain, which I
know he has been plenty in his career, then there'll
be a captain with no Justin Simmons, no Kareem Jackson,
those guys have been captains.
Speaker 1 (05:17):
I had to have to think that the captains.
Speaker 2 (05:19):
On defense almost certainly are going to be leading tackler
Alex Singleton, who you're about to hear from, as well
as probably PS.
Speaker 1 (05:24):
Two just for being the best player.
Speaker 2 (05:26):
And so even though PS two is maybe not the
most vocal, he certainly leads by example and always does
everything right. Reminds me of all those years Champ Bailey.
Speaker 1 (05:35):
Was was a captain.
Speaker 2 (05:39):
In fact, maybe actually, you know what, there's some Champ
Bailey sound available because he was on CBS Sports being
very complimentary about PS two that we'll hear in a second.
But since we're with the bow Knicks theme, before we
hear my one on one with Demandi Leads, let's get
the what I think will be the captain of the defense,
certainly the quarterback, the guy that's calling the defensive plays.
But here's Alex Singleton's thought on bo Nicks now being
(06:02):
named starter and leading this team as they kick it
off here a week from Sunday in Seattle.
Speaker 5 (06:07):
Yeah, I mean he's like thirty already, so it is
we're in the same high school class. So no, it's
he is mature, and you know, I talked to him
a ton and just try to pick his brain about stuff,
how he sees things, and uh, he's you know, really
honest with himself with his game and then just how
he sees everything.
Speaker 3 (06:24):
You know.
Speaker 5 (06:25):
In the indie game, we were talking at halftime and
then he was going back in and I was like.
Speaker 1 (06:28):
Oh, how is it?
Speaker 5 (06:29):
And he was just like, man, you know, before the
play is way slower because the practice, you know, we
go pretty fast and all the stubs sass. But he's
like then you know, the ball staffed and it's like, oh,
all of a sudden faster and just but it didn't.
It wasn't like.
Speaker 3 (06:40):
Oh I can't do this.
Speaker 5 (06:40):
It was like, oh, I'm just realizing that's how it
is in games. Just college is so fast all the time,
it just kind of just never stops. But in the
NFL you get that forty seconds. So I think just
that was you know, just like, oh, you know, he's
getting it, and I think those are you know, a
lot of steps. I'm sure the offensive coaches have had
that all the time with him. Just when a guy
just gets it, he's gonna be your starter.
Speaker 2 (06:59):
And a guy who got it from the second he
was drafted by the Broncos and then walked into the
building which is now called Broncos part powered by Common
Spirit is Pat Sartain Junior and a guy who also
got it from the second he stepped into the league.
Speaker 1 (07:12):
And you know, it's funny scene what Travis Hunter is doing.
Speaker 2 (07:15):
Remember what Champ Bailey did when he was at Georgia
back in the days. A two way player and a
little bit of two way opportunities he got.
Speaker 1 (07:22):
I think more is Washington. I don't know if Mike
ever gave a.
Speaker 2 (07:25):
Chance here in Denver, but Champ Bailey Now the was
on Zach Gelb Show on CBS well formerly CBS Sports
Rio It's Infinity Sports Network now. So here is Champ
talking to Zach Gelb, who asked, who is the It
was a simple question, and I guess it wasn't who's
the best corner? It was what what is your opinion
(07:48):
of what you've seen so far? From now? Two time
All Pro in just three seasons PS two.
Speaker 6 (07:53):
Exactly what I expected. This kid is the best in
the game right now. When he came out of college,
I said he has a Pro Football Hall of Fame potential,
like that's the lofty goals I set for him, because
you look at his body, tight, his style of play.
A technician, plays hard, loves the game. It's everything that
you would want in a football player. Forget position, it's
(08:16):
a football player. He is that, and now he's an
elite corner. With the way he plays the game, there
is no doubt in my mind he'll continue to excel.
I expect him to go to as many Pro Bowls
as I did, be a first ballot Hall of Famer.
Speaker 1 (08:29):
All these things.
Speaker 6 (08:30):
All he has to do is stay healthy, and that's
the only thing that can get in his way because
when he plays, he's the best.
Speaker 3 (08:36):
Why do you put Pat over Sauce Gardner because that's
always a big debate on who's the best corner in
the league.
Speaker 6 (08:43):
Well, I just I'm watch him more closely, right, I
haven't watched a lot of Saft Gardner. He's very effective,
very good corner. Love his game. I mean, he's in
my top three for sure. But it's just something about
Pat's game. I sort of I might get a little
biased there, you know, being they used to done in
that Bronco helmet. But this guy is bar none the best,
(09:05):
and you can make an argument for sauce and no
doubt about it, but I think Pat steels at the top.
Speaker 1 (09:10):
The show is Broncos Country tonight.
Speaker 2 (09:12):
I am Brandon christallin for Benjamin Albright and often Nick
Ferguson by his side. So we'll shift gears from what
the Broncos doing on the field to off the field.
I mentioned and if you caught it earlier, I talked
to Greg Penner one on one. I'll talk to Demani
Leach on the day they broke ground on the.
Speaker 1 (09:27):
New training facility.
Speaker 2 (09:28):
The new buildings in to be one hundred and seventy
five million dollars, so they broke ground on that today.
It's supposed to be done in two years. And it
was funny too because as they broke grinning, the other
pictures got the hard hats, he got the shovels. So
I had a little fun and I have to have
to play the question instead of jumping straight to Demani's answer.
(09:49):
But here's Bronco's team president Demani Leach joining me earlier
after they did the groundbreaking ceremony. Demani, groundbreakings are exciting
and I saw you once you got your hard hat on,
you have the shovel.
Speaker 1 (10:02):
Are you ready to.
Speaker 2 (10:02):
Just start out here every day and get your hands dirty.
I guess you'll be doing a lot of construction.
Speaker 7 (10:06):
You gonna be that hands on will We want this
thing to be state of the art, built really well,
So no, I will now have my hand in the dirt.
That would be incredibly dangerous, So no, I won't be
doing that. But this today was my first ever groundbreaking,
so that was exciting. I got my eye on those shovels,
making sure they don't walk away. I want to make
sure I get one in my office.
Speaker 1 (10:26):
But no, today was really special.
Speaker 2 (10:28):
Well, and I know it's the culmination of a lot
of work. When you took the job two years ago,
right after the Walton Penner family ownership group took over
the team, you guys toured a number of practice facilities
as well as stadiums, And so how excited are you
that this project is happening as quickly as it is
after seeing that because they've put so much money into.
Speaker 1 (10:49):
This over the years.
Speaker 2 (10:51):
This facility, well, it may not be as new and
shiny as some of the other ones, is still more
than acceptable by league standards.
Speaker 7 (10:57):
Yeah, I sort of liken it to a house and
this is a it's a thirty plus year old house.
It has treated our family really really well. But our
family has grown. I think the way people live is different,
and so we could have continued to you know, renovate, renovate,
try to expand here or there, but we were definitely
stressing the bones of the facility. And you know, fortunately
(11:19):
we had you know, great resources from our ownership group
and a desire to really have the best and best
doesn't mean biggest. I think that was one of the
things that we toured around. It was we don't necessarily
want to have the biggest of everything. We want to
have the best and what's best for us and best
for our players and our staff. And it's exciting to
see it come to fruition. Now all of those things
that we ideated on and took notes on and began
(11:40):
to design, now we're going to start seeing get built.
Speaker 2 (11:43):
And because this is the construction project that is now
you can check that box. You can check the uniforms
and we'll get to that in a second. I asked
you in the press conference, but also i'll ask again,
stadium is going to continue to be something fans talk about.
Do you get a lot of feedback on that. Now
that they've gotten a new uniforms they may not have
been clamoring for a new practice facility, but excited to
(12:03):
see it and see the new team store. But our
fans asking you about the stadium more than maybe they were.
Speaker 7 (12:09):
Yeah, well, I guess two things. One I would say
I wouldn't say we've checked the box on the training facility.
It's going to be a long, slow, year and a
half long check. We'll check it when we get to
training camp in twenty twenty six. But yeah, I mean,
I wouldn't say there's been more, you know, questions about
the stadium. I think that was I think in my
opening press conference, the first two questions I got were
about the stadium in uniforms. So and it's continued to
(12:31):
be something and I understand, you know, I think they
all see what's happening around the league, whether it's you know,
new facilities or major renovations. We're aware of it as well.
We understand the length of our lease. And I think
what's what's great is that our ownership group was willing
to put in one hundred million in the end of
the facility knowing that we have a limited amount of
time left on our lease and didn't feel like that
(12:53):
was going to box us out of any particular pathway
moving forward.
Speaker 2 (12:57):
But when you look at the events that say they
have in in Arlington beyond just obviously Cowboys football, or
some in Minnesota, certainly in Vegas with the Raiders new stadium,
and in La obviously with what they do at so far,
is that part of I guess the potential enthusiasm of
what a new building might bring is all of these
other events beyond having a brand new, amazing football stadium
(13:18):
for your football team.
Speaker 7 (13:19):
We definitely hear that from fans, and I understand it.
From fans. There's the excitement of oh, Super Bowls and
Final Fours and all of those things, and those things
are they're great for cities and communities socially and economically.
Speaker 1 (13:33):
All of that we certainly understand.
Speaker 2 (13:34):
And here, what about the buzz around the team? Right
It's been different buzz every year was Russell Wilson and
Nathaniel Hackett getting together and having Ruskim and then last
year at Sean Payton, now with bo Nix coming in, Yeah,
I imagine can you feel the excitement right this?
Speaker 1 (13:49):
I can?
Speaker 7 (13:50):
I can't a lot of it's coming from you guys,
but you're right. I think I started here right, you know,
in August of twenty twenty two, and it was it
was all of the RUSS buzz and hack it and
a lot of excitement, and I think that's, you know what.
I think we're pretty fortunate.
Speaker 3 (14:05):
You know.
Speaker 7 (14:06):
You know from my league experience, I know all thirty
two teams and their markets are not created equal. Our
fan base here is tremendous. I think the media coverage
that we get is phenomenal. We've been to other clubs
where there's a lot less media coverage, and ours is
pretty special. So it's when you stop talk talking about
us that I get worried.
Speaker 2 (14:23):
Broncos president de Money leach with us just for another
couple of seconds, I mentioned bon Nicks. The easiest way
to see his popularity rise is to look at jersey sales.
They saw where fanatics said they that he was That
jersey was the second selling, second best selling jersey a
couple of weeks ago, just behind Bears rookie Kalab Williams.
Speaker 1 (14:40):
And we get that.
Speaker 2 (14:41):
But so I imagine with the new jerseys, you're able
to kind of track in the new uniform, the excitement
not just for bon Nicks, but what you guys have
unveiled with that new uniform.
Speaker 6 (14:50):
Yep.
Speaker 7 (14:50):
So this the first quarter, you know, released till the
start of training camp. Roughly, I think we were three
x what we did last year in Jersey sales. No,
some of the that is because it's new uniforms, but
I think it's also a lot of excitement about the
quarterback and the other players we have on the roster.
Speaker 1 (15:06):
So it's great to see. But yes, oh we do.
We track it pretty religiously.
Speaker 7 (15:10):
We'll get into the regular season here and we'll start tracking,
you know, just as we do across all of our games.
We track, you know, food and beverage sales, We track
retail sales. What are the top selling items? What people
probably don't realize the number one selling item, Do you
know what it is? It's the big phone gold chain,
the foam goal Foam gold chains are the number one
(15:31):
selling items for us.
Speaker 2 (15:31):
Everybody loves them and the cost to make those versus
the cost of selling them. And there's only like one
or two companies that I think are are manufacturer.
Speaker 1 (15:39):
So you talk about stumbling in there, they are doing well.
Speaker 7 (15:43):
They are doing well, you see them all around the league,
but for us, they do really well.
Speaker 2 (15:46):
And then the final thing I have for you again
team president of Money leach you with us here on Kawa.
Speaker 1 (15:50):
Is about just the fact that football is here.
Speaker 2 (15:52):
You kind of get an appetizer with preseason games, packers
coming to town. I think in bo Nicks excitement helps
the attendance, not the sales, but the attendance. But now
knowing that, hey, these games count for real and we
want to see that all the hard work that the
players and coaches that put in will come to fruition
on the field.
Speaker 1 (16:08):
Oh yeah.
Speaker 7 (16:08):
We talk about all the time, sort of the emotional
shift on the business side of the year. And you know,
the off season, the early offseason is all about hope,
and then you know, you get through the draft and
free agency and your team starts to come together. Then
it turns into optimism. And then as you get into preseason,
then it becomes anxiety in a positive way. But people
are really we are, but I think everybody is anxious
(16:29):
for football to start. Regular season football to start. I'm
excited and anxious for it. I can't wait to get
to Seattle.
Speaker 2 (16:35):
Well, Demani, thanks so much for the time. As your
longtime partner for more than fifty years. KOA is certainly
excited about the start football season as well. Yeah, we
appreciate Them'll see in Seattle.
Speaker 1 (16:43):
Awesome to see you there. Well, I kind of ran
out of time.
Speaker 2 (16:45):
I was gonna get you some Jay Norvell and Braiden
Nicolosi sound but always going to talk to Demani Leech.
We will get into some college football though, because Peter
Burns is going to join me from SEC Network and
ESPN Radio.
Speaker 1 (16:57):
And Serious XM Radio.
Speaker 2 (16:59):
So being the busy college football slate, they're coming up
here next, so don't go anywhere in for Benjamin Albright,
I am Brandon Christall. This is KOA Colorado eight fifty
AM and ninety four to one FM. Welcome back Broncos
Country tonight on a Friday night, Labor Day edition. Benjamin
(17:20):
Albright getting the night off, Brandon Christall with you and
obviously talking plenty of Broncos you heard perhaps my chats
with Broncos owner Greg Penner as well as team president
Demani ge Leach, and we heard from coach Prime and
all of that.
Speaker 1 (17:35):
But right now we're going.
Speaker 2 (17:36):
To talk full college Football Weekend with the guy that's
just plugged in two college football as anybody I know,
and it may mean more than the SEC, but he's
following the entire college football landscape. That's my man, Peter
Burns at Peter Burns ESPN on Twitter or x but
I call it Twitter. He and I worked together here
a long time ago. We've been longtime friends. We you
can catch them every morning on Serious XM, on SEC
(17:58):
this morning, on the weekends on esp IN Radio. Best
week ever.
Speaker 1 (18:02):
And then you're also adding SEC.
Speaker 2 (18:04):
Now you're going to be hitting the road instead of
in the SEC studios. How excited are you to a
lot of a lot of jobs, a lot of jobs.
Speaker 3 (18:12):
And I was just calling the BMW Championship out there
in Castle Pines. Yeah, so last ye last week, that
was awesome. It's a blast. I mean, you know, coming
into the season, it always feels like there's a pretty
big gap from the time that we know finished like
the College Rule Series in Omaha to college football. But
then it was just go, go go because you had
conference realignment and you had college football playoff expansion, and
(18:33):
so I think that's why this is probably the most
talked about in probably most interesting, you know, college football season,
because we've had in probably two decades maybe I mean,
like you know, I mean, go go back and look
at FSU Ireland in that week zero game, right, I
mean like that was a great cliffhanger, and all of
a sudden you're like, well, maybe Georgia Tech could be
a playoff team. We would never think that, maybe Florida, say,
(18:56):
could get back in it. I mean, I think those
are the conversations we're going to have along with Colorado
football and all this stuff. That why everybody's all excited
about it.
Speaker 1 (19:03):
It really is interesting.
Speaker 2 (19:04):
And when Deon Sanders got here last year, everybody's like, oh,
he'll be there. But then when his kid leaves, he's
gonna go to maybe to Florida State and they're looking
for a coach.
Speaker 1 (19:12):
Or a big program, go to the SEC.
Speaker 2 (19:15):
I was looking around going I'm not saying he's gonna
coaching Boulder forever, because we just don't know. He's always
gonna be Deon Sanders and that'll be able to pay
plenty of bills wherever he is. But unless it's like
a USC or Ohio State or some school like that,
I don't know if he's racing to get back to
the South, maybe the Longhorns if that job ever opened up.
But with the twelve teams and with the Big twelve
(19:37):
being more winnable, yes, my Kansas Jayhawks are going to
be a powerhouse and losing four in the portal, but
in general, you lose Texas, you lose ou and twelve
teams getting in.
Speaker 1 (19:47):
There's no reason to.
Speaker 2 (19:48):
Think that whether he stays at Colorado or whomever coaches
at Colorado, and really any of the Power five schools
can find a year where it might come together.
Speaker 1 (19:57):
You mentioned Georgia Tech.
Speaker 2 (19:58):
We saw TCU a couple of years that was under
different bramers, but where it can happen a lot where
it's not always going to be the same usual suspects.
Speaker 3 (20:07):
Yeah, the difference is is there's gonna be two different tiers. Right,
It's like college college hoops, do you make the tournament
or can you win the tournament? Right? Like Kansas Jayhawks basketball,
they can win the tournament. A lot of teams are like, hey,
I'm just happy to make it. So can can Colorado
football in this new world make a college football playoff? Sure?
Can they compete? And with a title like a Georgia
(20:28):
can or maybe a Michigan kid last year or Alabama
in the past. I think that's I think that's tough.
So whether or not he decides to stay there or not,
he's got the buy in from that for now at least,
But then going forward, wherever it happens, he's gonna be
a firestorm. But you know who was a fire from
Lane Kiffin. Lane Kevin was a big firestorm over at
(20:48):
FAU and being offensive coordinator for Nick Saban And guess
what he took over Ale Miss And then now they're
on the on the I mean the doorstep, and it
would be frankly disappointing if they didn't make the College
Football play. So you know it, there's ebbs and flows.
I mean, go look at Scott Frost. That looked like
a no brainer over in Nebraska, and that sure as
heck didn't work out. We'll see what Matt Rule can do.
(21:10):
But again, the storylines this year are also and even
the opening game weekends, you know opening weekend games, rather
these I'm fired up for it.
Speaker 1 (21:19):
Can't wait, you can't wait it.
Speaker 2 (21:20):
Just like Bart Scott, I'm not asking you to be
critical of your teammate Paul Finebum, but he's certainly been
critical the unplenty people are and then you see the
stuff with Dion and Sean Keeler and all of that.
But in general, what is the national opinion of Dion
Sanders in the Colorado football program? Not Dion the greatest
(21:41):
cornerback Crafts of all time, in one of the handful
of greatest football players. But last year there was plenty
of buzz around it. This year it's the buzz feels different.
But that's easy for us, you know, here in the
in the Rocky Mountain region, and obviously this is the
home of the Buffs.
Speaker 1 (21:55):
We had the game last night and all that.
Speaker 2 (21:57):
But how how is he viewed and how's the program viewed?
Because you've certainly heard Finebaum's criticism, but others.
Speaker 3 (22:04):
As what roller coaster? I think when everybody saw it,
they're like, oh, this will be kind of cool. And
then they saw the Louis luggage and I'm bringing my
glue baton guys and all that transfer. They're like, all right,
that's a little much. And then all of a sudden,
all of a sudden, he starts winning, right. I mean,
it was must watch television. I mean, how many times,
did we you and I take a look at CEU
(22:24):
and CSU and be like, that's a snoozer of the game.
And now people were staying up till two am Eastern
time because they had to see what happened. So you
saw the ebbs and flows and of it. And I
think this year, you're right, it's a different tenor as
far as people will be like, dude, you won four
games last year, and you know, let's let's not get
(22:47):
the you know, the cart ahead of the horse right now.
So I think for people are interested in Colorado football,
something I remember been living there in Denver that there
were times that that was not the case. And so
you have to have the people to bring them in,
like Pt. Barnum into the ring, into the circus. But
you still have to deliver a good show, and so
(23:10):
far it's been mixed results.
Speaker 2 (23:12):
Peter Burns joining us from ESPN Radio and you catch
them on SEC and SEC this morning on Serious Sex
them he has lots of jobs. But yeah, it's funny
because when you lived here, and that was obviously in
the early part of the odds, I guess is a
better way to say it. From you know, twenty ten
to twenty fourteen some in there, but we would go
to Buffs games just to tailgate and have a good time,
(23:34):
you and I. It wasn't to cover it. It wasn't
because we were going to see something awesome. And I
guess my math is right. That's probably the very end
of the Big Twelve, which you and I are both
partial two growing up in Texas. But then the move
to the Pac twelve, which was cool and exciting, and
now they're back in the Big twelve and maybe that's
a good place to kind of go. Next is with
(23:54):
the conference realignment. We understand the SEC did get stronger,
and I saw where you guys did some really cool
kickoff stuff with the SEC going to Norman and going
to Austin, a place that you know, maybe maybe a
little too well from growing up not too far away
in San Antonio. And yeah, for sure, my whole family
went there and I, as you know, I grew up
a Longhorns fan too and cheerfour most weekends as long
(24:17):
as you're not playing the Jayhawks.
Speaker 1 (24:18):
But so you see those teams leaving.
Speaker 2 (24:20):
Before we get to what that means for the SEC,
this reworked Big Twelve with Colorado back in it, and
it's exciting for someone like me and for folks that
like seeing the Jayhawks come in. But you look from
a hoop standpoint and Arizona being added and some of
the other schools basketballs, but then football wise, how is
the Big Twelve viewed?
Speaker 1 (24:40):
Knowing if you want to.
Speaker 2 (24:41):
Just for the sake of this conversation, say, look, SEC
and Big Ten are cut above, and you can look
at the championships there. But I'm not sure that the
ACC is is better than the Big Twelve as it
stands right now.
Speaker 3 (24:52):
No, not top to bottom. And I mean again, I
think that's part of the thing that's interesting about what's
going on with the Big Twelve right now is that
you have legitimate league probably I mean now a Texas
at Oklahoma leaving. You could look at whether it's Utah,
k State, Oklahoma State, you know, all the way down
to probably TCU, who had to run a couple of
years ago. There's four or five, maybe six teams that
(25:14):
you're like, at the end of the year, I could
see them winning the TI, winning the conference, and even
the bottom of it too. If you start looking at
Houston coming in or I mean, you know, Tinsey or
Baylor or something like that. They've had runs before, so
I think probably top to bottom the most parody week
in and week out, like the top of the SEC
and the bottom of the SEC. That's gonna there's gonna
(25:35):
be a pretty big gap. Same thing with the Big
ten I and I think even the same thing with
the a SEC. I don't think that there's a huge
gap between you know, team sixteen in the Big twelve
versus team one. And again I had to look that
up because I forgot about how many teams are in
the damn conferences anymore. I mean, seriously, like it's it's
out of control.
Speaker 2 (25:52):
It does feel like at some point names may change
a little because these numbers don't mean I mean, SEC works,
and I guess ACC works with a Big ten and
Big twelve seems silly with the number of teams in.
Speaker 3 (26:03):
The ACC only works if you call it the All
Coast Conference. Now you add cal and Stanford and it's
not the Atlantic Coast Conference because I mean, now you're
you're adding those two teams in them, which is kind
of crazy.
Speaker 1 (26:13):
Well, isn't SMU there too?
Speaker 3 (26:14):
Yeah, yeah, SMU. They just decided, Hey, listen, like my deal.
It was so funny because SMABU has so much booster money.
They're like, bro, we don't even care about the money,
Like we will pay an entry fee to get into
the fraternity party basically. I mean that's what they's trying
to do.
Speaker 1 (26:29):
Looking even this first weekend.
Speaker 2 (26:31):
And like you said, we got a fun one in
Ireland last week with Georgia Tech and Florida State, and
then you get the buffs kind of in the standalone
game with apologies to Mike Jayhawks and Lindenwood and Missouri
and Mike Clisses Murray State Racers and Popeye Jones Murray
State Racers, Utah something like Thursday, not getting the biggest matchups,
(26:52):
and then you know, a fun one with Temple and
Oklahoma night. Nick Benito, I know, told me that he
was going there, and I'd imagine maybe you'd see some
of his teammates. I didn't get to talk to Marvin
Mims and those guys because they were walking.
Speaker 1 (27:02):
Across the field yesterday.
Speaker 2 (27:03):
I said, are you going to watch as soon as
and he said yeah, so you're at a guest Temple,
so it should be easy. And I said, well it's
no Linden would the featured game, And even though it
comes early tomorrow morning, you've got Clemson and Georgia number
fourteen against number one. They're in Atlanta. How cool is
it to have that big of a game with you know,
I get the dabos teams maybe down from where it
(27:25):
was when it was rolling and Deshaun Watson those guys
and Trevor Lawrence are there and they're playing for titles.
But how exciting is that on Week one in Atlanta?
How crazy is that.
Speaker 3 (27:32):
Going to be? Well, it's going to be crazy. A
it's because it's Georgia in Atlanta. But more importantly, I
think it's months especially after FSU lost, because I have
I see shades of the PAC twelve kind of brewin
right now. Remember PAC twelve the first you know, three
or four years ago. Every time that they would play
a big non conference game, they would get destroyed or
they would lose, And all of a sudden, it's like,
all right, well we don't really need to care about
(27:54):
the PAC twelve. They're not going to be good. Well
they what happened they dissolved? Well, what happens with the
ACC Right now? They kind of move in that spot
about like all right, you got FSU and Clemson trying
to sue and get out of the league and something
to that extent. And so if all of a sudden, FSU,
your contender ends up losing Week one, and then Clemson
just gets absolutely vote raced, which is what I think happens,
(28:15):
because Georgia's defense is ridiculously good and I don't think
Club Necks ready for that defense. Then all of a sudden,
you're like, man, does anybody care about the ACC any longer?
And so again I think that's that it's bigger than
just that game. And then you know, NC State does
it look good right from the jump? Right? You know
at their first game, they look kind a little sloppy.
(28:37):
And they got Tennessee next week, and I think Tennessee
is a sleeper to make the college football playoffs. So
you know, all of a sudden, these are your contenders
and your conference, and the SEC continues to blow them out.
What happens next, Like no one's gonna give them more
money to watch that conference. That's that's a tough deal.
I think Miami Florida is though? Is that in Notre
Dame an m I mean, those are two unbelievable matchups
(29:00):
it's so important for both of those programs. Are all
four of those programs.
Speaker 2 (29:03):
Rather Yeah, Florida's unranked and the games in Gainesville, but
Miami is just a two and a half point favorite.
Speaker 1 (29:09):
And we know that.
Speaker 2 (29:11):
You talk about throwing out the records. Florida and Miami
and Florida State and Miami and Florida they play each
other nearly every year. They certainly did you know in
yesteryear and the Bobby Bowden Steve Spurrier era and those games.
The records don't necessarily matter. I get there's zero zero,
but the point spread may not matter. It's kids all
grew up together playing against each other, they know each other.
That does feel like sneaky kind of one of the fun,
fun games of the weekend. And I was going to
(29:33):
ask you about you get number seven Notre Dame at
A and M. I think that's where college game day
is Saturday morning, And so how much fun does it
when not only do they roll out week one? It's exciting, right,
you havet the college football video game back that's gotten
fans fired up. But you're getting some marquee matchups because
you also have a team that's near and dear to
your heart, your childhood team you grew up loving in LSU,
(29:55):
who's ranked thirteenth, losing the Heisman Trophy winner against twenty three,
the twenty third rank you know.
Speaker 1 (30:02):
Southern Cal Trojan.
Speaker 2 (30:04):
So how exciting is is that? And it's played in Vegas,
no less, But just the games of the weekend in general,
the big weekend for a kickoff, not not just easing
into it.
Speaker 3 (30:14):
Well, because of all the twelve team playoff, right, I
mean again, you know, because you ended up having a
twelve team playoff all of a sudden, people are like, hey,
I'll listen, I'll put myself out there if I lose
one game at least to commitment would be like, well, yeah,
you lost it to allegedly a pretty good non conference
and you went out there. On the flip side of it,
you see teams like Missouri that are playing a bunch
(30:34):
of smaller ranked you know, non ranked teams right from
the get go, and you're like, all right, well you
pretty much need that not necessarily run the table, but
you don't have that kind of mulligin in your pocket.
And so I personally like the fact that you have
notre Dame A and m that Miami and Florida are
playing that, LSU is playing USC and UCLA this year, like,
(30:54):
you know, be great, you know, I mean that, And
I think that's going to be the interesting part. Used
to be you had to be undefeated or eleven and
one to make the college football playoff. Now with a
twelve team playoff, ten and two is going to make it.
Nine and three actually has a chance. And so it's
more of kind of the nflization of college football. Hey,
the players are starting to get paid like NFL players
(31:15):
to a certain extent. And then now, I mean you
go back and looking with some of those Broncos games
or years that we've we covered. You look at you know,
thirteen and you know three, back back in our day
when they played sixteen, We're like, that's an incredible year.
Or you know, even eleven and five is a damn
good year in that division. So how often are the
lyn Woods? How often are the Murray States? And all
of a sudden, we're just going to see just a
(31:37):
ton of those games that are just good versus quote
unquote good.
Speaker 2 (31:41):
Peter Burns with us just for another minute or two
here on Broncos Country tonight, Brandon Christal in for.
Speaker 1 (31:46):
Benjamin Albrighting and you can follow Peter at.
Speaker 2 (31:48):
Peter Burns ESPN or listen to him every morning on
Serious Sex m SEC Morning with My Man Chris Doring
former Bronco Chris Doran on the weekends on ESPN Radio.
And so with that expanded playoffs the last last thing
that will do other than ill give me a quick
pick on whether or not Texas Boat Races CSU to
cover the thirty two or if if the Rams can
(32:10):
go to Austin and make it a game. But how
do you see it shaking out? Because I imagine the
SEC probably welcomes the and I guess these big conferences
welcome to the playoffs. Becase's like, okay, instead of us getting
screwed in an Alabama isn't inn and Nick Saban sour
about it or whatever it may be. It's like, oh, Michigan,
an ohouse state, think they'll be there, Flora, right, they
(32:30):
think they're going to be there every year. Georgia and Alabama, No,
they'll be there right. Like it's that is that what
it's been met with, even if it has reduced maybe
what the regular season will mean.
Speaker 3 (32:39):
I think the regular season gets a little bit like
had we not had the conference not expanded and brought
Texas at Oklahoma in and we were just having a
twelve team playoff and he had the old divisions the
way it was, I think people would be like, eh, okay,
I don't really you know, I want something special. I
want a four team playoff. But I think because Texas
and Oklahoma come in and now you've got a couple
of differ you know, and some of the teams are
(33:01):
better like a Missouri, like an old miss that there's
so many different storylines, they're excited. I mean in the SEC, no, lie,
it's gonna be easier to make the college Football Playoff
than it will be the SEC championship game. I mean
that's that's the truth. And in years past and go
look at last year. The reason why Alabama got in
and not Georgia and Georgia was out when Ardualy they
were the best team, you know, week in and week out,
(33:24):
is because of the SEC championship game. I do worry
that come championship game weekend, especially for the Big Ten
and the SEC, they're not going to matter anymore because
both of those teams that get in, they're going to
be in one is just gonna have a bye week.
The other is going to lose and more than likely host.
The consolation prize is to host a college football playoff
(33:45):
game at home, which is going to be I think
still the coolest thing in late December, like when NFL
football is going on and all of a sudden, you
see I mean, god, can you imagine if see you
in the snow with with with Deon Sanders and that
whole crew you know, hosting you know, Michigan or something
like that or LSU cool. Hell yeah, yeah, all in
(34:05):
on that.
Speaker 1 (34:05):
We'd all sign up for that.
Speaker 2 (34:06):
Okay, so I have less than thirty seconds. But what
happens in Austin with Braden Foller, Nickelosi and Tory Horton
and Jay Norvel's rams who are a thirty two point
dog in the morning and Marty Lenz, who I worked
on Colorado's morning news. He's there in Austin or will
be rather to watch his watch his rammis who I
worked on Colorado's morning news. He's there in Austin or
will be rather to watch his watch his ramis.
Speaker 3 (34:29):
I saw Texas in the spring in late last year,
and the way that the Sark has built his team
is everything how Kirby smart and BAMA has built their
championship team. So I'd like to say it'd be a
little bit different, but I think it's a you know,
hook them by about thirty five of that one.
Speaker 2 (34:45):
At Peter Burns ESPN on I still call it Twitter,
you can call it X but SEC Network and you'll
