Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome to It, Broncos Country Tonight, Benjamin Albright, Gret smith Man,

(00:04):
the Myth, the Mustache, Nick Ferguson's got the night Off tonight.

Speaker 2 (00:08):
He's down there.

Speaker 1 (00:09):
Yeah, I think he's got what's referred to with Seiner's elbow.
He was down there doing too many autographs. The elbow
started flaring up a little bit down.

Speaker 2 (00:17):
There at the Verizon deal. So was he dressed up
in his alter ego?

Speaker 1 (00:21):
Yeah, I don't know if the Cousin Randall and you know,
if the Cousin Randall outfit is bad, I still think
we got to do because we need to do some
new promo shots for the show, right and I still
feel like we need to replicate the lethal weapon cover
we can have. You know, Grant, you could be doing
the Joe Peshi thing where you're coming out the middle.

Speaker 3 (00:36):
There or whatever.

Speaker 1 (00:37):
I'll put the I'll get the the mel Gibson mullet
put that on. He could do the Uncle Randall, Danny Glover,
you know kind of thing going on there.

Speaker 3 (00:44):
Well get too.

Speaker 2 (00:46):
Yeah, you have the voice to out.

Speaker 1 (00:48):
I'm just saying, but did you see the thing I
said Jo on Instagram because you were talking with Steve
about the white Man can't jump.

Speaker 2 (00:54):
Yes, yeah, Steve Patser, so you and Nick could do
that too.

Speaker 3 (00:58):
Yeah, there we go. We need it with us. I'm famous.

Speaker 1 (01:00):
I still want to do the haul of oats is
cover the tiers for fears cover I've got. I've got
a whole lot of ideas here. We just need to
get a We need to up our wig budget around here.
I need a wig guy. So if you, if you
know anybody, let me know. Guys, we're gonna be the
Great American Beer Fest on Thursday. Myself, Dick Ferguson be
broadcasting live from there. That's gonna be interesting. Nick does
not partake of the alcohol, so I guess I'll just have.

Speaker 3 (01:22):
To double up.

Speaker 2 (01:23):
Maybe they'll have some NA selections down there.

Speaker 3 (01:25):
Well, we'll figure.

Speaker 2 (01:26):
I don't know if I think you just have both,
That's what I figured.

Speaker 1 (01:29):
I'd just take take one for the team and just
just drink them both, which you know, Coach Pegana and
I had a few, uh last year. It's a Great
American Beer Fest. But we're trying to send you guys
out there as well. So if you want to win
a pair of passes to the Great American Beer Fest. Now,
this will be the Saturday session October twelfth. Get passes
at Great American Beer Festival dot com or the Colorful.

Speaker 3 (01:50):
Right now three oh three sem one three eighty five
eighty five.

Speaker 1 (01:52):
That's three O three seven one three eighty five eighty five,
and you will win a pair of passes to the
Great American Beer Fest Saturday Session October twelfth. Was that
we're gonna run out to the Kawa Common Spiral hotline
and bring on our good buddy Ryan Michael go inside
the numbers. Ryan's been out under the weather the last
couple of weeks. I certainly understand what that's like. Is
I've been under the weather for quite some time. But Ryan,

(02:13):
you're back. The only streak we have to worry about
is the fact that the Broncos are winning.

Speaker 4 (02:18):
Yeah, I mean with a three game winning streak, I
think I need to get sick more often. If there's
any correlation there. I would happily take being under the
weather to see another three game winning streak. So it's
definitely been good to see the way that our team
has been playing.

Speaker 2 (02:31):
Yeah, they really have.

Speaker 1 (02:32):
It's been fun and it's you know, it's always more
fun to cover this team with a win streak three
and two through five weeks, riding a three game win streak,
how are you feeling about the twenty twenty four Denver Broncos.

Speaker 4 (02:46):
A little bit of a mixed bag. Then, to be
honest with you, three and two is a better record
than I had anticipated through five games. So through that lens,
I'm feeling very hopeful. I'm feeling very positive, and certainly
the brand of football we've been playing over the last
three weeks, winning primarily with defense, seeing the offense certainly
step up last Sunday, We're winning in a number of

(03:08):
different ways. I'm still more than a little bit nervous
about the offense, despite you know, putting up thirty four points.
Seven of that you can give it to the pick six.
We haven't scored thirty four points. It's the highest total
in the last two years, highest under Sean Payton's regime. Defensively,
we're knocking it out of the park and I'm looking
forward to getting into some of those numbers if you

(03:29):
want positive. Certainly, seeing bo go nineteen of twenty seven,
he completed seventy percent of his passes for the first
time in his career. Average seven point six yards per
ten shoot me total touchdowns, no picks, no fumbles, one
hundred and seventeen point two pass the rating great box
or performance. The caveat is he did it against the
Raiders defense. It doesn't impress me too much. But he

(03:51):
did complete passes to eleven different broncos of something I
like seeing no picks, no fumbles. It was a clean game,
so kind of in between.

Speaker 1 (04:00):
Yeah, you know, that's the thing. I think that there
are promising things to take away from each of these games.

Speaker 2 (04:05):
It does look like bow is maturing slowly but surely.

Speaker 1 (04:09):
The first half of the game, it still seemed to
tick too fast for them, but it's starting to slow
down in the second half of these games. Now you
just needed to get slower all the way across the board, slightly.

Speaker 2 (04:19):
Below average on the ground.

Speaker 1 (04:21):
You know, we had kind of an anemic passing game
in the first quarter of the season, some not frankly
great efficiency marks for bow Knicks despite a strong box score.
Where can we pick these things up and be more
consistent in moving the football and not punting as much.

Speaker 4 (04:39):
We have a lot to improve then, and we started
to see a little bit of that last Sunday. So far,
the one notable positive offensive statistic was we ranked third
in the league in fact percentage. It was a big
point of contention as far as sean not wanting to
see quarterbacks take unnecessary sacks because sacks can be drive
killers to almost the same extent the interceptions are automatic

(05:01):
drive enders. So at four point one percent that's an
elite number as far as sack percentage. We're towards the
bottom third of the league. Nineteenth in rushing yards twenty
first and rushing yards per game twenty first, in yards
per carry scoring twenty second in the league. So we
went from nineteenth last year to twenty second through five games.
That's not great. Twenty fourth and completion percentage twenty eight

(05:23):
from passing yards twenty nine, touchdown passes thirtieth yards per tenth,
dead last in the NFL as a team in passer
rating at seventy one point four. So we're starting to
see a little bit of growth in the rushing game.
We're obviously not going to finish a season with a
quarterback as our leading rusher, so it's good to see
both knock down to number two in that stat but
there's a lot to pick up both rushing and passing

(05:44):
the football, and it's going to be a tremendous challenge
against the Chargers that it is.

Speaker 2 (05:48):
Talking with Ryan Michael at the Ryan Michael on Twitter.

Speaker 1 (05:52):
On the other side of the ball, league pass defense,
the only thing hotter than Pats Tartanas Galgado is wonder
Woman sacks.

Speaker 3 (05:57):
And QB hits.

Speaker 1 (05:58):
So through the roof as Joseph turning this defense twenty
seven scoring defense last year into a top three defense
this year, and they might not be two or three.

Speaker 2 (06:06):
Talk to me about the defensive side of the ball.

Speaker 4 (06:09):
It's been a turnaround that exceeded my most optimistic expectations.
And you and I have been talking since the winner
about just how much we were excited to see what
trans strips it could do. Year two in the system.
Like you said, we're second in the league in points
per game surrendered at fourteen point six, second in the league,
and quarterback it's forty two quarterback it's through five games, fantastic.

(06:31):
Our passing defense is suffocated tied for second yards per
tenth at five point eight, third in the league in
facts nineteen facts third and TFLs. We're doing about everything
right that you can imagine. And when you see Pats
or Tan return and interception one hundred yards, it just
brings me back to those cold DCT shows back in

(06:52):
March when we were talking about the possibility of trading
Pats or ten to move up and get a quarterback.
And here we are months later, and I think that
I've been proven right that certains the best corner in
the league.

Speaker 1 (07:04):
Well, yeah, we weren't talking about that where we're making
fun of it to clarify, but yes, that is the
thing that's going on. And it's not just Cirtan though.
On the other side of the on the other side
from Sir Tan, you've got Riley Moss. I mean, we
might as well be calling him Randy Moss the way
he's skying for sky and for interceptions out there. I
was told that white guys couldn't jump like that, but
Randy rather Riley Boss is breaking the mold.

Speaker 4 (07:26):
He really is. And I was going to save this
stat and is going to post it live to Twitter
right now. He has thirty three bind tackles through five games,
so he leads the Broncos. If you average that raid
out at six point six per game, he could finish
the year with one hundred and twelve point two total
tackles for the year. So I did some digging into
the franchise record Brook there's a time two dv's same

(07:49):
season two thousand and six teammates Team Nicks Darren Williams
had eighty six tackles and fifteen games. Cham Bailey eighty
six tackles and sixteen games. So we might be a
little bit early into the year, but he's looking to
obliterate the franchise record for a cornerback soars total tackles.

Speaker 1 (08:05):
Talking with with Ryan Michael again that contributed to pow
Football Hall of Fame at the Ryan Michael on tweerre
one of the little deal deeper on Bonnix's numbers. Let
us know where he ranks, I guess amongst his peers
this year. How Sean Payton's passing game is compared to
the Drew Brees.

Speaker 4 (08:19):
Eerro sure I mean fourth in the league in zac
percentage of four point zero seven percent rounds up to
four point one beyond that thirty first and passer rating
seventy one point four, suretieth in yards per at ten
five point two, twenty fifth and completion percentage which is
a stat that we were hoping he would be a
little bit more for efficient in sixty one point eight

(08:40):
percent success percentage, which is an efficiency metric per Pro
Football Reference here is thirty first and is twenty nine
and adjusted net yards per attempt. So when you factor
in Ben just how statistically dominant he was against the Raiders,
to still see him towards the very very bottom of
the league is a testament to just how a visibal
he was in the early games to kick off the season.

(09:02):
So there's no comparison so far between him and Drew Brees,
nor should that be the expectation for a rookie quarterback.
You know, Drew was an absolute master of blending elite
pass accuracy with fluid, live anticipation. He carved defenses apart
Bill Nick so far has been to see it and
throw it kind of guy. He just hasn't had the
profits of speed to be able to hit receivers in

(09:24):
motion and really facilitate opportunities for our guys to get
yards after the catch. So, you know, the elite fact percentage,
he certainly had that in common with Drew Brees, and
that was the case at Oregon. But as far as
passing efficiency have a long way ago.

Speaker 1 (09:37):
Well, I think you hit the nail on the head
with the see you throw at thing, because that's been
a you know, sort of complaint of mind about Bo
so far. He's been sort of Russell Wilson in that
regard to the see it throw it rather than anticipatory.
And I think a large part of the reason that
the main route Combo right now for the Broncos' curl
flat instead slant flat is because of that. He has
to see it to throw, which is easier on the
curl flat than it is on the slant flat, where
you have to be more anticipatory.

Speaker 4 (09:59):
Agreed, And it would be interesting to see if we
could start to facilitate scenarios where we could turn Courtland
and Sutton into a Mike Thomas and kind to bring
it back to the Sean Payton Bays in terms of
what he did.

Speaker 3 (10:10):
Well.

Speaker 4 (10:10):
Again, you're comparing a guy who is, in my opinion,
the second greatest quarterback in the history of professional football
and Drew Brees. And I understand I'm in the minority
and having that opinion with a rookie quarterback who's entering
Game six. So we need to temper the expectations. The
best thing you could have for a young rookie quarterback
is an elite defense on the opposite side of the football.
It's one of the reasons why we're winning games, and

(10:32):
it's allowing Boe to be the best version of himself.
As far as what we saw against Davis.

Speaker 3 (10:36):
We've seen these stats.

Speaker 1 (10:37):
We've heard the stats, but it's five games enough of
a sample size to take much from.

Speaker 4 (10:43):
I don't think so. I don't think so. I mean
historically speaking, then you look at quarterbacks who had low
efficiency as rookies and had bounced back sophomore dominant campaigns.
The two recent examples that come to mind are Jared
Goff when he was paired with Sean McVeigh in twenty
seventeen and Trevor Lawrence going from Urban Meyer to Doug Peterson.

(11:03):
In both cases, it's going to be Sean Payton for
the next few years, regardless of how he plays. Certainly
this year and next year it is very minimum. So
he is good, it's going to be riding or dying
with Sean Payden's offense. There's no hope to bring in
a new offensive strategist to see what he could do
with Nicks. So given that we are now twenty two

(11:24):
games in to Sean Payton's tenure here the Denver Broncos,
and we've been looking at an offense that's been in
the bottom shirt of the league in scoring. I've always said,
I'm not so concerned as far as how we're producing points.
At the end of the day, you have to produce points.
So we had thirty four of them last week, give
seven of them the Pats or can but we have
a long, long way to go offensively. And for me,

(11:45):
it's frustrating to see a coach like Robert sala let
go where on the defensive side of the ball that
just have been essentially a top and defense over the
last three years and five games, incing this year top
three defense. Is he responsible for the offense struggles As
a head coach of force to an extent he's taught
to be. But in Sean Payton's case, how many seasons

(12:07):
did we see the Saints win seven games and because
he was taking care of business offensively, he evaded criticism
for how abysmal they were defensively. We are not affording
that same sort of consideration to Robert and I'm just
disappointed at seeing that.

Speaker 3 (12:22):
Yeah, same way.

Speaker 1 (12:23):
Some of the responses I got today were sort of
weird when people talk about how terribly he was. I'm like,
do you guys not remember the Jets before he got there?
Do you not remember the Adam Gase era at two
and fourteen? That just seems ridiculous. You know, It's funny
to me how the grass is greener and or Jets
greener in this particular case.

Speaker 2 (12:40):
Yeah, I don't know.

Speaker 1 (12:40):
I think the Jets are about to get what's coming
to them. I think this season they might get a
rally around the coach phenomenon for a game or two,
but I think this is going to fall apart on them.
We'll see, you know. I wanted to close this segment
strong Ryan with some of the other standouts statistical standouts so.

Speaker 3 (12:54):
Far in the season.

Speaker 1 (12:54):
Got to figure Zach allops two obviously there, But who
are some of the standouts for the Broncos through the
first quarter of the season.

Speaker 4 (13:00):
Yeah, I mean, obviously Zach Allen five PFLs, twenty one
total tackles, twelve quarterback instant three sacks. He's knocking it
out of the park on the defensive line. And we
have passed the ten to get two interceptions in one
game as an impressive accomplishment considering people don't like to
shrow in his direction. You see what happens when you
do that. I've been a big fan of what Will
what's is doing. He's forty two of forty seven on

(13:21):
field goals since joining the team, two of two last
week against the Raiders, in twelve of thirteen this season.
So when you have money in the bank on special
teams that way. I understand the Broncos are not a
high flying offense just yet, but those points that we
are producing is the difference between winning and losing football
games that we figure at three and two, and Will
has just been money in the bank. I think it's
important not to overlook what he's been doing.

Speaker 1 (13:44):
Ryan. I've always appreciate getting the chance to have you all,
get you inside the numbers with the rest of us here,
and certainly are glad that you're not being under the
weather anymore and having the issues with that. My voice
is still given out at the end of show, so
I know how long road back from that can be.

Speaker 3 (14:00):
But we appreciate you, brother, Yes, sir, absolutely take care.

Speaker 1 (14:04):
Ryan Michael let the Ryan Michael on Twitter love going
inside the numbers with him. I'll be back, of course
every week now as well. For those of you wondering,
Nick Ferguson does have the night off. You know I
was clowning a little bit earlier with the Designer's elbow.
He was at the Verizon event with Big Al Ryan
earlier today. Hopefully you guys enjoyed that I got a
chance to meet Miles the mascot and see the cheerleaders

(14:25):
at Baby See Ryan, Nick and Big Alice.

Speaker 2 (14:27):
Well, yeah, they brought out the people that the audience
wants to see and they left you back here at this.

Speaker 3 (14:32):
Stoo correct, so they nobody wanted to see it.

Speaker 1 (14:34):
I say, it's like last night when we were at
the Sporty Pickle. You know, you go up to the
bar and you mentioned Big Al, you get a free beer.
You go up and mention my name, you get a
hundred dollars out of.

Speaker 2 (14:41):
To your tap.

Speaker 1 (14:43):
So it's uh, you know, gotta know your folks, gotta
know what.

Speaker 2 (14:46):
To do in those situations.

Speaker 1 (14:51):
I think in the next segment we're gonna get a
chance to meet our guy, Zach Seeger's back here who's training.
He's the latest edition here at Kaaway. Some of you
guys have hear up on the show before, obviously, but
I'm gonna get to you guys a chance to get
to know us. He's coming on here full time at KOA,
gonna be working doing some producing, some board operating, giving
hairstyling tips on all all of those kinds of things.

Speaker 2 (15:11):
Look at those that luscious head of hair it is
that is a that is a fine, fine head of
cabbage right there. I think you could take some from
the top of his head. The one of the reason
we hired him out a little bit.

Speaker 1 (15:23):
I need to rest out the turf, and so he's
gonna be like the donor hair there. I'm gonna have
a quoff by the time I'm done, so uh five
six six zeros in text line. I'll get to some
of you guys text we come back. We've got an
FL six pack. Lant Sanderson Top of the Hour, Zac
Seekers next Broncos Country Tonight. A special thanks to Ryan

Speaker 2 (15:57):
New episode tomorrow with Ken Solomon. What is the name?
Doesn't ring a bell? He was Rocky the Nuggets mascot
there for like thirty years.

Speaker 3 (16:05):
Yeah, so pretty cool.

Speaker 2 (16:07):
Kalmbo coming tomorrow as well. Looking forward to it.

Speaker 1 (16:09):
My personal favorite podcast listening Great is such a great,
great interview he really is, in addition to be in
the great board op and producer that he is and
the most fantastic mustache in the industry. If you can't tell,
I'm also jealous. Five six six nine zero is the
text line.

Speaker 2 (16:24):
We're gonna have a little.

Speaker 1 (16:24):
Bit of a special chat here though, because newest member of.

Speaker 3 (16:26):
KOA, Zach Seers in the house. What's going on, buddy?

Speaker 5 (16:30):
Not much excited to finally be here talking more Broncos
with you, giving you a more more of a hard
time for your bad quarterback takes and keeping you accountable.

Speaker 3 (16:39):
I'm looking forward to it.

Speaker 1 (16:40):
I already appreciate you coming out the gate salty like that, swinging.

Speaker 2 (16:43):
That's what the kind of stuff we need around here.

Speaker 1 (16:45):
We do need people to hold me accountable, mostly for
not wearing pasts to work, but you know other things
as well.

Speaker 2 (16:51):
I do try to get under your skin. Yeah, I
think a hunderback takes will do it.

Speaker 3 (16:57):
It will. But down this, I'm sending the stage off
the bat.

Speaker 1 (17:01):
Wait, I'm harkening back to, like, don't you owe me
one hundred dollars?

Speaker 3 (17:05):
I don't think I do.

Speaker 2 (17:06):
Pat Mahomes chiefs offense is.

Speaker 5 (17:08):
Something okay, actually actually okay, okay, ive you did forgive
you so I don't owe you the money.

Speaker 3 (17:16):
I don't. But now I see what it was.

Speaker 5 (17:19):
I was actually paying one hundred dollars so that you
can lord it over me for the rest that I went.

Speaker 3 (17:24):
Man, I was getting paid under dollar exactly.

Speaker 2 (17:26):
I had.

Speaker 1 (17:27):
I had this conversation with somebody a couple of weeks
ago where they because they were asking about something about,
you know, online bets, and I'm telling them to pay
it to charity and all this kind of stuff. I'm like, yeah,
I don't actually ever want the money when I make
these bets I want to be able to lord it
over somebody for the end of time.

Speaker 3 (17:40):
And it's like it's like Dave Logan.

Speaker 1 (17:42):
Dave Logan and I had some we have a couple
of stake bets or whatever, and I'm down. I think
I'm down now to to him. I think I'm down
to total. We've had like six stake bets and I'm
down to now. And Dave's the same way. He's he's
the exact same philosophy, which is I would have win
the bet to win the bet, but really I don't
want to.

Speaker 2 (17:58):
I don't want to pay off because Dave've never come
to collect this. Take dinner.

Speaker 1 (18:00):
He said, No, I just want to own it in
perpetuity so I can lord it over you forever. And
that's really, you know, that's really what that's about. For
those who don't know Zach, seekers tell us a little
bit about you know, you came over from Chassa, obviously,
but you have experience covering the Broncos, obviously, been a
guest on this show.

Speaker 3 (18:15):
And we you know, we we give each.

Speaker 1 (18:17):
Other a hard time, but we know each other a
while and I love your your insight on things, even
if we don't agree but give everybody a little bit
of a rundown about who you are and what you've
done in the.

Speaker 3 (18:25):
Industry so far.

Speaker 5 (18:26):
Yeah, got into this thing right out of high school
over at Mile High Sports. Did some great work for
them for a while covering the Broncos. That's how I
got to know you. Ben, got to know Ryan as well, Steve.
A bunch of the people that are on this show.
You know, just going to the Broncos practices, games, you know,
everything on that beat. Not a fun time to necessarily
be around there. But got my feet, got got experience,

(18:48):
you know, radio writing, you know, podcasting, the whole nine,
and yeah, ready to do some more. I've got my
Let's Talk Broncos thing on the side. Everyone check out
Let's Talk Bronco. I've got written articles over there. I
have my game recap up tomorrow. Uh, Let's Talk Broncos
on YouTube. We've got our show there. We're going live

(19:08):
just about every day of the week. We got Mario Vitansey.
I know he's a friend of the show. He does
a Tuesday show for us every week.

Speaker 2 (19:15):
Uh. Patrick Keyoti, I know he's a regular guest on here. Two.
He's he's on our thing every.

Speaker 5 (19:20):
Week and then we go uh Mondays Wednesdays and a
post game after after the games to uh give you
all our takes with Brie and Joey, and I would
recommend it. I think we just we go in depth
on a on a level that I think few do
in this market. And I'm really proud of the coverage
we provide there. One of my favorite podcasts listen to. Obviously,
along with the taking for granted podcasts.

Speaker 1 (19:39):
I always enjoy you Bree, who fills in for me
from time to time when I'm out. Uh. And and
Joey as well, who we just you know what, he's
the he's the third stooch. We're just not letting him
on the list.

Speaker 3 (19:48):
Kid.

Speaker 1 (19:48):
We love we love Joey as well. And you guys
should check out the last talk Broncos stuff. I always
appreciate their their stuff as well.

Speaker 2 (19:56):
Uh.

Speaker 1 (19:56):
Now you're gonna be working here, You're gonna be doing
a little producing, little board opp maybe some stuff on
the website, you know that kind of stuff.

Speaker 3 (20:03):
Yeah, hoping to bring some writing here as well.

Speaker 5 (20:04):
And then you said it, doing some board op stuff
hopefully hopping on the mic some to talk some Broncos talk,
some sports. Yeah, just lend my hand wherever I can
and get back into this game.

Speaker 1 (20:14):
I absolutely love it so much. What have you thought
about the Broncos season so far? You know, people call
me wet blanket all right.

Speaker 2 (20:20):
Actually I coined that for myself and then it took off.

Speaker 1 (20:22):
But people call me wet blanket all right because I've
I've had a little bit more of a wait and
see approach with with the Bnick stuff. I was a
little upset. That upsets probably the wrong word. I was
a little irritated that Sean Payton had set the bar
for Benicks impossibly high due to the preseason. He was
dialing up game plans, plan starters against insurance salesmen in
the preseason, and people came into this thing expecting Bonix

(20:44):
to blow the doors off, and that obviously didn't happen.
Through the first quarter of the season, we saw some
flashes Tampa of course the Raiders game as well. But
what has been your overall impression of the Broncos through
the first quarter of this season?

Speaker 5 (20:56):
You know, I think you got to be thrilled with
the win loss record and then also just how they
AFC is shaking out.

Speaker 2 (21:01):
This was a year where.

Speaker 5 (21:02):
I mean, the win loss record was set at five
and a half for a reason, and I think people
in Denver got excited, especially with the preseason looking as
good as it did. But this team has seventy million
dollars less to spend on their roster than other NFL
teams because of how much dead cap they're taking on.

Speaker 1 (21:15):
I blame you for this, by the way, for putting
all this possibility out on a couple of years ago.

Speaker 3 (21:19):
I blame me.

Speaker 5 (21:20):
Hey, it would be better if they did what I
said and cut them a year sooner and got this
out of the way rather than experiment waste their time
in twenty twenty three. That's neither here nor there, dealing
with all this dead cap, dealing with the loss of
draft picks that come with the Rest trade, the Peyton trade,
Big Gambles up for Riley Moss, which looks great now,
but it does limit how many young talented players you have.

(21:41):
If you don't have cap space, where are you finding talent?
Mainly rookie contracts. Broncos have a limited number of those
as well, so I think they're outperforming expectations like crazy.
And then the quarterback, I mean, that's what it all
comes down to. I think that's a little disappointing, maybe
so far, just because you said it were the flashes
in the Tampa game and the in the Vegas game.

Speaker 2 (22:02):
But we've seen national media tweeting.

Speaker 5 (22:04):
About historical ineptitude for his other three starts, and and
let's be that you don't want it to go there.

Speaker 1 (22:09):
I think the other part of that is juxtaposing it
with how good Jayden Daniels has looked in Washington under
perhaps the greatest coaching staff ever assembled, with Dan Quinn
at the top.

Speaker 3 (22:18):
I know, it's just so easy to get on to
your skill. I love it. I look big Kingsbury guy
over here. Okay, well fair enough, you know it's uh.
I think uh. I think that.

Speaker 1 (22:30):
And our good friend of coach, coach McGonnell, by the way,
on that on that Washington staff as well, which by
the way, reached out.

Speaker 3 (22:34):
I was talking to him this this week.

Speaker 1 (22:37):
Coach who hosted with you co hosted with me. The
last time we were doing the Great American Beer Fest.
We may have gotten a little carried away with the samples.

Speaker 2 (22:45):
He said, a little busier this time around, A little
bit busy.

Speaker 3 (22:47):
Although I was trying to convince him to call in
sick this.

Speaker 2 (22:50):
Week and just come co host with Greet the Great
American Beer Festival. I A'm reaching out to them trying
and get it get him on during their bi We yeah, because.

Speaker 1 (22:56):
We got to go through their pr staff or whatever now.
But anyway, good luck to you, and I'm happy for
him that they're having a lot of success out there
in Washington right now. On the flip side of this,
and it has been that way with Bonix that the
national narrative has been the ineptitudes and focusing on that,
and there are rough patches to Bow's game, which is
to be expected out of a rookie.

Speaker 3 (23:12):
Totally. It wasn't that for me.

Speaker 1 (23:14):
The irritation is that everybody's like olled Ben hates Bonick.
I told you they were drafting Bonix, Like. I don't
hate Bonix at all. I like bon Nix. I just
don't think he's he's you know, I mean, this season
is about building him. He's not building yet. It's not
a finished product. We're going to see rough patches and
there are things in his game right now it does
look a ticktoo fast forward. He's definitely laid on the

(23:35):
checkdowns and the swing passes out to the flats and
it's killing me. There have been some arm strength issues.
Remember the trick played to Josh, Rene'll tell you to
slow up for in fairness. Sorry, Franklin didn't have to
slow up for anything, although he probably should have slowed
up and checked his hands before he put him out
there to not make the reception on that play. I
think that Bonix grows every game. I just don't like
the do you bo leave all the hype and all

(23:57):
that kind of stuff. I'm not trying to take joy
away from the fans. I'm just trying to be realistic
about where he is right now versus where he could be.

Speaker 3 (24:03):
I hope that he turns into that.

Speaker 1 (24:05):
People lamb basted me for comparing him to Derek Carr
when he came out.

Speaker 2 (24:09):
That was kind of my prospect comparison.

Speaker 5 (24:10):
It's solid, I mean kind of you know, the better mobility, way,
better movement, but in terms of like the the throwing,
I think.

Speaker 3 (24:17):
Willing to use the mobility.

Speaker 1 (24:18):
Derek Carr was a four to six forty guy like fairfair,
you know, like as far as that kind of stuff go.
Bose just more willing to use the legs to go
to go get stuff, which I appreciate and like. And
I really the moment for me that I really was like, Okay,
I'm hoping that this kid does become That was this
past week when I saw John with Sean Payton on
the sideline.

Speaker 3 (24:37):
Giving it back. Because the one thing last.

Speaker 1 (24:39):
Year that really bothered me, it wasn't Sean Payton yelling
at Russ, it was that Russ just sat there and
took it shriveled.

Speaker 3 (24:46):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (24:47):
And I'm like, bro, you got to explain your thought process.
You're a live fire in the middle of the game.
You got to explain your thought process to the coach.
You have to come out and defend yourself on that
or be like, hey, look I'm wrong.

Speaker 3 (24:56):
I was sorry.

Speaker 1 (24:56):
I'm gonna go aheta. You have to say something. You
can't just sit there and ducked down at your pads
like that.

Speaker 3 (25:01):
And he did.

Speaker 1 (25:02):
And you know, Russ is gonna wind up being the
starter for the Steelers here as soon as he's healthy.

Speaker 2 (25:06):
But you know, and I liked Russ. I thought there
were several.

Speaker 1 (25:09):
Things that weren't his fault that he got blamed for.
I'm hoping that he has success with the Steelers. But
the moment for me with Bonix that the that's the
one was watching him give it back to Sean Payton
and then if you keep watching that click you can
also see Sean Payton turning around and kind of walking
after him on the sideline.

Speaker 3 (25:28):
But it wasn't in anger.

Speaker 1 (25:29):
It was like, hey, come back here, I want to
finish this conversation. And I you know, that was the
moment I'm like, Okay, all right, I'm in.

Speaker 3 (25:38):
I like it.

Speaker 5 (25:38):
And then the Derek Carr thing, I don't think people
should view that as a knock. I think people will
look at Carr's career and he settled in the metal
middle of quarterbacks typically, but he's not all that. The
things that are holding him back ard he struggles with pressure,
he gets in his head at times. It's not he's
physically incapable of being this elite quarterback, he said. I mean,
we saw the first two weeks of this season. He
had a couple of stretches with Cruden and in Las

(26:00):
Vegas where, you know, early October we're talking about could
car be an MVP candidate, and you know he would
tend to shrivel up to reuse that word, but I
don't think that means that Nix is going to be that.
But in terms of physical ability, I like that comp
a lot. Yeah, it's good to see that he's got that,
I don't know, that dog in him, for kind of
a better word, some grit, some some willingness to hang

(26:22):
in there and stand up for himself. You're going to
have to have that with Sean Payton, someone who is,
you know, such a strong personality, to maybe put it kindly,
You're going to have to have some fire in your
belly to go up against that. And it's good to
see that Nicks actually has that. And you look at
the guys who've played under Sean Payton. Tron Armstead tweeting out,

(26:43):
you know quote tweeting that moment and going, I just
know that Bonix became Sean Payton's favorite player. He likes
so pushback, and other coaches that have worked under Sean
Payton made similar comments to what Tron Armstead said. I
heard Chase Daniels making similar comments to what Sharon Armstead said.
When it's that universal, I it I think Sean Payton
wants some pushback. I want I think to your point,

(27:03):
he wants someone that has an opinion, believes that what
they did was the right thing and is going to
stand on that. And hey, if we argue it out
and I end up being wrong, so be it. But
I'm going to stand on my business.

Speaker 2 (27:13):
Yeah, and you should.

Speaker 1 (27:14):
You should be able to delineate what your thought process was.
You know, you're in live fire. It's going to be
heated sometimes.

Speaker 3 (27:19):
I get that. I've seen that.

Speaker 1 (27:21):
The thing about it is if you're not able to
delineate your thought process and communicate back and forth, and
you're not going to get any better. As you know,
We've seen the greats be able to do that. I've
seen Peyton Manning, John at coaches. We saw certainly seen
Tom Brady on it different coaches. We saw Ridy Gannon
and John Gruden get into it, you.

Speaker 3 (27:36):
Know, and then Saturday that thing as it whipped.

Speaker 1 (27:38):
Yeah, that's a little bit different with as a team,
but it's the head coach sort of aspect of it.

Speaker 3 (27:42):
I appreciate.

Speaker 1 (27:42):
The other thing about this is you're right on the
Derek car I think people sell Derek Carr short for
his career. Derek Carr is in the top twenty six,
twenty five. He's twenty fifth I think all time, and
passing touchdowns twenty.

Speaker 3 (27:53):
Fifth all time, and I think touchdowns in Tony Romo.

Speaker 5 (27:56):
And that's with him getting in his own way a lot.
I think to my point, mental blocks that I don't
think we've seen Nicks have that that could make you
think this is a better version of Derek car He's
got the physical ability to cash those checks the Cars writing,
but maybe not having the same mental hiccups. And as
far as you know, are we declaring this is the guy?

(28:16):
Do we think the Broncos have the guy? Yet it's
just way, way, way, way way too early, or that
you look at I think best case scenario Broncos Country,
just imagine, best case scenario for this season is probably
you know, bo Nick's playing like a good game manager,
offense being you know, functional, probably not great, but functional
defense remains elite, and maybe you sneak into a wild
card spot that's identical to Mac Jones's rookie season and

(28:38):
before his rookie contract is up. Even he's a backup
quarterback for the Jacksonville Jaguars for Trevor Lawrence, who was
in that same draft class.

Speaker 3 (28:45):
We do not know. We won't know for a while
it is.

Speaker 5 (28:49):
I think you know fairly quickly if a guy just
straight up doesn't have it, or maybe if they're going
to be something very very special. I think that presents
itself fairly quickly. Like I think this was our first
big debate. I think after twenty twenty you knew on
Drew Locke he wasn't going to be it. Oh yeah,
there's plenty of guys that, after you know, a year
or two of starting, looked like the guy and end

(29:10):
up not being the guy.

Speaker 4 (29:11):
Yea.

Speaker 5 (29:12):
So far Bnix is on the right track. It's going
in the right direction. I think you would agree with
that too.

Speaker 3 (29:17):
I think it's trending upwards enough.

Speaker 1 (29:19):
But if that doesn't necessarily mean that he's going to
be great, it doesn't even mean he's going to be
long term starter.

Speaker 3 (29:23):
But it's trending in.

Speaker 1 (29:24):
The right direction right now, and I'm open to the
possibility that the player he is and the player he
could be could be.

Speaker 3 (29:29):
Yeah, no idea how high it's going to rise.

Speaker 2 (29:31):
I think the thing that gets me most excited.

Speaker 5 (29:34):
With BO though, is seeing how he is continuously improving.
I think that's because with again not to keep going
back to lock, but with Locke.

Speaker 3 (29:43):
My biggest issue was I felt.

Speaker 5 (29:45):
Like he was the same guy, you know, after one
year of starting in Denver that he was after his
first year of starting at the Zoo. You know, you
watch him in the Giants preseason and he's still making
the same interception mistakes he was making in Denver. Bo
Nicks one thing that I wasn't high him as a prospect,
But one thing I liked is this guy's grown more
than any other any of these other quarterbacks in the draft,

(30:06):
from how low it was in Auburn to how high
it became in Oregon. And I think he's shown that
throughout every other step in the process. I wasn't there
for rookie mini camp, but I know it was apparently
ugly from the reports I saw training camp.

Speaker 3 (30:18):
I thought it was fine, was serviceable.

Speaker 5 (30:20):
One of the better Broncos quarterback training camps i've seen,
you know, preseason game. First preseason game, we had the
film junkies and Tim Jenkins and the like breaking down
the footwork and how there was concerning footwork. What do
you see the next week? Much better footwork And I
think you've seen that throughout the regular season as well.
That's what gets me the most optimistic about Bonnix because
all these guys have to continue to grow and evolve

(30:42):
as the defense takes away, you know, their fastball, and that's.

Speaker 1 (30:47):
That's what being a quarterback in this league is about,
is finding the things that you're not good at and
finding ways to improve those things and continuing to evolve.
The thing that excited me I think about Bonicks during
training camp in the preseason was the fact that you
know that he didn't seem to make the same mistakes
a lot, you know, I mean, or if he did,
it wasn't very many times, you know, and then he
would kind of.

Speaker 2 (31:06):
It clicks for him after a while.

Speaker 1 (31:07):
So just hope that that the game will slow down
for him, it'll click for him, and he'll be able
to continue to evolve and eventually become the guy.

Speaker 2 (31:14):
That he needs.

Speaker 1 (31:14):
I got a little frustrated with the over the top
just I mean, it was it was sort of odd
the positivity about bon Nicks in the preseason.

Speaker 2 (31:26):
Well, this guy's whipping balls behind his receivers.

Speaker 1 (31:28):
This is the foot work's a little slow, the ball
flutters on him a little bit, Like, we don't need
to be this effusive right now, because it's doing a
disservice to the fans. We're going to see in the
first quarter of the season this guy's not ready, and
then they're going to be disappointed in him, you know.
And so for me, that was the direction I was
coming from with With coverage of that, I got pushed
back from everybody, including you know, Ryan who who you know?

(31:49):
We you and I think are a little which is fun.
But for me, I'm not down on Bonnicks per se.
I'm trying to be realistic about the moment hopeful about
the future at the same time. And you know, I
don't know, Zach, I'm looking forward to to you joining
the team here. Obviously we're gonna have you back for
the six pack and uh looking forward to that. We
