Speaker 1 (00:00):
I'll see what we got here. It's a whole bunch
(00:02):
of these book marks. Will give me a second here,
No mo Toto, we're playing the Toto. We're playing the Uh,
we're playing the Toto. Grant Smith's in charge of the
jams here. Don't tell me what to do text line,
We're gonna play more Toto. Someone night is rabel a
logical choice for replace Andy Reid when the time comes.
It's too far down the road. I don't I'm not
(00:24):
trying to get into that. I think he's certainly comfortable
where he is. Five ur one, Where do you guys
think Mike McDaniel is next year, Probably back with Kyle
shanahaning in some capacity. We'll see squat to the Kawait Comas.
Speaker 2 (00:37):
Broth hotline and bring on our guy.
Speaker 1 (00:40):
Adam Scheffer sounded like Cody Roarke maybe Adam Schefter' and
Cody Roarke sounded like, I'm not sure, Cody, how.
Speaker 2 (00:45):
You doing, buddy?
Speaker 3 (00:46):
Sound good friend, I'll do it all right.
Speaker 1 (00:49):
A lot of questions coming in here about Sean Payton,
and I think the fan base is starting to ask
questions about Sean Payton.
Speaker 4 (00:58):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (00:58):
Several we've had multiple thing asking about, you know, him
turning over play calling, which is not gonna happen.
Speaker 2 (01:03):
I mean, Sean Payt's not turning over play class just
not a thing he's gonna do. But people are starting
to question that.
Speaker 1 (01:08):
And I don't know if that's a byproduct of just
this Jets debacle, of which we found will end up
winning and we're four and two or what. What What
is your current opinion on the state of Sean Payton
as head coach of the Denver Broncos.
Speaker 3 (01:23):
Yeah, you know, I think I think it's a valid
I think fans have a reason to be concerned, right,
I mean, three years we've been waiting for the offense
to take off, and they've had glimpses, but it's been
so inconsistent, man. And I think the thing that stands
out about Sean here is that there's stuff that works.
Like in the first half bow Nick's the quick passing game.
They were in rhythm there, you know, at first half
(01:43):
against the Jets, and then the second half it just
seems like they were trying more longer, developing plays, which
didn't necessarily make sense when he had Matt Parret who
was struggling and there's a lot of interior pressure happening.
I mean, the Jets defensive line, their front is pretty good.
They have really good players there, but it just seems
like they away from what works, and I think they'd
never have a chance to establish a lot of rhythm.
(02:04):
And I think that's where fans are the most frustrated,
just because they'll get the run game going at one
point and then somebody will come in and then there'll
be somebody. You know, it'll be a different guy getting
the ball. Like for example, I say on Sunday, JK
had like a six or seven yard rush on one play,
Bik was second down. On the next play he comes
out and it's like, all right, well he just got
six or seven yards. He's got some rhythm, like stick
(02:24):
with it. It just seems like the mass substitutions of
personnel there's a place for it, but I don't think
it should be at the expense of ruining the flow
and rhythm of your game.
Speaker 1 (02:33):
Well right, And I think that was part of my
problem is for a couple of games there, Sean Payton
was doing the right thing, leaving guys in for a
couple of plays, give them series to get comfortable that
kind of stuff. He went back to old Sean Payton
there in London, and predictably, we see the result, and so,
you know, I get frustrated that kind of stuff, especially,
you know, and you talked about I talked about.
Speaker 2 (02:53):
Earlier the quick game. Quick game was definitely working, and then.
Speaker 1 (02:56):
Where all of a sudden we're like, well this is
one hundred percent working. We're going to table this and
we're gonna try all this other stuff that probably won't work,
super gadgety stuff. I got a tight end on a
running I've got lining up Marvin Mims in the backfield,
so the defense absolutely knows what's happening here. You know,
those guys of things. Before we get back to just
smart sound football. You don't have to be the smartest
(03:16):
guy in the room. If you have the most points,
you're going to be the smartest guy on the sideline
that day, and that's all that matters.
Speaker 3 (03:22):
Yeah, And look, I think I don't feel like at
times Sean feels like he's got to prove himself, which
I don't think he has to. Ben Like, we know
who Sean Payton is.
Speaker 2 (03:29):
We've seen what Sean can do.
Speaker 3 (03:30):
I think he's a great play designer. I think at
times he could be a great play caller. But the
biggest obstacle is Sean himself. He gets in his own
way and with those things you see that, like I
just the Jelil McLaughlin on third down, Like Jeeil doesn't
come in, like I think he has one cherry in
the game prior to the screenplay that they tried to
run to him. It's like that's kind of evident. It's
(03:52):
third down, third and something. Oh Joeil's in. All right,
Well we know he's not much of a guy who's
in on pass protection situation, and so they're seeing him
and that's like, all right, we're going to try to
design his funky looking screenplay. And I think the thing
that frustrates me as well is there's times where Sean
gets a little too cute and fancy when it's like
third and long or second and long. It's like why not,
Like they're prepared, they're playing the sticks that they want
(04:13):
you to throw it short, they're taking away the deep stuff.
It just seems like he gets in his own way sometimes.
And I mean we've seen and I'll say this too,
like with Vance, like we've seen Sean on TV. We've
seen outside like chewing fans out. I mean, we can
assume that we've seen that on tape several times here.
But who's gonna choose Sean out when when the offense
(04:33):
is not going you know through the rhythm that they
should here. I mean that there's times where we look
to Bow. Bow looks like he's frustrating Sean at times,
and I don't know, it's just like, these are the
things that you can't have happened to you if you
have ambitions of being a playoff team, if you have
ambitions of hosting a playoff game, winning the division, winning
a Super Bowl, Like the things that they're doing right
now are just not sustainable offensively, especially when you have
(04:55):
a defense it's playing as incredibly well and sound as
they are right now in advance.
Speaker 2 (05:00):
Well, that's exactly where I was going with this next
talk with Cody Rourke.
Speaker 1 (05:03):
Is the defense put on a masterful clinic in London.
And it wasn't just because they were playing justin fields.
Who charitably is a UFL quarterback playing in the NFL.
Speaker 2 (05:14):
They were everywhere.
Speaker 1 (05:15):
You don't get negative ten net passing yards without putting
on an absolute clinic and they did nine sacks, they
were shutting down the run. Everything was just working for
the Broncos defense in that game. And you know, Vance
Joseph a guy who might be gone at the end
of the season for a head coaching gig if the
right one comes open, and you know, and he gets
a job. And at that point, I think people start
(05:38):
to worry about this this franchise, Like, Okay, the defense
has been carrying a lot of that has been Vance
Joseph and what he's done.
Speaker 2 (05:44):
What's next for this franchise.
Speaker 3 (05:47):
Well, think about it this way too. There's an opening
in Tennessee. Could Vance head over there and bring Davis
Web with him as a play caller? I mean, that's
always something I think we look at, like Advance does
get a serious interest for a head coaching guy. I'm
sure probably the first person he's going to call is Davis,
because hey, you know, you want chance to be a
play caller. I think Davis is brilliant. I know a
lot of fans want to call for a play caller
change here, but I mean, Ben, as you said, that's
(06:07):
never gonna happen. Under Sean, you know, Davis Web is
gonna leave at some point and go get an opportunity
with another team, and I think he's gonna do really well.
But to say, like if they change to Davis Web now,
would would it be flown with them? I don't know.
I mean I think, like I said, Sean is very
very smart, He's the brand, is behind the operation. But
I also think that, you know, maybe a young play
(06:29):
caller could benefit as well, Like why can't Sewn at
this point, you know, pass along and just continue to
expand his coach If you are saying, all right, Davis,
you're gonna call a place here, I'm just gonna manage
things all have maybe a final say or you know,
maybe override that depending on you know where you're at.
But why not a little bit at this point at
this joke, Sure, Sean's the super Bowl winning head coach,
it's one of the wines winning his coaches of all time.
(06:50):
What more does he have to prove? I'm he wants
to win a championship. He wants to be you know,
a coach that goes to another team wins another ring.
But man, you have you have the potential to have
a really impressive young team around you. Here they have
a window here, and I feel like they got to
maximize it and right now, I mean the offense, there's
valid questions every single week they look the same. They
get off to the slow starts, or if they get
(07:11):
off to a hot start, then they fizzle out quick.
What's the common denominator there? There's so much there, and
a lot of people want to blame Bowt Nicks, but
I felt like Boat wasn't the reason that they struggled
in yesterday's game.
Speaker 2 (07:21):
Yeah it wasn't.
Speaker 1 (07:22):
I mean, he wasn't, you know, agreed, there was a
couple of passes where he you know, he'd love to
have him back, but that dart over there on the
left hand side of the field. But they're you know,
I mean, for the most part, Boa was pretty effective
with doing what he was asked to do.
Speaker 2 (07:34):
In that game.
Speaker 3 (07:35):
You know.
Speaker 1 (07:35):
My thought on this is, if I'm Sean Payton and
I have this bugaboo about being predictable to the point
where I'm predictably unpredictable, you know, I might maybe we
have the script. Maybe I give Davis web the rest
of the first half and then I take over in
the second half, and then they then they really don't
know what's going on.
Speaker 3 (07:53):
You know.
Speaker 1 (07:53):
Yeah, you know, I don't think he'll do that because
I don't think he wants to be measured against his
protege very specifically. But you know, I think there's something
too being able to shake things up by giving some
members of your staff a couple of series to call plays,
you know, and come in and shit, and then then
that that eliminates the predictability of it all.
Speaker 3 (08:10):
Yeah, and look, I don't like I said, it all
goes back to Shan doesn't have to prove that he's
the smartest guy in the room. I think everyone knows
how smart a football mind he is. And I feel
like at times in games he does things at times
where it's like it's like to try to show it off,
but it doesn't work. You know. For example, it's you know,
you got these different you know, reads that you're running out.
I like that they've met of the RPO a little
bit more into the system. I think it's it's effective
(08:33):
for what they want to do here. But then it's
like you get tricky, you get like you know, the motion,
the end around the fake handoff, and then it's like, Okay,
I'm gonna throw a bubble right after that there, and
the defense is already you know, attacking, and now you're
getting tackled for a loss on second and thirteen as
is now it brings up like third and fifteen. It's
just the times where they bring certain things out. It
just doesn't make sense. And I understand so much of
(08:54):
this too. And this goes just beyond like what we see.
It's you know, defense comes out in a certain Lookay,
we think that we have it in here, but then
they might disguise a copboard's look and drop into something
different right as you know, at the snap, like the
game has played at a million miles an hour, I
just felt like this was a Jets team that this
Broncos team should have rolled over. And not to sound
like we're nitpicking, the defense was incredible. I think we're
(09:14):
all just disappointed in how the offense has looked. It
just has looked slow and discombobulated. I mean on a
week to week basis really outside of the Bengals game,
fourth quarter of the Eagles game like, and the first
half of the Colts game was pretty good. And then
aside from all that, the offense is just kind of
held off a little bit.
Speaker 2 (09:32):
Talking about Cody row Ark. Yeah, and that's sort of
the at the end of the day.
Speaker 1 (09:35):
That's that's the thing is, I think everybody just wants
some consistency. What is the identity of this football team?
And typically, you know, you talk to people who have
played or played under Shawan Payton before and they say that,
you know, Shawn tends to get in October before he
really has a handle on what he has.
Speaker 2 (09:48):
Well, we're in October. We're in the debt of October.
We've been in October a couple of weeks, and none
of us, I think, know what we have.
Speaker 1 (09:54):
And oh, by the way, now, all of a sudden,
we have a suddenly dangerous game coming up against the
New York Giants team probably everybody put down as a
Broncos dub to start the season suddenly has some energy
and some life to them. And you know, they're better
on defense than people think. The offense has got a
little bit of a spark. How dangerous is this is
a trap game with the New York Giants.
Speaker 3 (10:14):
I was a little more worried about this game than
I was the Jets game in London actually, just because
also the Giants that are gonna be well arrested. But
I mean ever since they made the switch from Russ
to Jackson Dart, they just have more energy, more slagger,
and you know, Jackson Dart, you know, this is a
guy who's gonna you know, obviously very athletic, scrambled Droll
is going to be a very important factor. He's gonna
look to run. You have to worry about his legs here.
(10:34):
And also he feeds off the energy of Cam Scataboo,
who scares me the way he plays. And I don't
know how sustainable it is for him to keep it
up the way he is. But you know, they've got life,
They've got energy here, and I feel like they're young
and dangerous team. You mentioned their defense. I mean that
defensive front. I mean Abdul Carter, Brian Burns, Keevon Tabodeau,
Dexter Lawrence. Only you have a really really good inside
linebacker and Bobby o'cara kay that I mean allowed that
(10:58):
defensive line in that pass rush allows him to play
freely and he just racks up tackles in the backfield.
I mean, he's going to be one of the most
dangerous players to go against. And they don't necessarily need
to have great corners or safeties because they have those
guys there that get to the quarterbacking. And the thing
that worried me the most just watching this game yesterday
is just seeing how the Jets have stunted, you know,
the offensive line for Denver. I look at what the
(11:20):
Giants did against the Eagles, and I'm like, they're going
to turn that up infold here, especially trying to attack
Rottenberg and obviously Matt Parrett, which you know, I don't
know if Pert's going to get another opportunity this week.
I imagine he will, but at least have to hope
that Denver's got another plan in place at this point.
I know they brought in our over friend Quinn Bailey
for a visit here today, so maybe there's something that
will materialize. But you can't continue this trend against this
(11:42):
Giants defense because it'll be a very rough day for
the offense if they play the way that they did
against the Jets.
Speaker 2 (11:47):
Yeah, that will talk about Cody Warrick the guard position.
Speaker 1 (11:50):
Something to keep your eye on here because I think Parton,
probably Throckmorton, will be splitting snaps this week as they
figure out, you know, which one of these guys, is
you kind of had to use part in London there, but.
Speaker 2 (12:00):
Now you kind of got an opportunity to take a look
at that.
Speaker 1 (12:01):
Maybe Quinn Bailey comes in and can do that as well.
But I don't, you know, everybody keeps asking the Broncos
is going to be big spenders here with the trade deadline.
I don't expect that. Everything I hear from these guys,
you know, internally is we're happy with what we got
and it's next man up. And I you know, maybe
if Rockport and Bailey all fizzle, then maybe you're going
down there and trying to quick rental lot of Trevor
(12:22):
Penning or something like that. But you know he hasn't
played appreciably well for New Orleans either.
Speaker 3 (12:28):
Yeah. No. And the crazy thing about it too, is
like even when the Broncos were one in five, and
even when they were struggling last couple of years and
Shawn's first couple of years of the team, they weren't
sellers at the trade deadline. They weren't fires at the
trade deadline, and when they had moments and opportunities maybe
where they should have. I believe that changing now, especially
when we hear George and Sean talks so much about
their player development and how their practice squad is really
(12:50):
an extension of their fifty three and the players that
they have in the practice squad they develop into guys
who co potentially play two or three years down the road,
and some of that might be accelerated here going forward.
But I think Rockborn is the easy piece. You know,
I've even thrown out maybe the idea. I know, you
could fly to Luke Wattenberg to gard I know he's
played there before, put foresight at the center, but I mean,
do you want to Rob Paul to pay Peter Tough?
(13:12):
You know how good were versus part No more guard
experience was more of a tackle before anything. But now
Sean views him as a left side guy. I no
fans have been wanting Alex Pouceski, but Palco's a right
side guy as well as Shawn is designated. So that's
going to be very interesting to see how everything kind
of plays out here. But it's a big week ahead here,
Ben and very curious see how this team responds getting
(13:34):
off the jet from London and then having to go
into meetings, treatment and obviously game prep and practice this
week against the team that's well rested in New York.
Speaker 1 (13:42):
Yeah, and then the other half of this, And I
mean no, absolutely no one has talked about this so far.
Speaker 2 (13:46):
The Jets, I mean, scuse me.
Speaker 1 (13:47):
The Giants are obviously coming off ten days rest, and
people are talking about that. The Broncos have been down
at sea level for how many weeks?
Speaker 3 (13:53):
Now?
Speaker 1 (13:54):
Being affiliate, being in London, you're coming back to altitude
after having been at sea level that long.
Speaker 2 (13:59):
The bio he does start to adjust after about two weeks,
it does.
Speaker 1 (14:02):
Uh, And so this team may be a little bit
more gassed than what we're than what we're normally used to.
Something to kind of keep your eye on against an
even fresher New York Giants team that you know it's
got ten days rest.
Speaker 3 (14:14):
Yeah. No, I think the defense, I think, if anything,
I think I'd be worried about the defense being a
little more gas than the offensive side of the ball.
But uh, yeah, yeah, I mean I just want to
you want to see this team obviously come up big.
I mean right now, the pace at the defense is
on in terms of sacks is incredible. But it's just
the offense. You know, you continue to go three and
out like Jeremy croush On will love to have been
the best special teams guys, but Denver special teams unit
(14:35):
certainly didn't help them out on Sunday. You can have
bad special teams play as well this upcoming week, especially
in the return game. You know, I look at the Giants,
they have very fast and athletic guys, and that's something
that worries me this week, especially seeing some of the
coverage issues that we saw. Very very curious. This is
a big test, a big game here this week. You know,
despite the record the Giants, they're in a very good
spot right now with dark as the as the starter.
Speaker 1 (14:58):
Well, I hope they don't hit the bulls eye. The
Broad did make a move on special teams today, signing
J T. Gray off the Ravens practice squad probably spells
the end for JT.
Speaker 2 (15:05):
Skinner.
Speaker 1 (15:06):
We'll see Jails Skinner, excuse me, We'll see how that
how that works out, Cody. Any final thoughts is uh,
as we performed the autopsy on this Jets thing and
turn the page to New York Giants.
Speaker 3 (15:16):
Yeah, the identity for this team is simple. All stick
with give JK series next year He's go RJ don't
don't don't split carries every other every other snap. I
think that's gonna be the key. You know, you have
a defense that can play smother and aggressive up controlled defense.
That's the formula for this team winning down the stretch
and winning a playoff game.
Speaker 2 (15:33):
I'm with you on that. Appreciate you taking some time, Cody,
see out there practice this week.
Speaker 3 (15:38):
Thank you so much. Appreciate you.
Speaker 1 (15:39):
Ben absolutely Cody rock roun Vil High Sports and always
enjoy get a chance to chat with him.
Speaker 2 (15:46):
Tend to agree.
Speaker 1 (15:46):
I mean, most of the things he said are the
things the same things I've been saying. I mean, we
were we were rocking with quick game early against the Jets,
and we just get away.
Speaker 2 (15:54):
From it for no apparent reason.
Speaker 1 (15:55):
We're we're we're back to doing these silly rotations with
the running backs that don't make any sense, you know,
in terms, and take your guys out of getting comfortable
and getting in a rhythm. And I don't know why
we're back to doing that. We saw how effective it
was doing it the right way, but you know, is
what it is. And of course he said the same
(16:18):
thing I said about Davis Webb, like Sean Payton didn't
give it up play calling, dude, It's like he's not
he's a head coach.
Speaker 2 (16:21):
He's just not gonna do that.
Speaker 1 (16:22):
Ever, anything that would in any way diminish the perception
of his legacy is not going to happen. So you know,
we can put that on the back burner and just
hope that he kind of sort of gets his act
together a little bit on some of this stuff down
the stretch once we get in October, November, December, Ruby
b when we come back Broncos Country tonight.
Speaker 2 (16:44):
But it's the KWAE conmis art of the hotline here
in just a second. But I have to say that.
Speaker 1 (16:49):
Our next guest may not have realized that she was
the good luck behind Colorado football, but we we did
the research, we did the math, we did all the calculus,
and every major Colorado football team, with the exception of
Air Force Academy, who was robbed with thirty six seconds
to go one this weekend or this week after, our
(17:13):
next guest dropped this quote on the air.
Speaker 5 (17:15):
You know, heart one out And with that we'll.
Speaker 1 (17:18):
Go to the KWA Comas Real Hotline and bring on
from CBS romy Bean Roby, how does it feel to
be the fark slash good luck charm for Colorado football.
Speaker 5 (17:28):
You know, I feel like I've worked so hard to
establish my name, you know, in this industry, and who
knew That's all it took, just just an honest brain heart.
Speaker 1 (17:40):
We're all within in this week out Yeah after she said,
I mean, it was ridiculous. We had North Colorado beating
Io Idaho. We had mines coming out and uh and
when who did they beat? I can't remember now. Minees
beat was a South Dakota mines.
Speaker 3 (17:55):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (17:56):
We had you see, Pueblo came out and beat up
on uh, well up on Tim Lewis's, Tim Jenkins's alma mater,
Fort Lewis College.
Speaker 2 (18:03):
But you know, we else I'll see you CSU win.
Speaker 1 (18:05):
The Broncos will charitably call that a win over the
Jets and what was one of the weirdest London games yet?
Speaker 2 (18:11):
How did you feel about that game against the Jets?
Speaker 5 (18:15):
You know, I feel like if I was a European
trying to decide if I was going to get into
the NFL or not, I'd probably say no, I'll pass
thanks next time, no, thank you. It was not okay.
I'll say it this way. One third fantastic two thirds
nets so much right, the defense was sensational. There's not
enough you know, superlatives in words to describe their performance.
(18:38):
The other two thirds offense and special teams, left much
to be desired, and you know, offensively, I think it's
just just the same thing, this lack of consistent consistency,
this lack of ability to stick with what works, you know.
I think the thing that maybe disappointed me most then
was the week beforeward. You saw this great aha moment
where I let JK have a series, I let our
(18:59):
j have it, and then we went away from that,
you know, and so we keep talking about more consistency
on the offense and you're kind of not seeing that.
So that certainly felt frustrating. It's easier, though, you could
always say to go back and to kind of work
on all that after a win, most certainly than then
after a loss. And that defense again is it's such
a good defense you can't waste it. Well, you get
(19:21):
things together on the other pieces, because you can't waste
his defense, right absolutely.
Speaker 1 (19:24):
Talking with Robby Bean from CBS, Yeah, that's sort of
the thing. I mean, there's there's a frustration here that
the offense despite showing life against the lifeless Bengals defense
otherwise has not been very effective most of this season,
and there's starting to be a frustration setting in as
fans are like, all right, this is year three of
Sean Payton, when an't we going to see the genius?
But at the same time, they're winning football games, Like
how you know, let's say, it's difficult to sit there
(19:46):
and be too nitpicky when you're winning games.
Speaker 5 (19:49):
One thousand percent at the end of the day. And
the guys will keep saying it, and it's hard to
argue with him when they say it's hard to win
in this league. It is hard to win in this league.
I think that they're at a point right now where
where the momentum is so good and the defense takes
a lot of pride in saying, hey, right, they we
got you right. No matter what happens, the defense knows
they can flat out win games for this football team.
(20:12):
I think where you have to get concerned, you can
go back to like the Super Bowl fifty season, and
it wasn't different right that offense limpd its way to
the finish line. The defense said, you know, don't worry,
we got to the following year, you saw the defense
get tired of having to hold so much weight all
the time. Now, I think when you look at where
this team is, it's more that, you know, twenty fourteen
(20:34):
twenty fifteen, not twenty sixteen in the sense of I
don't think there's any frustrations. I don't think the defense
feels like, oh my gosh, we're holding up wait, you know,
way more than we should. I think that there's still
a lot of harmony. This team has each other's back,
as good vibes, all of that, et cetera, et cetera.
So to your point, you're winning football games. Are there
(20:54):
things that you can nitpick that our concerning offensively and
special teams? Absolutely, but you're finding ways to win and
you have a defense that I mean, I've said this,
I think a lot of people have said this. They're
just going to keep the Broncos in games all year.
You would just like to see more consistency. You would
like to see that they don't have to be bailed
out by the defense all the time.
Speaker 2 (21:15):
Dolly Roby Bean from CBS.
Speaker 1 (21:17):
Matt Pert in there for Ben Powers and his absence
was notable. Pert picked up two or three flags two
really backbreaking flags. Another one that was they were able
to overcome the idea that they may split some time
and practice reps with Calvin Throckmorton this week to bring
in Quinn Bailey for a look as we as we
look at this, could this left guard thing be a
(21:37):
big problem for this team going forward?
Speaker 5 (21:40):
Yeah, I mean this is one of the funny you
asked me last week, and I'm like, well, you know,
we'll see next man. But I think of all the
position groups, the worst one to see guys go down
is on the line. It feels like that is where
you see just such a significant drop offs and it's
the one where you know, the chemistry to continuity, all
of those things make such a big diference, and it
(22:01):
often feels like when it comes to line play, the
backups they can fill in admirably, perhaps, but it never
feels like there's one that just flots right in and man,
I didn't even notice that the starter was missing. So
they're gonna have to play around with it, as you said,
and see if maybe th Rockmorton can provide a little
more help there. And you know what, you just you
have to find a way. You have to scheme up
(22:23):
and yeah, I don't you know, they're going to have
to find a way to overcome it because it is
certainly a lot and you got to play through it.
Speaker 1 (22:31):
I'm about a shape of the Jets in with Justin
Fields back there at quarterback. I mean, they looked absolutely terrible.
He looked terrible. It was interesting last season there was
kind of a groundswell for him because the Steelers were
winning games, but the reality was it wasn't because the
offense and Russ Wilson comes in end he immediately gets benched.
Justin Fields does and the Steelers offense took off. Did
(22:51):
Darren Moojie make a mistake paying twenty million dollars a
year to Justin Fields?
Speaker 5 (22:56):
Yeah, I think he might have. I mean, I think
playing quarterback in the NFL, first of all, there's a
reason why there's only thirty two starters, and you could
argue that not all thirty two are are starters. And
I think that there's always coaches and gms that believe
I can fix that guy, he can do better in
my system. And we certainly see that a lah Daniel Jones,
(23:16):
Baker Mayfield guys get in the better situation and they thrive,
but I don't think that justin Field is one of that.
Ilk And two, the Jets are not really a very
functional team as a whole in general. There's kind of
so it's a bad situation because I think you have
a quarterback that's not really a starter and not a
great situation that you're putting it in either, and that
(23:38):
kind of spells disaster.
Speaker 1 (23:40):
Yeah, that it did. Talk with Roby Bene from CBS.
We look forward to the Giants coming to town next.
The Broncos have been down at sea level for over
two weeks and that may you know, that does change
you physiologically a little bit.
Speaker 2 (23:52):
You get used to acclimated to being a sea level
rather than a mile high.
Speaker 1 (23:55):
The Giants have had ten days of rest, say or
will have had ten days of rest since their last game.
Speaker 3 (24:00):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (24:01):
Jaz's playing with some energy with Jackson, dark Camp Scatti
ball there on offense, and their defense is vastly underrated
with the players that they have.
Speaker 2 (24:09):
Is this potentially a trap game for the Broncos?
Speaker 5 (24:12):
You know, it's so interesting when when you look at
this game, because I think this is a totally different
Giants team than it was just a few weeks ago
and this kind of youth movement with Dart and with Cam.
I mean, they have re energized them. They're just they're
playing with energy, with juice, with excitement. Can't kataboo. I
don't know how long this young man's career is going
to last, but boy, boy is it fun. He's just
(24:33):
an easy guy to root for and he's hard to
take down. You know, he's litterally, he's kind of got
like a low target area. I've heard Dave Logan talk
about that with R. J. Harvey a little bit, that
he's hard to bring down, right, And so I think
that's that's going to be a fun challenge. I think
for the Broncos with Jackson Dart, you gotta pet him in.
You know he can he can hurt you with his
legs certainly, So I think that's that's the key to
(24:55):
that is I want to keep him in the pocket.
And the Broncos passed us says certainly shown that they
can do that and then some So I feel like
this could be ben a pretty low scoring game. You
mentioned the defense, and that is the defense that I
think is not getting enough credit. I think even the
Jets defense not even getting total full credit for their
(25:16):
pretty solid unit. But the Giants are a better unit,
and they've got some big guys up front. They've got
some dangerous guys up front. They've got some fast guys
up front. So this is going to be yet another
test for the offense and another reason why go back
to what works. The quick game was really working really
well in London. Excuse me, So go back to what
works and don't get too cute. Don't get too cute,
(25:39):
because I think this could be another low scoring affair.
So stick with the quick game, give the running backs
their sets, and drive down the field get some points,
because I don't think it's the defense that you should
get too cute on.
Speaker 1 (25:52):
I'm with you talking with romy Bean from CBS, I'm
with you on that. And I think the last question
I have with the Broncos before I get this SEU
see as you stuff here, is how long can the
offense go without hitting some level, some baseline level of
consistency of you know, showing that it can be counted on,
(26:15):
before this fan base starts to really worry.
Speaker 5 (26:18):
Yeah, you know, that's a great question. I think that
we go back to the beginning of the season and
these lofty, these super Bowl talks and all of this,
I think it put a little bit of undue pressure
on Bonnix and maybe not the rest of the offense,
but uncertainly on the scene. The defense is certainly answering
the bell. But I think that going into this season
(26:39):
that choosing to project that out of this is a
super Bowl team, the fans have now come in with
those expectations.
Speaker 3 (26:46):
You set that bar.
Speaker 5 (26:46):
So now you've got to kind of start answering the bell.
And I think that it's this offense and special teams
can improve incrementally week by week. Just a little more
consistency week by week, show that you are, you know,
doing the proverbial peaking at the right time. I think
that that'll be okay, that'll be good enough for the fans.
But you've got to see a little more each week,
(27:08):
and so far you haven't really right, you haven't seen
necessarily more consistency or a full sixty minutes, as we
like to say. So you got to show a little
more than that. You got to be able to sustain drives.
You can't have third quarter with no passing yards. You
can't have you know, scoreless third quarters. So you got
to do. It's not monumental things in my mind then
(27:29):
it's it's little things. You just got to show a
little bit of improvement week by week, and I think,
and you're winning, so gonna keep the fans out.
Speaker 1 (27:36):
Me that it will U You know a program is
showing a little incremental improvement week by week? Is the
cu bus Suddenly three and four they knock off number
twenty two Iowa State. I was a little weirded out
by the rushing the field. I don't know why we're
rushing the field against an Iowa State team that lost
the previous week to Cincinnati, But you know who am
I to gatekeep fandom?
Speaker 2 (27:55):
I guess at the end.
Speaker 1 (27:56):
Of the day, though, Kayden Stalter played a pretty clean game.
You know, see you all of a sudden is playing
with a little bit of intensity, playing with a little
bit of fire. You look at this three and four,
It could be a little bit better than that if
they've done some other things in somebody's other games.
Speaker 2 (28:10):
Are we underrating the Colorado Buffaloes?
Speaker 5 (28:13):
Well, first of all, I'm with you on the rushing
the field. We've been having a big heated debate in
the sports office about this and I'm like, now, like
act like you've been there. You don't get to rush
the field a few beat a questionably ranked I with
state team. I'm with you on that though. It is
very split, very split in our sports office. But yeah,
I think this was, you know, I say a season
(28:34):
saving win in the sense of that sounds more dramatic
than it is. But in this day and age of
nil and the portal, I think if that was a
game that CU had lost and then you drop, then
all of a sudden, I think I start checking out,
and guys start looking out where am I going to
go next? And so this was a really crucial win
for this bus team in regards to they had kind
(28:55):
of continuously been saying we're close, we're close, We're close,
a lot of things that we've heard the Bronx to say,
you know in the past, we've got to learn how
to finish. That was There was so much frustration after
that TCU game, the guys that we spoke to after
the game, I mean visible, visceral frustration, and to see
them put that into action find a way to finish
(29:16):
this is really momentous in a way for this team
that's still looking for their identity that has starting to
come on in different ways. You know, you see young
guys that Quinton Gibson makes mistakes. The TCU game bounces
back in this game, Amaron Miller guy finally thanks to
see him getting the end zone a little bit. So
I think there's there is actually more talent on this
(29:38):
CU team, and it's just taken a while for them
to get to get kind of come together. The heart
is the hard thing about that is the collegetable season
is short, but you're still in a chance now if
you can ride this momentum. It's tough that you have
a bye week now, that's not ideal, but certainly it's
starting to come together a little bit. So we'll see
if they can build on it.
Speaker 1 (29:57):
Yeah, maybe not ideal, but certainly interesting. Right before you
have to go play at Utah, probably the toughest game
on your schedule all year, and there's really been a
bugaboo for see you for a while.
Speaker 2 (30:09):
You look at this.
Speaker 1 (30:09):
I mean they've been in every game outside of that
Houston game. Really, they've been in just about every game
that they've played this year. This might be the toughest
test you think, if you know they pull this off,
get back to five hundred. Who knows what happens after that.
You got four games down the stretch that they're fairly winnable.
Speaker 5 (30:25):
Oh, I mean, you look down the stretch Arizona, you know,
West Virginia. There's a lot more winnable games towards.
Speaker 3 (30:30):
The end of the season.
Speaker 5 (30:31):
I completely agree with you with the Utah game. And
this is going to be a test of the physicality,
and that's somewhere where you know, the offensive line of
Seed has been really really strong. Defensively, they struggled a
little bit, you know, kind of at the line of scrimmage.
So this is going to be a big litmus test
for them in terms of kind of how they handle
the physicality. Youth has always kind of out physicaled them,
(30:52):
doesn't really matter what iteration or in recent years at
least right or which coach it was. So this is
the one that you can get over this. This is
this is a big momentum boost kind of a win.
And I think for Caden Salter, his confidence has most
certainly been shaky, and so what you saw in Iowa
State was a kid who seemed to kind of settle
in and start to feel more comfortable and in himself,
(31:15):
So I think another win certainly builds on his confidence.
And as we always say, right as the quarterback goes,
the team goes. They need Salter to be confident, so
he needs to have a good performance.
Speaker 1 (31:25):
Any other surprise game over the weekend, Colorado State putting
it to Fresno State forty nine to twenty one. It's
kind of a bit of a breakout game for Brisill
a little bit, and they got the ground game going
pretty well, and they have saved Jane Norville's job at
least in the interim for now. What can we expect
that of Colorado State going forward as well?
Speaker 5 (31:46):
Yeah, they had a lot of injured guys as well,
and the seat is scorching hot. It's almost it's almost
Mike McDaniel, Briankaala has a level hot there for Jane Norvel.
Speaker 3 (31:57):
So it is every week.
Speaker 5 (31:59):
I think that was kind of a breath. He kind
of saved himself another week. They're going into the PAC
twelve next year, and you feel like most certainly, you
know the ad in that administration wants to go in
really strong and in regards to recruiting and everything, so
Jennerville most certainly has to build on this. It can't
just be a one time thing. And if it is,
(32:19):
then you know, we'll see how far he gets. There's
another Bie week later in the year. So I feel
like we're certainly on Norvell watch up there.
Speaker 2 (32:26):
Yeah, that we are, you know, Before I let you go,
last question.
Speaker 1 (32:29):
Are we severely underrating that we have probably one of
the best name football players up there at Colorado State
and Rocky Beers.
Speaker 5 (32:36):
So that's a solid one. You know, he made the
they always make, like the all name list. He made
that list a couple of times. That's especially being in
the right you know. I don't know how course hasn't
jumped on this.
Speaker 1 (32:46):
Yeah, I mean especially with a kid that says, a
homegrown kid from Littleton. So this is this one of
those things. He got away to FIU for a couple
of years, came back, and how do we let Rocky
Beers get out of Colorado?
Speaker 5 (32:56):
I don't know. Honestly, sounds something that's an nil dealer
waiting after.
Speaker 2 (33:03):
Yeah, it sounds to me like an I csu farted
one out there.
Speaker 5 (33:06):
So we'll see how now part one out.
Speaker 3 (33:10):
Robie.
Speaker 1 (33:11):
I appreciate you letting guess get a ton of mileage
out of that. We appreciate you coming on as.
Speaker 4 (33:15):
Always do the best. Thanks for having me, all right,
take care. Roy Bean from CBS, uh we come back.
Lance Sanderson from My Allie, Huddle's gonna join us. We'll
put it autopsy and put the Jets game to bed,
turn the page to the New York Giants.
Speaker 2 (33:26):
You listen to Broncos country tonight right here on. Can't
wa
