Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hall of Famer Steve Atwater back from across the pond
after the Broncos big win, albeit ugly win over the
Jets thirteen eleven, Steve, how are you, man, Hey.

Speaker 2 (00:09):
I'm doing great.

Speaker 3 (00:10):
And just so everybody knows, we'll take an ugly win
over pretty loss any.

Speaker 4 (00:16):
Day, and he did, We'll take an ugly win over
beautiful loans.

Speaker 2 (00:21):
I completely agree.

Speaker 1 (00:22):
From ten ten weeks from now, no one's going to
care how they won.

Speaker 2 (00:26):
Just that they won.

Speaker 1 (00:27):
Four and two start for the Broncos is pretty sweet
to hear after these last couple of years in Broncos country.

Speaker 3 (00:33):
Yeah, and I think the fans, you know, were expecting
that they were well, they were expecting more than this
at this this particular game. But at the start of
the year, I think that if you would have told
our fan base that hey, we'll be four and two,
I think everybody would be like, all right, we're good.

Speaker 1 (00:50):
We're in good position four and two with the real
potential to be six and oh. I mean the two
losses were heartbreakers. It could have easily been wins. So
I mean, you're looking at the Bronco right now. You
beat the defending Super Bowl champs, you go over across
the pond and take care of business, and you're sitting
at four and two. Kind to top the AFC West
with the Chargers who have a lot more injury problems

(01:11):
than we do. Of course, we heard more bad news
for the Broncos left guard situation per Mike Cliss earlier today.

Speaker 2 (01:18):
Matt Pert going on the IR as well. So that'll
be interesting to see how they are important. Ye, but Nick,
what do you do with the Broncos offensive line?

Speaker 4 (01:29):
Now, well, here's a great thing about it that you
have four other guys who have been mainstays for the past.

Speaker 2 (01:36):
Couple of years.

Speaker 5 (01:37):
You lean on that and knowing.

Speaker 4 (01:39):
As though you look at that left guard position, look
at the Jets game and say, Matt Parrot has some issues.
He had a couple of penalties that stalled some drives,
some catches to I believe Colly said Marvin Maams. And
you don't want to have a repeat of that. So
understand where your weak points are. And that means if
you're going to run the ball, you're not running ball

(02:00):
behind that left guard.

Speaker 5 (02:02):
You're running the ball maybe behind maybe a Quinn Minors.

Speaker 4 (02:06):
Now, I will say, because you know you are weak
at that guard position, you could pull him and get
him out sometimes to make things easier for him to
get identified the blockers. He has an opportunity to drive
guys off the ball. But the one thing you don't
want to do to constantly put who whatever's going to
be in that position in passing situations.

Speaker 5 (02:27):
And that's what happens with against the Jets.

Speaker 4 (02:29):
When you constantly put your offensive line in passing situations,
you're not.

Speaker 5 (02:32):
Playing to their skill set.

Speaker 4 (02:34):
Those offensive linemen, they want to fire off, they want
to punch people in the face. But when you get
into those third and long situations, now you really have
to kind of change your play calling so that guard,
that left guard is not a problem for you.

Speaker 2 (02:46):
Let me ask this question.

Speaker 4 (02:47):
Though.

Speaker 2 (02:49):
We gave the rest of the team the preseason.

Speaker 4 (02:52):
In three or four games, they said, Hey, they're just
gonna take him a while to get.

Speaker 2 (02:57):
Up to speed. He hadn't been playing.

Speaker 1 (03:00):
Yeah, and apparently according to Mike Cliss, he got hurt
on the third play of the game. Wow, So he
played the entire game hurt, just like Ben Powers the
week before. I mean, these offensive linemen.

Speaker 5 (03:12):
So what does that tell you that that is symbolic? Right?

Speaker 4 (03:16):
Because The Broncos have been known for having depth and
more teams. More often than not, they keep more offensive
linemen for this purpose than they keep skilled players. So
to know that Ben Powers was injured but he had
to play through it, Matt Parrot is reserved substitute, was injured,
he had to play through it, that means that the

(03:38):
Broncos have very limited options or guys who they feels
as though they can depend on that play that guard position.

Speaker 5 (03:45):
That that's what it's telling me.

Speaker 4 (03:46):
Do you think that the team knew or do you
think he was He waited to the end of the games.

Speaker 2 (03:50):
Hey man, look man, I've been playing this whole game.

Speaker 5 (03:52):
Hurt.

Speaker 4 (03:52):
Well see, I'll say, well, maybe they were aware of it,
but they probably didn't know the magnitude because when I
played in game and they asked me, and I knew
I was.

Speaker 2 (04:04):
Right.

Speaker 5 (04:05):
So I wasn't hurt.

Speaker 4 (04:07):
I wasn't hurt. I was injured. And Mike shanny hand
never said a word. Only thing he does he just
looks at you, right, He just he just looked and
I gave him the thumbs up, and my brain was like,
what the hell are you telling him?

Speaker 2 (04:21):
You do.

Speaker 4 (04:23):
Around?

Speaker 5 (04:23):
Yes, I said, oh, coach. I'm good, I'm good. Hey,
give me the men's one of the men's coming. That's
exactly how it is.

Speaker 4 (04:33):
And as players, you know how job security is because
you have to be available. You don't want to really
give up that position. But you start to think and
when I have to go back and I watch the
game of Ben Powers and Matt Parrott where you have
to tell the team, you know what, I really can't
perform the things that you're asking me to do, and
it's a deshman to the team.

Speaker 1 (04:53):
Well, let me get let me ask you guys this
and uh we'll throw it out to the text line
as well, the comment spirit l text line five.

Speaker 2 (04:59):
Six six nine.

Speaker 1 (05:00):
If you're the Broncos, how long of a leash are
you giving rock Morton if that's the guy at left guard?
Or do you want to see the Broncos go out
and make a trade? I mean, Adam Schefter had a
story earlier today about some of the offensive linemen that
may be available come the trade deadline. Everything we've heard
from including our own wet blanket, the insider, Benjamin Albright,
the Broncos are not buyers. They like where their team is.

(05:23):
But you know, injuries can change that from time to time.
Do you think the Broncos need to go add depth
at the trade deadline at offensive line?

Speaker 4 (05:31):
Uh?

Speaker 3 (05:32):
Possibly, But I definitely would would give Dark Martin, right,
Dark Morton, Yep, yeah, Dark more Calvin. I definitely give
him a lease because he's very familiar with the offense.
He's been there for a while, he knows what's going on,
and I would definitely he deserves that. He deserves a shot,
I think, and if you don't have to step someone

(05:55):
to back him up anyway.

Speaker 1 (05:56):
Right, But to your point you said a minute ago,
we kind of blew past it, but I thought it
was a good point you were making about how we
give everyone else the preseason and a couple of weeks
to get acclimated and ready to roll.

Speaker 5 (06:08):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (06:09):
I mean, if you're a guy coming off the bench
your first snaps.

Speaker 3 (06:11):
Of the season, you're gonna be You're gonna be cold.
He's gonna take a while to get to get up
to speed.

Speaker 2 (06:15):
Man.

Speaker 4 (06:15):
Uh, you know the calls. You've heard him in practice
a thousand times. But now man, you got that got
that microscope on you.

Speaker 1 (06:22):
Yeah, because everybody is watching the replacement offensive lineman.

Speaker 2 (06:25):
Yeah, just waiting for that name to be called in
a bad way.

Speaker 3 (06:28):
Yeah, yeah, and you got to be on size and
you know, waiting for the snap count. Man, he normally
does it with this count. Now it's a little bit fast,
a little slower. It's uh, it's a lot of pressure,
a lot of pressure.

Speaker 2 (06:40):
But you know this this game is is like that.

Speaker 3 (06:43):
It's it's unforgiving and you got you gotta be ready
to go when your name is called.

Speaker 4 (06:48):
Well, you think about the game oftentimes, I've heard this
war of attrition and you have to be able to
play through injury, being hurt and injured. So your your question, Grant,
you said, well, shot the Broncos go out.

Speaker 5 (07:00):
And trade for someone.

Speaker 4 (07:01):
No, you don't want to give up draft capital for
guys that you may figures that they're not long term
fits for your team. They're just kind of it's like
patching a tire, if you will, just temporary. Now, the
thing is, if you're going to go out and look
for a guy, now you have to say, well, what
guys are there out there right now that's familiar with

(07:23):
the scheme that you run, so you can bring them
up to speed right away.

Speaker 5 (07:27):
Matter of fact, there is a guy he's actually.

Speaker 4 (07:30):
On the practice squad if I'm not mistaken, with the
New Orleans Saints.

Speaker 5 (07:34):
And Sean Payton.

Speaker 4 (07:35):
Knows Mickey Loomis pretty well and he used to play
for CU. His name is Will Sherman and guess what
he plays guard? How about that? That sounds like a
perfect fit.

Speaker 1 (07:45):
Of course, we know Sean Payton loves bringing in the
former Saints player. He brought in JT. T. Gray, the
All Pro special teamer earlier this week.

Speaker 2 (07:53):
I like that fit that at all.

Speaker 5 (07:56):
And here's the thing now.

Speaker 4 (07:57):
Will has only been with the Saints for a short
period of time, but he spent the majority of his
time here with the Denver Broncos on the practice squad.

Speaker 5 (08:05):
So guess what, Key knows the scheme.

Speaker 4 (08:08):
So if you want to bring him in as a
backup and say, well we need you to be a
rotational guy, guess what.

Speaker 5 (08:13):
You know the freaking's scheme?

Speaker 2 (08:15):
Yeah?

Speaker 5 (08:16):
Play, Yes, that's plug and play.

Speaker 4 (08:18):
So hopefully someone over at dub Valley is listening to
good old Nick Ferguson right now and say, well, you
know what, go give Mickey Luhomis a call and say hey,
I know we let Will go, but we need him back. However, however,
he's on your practice squad.

Speaker 5 (08:35):
And this is why guy, they put guys.

Speaker 1 (08:36):
On practice squad On the text line from the three
to oh seven, I want them to trade for Joel
Botonio immediately, Cleveland Browns.

Speaker 5 (08:47):
Are you giving him up? Texas? Will you give it up?

Speaker 2 (08:50):
I mean, what do you think would be I'd say
a fourth rounder?

Speaker 5 (08:52):
I mean, okay, I'll say fifth.

Speaker 2 (08:55):
I would do it for a fifth round in Cleveland.

Speaker 4 (08:58):
Known as though you know they they need all the
draft capital they can get.

Speaker 2 (09:02):
Does he want to leave Cleveland though?

Speaker 5 (09:03):
At this station? Sorry, what do you want to leave?

Speaker 3 (09:06):
I think that's a good question as how many years
has has he been in league?

Speaker 4 (09:10):
Okay, so here, I'll answer that question for you like
I'm him right, It doesn't make a difference.

Speaker 5 (09:17):
Let's say he's been in Cleveland six seven, eight years.

Speaker 4 (09:20):
That's eight years worth of misery of embracing the suck. Right,
you you have an opportunity, Yes, you have an opportunity
to join the team that's now four and two with
the possibility of winning more games because their defense is
so dominant. You're trying to tell me that you wouldn't
be all in for that if you, if you can

(09:41):
leave Cleveland. I mean there's probably players on it on
the Cleveland Browns roster right now, right who feels as
though they've been held for ransom, right, just just slide
to ransom note to me, let me get the hell
up out of here.

Speaker 1 (09:54):
Well that's because Miles Garrett took all the day of
money exactly.

Speaker 2 (09:57):
No.

Speaker 1 (09:58):
But Joe twenty fourteen, yeah, twelfth year with the with
the Browns, well guess what all with the Browns.

Speaker 5 (10:05):
This would be an opportunity for him Toe I can imagine.

Speaker 4 (10:08):
Yeah, I want some game. I finished my career on
a winning team. Think about that.

Speaker 1 (10:14):
Yeah, I mean I wouldn't hate it at all. But
you know, people, I think that coming from Ohio myself,
and this is Grant Smith filling in for Benjamin Albright.
But Cleveland they hate you when you were bad, but
they love you and revere you for life when you
are good. I mean, you look at Joe Thomas, he
was never on any winning teams.

Speaker 2 (10:35):
That guy is an icon in Cleveland.

Speaker 1 (10:37):
And Joel Patonio, I mean he's been receiving many accolades
over the year. If you can not many guys get
to retire with one team.

Speaker 2 (10:44):
Okay, no, no, that's unheard of you.

Speaker 4 (10:46):
Okay, well, very true, very true. But I don't know
about you guys, But everything I do, I play to win.

Speaker 5 (10:52):
Right.

Speaker 4 (10:53):
And for Joe Thomas look great offensive lineman. I played
against him in my career, but I felt sorry for
him because he was so loyal to the Cleveland Browns.
But the Cleveland Browns were not loyal to winning. So
for me, if I'm a player and I can end
my career on the winning team, I can tell my kids, Hey, man,
I got traded, went to the Broncos. We went to

(11:15):
the playoffs. We want two playoff games. Right, that's a story.

Speaker 5 (11:20):
Right.

Speaker 4 (11:20):
You would love to say you went to the super Bowl.
But I don't want to stay with the team that
I already know what they're destined for.

Speaker 2 (11:25):
Yeah, it doesn't know. The Browns are getting to the
show anytime soon. And I imagine this family. They would
love Colorado. I mean who doesn't, right, I mean, look
at me in Colorado exactly.

Speaker 4 (11:38):
His His wife would be if she's listening to someone,
she's begging. Please please, if there's a guy in heaven,
please make this happen. We want out of Cleveland. We've
been here for twelve miserable years. Come on, man, get
me about of here.

Speaker 3 (11:54):
But I can say though, with the guys that we
have Cath dark Mark, and I'm hoping that he could
come out and hold it down.

Speaker 2 (12:03):
That would be successful. See you use the H word.
You said, I hope, aug.

Speaker 4 (12:09):
It is a hell of a drug. Do you hope? No,
I hope you don't. You don't know it is gonna
happen or it's.

Speaker 2 (12:15):
Not, but you don't happen or not?

Speaker 5 (12:18):
I mean yes, So I'm not hoping.

Speaker 4 (12:21):
I never said, well, I hope I'm gonna tackle Jerome Bettis.

Speaker 5 (12:25):
No either, You're going to top of him.

Speaker 2 (12:33):
Is the way I looked at it.

Speaker 5 (12:35):
I said this, I said.

Speaker 2 (12:39):
Over no.

Speaker 4 (12:40):
See, the whole thing was in my mind with guys
like that and Corey Dillon and Adrian Peterson and and
the Danius Thomason. The idea was that I'm not hoping
either making a tackle.

Speaker 5 (12:51):
Or I don't.

Speaker 4 (12:51):
Obviously, is that I with Jerome bettist you have to
determine how much is gonna hurt. It's gonna hurt. You
just have to determine how much is going on hurt.
Did you hope it hurt. I hope it didn't hurt. No,
I'm just like I knew it was gonna hurt in
some way, So I'm like, I gotta get to him
as quickly as I can.

Speaker 2 (13:09):
I love Steve picking a little argument here.

Speaker 1 (13:12):
A couple more texts on it, Taway Cows next.

Speaker 5 (13:15):
Live Hope Hope.

Speaker 1 (13:17):
From the seven one nine, why not trade for a
long term replacement Powers as in the last year of
his contract? And from the three oh seven Lance Sanderson,
our guest last night.

Speaker 2 (13:26):
I appreciate you listening in, even when you're not a guest. Lance.
The Broncos have an extra fourth rounder.

Speaker 1 (13:31):
I'd send them that in a heartbeat. Speaking about trading
for Botonio, Yeah.

Speaker 3 (13:36):
Potonio was open to coming. Obviously, that would probably be
a good, good move. Yeah, okay, but once again, just
think about that. You say he's in his twelfth year. Yeah,
I mean that's not.

Speaker 2 (13:45):
A long term.

Speaker 4 (13:47):
Well, I mean office with line of the age, they
can play three more years. Well, I mean Land said
give up a fourth rounder, right, yep. I'd rather use
that to go get a guy in a draft. So
I know I have a longer stretch and stretching with
that particular player where I can develop him. Now, if
you bring a player in and he's a twelfth year guy,

(14:07):
that's only a stop gap, that's only a small amount
of time. And let's just say he gets injured. Now
what Yeah, you've now given up a fourth rond drop
choice for a guy in his twelfth year.

Speaker 2 (14:19):
What are you doing when you signed him?

Speaker 4 (14:21):
Now, well, I'm not signing him.

Speaker 2 (14:24):
You wouldn't sign him.

Speaker 4 (14:25):
No, I'm looking for more of a younger guy because
unless I'm going on and get a guy who now
I'm going to say, well, we're gonna even roll into
twenty twenty six with this guy being our starting run.

Speaker 2 (14:37):
At least you know what you get with him.

Speaker 1 (14:39):
And this is the window right with O Nicks on
a rookie contract. I mean, these next two to three
years are the super Bowl window.

Speaker 4 (14:46):
Now, remember the same guy who you're talking about, is
he familiar with this scheme? Because now you got you
have to bring him up to speed. And anytime a
guy comes in and I can tell you when I
left Buffalo in a practice squad and Parcels had me
join the Jets and the active roster I had for
two weeks in a row, wake up at four forty

(15:08):
five in the morning to sit in Todd Bulls office.

Speaker 5 (15:10):
So he could teach me the defense. Yeah, for two weeks.

Speaker 4 (15:14):
So you want to speed up that learning curve because,
like you said, the prize possessions, but the players, no,
there was no hope. You was there in New York
with Bill Parcells. There's no hope you get it and
you don't. And the whole idea get it or get gone.
So that's the idea. So Gold, try to find a

(15:35):
guy who was previously in training camp with the Denver Broncos,
who knows the system that you can plug and play
right away. And one of the guys I know who's
out there and he's in New Orleans is Will Sherman.
I'm not saying that that's the guy you have to
go get, but that's side the type of idea.

Speaker 5 (15:50):
If you think it from a personnel standpoint.

Speaker 2 (15:52):
Well, and who knows, I mean, you know this better
than anybody. Nick.

Speaker 1 (15:55):
Sometimes all player needs is that opportunity on the field.
And Brockbrton could put up all this conversation to bed
if he goes out this weekend against.

Speaker 2 (16:03):
The Giants and plays, well, you.

Speaker 5 (16:04):
Said, Steve, you said hit us with the hope, and
you hit us with if.

Speaker 3 (16:09):
So okay, okay, So are you saying that he's not
going to be deserving of a what are you saying?

Speaker 4 (16:16):
I'm not saying that he's not deserving of it. But
the idea is you want to make sure that you
put someone in that place where you feel real comfortable
about him.

Speaker 2 (16:26):
I was they do that every week.

Speaker 4 (16:28):
Well, once again, remember Ben Powers got injured and he
had to play through it, and then his his replacement,
Matt Parrott, had to play through his injury.

Speaker 5 (16:37):
So once again, that tells me there wasn't a lot
of faith in.

Speaker 4 (16:41):
That second or third guy to come in and fill
in if not able to take that player out. Hey
well okay, Well Parrot didn't really have a great game.
He had a couple of penalties. So now we're asking
what's going on.

Speaker 3 (16:55):
Would you would you want to be taken out after
having a couple.

Speaker 2 (16:57):
Of penalties or do you want to make up for it?

Speaker 1 (17:00):
Yeah?

Speaker 4 (17:00):
Well I would want to make up for it, But
the coaches make that decision, right because you don't want
to hope that you're gonna make up for it. No, no,
you know, if you're hoping that, hey, man, they don't
call my number. I'm hoping that they don't want to
run a bull rush over here. Guess what you've already lost.
So don't hope. It's either I'm doing it or I'm

(17:22):
not so because they didn't make it any shame, no
changes in that situation. That tells me someone wasn't comfortable
with that. Next guy in waiting husband tells me.

Speaker 2 (17:32):
I hope you're not like this with your wife.

Speaker 5 (17:34):
Hope is not a strategy. I'm just we're talking.

Speaker 2 (17:38):
About arguments obviously.

Speaker 4 (17:40):
Well, well, first of all, if you're a marriage, which
all three of us are, you're not winning that period.

Speaker 2 (17:45):
They don't have something and you want to bring up
about marriage.

Speaker 4 (17:48):
Okay, so yes, and I throw this out to you
guys on the text line, like, there's two things that
as a man, your wife can ask you that you
can never ask her, right, Okay. The first thing is
she can ask you, are you are you going to
wear that?

Speaker 2 (18:04):
Right?

Speaker 4 (18:05):
That's something that you would never ask her. And then
here's the other thing that she can ask you that
you can never ask her. So she can ask you
are you going to eat more of that? You can
never ask her those two questions. Never ever, why not
say what you're scared? They know it's scared.

Speaker 2 (18:24):
I hope you're not scared.

Speaker 5 (18:26):
You're scared scared like I tell your hope.

Speaker 2 (18:27):
It's not a strategy.

Speaker 5 (18:28):
The idea is not to go down that path.

Speaker 2 (18:31):
Do you feel like there's more than just those two questions?

Speaker 1 (18:33):
I'd like to know what there is?

Speaker 4 (18:36):
More than it? But but tell me you're married. Would
you ask your wife are you going to wear that?
Are you going to eat more of that?

Speaker 2 (18:43):
I would ask her the second question, I want more
of it?

Speaker 5 (18:47):
I would ask I would like to do I'm not
asking that.

Speaker 2 (18:50):
Like, nah, but you're not wearing that?

Speaker 5 (18:53):
Telling us that now? Steve not asking his wife's.

Speaker 2 (18:56):
Dad, Steve, how long have you been married? Thirty four years?
Don't give me in trouble? Yeah, maybe maybe give me
another twenty year married?

Speaker 5 (19:06):
Nineteen?

Speaker 2 (19:06):
All right, man, you better listen.

Speaker 4 (19:07):
O G I'm not I'm not asking that question. I'm
not asking it. Ask the test line?

Speaker 2 (19:13):
Will you?

Speaker 5 (19:14):
Will you ask your wife your girlfriend either one of
those questions.

Speaker 3 (19:18):
Depends on the tony your voice or oh are you
wearing that?

Speaker 5 (19:24):
And she's gonna be like, I'm sorry, excuse.

Speaker 2 (19:26):
Me, I'll wear the head. Whatever the hell I.

Speaker 5 (19:29):
Was there, you know what it is.

Speaker 2 (19:32):
Okay, well, have fun. I'll see when you tell me.

Speaker 1 (19:38):
We're off and around our Broncos Country and Night Hall
of Famer Steve Atwater and Studio alongside Nick Ferguson and myself,
Grass Smith.

Speaker 2 (19:46):
We'll be right back.

Speaker 1 (19:47):
I'll Broncos Cuntry Night on KOA eight fifty ninety.

Speaker 2 (19:50):
Four to one FM. I'm Great Smith.

Speaker 1 (19:53):
Alongside Steve Atwater, the Hall of Famer, hoping here, enjoying
the show.

Speaker 2 (19:57):
So fun away.

Speaker 5 (19:59):
Let me say this on hope. You know what hope
is like.

Speaker 4 (20:04):
It's like window shopping, right, You're just going by department
stores on Rodeo Drive, just looking in the windows at
everything you want, everything you're hoping for, knowing as though
you know what chances are. It mean. I get that way.
So I don't like to. I don't like window shopping,
and I don't like to Hope. Either either be doing

(20:25):
this or we're not.

Speaker 5 (20:27):
Period.

Speaker 2 (20:29):
Okay, okay, okay, nigg you're right. I don't think you're right.

Speaker 5 (20:36):
Well, I'm hoping that you guys, there we go.

Speaker 1 (20:43):
I'm a believer in manifestation, which is another word for hoping,
and you.

Speaker 2 (20:47):
Got to put it in the work to make.

Speaker 5 (20:49):
Those dreams come true.

Speaker 2 (20:52):
It's hoping.

Speaker 4 (20:53):
No, you could say, you know what, this is going
to happen. Why do you think people have those dream boards?

Speaker 2 (20:59):
Right, so you're a believer in dream boards but not hoping.

Speaker 5 (21:02):
Well, I didn't say, I said. I didn't say me.
I said, I said people. I said, that's why you
think people have those dream boards. They're trying to manifest it.

Speaker 4 (21:11):
You don't have any goals? Then, yeah, I do have goals.
I just don't hope for him.

Speaker 5 (21:17):
Okay, okay, really quickly, really quick.

Speaker 4 (21:21):
So so here I just told Steve doing a break,
Here's why I don't do a lot of hoping because
when I was a kid, right, my father had a
different family, and the worst thing you could do to
a kid is say hey, I'm coming over to get you.
And then when son turned the dust and no father, that.

Speaker 5 (21:40):
Kills hope for me.

Speaker 2 (21:41):
Okay, now you just made me feel like I just thought.

Speaker 5 (21:47):
I just thought, I said, put some context on it.

Speaker 4 (21:49):
So it's just this thing and no one thinking that, Well,
Nick is not you know, thinking that people can hope
for certain things. But look, you guys, hope. But that's
how hope was rule for me. So it was ay,
yes or no, that's a bit join. I bet we
using a training cap. You hope you made the team?

Speaker 5 (22:06):
No you are, No, I didn't. I didn't know. I
wasn't sure.

Speaker 4 (22:12):
So what I did was I tried to put myself
in a position where when the coaches went up and
started evaluating, they're gonna say, well, who was that guy
running around smacking everyone? Boom it because you wanted to
be on the team, right, that's right. I wasn't hoping, right,
I wasn't hoping. I'm like, I'm gonna make this team
come hell of high water. They gonna make it really
tough for him, Steve to cut me because I'm gona

(22:34):
smack people in the face.

Speaker 1 (22:36):
Nick, Yes, well we aren't hoping that the Broncos offense looks.

Speaker 2 (22:39):
A little better after that game and thirteen eleven they win.

Speaker 1 (22:45):
The Brons mcguy for defense that Nick has coined them
saves the day again. Nick Bonto, Jonathan Cooper, that whole
front line. I thought Riley Moss played a great game.

Speaker 2 (22:55):
PS. Two obviously shutting down Garrett Wilson. Everybody bought up. Yeah,
what were your thoughts on the defense, Steve.

Speaker 3 (23:01):
Man, it was it was a complete like I don't
even know how they did that. I mean, now, I
know the Jets have some issues, but man, they they shook.

Speaker 2 (23:12):
Them all the way down.

Speaker 4 (23:16):
I've never heard of anything like that, man, in the
football game football. But you know what that that says
a lot about the work that each individual guy put in.
And you know the Steve, in order for you to
be a great team in any capacity, you have to
have buy in, and it just seemed as though every

(23:37):
single player is buying in defensively to what Van Joseph
is a precating And I have to say watching the game, man,
and you were in London and I wasn't, but I
felt sorry for Justin Fields because I could see them
lying up going like.

Speaker 2 (23:51):
Here it come again, Yeah, we're coming, yes, And.

Speaker 1 (23:53):
It seemed like he'd evade one sack and then immediately
someone else was.

Speaker 2 (23:57):
Right in his face, flaming him to the ground.

Speaker 4 (23:59):
Now, I wonder if those guys had a meeting over
in London where they said, okay, well let's see who
can get the most precious and most.

Speaker 1 (24:09):
Sacks, because it felt like they were exactly felt.

Speaker 3 (24:12):
Like, and I think that motivated Well, you had that
kind of competition going on.

Speaker 2 (24:17):
Man, that's that's fun too.

Speaker 4 (24:18):
Yes, just amongst the players, you know, we gotta we
gotta get there.

Speaker 2 (24:23):
Yes, we'll put a little sup on it and getting there.

Speaker 5 (24:28):
A little steak dinner right between gentlemen.

Speaker 4 (24:30):
Right, if I get the most sacks in the game,
then you owe me a steak dinner.

Speaker 2 (24:34):
Yeah, it's not well done.

Speaker 4 (24:37):
Well, well we we did. We debunked that already. You
could ask my high profit. He was there my state
that I ordered to burn down, which you got to
try to fool.

Speaker 5 (24:49):
It's freaking amazing.

Speaker 4 (24:50):
Was medium, nice, tender and delicious, just browned on the top,
just like I was pank.

Speaker 2 (24:56):
In the middle though, Yes, just how I like it.

Speaker 4 (24:58):
Yes, Okay, everyone's mistaken when I said I like it brown,
that I liked it brown all the way through.

Speaker 5 (25:05):
No, it's not true.

Speaker 2 (25:06):
I'll take around like this sometimes I ain't gonna lie.

Speaker 4 (25:09):
Sometimes I got it almost chrispy.

Speaker 5 (25:13):
Wait wait wait.

Speaker 3 (25:14):
Now, I never thought I would have to, I know,
not all the way through, but just you know, just
on the edge, and yes, you get the issues.

Speaker 5 (25:22):
Said hold this side of but.

Speaker 1 (25:26):
I'd like something I was playing back here, I was hungry.
But yeah, the Broncos defense man, they are something to
uh to watch right eighty five on Pace for eighty
five saxes.

Speaker 4 (25:39):
Yes, okay, So I mean we know that Super Bowl
fifty team is being honored Sunday. Kudos to those guys.
They did have a job, and we know we had
the no fly zone, right the Orange Crush. Now, if
you had to give and I've already called them mc guiver,
but if you had to give that unit a name,

(26:00):
what name would you give them? Based on the level
of production and what they've done for this team as
a whole.

Speaker 2 (26:07):
I don't know.

Speaker 1 (26:08):
I like mc iver even though Ryan Edwards and Ben
like to give you a bunch of crap that I
don't worry.

Speaker 4 (26:12):
I'm not concerned about those guys. They don't understand the whole.
The guy for movement.

Speaker 2 (26:18):
It's a guy for movement, Yes, movement, all right? What
about uh, I don't know. You put me on the
spot with this, Well tell me this that tell me
no nonsense.

Speaker 1 (26:27):
Okay, no, maybe because they aren't really forcing any turnovers,
are just stuffing you.

Speaker 4 (26:31):
Right, So, so the characteristics you think of a great
defense are what what would you think?

Speaker 1 (26:38):
I think getting to the quarterback pressure pressure, Yeah, stuff,
game being styled against the past defense. Very few penalties
ben the bend, but don't break in the red zone.

Speaker 4 (26:52):
Do you have to lead the league in turnovers in
order to be classified that's different.

Speaker 2 (26:58):
No, not in my opinion. I think it's all about point.

Speaker 3 (27:02):
If you could get stops and make the other team punt,
that's a turnover. Turnover on down, that's it.

Speaker 4 (27:09):
Yeah, I agree, that's not a turnover like a interception.

Speaker 5 (27:12):
Oh no, it's.

Speaker 1 (27:12):
Certainly not the momentum builder that fumble recovery or or
an interception is.

Speaker 2 (27:17):
But it's still off back on the field, that's right.

Speaker 4 (27:20):
You're giving the offense multiple possessions. Think about the fact
that when Troy Franklin the ball was punched out and
and at that point, the Jets had never had a turnover, right,
and then it happened at that particular moment. Think about
the position that the defense were in. Now, now the
momentum goes to the Jets. Now you have to shut

(27:41):
the door.

Speaker 1 (27:42):
Yeah yeah, I mean you look at eight of the
eleven points that were surrendered by the Broncos on Sunday
and you would say eight of them are on the offense.
I mean clearly the safety, but the field goal that
led the Jets got after the Troy Franklin fumble, the
other turnover or sorry was it a turnover?

Speaker 2 (27:58):
How didink? It's the other fence? Well remember the long
kickoff return?

Speaker 1 (28:02):
You're right, yes, I mean eight of those points aren't
even on the defense.

Speaker 2 (28:06):
I mean that's incredible. I thought if I was late
getting into the field and they kick off, were they.

Speaker 5 (28:13):
What we from our TV?

Speaker 4 (28:14):
And if that was the case, we didn't see him.

Speaker 2 (28:18):
I want one on one of the special teams plays.
It was a big play. Somebody was laking on the field,
but that's the look you get when you're in London.
Well we're back here in Denver, yes, yes, but.

Speaker 1 (28:30):
I want to talk about the Broncos Special teams coming
up here in just a minute. On the KWA Common
Spirit health text line to Nick's question earlier about things
you wouldn't say to your wife, let me find these
real quick from the seven too, oh, are you trying
to look younger?

Speaker 2 (28:46):
Definitely not a question you would ask your wife.

Speaker 1 (28:49):
From the seven to oh a different seven two oh.
I have asked my wife if she was serious with
those pajama pants on our way out to dinner.

Speaker 2 (28:56):
She wasn't happy, but she changed. He got what he wanted.

Speaker 1 (29:00):
Sometimes you gotta lay down the hammer, right, last one
from the seven one nine. I encourage my GF girlfriend
to eat a little extra because I like him thick.

Speaker 2 (29:09):
Don't tell her that, though I agree with you seven
one night. I like him a little thing too.

Speaker 5 (29:15):
But he followed that up with don't you tell her?

Speaker 2 (29:19):
Right right?

Speaker 5 (29:20):
Yeah, he's older.

Speaker 2 (29:21):
Well, but he didn't. He didn't eat a little bit
more man. Yeah, yeah, he's thinking.

Speaker 4 (29:26):
To say that, but he's not going to say that.
And any smart man who loves his relationship you.

Speaker 5 (29:34):
Know when and when not to say certain things.

Speaker 1 (29:37):
I wish I would learn that lesson before some of
the things come out of my mouth. Though I know, right,
because I'm really good at saying I sending that immediately
being like, oh damn, I should have said that one.

Speaker 2 (29:49):
I was just thinking that I wouldn't really I didn't
say that.

Speaker 5 (29:51):
I was going to keep that thought inside.

Speaker 2 (29:52):
My head, but it just made its way out. Oh
that's funny.

Speaker 1 (29:56):
We were talking about special teams before the traffic update.
Here's that kickoff return we were referencing for the Jets.
Dave Logan on the call.

Speaker 6 (30:03):
Out over the twenty five to thirty wong Wu is
off and running down the right sideline and he's being
chased down by Chris Abrams Drain and puffed from behind.
But he's inside the Broncos twenty five yardline. Can a
Wongu with a long kickoff return and the Jets are
going to be in business. As I mentioned, Chris Abrams
drains with the tackle. The Jets in business inside the

(30:24):
Denver twenty five yard line with this first intent.

Speaker 1 (30:27):
Now, Nick, you made your money on special teams in
the early parts of your career. Went one went wrong
for the Broncos on that kickoff coverage?

Speaker 4 (30:35):
Well, Geandrey Tillman was in great position to have a
run through tackle and still there was going to be
too far that you want as a special team's coach.
But he couldn't run through because if you go back
and watch it, Jale Skinner is right there. He can't
run his feet because Skinner runs underneath him and it's
like Skinner ducked.

Speaker 5 (30:55):
His head or something.

Speaker 4 (30:57):
So now as a runner, you go, you bounced off
with two people you get vertical and Will Lutz man, Hey,
thank all for Will Lutz because even though Will Lutz.

Speaker 5 (31:06):
Didn't make the tackles slowed down. He slowed down.

Speaker 4 (31:09):
And another dude who deserves prop Chris Abrams drain because
he could have given up on that play, chased him down,
had had those two guys give it up on the play.

Speaker 5 (31:19):
That's six on special teams.

Speaker 4 (31:21):
But we've seen the Broncos special teams struggle a little.
And I told Steve during the break that you even
though they just launch, you can see the level of
excitement on being displayed by Chris Banjo, who's used to
be the Broncos assistant special teams coach.

Speaker 1 (31:37):
Steve, you worried about the Broncos special teams at all.
I mean, obviously Will LUTs is having a great year
so far, but that's really the only special team's position
that doesn't really get influenced by a new coordinator coming in.
I was all amped up about the Riz factor Darren
Rizzy coming to the Denver Broncos, but it seems like
we've kind of regressed in that then that portion of
the team.

Speaker 3 (31:56):
You know, I'm not concerned about it. Like you said,
Will Money lutz is Will need less Man. He's made
some big kicks throughout his time here, and the spretch
team really has been solid for most of the year. Uh,
this is really the first Well do we have a
long win last game too?

Speaker 2 (32:14):
Yeah game, yeah, yeah, we had.

Speaker 3 (32:17):
But first year in I think the guys are getting
used to Rizzy style of coaching, but I think they're
responding well to it.

Speaker 2 (32:25):
I think, uh, I think we're gonna be fine.

Speaker 1 (32:27):
And to their credit, it seemed like they were all
over that put fake that the Jets did. I mean,
they still got the conversion because it was a half
a yard, but they were ready for that to be called.

Speaker 2 (32:36):
They knew it was coming.

Speaker 3 (32:37):
Yeah, and we had we had the returner tackled, but
one of our own men knocked uh knocked. Uh, Dondrex
Hillman knocked him off off the tackle, and uh, it
just messed it up because otherwise, you know, a returner
on Dondre Dondrax Hillman, he's got he's gonna make that tackle.

Speaker 2 (32:57):
Uh, you know, every day of the week, So real.

Speaker 1 (32:59):
Quick before you get out of here, Steve, and appreciate
your time as always on Broncos Country tonight.

Speaker 2 (33:04):
What are your thoughts on the Giants.

Speaker 1 (33:05):
I think a lot of people thought this was going
to be an easy win at the beginning of the year.
But they look revived, revitalized with Cam Scattaboo and Jackson
Garrett quarterback.

Speaker 3 (33:15):
Now it's so crazy to look like a transformation of
a football team from earlier in the year. And you
know they Scataboo, he's hell on wheels, man, Because I've had.

Speaker 2 (33:29):
My cousin called me with one of his friends on
the phone.

Speaker 4 (33:32):
I had three or four other people mentioned Scataboo and
he's not going to last long in the league.

Speaker 3 (33:37):
And I'm like, man, who knows how long he's going
to last? It depends on his work ethic and you know,
dying all. There's a whole bunch of factors that go
into it. But this is an exciting football team to watch,
and it's definitely one of those teams that you cannot
take for grants.

Speaker 5 (33:53):
It's like the Jets.

Speaker 3 (33:53):
I feel like the Jets were although they hadn't won
a game, you still can't take them for granted. You
still got to prepare like you prea for the Super Bowl. Yeah,
every single week, you got to prepare like you're preparing
for the Super Bowl and take take this team seriously
because they have some weapons.

Speaker 1 (34:08):
Yeah, and I mean I think young talent can reinvigorate
some of the veterans on the team when you see
that they're giving you a better chance to win. So
I think it's going to be an interesting game on Sunday.
We'll see how it plays out. Steve, appreciate your time
as always. Always, Man, I appreciate you guys. It's been
fun always. We'll do our Week six NFL recap when
we come back on Broncos Country at night on KOA
A fifty AM ninety four to one FM.
