Speaker 1 (00:00):
Parker Gabriel from the Denver Post. Parker, we already chopped
it up earlier today on my podcast Bronxos in Bourbon,
But good to talk to you again. How you doing.

Speaker 2 (00:12):
I'm doing great. How are you guys doing? It's great.
You are officially the fill in. I see, I like it.
I have filling in.

Speaker 1 (00:20):
Yeah, that's right, h Parker. You were there in New
Orleans around the team. How much did this game mean
to Sean Payton?

Speaker 2 (00:29):
Yeah? A lot. I mean he downplayed it, you know,
publicly and all of that, but I mean action speak
louder than words. It wasn't so much in the run
to the game. But on game day, just before the game,
you know, crashing Drew Brees's Hall of Fame party, you know,
in the early afternoon, before going to the stadium, you

(00:50):
could just tell before the game what it meant to him.
And then afterwards, you know, I started acknowledging the emotion
and also you know, getting sort of reflective about his
career in general, and and and frankly where he's at
now in his career in the second in the sort
of second act with the Broncos, And so it meant

(01:11):
a lot. The players knew it meant a lot. Everybody
in the building knew it meant a lot to him,
and and Denver went out and took care of business,
all right.

Speaker 3 (01:21):
Barga, after seven games with seeing bo Nicks, what is
your assessment at this point?

Speaker 2 (01:28):
Yeah, I think think like one of the things that's
interesting is that it hasn't gone exactly the way I
think a lot of people thought it would go. A
lot of people thought, you know, of course, he's he's
a rookie. There's gonna be some ups and downs, maybe
he's gonna struggle. But I think that people thought it
would be from the pocket, getting rid of the ball quick,

(01:50):
avoiding sacks that way, you know, being able to operate
maybe a little bit more in rhythm than they have
so far, and that just you know, material in pockets.
But it hasn't materialized consistently. And what we've seen actually
is that bow Nix has sort of at his best
at as a playmaker right now when he's outside the pocket,

(02:11):
when he's extending plays, when he's on the run, when
he's using his legs, and those aren't like we knew
he was a good athlete, we knew he could run,
but that wasn't the way. I think that that people
thought it was going to go out of the gate
this year, and so it's been it's been different. You know,
they're they're in the bottom five across the board in
a lot of different passing categories. But it hasn't been

(02:34):
all bad either. You see some signs, you see the flashes.
And so if they can keep harnessing his athleticism and
his playmaking ability in the run game and get more,
they're going to need more in the passing game over
the last ten games. You know, then then they're working
with a picture that that probably can work, given how

(02:56):
the rest of the roster is constructed.

Speaker 1 (02:58):
Yeah, Bo Nick Site thrown for just one hundred and
sixty four yards against the Saints, but he had those
seventy five yards on the ground. And you know, I'm curious, Parker.
You know, a few weeks ago we saw Bo and
Sean had that Ferris Bueller moment, and you know, all
this stuff on the sideline and everything with that relationship,

(03:19):
how do you think that it works, Like do you
think that Bo can go to Sean and say, hey,
I want to run the ball more. Let me get
outside of the pocket. Let me do some of these things,
and Sean says yes, or do you think that you know,
it takes more than that to allow Bo to just
kind of run wild like you did last night.

Speaker 2 (03:37):
Yeah, I think I think Sean wants him to do
that kind of stuff. You know, like Sean Peyton during
over the course of the you know, the summer when
they were all getting reps, especially Bo Nix and Jared Sidham,
but Dack Wilson two was you know, an OTAs in
mini camp in the first week or so of camp.
One of the things that Sean Payton talked about was
how with the young quarterback, they asked the guy, Hey,

(04:00):
what do you like? What are you most comfortable with?
And the more honest and answer you get from that
and the more forthright the quarterback is about. Listen, I
know I need to get better at this, but right
now I'm not all that comfortable with this particular thing
or this look or you know, I just am It's
taken me a little while longer to the cipher this

(04:21):
particular type of coverage or whatever. Like, the better the
coaches can help you around that stuff and then eventually
through it. So you want your quarterback to have an
honest conversation with the coaching staff each week about what
he likes, what he doesn't like, what he's most comfortable with.
And then I think, you know, I don't honestly, I

(04:41):
don't think it's Sean's preference. It certainly wasn't last year,
and it wasn't even really in the conversation with Drew
Brees in New Orleans. You don't think it's his preference
to have all of this second reaction stuff in the
outside of the pocket and all that. And so some
of this is about you know, paid in the offensive
stat recognizing and really seeing and understanding you know, what

(05:05):
it is that bo does well compared to what he
struggles with. And then some of it is both communicating hey, listen,
I really like this, and and then what can you
build off of that so that it's not just Okay,
we'll get you outside the pocket and let you try
to figure it out from there.

Speaker 3 (05:23):
Well, this Broncos defense continues to really shine this season
and have been I guess as a period bright spot.
But the one thing I love about this defense Barker
like week to week there's always someone different who's flashing,
and last night it was Cody Barton, talk to me
about what you saw about his game that gives you

(05:44):
optimism that he can help catapult this defense to a
next level.

Speaker 2 (05:49):
Yeah yeah, I mean he said the same exact thing
last night after the game that you know, if they
played that game again with the same plan the next day,
Nick like he was like, well, it would probably be
somebody else that had a big night. That's just started
how it's gone. And Phil and I were actually laughing
about this this morning. It's like Cody Barton dropped an interceptions,
then he had a touchdown taken off the board by

(06:11):
an offside penalty, and then even after both of those
things happening, he still scored a touchdown in the game
later in the game. So it's been it just was
one of those nights for him where everything went right.
Obviously it's been that kind of night for other guys
over the course of the first seven games of the season.
And so one of the things that you see is
just you know, anybody who they put in there for

(06:35):
significant stats. You know, they put justin Ster not in
for a couple of games, and you know he played
he had a stack on the first defensive staff he
played in three years. And you know, they put Levi
Wallace in last night and he's obviously not patser Ten
at corner, but he holds up just fine. You know,
they're rotating guys in. Jordan Jackson made a play on

(06:56):
the defensive line at one point, like they just they've
sort of quietly built this quality depth at all three
levels to the point where they can go out there
and you're thinking, okay, that's you know, there's Jordan Jackson
playing on the defensive line, Aaron Browning's back, it's Cody
Barton and kwaand Alexander inside linebacker, and you know the

(07:18):
Maari Mathis and at dive and all of these guys,
so many different guys getting a term and they just don't.
They haven't really skipped to beat so far. And that's
that speaks to coaching, and it speaks to the quality
of depth they've built, and you know they're really they're
really putting together an impressive and impressive.

Speaker 1 (07:35):
Season with so many guys you know, getting involved in
in the mix there and there's not just one guy
standing out above everybody else. How have you seen that
help this team really come together? And like bond, you know,
like where do you feel like this team is right now?
You know, they've won four out of five. Does it
seem like they've got this chemistry where they're just all

(07:56):
really coming together, playing for each other, playing for you know,
Sean Payton going back to New Orleans. Where do you
feel like the chemistry and the bonding is like with
this team right now?

Speaker 2 (08:07):
Yeah, definitely. And you guys know that I haven't been around.
I mean, you can have a whole locker room like that.
Normally what it is and this is not a bad
thing at all. Normally what it is. It happens with
the units first, right, Like the defense is super tight,
the offense is super tight. And it's not like there's
no cross pollination. There always is. But I think there's
been a couple of things that you've noticed so far
this year, and it's sort of like on each side

(08:28):
of the ball. One is that the defensive guys are
just supremely confident, and that that's born of how well
they played. And then it becomes a spiral of you're confident,
you play well, you're more confident, you play better, you know,
so on and so forth. Now, obviously you can be
knocked out of that rhythm, but they really haven't been
so far. They didn't play great early on after Pack
got hurt on Sunday, but other than that, they've been

(08:51):
pretty good. And then offensively, for as up and down
as it's been and for as much as they've you know,
struggled to be a consistent passing offense and all that,
one thing that you hear a lot of is how
much me Michael Blinchy talked about this last night, how
much they believe in Bo and how much they've sort
of you know, lifted bo Bow up. And so that's

(09:12):
one of those things where I think they like how
he's responded to adversity and two challenges and to the
ups and downs. And of course, yes, you need the
performance piece of that in big situations and in throwing
the football along the way too, But I think you
have a group where, you know, the offense is competent

(09:33):
in in Bo Nix's growth, and the defense they're all
competent in each other, and then that helps obviously those
two groups sort of you know, be good together too
and play complimentary football. And so you know there's been
times where that's that complimentary football hasn't materialized this year
but certainly we've seen it, you know, more frequently than

(09:55):
in recent seasons, and it's part of the reason why
obviously they're they're perhaps a little of a surprising pantry
at this.

Speaker 3 (10:01):
Point, speaking of complimentary football, tell me this, is this
more about Troy Franklin or about Courtland Sutton. What I
mean is, though it seemed as though there was like
a set of effort to get Troy Franklin more involved
with the game plan, but Courtland sudden zero targets. Now,
let me back up, he had a target, it was

(10:23):
stress from the scorecard because there was a penalty, but
he ended the game no targets, no catches, no yards.
Is it more about Courtland or more about Troy Franklin.

Speaker 2 (10:34):
Yeah, I think maybe a little bit of both. I mean,
I think the I think it's an interesting situation to watch,
for sure, Nick. I also think it's it's it's a
little bit of an anomaly that that Courtland ended up
with zero targets. I mean, and and I say that
in part because he's literally that was the first time
in his career that he's played in an NFL game

(10:55):
and had zero targets. So you know, even the game
he got hurt. Obviously, he got one target, even though
that was right away, and so like it's it's an
anomaly that I'd be surprised if there was another game
where he played the whole way and he got zero targets.
But certainly, I think the flip side of that coin
is that they have tried to get Troy Franklin more involved,
and they've tried to get Devon Beley more involved in

(11:18):
the past couple of weeks. And I think it's worth
pointing out that a lot of us, me included, didn't
didn't think Troy Franklin was ready when the season started,
and Frankly, like you know, neither of the staff, he
was inactive of the first game of the season. He
would show little flashes of that talent in training camp,
but he didn't see it like you know, every day

(11:39):
or consistently or multiple times a day. And here we
are seven weeks in and not only is he playing,
but he really does look more comfortable each week. His
roles increased week over week, and it's getting to a
point where I just don't think it would be all
that surprising when we get to the end of the
season if he continues on this track. I think you'll

(11:59):
get to the end of the season and he'll be
you know, if not DEGO two guide and certainly right
in that conversation. So you know that's that's exciting. You
want to see how far he can he can take
that and run with it. And I think that Sean
Payton and and Carry Colbert, the receivers coach, and the
offensive staff know that you're not actually going to find
out how much Troyce Franklin has to give you in

(12:21):
his rookie season if you don't find as many ways
as possible to get in the ball and to to
really test him and see, you know, how far he
can take it. Yeah, I mean you got to.

Speaker 1 (12:33):
You got to give these guys some chances and just
see see what you're working with here, uh Parker, the
Broncos one four or five. Here beat a couple of
teams that they were supposed to be with, the Raiders
and the Saints. I got the Panthers coming up next,
and then uh uh, three really tough tests in a
row here the Ravens, Chiefs, Falcons. I heard you say

(12:55):
that it's sort of a surprising four and three. Where
do you think that this team is right now, Like,
have they turned the corner a little bit?

Speaker 2 (13:04):
Yeah? I think so. I mean, I mean, you know,
it's it's always winning in the NFL is hard, right,
And I mean I think that I don't want to
say they're all the way there because it's definitely still
a work in progress and they're going to face, you know,
defenses that are much healthier and just much better than
New Orleans. They're going to play offenses that aren't starting

(13:25):
rookie quarterbacks. I mean, you know that back to back
road trips against Lamar Jackson and Patrick Mahomes is going
to look a little bit different than playing against Spencer Rattler.
It's just the reality of the situation obviously, and so
like it's gonna get harder, and I don't I don't
know that this is a nine or ten win team,
but they put themselves in a position where at least
they get to go see if they can do that,

(13:46):
right and that sort of they put themselves so far
behind the eight ball with the one in five start
last year that even just getting to eight, you know,
it took a lot of energy, and it took the
big winning streak and all of that. So they put
themselves in position find out, and I mean for this group,
given where the expectations were externally, that's all you can

(14:06):
really ask for. And so you know, like, are they
gonna are they gonna stumble here? I mean probably at
some point, but I think it's worth pointing out that
since the one in five start, uh, they're eleven and
seven and like you you know, dating back to to
Week seven last year against the Packers and so you know,

(14:27):
eleven and seven not too bad that that would be
a playoff year. So that's that's what they are over
the last year plus. Obviously they've won for their last
five and at this point they're a team that they're
like a lot of NFL teams. They can they can
win pretty much any week and and they can lose
pretty much any week.

Speaker 1 (14:46):
Yeah, it's an exciting time and I think that we're
only going to learn more and more about where this
team is and and you know, live with the ups
and downs of bow Nicks here during his rookie season.
So h Parker, thank you so much for hopping on
