Speaker 1 (00:00):
I'm gonna get into some week eighteen contract incentives. So
(00:03):
for those of you who are the wagering types out
there and they want to take note of these things
and where to put your props this week, as I've
got fifteen different contract incentives that people have to hit
this week in order to trigger big bonuses in their contracts,
and you can decide what you want to do with those.
Some of these guys, some of these look pretty achievable,
(00:24):
So I would just say if you want to put
together some props or some prop bets for that out
of this, this is information for you to have. While
we're near the break, We're looking up Sean Payton's coaching
record by month, and his worst months are by far
September and December and January. He is absolutely dominant in
October and November like meat to the schedule, dominating, but
(00:48):
he's basically a five hundred coach in the other months
when you add them together. This September he's pretty close
to five hundred, but two games off, and it's December January,
which I did combined December January without the playoffs if
you had the playoffs, and it's going to make it
worse because you know a lot of one and done
to that kind of stuff.
Speaker 2 (01:09):
It's going to be my counter.
Speaker 3 (01:10):
Yeah, I'll keep the playoffs even out of it.
Speaker 1 (01:13):
But I mean December by itself is still it's still
nearly five hundred. And then you add in the January
where he's a losing record in January, non playoffs, and
and you know it's not great. So it's kind of
interesting to note he's, uh, you know, he's traditionally been
a bread and butter middle of the season kind of coach,
taken a while to get going, and then you know,
for whatever reason around Thanksgiving, the team, his team start
(01:36):
to you know, start to the bottom, starts to come
out a little bit.
Speaker 2 (01:39):
It seems I think that's fair, and I think it's
it's a concern. I also think if your worst months
of the season you're five hundred, that sounds like the
best year for the Broncos between twenty sixteen and twenty
twenty two.
Speaker 1 (01:54):
Yeah, I mean five hundred coaching Who doesn't want John.
Speaker 2 (01:56):
Fox I get at the lowest at the lowest stand.
Speaker 1 (02:01):
I just like, did your goat on that one? That's
that's that's that's all. I Yes, five hundred. Coaching at
the worst is obviously, uh, you know, gonna gonna get
you to the playoffs.
Speaker 3 (02:09):
That's something that's uh, that's something that's good. All right.
Speaker 1 (02:11):
So I went through and I got fifteen player incentives
that everybody should know for this week. I went through
the contract thing on the NFLPA website and look for
anything that was any anything that was triggering bonuses, that
kind of stuff. Incentives for week eighteen. So you guys
can jot these down. I've got pen and paper whatever
you wan do. Take some notes, but there are some
(02:32):
things here. If you want to put some prop pets
together for this weekend, I will let you know. I'm
putting together some prop bets based on some of these
as well.
Speaker 3 (02:39):
So without further ado, here we go.
Speaker 1 (02:41):
I think everybody knows that Courtland Sutton needs eighty two
receiving yards to get a five hundred thousand dollars bonus.
He has hit that number in four games a season.
He faces the Chiefs who are arresting key starters. So
the sudden over eighty two yards to get that bonus,
given how often they like to give it, how often
(03:03):
they like to do that, I think that's I think
gets up to keep your eye on.
Speaker 3 (03:08):
So there's one. Mike Evans.
Speaker 1 (03:12):
Got a lot to play for this weekend. Mike needs
five catches and eighty five yards, and if he hits
both of those, he unlocks a three million dollar bonus.
Five catches eighty five yards for three million dollars. And
you best believe he's talking to Baker like, bro, I
got one hundre k with your name on it.
Speaker 2 (03:34):
Scat them all, he William Cohen. They have spread the
love five million.
Speaker 1 (03:38):
Look, I'm justop talking him. I'm even talking about OCI.
Speaker 3 (03:41):
I mean, I mentioning it to my OC.
Speaker 1 (03:43):
But I'm not trying to mention that too high because
I don't want the bean counters up there in the
front office and be like.
Speaker 3 (03:46):
Hey, Mike needs five catches eighty five yards. We got
to shell out three million.
Speaker 1 (03:50):
Maybe we got to shut him down the second half
save ourselves three million. You know, I try to be
too loud about that. You're just to your boys like, hey, look,
I got a kick back for you.
Speaker 3 (03:57):
I'm just saying, Uh.
Speaker 1 (04:00):
Seattle Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith needs one hundred and eighty
six passing yards and he will cash in a two
million dollar bonus he takes on a RAMS twenty second
rank secondary. Geno had three hundred and sixty three yards
against LA and Week nine also earns two million if
Seattle wins and gets to ten wins.
Speaker 2 (04:23):
I'm debating a a Gino fantasy decision this week. I
got Josh Allen, I've got Geno Smith, and.
Speaker 3 (04:28):
I got you. Okay, Josh might get rested.
Speaker 2 (04:30):
What do you think about pricey On?
Speaker 1 (04:33):
I think guy like Gino a little bit better, you know.
Speaker 3 (04:35):
More reliable in those situations.
Speaker 1 (04:37):
Okay, co with that, just just because I'm just saying
that Rams don't have anything to play for. Meanwhile, you
get the Seahawks, who you know, the tenth win and
gets them too many. She know has a chance to
earn four million bucks in bonuses by getting one hundred
and eighty six passing yards and all win. That's a
big incentive. Just saying they're very, very incentivized. So something
to keep your eye on there. Tony Polers, Now this
(04:57):
one's af because Tony's dealing with an ankle injury and
the flu. But if he plays, I'd obviously been playing
the Texans number twenty.
Speaker 3 (05:03):
Two run defense.
Speaker 1 (05:05):
He needs eighty three rushing yards for a two hundred
and fifty thousand dollars bonus, and two touchdowns to cash
in on another two hundred and fifty thousand dollars bonus.
So that's Tony Pollard running backs for the Tights. Eighty
three rushing yards for two to fifty k and two
rushing touchdowns cash in on another two to fifty k.
So to keep your eye on there. Defense, here's a
(05:25):
defensive one. Some of these books have got some pretty
good defensive props. This one is a bit of a stretch,
but Josh Sweat needs two sacks to earn one million
dollar bonus.
Speaker 3 (05:40):
He'll be up against the New.
Speaker 1 (05:41):
York Giants twenty seventh rank offensive line and the course
quarterback Drew Locke. New York allows three point two sacks
per game. That's fourth most in the NFL. Something to
keep your eye on there, Josh Sweat two sacks to
earn a one million dollar bonus. Something to keep your
eye on I would probably for me, I would probably
lay the prop on the one set or the half set,
the over half to get the one, because you think
you'll get one. The questions is you could he get
(06:02):
the second one? You know it's tough to get two sacks.
It's tough to get one second the game are real
tough to get two sacks in a game.
Speaker 3 (06:07):
But you know he's gonna be trying well.
Speaker 2 (06:08):
In that way, you can also be protected by the
push if you know he he splits the sack.
Speaker 1 (06:12):
Of right point five over the point five over on
josh Win. I'm not bettinghim to get the two, but
I'm betting to get you know, and that's usually usually
pretty good odds on sack.
Speaker 3 (06:20):
Some numbers like that.
Speaker 1 (06:23):
Back to the offensive side of the balls, go the Chargers.
Speaker 3 (06:25):
JK.
Speaker 1 (06:25):
Dobbins needs fifty eight rushing yards to cash in a
one hundred and fifty thousand dollars bonus. He's obviously hit
that number in five games this season. Dobbins will be
facing the Raiders, who ranked twenty eighth and tackling. He
totaled one hundred and thirty five rushing yards a week
one against them, so fifty eight yards you would think
would be within reach, and I would imagine they they'll
(06:46):
probably Jim Harbow is real good about letting his guy
trying to get his guys their bonuses, especially running backs,
so I would not be surprised to see Dobbins hit
that number. Then they pull in on let Hoskins, Haskins
and dal run the rest of the way.
Speaker 2 (06:57):
So I mean he popped I think multiple sixty yard
touch in that Week one game against the Raiders. He
just needs one of those carries and he'll get there.
Speaker 1 (07:04):
Yeah, That's that's one to keep your eye on there
as well. Sakuon Barkley, I want to talk about him
this week. Barkley needs one hundred and one yards to
set the rushing record. He will face the Giants, who
allow the second most rushing yards. Saquon posted one hundred
and seventy six yards against New York in Week seven.
The question is is Philly gonna let him play in
a meaningless game. I suspect they'll try to let him
(07:26):
get the record. They'll play him sparingly, try to let
him get the record. But if this thing drags on
and he's only like fifty yards at the half, if
he's closer to like seventy at the half, then I
think you know, you go there, But I don't think
you'll play it much if it doesn't look like that's
something that's uh that's covered in Malik Nabors needs two
catches to break the rookie wide receiver record. He's four
(07:47):
catches behind Brock Powers for the overall rookie rookie reception record.
Neighbors is averaging seven and a half catches per game.
He's up against the Eagles who could be resting players.
That's one of those ones to kind of keep your
eye on there as well. Back to the defensive side,
Dante Fowler needs a half sack to cash you on
on a one point five million dollar bonus. The Commanders
(08:12):
are going to be facing the Cowboys this week. Dallas
allows two point two sacks per game, so something to
keep your eye on there. Again, another sack win if
you like. Dante Fowler needs one half of a sack
to cash at one.
Speaker 3 (08:22):
Point five million dollar bonus.
Speaker 1 (08:24):
Banquinn loves to get his guys they're bonuses too, so
that's that's one of those ones.
Speaker 3 (08:28):
To keep your to keep your eye on. Speaking of.
Speaker 1 (08:32):
Zach Ertz playing for a Ton this weekend, so if
zach Ertz gets two touchdowns, that's two hundred and fifty
thousand dollars nine catches to cash you in on. Two
hundred and fifty thousand dollars and ninety yards to cash
in on another two hundred and fifty thousand dollars. I
would not be surprised to see the receptions. Is the
(08:54):
one to cat is to look at here, nine receptions,
I would not be surprised to see them trying to
target him on some titands screens just to add the
receptions total to help him get to his bonus. So
with zach Ertz, he's got three two hundred fifty thousand
dollars bonuses, two touchdowns which seems unlikely but not impossible.
Speaker 2 (09:11):
Nine catches.
Speaker 3 (09:13):
Again, that's a high number, but.
Speaker 1 (09:14):
You could pepper in with some tight end screens to
pad to total and ninety yards. Those are the zach
Ertz numbers again up against the Cowboys, who allow the
third most receiving production of this season. We're talking about
Mike Evans a little bit earlier. Baker Mayfield needs to
finish top ten in yards per attempt to earn a
five hundred thousand dollars bonus, currently ranked seventh entering Week eighteen,
(09:35):
so he's still on pace for that. Let's go to
face the Saints twenty fifth ranks secondary this week through
for three hundred and twenty five yards against New Orleans
a week six.
Speaker 3 (09:44):
Something to keep your eye on there.
Speaker 2 (09:46):
Evid's and him can make each other some money.
Speaker 1 (09:48):
I'm just saying Marquez Valdez Scantling has a little extra
motivation this week.
Speaker 3 (09:53):
The Saints will obviously play the aforementioned Bucks.
Speaker 1 (09:56):
And he's just one touchdown to cash in on a
two hundred and fifty thousand dollars bonus. He will face
the Bucks, who allow the second most receiving production this season.
But keep your eye on Malice Marquez Velda Scaling just
one touchdown, So Marquez any time might.
Speaker 2 (10:09):
Be might be the play there and Bowls with that
let's heavy style of defense, they allow some big breaks
and that's how MVS is gonna get his touchdowns.
Speaker 3 (10:18):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (10:20):
DeAndre Hopkins new Copkins is gonna be playing the Broncos
this week. He needs one touchdown to earn five hundred
thousand dollars. He faces the Broncos, who allowed three passing
touchdowns obviously last week. Uh, there's a you know, obviously
the Kansas City is going to be sitting some starters.
I don't think they classify new Coppkins as an air
quote starter In fact, I think he might be starting
in this game against them, so that might be you know,
(10:42):
the New Copkins anytime might be one. I mean, if
you loath to bet against the Broncos, fine or not
bet against the Broncos. You don't want to touch those.
Speaker 2 (10:50):
But man ps two in coverage and then Carson Wentz
maybe throw it on the ball.
Speaker 1 (10:55):
But New Copins need one touchdown to Casha half eight
dollar bonus.
Speaker 3 (11:00):
He's gonna be motivated for that.
Speaker 1 (11:02):
On the defensive sides, is Darius Smith needs two sacks
for a two hundred and fifty thousand dollars bonus. He
plays on Monday night in so he had two games
to hit this. At Week eighteen, he'll face his former team,
the Vikings. Minnesota allows three point one sacks per game. Yeah,
did Zidarius have a sack last night?
Speaker 3 (11:23):
But I'm not sure. I wrote this down before I.
Speaker 1 (11:25):
K he's down before the game to do this segment,
So I don't know if if he had a sack,
but he needed two sacks.
Speaker 3 (11:29):
Before the Monday night game.
Speaker 1 (11:34):
But he'll be playing the Vikings in Week eighteen. Vikings
allow three point one per game, so he will have
you know, obvious motivation in that one to uh to
try to get that Zachy is checking out.
Speaker 2 (11:48):
No, he didn't record a stat against the forty nine ers. Okay,
zero tackle, zero everything.
Speaker 1 (11:52):
Cold, Well, he needs two sacks and then still so
two sacks and he triggers the two hundred fifty thousand
dollars bucks. Austin Eckler, former charger now commander needs one
hundred and forty.
Speaker 3 (12:04):
Five rushing guards.
Speaker 1 (12:04):
That seems like a bit of a stretch for him
for one hundred and twenty five thousand dollars bonus.
Speaker 3 (12:10):
This is unlikely.
Speaker 1 (12:11):
He does have a chance to return from ir if
he would face the Cowboys number thirty run defense if
he's activated. So that's the last one there to.
Speaker 3 (12:20):
Keep your to keep your eye on. I do have
one bonus.
Speaker 1 (12:26):
Rock Bowers needs nine catches to break the tight end
reception record. It's currently held by wils zach Ertze hundred
and sixteen catches in twenty eighteen. Bowers has nine plus
catches in six games this season, so he's done it before.
So something to keep your eye on there. So there
(12:48):
is your bonus. Bowers nine catches to break the tight
end reception record. So just something to kind of keep
your eye and all these are really just to help
you out make some prop bets. Right if you're making props,
you look at the lines on.
Speaker 3 (12:57):
What people need, that kind of stuff.
Speaker 1 (12:59):
You want to put some some parlays to gather on
some of these props.
Speaker 3 (13:01):
And have some fun with some of these games.
Speaker 1 (13:03):
Like I said, some of these, some of these feel
like they're achievable, some of them don't. I tried to
just stick to the ones that were within reason.
Speaker 3 (13:10):
I go, like, for instance, an areas.
Speaker 1 (13:12):
Or Ecklers feel like a bit of a stretch. But
and some of those urtzes are not that I want
to list them all just because because Ertz is a
guy who I mean, he's been around the.
Speaker 3 (13:22):
League a long time, has a lot of respect.
Speaker 1 (13:23):
Came over just for Cliff, and you you know, he
and Cliff have a very very good relationship. And so
I would not be surprised to see Kingsbury try to
pad the totals and help Zach Ertz gets some of
these get some of these numbers. Now, do I think
that two touchdowns is a bit much?
Speaker 3 (13:39):
Probably?
Speaker 1 (13:41):
You know, if you would have bet the over one,
you know, the over plus one or whatever.
Speaker 3 (13:45):
Just to just to see if he does it.
Speaker 1 (13:46):
But you know, nine catches seems within the real of
possible ninety yards. I mean, honestly, he's within the remal possibility,
but within the realm of probability. You just pepper in
with some you know, some garbage time, any garbage time
tight end screens for him, and you wind up getting
to nine catches, and you know, and that that helps
him get his bonus and players, players.
Speaker 3 (14:04):
Love that kind of stuff, So stop me, keep brout.
Hopefully those helps a little bit.
Speaker 1 (14:08):
We come back, we're gonna talk a little bit about
this upcoming Kansas City game, what the Broncos need to
do to hadle business.
Speaker 3 (14:13):
You are listening to the Broncos country tonight right here
on k Away with Here. Mario the Tansey Seton joined
us in the next segment. We be a little bit
of fun and you've got a wild and.
Speaker 1 (14:26):
Crazy antics he's up to on New Year's Eve, Mario
father for the second time. Congratulations to the Tanzi family
for had another one really recently. I always love talking
to Mario. Mario was my first ever radio co host.
First ever I was actually his co host. That was
(14:47):
the thing he was looking for, Uh, this is and
this is no life. This is how my radio career started. Uh,
Mario was on Twitter. I'd seen him in real life
once before in pass at a pizza joint.
Speaker 2 (15:04):
And.
Speaker 3 (15:08):
He was on Twitter.
Speaker 1 (15:09):
Former bronco Andre Davis used to be his co host
of a podcast they did back in the day. And
he's like, Andre's got other obligations.
Speaker 3 (15:16):
You can't do this anymore.
Speaker 1 (15:18):
I'm doing a radio show over at the now defunct
My High Sports and he's like, I need a co
host who wants to do it? And I was like, huh, oh,
radio might be fun.
Speaker 3 (15:33):
That's literally how that started.
Speaker 1 (15:34):
So I tweeted him and I was like, hey, i'
feeling for a co host. Man, I got a big
Twitter following. That was my resume in an interview and yeah,
we bumped heads about fifteen minutes before the show was
supposed to start.
Speaker 3 (15:51):
And that was that. Like, we just started doing the
show after that.
Speaker 2 (15:55):
So we have him to blame ultimately.
Speaker 3 (15:57):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (15:58):
Yeah, and our first born op was a guy in
town that worked for another station now, Josh Dover.
Speaker 3 (16:06):
Josh Over was doing.
Speaker 1 (16:07):
What you are doing right now for myself and Mario
back in the day. That was the that was the
original show, so you can blame basically them.
Speaker 2 (16:13):
It's funny to picture that now, I mean.
Speaker 3 (16:16):
I mean it kind of is though, is it.
Speaker 2 (16:19):
I mean, it's it's it's.
Speaker 1 (16:20):
Comical the way that a lot of it comes up
and shout out to to my OE Sports. They recently
stopped doing the terrestrial radio side of things, but so
many great alumni from there yourself obviously. Yeah, there's a
lot of a lot of talent, and then really got
their start over there in My Eye Sports and then
we're still going with the with the digital stuff obviously,
but you know, yeah, that was It's funny, that's that's how.
Speaker 3 (16:44):
My entire radio career really started.
Speaker 1 (16:46):
I got those reps in and then I came over
here when I can't, for the life of me remember
exactly how I mean, Right and I knew each other
in passing obviously, but I can't remember for the life
of me how we met met. But yeah, anyway, Ryan
was over Orange Blue seven sixty had me on the.
Speaker 3 (17:05):
Show because.
Speaker 1 (17:07):
I could say things that they wanted to say but
couldn't say. Maybe it's probably the best way to put that,
you know, not being officially affiliated, so I could I
could say some certain certain things during some certain eras
of and be critical in ways that they couldn't and yeah,
and so that led to then program director of seven sixty,
Tim Spence reaching out and be like, hey man, we
(17:29):
gotta we gotta get you on more and ultimately have
me in his fill in and then give me a
tryout with the morning show and uh yeah. And then
when Orange Blue seven sixty became Freedom, then they were
emerging sports over here. The Tim Hager who runs the
iHeart Cluster around the Ihart Cluster here at the time,
and and Tim Spence and Greg Foster had a bunch
(17:51):
of assim to try out And who knew that twenty
minutes on sweatpants would get me a job here? And
I'm dead serious about that. Most memorable radio segments Ryan
and I ever did it was eighteen minutes where he
was a popleptic over the the amount of money that
I had spent on a pair of sweatpants.
Speaker 2 (18:10):
I can put my whole family in sweatpants for that.
Speaker 4 (18:15):
So then I bought him a pair of those sweatpants
for Christmas, the same sweatpants, and he comes in for
our show I think goes on Monday or whatever, he
comes in for the show and he's just like this,
gets this big grudging look on his face or whatever,
and he's wearing sweatpants.
Speaker 1 (18:27):
He comes in for the show, He's wearing sweatpants, and
he just looks at me. He's like, I have been
taking these things up in four days. It's the most
comfortable thing I've ever put on my body. It's like
I have a pair of cloud It's like I have
a cloud on my legs.
Speaker 3 (18:38):
Like see you get a good.
Speaker 2 (18:39):
Pair of joggers, and it is. It is revolutionary.
Speaker 1 (18:43):
There's a big time difference between quality combed cotton and
like the carded cotton, like the rough sweat cheap o sweatpants,
so you know, the gray ones, you know what I'm
talking about. There's a big difference between that and you
can definitely feel. But anyway, that was that was how
this stuffed. Not that anybody needed a trip down memory lane,
but it is the end of the year, and that's
what we do to get into a couple of.
Speaker 3 (19:03):
Tweets this year.
Speaker 1 (19:05):
I really didn't like it. It's kind of funny. Normally
I find like two or three they're so bad it's hilarious.
But as I dialed back Twitter a lot this year.
I really didn't find as many. Maybe it's a volume thing,
but I really didn't find as many that were like, Wow,
that was way off or that was brutally bad. There
(19:28):
was a point in the off season where I did
wonder why and advocate for why teams had not reached
out at least reached out to Ryan Tannehill.
Speaker 3 (19:37):
Ryan Tannehill remains unsigned and nobody's.
Speaker 1 (19:40):
You know and clearly you know the medicals that he
maybe washed at this point, but I wondered, with so
many young quarterbacks out there, why you wouldn't want a
guy like that in your locker room at least. Tannehill's
notably unselfish, great leader, great locker room person, in a
great mind. He was a hell of an athlete. I
don't think people remember that he was. When he first
it was a highly recruited quarterback. But when he got
(20:01):
to Texas A and M, he switched to wide receiver
because they had a starter at quarterback and they went
to get him on the field. And then in Gira
Johnson and Tannehill went on in like two seasons to
become the ninth all time leading receiver in Texas A
and M history before switching back to quarterback and becoming
a potannass there too, ultimately getting drafted.
Speaker 3 (20:20):
There was a there was a rumor, an urban.
Speaker 1 (20:21):
Legend going around during the draft process that Mike Shanahan
really wanted Ryan Tannehill, like really really wanted Ryan Tannehill, and.
Speaker 3 (20:35):
That the Senior Bowl had.
Speaker 1 (20:36):
Advised him to maybe ham up his foot issue so
as nobody else would draft him and would dropped him
to Washington spot in the draft because Washington was drafting I.
Speaker 3 (20:46):
Think at the teens at that point.
Speaker 1 (20:47):
Now they ultimately traded up to two to drafts RG three,
but at the time that that was going on, there
was an urban ledge I was down there mobile and
it was going around mobile that Mike shana was telling
y Ryan Tannill to even like walk with a limp,
say I want you, but if you're not gonna make
it to us. If you don't, you don't do you know?
Speaker 3 (21:05):
So and so?
Speaker 1 (21:06):
And then Dan Snyder got it in his head that
he wanted Robert Griffin the third and trained just a
bevy of picks which ultimately kind of hamstrung that Washington team.
Speaker 3 (21:17):
UH for RG three.
Speaker 1 (21:23):
And as a compromise to that would allow Mike Shanahan
to draft another quarterback that he liked later on, a
guy by the name of Kirk Cousins.
Speaker 3 (21:33):
And so you know, we all saw that that ultimately
went down.
Speaker 1 (21:35):
But that was one of those things that was fascinating
back there at the time.
Speaker 3 (21:38):
In mobile art.
Speaker 1 (21:39):
The legend that was going down to Shanahan was not
to get off track, but yeah, I was advocating for
for that. There were a couple of Drew Locke tweets
in there that I know you'd appreciate, you know, hoping
for a October and a December to Drew Somber to remember,
which after this last game, we might have gotten to
Drew Seber second one to be fair, Yeah, well he.
Speaker 3 (22:02):
He scuffed up by parlay too. It was the only
thing I missed on.
Speaker 1 (22:06):
I had a parlay going it's like fifty bucks to
win forty.
Speaker 3 (22:08):
Eight thousand on the spread.
Speaker 1 (22:12):
It was a lot of alternate lines and stuff like that,
and I had Indie minus six in that one, and
he beat the doors. I mean, Drew Locke came out
and just tore to the point where Gus Bradley in
his press conference a pres coffee. In his zoom session
with reporters today, people were asking about his job security
(22:34):
and he's like, ah, you know.
Speaker 3 (22:35):
Normally, you know what I mean, normally you'd be worried
about that.
Speaker 1 (22:38):
I'm still so embarrassed from this game that i haven't
even thought about. But at least, like and I'll say this,
at least Gus Bradley took accountability, like full accountability to
that game. You'll love to see that, even if he
even if he didn't have a great pert, you love
to see a coach taking accountability like that. There's a
couple of tweets in here. I want to get to
(22:59):
the the Jared Stidham stuff. I had strongly advocated for
Jared Stidham to start the season.
Speaker 3 (23:07):
Over bow Nicks, and.
Speaker 1 (23:11):
The thought process behind that was let the speed of
the game, you know, let bo get up to this,
similar to what New England did with Drake May.
Speaker 3 (23:19):
They knew he wasn't ready at the start of the year.
Speaker 1 (23:21):
They knew that, you know that he'd get there, but
they wanted a couple more weeks of practice just to
the speed of the game get caught up to it.
And he's just just wasn't quite there. Now you see
Drake May he looks looks pretty decent, right, So my
thought process was the same thing that they were doing there. However,
I look like an idiot right now because they threw
bow out there. They did get a couple of wins,
albeit some of it was a little bit lucky, like
(23:41):
the New York game, but it got him to the
point where the speed of the game started slowing down
around game five, game six, and you know, and he
kind of got going there. So six and one half
dozen to the other. In terms of philosophy there, I
was worried about, you know, bo maybe taking the hits
early and maybe making him a little jumpy, that kind
of thing.
Speaker 3 (24:01):
Now I was totally wrong there.
Speaker 2 (24:04):
Yeah, I think he developed. Honestly, it's the thing that
has me most optimistic about bo Nix going forward, as
we've seen him take some lumps, some real serious ones
in those first couple of games. I mean, that looked dreadful.
I was really worried the Broncos would have to be
back in the quarterback market the very next draft. It
looked so rough, But he bounced right back. He's grown
(24:26):
I think considerably over the course of the year and
that has me pretty optimistic that he can continue to
keep growing. Not to beat a dead horse with the
whole Drew Lock stuff, but part of the reason I
wasn't a believer in him was I feel like even now,
the holes in his game are the same holes in
his game that he had as a true freshman getting
his start in Missouri. I don't know if he's shown
(24:47):
that ability to grow in it. A Meanwhile, I don't
know if there's many pro quarterbacks that are more different
than a college version of themselves than bo Nicks is
from Auburn bo Nick. So hopefully he can keep growing
that way.
Speaker 1 (24:59):
Yeah, And to be fair, I mean I expected.
Speaker 3 (25:03):
I mean I told everybody.
Speaker 1 (25:04):
Bet the bo Nicks over on rushing and passing yardage totals.
So I expected certain things out of bow Nicks. I
just did not expect I didn't expect it this fast,
I guess, is probably the best way to put it. Like,
you could see the incremental improvement early on to get
to that point.
Speaker 3 (25:21):
Now he's got some things he's going to have to
correct for next year.
Speaker 1 (25:25):
He's got some things that that they're going to have
to work on with that offense. That honestly have been
knocks throughout the draft process, you know, with him, and
we'll see how teams get, you know, the full year
of tape and an off season to start game planning
for him. We'll see because it's that we always talk
about that punch CounterPunch, right, you know, the quarterback comes out,
(25:45):
lights of league on fire, and then teams get the
off season and the year's worth of tape to kind
of look at their look at the scheme, look at
their foibles. And there's no greater example of that, I
think than c J.
Speaker 3 (25:59):
Stroud.
Speaker 1 (26:00):
You know, last year, everybody was was praising CJ's the
next Pat Mahomes, maybe better than Pat Mahalls, all this
kind of stuff. Nobody's saying that this year. But you see,
like what happens is teams, teams get a look at
your scheme and defensive coordinators, you give them time, they're
going to figure you out.
Speaker 3 (26:16):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (26:16):
That's the reason a lot of the rules are so
heavily tilted to the offense in the NFL, and even
with that, scoring has declined because defenses will eventually figure
you out. They will, and they'll figure they'll solve for
how to stop you, or at least slow you down.
And so that that's the thing you give a defensive
quarter you defensive corners. You give a league an off
season to look at a guy, look at his tape
(26:38):
and go over it for months. They'll figure out some things.
And so that's the thing I'm interested to see next
season how it looks with bon NICKX how and what
he's able to do to counteract what teams throw at him.
Speaker 3 (26:54):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (26:54):
I mean that's if you aren't able to continuously adapt
it as an NFL quarterback, it either put the real
hard ceiling on where you're going to get to or
if it really limits your time as a starter in
this league. I mean, we've seen the people have gotten
upset about the mac Jones comparisons, and I don't think
he plays like mac Jones. But mac Jones went offensive
(27:14):
Rookie of the Year, you know, and then came plummeting
back down to earth. Yeah that can I don't think
that will happen for bo. But if you're not able
to consistently stay ahead of these guys and continue to
develop your game after year one, it's going to happen.
I mean, that's why the Lamar Jackson's and the Josh
Allens and the mahomes Is and the Burrows are at
the top of the league. The defensive coordinators are throwing
(27:38):
anything and everything at them, and they can still find
the answer to the test, even when they have to
play with one or both hands behind their back.
Speaker 1 (27:44):
Yeah, Mac mac jones went went to the Pro Bowl
that rookie season. I mean, he was a sixty seven
eight percent passer, thirty eight hundred yards, twenty two touchdowns,
you know, I mean it was yeah, I mean it
was you know, it's but some of these guys and
some of those guys you just got to have patience
with Baker. That was just a bad situation because you
went from coordinator to coordinator a coordinator and Freddie Kitchens
(28:07):
thing was bizarred, Like why would you ever listen There's
two rules about hiring a coach, and never listen to
your players about you know, about what they want, and
never never hire the interim And the Browns basically bid both.
Speaker 3 (28:20):
I mean, Kitchens wasn't the interim coach, but he was.
Speaker 1 (28:22):
On the staff, and I mean just made it a
brutal mistake. And Kitchens clearly wasn't prepared to be a
head coach way in over his head and it set
the development at Baker Mayfield back. You know something now
we're starting to see, you know, we're starting to see
once Baker got got going again, got rehabbed. It's funny
to look at that Carolina Panthers offense now that had
(28:45):
Sam Darnold, a Baker Mayfield, Look where they.
Speaker 2 (28:47):
Are now, throw into Dj Moore and it was just
an incompetent attack.
Speaker 1 (28:52):
Yeah, just just fascinating to go back and look at
it goes into patients and.
Speaker 2 (29:00):
Fit and McCaffrey was still there too, right, Christian McCaffery
was there. That's crazy that that offense was as bad
as it was with you know, some pretty good pieces
or pieces that have uh wound up developing into pretty
valuable contributors.
Speaker 1 (29:15):
Yeah, that was and a lot of that has to do.
Do you remember who the offensive coordinator for that that
team was.
Speaker 2 (29:21):
Was that Joe Brady?
Speaker 3 (29:22):
No, it was not Joe Brady. It was Ben McAdoo.
Speaker 2 (29:27):
Okay, Yeah, the.
Speaker 1 (29:28):
Guy who benched Eli Manning had been you know, broke
his streak.
Speaker 2 (29:31):
Pieces of the puzzles started to fall together.
Speaker 3 (29:33):
Yeah Macado. Yeah, anyway, that was a fascinating season.
Speaker 1 (29:39):
Which Mayfield and Dartel each started six games, PJ Walker
started five, and Walker might have been the best of them.
Speaker 2 (29:45):
A bit of a deep cut. Everything comes full of
circle here. I'm pretty sure during that season p J
Walker through the bomb. That is the only longer completion
in the next gen stats era in terms of air
yards than the one.
Speaker 3 (29:57):
We can go even solar circle than that. Who is
p J.
Speaker 1 (30:00):
Walker's private quarterback tutor, Tim Jenkins?
Speaker 3 (30:02):
There you go see it all comes back.
Speaker 1 (30:07):
Uh, McCaffrey played, he started six games.
Speaker 2 (30:09):
H hurt that year. They was he only had six
games that year. Okay, then that makes more sense.
Speaker 1 (30:13):
So that was that was the thing, because I mean
he still made the Pro Bowl and was like Offensive
Player of the Year voted for like he was like
the seventh voting whatever. But yeah, he was only it
was only six games. Uh that year Deonta Foreman led
ended up leading the team. Uh in rushing had hit
nine hundred rushing yards that year. Despitally started nine games.
(30:34):
We got to hit a break when we come back,
Mario with Tanzy gonna join us ruckus country tonight
