Speaker 1 (00:03):
This is Charleston's Morning News with Kelly and Plays.
Speaker 2 (00:07):
A government shut down is now a reality. After the
Senate adjourned without approving a funding proposal. Lawmakers voted down
two resolutions yesterday. The Democrats proposal would have funded the
government through October thirty first, while the Gops would have
funded it through November twenty first. Without any sort of
deal reached, the government partially shut down at twelveh one
(00:29):
a m. Eastern time this morning. Officials say about seven
hundred and fifty thousand federal employees could be furloughed each
day that a government shut down continues. The Congressional Budget
Office made that estimate yesterday and said the daily cost
of those employees compensation could be roughly four hundred million dollars.
The White Houses warned that some temporary furloughs could turn
(00:50):
into permanent firings.
Speaker 3 (00:52):
That would be Democrats basically handling Trump and Republicans the
greatest gift, frankly that they could have given it. Now
he's got the look at the way he can cut
departments that were bloated and you know, potentially unnecessary at
least positions within some of those departments, and he doesn't
need their permission. How did they not see that? These democrats,
(01:14):
I mean the party talk about going down like the Titanic.
Speaker 2 (01:17):
I could argue that he could do that already.
Speaker 3 (01:19):
Well, no, he's been pushed back, good lord, since the
beginning of Doge and everything else. I mean, they've been
thwarted in many ways where people are pushing back with
lawsuits and a whole lot of other stuff.
Speaker 2 (01:29):
You don't think that is going to happen, even though
there's they're on furlough, that if he fires these people,
there's not going to be lawsuits.
Speaker 3 (01:36):
And who knows. I mean it's a different tactic. Frankly,
that wasn't on the table before. So and then look
at the we were talking with Worry O'Neil or National
correspondent in the six o'clock are There are over one
hundred thousand people who took what the Trump administration from
the beginning before Doge, you know, was going through with
a scalpel on how our tax dollars were being basically wasted.
(02:00):
There was just fraud and abuse uncovered, and they said,
here's an option over here where you can retire. I
don't have the exact name of the you know the program,
but people have done it over It was like the
mass It's made headlines in the last you know, since
this whole fight started really looming, and then people at
the last second here run into the finish line saying, Oh,
(02:22):
I'll take the retirement plan instead one hundred thousand. That's like,
that's I haven't heard those numbers. I mean, this is
pretty unprecedented.
Speaker 2 (02:31):
Well it's considerable, but I mean, doze, look at Doe.
Oh we're gonna save two trillion dollars. Oh, we're gonna
save a trillion dollars. Oh, okay, we saved one hundred
and eighty billion.
Speaker 3 (02:42):
I I'm I'll take the victory lap there because look
at how much more was exposed of how our tax
dollars were being lit on fire for some of the
most egregious and disturbing things. And I want them to
keep going. I mean, I know they've sort of fallen
out of the headlines when it comes to savings and
(03:03):
the exposure exposing some light on some pretty dark places
that our money was going.
Speaker 2 (03:08):
Well, that's great that it's been exposed, except I think
a lot of people want to see more action, and
they were really excited to say, okay, yeah, let's shave
a trillion dollars. You know, I read back his quote
to him, Grover Norquist, about you know, about getting rid
of the government. His quote was, I don't want to
abolish government. I simply want to reduce it to the
(03:30):
size where I can drag it into the bathroom and
drown it in the bathtub. And so I said, you know, currently,
how close to the bathtub do you think we've gotten?
And he said further away, Well.
Speaker 3 (03:42):
That quote was from how long ago. I mean, if
you miss, by the way, the Live Last Hour, about
this time we were alive with Grover Norquist, who goes
back you know, to the Reagan era when it comes
to you know, no new taxes, and has penned many
books over the years the decades. But yeah, he's he's
the guy who wants to balance budget and you know,
(04:04):
abolish the irs. And yeah, well this isn't gonna I mean,
Trump's back in office, what seven months. I mean, this
is a He's been full steam ahead on a lot
of this stuff. So I would say, give it a
little time here.
Speaker 2 (04:18):
Yeah, but it doesn't it doesn't matter how old the
quote was. That was the quote, and I said, do
you think we've moved further towards the bathtub, and he said, no,
we've moved further away.
Speaker 3 (04:28):
Well that that doesn't surprise me that answer. I mean,
certainly you would agree that's a problem.
Speaker 2 (04:34):
It's a total problem, all of this spending. And I
would argue, okay, so this might be the chance to
save some money. I mean, there's a ton of chances
to save some money. Even does thought that they were
going to save a bunch of money. Look how hard
it is to pry the money out of the hands
of these politicians in Washington DC.
Speaker 3 (04:52):
It's disgusting and to the point where they're willing to
shut our government down over it and hurt their own
constituents by the way this is. This is how drunken
they are with the power and the over reach of
our tax dollars and the abuse of it.
Speaker 2 (05:08):
Frankly, who was it that said the drunken sailors. I
think it was John McCain that said, you know, the
Congress spends money like drunken sailors, And that was an
insult to drunken sailors. The just the amount of money
that goes through that passes through Washington d c and
(05:29):
gets wasted and these people play games. And I will
accuse both sides of this now, I think, you know,
in this particular case, I think the Democrats are being
ridiculous and it's a losing battle for them, I think politically.
But man, I am sick of these people up there,
(05:51):
full time legislators and passing all these laws, trying to
tell you how to live and conduct your life, and
while they have their hands in both your pockets. I mean,
it's sickening to me. And it's time to stand up
to that. And maybe this is the beginning of that.
I don't know, we'll see. A direct to consumer drug
(06:12):
buying website called Trump r X has been unveiled by
President Trump. He made the announcement from the Oval Office yesterday,
saying Americans have been paying the highest drug prices for years.
With Trump RX, Americans will be able to purchase certain
drugs at a discounted price negotiated by the government. The
president also announced a deal with Pvisor to lower drug prices.
(06:34):
Trump has been pushing drug companies to bring down prices
in the United States for quite a while now.
Speaker 3 (06:39):
This is something he did under his first administration that
he didn't get a whole lot of credit for when
whether it was diabetes drugs or insulin. In fact, I
remember it was Biden who was taking a whole lot
of credit for the stuff Trump did in his first administration.
Speaker 2 (06:55):
And I think that's why he named it Trump RX.
Speaker 3 (06:57):
Yes, so good on it for that, because he didn't,
you know, he didn't get credit for it. Biden took
credit for it. And then now he's really just continuing
two point zero to go full steam ahead on this
and great. Now is it confusing to people to you know,
pay out a pocket versus you know, I think that
(07:19):
there's going to be a learning curve here, but to
hear the savings is unreal. I mean he's actually talking about,
you know, forty to one hundred percent savings if you
go to this website.
Speaker 2 (07:30):
I don't know how it all works, if you know
you can use it in conjunction with your insurance or not.
Speaker 3 (07:35):
Well, this is what I mean about, you know there's
going to be an education process here.
Speaker 2 (07:38):
Well, it's already all confusing anyway, How could it be
any more confusing? And anybody who has to like buy
drugs and navigate their insurance and go to multiple different
doctors already knows how screwed up it all is.
Speaker 3 (07:51):
Well, And I guess my my thing is is if
you pay out of pocket, whether it's forty percent or
none at all, we're talking about one hundred percent savings.
I don't know. I don't know what this looks like.
I'm you know, for anybody who is out there, you know,
looking for reprieve. This is one of the most expensive
when you're talking about income, especially for our elderly on
fixed income. So huge victory.
Speaker 2 (08:15):
Trump RX ringing up the savings.
Speaker 3 (08:18):
I wish I had a chatchain there.
Speaker 2 (08:20):
An Iowa Republican senator does not understand why Democrats in
her state are fighting for Des Moines Public Schools. Superintendent
Ian Roberts, the superintendent of the state's largest school district,
is set to resign after Ice took him into custody
for being an illegal immigrant with no work authorization, having
a prior criminal record, and an order of removal from
(08:42):
an immigration judge. Senator Jony Ernst says she can't believe
people on the left are protesting for his release and
to be reinstated. Ernst points out that Ice says he
was arrested after a brief car chase, and that they
found a loaded gun, three thousand dollars cash inside the
district vehicle he was driving when he was arrested.
Speaker 3 (09:03):
You can't make this up. The insanity here, No, And the.
Speaker 2 (09:08):
Guy's work visa expired, I think it was in twenty twenty,
and then in a couple of years ago this judge
issued you know, this order of removal. That's why they
were going after him. He's originally from Guyana. He has
prior weapons charges, by the way, and he also supposedly
lied about having a doctorate degree to.
Speaker 3 (09:29):
Your Lord have mercy.
Speaker 2 (09:31):
And this guy's the superintendent of the largest school district
in Iowa.
Speaker 3 (09:34):
Yeah, and making a fat six figure salary. Now, first
of all, imagine how many qualified Americans there are that
are qualified for this and could use this fat six
figure salary. And when I say qualified, not lying about
a doctorate degree, not having a criminals you know history.
Speaker 2 (09:51):
They're paying this guy two hundred and eighty thousand dollars
a year by the way.
Speaker 3 (09:55):
Yeah, who's got weapons charges and you know is here
ill eagerly. This is unreal. Like I said, you can't
make it up. I mean the guy also by the way,
got a mail in ballot and voted in this state.
They're throwing people are leaning and horror in this and
saying they need to audit the whole system in Illinois
(10:15):
at times to expose you know what they're calling rigs system. Yeah, right,
with corruption.
Speaker 2 (10:21):
Yeah, it's Iowa. And he's a registered Democrat, as you said, so,
I mean he's spent voting and not only has he
perpetrated this fraud and they fall for it. Did you
see the woman up there defending him that's running for
the Senate.
Speaker 3 (10:39):
Can't hardly string sentences together all over the place.
Speaker 2 (10:42):
Well, she was going out of her way. What did
she call it? Radical sympathy? Radical empathy, that's what it was.
The situation calls for radical empathy. These people are so insane.
And it's white liberal women again. There you go. If
(11:03):
you want to see some kook nut job who's on
the total wrong side of the issues, asks some white
liberal woman what she thinks and sorry, these women are
crazy and they're doing destructive things to this country. And
so not only did this guy get away with perpetrating
(11:24):
this fraud, these people are standing up in defense of
him and asking for him to be reinstated.
Speaker 3 (11:31):
It's indefensible, all of it.
Speaker 2 (11:33):
The second of three ICE detainees shot in an attack
on the Dallas Field office of ICE has died. The
civil rights group the League of United Latin American Citizens
announced that mcguel Garcia Hernandez was taken off of life support.
A statement from the group quoted his wife calling the
death a senseless tragedy that has shattered their family. She's
(11:54):
pregnant with her fifth child. One other detainee, who is
shot by the sneiper, continues to recover in the hospital.
The shooter was apparently aiming for ICE agents, saying in
a note that he wanted to terrorize law enforcement and
interfere with their work.
Speaker 3 (12:09):
We're still left talking about this. This doesn't fit their narrative.
They're not talking about the ICE agents that were under fire,
that ran to protect these poor detainees. Just doesn't fit there.
You know, Oh, they're modern day Nazi army wing of
this Orange Man bad dictator, and these are people who
are being doxed and attacked on a daily basis. And
(12:31):
look at this lunatic.
Speaker 2 (12:34):
Well, he ended up killing the people that he was
supposedly trying to protect by terrorizing law enforcement and ICE
and interfering with their work.
Speaker 3 (12:43):
Way to go, dude, this is you know, the unintended
consequences of this. It's just it's hard to wrap your
head around. I will say I got another push and
maybe it's just through my social squirrel on the algorithms,
but ICE is still hiring fifty thousand dollars bonuses. Here
we are this talking about this government shutdown and people
worried about their jobs. I'm just putting that out there
(13:04):
this morning.
Speaker 2 (13:05):
Well, I mean, it's too bad that he was targeting
these ICE agents and you know, they were in a van.
He thought he was shooting at ICE and terrorizing them,
and he ended up killing two of these detainees. The
third one is injured but recovering and just talk about
you know, out of your mind, and he thinks he's
(13:27):
doing something good. And that's what the level of vitriol
that our politics has risen to now, where they've demonized
opponents so thoroughly that people think they're doing good when
they tried to kill them.
Speaker 3 (13:48):
Well, we're emboldening loonies. I mean, this is a we're
continuing to see this. It's very disturbing and even more
so the ramping up of rhetoric, and that really kind
of includes this government shutdown. I mean the finger pointing,
the you know, dividing people who maybe not even our
partisan by the way, who are going to be furloughed
(14:10):
or may not again get a paycheck actually could be riffed.
We could see reduction in force with the government. What
does that mean. I mean, the the rhetoric is rampant,
It's on high and I don't see it cooling down
at all. So what is that What do you think
that means for emboldening these loonies.
Speaker 2 (14:30):
Well, speaking of loonies, I mean this TDS is just
out of hand. Rosie O'Donnell. I saw a clip of
her on Nicole Wallace's show. I think it was their
podcast actually, and I mean talk about two lunatics. So
Rosie's like, I want everybody to know that Trump is
killing people and it hasn't happened yet, but it's on
(14:52):
the way and everything that he's doing in all of
these cuts and all of this, it's killing people. It's
going to kill people. We just haven't seen the results yet.
Cole Wallace is sitting there with that sad almost cheerful face. Yes, Rosie.
I mean he's like, oh my, it's like being a
fly on the wall in a mental hospital. I mean
it really is.
Speaker 3 (15:11):
Is Rosie still in Ireland?
Speaker 2 (15:13):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (15:14):
Please?
Speaker 2 (15:14):
Oh And she says that the Irish are against Trump,
and every time she goes into a pub, everybody's buying
her a beer and saying, thanks, Rosie, we're on your side.
We hate Trump. No. Please, if you can believe.
Speaker 3 (15:26):
Her, you're ready to say you're believing what she's saying.
Speaker 1 (15:31):
