Welcome to Check with Chip, broughtto you by retire Smart. I'm Chip
Maxwell. The local newspaper published astory headlined Nebraska legislative hearing focuses on parental
involvement in schools. The story hadtwo devices the left uses to hide the
threat of critical race theory c rT. C RT is the body of

(00:24):
teaching that says, among other things, that if you are white, you
are automatically bigoted against blacks. Ifyou have the audacity to say no,
I don't think less of anyone becauseof race, CRT fires back, your
racism is so deeply embedded that youdon't even realize what a racist you are.

(00:45):
In the story, some state senatorsand state school board members expressed concern
over the influence of c RT inK twelve education. The left dismisses this
concern as a fussy a reaction bythe right. The story included boilerplate language
that has become a staple of theleft. The story said critical race theory,

(01:08):
which is nearly a century old andis typically taught at the graduate school
level, examines how systemic inequities havestemmed from race and racism, saying it's
nearly a century old is supposed tomean there's nothing to see here. This
is old news, there's nothing toget excited about, and it's only taught

(01:33):
in elite egghead academic circles, notin fifth grade. Both assertions are false.
The local newspaper needs to do abasic Internet search. Just type into
your search engine critical race theory inelementary schools and you will see dozens of

(01:53):
stories about it. As far asthe age of critical race theory, it's
those or to two centuries old, going back to the cranky German intellectual hothouse
environment of the mid eighteen hundreds thatproduced Karl Marx. Then CRT was harnessed
by race warriors in America in thelatter part of the twentieth century to build

(02:17):
toward the unholy Trinity. We nowhave critical race theory, Black Lives Matter,
and the sixteen nineteen project, asin the year's slaves from Africa first
arrived in America. Drill to thecore of each and you find Marxism,

(02:38):
angry leftists trying to find a wayto bring down America from within. Marxism
can't compete with the American dream,so the left is trying to make racism
the number one feature of America. That way, the left can claim it
may seem like minorities are doing wellin America, but it's all all contaminated

(03:00):
by racism. Conservative State school boardmember Kirk Penner is a favorite target of
the left. In fact, thenewspaper story included a photo of protesters holding
signs that said, parents against Penner. He must be doing something right.
Here's a quotation from the story. While he agreed developing self awareness and self

(03:24):
management were good things for students,Penner said without evidence that schools that did
so under the most common frameworks wereteaching it through the lens of a critical
race theorist without evidence. This hasbecome the one way, all purpose dismissal

(03:46):
for the left. We don't haveto address this argument because there is no
evidence to support it, as inDonald Trump asserted without evidence that the Russia
collusion allegation is hoax. The ultimatewithout evidence example is the debate over fraud
in the twenty twenty general election. The right asserts without evidence that the twenty

(04:13):
twenty election was stolen. Never mindthe hundreds of sworn affidavits by citizens,
including election officials, of ballot relatedirregularities. Never mind in a close fifty
two percent to forty eight percent election, the statistically and laughably impossible spectacle of

(04:34):
hundreds of thousands of votes virtually allfor one candidate, appearing after election day
in just the right places and justthe right amounts. So when you see
without evidence woven into a story, that generally means the left can't refute that

(04:55):
fact or opinion, so it triesto undermine its credibility by suggesting that it's
a product of someone's feverish conspiratorial imagination. Meanwhile, the story included this nugget.
In twenty twenty two, the LaunchNebraska website curated by the state Education
Department had links for teachers professional developmentthat promoted critical race theory. The links

(05:24):
were taken down after it was broughtto the department's attention. So the crazy
right wing without evidence tinfoil had conspiracykoops were right. CRT is being drummed
into teachers so they will work itinto the curriculum. My wife teaches Spanish

(05:46):
at a Catholic high school. Teachersand Catholic schools go through some degree of
faith formation and are encouraged to modelthe faith and work it into the curriculum
where possible. Is the Catholic Catechismpart of the curriculum of my wife's Spanish
class? No, do the principlesof the Catechism's surface in classroom lessons and

(06:08):
discussions. Yes, it's the samewith CRT. Teachers may not be quoting
the German intellectuals who define the doctrine, but CRT principles and values surface in
classroom lessons and discussions. Anybody whoquestions that is hopelessly naive or covering for

(06:30):
the stealth effort to poison our childrenwith CRT. That's check with Chip.
I'm Chip Maxwell. Thank you forlistening.

The Burden

The Burden

The Burden is a documentary series that takes listeners into the hidden places where justice is done (and undone). It dives deep into the lives of heroes and villains. And it focuses a spotlight on those who triumph even when the odds are against them. Season 5 - The Burden: Death & Deceit in Alliance On April Fools Day 1999, 26-year-old Yvonne Layne was found murdered in her Alliance, Ohio home. David Thorne, her ex-boyfriend and father of one of her children, was instantly a suspect. Another young man admitted to the murder, and David breathed a sigh of relief, until the confessed murderer fingered David; “He paid me to do it.” David was sentenced to life without parole. Two decades later, Pulitzer winner and podcast host, Maggie Freleng (Bone Valley Season 3: Graves County, Wrongful Conviction, Suave) launched a “live” investigation into David's conviction alongside Jason Baldwin (himself wrongfully convicted as a member of the West Memphis Three). Maggie had come to believe that the entire investigation of David was botched by the tiny local police department, or worse, covered up the real killer. Was Maggie correct? Was David’s claim of innocence credible? In Death and Deceit in Alliance, Maggie recounts the case that launched her career, and ultimately, “broke” her.” The results will shock the listener and reduce Maggie to tears and self-doubt. This is not your typical wrongful conviction story. In fact, it turns the genre on its head. It asks the question: What if our champions are foolish? Season 4 - The Burden: Get the Money and Run “Trying to murder my father, this was the thing that put me on the path.” That’s Joe Loya and that path was bank robbery. Bank, bank, bank, bank, bank. In season 4 of The Burden: Get the Money and Run, we hear from Joe who was once the most prolific bank robber in Southern California, and beyond. He used disguises, body doubles, proxies. He leaped over counters, grabbed the money and ran. Even as the FBI was closing in. It was a showdown between a daring bank robber, and a patient FBI agent. Joe was no ordinary bank robber. He was bright, articulate, charismatic, and driven by a dark rage that he summoned up at will. In seven episodes, Joe tells all: the what, the how… and the why. Including why he tried to murder his father. Season 3 - The Burden: Avenger Miriam Lewin is one of Argentina’s leading journalists today. At 19 years old, she was kidnapped off the streets of Buenos Aires for her political activism and thrown into a concentration camp. Thousands of her fellow inmates were executed, tossed alive from a cargo plane into the ocean. Miriam, along with a handful of others, will survive the camp. Then as a journalist, she will wage a decades long campaign to bring her tormentors to justice. Avenger is about one woman’s triumphant battle against unbelievable odds to survive torture, claim justice for the crimes done against her and others like her, and change the future of her country. Season 2 - The Burden: Empire on Blood Empire on Blood is set in the Bronx, NY, in the early 90s, when two young drug dealers ruled an intersection known as “The Corner on Blood.” The boss, Calvin Buari, lived large. He and a protege swore they would build an empire on blood. Then the relationship frayed and the protege accused Calvin of a double homicide which he claimed he didn’t do. But did he? Award-winning journalist Steve Fishman spent seven years to answer that question. This is the story of one man’s last chance to overturn his life sentence. He may prevail, but someone’s gotta pay. The Burden: Empire on Blood is the director’s cut of the true crime classic which reached #1 on the charts when it was first released half a dozen years ago. Season 1 - The Burden In the 1990s, Detective Louis N. Scarcella was legendary. In a city overrun by violent crime, he cracked the toughest cases and put away the worst criminals. “The Hulk” was his nickname. Then the story changed. Scarcella ran into a group of convicted murderers who all say they are innocent. They turned themselves into jailhouse-lawyers and in prison founded a lway firm. When they realized Scarcella helped put many of them away, they set their sights on taking him down. And with the help of a NY Times reporter they have a chance. For years, Scarcella insisted he did nothing wrong. But that’s all he’d say. Until we tracked Scarcella to a sauna in a Russian bathhouse, where he started to talk..and talk and talk. “The guilty have gone free,” he whispered. And then agreed to take us into the belly of the beast. Welcome to The Burden.
